Welcome Happy New Year and welcome to our first Philatelic News of 2019. We hope our 2019 stamp calendar will provide all of our customers something of interest and enjoyment. We start with the latest instalment of our Lunar New Year series, The Year of the Pig, superbly illustrated by Chrissy Lau. In Chinese culture the pig is associated with wealth, abundance and prosperity - themes that run throughout this stamp series. We are also very pleased to be issuing a set of stamps featuring the work of architect, John Wilson. He was a Clerk of Works for the Board of Ordnance who became one of the most celebrated architects of Guernsey for the buildings he designed between 1813 and 1831. For our first Alderney issue of 2019 we commemorate 120 years since the sinking of the SS Stella. The luxury
liner hit Les Casquets reef north of Alderney and sank on Maundy Thursday, 30th March 1899. This tragedy became known as the Titanic of the Channel Islands; of the 190 on board, 86 passengers and 19 crew were drowned. At February’s StampEx this year, along with the above issues, we’ll be launching our next Post & Go pictorial issue and are delighted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Guernsey Old Car Club LBG.. The stamps will be available at the IAR Post & Go stand from our GG01 kiosk and from our head office Envoy House kiosk (GG02) in Guernsey. Customer Corner The Stories from The Great War story continues… As a thank you to the families that helped us with the research over these past five years we gifted a souvenir memorial folder. In return we received numerous thank yous and in particular an email from Mr Simon Jones from Australia and a photograph of his beautifully framed set from our fourth issue, which is shown below.
My Grandfather, Adrian Le Patourel Jones, was featured in last year’s set featuring Guernsey Airmen. Adrian had three sisters - Mabel Minnie, Rheta May and Eliza Emily - and four brothers; Marshall Robilliard, Charles Willie, Harry and Barry the actor who lived at Le Catioroc. The five brothers served in WWI and amazingly all survived to return to Guernsey, before heading off to pursue different careers on the island and overseas. Once again thank you for such a fabulous gift which I will always treasure.” We are delighted that this folder has been so well received. Charlotte Barnes, the designer of this series, worked extremely hard and produced a very emotive series cumulating in the souvenir folder.

Year of the Pig 2019

5 February 2019 marks the start of the next Chinese New Year when the animal sign will be the pig, as depicted on our stamps, which are the sixth set in our Chinese New Year series. The intricate stamp designs are the work of talented Sydney-based artist Chrissy Lau, who has worked across the entire Chinese New Year series. We are fortunate to be working with Chrissy, as she understands Chinese culture and can create striking yet symbolically significant designs. For our latest issue, we looked into some facts about Chinese New Year, which is also known as Lunar New Year and Chinese Spring Festival: It is celebrated by a quarter of the world’s population In China, 1.3 billion people have three days’ public holiday. Millions of people in other countries, including Vietnam, South Korea and Taiwan, enjoy at least three days’ holiday too. Billions of red envelopes are exchanged to celebrate Chinese New Year In China, red envelopes always contain money and are most commonly given to children by older family members and friends as Chinese New Year gifts. In China, the colour red is considered the symbol of energy, happiness and good luck. 7. 4% of the world’s population is on the move 200 million people from the Chinese mainland travel long distances for Chinese New Year, making an estimated 3.5 billion journeys among them. During this time, tens of millions of people travel in other countries too. World record-breaking fireworks No single hour in any other country sees the quantity of fireworks that are lit in China around midnight, signaling the start of Chinese New Year. Fireworks are used to scare evil spirits: many Chinese people believe that the flash and bang of firecrackers and fireworks scare away demons and evil ghosts. The Lantern Festival Celebrated on the 15th day of the first Chinese lunar month, the Lantern Festival traditionally marks the end of the Chinese New Year. People will observe the moon, send flying lanterns into the sky and enjoy time together with family and friends in parks and natural areas.

From an Architect’s perspective, John Wilson is an intriguing and enigmatic figure. He came to Guernsey in 1812 or 1813 as a Clerk of Works for the English Board of Ordnance, having being born and raised on a farm in rural Cumbria. As far as is known, he received no formal architectural training, although he clearly had learnt the practical building skills necessary to supervise military works for the English Government. Yet by 1815 he was undertaking private commissions, and had already designed a substantial Palladian mansion for Henry Dobree at Beau Sejour (now demolished). This was the first of his known designs in Guernsey, where he subsequently blossomed and flourished as the Architect of an astonishing range of splendid buildings, until he departed the island in 1831, returning to relative obscurity in England. He was perhaps fortunate to be in Guernsey at the end of the Napoleonic wars, which was a period of great wealth in the island, resulting from the profits from privateering and smuggling, as well as legitimate trade and entrepreneurship. Consequently there was money available for individuals to commission grand houses, and for the establishment to build churches and colleges, markets and States offices. John Wilson could be said to have been in the right place at the right time, but he used the opportunity to demonstrate his skills in design, and the use of materials, to create Architecture which reflected the fluid stylistic changes which were occurring contemporaneously in England. He showed considerable Classical knowledge in the design of the Greek Revival St James the Less, and the Meat Market; Palladianism in Beau Sejour and Springfield House; Neo-Gothic in Castle Carey and Elizabeth College, and masterful Regency style in Roseneath, Bonamy House and St George. It can fairly be said that John Wilson had a huge impact on the architectural character of the island, and his buildings have left a legacy that justifiably earns him the title of ‘Guernsey’s greatest Architect’.

