ACTIVITIES OFF THE ISLAND
Phang Nga Bay A visit to Phang Nga Bay on the east side of Phuket is the one big ‘musts’ for visitor to this region. Photos of this bay, with its mystical rock formations towering vertically out of green waters, are almost as well-known as Phuket itself. There are many tour options, with the many tourists taking one of the inexpensive bus-and-boat trips. By far the best way to see the beauty of this bay and avoid mass tourism is to take one of the boat trips that depart from Phuket Island itself.
Game Fishing
James Bond Island This strange but over-rated rock was featured in the James Bond Àlm The Man with the Golden Gun and has never had a quiet day since. The mass of tourists who take the standard bus-and-boat tours to Phang Nga Bay are all deposited on this island where they are besieged by trinket vendors. The day boat tours generally just pass by this islet, giving tourists only the quick glimpse that it deserves, so that they can spend their time amongst the more spectacular parts of the bay. Sea Gypsy Village (Koh Pannyi) This village balancing on stakes out in the bay is also a part of the standard bus-and-boat tour of Phang Nga. At lunch up to 3,000 tourists are all deposited here to eat and shop. Indeed, the village is fascinating, but again it’s best if you can take a boat tour that avoids the midday crowds. And just for the record, there are no ‘Sea Gypsies’ in this misnamed village. The people here are all in fact Muslim Àshermen. Island Getaways Getting to some of the many little resorts on remote islands in this region is not so easy. But for those who succeed, that is half the fun. The other reward is Ànding remote places with few other people. There are bungalow resorts on Phi Phi, Koh Mai Thon (up-market) Koh Racha, Koh Yao Noi, Koh Naka Yai and along the Krabi Coast. Phi Phi Island This pair of islands 40 kilometers southeast of Phuket is justiÀably famous for the spectacular rock walls rising from crystal seas and the stunning scenic beauty of its beaches and coves. Unfortunately, mass tourism has now found these islands, with hundreds of trippers being deposited here every day. But even this cannot destroy the overwhelming beauty of the place, and Phi Phi is still worth a visit. There are many small bungalow resorts here and it is undoubtedly best to stay overnight. The evenings and early mornings are the most beautiful times and are free of the mid-day masses. Krabi Facing Phuket from the east side of Phang Nga Bay this region of soaring rock walls and stunningly beautiful beaches is now famous as a destination in its own right. Those who have time are strongly recommended to make a visit here, either by driving a rented car, or by taking a ferry from Phuket Town pier. The car trip takes one through attractive rural countryside with rice Àelds, rubber and palm oil plantations nestled amongst towering rock cliffs and mountains. The famous portion of Krabi is a peninsula that is entirely isolated by sheer cliffs and can only be reached by boat. www.theguidephuket.com
Koh Panyi
Game Fishing Phuket is not that famous for game Àshing - more due to the lack of modern, fast boats than the number of Àsh. In fact the seas surrounding the island team with a variety of good game Àsh, principally sailÀsh, Wahoo, barracuda, tuna, marlin and bottom Àsh are also common. During the winter months sailÀsh congregate around the islands south of Phuket in such incredible numbers, and jump so regularly, that Àsherman can enjoy an all-day dance and splash show around their boat as these speedsters of the ocean round up schools of bait Àsh. Scuba Diving Serious SCUBA divers everywhere know Phuket as one of the world’s top spots for undersea adventure. The most famous sites are out in the Andaman Sea near the Similan Islands. Here one will see incredible numbers of reef and pelagic Àsh and have a good chance of encountering shark, turtles, rays and whale sharks. Manta rays are common, the coral is exceptionally varied and colorful and the water is incredibly clear, warm and calm. To enjoy this underwater fantasyland one needs join a live-aboard trip, readily available through many operators on Phuket. Sailing The Andaman Sea is fast catching up to such traditional sailing grounds as the Caribbean and Mediterranean with a reputation for excellent cruising and sailing. The winds are good during many months of the year, the anchorages are located in spectacular scenery, the waters are warm and clear and the locals are especially friendly. Asia Marine operates a full Áeet of bare-boat charters here and privately owned yachts are available through the major charter company.
Activities
Longtail and Speedboat Rentals For those who want to enjoy Phang Nga Bay, or some of the many small islands in private style, renting one’s own ‘longtail’ or speedboat for the day is the way to go. Traditional longail boats are available from most beaches. They are always available at Chalong Bay or Rawai Beach where a range of these fun craft is limited. A speedboat can take you on a private tour of Phang Nga Bay with time to spare for swimming, snorkeling and a picnic lunch on a quiet island. Speedboats vary in price and quality, from a WATER TAXI, to cheap craft from local operators off the beach in Chalong and Rawai. Boat Cruising For those who want the ultimate experience in Phang Nga Bay there is only one way take an overnight cruise and enjoy the most beautiful times of day, sunset and early morning, in this sea and mountain wonderland. There are a number of charter boats available with captain, crew, great cooking and fresh seafood from local Àshing craft. Again, a major charter agent like Asia Marine can Ànd the right craft. Self-drive Tours If you want to see Phuket you simply have to rent either a car or motorcycle and drive. The island is large and public transport does not reach many beautiful beaches and places of interest. The Àrst thing to do is drive the west coast road that takes you to all of the major beaches of Phuket. These range from crowded Patong to remotely quiet Nai Thon Beach and a couple of other small, hard-to-Ànd ones without names.
19
Koh Samui The second of Thailand’s tropical resort islands is not far away, yet the atmosphere of Samui, which basks in an entirely different ocean, is low-key and laid-back compared to Phuket. One can drive across the Thai peninsula in four hours, then catch the hourly car ferry to Samui. But the easiest way is via the regular daily Áight with Bangkok Airways just a half an hour’s Áight. This is also a rewarding way to stop off on the way back to Bangkok. Check BKK AIR schedules, which vary with the seasons. Sea Canoeing With reason, this is now one of the most popular day tours out of Phuket. There is no better way to appreciate the inner world of strange geographic formations, plant and animal life of Phang Nga Bay than to be paddled quietly through its caves and lagoons in sea canoes. This is a more satisfying tour of Phang Nga than the junkets to James Bond Island.
Sea Canoeing
Boat Cruising
To see more of the region drive right off Phuket into Phang Nga province or on to Krabi. All routes in these provinces pass through magniÀcent scenery, and accommodation can be found in all directions. Pick up some maps and go. You can ask questions along the way. It’s easier than one might think.

