Diana Thater: A Runaway World

Diana Thater, A Runaway World, 2016–17. Video installation. Dimensions variable. Installation view, The Mistake Room, Los Angeles.

november

29, 2018– march 3, 2019

curator : manuel cirauqui film

& video gallery, 103

In her 30-year-long career, Diana Thater (b. 1962, San Francisco) has been a pioneer of multimedia art, combining new technologies of the moving image with forms that defy the conventions of film and video narrative. By manipulating color in the exhibition space and using screens and monitors as artistic medium, Thater’s works simultaneously engage

in dialogue with key references in video art and address major concerns in contemporary culture. A Runaway World comprises two installations about the life—both quiet and precarious—of two endangered animal species: rhinos and elephants.

Based on a joint initiative of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, Architecture Effects presents an innovative look at the correspondences and connections between art and architecture at the height of the digital era. The exhibition’s origin is the Museum building itself, opened in 1997 as the first and quintessential example of architecture made possible by computer technology—a paradigm of the communications and economic “effects” that would redefine the success of this discipline over the following decades. Analyzing it in connection with other milestones of the digital era, this exhibition draws a comparison with the zenith

COME FOR A PREVIEW OF OUR NEW ZERO GALLERY ON DECEMBER 17 The new ZERO Gallery delivers a unique, immersive experience for the visitor. Through an optical device that multiplies the visual space fourteen-fold, a seamless succession of mesmerizing, kaleidoscopic images combine with an original soundtrack to reveal an unprecedented image of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Collection, and its historic bonds with the region. This innovative, immersive environment is the result of the collaboration between the Museum and New York-based firm Local Projects, which specializes in experience design for museums and cultural spaces. Bringing together creative design, technology, architecture, filmmaking, and music, ZERO is the ideal starting point for a visit to the Museum. The new space, and the extraordinary experience it will offer to visitors from December 17, are an evolution of the previous ZERO Espazioa that redefines its function ten years after it was opened. As part of the Museum’s Strategic Initiatives, ZERO specifically addresses visitor orientation about the Museum’s mission and content. The evolution of society and the relationship between modern museums and their audiences are critical factors in the construction and production of the new ZERO project. Placing a special emphasis on the emotional connection with visitors, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao thus demonstrates its determination and commitment toward innovation and the search of new ways to showcase art. Access to ZERO will be free, not requiring previous reservation, although the space does have limited capacity. The experience is estimated to be approximately 6 minutes.
