Welcome What a busy year it’s been at Guernsey Stamps, with numerous Guernsey and Alderney stamp issues, new Post & Go stamps and two exhibitions under our belt! We kicked the year off with the Year of the Pig followed by the inspiring architecture of Architect, John Wilson and the tragic story of the Sinking of the SS Stella. We attended Stampex in February and Essen in May: both shows were well attended and it was wonderful to see our regular customers and to meet new ones. October saw us celebrate our 50th anniversary of Postal Independence. We designed and produced two issues, one to highlight the key events for corporate and postal operations, the second told the story of a collector, which celebrated the numerous and diverse stamp themes and designs released over the last 50 years. Another celebration was the stamp exhibition held at St James Concert and Assembly Hall in St Peter Port for the month of October. This wonderful event provided a snapshot of stamp issues throughout the decades displayed around the building for the general public to see.
Customer Corner Congratulations During the summer, due to factors beyond our control, we had the unenviable task of changing over our card payment provider. This meant that we needed to contact all of our customers who make regular card payments for their details. In the first instance I would like to thank all our customers for working with us on this; it has been
Our Christmas issues this year tell the traditional Christmas story of Mary, Joseph and the birth of Jesus. This year we decided to use the unusual art form of paper cutting. The overall design can be seen on the Alderney miniature sheet, and the stamps show close up areas from within the artwork. Designed in a circle the story winds around the artwork culminating in the nativity scene at the centre of the piece. Layers of coloured paper are placed on top of each other to provide the different shapes. A stunning piece of artwork that is approximately 1.5m in diameter. The 100th anniversary of Remembrance Day is our final issue for Alderney and is a beautiful miniature sheet with a poppy shaped stamp. Letters and poems from WW1 soldiers sent back from the trenches make up the background design. We do hope you have enjoyed this year’s stamp programme and we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The festive season is almost upon us and, for this year’s Guernsey and Alderney Christmas stamps depicting the Christmas Story, we enlisted the talents of local artist, Denyse McGahy, who runs Iris & Dora, an independent art studio based in Guernsey. We caught up with Denyse to find out how she went about creating this year’s Christmas stamps through her painstaking paper cutting work: “I’ve been involved in all different kinds of arts and crafts since I was a child. I’m always interested in taking art into new areas, so when I was asked to work on the philatelic bureau’s Christmas stamps, I was really excited: this was my first venture into postage stamps and it would be an opportunity to challenge myself whilst creating unique paper cut images for the stamps.” Denyse tells us that she created a large design that was a metre in diameter using 11 layers of paper cut designs: “Through paper cutting, I was able to create several layers and a real depth to the artwork whilst also adding light and shade to the intricate figures and scenery.

“There are several ‘sand’ layers and lots of shade and, by creating a circular paper cut design, which is depicted on the Alderney Miniature Sheet and on the presentation packs, I was able to depict the three separate journeys made by Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and the three wise men. From this design, the philatelic bureau was able to choose elements to feature on the individual stamps. “It’s been wonderful to work on this project and to see the art of paper cutting used on postage stamps for the Bailiwick,” Denyse adds. About Paper cutting Paper cutting is the art of paper designs. The art has developed uniquely all over the world to adapt to different cultural styles. One traditional distinction most styles share is that the designs are cut from a single sheet of paper rather than multiple adjoining sheets as in art collage. Paper cut art is said to have first appeared during the Han dynasty in 4th century AD after the Chinese official, Cai Lun, invented paper in 105 AD. The oldest surviving paper cut out is a symmetrical circle from the 6th century Six Dynasties period found in Xinjiang in Northwestern China.

The French and Belgian countryside was devastated by the mechanics of the First World War but with their seeds exposed by the fighting, resilient red poppies fought back and thrived in the churnedup landscape, growing in their thousands on the battlefields of Flanders. Many soldiers fighting on the Frontline wrote about the poppies in their letters home to loved ones. After losing his friend in the battle at Ypres, Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae penned the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, a memorial to him and others who had died. John McCrae didn’t survive the war, but his poem inspired American academic Moina Michael who created red silk poppies to sell and she campaigned to get the flower adopted as an official symbol of Remembrance across the United States. The idea was brought to the UK by another campaigner, French woman Anna Guérin who met with Earl Haig, the founder of the Royal British Legion in 1921 and persuaded him to adopt the poppy as the Legion’s emblem.

The Legion ordered nine million flowers for its first ‘Poppy Appeal’. They sold out almost immediately, raising over £106,000 for veterans of the war. The Poppy Factory was set up in 1922 employing wounded soldiers. It continues to produce millions of poppies each year. In November 1928 The Poppy Factory, together with veterans created the first field of Remembrance in the Grounds of Westminster Abbey where Remembrance crosses and poppies are still planted in plots every year in memory of fallen comrades and loved ones. The Poppy commemorates all those who have lost their lives in active service from the beginning of the First World War, a symbol of Remembrance and hope.