Getting to know
Salisa Limsakul
Managing Director of Andaman Embrace Resort and Spa Please tell us about your own personal background and experience before assuming your current position at Andaman Embrace Resort. I always wanted to travel and see the world and so I felt a career in hospitality could be the key to discovering new countries, new cultures and new people. So I started by attending hotel school at Glion Institute of Higher Education, Switzerland. After my time in Switzerland, I thought why not work in a relaxing vacation-oriented environment so that every day at work I could make someone’s day that little bit better and so I would also absorb some of the same good vibe my hotel guests are enjoying. That is when I spent two years in Florida, working in the Convention Sales & Services Department at Boca Raton Resort & Club - a Waldorf Astoria Resort. But Outrigger Hotels and Resorts, Asia was where I sharpened my Sales and Marketing skills before taking over the old “Club Andaman Beach Resort” and turned it into Andaman Embrace Resort & Spa. What are the main objectives and strategy for building the success of Andaman Embrace Resort and Spa in the future? We need to embrace a new culture in managementemployee relationships. We also share a common goal – “in pursuit of excellence” which means driving higher service levels through more efÀcient systems and processes that best fulÀll the needs of our guests. We also highly value and give maximum effort to achieving the “well-being of our staff, community and environment. Who do you see as your main target groups both now and in the next few years? US and European economics are fragile and that has a direct impact on the tourism industry in Thailand especially Phuket. However the number of Asian tourist is growing much stronger. The launch of direct Áights from Perth, New Delhi and Mumbai is a big help. Even Thomson and First Choice is set to launch the Àrst of their UK Áights to Phuket this November so hopefully things will look better soon for European markets. What positive developments do you see for Phuket and Patong over the next few years? The expansion of the Phuket International Airport as infrastructure and accessibility are often the keys to a destination’s development. But I am secretly hoping for new roads and expansion of the existing roads, or even better, if we get some kind of public transport system in place. www.theguidephuket.com
What future strategic initiatives do you plan to ensure keeping Andaman Embrace Resort ahead of your competitors in Phuket? We’re in the business of change, so as MD, I need to make change happen by embracing, cultivating and leading it in every aspect of our business. In particular, we shall be entirely customer-focused. Whatever changes we preside over should result in happier, better served customers and guests.

