Welcome from
Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation TTourists often ask me why Phuket is so popular and why it’s often voted one of the top places in the world for tourists to visit. The answer is easy. Firstly, o we welcome tourists as if they are members of our own family – with a w ssmile and with kindness. We have absolutely stunning golden sand beaches which are washed by the beautiful warm waters of the Andaman Sea and Phang Nga Bay. These beaches, with their wonderful colorful sunsets, are a great place to visit and are especially popular with visitors wanting to escape the cold of European or Russian winters! They are also within easy reach of some of the best hotels, resorts and spas in the world. And of course, many of these hotels and resorts will be represented in person at the ITB at Berlin from March 5-9, 2014. Phuket is a great place to escape for a holiday. You can take a day trip to the stunning limestone karsts which rear vertically from the sea in Phang Nga Bay, or visit the famous James Bond Island. You can take a cycling tour across to Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi and experience life in the quiet lane, or visit the beautiful islands of Phi Phi Don and the lm-famous Phi Phi Lei. Phuket is good value for money! Our accommodation rates are highly competitive, while our professional service is delivered with a traditional Thai smile. Our food is celebrated as some of the very best in the world, and our massage and spa services are steeped in Thai culture. Phuket international airport continues to grow and expand rapidly to efciently welcome and process the millions of visitors we welcome through its gates, and the island’s infrastructure and services continue to be upgraded. All in all, we are a very open and welcoming society. Come and join us.
Mr.Paiboon Upattising
CEO of Phuket Provincial Administration Organization
Welcome from Phuket Tourist Association
I would like to introduce our team traveling to the ITB in Berlin. We will be in Berlin again because we have something highly prized and valuable to promote - our beautiful Phuket and Andaman Region. The members of our team represent many of the best hotels and resorts in the region. All are members of the Phuket Tourist Association. All are highly professional and very proud of the “story” they have to tell, what they have to offer, and who they represent. I would also like to thank the PPAO and acknowledge the crucial role they have played in our presence at the ITB. This is an excellent “investment” by our political leadership in the major industry on the island, which is tourism. And lastly, I would like to introduce our team traveling to Berlin. The hotels and resorts they represent are featured on the following pages of The Guide Phuket. This magazine, which is also available to tourists in Phuket, contains features which will give readers an idea of some of the huge range of activities available in our region. Come and see and enjoy for yourselves. Kind regards,
Mr.Phonganan Suwannakarn President Phuket Tourist Association

t e k u Ph of the Andaman The Pearl
What comes into the minds of travelers when they start to think about sea, sun and sand? Phuket is an increasingly popular answer when it comes to this question….and for good reason; the island offers a warm tropical ocean, beautiful beaches, stunning scenery and a multitude of opportunities for excitement and fun. Thailand’s largest island, Phuket, is located 862 kilometers south of Bangkok. Often called the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’, or ‘Pearl of the South’, its natural resources; rocky peninsulas, limestone cliffs, white powdery beaches, tranquil broad bays and tropical in-land forests contribute to making it southern Thailand’s wealthiest, busiest, most visited and most popular island and province. Nestled in the tropical zone off the west coast of southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean, the province covers an area of approximately 543 square kilometers (excluding small islets). It’s estimated that Phuket Province covers an area of approximately 590 square kilometers if the other 39 smaller surrounding islands are included. The island’s total length, from north to south, is estimated at 48.7 kilometers and approximately 21.3 kilometers wide. Phuket borders with Phang-Nga Province to the north; connected by the Sarasin Bridge/Thao Thepkasattri Bridge. The remainder of the island is encircled by the Andaman Sea; an area which is home to many of the best diving sites in the country. Staying on the island is easy as there are only two seasons in the year - the rainy season (May to October) and the hot season (November to April). Phuket’s low season is between September and October as these are the wettest months. The best period for a visit is from November to February, during this time it’s possible to see a clear blue sky, feel the fresh sea breeze, and marvel at the crystal clear waters while lying on a powdery, palm-fringed beach. Average temperatures range between 23°C and 33°C.

