JULY 2016 VOL 10 No 7

Welcome Welcome to the July issue of our Stamp Bulletin We attended the World Stamp Show held in New York and it was great to see lots of new faces amongst some of our regular customers. The Post & Go exhibition kiosk accompanied us and we have World Stamp Show NY2016 Post & Go B-Series overprints available for both our Guernsey Flags and Bailiwick Life issue - further details are available in this bulletin. On the 14th July we celebrate Postcrossing’s 11th Birthday with two new stamps which were designed by Sue Hamon from our Marketing team. In keeping with the fun and ever expanding hobby these stamps depict the colourful fauna and flora that can be found around the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Later in July we have two new issues, the 500th Anniversary of Postal History and Ramsar: Herm. Our Postal History issue depict some of the key developments in the postal service during the past 500 years. We are particularly thrilled to include stamps which specifically reflect Guernsey’s significance in postal history, including a depiction of one of the oldest pillar boxes in the British Isles, which is still in use in Guernsey today. And finally our Ramsar Herm stamps complete our Ramsar series. We issued stamps in 2006, 2007 and 2008 as areas in Guernsey, Alderney and Sark were formally designated as Ramsar Sites under the Convention of Wetlands. In February 2016 Herm, Jethou and the Humps, a collection of rocky islets just off the northeastern corner of Herm, joined their ranks. Once again beautifully illustrated by Wendy Bramall our stamps reflect the wonderful fauna, flora and diversity of the new Ramsar Site.

Guernsey Postcrossing 2016 NEW ISSUE: Set of two stamps: £1.34 Issue date: 14 July 2016

Postcrossing is a project that allows anyone to receive postcards from interesting places all over the world. Founder Paulo Magalhães originally introduced the idea in Portugal; his goal was to connect people across the world through postcards, independent of their location, age, gender, race or beliefs. The motivation behind the project was simply the fact that he liked to receive mail, especially postcards. The project started initially as a hobby for Magalhães and he developed the original idea by creating an online platform to support this offline pastime, launching the Postcrossing website on July 14, 2005. Its unexpected success swiftly demonstrated that the idea was in fact much more popular than he had predicted. On the 11th of April 2008, Postcrossing reached it’s first million of exchanged postcards, surpassing all expectations. To date over 35,687,093 postcards have been received because of this project. The Postcrossing process is actually quite simple, if you send a postcard, you will receive one back from another Postcrosser from somewhere in the world. Plus the element of surprise of exactly where the postcard has come from is an added bonus! The Postcrossing project celebrates its eleventh birthday this July and to mark the occasion Guernsey Post has produced two very special stamps. Guernsey Post has been delighted to support this project since 2014 when the first Guernsey Post Postcrossing stamp was issued. Since then Postcrossing has become a global phenomenon, bringing together many people across the world. Via this postal project new friendships have been made, new languages learned and numerous cultural facts about other countries and people understood.

Ramsar Herm NEW ISSUE: Set of 6 Stamps £3.70 Issue date: 27th July 2016

Our Ramsar stamp sets have featured islands of the Bailiwick including Guernsey, Sark and Alderney. The latest in the series focuses on the tiny island of Herm. There could be no better artist to work with on this project than the talented Wendy Bramall, who in fact grew up in Guernsey. As a child Wendy was encouraged to draw from life and the beautiful surroundings of Guernsey with beaches, rockpools and nature in abundance provided plenty of subject matter. From Guernsey Wendy went to Winchester to undertake a years Foundation in art. She then spent three years at Harrow School of Art, following which she was employed by the Natural History Museum in London. Wendy is now a freelance illustrator and we tasked her with taking up her binoculars once again, this time alongside a camera and sketchbook as she accompanied the Ramsar team to learn more about the sites newly designated in Herm. We spoke to Wendy about her memories of the islands and this unique series of stamp issues: “I enjoyed an idyllic childhood growing up in the parish of St Peters only a five minute walk from l’Eree beach and Fort Saumarez shingle beach.

www.guernseystamps.com

My parents encouraged my love of natural History and drawing and I enjoyed birdwatching with the local experts. I remember the sea watches we did in the spring with our binoculars locked on to migrant birds and watching gannets diving way out to sea whilst we had flasks of hot tea and biscuits to keep us warm. On taking on this project, I enjoyed being part of the Ramsar team and revisiting the islands. Working on Guernsey Postal Stamps is a privilege especially the Natural History issues as I feel I am giving back something to the island and I hope that the stamps reflect the wonderful variety of wildlife and history of the Bailiwick and the work of the people working to conserve it.” Take a mini trip around Herm. Using the impressive technology of AR (augmented reality) you can see the areas of the Ramsar site up close and without getting your feet wet! Simply download the FREE Sepac app from the App Store, (the same one we used for our Europa musical instruments and Marine Life issues). Then, have your set of stamps handy, open the app and hold your device over a stamp, this will activate the augmented reality video see Herm at its best!

The history of the postal service in the UK reflects the enormous societal and political change that has taken us from sixteenth century Tudor England to the United Kingdom today. For this special commemorative issue, our stamps depict some of the key developments in our postal service during the past 500 years. We are particularly thrilled to include stamps which specifically reflect Guernsey’s significance in postal history, including a depiction of one of the oldest pillar boxes in the British Isles, which is still in use in Guernsey today. Although letters from Guernsey have been recorded since the fifteenth century, a post office was not established in the Bailiwick until 1794 and then only as a war measure. A regular postal link between Great Britain and the islands was inaugurated on 13 February, the same year that Mrs Anne Watson was appointed the first postmistress of Guernsey. In 1840, the uniform Penny Post was introduced using the famous Penny Black stamp which was available from Guernsey’s only post office in the Arcade in St Peter Port, the island’s capital. In 1883, Guernsey had a post office constructed at Nelson Place, a handsome building in Smith Street, St. Peter Port, designed to meet Post Office requirements. During the German Occupation of Guernsey, there was a huge shortage of British stamps, resulting in stamps being printed on the island ever since 1941. It wasn’t until 1969, when the States of Guernsey took over the running of postal services from HM Government, that the island began to design and produce its own stamps. In March 1984, Guernsey Post Office opened its first purpose built headquarters at Guelles Road, St Peter Port. 2001 marked the year of commercialisation when the Guernsey Post Office became Guernsey Post Ltd, a constitutional change that enabled it to operate far more flexibly in response to the challenges of working in the modern market place. Having outgrown the original building, the new company then moved a few hundred yards to its current base - Envoy House – in 2002.