The GUIDE to NIGHTLIFE
!
The Nightlife in Phuket is unique and not to be missed. The cauldron of action of action is centered on the Àery beach front on the southwest side in the infamous Patong. Beach area. The nightlife in Patong never fails to attract curious visitors every evening. Like a magnet, all are attracted to Soi Bangla, the heart of the bar scene. The ever enchanting bar girls, neon lights and exaggerated sound systems compete for the attention of all who fail to resist pleasures of Bangla.
THE GUIDE’S HOT PICK OF
RED HOT CLUB
PATONG
SEDUCTION BEACH CLUB
Sexy and stylish are two words you will instantly relate to once you have visited Seduction. It promises big nights out and it delivers regularly. The Àrst Saturday of every month is a “must-attend” for all serious party goers Seduction is the very best Phuket has to offer in terms of quality international DJ’s and high tempo club nights. If you’re looking for the clubbing scene then Seduction is the place to be.
New to the constantly evolving Bangla is the Red Hot Club. Bringing with it a host of quality live music from their very own house band and a welcoming theme and environment that seems to capture the ambience of a Canadian or Austrian wooden chalet, set high in the mountains where drinks are plentiful and good times are rife. The house band of seven includes several individually talented performers and the two ‘front men’ interact with the crowd all night on stage and off stage whilst producing quality vocals. It’s easy for these two to take all of the crowd’s attention. That is until the solo guitarist and the soulful reggae vocalist get their turn to impress the passionate spectators.
Phuket Town boasts a good selection of bars and more relaxed watering holes. With its own character, it offers more authenticity and space when compared to the crowds of Patong and a great night out can be had by all with a little help and a small push in the right direction from The Guide.
THE GUIDE’S HOT PICK OF
PHUKET TOWN
TIMBER HUT
ROM DEE
With two Áoors, each with its own bar and seating areas, you can stand on the balcony and watch the band ignite the crowd, or be captured by the energy on the ground Áoor leaving you with no choice but to dance and have a good time.
ROCKIN’ANGELS
Timber Hut offers arguably one of the best atmospheres in Phuket. Exceptional live music and popular bands play in the center of the venue surrounded by a welcoming crowd all moving to the music.
SANAEHA
The trendiest hangout in Phuket Town, complete with a chic and sophisticated setting, this is the perfect spot to impress a date, or enjoy with a small group of friends. With crisp off an endlessly stylish feel. This fashionable venue features live music several nights a week offering an intimate yet exclusive atmosphere
Rom Dee is a small bar that caters for those wishing to get away from the extravagant music of the larger venues. Located next door to Sanaeha, Rom Dee is a quaint place for drinks and cozy conversation. A popular alternative to the powerful dance clubs and lively bars, Rom Dee suits locals and tourists alike. Not just another live music bar, Rocking Angels brings together musicians of Phuket and from other nations who all wish to Jam and participate. The owner leads by example, happily taking requests and having a huge passion for playing all night long. The main focus of the music normally circles around Blues, Rock and Roll and Roots however don’t be surprised to Ànd that the Blues inÁuence will take over as the night goes on.