Phuket’s topology is exceptional with 70 percent of its area covered with mountains which stretch from north to south, and the remaining 30 percent being plains located in the central and eastern parts of the island. The island does not have any major rivers, but has nine smaller brooks and creeks. Phuket has a lot more to offer than just its natural beauty. Sino-Portuguese architecture casts its spell on travelers to Phuket Town, while Phuketstyle hospitality never fails to impress visitors from all walks of life. In addition, accommodation ranging from world-class resorts to tropical-style bungalows caters to the different needs of travelers. For seafood lovers there’s so much choice including Phuket’s famous lobster. Altogether, these characteristics make Phuket a truly unique destination.
How to Get to Phuket Island By plane Phuket International Airport (HKT) is in the North of the island and is Thailand's second largest hub, second only to Bangkok. International ights Australia • AirAsia via Kuala Lumpur • Jetstar with flights from/to all major cities in Australia. Hong Kong • Thai Airways, Dragonair, Hong Kong Express and Air Asia have non-stop direct flights from Hong Kong to Phuket. Hong Kong can connect you to the rest of the world via Cathay Pacific or other major international airlines. Indonesia • AirAsia flies from/to Jakarta and Denpasar in Bali, and this is often the cheapest connection between Thailand and Java and more eastern parts of Indonesia Korea • Asiana Airlines and Korean Air have non-stop services from Seoul with connections from Japan and North America. Malaysia • AirAsia flies to Kuala Lumpur, FireFly flies to Penang using small ATR-Turboprop aircraft, and Malaysia Airlines has flights from/to KualaLumpur. Qatar Airways also offers daily flights from Kuala Lumpur. Philippines • Tiger Air Philippines and Cebu Pacific fly to Manila Qatar • Qatar Airways operates direct daily flights from/to Doha, which connect in Kuala Lumpur. Singapore • SilkAir has 32 flights a week. Low cost alternatives are Thai AirAsia and Tiger Airways. In addition, Jetstar flies to Singapore too. Switzerland • Edelweiss Air has seasonal flights from Zürich United Arab Emirates • Emirates fly directly to Dubai and Air Berlin flies to Abu Dhabi. United Kingdom • Many charters fly to London and in addition other low cost direct connections include Doha, Kuala Lumpur, India, Macau, Seoul, and Busan.
Charter ights European and Asian countries provide some charter flights during high season and are often cheaper than the main international carriers. Domestic ights Nok Air, AirAsia, Orient Thai are domestic low cost airlines which fly to/from Phuket from Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport (DMK). Air fares can be very low if booked well in advance. AirAsia also has several flights a day to/from Chiang Mai, daily to/ from Udon Thani (handy for trips into Laos) and daily to/from Ubon Ratchathani. Thai Airways has several flights a day to/from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and daily from/to Chiang Mai. Bangkok Airways has the monopoly on direct flights between Phuket and U-Tapao – Rayong - Pattaya International Airport (UTP) and Koh Samui (USM), and offer several flights a day to/ from Bangkok. Fares are usually the same as Thai Airways when purchased on the airline's website. Bangkok Airways flights are usually less crowded and the entire journey is more relaxed, plus you can use their lounges for free even as an Economy Class passenger. Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airways fly to Suvarnabhumi Airport. Nok Air, Orient Thai (One Two Go) and AirAsia fly to Don Mueang Airport (DMK). This is very important if you have a connecting flight, the airports are two hours apart by road, or road and train link. By bus Buses to mainland destinations including Bangkok, Chumphon, Hat Yai, Krabi, Phang Nga, Ranong, Satun, Sungai Kolok and Surathani use the new BKS terminal on Thanon Tepkasattree Road in Phuket Town. For information on bus timetables contact the Southern Bus Terminal on Boromratchchonnani Rd., Bangkok. By car Phuket is directly connected to the mainland by the Sarasin Bridge/Thao Thepkasattri Bridge. From Bangkok, take Highway 4 for around 862kms. If you want to drive yourself, there are many car and motorcycle hire firms in Bangkok. Please note that an International Driving License is required for full insurance cover.
