Jesper Just: This Nameless Spectacle
Jesper Just, This Nameless Spectacle, 2011. Blu-ray screening on two channels, sound, 13 min. Courtesy Galerie Perrotin, Paris
4–october 20, 2019 & video curator : manuel cirauqui july
gallery : film
Artist Jesper Just (b. 1974, Copenhagen) has acquired international prestige over the past two decades thanks to his ambitious use of the means of large Hollywood productions. In his work, filled with ambiguity and suspense, Just explores concepts that are intimately related to the filmmaking tradition, such as gender, identity, and desire, yet places them in an expanded spatial framework that sets images in a quasiarchitectural dimension. The two-channel video installation This Nameless Spectacle (2011) takes its title from a poem by American writer William Carlos Williams, in which he praises the fascinating beauty of the unremarkable situations that fill our everyday life, the “nameless spectacle” of our own gaze directed at the everyday world. Divided into two parallel flows of time and two monumental screens facing
one another, Just’s film presents two people walking through Buttes-Chaumont Park in Paris, an icon of Haussmanian urban planning. These characters relate to one another exclusively through the gaze, just like the public does with images. Within this crossfire, the almost-Hitchcockian dramatism of the work unfolds.

Learning Through Art june
18–september 15, 2019
educational area
This exhibition presents a selection of works that 209 schoolchildren ages 6 to 12 have created throughout school year 2018–19, as part of the educational program Learning Through Art. This initiative places nine artists—Iñaki Gracenea, Zaloa Ipiña, Nerea Lekuona, Maider López, Karlos Martínez Bordoy, Manu Muniategiandikoetxea, Jorge Rubio, Ibon Sáenz de Olazagoitia, and Manu Uranga—in schools, where they work closely with the teachers to reinforce the elementary school curriculum by using art as a tool. Discussing art and participating in the creative process alongside an artist allows the elementary schoolchildren to explore curricular subjects from a different viewpoint. Many students learn better when the learning process is more active and they have more opportunities to make their own choices. Sparking the students’ curiosity, the program invites them to ask questions, explore inspiring new ideas, and experience the thrill of discovery. The public schools participating in school year 2018–19 are: Deusto, Munoa, Ángeles Custodios, and Zorroza from Bizkaia; San José and Sasoeta-Zumaburu from Gipuzkoa; Paula Montal, Sansomendi, and San Ignacio from Araba.