LIFE’S With a vast array of different beaches on Phuket’s coastline why stick to just the one nearest your hotel? Take a look here at the choices available. Mai khao Beach North of the airport is a beach to really get away from it all. Mai Khao beach is very, very long, and very straight, so it misses the cozy feeling enjoyed by many of the other beaches on the island, but the sand and water here are just as stunning plus it’s almost empty! The place feels deserted even during high season when the beach umbrellas are Àve deep on Patong.
Surin Beach Surin Beach is located between Bang Tao and Kamala beach. It is one of most beautiful beaches on the island with Àne white sand and emerald sea. The beach can have rather strong winds which make it ideal for windsurÀng. A lot of popular resorts surround this beach. Laem Singh Beach Laem Singh Beach is small and very popular; it is located between Surin and Kamala. To reach the beach you need to walk down a short, rocky trail that is clearly signposted. If you are lucky and it’s not too crowded then Leam Sing Beach is absolutely stunning.
Nai Yang Beach Just south of the airport is Nai Yang, a charming beach with a unique atmosphere all of its own. With just a scattering of hotels and bars to entertain the few that stay there, Nai Yang is as relaxed as they get. Ever dreamed of eating seafood right Kamala Beach on the beach? This is you spot. Kamala is a 3-kilometer long beach Nai Thon Beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west A little further south from Nai Thon, coast. The town here has undergone possessing a similar feel to its big brother, recent developments to its main street, but Nai Thon has long been a favorite with the beach remains largely unchanged. the regular visitors to the island. This quiet Behind the beach lies a growing village regular visitors to the island. This quiet bay with two distinct communities; Buddhists nestled at the foot of high hills has a Àne by the beach and Muslims further back at strip of sand and a handful of pleasant the foot of the encompassing mountain eateries are situated just off the beach. range. Layan Beach This is a small and relatively unknown beach, nestled in a shallow bay at the northern end of Bang Tao. You get there by following the small road that winds right through the back holes of the Banyan Tree Golf Club. Layan Beach is more of a bay than a beach, and although very picturesque the water is quite shallow; great for families but if you fancy a real swim it’s not the place to go Bang Tao Beach Bang Tao Beach has in recent years seen a lot of development with many 5-star luxury resorts in the area but the beach remains very pleasant. At certain times of the year swimming can be dangerous due to the strong tides. At the northern end beach the coral creates good opportunities for snorkeling.
www.theguidephuket.com
Karon Beach Karon is another of the beautiful, west-coast beaches that have made Phuket famous. This beach is the Àrst main stop south of Patong and is separated from Patong by a large headland. Kata Beach Kata is certainly one of the most beautiful of Phuket’s beaches; a half moon crescent of white sand lining a bay cut deep between two green headlands. Crystal clear waters and soft coral offers excellent snorkeling and just outside the bay lies a small rounded island that seems to wave its coconut haircut to those on the beach. Kata Noi Beach Just south of Kata Beach is Kata Noi, a smaller beach with only a few hotels and little other development. The beach is superb for snorkeling as many Àsh inhabit the rocks and corals along the headland to the south.
Ao Sane Beach Ao Sane beach is small bay and is located to the north of Nai Harn beach. To get to this beach you need to go through the car park The Royal Phuket Patong Beach The most famous beach on the island is Yacht Club. Ao Sane is a very small, rocky the center of entertainment, restaurants, beach but it is peaceful and laid-back. shopping and hotels. Patong is indeed a famous beach with beautiful soft Nai Harn Beach sands and warm clear water. But right Nai Harn is one of the more isolated behind the beach is the hustle and beaches, nestled at the southern tip of bustle at the center of Phuket’s tourism the island in a bay deÀned by headlands business. Here the hotels, restaurants, and islets. The beach is backed by the entertainment and bar areas, street green of Casuarina trees and coconut bazaars and shops are crammed in a palms, acting as shade to the restaurants colorful and lively mix that typiÀes a Thai that now line the beach. tourist beach town. The Ultimate Luxury Sunday Brunch at the Banyan Tree
I just spent a memorable Sunday in a gourmet paradise and I cannot wait to return there! The beautiful Banyan Tree has long been famed as the epitome of elegance and style and now you too can enjoy the sheer indulgence of a sumptuous Sunday brunch in their relaxing lakeside setting. Sit back and luxuriate in a real feast of the senses as you discover the freshest seafood (most of it still alive!), perfectly prepared by a small army of chefs and quickly delivered to your table by the smiling waiting staff. Canadian lobster, oysters, Manila clams, tiger prawns, fresh salmon and so much more awaits you and there are even truly delicious ‘Wagyu’ beef steaks too. The restaurant itself is very spacious and spreads over the terraces which border the pristine lake and manicured gardens. The tables are very well spaced, so there are ample walkways to explore the myriad delights which are on offer. While sipping your Àrst glass of perfectly chilled champagne you can contemplate how you will start this gastronomic journey. Should you commence with the superb ‘foie gras’, Áown in fresh from France and served with all the Ànest accompaniments? Or perhaps you would prefer some delicious raw Àsh ‘sashimi’ or the vast array of imported cold cuts of specialty hams and sausages? Or you could go for the cold seafood bar, which has Àsh, lobster, prawns, crab and other delicious choices, freshly cooked

and kept on ice for you to choose from - or why not try them all? A vast selection of crisp garden salads and fresh baked breads is also laid out for you, to accompany all these delights. Time for more champagne as you contemplate how to proceed. Will it be the scrumptious clam and mussel noodles or a fresh pasta dish, both prepared before your eyes and to your speciÀc orders, or are the amazing array of live seafood just too hard to resist? So much to choose from and we tried most of the superb offerings – truly wonderful, especially with all the delicious sauces that are delivered to your table!