Transport d n a l s i e h t n o How much of Phuket have you actually seen? Wouldn't you like to explore some more? Well, here we list some of your options for getting around the island’s highways and byways.
• To and from the airport
Airport transfers are relatively simple. The airport is at the far north of the island, some 30 kilometers from Phuket Town and even further from most of the popular beaches like Patong and Karon. It is best to use one of the two ofcial transport companies with booths right inside the arrival lounge, you can’t miss them. Private Airport Limousines or minibuses are also available to get you to the major beaches at the south or west of the island. Metered taxis are also available. The Airport Bus is a cheaper alternative as long as you are not in a rush. Ask at the airport for their current departure schedules and pricing. Car rental is available and companies such as Budget and National have ofces located in the airport.
• Song Taew
There are very few buses on Phuket and the main form of transport from beach to town is the ‘song taew’; a truck converted to carry passengers in the back on two long benches. They are usually colorful with a sign on front showing where they’re going. These vehicles leave from a set stop by the fresh produce market in Phuket Town, reaching every major beach area on the island. They run approximately every hour but there are no xed schedules, and they run when there are sufcient passengers. When leaving the beach areas to head back to town they usually cruise slowly around the streets picking up passengers. Song-taews are slow but cheap with the fare from Phuket town to Patong now set at just 25THB per person!
• Tuk-Tuk
If you want your own private taxi look for a tuk-tuk, a tiny mini-truck converted in the manner of the bigger song-taew mentioned above to carry about four (or more!) passengers. The tuk-tuk gets its name from the noise its little engine makes. There are eets of these in all major tourist areas and they will take you anywhere for a price. The
10
ITB BERLIN 2014
going rate for the relatively short ride between Patong and Phuket town can be as much as 450 THB, one way! You can also rent one of these tuk-tuks for the day. Expect to pay around 2,000 THB or more. This can be a good way to get about the island if you prefer not to drive yourself.
• Transport by Boat
Regular ferry boat services from Phuket run only to the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Yao Noi and Krabi. There are unscheduled boats to Koh Bon, Racha Yai and Koh Yao Yai. You can get to Koh Lanta by changing boats at Koh Phi Phi. Most people get to the other smaller islands by renting their own speed boats or even by chartering yachts
• Motorcycle Taxi
These will be a new experience for many people and are a convenient, yet nerve wracking, way to get around. All fares must be negotiated before the ride. These taxi motor cycle drivers are easily identied by their special colored jackets showing the location of their home base. Many have the word ‘taxi’ written in English on this jacket. Do not take a taxi from anyone who is not wearing one of these jackets.
• Renting Your Own Car
Since Phuket is quite a large island, renting your own car can be one of the most pleasant ways to get around and it gives you freedom to go where and when you want. Renting is easy; private rental cars are readily found in every beach area and major rental companies operate in most resorts. When renting private vehicles from the side of the road be aware that few of these vehicles have insurance and this can prove disastrous in the event of an accident. Renting a car allows you get off the island and see the beautiful, neighboring provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi. The roads are good and the scenery spectacular, making for a great day out.

