The Film & Video gallery is a space permanently devoted to video art and the moving image. Over the course of these months, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao will present the work Disorient (2009) by Fiona Tan (b. 1966, Pekanbaru, Indonesia) in this gallery. The two-channel video installation Disorient, designed for the Dutch pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale by the artist, who lives in the Netherlands, reflects the history of Venice as a strategic hub of European trade with the Asian territories between the 13th and 16th centuries, through the words that the legendary Venetian explorer Marco Polo captured in his Book of Wonders. On opposite screens, two film stories unfold parallel to each other, contrasting a trove of exuberant, chaotic Oriental curiosities with a documentary montage on the lifestyles and manufacturing output of the post-colonial, globalized Asia of today.

In the forthcoming months until October 2017, we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary. Throughout these 20 years, many things have changed: we built an extraordinary building, an icon in contemporary architecture; the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has become the symbol of a city which underwent a profound transformation and is now modern and cosmopolitan; and we have organized anthologies of artists who have revolutionized art, designers who innovated in fashion, and civilizations that altered the future. All of this deserves to be celebrated with exhibitions, events, and a wide range of activities and initiatives in different disciplines. Join us in this commemoration.
As part of our 20th Anniversary, we are lending Museum spaces to other cultural agents and entities through the . program. This initiative, which is open to all disciplines (music, film, video, dance, performance, theatre, food, etc.) will allow you to discover the richness and variety of projects which are happening around us. The calendar of activities will be finalized during the forthcoming months.