So now you are feeling very relaxed and your only decision is whether you revisit some of your favorite items on the magical food train or whether to graduate to the desserts and cheese board. The cakes and pastries are deÀnitely very tempting and the array is beautifully displayed and deÀnitely tastes as good as it looks. There is also a wonderful ‘chocolate fountain’ with a wide array of fruits that you can dip into it and crepes (pancakes) freshly made with your choice of Àllings. And, to round off the perfect meal, you take a few steps into an air-conditioned room where a display of the Ànest imported cheeses will take your breath away. My idea of a perfect, relaxing brunch at one of the Ànest hotels in Phuket – I will return!

Herbal MDgic It would be difÀcult to go home from a holiday in Thailand without being exposed to a variety of Thai herbs, whether they are in your food, your spa treatment or traditional medicine. Herbs have had a slightly questionable reputation in the past, as they are associated with smoking the ‘special’ kind or rubbing foul-smelling concoctions onto sensitive parts of your body. But now more knowledge is coming to light about the use of herbs, their healthy properties and the traditions behind their use. What is the history of herbs? In Thai villages herbs are used as frequently and commonly as shampoo and soap. The traditions behind many of their uses are fascinating. Thai herbs were Àrst cultivated in the temple, and some people believe that Thai herbal remedies and techniques were Àrst used to soothe the aches and pains of experienced monks after hours sitting in a meditative pose. A healing session would often begin with an offering, consisting of Áowers, candles and small amounts of money, and then the illness would be discussed and diagnosed, and a remedy prescribed. In more recent times, special herbal poultices have once again become the subject of research, and more than two hundred Thai herbs have now been identiÀed as having their own particular healing properties. So next time you dig into a delicious Thai meal, or have that sweet-smelling spa treatment, stop and ask which herbs are being used and why. The reasons behind their use are often not only interesting in their own right but an insight into a fascinating part of Thai culture. How are Thai herbs commonly used? Herbs such as lemongrass, ginger and tamarind are often used in Thai cooking. They add Áavour and spice and no Thai dish would be complete without them. KafÀr lime for example is added to Thai salads, or torn and added to
soups and curries. Most herbs are used in a number of different dishes and are combined with each other in various ways. Your Tom Yam Goong wouldn’t be complete without the fresh galangal and lemongrass which gives this soup its distinctive taste. Coconut oil and papaya are often incorporated into skin treatments. All around the island, spa resorts offer their own mixes of Thai herbs in massage oils, which help relieve stiff joints and provide soothing and cooling properties for sun burnt skin. Herbs are also used in most local medicines. Even though herbal remedies take longer to act, they generally treat the cause as well as the symptoms of an injury or disease, and therefore provide longer term relief from pain and discomfort, rather than simply hiding symptoms temporarily. The most popular way to administer herbal ingredients is by boiling them in water to make a tea, mixing them with alcohol as a tonic, grinding them into a powder, making them into tablets, or just squeezing the plants to extract the juice. The application of herbal compresses has also been used as a therapeutic tool by Thai healers for many years. A bolus is made by tightly wrapping a mixture of beneÀcial herbs in bundles of muslin, which are then steam-heated and applied to various pressure points along the body’s main energy lines.
What do they do exactly? Lemongrass (Takrai) This is an aromatic herb used in curry pastes, stir-fries, and soups. The therapeutic properties of lemongrass are varied, and it is used as a diuretic, for anti-Áatulence, and even anti-Áu, as well as being a powerful antimicrobial agent. The plant is well known for its pleasant aroma, for its antiseptic properties, and as a cure for headaches and skin complaints.
Ginger (Khing) Ginger is used in different forms as a food, Áavouring, and spice. Its therapeutic uses are as a digestive aid, an antinauseant, and an antiÁatulence agent. Traditionally, Thai mothers rubbed a paste of ginger onto a baby’s stomach to relieve stomach upsets and gas. In aromatherapy the oil is used to boost circulation and relax stiff muscles.