KAMALA BEACH Kamala is a 3-kilometer long beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast which has undergone recent developments to its main street, but the beach remains largely unchanged. Behind the beach lies a growing village with two distinct communities; Buddhists by the beach and Muslims further back at the foot of the encompassing mountain range.

STOP WORRYING g n o t a P e v o L o t n r a e L and
The Patong Bay area of Phuket conjures up images of heaving beer bars, strutting ladyboys, souvenir stalls by the hundred, and a myriad of tailors who can sell you a low priced suit in nine different languages. The island’s most famous tourist area can be compared to a beauty queen with smudged makeup, but beware of the handcuffs she carries in her purse. She’ll make your dreams come true and then leave you broke, hung over, exhausted, and grinning from ear to ear the morning after.
Patong has so many accommodation options that it’s hard to choose the best for your own needs. Obviously budget is a factor, but the incredible range of competition actually keeps prices pretty reasonable.
Shop ‘til you Drop, Flop or Bop!
If shopping’s your thing then Patong’s the right place. The line between browsing and just walking down the street is extremely blurred in Patong as the sidewalks are crowded with vendors selling souvenirs, T-shirts, DVDs and a myriad of other bric a brac. Ocean Shopping Plaza on Bangla Road is the place to nd mobile phones and accessories, along with a number of clothing shops. Jungceylon is a sprawling shopper’s delight with every variety of stores, plus endless restaurants and bars, an entire cinema and entertainment complex, and loads of parking downstairs if you need it.
Relaxing Spas
After all that fun and nightlife, not to mention days spent sunbathing at the beach, and Patong’s abundant great food and drink, it’s sometimes really wonderful just to kick back and relax with a healthy invigorating visit to a wellness spa or massage retreat..
I Love the Nightlife
Shopping and dining are all well and good, but what makes Patong famous is its unforgettable nightlife. When darkness falls Patong resembles an anthill that’s been run over by a cavalry charge. Or, at least it would if ants could drink
beer, sing loudly and had iPhones. The bars, discos and restaurants light up the night and the musical cacophonies are relentless. Don’t try to gure out what’s going on; just let the endless energy of Patong’s thousands of party goers pull you in. You may not remember exactly what happened the next morning, but somehow you’ll never forget it either!
Phuket Simon Cabaret

For sheer entertainment, our set designs are outstanding, costume extravagant and the performers glamorous! In the exclusive, luxurious and intimate theatre with hi-tech sound and lighting equipment. MAIKHAO BEACH Keeps on Rocking!
Let us introduce you to the burgeoning northwest corner of Phuket which is growing in popularity and status as a distinct unspoiled destination for local residents and visitors alike.
Peace and quiet are becoming rare on Phuket and can now only be found in a few places, of which Mai Khao is denitely one. Here it’s a vision of a tropical island as it used to be. The sand stretches for miles, palms sway in the breeze, barely another person can be seen and the sea is begging for you to swim. There are a few big-name Mai Khao resorts now but on the whole the area has yet to be overtaken by development. Part of the reason is because Mai Khao is actually part of Sirinat National Park and as a result much of the land is protected. The National Park is a fantastic attraction spread over 90 square kilometers and comprising a saltwater mangrove forest, a nature trail with a huge wooden walking platform and a wide variety of plants and animals. Mai Khao remained undeveloped and largely ignored by tourists as late as the turn of the Millennium and only two visionaries seemed to see any potential in ‘White Tree Beach’ …one reptilian and the other human. Leather Back and Ridley’s Sea Turtles have laid their eggs on Mai Khao since time immemorial …literally so, since this 850 kilogram species has been around for at least 150 million years. Shopping in the Mai Khao Beach area was a bit lacking in the past but nowadays, thanks to the opening of Bill Henencke’s Turtle Village, holiday shopping is readily available. Located a short walk from the Anantara and JW Marriott resorts this uniquely designed 'village' has two levels and covers over 3,000 square meters of retail space. Here you can nd gifts, Thai souvenirs, clothing, and it even has its own Coffee Club and Bill Bentley Pub.

