GETTING TO KNOW
P oomipak Julmanichoti Managing Director of Plus Property Mr.Poomipak Julmanichoti is in charge of Plus Property, the integrated real estate service provider that manages all Sansiri properties in Phuket and Thailand. Here he tells us about the company’s rapidly expanding Andaman region developments. What is your education and background prior to joining Sansiri? My background focused primarily on accountancy, Ànance and management. I received a Bachelor’s Degree from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok in accountancy and Ànance and initially worked for an investment banking company in Thailand, but then went to the USA to take my MBA at the University of Miami. I came back to Thailand to work in the telecoms sector for three years and then joined Sansiri in 2005. I initially focused on new business development outside of their real estate services, but subsequently headed up Plus Property which concentrates on the after-sales services for all our developments in Thailand. The main two areas of this are brokerage, re-sales and rentals and also property management. How is the development scene evolving for Sansiri in Phuket? Phuket is a very active market for us, and Sansiri have four completed condominiums and couple more in the pipeline to be transferred this year. The initial four condominium developments are already sold out, and we, as property manager, are Ànding about 75 percent of the Àrst project, which completed last year are occupied, of those 2/3 are occupied by theowners, while the balance are being rented out. The smallest condos are one bedroom of 30 square meters which are being used essentially as ‘dormitory’ units where people working in the Patong area, both Thai and foreigners, use the unit just to sleep in.
Our Kathu condo developments are more expansive with lifestyle facilities such as swimming pools, gyms, internet and other back-up services, and here we see a much more residential focus. In addition, we also manage two single-detached housing projects and one townhousing project in the KohKaew area that gained impressive feedback from our target audiences. Who are the main target audiences for your developments? We are seeing many foreign workers and professionals, mainly from Russia, renting our condos in the Kathu-Patong area with an average rental period of some eight months. Also many Thai people from other parts of the country are renting from us in Phuket as they also come to work here. The Kathu development attracts more of a lifestyle audience who are coming for holidays or longer residencial periods. Whereas Phuket used to experience a distinct ‘high’ and ‘low’ demand season for us, we now see much more of a year round leveling out for rental demand, as the tourist season itself has become much closer to a 12 months phenomenon. Please tell us about your “Rent a Good Life” branding As the name suggests, these are our property management packages which focus upon people who want to make renting from Plus Property an uplifting lifestyle choice and to make their home, as least for a period of time, in one of our units. The “Rent a Good Life” units are complemented with fully furnished furniture and equipped with electronic appliance, swimming pool, gymnasium and internet. Moreover, our customers can choose additional services such as room cleaning and laundry and even order in food etc. upon request. The packages aim to make the life of our tenants stress-free and enjoyable, so they can focus on their holiday and their lifestyle, while we take care of the everyday running their residence. Life’s a Beach
With a vast array of different beaches on Phuket’s coastline why stick to just the one nearest your hotel? Take a look here at the choices available. · Mai Khao Beach
North of the airport is a beach to really get away from it all. Mai Khao beach is very, very long, and very straight, so it misses the cozy feeling enjoyed by many of the other beaches on the island, but the sand and water here are just as stunning plus it’s almost empty! The place feels deserted even during high season when the beach umbrellas are Àve deep on Patong.
Surin Beach
· Nai Yang Beach
Just south of the airport is Nai Yang, a charming beach with a unique atmosphere all of its own. With just a scattering of hotels and bars to entertain the few that stay there, Nai Yang is as relaxed as they get. Ever dreamed of eating seafood right on the beach? This is your spot.
· Nai Thon Beach
A little further south from Nai Yang is Nai Thon, possessing a similar feel to its big brother, Nai Thon has long been a favorite with the regular visitors to the island. This quiet bay nestled at the foot of high hills has a Àne strip of sand and a handful of pleasant eateries are situated just off the beach.
· Layan Beach
This is a small and relatively unknown beach, nestled in a shallow bay at the northern end of Bang Tao. You get there by following the small road that winds right through the back holes of the Banyan Tree Golf Club. Layan Beach is more of a bay than a beach, and although very picturesque the water is quite shallow; great for families but if you fancy a real swim it’s not the place to go.
Laem Singh
Beach
· Bang Tao Beach
Bang Tao Beach has in recent years seen a lot of development with many 5-star luxury resorts in the area but the beach remains very pleasant. At certain times of the year swimming can be dangerous due to the strong currents. At the northern end of the beach the coral creates good opportunities for snorkeling.