Mary Anne Rogers: heroine of a Victorian shipwreck Mary Anne Rogers was Senior Stewardess on board the SS Stella on its fateful voyage from Southampton to Guernsey on Maundy Thursday, 30th March 1899. Her role would have been to attend to the needs of the ladies and children on board the luxury steamer that was decked out with no expense spared, with first class cabins that had en-suite toilets, a ladies’ saloon and a smoking room for gentlemen. What emerged in the press some ten days after the tragedy which saw the ship hit Les Casquets reef, north of Alderney and sink, was how she put their needs above her own, right until the very end. It was reported that when the ship struck the reef, Mary calmly and speedily marshalled the female passengers from the saloon up onto the deck to fit them with lifebelts and help them into the lifeboats. She then gave up her own lifebelt to a woman without one and helped her onto the boat. She was urged to get into it too but refused, fearing it would capsize. Mary went down with the sinking ship. Mary’s body was never recovered. The loss of the Stella generated a lot of press coverage and greater public interest than any other shipwreck of the period and many of the survivors praised Mary’s heroism. Annie Bryans, a wealthy woman who had apparently met Mary on previous voyages on the Stella wrote to the editor of the Times in the hope of generating support for a memorial to honour her selfless actions. Her heroism and devotion to duty caught readers’ imagination and The Stella Memorial Fountain, paid for by public subscription, was unveiled in Southampton. Frances’ paid tribute to Mary’s selflessness with these words engraved on a bronze plaque on the memorial: In memory of the heroic death of Mary Ann Rogers Stewardess of the “Stella” who on the night of the 30th March, 1899, amid the terror of shipwreck aided all the women under her charge to quit the vessel in safety giving up her own life-belt to one who was unprotected. Urged by the sailors to makes sure her escape she refused lest she might endanger the heavily-laden boat. Cheering the departing crew with the friendly cry of “Good-bye, good-bye.” She was seen a few moments later as the “Stella” went down lifting her arms upwards with the prayer “Lord have me” then sank in the waters with the sinking ship. Actions such as these – revealing steadfast performance of duty in the face of death, ready self-sacrifice for the sake of others, reliance on God – constitute the glorious heritage of our English race. They deserve perpetual commemoration, because among the trivial pleasures and sordid strike of the world, they recall to us forever the nobility and loveworthiness of human nature.

We are delighted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Guernsey Old Car Club LBG. Having received invaluable input from Keith Munro, GOCC Club Liaison and Michael Fattorini, GOCC President, throughout the project, our commemorative stamps feature some wonderful cars. We are particularly delighted that our presentation pack features the cars that appear on a photograph taken at the Club’s Inaugural Meeting. 1935 Austin 7 Nippy The Austin Motor Company was formed in 1906 by Herbert Austin. After WWI vehicles were much sought after and Austin set about designing a small, affordable car. The ‘Seven’ came on the market in 1922 and lasted with various body styles until 1938. The Nippy was a sporting version of the car, its lightweight body giving it a relatively sporting performance for its day. It has remained in the same family ownership since 1965. 1923 Mors 14/20 Tourer Emile Mors began manufacturing motorised vehicles in 1895 that combined a number of advanced features with horseless carriage appearance. In 1908 the firm was reconstructed by Andre Citroen, who was not yet a manufacturer in his own right and, by 1925, the company was absorbed into Citroen’s own company. The car featured survived the German occupation of Guernsey under the proverbial haystack. It was retrieved and restored by one of the founding members of the GOCC, Mr A. J. Mothersele. Its current location is unknown. 1929 Bentley Speed Six Bentley Motors’ successes in the Le Mans 24-hour race led to them being known as “Le Mans” cars, although many cars wore more formal coachwork. Financial difficulties brought upon by the Depression meant that Rolls Royce Ltd. took over the assets in 1931. The car featured was the proverbial ‘barn find’, rescued and restored by Geoffrey Sandwith, another GOCC founder member, in 1963. It has achieved many contemporary sporting successes under the auspices of the Bentley Drivers Club. It remains in the same family custody. 1927 Bentley 4 1/2 litre This is the model that epitomises the wording “Le Mans Bentley”. Again, this was an earlier ‘barn find’ by Geoffrey Sandwith in 1959. It has subsequently rallied extensively and competed in France, Belgium, Sweden and South Africa (twice). This car is currently resident in the United States. 1930 Lea-Francis 12/50 “O” Type Messrs Lea and Francis were initially bicycle makers, with an intermittent production of motor vehicles. In 1922 they amalgamated with Vulcan of Southport, a then well-known manufacturer of heavy goods vehicles. The vehicle depicted at the inaugural meeting was in the Island for only a few years but is now thought to be in North East England. While it is believed that only 55 ‘O’ types were built this is one of only two that remain.