S E H C A E B O A T G N A SURIN and B
e is d a r a P in s r e n t r a P
Surin Beach lying a few kilometers north of Kamala on Phuket’s north-west coast is one of the most beautiful on the island. The remnants of an over-grown golf course have kept the hotels well away from the sand so that the resorts and small town are set back from the water’s edge. The beach lies between two headlands -- Laem Singh to the south and Laem Son to the north. The latter is home to the Amanpuri Resort, while the southern headland has the smaller and lovely Laem Singh Beach which can only be reached by boat or by climbing down the steps from the road. During peak season from November to April the crystal clear Surin waters are calm and suitable for swimming and snorkeling. The rocks at the far ends of the beach are good for spotting colorful aquatic creatures like the abundant parrot sh. Umbrella chairs can be rented on the beach and there's usually a speedboat for banana boat rides and water-skiing. During the June to October south-west monsoon season, waves of four feet or more pound Surin and so with rip tides and drop-offs, swimming is denitely not recommended when the red ags are ying. Although Surin Beach is popular with tourists and locals alike, Surin Town itself not particularly busy, more like a coastal village, with the up-market Surin Plaza at its center. The fine white sands and turquoise waters of the area make for a picturesque backdrop to the large numbers of luxurious hotels, villas and condos, as well as the superb selection of restaurants and wine bars which abound.
From May to October there are on occasion large waves which make swimming dangerous, so always take note of the red ags when they're ying. Bang Tao’s atmosphere is positively sleepy, so this is a good place to come to relax and do nothing more strenuous than read a book.
The Laguna Phuket Golf Club is an 18-hole delight
meandering through lagoons and verdant greens. There is professional instruction and a putting green available should you require them.

They offer more than 20 Australian, Appaloosa, Thai horses and ponies for riding, our horses and ponies are professionally trained and friendly; whether you are a novice or an experienced rider you will have great fun with them.
Bang Tao Beach and the Laguna Complex
Heading north from Surin you will next come to Bang Tao Beach which at six kilometers in length, is one of Phuket's longest and usually pretty quiet even though there is a fait amount of resort development going on here. Bang Tao tends to be used almost exclusively by guests of the hotels here. From November to April the sea is at, calm and clear, with good snorkeling opportunities along the rocks at the northern end.

S E H C A E B A T A K d n a KARON
e is d a r a P in s r e n t r a P
As soon as you complete the torturous road snaking south over the huge hills from Patong you enter a totally different world. The view of the broad & majestic Karon Beach’s golden sand meeting your eye says it all. You have survived the excitement of Patong and now you are blessed with the prospect of experiencing a quintessential tropical island beach, picture postcard perfect and awaiting your pleasure. While it’s true that Karon and Kata’s gorgeous beachfronts are developing rapidly, the area still has a liberating feel after the intensity of Patong, and less populated pockets are readily found offering delightful quiet cafes and bars in which to enjoy a few cold ones and watch the rest of the world hurtle by. The beach road, once nearly void of development, now features a string of mainly top-end resorts. Luckily, most are tasteful and set far enough back from the sand to blend into the background hills, which are themselves magnicent and covered in lush green vegetation, with the Big Buddha overlooking the entire scene from atop of the Nakkerd Hills behind Kata Bay. As you drive south from Karon you’ll crest a small headland with an abundance of shops, bars, restaurants and even a Dino Park boasting a “Crazy Golf” area where animatronic, frill-necked Cretaceous Era reptiles applaud your eagles, bogies and birdies! Go further south and you enter the Kata Beach area and its heady penumbra of bars, restaurants, spas and even noisy nightclubs. Kata enjoys a buzz of around-the-clock activity, but if you want to slumber in quite, without being too far from this ongoing party, there are many discreetly placed resorts in both Kata and Karon which will pamper you in relaxed comfort, while you are still only a gentle saunter away from the ongoing party.
30
ITB BERLIN 2014
During the monsoon season, from May to end of October, the surf and oceanic rips make swimming on Karon extremely dangerous, so you’ll have to head to Kata for that, but also here it’s important to pay attention to what the warning ags are telling you on any particular day. From November to end of March both beaches are usually pure delights of soft sand, gentle clear seas, with enjoyable attention from the locals who will be happy to provide you with anything from ice cream to cold beers.
Great Food And Fun Times
The most terric spot for sunset-watching and imbibing is the newly opened Ratri Italian Bar & Grill high on the hill overlooking Kata Bay. Turn off the inland road parallel to Kata Beach and take the steep climb up to their lovely terrace to enjoy the broad panorama of the beach before you devour bounteous bistro-style Italian fare and live bands.
Kata View Point
The view point on the hill behind Kata Noi attracts fewer people and when the heavens turn red, the view from here and any of the beaches can be spectacular.
THE NAI HARN A quiet area at the southern end of Phuket, Nai Harn is one of the island's most beautiful locations and most popular places with in-the-know locals. This tranquil place has only a few hotels including The Royal Phuket Yacht Club, a favorite anchorage for boats during the high season.
South of Phuket
Nai Harn beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Phuket with its excellent water quality. It's framed on both sides by jungle-covered mountains and there's a large freshwater lagoon inland. Never overloaded, even in high season, Nai Harn's usually busier at weekends as it is popular with both Thais and expats. Flat lake-like crystal-clear water invites you for a dip November to May. From June to October on occasion there can be days where larger waves attract surfers and prevent swimming; however, these days are rare. All year round the water is a comfortable 29°C. You're spoilt for choice when it comes to food at Nai Harn Beach. You can order sandwiches, ice creams, cut fruits, and a range of drinks that includes beer, soft drinks and juices directly from your sun-bed rental people, so you don't even have to interrupt your tanning. There's a wealth of choices at the restaurants that line the top of the beach. Most are very reasonably priced and have menus that seem
to go on forever. Pretty much any Thai dish you could want will be available in addition to many international favorites. These restaurants are the ideal place for a sundowner! Just north of Nai Harn, along the coast, is Nui Beach….small, secluded and difcult to access. Further south is Ya Nui, a sandy cove that attracts snorkelers and divers. Another out-of-the way spot nearby is the tiny beach of Ao Sane, a great spot for snorkeling reached by taking the little road that starts through the car park of the Royal Phuket Yacht Club Hotel.