· Surin Beach
Surin Beach is located between Bang Tao and Kamala beach. It is one of most beautiful beaches on the island with Àne white sand and emerald sea. The beach can have rather strong winds which make it ideal for windsurÀng. A lot of popular resorts surround this beach.
· Laem Singh Beach
Laem Singh Beach is small and very popular; it is located between Surin and Kamala. To reach the beach you need to walk down a short, rocky trail that is clearly signposted. If you are lucky and it’s not too crowded then Leam Sing Beach is absolutely stunning.
· Kamala Beach
Kamala is a 3-kilometer long beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast which has undergone recent developments to its main street, but the beach remains largely unchanged. Behind the beach lies a growing village with two distinct communities; Buddhists by the beach and Muslims further back at the foot of the encompassing mountain range. Nai Yang Beach

· Patong Beach
The most famous beach on the island is the center of entertainment, restaurants, shopping and hotels. Patong is indeed a famous beach with beautiful soft sands and warm clear water. But right behind the beach is the hustle and bustle at the center of Phuket’s tourism business. Here the hotels, restaurants, entertainment and bar areas, street bazaars and shops are crammed in a colorful and lively mix that typiÀes a Thai tourist beach town.
· Paradise Beach
Paradise Beach is a little beach just 5 minutes south of Patong. To get there follow a small cement road up to the hill through the jungle. It is a nice small beach with white, soft sand and large rocks Áanking either side.
· Karon Beach
Karon is another of the beautiful, west-coast beaches that have made Phuket famous. This beach is the Àrst main stop south of Patong, and is separated from Patong by a large headland. A quick 10 minute drive connects the two.
· Kata Beach
Kata is certainly one of the most beautiful of Phuket’s beaches; a half-moon crescent of white sand lining a bay cut deep between two green headlands. Crystal clear waters and soft coral offers excellent snorkeling and just outside the bay lies a small rounded island that seems to wave its coconut haircut to those on the beach.
· Nai Harn Beach
Nai Harn is one of the more isolated beaches, nestled at the southern tip of the island in a bay deÀned by headlands and islets. The beach is backed by the green of Casuarina trees and coconut palms, acting as shade for the restaurants that now line the beach.
· Ao Yon Beach
Ao Yon is another peaceful beach ideally suited for watching the sunset. It is located near Cape Panwa, 10km from Phuket Town. Although quiet with beautiful emerald sea this beach is not really suitable for bathing or relaxing as the bay is usually full of boats and yachts. Kamala Beach

· Kata Noi Beach
Just south of Kata Beach is Kata Noi, a smaller beach with only a few hotels and little other development. The beach is superb for snorkeling as many Àsh inhabit the rocks and corals along the headland to the south.

· Ao Sane Beach
Ao Sane beach is a small bay and is located to the north of Nai Harn beach. To get to this beach you need to go through The Royal Phuket Yacht Club. Ao Sane is a very small, rocky beach but it is peaceful.

n the Island
It’s a big island,
offering all manner of things to do. It’s surprising that so many holiday makers, who are trying to get away from it all, soon get bored with that dreamy combination of a perfect beach, a comfortable hotel room and great food. After a few days, most people want more. They want to go places, to see how the local people live and to experience new things. Happily with Phuket being a large island, about 50 kilometers long, there are all sorts of interesting things to do here. Below we offer some suggestion.
www.theguidephuket.com
• Crowned Beach, Quiet Beach Find the one that suits you spend most of your holiday in Patong and you might think the beaches of Phuket are crowned. While Patong buzzes with people and activity, there are many other beaches to which one can escape in complete solitude. You just have to drive. As one moves away from patong the beaches become progressively quieter. By the time you get to the top of the island you’re guaranteed kilometers of sand to yourself, even in peak season, so remember crowned beach, quiet beach; the choice is there. • Visiting Wats – Buddhist Monasteries All Buddhist Monasteries are open to the public during the day, and visitors are usually welcome. Since these are active holy places of worship, and the residence of monks, visitors should show respecting keeping well dressed and remaining quiet, Mum and Dad; keep the kids on a leash and always be culturally sensitive. • Elephant Trekking The wild elephant population of Phuket was wiped out last century, but has been replaced in recent years by and inÁux of animals for the tourist trade. Today there remains just a few hundred elephants on Phuket Island, all domesticated, most working in tourism. Indeed, riding an elephant is an experience not to be missed. The lumbering monsters are incredibly agile. Taking an elephant ride helps to keep the beasts employed, fed and out of the cities, where many can be taken by destitute owners in search of money and food. • Phuket Town Phuket Town is small but incredibly interesting, a potpourri of different cultural influences of markets and shopping centers, restaurants and other entertainment facilities. Anyone spending a few days on Phuket Island should take time to visit, be it for sight-seeing, cultural or historical interest or shopping. • Zoo Phuket’s only zoo is small, but pleasant, displaying some of Thailand’s almost vanished wildlife. Their tigers are fed well enough that one can sit with them and have a photo taken. We recommend going early or late, to avoid the tour buses that arrive mid morning and mid afternoon. It is in a small road off the east side of Chao Fah East Road, about half way between the town and Chalong’s 5-way intersection. The turnoff is well signposted and easy to Ànd.
