EUROPA BRIDGES ROYAL WEDDING OF PRINCE HARRY & MEGHAN 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE QUEEN’S CORONATION

www.guernseystamps.com

Welcome

Favourite Guernsey or AlderneyStamp issue of 2017

We would like to start by thanking everyone who visited us at Stampex in February, which provided us with a wonderful opportunity to talk with some of our loyal customers as well as make new acquaintances.

In our November 2017 Stamp Bulletin and on our Website we asked you our collectors to vote for your favourite Guernsey or Alderney stamp issue of 2017.

In May we’re delighted to issue three very diverse stamp themes, starting on 2nd May with Europa Bridges. This issue includes some of the more commonly known causeways in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The Europa logo appears on the 62p stamp which depicts the bridge that connects Castle Cornet to the St Peter Port breakwater and the 76p stamp which features the bridge spanning the local reservoir and dam wall.

After receiving all the votes the two favourite stamp issues of 2017 is the Meadow Pipit stamp issue for Guernsey and for Alderney the Coastal Eclipses issue. The two winners drawn from all the votes we received were Malcolm Cord from Fife in Scotland and Michael Giorgetti from Massachusetts in the USA. Congratulation to Malcolm and Michael and we hope you both enjoy your Guernsey calendars throughout the year.

Also to be released on the 2nd May is our Royal Wedding issue – HRH Prince Henry of Wales & Meghan Markle (subject to Royal Approval). Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were officially engaged on 27th November 2017 when the photos depicted in these stamps were taken in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden. Tipped to become the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the couple have demonstrated they are keen to use their position in the public eye to raise awareness for charities and organisations. Just days after announcing they were getting married, their first official engagement together was a visit to the Terrence Higgins Trust, an HIV charity in Nottingham. Finally, on 23rd May, Guernsey Post will mark the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Coronation of Her Majesty The Queen with commemorative stamps. Throughout The Queen’s reign several unprecedented milestones have occurred providing much cause for celebration. Along with some wonderful images from these celebrations, the stamps depict some of the words from the British National Anthem ‘God Save the Queen’ whose origins, in its present form, date back to the eighteenth century.

With 52 members in 49 countries, the trade association PostEurop was established in 1993 to represent the interests of European public postal operators. One of PostEurop’s key initiatives is to promote philately through its EUROPA campaign, which aims to build awareness of the common roots, culture and history of Europe through its EUROPA stamps. Having first been issued in 1956, PostEurop became responsible for issuing EUROPA stamps in 1993, which remain popular and eagerly sought by collectors throughout the world. Each year a theme is set for PostEurop members to interpret and illustrate on a set of EUROPA stamps. In 2016, we issued a set of stamps designed to highlight the difference between a ‘green’ and a polluted environment for the Think Green theme and the following year, we depicted the wonderful Castle Cornet in Guernsey for the theme Castles. For 2018, Guernsey has issued a set of stamps and a souvenir sheet depicting some of Guernsey’s bridges and causeways for this year’s chosen theme of Bridges; the stamps depicting Castle Cornet and its breakwater and the Reservoir bear the EUROPA logo. PostEurop’s Stamps & Philately Working Group has already chosen the theme for 2019 and we will be issuing stamps for the theme of National Birds. Complementing our stamps is a souvenir sheet, which features Hermetier and the causeway connecting it to the main island of Herm, which is home to the Herm oyster beds. GU

Royal Wedding: HRH Prince Henry of Wales & Meghan Markle Subject to Royal Approval

NEW ISSUE: Miniature Sheet: £4.00 Issue date: 2nd May 2018

Everyone loves a Royal Wedding and Guernsey Post is celebrating with this special issue to mark Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s big day. His Royal Highness, the 33 year-old younger son of The Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales, will marry his 36 year-old American fiancée in St George’s Chapel in Windsor on 19th May 2018. The pair were officially engaged on 27th November 2017 when the photos depicted in these stamps were taken in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden. The couple who are tipped to become the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have both demonstrated they are keen to use their position in the public eye to raise awareness for charities and organisations. Just days after announcing they were getting married, their first official engagement together was a visit to the Terrence Higgins Trust, an HIV charity in Nottingham. Prince Harry, who founded the charity Sentebale which helps orphans in South Africa affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, had a public HIV test at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital posted on Facebook in 2016 to show how easy it is to get checked, part of his efforts to break down misconceptions of the disease. Meghan, who starred in the US legal drama Suits, became a Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada, the organisation set up to empower children, their families and their communities to overcome poverty and injustice. As part of her role she travelled to Rwanda to see the impact clean water has on the lives of the people there. She has also been a UN women’s advocate for Political Participation and Leadership and has campaigned for gender equality, publicly supporting actress Emma Watson’s He For She campaign. Once married, Meghan will become the fourth patron of The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, the charitable organisation set up to support causes close to their hearts It is not yet known what other causes Meghan will become patron of but this royal partnership looks set to be the perfect match for these two famous philanthropists.

To mark the 65th anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation in 2018, we are delighted to depict Her Majesty at numerous events, including her 80th birthday and Golden Jubilee celebrations. The stamps depict some of the words from the British National Anthem ‘God Save the Queen’ (also called ‘God Save the King’ during a kingship), whose origins, in its present form, date back to the eighteenth century. The origin of both the words and the music is unknown, although its many candidates for authorship include John Bull (c. 1562–1628), Thomas Ravenscroft (c. 1583–c. 1633), Henry Purcell (c. 1639–95), and Henry Carey (c. 1687–1743). ‘God Save The King’ was first publicly performed in London in 1745, which came to be known as the National Anthem at the beginning of the nineteenth century. In September 1745 Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the ‘Young Pretender’, defeated the army of King George II at Prestonpans, near Edinburgh. Upon news of the defeat reaching London, the leader of the band at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, arranged ‘God Save The King’ to be performed after a play. It was a huge success and was repeated nightly, quickly spreading to other theatres. Soon after, it became customary to greet monarchs with the song as they entered a place of public entertainment. From Great Britain the melody passed to continental Europe, where it was particularly popular in Germany and Scandinavia, with a variety of different lyrics. There is no official version of the National Anthem, as the words are a matter of tradition. Additional verses have been added down the years, but are rarely used. In total, around 140 composers, including Beethoven, Haydn and Brahms, have used the tune in their compositions.