Chalong Bay
Chalong's muddy east coast shoreline makes it unsuitable for swimming, but it's an ideal spot for yacht mooring, so Chalong is a center for intense boating activity. Early mornings and late afternoons are the busiest times when diving and day trip groups are bundled on and off boats. The Ao Chalong Yacht Club, which organizes regular sailing races, makes its base here and its bar is a favorite spot for sailors to swap yarns and party. Chalong is a favorite destination for yachtsman to drop their anchors. Within immediate walking distance of the pier, newcomers will see various types of eating venues, big and small, old and new. The cuisine is not limited to only Thai and seafood but it covers good range of international tastes. Such places include Kan Eang@Pier, Tasanee Seafood, Captain Hook, The Lighthouse and the Anchor Bar. Chalong's most noticeable feature is its 720-meter long, seven-meter wide jetty which replaced the rickety old wooden pier in 2001. A parking area and a number of restaurants, shops, tourist information kiosks and open-air waiting areas have been built to serve the many visitors passing through.
Coral Island
Chalong is also close to many nearby islands where many people enjoy taking day trips. One is Coral Island, about four kilometers southeast of Phuket. This lovely island is home to many hard corals (i.e. brain, boulder and table corals) and a rocky sea bed. It’s a good spot to view many interesting types of tropical marine life such as parrot sh, groupers and buttery sh. Coral Island is quite small, only 800 meters from north to south, and about three kilometers from east to west. The island’s two beautiful white sandy beaches are ideal to relax on after swimming and snorkeling.