Activities

• Bungy Jump Consider yourself adventurous? Got real guts? If you haven’t tried bungee jump yet, you should take the ride to the top with a big rubber band around your ankles and Àght the internal struggle that every jumper meets when standing 54 meters above the ground. Logic might tell us it is quite safe, but another part of our body screams “No! Don’t jump!” But with their friends at the bottom, waiting expectantly, most people manage to throw themselves off and experience a rush like no other. • Cultural Village Cultural shows featuring skilled Thai dancers from the different regions of the country, martial arts demonstrations, elephant rides and Thai dinners are all brought together at Phuket’s original cultural garden; there is also attached orchid farm for all the budding botanists out there. • Jungle Trekking With most of rainforest on Phuket long since eaten up by rubber plantations, it is not easy to Ànd ideal trekking grounds. Again, it’s best to sign on with company providing this service. Often they take their trekkers right off Phuket into neighbouring Phang Nga province, where some beautiful areas of forest remain. • Spas Massage and herbal steam rooms Health resorts, spas and herbal saunas are proliferating, and some fine example offering a wide range of treatments are now found on Phuket. Thailand has its own traditional herbal saunas, and there are several local ones around the island. While many large and resorts now feel they are incomplete without a spa, there are also several independent establishments. • View Points Phuklet’s most famous view point, Laem Phrom Thep at the very bottom of the island, is on the ‘must see’ list for every Thai visitor to the island. Thus it attracts a Áeet of tour busses and car each evening as people come to witness the sun fall into the Andaman Sea. Indeed, it’s often a spectacular sight, but there are many quieter places. The view point on the hill behind Kata Noi attracts fewer people and when the heavens turn red, the view from any of the beaches can also be spectacular.

Tiger Kingdom Putting the Cats in Kathu Tiger! Tiger! Burning bright In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye Dare frame thy fearful symmetry? In 1794 when poet William Blake wrote those lines he had little idea that the awe-inspiring subjects of his poem would Ànd their way to a new Tiger Kingdom close to the Go-Kart track in Phuket’s Kathu region, just below Patong Hill. Entering the extensive, well-treed grounds of the Tiger Kingdom you are Àrstly struck by the quietude and feeling of normality. Only after a while do you become aware that close at hand are many of these frankly majestic beasts lolling around, immersing themselves in the cooling pools, or indeed being petted and cuddled by abundant visiting locals and tourists….all of whom, adults and kiddies alike, wear huge smiles of stunned admiration on their faces. There are presently 27 tigers enjoying life at Tiger Kingdom, with another 33 scheduled to arrive from the sister Tiger Park near Chiang Mai in the near future. And enjoy life they certainly seem to do, being well fed and cared for by their handlers who have been with them since birth. Phonphawit Ton-On is the enthusiastic and knowledgeable Chief of the park and says, “The tigers are used to being around humans from day one, and are also fed with chicken morning and evening,
so as long as we treat them with respect, they are just about as friendly and accommodating as your domestic tabby-cat at home.” The Kingdom offers close up encounters with varying sizes of felines form skittish little cubs, who are extremely kitten-like, right up to the three year old big boys weighing in at over 200 kilos, with their huge retractable claws and impressive dentition to match. Depending upon the package you buy, you can interact with, and indeed lie down and cuddle, many different sizes of tiger, all the while having your photos shot for you by a professional who will hand you a CD at the end of your adventure.