Tamarind (Makham) Tamarind is the fruit of a tall tree native to Asia that is also widely grown in India. The bark is used as an astringent, the Áowers reduce blood pressure, and the fruit can have a laxative effect. In addition, the leaves are used in herbal steams as the acidity helps the skin absorb other herbal ingredients. Wet tamarind was also once used as a beauty treatment, and is a natural exfoliate.
Galangal (Kha) A relative of ginger, but pink in colour, galangal has a distinct peppery Áavour. It can be eaten either raw or cooked, and has therapeutic uses as a stomach settler, anti-rheumatic, and antimicrobial agent.
KafÀr Lime (Makrut) The leaves, peel, and juice of the KafÀr Lime are all commonly used for Áavouring Thai cuisine, imparting a unique Áavour. The zest is a popular ingredient in herbal compresses, while the oil is used as aromatherapy, and the fresh fruit is sometimes applied as a hair tonic.
Turmeric (Kamin) These small, bright orange roots are used in yellow curries and can also be used as a food dye. Turmeric is a major ingredient in many Thai herbal remedies, and its therapeutic properties provide a cure for digestive disorders. In addition to this, it is sometimes used in traditional cosmetics, and when crushed, the oil can be applied as a natural moisturizer.

Enjoy a real 5-Star Service! Just a short walk from Jungceylon and opposite the Holiday Inn in Patong are probably the best ‘value for money’ body treatments available on Phuket Island, at the stylish 5-Star Massage and Beauty Salon.
Under French management by the lovely Isabelle the salon operates to very high standards and uses only the best quality natural Thai oils and lotions. A whole range of massage therapies are on offer as well as hair and facial treatments, manicures and pedicures. It is Isabelle’s strict policy not to offer a service until she is completely sure that her product is the best on the market and her staff is well-trained and proÀcient in the procedure.
clinics and holistic centers around the world. Ear candling requires the use of special candles, which are made of cotton or linen that is wound into a candle shape, soaked in wax, and then allowed to harden. It is a method of removing excess ear wax and debris and it really is completely safe and painless. Whilst you lie on your side the hollow candle is placed into the external ear canal and the candle is lit at the opposite end.
It was great to see then that three new treatments have been added to the extensive salon menu and we recently took the opportunity to check out these new offers.
Warm air and smoke from the burning candle dries out the ear canal and stimulates the body’s natural excretion of wax and dead cells, pollen, mold, parasites and other debris. After the procedure, a dark, waxy substance is usually left in the hollow candle, which is a combination of the unwanted ear wax and debris, but the Ànal result is that your ears are squeaky clean!
The Àrst treatment we tried was the ear candling and it was indeed a surprisingly pleasant experience. Ear Candling is an ancient healing method, originating in Egypt around 2,500 BC and still widely used today at alternative medicine

Next on our ‘to do’ list was a slimming treatment that employs a full body, Lymphatic Drainage Massage to achieve its ends. This is a highly specialized therapy using organic oils blended with essential oils. It aids detoxiÀcation and reduces water retention using unique gentle pumping techniques to drain trapped toxins through the body’s lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a complex network of vessels and ducts that move Áuid throughout the body and is responsible for moving toxins away from healthy cells and carrying germ-Àghting materials to cells when they are under attack by viruses. Though Áuid moves through the lymphatic system, it does not have its own pumping mechanism. Lymphatic drainage is a type of therapy that primarily focuses on speciÀc lymph nodes and points of the body and is intended to reduce blockages of the lymphatic system, which in turn promotes a healthier body. It is a really relaxing way to get healthy and a perfect way to spend an hour as often as you can.

