GUERNSEY COASTS 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PRINCESS OF WALES’S ROYAL REGIMENT

www.guernseystamps.com

Welcome September kicks off with two new issues released on the 1st: the 25th Anniversary of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment and our latest Local and UK rate NVI self-stick booklets, Coastal Scenes.

Warrior Infantry Fighting Vehicles (1PWRR), trained in dismounted close combat or fighting on foot (2PWRR) and is at the forefront of the Army Reserves, being prepared with the very latest equipment (3 PWRR).

The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment (PWRR), whose members are also known as The Tigers, was formed through the amalgamation of The Queen’s Regiment and The Royal Hampshire Regiment. Named in honour of Diana, Princess of Wales, it acts as the county regiment for the South-East of England, together with the Channel Islands and the Isle of Wight.

Our latest issue of self-stick stamps, Guernsey Coasts, has a slightly retro feel and provide a nod to the heady hey days of island tourism. The images on each set of five stamps feature a panoramic scene from the east and west coast of Guernsey, which have been treated in such a way that they perhaps remind us of the fashionable posters of the era.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the formation of PWRR we are delighted to depict The Princess of Wales on a miniature sheet, together with members of the modern day Regiment across our stamps.

On the GY stamps we see the west coast of the island viewed from Fort Grey slipway around to Rocquaine Bay, panning right, all the way back to Fort Grey itself. The UK stamps show a panoramic view of the east coast of Guernsey from the Albert Marina to the careening hard and the beginning of Glategny Esplanade.

The PWRR recruits soldiers from London and the South-East of England, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Wight. As an infantry regiment, it is fully armoured in

Guernsey Coasts (NVI Self adhesive) NEW ISSUE: Sheetlet of ten stamps: £5.15 Issue date: 1st September 2017

The tiny island of Guernsey lies in the bay of St Malo in the English Channel, about thirty miles from the north coast of France and seventy miles from the south coast of England. A walker’s paradise, the island has over forty two miles of cliff and coastal paths to be enjoyed. Abundant in natural beauty, and partly thanks to its mild temperate climate, Guernsey plays host to a range of flora, fauna and wildlife rarely found elsewhere in the British Isles. Residents and visitors alike enjoy uplifting walks by the sea, rambles through the rural inland areas and sedate strolls on the island’s stunning beaches. The contrasting coastline offers flat sandy beaches and dunes, secret coves and rock pools, rugged harbours and cliff walks on the beautiful south coast. There is also a 426-hectare RAMSAR site to protect wetland habitats on Guernsey’s west coast encompassing nature reserves, an intertidal area and outlying reefs and rocks. Guernsey offers a variety of excellent walks, with wonderful varied scenery and views. The south coast cliff paths are particularly popular. Mainly consisting of grassland and heathland, walkers taking to these paths will see a wide array of shrubs and trees such as blackthorn and gorse. Rare plants can also be found on this coast such as sand crocus, bladder campion and a variety of native orchids. The more sheltered paths on the southeast coast are home to ash, elm and sycamore trees and during the springtime, the aptly named, Bluebell Woods is blanketed with beautiful blue blooms. For those who enjoy activities a little less sedate, the island plays host to many festivals and carnivals, especially in the summer months. Two particularly popular events include the Rocquaine Regatta where beach games, raft races and live music all take place at the pretty Rocquaine Bay and the Harbour Carnival at the Victoria Marina, which is a fun packed festival with dinghy races, raft races, tug of war competitions all culminating in a spectacular fireworks display.

25th Anniversary of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment NEW ISSUE: Set of six stamps: £4.06 Issue date: 1st September 2017

We are delighted to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the formation of The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment (PWRR), an occasion which is marked by new Colours being presented on 9 September, 2017. Through its ancestry via the Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey) (2nd Regiment of Foot), the PWRR is the most senior English line infantry regiment. The current regiment was named in honour of Diana, Princess of Wales, who was at the time of its formation Colonel in Chief of the Regiment, a role she held from 1992-1997. Princess Diana was a tireless worker for many charities, as well as a fundraiser for numerous good causes. She was a close friend and keen supporter of the Regiment and was held in great affection by all ranks. The PWRR, also known as The Tigers, was formed following the coming together of the Queen’s Regiment and the Royal Hampshire Regiment, the latter of which was Guernsey’s ‘local’ regiment, although the strong links continue today, since the PWRR recruits its soldiers from London and the South East, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Wight. During the Second World War, many Guernseymen volunteered to fight with the Regiment, including Lt Hubert Nicolle MC, formerly with the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry who successfully landed on Guernsey twice during the occupation to carry out spying missions. Another, Major - later Brigadier - Wallace Le Patourel, joined the 2nd Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment and was awarded the Victoria Cross, having engaged the enemy single-handed with his pistol and hand grenades having lost all of his men. Reports from other soldiers initially seemed to suggest that he had been killed in action, and he was awarded the VC posthumously. He was later discovered to have survived, been taken prisoner and was in hospital in Italy. He was repatriated in 1943 and awarded his Victoria Cross at a ceremony in Cairo.