Overlooking the park’s tiger enclosures, with their high electriÀed fences, is a terriÀc balcony restaurant which is ideal for families to dine on either the a la carte menu, or all-you-can-eat buffet encompassing a huge section of Thai, Asian, Chinese and European dishes upon which to graze while watching the tiger’s activities. At just 400 baht per adult and 200 baht per child, the buffet is extremely good value, and the location and views have to make it one of the most stunning in which to dine in all Phuket. The tigers are happy, healthy, and of course safe from poachers and other dangers that are sadly threats to them in today’s world. A breeding program is in place continually helping to increase the tiger population, and they all enjoy regular exercise and health check-ups and vaccinations etc. In fact, if William Blake were alive today and had the pleasure of visiting Tiger Kingdom he might have written: Tiger! Tiger! Burning bright At Tiger Kingdom in Kathu, What immortal hand or eye Makes for tigers as lucky as you? Great Cuisine, Jazz and Views at Vijitt’s Friendly Sunday Lunch
Ah….another lazy Sunday in Phuket at last with a little time just to relax and indulge in some great cuisine and live jazz while overlooking one of the island’s most sensational vistas, as the little ones are taken care of in the Kids’ Club. That’s the magic formula which has made the delightful Vijitt Resort’s Family Sunday Lunch so well-loved and successful. You descend through Vijitt’s extensive verdant grounds beside cascading, lily-Àlled pools and waterfalls, then past their huge beach-side swimming pool and enter the breezy open sided sala, or enclosed air-conditioned section of their Savoury Restaurant. Somehow you immediately start to feel supremely relaxed and happy. You’re greeted by smiling staff who lead you to your table commanding the most stunning views across Chalong Bay with its dreaming offshore islands and the more distant karsts of Phang Nga Bay etched onto the horizon. You savor the delicious aromas of the cornucopia of foods on offer, tune into the cool live jazz and let the children loose to explore the huge grounds, go swimming, or hit the Kids’ Club. Yes indeed you think…. life doesn’t get much better than this! Now, where to start on the sumptuous array of food choices? How about fresh sushi and sashimi? Or maybe a platter of oysters, shellÀsh, prawns and lobster accompanied by selections from the abundant salads? Oh, but wait! There are also the various cooking stations where the chefs will conjure up foie gras, or a selection of Àsh, meats and poultry prepared to your own speciÀcations. Oh, and don’t forget the Thai food, or the pastas and pizzas and of course you simply MUST leave space for a sampling of the desserts, homemade ice cream, fruits and then a selection of cheese and biscuits! AND don’t forget the chocolate fountain!! OK, you think this is getting complicated and needs some thoughtful planning. I know, let’s just start with a crisp glass of cold white wine and saunter around taking it all in so you can formulate your “lunching strategy”…..and so the perfect Sunday lunch begins to unfold!! The Vijitt’s Sunday Lunch Buffet is from 12-3pm, but quite frankly with so much choice and with such a seductively laid-back atmosphere, many guests take advantage of the www.theguidephuket.com
offer to linger longer and swim in the pool, or just continue to relax and enjoy the wonderful grounds until the 6pm Happy Hour kicks in! Hmmm…why can’t it be Sunday seven days a week?? Sunday Lunch is B1,099 per person with free soft drinks or B1,399 per person with a bottle of white or red wine per couple, or B3,099 per person with a bottle of bubbly per couple. The Rawai-Nai Harn Business Association’s card gets you a 15% discount and kiddies are half price and ankle biters of four and under are free! Beachside Lunch
As Easy as OBC The beautiful indoor/outdoor restaurant within Phuket Hilton Arcadia Resort and Spa’s Ocean Beach Club commands relaxing views across both Karon Beach and the limpid waters of the Beach Club’s huge swimming pool. It’s the ideal place for a languorous lunch for Phuket residents and tourists alike and Executive Chef Junious Dickerson and his team are currently working their culinary magic to terriäc eèect. We had the pleasure of lunching at OBC on a sweltering day in March, yet the shade and fans of the airy poolside sala provided the necessary sanctuary of breezy shade within which to enjoy the tasty pleasures of Chef Junious’s newly developed menu. Chef Junious hails from the USA and brings to the Phuket Hilton a wealth of international experience which shows through strongly in the tastes, Áavors and ethnic mix of dishes featured in the OBC’s large lunchtime menu. Chef Junious’s objective is to present an eclectic selection of Asian dishes to meet the most exacting demands of their global audience, mixed in with classic lunchtime Western dishes. This leads to interesting counterpoints in the available selection allowing, say more conservative eating children to devour a classic burger or spaghetti carbonara, while their more adventurous parents savor Malaysian Ox-Tail curry, Beef Bulogogi or Phad Thai noodles with seafood. The menu offers a terriÀc range of starters including soft shell crab tempura, poached oysters on the half shell with Thai seafood, or a hand-crafted selection of fresh sushi. The salad selection is as fresh and healthy as the starter offerings with Asian caprese salad, chicken tikka salad, classic Caesar salad or grilled Thai beef salad to keep the healthy crowd happy.

