The art of Olafur Eliasson originates in each individual’s perception, movement, corporal experience, and emotions. His practice goes beyond creating works and exhibitions and encompasses public interventions, architectural projects, and political issues. This exhibition, which presents around 30 works created between 1990 and 2020, including sculptures, photographs, paintings, and installations, questions how we act in our environment and how we perceive it, leading to a reflection on extremely important, timely issues.

curated by germano celant and manuel cirauqui gallery :
Exhibition co-organized by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and MART – Museo d’arte moderna e contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto

In his seven decades of artistic practice, Richard Artschwager (b. 1923; d. 2013) constructed a unique path for the art of his time. Decidedly focused on rigorously understanding space and the daily objects that occupy and structure it, Artschwager managed to express himself with multiple materials at a halfway point between painting and sculpture, while critically setting himself apart from the Minimalist works that dominated the art scene of the 1960s and 1970s. This anthological exhibition analyzes Artschwager’s creative career through more than 60 works of art that convey the heart of his research, tracing an arc from his beginnings in the 1950s up until the first decade of the current century. A fundamental aspect of the artist’s work is the representation—a hybrid between the two-dimensions and the three-dimensional—of utensils and furniture, as well as the use of recently-invented industrial materials such as Formica, celotext, and aluminum. Providing a unique interpretation of Artschwager’s work through various theme-based groupings, the exhibition will allow visitors to transversely and comparatively observe the most representative series of an output that is equally charged with humor and grandeur.

Lygia Clark Painting as an Experimental Field, 1948–1958 march
6−may 24
curated by geaninne gutiérrez - guimarães galleries :
305, 306, and 307
Lygia Clark (b. 1920; d. 1988) is an important figure in the Brazilian avant-garde whose innovative work spans more than three decades of painting, sculpture, films, drawings, engravings, participatory actions, and art therapy. This exhibition will analyze in depth the most crucial years in Lygia Clark’s development, between 1948 and 1958, a period in which the artist experimented between representation and abstraction to articulate the visual language that would define her future artistic production. Along with the representation of rarely-shown drawings from her earliest work, this exhibition will present a collection of paintings from other important series created during this period with the goal of providing a general, fundamental perspective on the first decade of Lygia Clark’s career. The show will be organized into three historical sections: “The Early Years, 1948−1952,” “Geometric Abstraction, 1953−1956” and “Variation of Form: Modulating Space, 1957−1958,” each of which will address Clark’s most significant ideas and showcase a selection of pieces representative of her artistic development. After its opening at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the exhibition will tour to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, where it will be on view between June 27 and September 28, 2020.

curated by manuel cirauqui gallery : film
& video
William Kentridge is a leading figure in the recent history of video installation, which in his case always operates at a crossroads between choreography and drawing, gesture and erasure. The predominance of black and white links the traditional texture of cinematographic film to the plastic mediums of charcoal, graphite, and ink. In this nine-screen presentation, Kentridge invokes Georges Méliès, founding
genius and a pioneer of modern cinema, simultaneously creating a dreamlike self-portrait using the artist’s studio as a microcosm, staging both his body and his daily work. 7 Fragments for Georges Méliès, the video work that lends the title to the exhibition, is accompanied by two additional pieces also created in 2003, entitled Day for Night (refering to the process of black to white inversion in photo negatives) and Journey to the Moon (an implicit tribute to the homonymous masterpiece created by Méliès in 1902). This last work dramatically fills the entirety of the space with sound through the original music by Philip Miller.