RRawai AArea
Rawai became the very rst tourist beach on Phuket. Many years ago people from Phuket Town would drive the 17km to Rawai on weekends to while away the afternoon underneath the beach's Casuarina trees rather than risk the (then) dangerous drive over the hill to Phuket's west coast. Nowadays Rawai is a 'working beach' and a launching point for day boat excursions out to Phuket's surrounding islands. Many long-tail boats available for hire line its shores, and here you can arrange a trip to Coral Island, Koh Lone or Racha Island, or shing or snorkeling trips. The beach is also used as a mooring point for the many shermen who live in the area. Rawai is home to the ve-star resorts, Evason and Mangosteen and quite a few of Phuket's foreign expat population live in the area, lending a Bohemian and laid-back avor to the way of life. Favorite haunts are Friendship Beach towards Chalong, and Rawai's beachfront bars including the iconic Nakita’s.
Promthep Cape
Laem Phromthep, at the very bottom of the island, is on the ‘must see’ list for every Thai visitor. Thus it attracts a eet of tour busses and cars each evening as people come to witness the sun fall into the Andaman Sea.
PHUKET TOWN
r u o T l a ic r o t is H g in k l Wa
Historically speaking, there’s little call to compare ancient European historical sites with Phuket Province’s capital. For a start, it’s only a little over 150 yrs old and very turn-of-the-century Chinese inuenced, but this doesn’t mean that the amateur historian won’t be charmed by the sights to see. In fact, quite the opposite! Here’s a quick walking guide through the most interesting downtown streets. It’s best to start at about four o’clock in the afternoon to avoid the heat of the day. The rst stop on your tour should be Krabi Rd. About halfway down on the north side there’s a distinctively beautiful house and grounds owned by Khun Pracha. He charges 100THB for a tour of his utterly fascinating abode. Rosewood and mother of pearl inlayed furniture, 100 year old water lters and family portraits abound in his ornately decorated house. The guest book speaks for itself with gushy entries from people like Oliver Stone and other media types who’ve lmed in the house. When you’ve nished there, head east, cross the intersection and stroll past the fascinating collection of wedding dress shops, printing houses, textile emporiums and cafes that Thalang Rd, an extension of Krabi Rd offers. At the intersection, turn right and right again into Phang Nga Rd where a bank faces a police station, built to protect it as a result of a Chinese labourer uprising when tin was king on Phuket and tempers ran high.
By now you should have recognized a distinct Chinese architectural inuence on these streets. Actually, if truth be told, these buildings display a Chinese-colonial eclectic influence, even though many travel brochures and magazines gush about the Sino-Portuguese predominance of Phuket’s architecture. Up the road is the quaint and economical On-On Hotel, a backpacker’s venue famous for having served as the Bangkok ophouse in the movie The Beach.

Water Sports in Phuket
Phuket and the Phuket and the surrounding Andaman Sea has gained a reputation as one of the world’s top diving destinations, with the Similan Islands in particular ranked in the world’s top ten sites.
36
ITB BERLIN 2014
There are several factors which make this region one of the best for both learner and experienced divers. For learners, there are world-class instructors at reasonable prices, plus warm clear waters in which to gain condence and experience. Whale sharks, the biggest sh in the ocean at over 10 meters long, are more common in the Andaman dive sites than in any other part of the world, plus many species of large pelagic sh often feed on the stunning reefs. The variety of corals, both soft and hard, is striking, plus warm water and year-round clarity makes this a great place to dive.
Learning to Dive
There are an abundance of 5 star PADI facilities ti where one can learn to dive on Phuket. A dive course will usually take 3 or 4 days, starting in the classroom, then moving to the swimming pool, and nally the open ocean. The result is a diving pass recognized around the world, and it’s difcult to nd a cheaper, more pleasant place to learn.
Diving Daytrips
For those who already have their diving pass there is a good range of day trips available. Destinations include the two Racha Islands south of Phuket, several pinnacles in the direction of Phi Phi, and one large wreck of a car ferry that sank in a near perfect, 30 meter location in the lower Bay.
Diving Live-Aboards
Serious diving enthusiasts come from around the world for extended days-long dive trips. Some run for 10 days and visit neighboring countries, usually Burma. Most divers book these trips in advance, but for those with time and exibility a number of such trips can be booked in Phuket. The Similan Islands, 90 kilometers northwest of Phuket, is the most common live-aboard destination. In good conditions the water visibility is generally in the range of 30 meters and the sea is generally quite calm, making the diving relaxed.
Fishing
The waters around Phuket offer an abundance of game shing opportunities and there are few places where one can catch sailsh regularly. Boats invariably head to the Racha Islands, south of Phuket, where at certain times the deep clear waters attract thousands of sailsh into very small areas rounding up schools of smaller bait sh. Though they can be caught all year round, the monsoon season is particularly good.
A wide id variety i t off other th sh h are also l ttaken k b by ttrolling lli including small tuna, Spanish mackerel, wahoo, dolphin sh and barracuda. Bottom shing can give an even greater variety in the catch.
Sailing
Sailing is the ultimate way of exploring the surrounding region, and there’s nothing better than spending days sailing from island to island and being unhurried and quiet, this allows one time to really unwind and absorb the incredible surroundings. There are a number of large charter companies based in Phuket offering bareboat or crewed cruisers and yachts in Phang Nga Bay and the outlying islands of around Phuket and Krabi.
shopping