The sandwich selection is extensive and such Áavorful options such as a falafel pita wrap with chickpeas, tabbouleh and cucumber pickles; a traditional Sicilian style sub-sandwich with layered salami, mortadella, ham, Gouda and Gruyere cheeses and olives; or a salmon BLT all extremely tasty and healthy in equal measure. Or consider an Ocean Burger with grilled blackened Àsh Àllet with lettuce and tomato, or a Beach Burger with Angus beef, prosciutto ham, rocket and barbeque sauce. There are plenty of hearty pastas…..spaghetti, tortellini, linguini and my own personal favorite, seafood penne. The main event features everything from fried rice to a Phuket crab meat curry, to selections of meat and seafood grouped under headings such as: “From the Sea” (salmon, calamari steak, Canadian lobster or tuna steak); “From the Land (T-Bone steak, lamb chops, or baby rack pork spare ribs); “From the Sky” (chicken, or duck breast) and “From the Garden” (vegetable skewers, Tandoori paneer and capsicum skewer, or grilled portobello mushrooms). Finally, the dessert selection does not disappoint and such treats as dulce de leche cheesecake, mango creme brulee, or yoghurt pannacotta complemented by ice cream or tropical fruit skewers provide the perfect conclusion to a perfect lunch. OBC’s drink selection is as comprehensive as its cuisine with every conceivable juice, smoothies, milkshakes, tea, coffee, beer, wine and cocktail option readily available. All things considered, lunch at the OBC with it lovely setting, great food and friendly staff is an ideal choice and makes enjoying yourself as easy as “OBC”. Having received many visits from both friends and family over the past couple months, I have felt very tired and had lots of tension. The reason for this I believe is because I had to accompany them on many visits, and took part in many adventurous activities. In view of this I decided to take a spa treatment which I thought would help relax and balance my body before returning to work the following day. The spa I decided to visit was “RarinJinda Wellness Spa” in Patong. This stand-alone spa & wellness building is located on Phang Muang Sai Gor Road – near the Banzan market and just a Àve-minute walk from Phuket’s biggest mall -Jungceylon. RarinJinda Wellness Spa is one of Thailand’s leading wellness spas with expert therapists and the latest in spa technology. RarinJinda has been awarded many prizes including the prestigious Amazing Medical/Wellness Spa from the Thailand Spa & Well-Being Awards 2013 event. Having opened its doors only one year ago, the Phuket branch is the newest branch to open following the opening of their Àrst branch, with full facilities including accommodation, in Chiang Mai and a second located on the 8th Floor of the Grande Centre Point Hotel Ratchadamri, in the center of Bangkok. I was very surprised when I first stepped into the spa; the ambiance inside this new four-story spa building is so differwww.theguidephuket.com
ent from the outside world, among the crowds of Patong. I was very impressed that this modernly decorated building, with a touch of local identity could cut out all the noise from outside and offer such an ambiance of serenity. I glanced over the menu and chose a treatment I thought could help me heal my tensions and stress. This done as I sipped on a fresh welcoming drink served along with a cold towel to cool me down from the heat outside. There were many treatments to choose from: Hot Stone Massage, Ayuravedic Hideaway, Aromatherapy Oil Massage, and Royal Siamese Retreat. In addition, RarinJinda also offers a variety of luxurious indulgences such as Vichy Shower, Infrared Sauna and Herbal Steam. It also has various wellness treatments including Detox Programs, Cellutec Programs, and BodyStat Programs – all performed in the presence of well trained and professional health specialists. Finally, I opted for the “Elements of Life” treatment as I thought this could help me balance both my inner soul and body. Before my treatment started “Khun Aom” - my therapist – led me to the foot scrubbing area she rubbed my feet gently with a herbal salt scrub, then soaked them in warm water, I already felt more relaxed than when I Àrst arrived.