Last on our list of new treatments was the Sports or Deep Tissue Massage. Developed only in recent years, the sport massage is speciÀcally designed for people who are involved in physical activity. But you don’t have to be a professional athlete to have one! It’s also used by people who are active and workout often, or by non-sports people like me who have taken a non-sports tumble. The focus isn’t on relaxation but on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance. This massage is slow and thorough and the therapist begins with superÀcial strokes to identify any problem areas and detect overused muscles. These muscles are hard and tense compared to the surrounding tissues and this massage helps to relieve any swelling and drain away exhaustion from the body. When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments and these adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inÁammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles. It focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue and is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness and sore shoulders. This is not for the faint hearted though as the massage pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain, however the great news is that you will notice an improved range of motion immediately after the massage.
All-in-all three very good reasons to get over to the tender ministrations of Isabelle and her expert therapists for a complete body ‘tune up’. You just know it makes sense! The 5 Star salon itself has been totally renewed with a mix of teak wood décor plus still pastel colors for a more elegant and comfortable customer experience. And of course it is still great value for money! 5star Massage & Beauty Salon 225 Rat U Thit 200 Pee Road (Opposite Holiday Inn Patong) Tel.0895354637 Isabelle

Bangkok Airways Redefining “Boutique”
Asia’s premier small airline won its awards for good reason. Bangkok Airways criss-crosses the Asian region carrying both leisure and business travellers in a style that bigger companies simply cannot achieve. The ultimate Áying experience across Asia in this boutique airline comes with a Áeet of modern craft, beautiful airports and private lounges, exceptional in-Áight meals and the kind of personalized onboard service that corporate airlines lost long ago. When it is time to take to the sky, “Fly Boutique, Feel Unique”. Within Thailand Bangkok Airways links nine important destinations: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Lampang, Pattaya, Phuket, Samui, Sukhothai and Trat. Internationally its wings are seen in the skies of 9 countires as it serves 11 destinations: Phnom Penh & Siem Reap, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Vientiane & Luang Prabang, Maldives, Mumbai, Dhaka and Yangon.

ASIA’S BOUTIQUE AIRLINE The choice to reÀne and deÀne the airline as ‘Asia’s Boutique Airline,’ was taken back in 2004, when the airline industry was in turmoil and other carriers could not deÀne themselves. Bangkok Airways move looked extraordinary at the time. It redesigned it airport lounges, employed daring but smart airport architecture, pushed up customer service from check-in to arrival and, at a time when other airlines were trimming in-Áight meals, make a major upgrade in the kitchen. Most critical, Bangkok Airways then booked a small but modern Áeet of new aircraft to ensure the highest standards in operations and safety. And through it all it did not forget its customers, and kept up its stylish, boutique spirit to maintain its reputation as the region’s trendiest airline. The Thai smile stayed with this airline.

BOUTIQUE LOUNGES Bangkok Airways’ emphasis on comfortable boutique waiting lounges was to solve a down-to-earth problem that punishes the entire airline industry. Waiting in airports can be the bane of all travellers, especially when airlines have neither lounges nor facilities. Bangkok Airways’ Àx was radical, but welcomed by passengers. At all airports it uses Bangkok Airways established its own private lounges. Again, these are plush, comfortable, and the equal of many other airlines’ Business Class lounges. But more importantly, these free and open to everyone carrying their boarding pass. Here passengers can check e-mail or surf the web. Good, relevant reading materials are supplied. Hot and cold drinks are on offer, and even more, a Àne range of hot and cold snacks. Children are also catered for with a kid’s corner in each. BOUTIQUE AIRPORTS It may be unusual in this industry, but Bangkok Airways’ owns and operates three boutique airports. The Àrst of these is the famous Samui Airport that opened in 1989 and led the tourism boom that has seen that island skyrocket into one of the world’s leading beachfront destinations. Then came Sukhothai, near the cultural heart of Thailand. Trat followed, and helped nearby Kon Chang climb in international recognition. All three airports feature unique architecture that some would call radical – all designed to blend in with the natural and cultural surroundings.