Traditional Antiques
All genuine antiques and old piec es of traditional Thai art, including Buddha ima ges, require permits to take them out of the country, but ther e’s a thriv ing and crea tive mar ket in “modern antiques.” Excellent Thai craft skills are app lied to meet the demand for beautiful “old” thing s at reasonable prices. Entrepreneurs carefully ‘age’ wood, bronze and stone artworks prod ucing many beautiful copies of ancient items. Today, whole villages of skilled work ers produce beautiful objects that appear ancient but are sold as ‘reproductions’, at reas onable prices.

Handicrafts
Again, many of these come from Chiang Mai and you can nd a range of exam ples in both Phuket Town and Patong, but there are also craft centers scattered througho ut the island. Thailand produces all kinds of beautiful things crafted from many traditional mat erials including bamboo, cane, silk, wood and paper etc.

Medical Tourism Phuket, Thailand’s Pearl of the South, is an excellent choice for visitors contemplating any medical or dental treatments as the island has several world class hospitals such as Bangkok Hospital Phuket and Phuket International Hospital, each with state-of-the-art equipment, internationally trained and qualiďƒžed doctors, surgeons and medical staff. These hospitals also offer premier services such as international departments and translation services which visitors from many countries greatly appreciate. The friendly, and very customer-centered nature of the services in Phuket medical establishments is another big attraction, and Thai hospitality-based interactions, care and communication greatly enhance the experience for patients, attendant family and friends. Other major medical facilities available on the island, designed to cater to and care for medical tourists from the Middle East, Asia, India, Europe and the US include Mission Hospital Phuket, Patong Hospital, and Phuket Provincial Hospital.

Phuket has developed a well-deserved international reputation for specializing in elective treatments including a range of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, and has a number of top hospitals, doctors, surgeons and other professionals who are specialists in these areas, plus many supporting clinics and medical facilities to back them up. In many ways, Phuket is a dream destination, a mythical tropical island paradise which is certainly wonderful for a well-earned vacation, but also happens to offer world-class medical and dental infrastructure, staff and facilities. Phuket has a modern, highly developed infrastructure; luxury resorts, spas and hotels; a slew of international restaurants; amazing nightlife; wonderfully welcoming people; and an invigorating and healthy climate. Wise travelers journey here and pay 50-70 percent less for their medical, cosmetic or dental treatment than they would back in their home countries. Many combine a relaxing holiday with the medical procedures they need and still come out ďƒžnancially ahead of having the same procedures completed at home!
Or Bor Jor Phuket Hospital New Alternative Choices for Good Health
Phuket Provincial Hospital, or Or Bor Jor Phuket Hospital, was built with the aim of supporting the people of Phuket who were suffering from the lack of equipment and a small number of health service ofcers in government hospitals. That is in addition to helping the Phuket people who cannot afford the high cost of health services in a private hospital. They have brought specialists from Thonburi Hospital, with more than 33 years experience, to manage the hospital and ensure that patients receive the best health services. They have 129 beds within two buildings, one featuring 10 oors for special patients, and the other with 5 floors for general patients and a staff dormitory.