Health & Beauty

She then led me to the Elements of Life’s treatment room on the second Áoor; this private treatment room accommodates a bed with warmed quartz stones which were awaiting for me to lie on. I have learnt from my visit that it is believed that this treatment is the key to wellness, balancing nature’s four elements; energy: water, Àre, earth and wind. This RarinJinda Elements of Life therapy seeks to restore a person’s balance with nature through a combination of water, Àre, earth, and wind treatments. Fire and earth treatments consist of a heated bed of quartz stones to ease away rheumatic and muscle tensions; followed by the sound of therapeutic Tibetan wind chimes for inner peace and relaxation. The Ànale, an aromatherapy cold water splash, will restore your spiritual and physical balance with nature. I laid my back down on that warmed quartz stone bed, feeling the heat under me, and my nerves and muscles were relieved after a gentle massage from Khun Aom’s hands. The treatment took 90 minutes and combines Thai & Japanese or “Shiatsu” massage with the sound therapy of the ringing of the Tibetan’s bowls. I can honestly say I didn’t know where I was during the treatment; I was in such a deep sleep as it was so relaxing. I only awoke again when Khun Aom asked me to turn over and sprayed the fresh aromatic water over my entire; that was the Ànal step of the treatment. After more than an hour of this deeply relaxing treatment, I got up feeling so fresh and revitalised. This Elements of Life therapy certainly helped me with this new amazing feeling. I left the therapy room and was then served a cup of herbal tea and delicious sticky rice with mango. It was a shame I didn’t spend more time exploring more menus there…. But I have promised myself, I will revisit this exotic place again in the very near future… RarinJinda … iIt’s not just about Spa Treatments… RarinJinda Wellness Spa Phuket 184/14 Pangmuang Sai Kor Road, Patong, Kathu, Phuket Tel: +66 (0)76 366 800 www.rarinjinda.com www.facebook.com/theguidephuket

Beauties..
of the monsoon season in the Phuket region Just one word, ‘monsoon’, makes people forget about beachfront vacations. But it does attract a few – those who understand the full realities of this neglected time of year: that during the rainy season there are not so many days of rain; that during the monsoon season all of Thailand turns lush and green; that this time of year can be the coolest, quietest and most relaxing of all; that there are fewer tourists in the resorts; that prices are down, service is up and that there is a whole range of other things to do and enjoy.
Here are some of the delights of the monsoon season in Phuket and along Thailand’s Andaman coast. • Cooler weather Following the hot-hot, near-breathless months of March and April that have all of Thailand gasping for breath, the cooling off that the monsoon brings is welcomed across the land. September is the coolest month of the year on southern beaches, the result of heavier cloud cover and cool ocean winds. • Fewer people, better service Some people hate crowds. At this time of year it’s so much easier to have things to yourself, your way. Low season means fewer people and better service – often at cheaper rates – in restaurants, markets and other service establishments. • Catch a bargain – they’re everywhere With hotels emptying during the May - October rainy season, room rates plunge along beaches across the country. Andaman destinations offer especially good bargains, for this coast takes more effect from the southwest winds than the Gulf islands. www.theguidephuket.com
• Fewer people, a beach to yourself A beach to oneself is a dream that many people hold, but few realize. It represents romantic tranquility and perfect isolation. During the monsoon months there is no trouble Ànding a beach to oneself along the Andaman coast, even on a popular tourist island like Phuket. • Spectacles of nature The electric power of the natural world is on full display during the monsoon season, particularly during the early months of May and June. The skies display roiling changes as dark clouds churn across the skies, breaking light into shafts and allowing some to Àre through like beams from a giant’s Áashlight. Rainbows point to pots of gold all across the land. By late afternoon towering thunderheads come alive, Àring lightning bolts and claps of thunder as if the gods were at war within. • Photography – catch those blue breaks If you love photography, you should love the early months of the monsoon season with the towering thunderheads and electrical storms that are so common then. These provide backgrounds of beauty and visual power. However, through the entire monsoon there are regular breaks as the southwest winds die down and blue skies break out all over. For most photography lovers, these are the ideal conditions.