APPETIZING MENUS In an era when most airlines are cutting back, and in-Áight meals have dried up, Bangkok Airways has made the opposing moved to provide every passenger with a really sumptuous and tasty on-board meal. On even the shortest Áights they provide tasty snacks and drinks. This emphasis also takes account of food hygiene. These excellent meals follow on, of course, from the hot snack in the Bangkok Airways’ private departure lounge – so no-one need leave a Bangkok Airways Áight hungry. EXCLUSIVE SERVICE Bangkok Airways kicks the trend towards no-frills travel, where passengers are mere numbers to shufÁe about. The resort is unreal with beautiful views with boats sailing past in the distance. The rooms were absolutely amazing. The staff was all super-friendly especially the manager who was very helpful and nothing seemed to trouble her. The food was also spot on and eating it on our balcony by our private pool was perfect. If you’re thinking of having your wedding here, don’t hesitate. Our wedding was more amazing than I could have imagined. Everything down to the Ànest detail was perfect. We had 46 guests and there was plenty of room. Everyone raved about the food for days. I know we’ll come back to Impiana Private Villas in the future for sure.” Event Contact Supanit Panyasakchai Assistant Villas Manager Impiana Private Villas, Kata Noi Tel: +66 (0) 7633 0770 Email: foipv@impiana.com www.impiana.com

Recharge at the Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort
Many people living or visiting Phuket Ànd it an increasingly stressful and tiring place to be. TrafÀc, crowds and fast-paced living take their toll on even the most resilient, and often a haven of peace, quiet and regeneration is sought to re-charge their batteries. There is an extremely beguiling place to do just this in the beautiful shape of the 276-roomed SoÀtel Krabi Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort, an ideal location to chill out and rebuild body and soul. The resort is located just north of Krabi near Ao Nang, only 1 hour and 40 minutes drive from the Sarasin Bridge in Phuket, or you can simply jump on a boat across Phang Nga Bay and land on the beach right in front of this beautiful sanctuary. As soon as you enter the huge grounds of the SoÀtel Krabi Phokeethra you know you are in another saner, relaxing and frankly sybaritic world. On your left www.theguidephuket.com
you’ll see the lush green rolling fairways and greens of the resort’s nine hole international-standard golf course and then you’ll sweep up to the majestic grandeur of the huge lobby with its gamelan music, vaulting ceilings, wide open airiness and elegant colonial decorative Áourishes. You quickly realize that someone has taken a lot of time and effort to create a masterpiece that combines French colonial sophistication woven harmoniously into the sumptuous natural environment of this dramatic corner of Thailand. Mention must be made of the amazing 7,000 sq.m. swimming pool, the largest in Thailand, which runs through the heart of the wondrous landscaped grounds of the SoÀtel Krabi Phokeethra. With its poolside bar/restaurant, aqua-aerobics and water volley ball games it is a vital heart of the resort and a perfect exemplar of what the SoÀtel Krabi Phokeethra is all about.

One can be as active or as laid-back as you wish here and either way the days seem to drift happily by. Your correspondent threw himself into archery, aqua-aerobics, lap swimming, cycling and several sessions in So SPA with L’Occitane and felt a new man after such exertions. However, evening cocktails in the lovely wood-paneled Explorer Bar followed by a glorious supper of home-made lasagna on the outdoor terrace of Ristorante Venezia under a rising moon dispelled any thoughts of taking it easy the next day! SoÀtel Krabi Phokeethra eloquently sums up their hedonistic appeal through the slogan “La Vie est MagniÀque or Life is MagniÀcent” and it is a thematic that is sincerely played out through every aspect of this charming resort. From the rooms and suites to the restaurants and bars, to the So SPA with L’Occitane, to the endless array of sports and activities for adults and kiddies, to the grounds and landscaping, to the glorious beachfront and the views across the dreaming karst topography of Phang Nga Bay….frankly the SoÀtel Krabi Phokeethra have created a dream escape that cannot be bettered. Andaman
GETTING TO KNOW the Southern Andaman Region of Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta
as it could actually be classiÀed as a mud Áat, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumping activity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high difÀcult rating. Pra Nang Beach Connected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local Àshermen leave offerings for good fortune. Three hours drive south from Phuket through stunning limestone cliffs and dense forest brings you to the southern playground of the Krabi region of the Andaman overlooking Phang Nga Bay with its many scattered islands, hidden bays and beaches. Throw away your watch and bask in nature’s beauty or snorkel, dive, rock climb, Àsh, kayak, hike, sail, party, spa or wine and dine to your heart’s content – this region has it all. Ao Nang Beach Just 18 km from Krabi Town is beautiful Ao Nang with its 83 scattered islands. Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and majestic limestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beaches including East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range. Noppharat Thara Beach Just 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined with majestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides. Railay Beach This beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. West Railey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang.