• Boating in the protected waters of Phang Nga Bay The Andaman region is blessed through all 12 months of the year by Phang Nga Bay. This calm body of water is perfectly protected from wind and waves no matter how big or from which direction they come. This spectacular bay of vertical, rocky monoliths lies directly to the back of Phuket, which forms the western barrier that keeps it mill-pond calm through the monsoon season. • Driving tours through a lush, green countryside Want to see and experience the real Thailand? You might Ànd some of the best beaches in Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi and Koh Lanta, but it’s difÀcult to Ànd that authentic ‘Thai’ experience in these famous tourist destinations. However, a rental car, a tank of fuel and a map can take you just a few kilometres up the local highway and deliver you to the real Thailand. • The rain forests ‘blossom’ at this time of year Want to see the rainforests of the Andaman at their best? The rainy season is the time when nature blooms, not with Áowers, but with new life in myriad forms. Though the world is fast running out of untouched rainforests, and Thailand has destroyed most of its own, there are still some outstanding examples close to Phuket. Khao Sok is largest forested area in the region, and just a two- or 3-hour drive to the North. • Beach fun of a different kind Many visitors love the waves thrown up during the monsoon season. This is not a season for inexperienced swimmers to jump in, and sometimes weak swimming do get into danger in rip currents. However, the numbers who enjoy the monsoon season waves without incident is testimony to the fact that body surÀng, or just playing in the waves, is a very popular activity indeed. A Ray of Sunil-shine at Sawaddi Patong Resort & Spa Sawaddi Patong Resort & Spa nestling in the heart of Patong behind the Jungceylon Shopping Center has recently gained the considerable talents of their new sous-chef Sunil Kumar who hails from northern India. We caught up with Sunil on the terrace of the resort’s lovely Roydi Restaurant overlooking their central swimming pool. Sunil Kumar started his culinary journey and career in 2005 when he joined the kitchen staff of a famous Àve star hotel near to his home in Shimla in northern India. Shimla is one of India’s most famous and visited tourist centers and in 1864 it was declared the summer capital of British India and after independence became the capital of Punjab and was later named the capital of Himachal Pradesh. For four years at the hotel Sunil received promotions as he learned his trade and developed his obvious passion for great Indian cuisine. Naturally enough, as a young man he wanted to see more of the world and so accepted a position working in a restaurant in Kuwait with an international audience of discerning diners who appreciated the culinary magic he worked with lamb, chicken, Àsh, curries, ginger, onions, tomatoes, turmeric, bay leaves, chili powder, cream and butter. So much of Sunil’s northern Indian culinary alchemy was created out of the heat of his trusty charcoal-Àred Tandoori oven and his roti, naan and butter-naan breads and accompanying Indian dishes soon became the talk of the town. Sunil’s wanderlust and quest to share his cooking with an even wider audience brought him to Thailand in 2010, working Àrstly in Bangkok and then luckily for us, he moved to Phuket in January this year to join the team at Sawaddi Patong Resort. Sunil is now sous-chef at Sawaddi and prepares not only his Indian cuisine, but also all sorts of other food types including European, traditional Thai, seafood, barbeque, pasta and pizza dishes. Roydi, in the southern Thai dialect means “delicious” and Sunil is dedicated to bringing exactly that desirable quotient to all the varieties of cuisine that the kitchen prepares. Southern Thai food is a specialty of the charming Roydi Restaurant and Sunil works alongside a team of local Thai experts to produce their distinctive offering of exquisite dishes that characterize the region. Authentic Phuket-style curries, rice and noodle-based dishes are a regular feature on the menu as are the region’s signature desserts.

Pimalai Resort & Spa celebrates their tenth annual Clownfish release The name “Pimalai’ is a derivation from Sanskrit meaning “a little patch of Heaven” and this wonderful resort and spa set in stunning natural surrounding on Koh Lanta’s southwest coast is exactly that. Peace, Serenity, Solitude…..are the words that come to mind for Pimalai. Add to these elegance, natural surroundings and genuine friendly service. The resort combines all the right ingredients – subtle Àve star comforts, natural beauty, far from the crowds, with no noise except the waves slowly breaking onto a pristine sandy shore. Pimalai is also a pioneer in social and environmental initiatives and in March 2014 once again organized the release of 200 clownÀsh at the nearby dive sites adjacent to the islands of Koh Ha. It is predicted that 30 percent of those will survive predatory attack by Ànding safe haven in specially designed cages placed on the sea Áoor and within the tendrils of the abundant sea anemones which is the natural habitat for these creatures. Building on the success of the clownÀsh program, this year a trial release of seahorses was also tested last year and will be incorporated into the program in future years. For the past ten years, Pimalai have had the same mission: to demonstrate that when you break a circle of life and when you do something wrong to nature, it is not easy to bring it back. Money, manpower and a lot of heartfelt effort have been injected into this mission to make it feasible and Pimalai aims to raise awareness that by responsible human action, the pace of Nature’s destruction can be slowed down. GETTING TO KNOW the Southern Andaman Region of Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta
as it could actually be classiÀed as a mud Áat, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumping activity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high difÀcult rating. Pra Nang Beach Connected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local Àshermen leave offerings for good fortune. Three hours drive south from Phuket through stunning limestone cliffs and dense forest brings you to the southern playground of the Krabi region of the Andaman overlooking Phang Nga Bay with its many scattered islands, hidden bays and beaches. Throw away your watch and bask in nature’s beauty or snorkel, dive, rock climb, Àsh, kayak, hike, sail, party, spa or wine and dine to your heart’s content – this region has it all. Ao Nang Beach Just 18 km from Krabi Town is beautiful Ao Nang with its 83 scattered islands. Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and majestic limestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beaches including East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range. Noppharat Thara Beach Just 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined with majestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides. Railay Beach This beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. West Railey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang. East Railey which lies across the peninsula from West Railey is different from other beaches in the area

Klong Muang Beach/Tubkaak Krabi’s latest beach destination, Muang Klong boasts both 5-star and boutique hotels like the Sheraton Krabi Resort, the Nakamanda and the Tubkaak Resort and offers powderwhite sand and safe swimming. The Lanta Island Group About 53 islands are included in this group situated at the southern limit of Krabi Province. Koh Lanta Yai is the largest and is both a traveler’s and up-market vacationer’s paradise and is as yet relatively undeveloped. You can get to Lanta on the regular ferry from Jao Fah Pier in Krabi Town. The prime attractions are its long beaches, clear water, laid back atmosphere and scuda diver’s paradise where most of the nicest beaches and tourist attractions are located. The Phi Phi Islands Known for phenomenal natural beauty, particularly the famous twin bays with their the curving beaches upon which lies the largest town. Phi Phi islands are some of the most beautiful in the world with superb scenery, silvery sand beaches and Emerald green seas with coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. Hardly two hours journey by boat from Ao Nang, the twin islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh provide excellent accommodation options and are known as major “party islands.” Poda Islands Situated south of Ao Nang, 8 Kilometers offshore, Koh Poda or Poda Group Islands are fringed by clear waters and offer white sandy beaches, as well as, pristine coral reefs. These islands are not affected so much by the monsoon therefore are year-round attractions and an excellent place for Àshing. Poda island with white sand beaches and clear turquoise seawater abounded with schools of colorful Àsh.

HIGHLIGHT ATTRACTIONS.. Emerald Pool Emerald Pool or Sra Morakot in Thai is located at Klong Thom District. This hot spring originates from a warm stream in the lowland forest. The intensity of the pool’s turquoise colored water varies according to the light and time of the day so a good time to visit is at dawn or early morning.
Bird Watching A trip to Krabi can be a very rewarding visit for any bird lovers. With easily accessible mangroves and low lying forests, there are many places to spot rare birds. Two excellent locations are Khao Kanat Nam, close to Krabi Town, and Khao No Chuchi Forest Preserve.
Tiger Cave Temple Tiger Cave Temple or Wat Tham Sua in Thai is located about 3 kilometers from Krabi town. The inside of this cave features tiger prints captured in stone and is in the middle of an abundant forest with gigantic ancient trees. This place is remarkable archaeologically as many artifacts have been found on the premises including tools, pottery and the mold for the Buddha’s footprint.
Partying Phi Phi is known worldwide as “Party Island central” and Koh Lanta is not far behind. Krabi Town is more sedate, but there are plenty of good bars and a live music scene to enjoy.
HIGHLIGHTS & ACTIVITIES... Rock Climbing Apart from marine sports, Krabi is also an ideal place for rock climbing. Lines of sheer limestone cliffs along Tham Phranang and Rai Le Beaches have challenged thousands of climbers from all over the world every year. The levels of difÀculty of the various routes vary, so Whether you’re a professional or just an aspiring adrenalin junkie, the craggy karsts of Krabi offer a huge array of bolted mounts. Diving Both scuba and snorkeling are widely available in warm, coral and Àsh infested waters with full PADI accreditation courses and live-aboard adventures. GETTING THERE By road from Phuket Take a minibus or frequent local bus from Phuket Town’s bus terminal with information regarding timetables, taxi or mini-van shuttle services readily available at hotels, travel agent or Phuket Airport. Renting a car is also a good option and the roads are wide, modern and relatively quiet. To Krabi and Phi Phi by boat It is possible to charter a speedboat or similar transportation to Krabi or Koh Phi Phi, or there are frequent daily ferries operating between Phuket and Phi Phi Island and then on to Krabi, or via the Koh Yao Islands, each taking about two hours.
