t e k u h P The Pearl of the Andaman
What comes into the mind of travelers when they start to think about sea, sun and sand? Phuket is increasingly one of the answers to this…. and for good reason as the island offers warm tropical ocean, beautiful beaches, stunning scenery and a multitude of opportunities for exciting and fun activities. Thailand’s largest island, Phuket, is located 862 kilometers south of Bangkok. Often called the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’, or ‘Pearl of the South’, its natural resources; rocky peninsulas, limestone cliffs, white powdery beaches, tranquil broad bays and tropical in-land forests contribute to making it southern Thailand’s wealthiest, busiest, most visited and most popular island and province. Nestled in the tropical zone off the west coast of southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean, the province covers an area of approximately 543 square kilometers (excluding small islets). It is estimated that Phuket Province covers an area of approximately 590 square kilometers if its 39 other small islands are included. The island’s total length, from north to south, is estimated at 48.7 kilometers and it is approximately 21.3 kilometers wide. Phuket borders with Phang-Nga province to the north; connected by the Sarasin Bridge. The remainder of the island is encircled by the Andaman Sea; an area which is home to many of the best diving sites in the country. Staying on the island is easy, as there are only two seasons in the year - the rainy season (May to October) and the hot season (November to April). The low season of Phuket is between September and October as these are the wettest months. The best period for a visit, is from November to February, when it is possible to see the clear blue sky, feel the fresh sea breezes and marvel at the crystal clear waters while lying on powdery, palm-fringed beaches. Average temperatures ranges between 23°C and 33°C. www.theguidephuket.com
Phuket’s topology is exceptional with 70 percent of its area covered with mountains which stretch from north to south and the remaining 30 percent being plains located in the central and eastern parts of the island. The island does not have any ma jor rivers, but has nine smaller brooks and creeks. Phuket has a lot more to offer than just its natural beauty. Sino-Portuguese architecture casts its spell delighting travelers to Phuket Town, while Phuket-style hospitality never fails to impress visitors from all walks of life. In addition, accommodation ranging from world-class resorts to tropicalstyle bungalows caters to the different needs of travelers. For seafood lovers, there is so much choice including Phuket’s famous lobster. Altogether, these characteristics make Phuket a truly unique destination.

s e i t i v i t c A on the Island It’s a big island, offering all manner of things to do. It’s surprising that so many holiday makers, who are trying to get away from it all, soon get bored with that dreamy combination of a perfect beach, a comfortable hotel room and great food. After a few days, most people want more. They want to go places, to see how the local people live and to experience new things. Happily with Phuket being a large island, about 50 kilometers long, there are all sorts of interesting things to do here. Below we offer some suggestion. • Crowned Beach, Quiet Beach Find the one that suits you spend most of your holiday in Patong and you might think the beaches of Phuket are crowned. While Patong buzzes with people and activity, there are many other beaches to which one can escape in complete solitude. You just have to drive. As one moves away from patong the beaches become progressively quieter. By the time you get to the top of the island you’re guaranteed kilometers of sand to yourself, even in peak season, so remember crowned beach, quiet beach; the choice is there. • Visiting Wats – Buddhist Monasteries All Buddhist Monasteries are open to the public during the day, and visitors are usually welcome. Since these are active holy places of worship, and the residence of monks, visitors should show respecting keeping well dressed and remaining quiet, Mum and Dad; keep the kids on a leash and always be culturally sensitive. • Elephant Trekking The wild elephant population of Phuket was wiped out last century, but has been replaced in recent years by and influx of animals for the tourist trade. Today there remains just a few hundred elephants on Phuket Island, all domesticated, most working in tourism. Indeed, riding an elephant is an experience not to be missed. The lumbering monsters are incredibly agile. Taking an elephant ride helps to keep the beasts employed, fed and out of the cities, where many can be taken by destitute owners in search of money and food. • Phuket Town Phuket Town is small but incredibly interesting, a potpourri of different cultural influences of markets and shopping centers, restaurants and other entertainment facilities. Anyone spending a few days on Phuket Island should take time to visit, be it for sight-seeing, cultural or historical interest or shopping. • Zoo Phuket’s only zoo is small, but pleasant, displaying some of Thailand’s almost vanished wildlife. Their tigers are fed well enough that one can sit with them and have a photo taken. We recommend going early or late, to avoid the tour buses that arrive mid morning and mid afternoon. It is in a small road off the east side of Chao Fah East Road, about half way between the town and Chalong’s 5-way intersection. The turnoff is well signposted and easy to find. www.theguidephuket.com
• Cultural Village Cultural shows featuring skilled Thai dancers from the different regions of the country, martial arts demonstrations, elephant rides and Thai dinners are all brought together at Phuket’s original cultural garden; there is also attached orchid farm for all the budding botanists out there. • Bungy Jump Consider yourself adventurous? Got real guts? If you haven’t tried bungee jump yet, you should take the ride to the top with a big rubber band around your ankles and fight the internal struggle that every jumper meets when standing 54 meters above the ground. Logic might tell us it is quite safe, but another part of our body screams “No! Don’t jump!” But with their friends at the bottom, waiting expectantly, most people manage to throw themselves off and experience a rush like no other. • Jungle Trekking With most of rainforest on Phuket long since eaten up by rubber plantations, it is not easy to find ideal trekking grounds. Again, it’s best to sign on with company providing this service. Often they take their trekkers right off Phuket into neighbouring Phang Nga province, where some beautiful areas of forest remain. • Spas Massage and herbal steam rooms Health resorts, spas and herbal saunas are proliferating, and some fine example offering a wide range of treatments are now found on Phuket. Thailand has its own traditional herbal saunas, and there are several local ones around the island. While many large and resorts now feel they are incomplete without a spa, there are also several independent establishments. • View Points Phuklet’s most famous view point, Laem Phrom Thep at the very bottom of the island, is on the ‘must see’ list for every Thai visitor to the island. Thus it attracts a fleet of tour busses and car each evening as people come to witness the sun fall into the Andaman Sea. Indeed, it’s often a spectacular sight, but there are many quieter places. The view point on the hill behind Kata Noi attracts fewer people and when the heavens turn red, the view from any of the beaches can also be spectacular.

Thousands crowded the launch of
“Laguna Market on First” Sunday, 1st February saw the launch of Laguna Phuket’s new community initiative, “Laguna Market on First”, organized to give local vendors another space to sell their wide variety of wares. I was dubious as to what the turn out for the event would be due to the fact it was held at a location away from some of the popular expat areas, but was pleasantly surprised that over 4,000 community members – a great mix of local Thai, expat, tourists, and hotel guests - came together to enjoy the true taste of Phuket. Even more so that more than 200 vendors had turned out to offer such a fantastic range of goods. They normally say that the first of events such as these are usually the best, but I’m sure that if Laguna Phuket can keep to the standard of this first edition then the future editions will be equally successful. Obviously there will not be the opening ceremony, but to ensure it continues to be a success then they will have to meet the standard of the performances by The Voice Thailand’s Coach and Judge “Jennifer Kim” and last year’s winner “Noom The Voice.” The performances obviously weren’t everyone’s ‘cup of tea, but the ma jority of attendees certainly enjoyed them. No more so than the Thai women in attendance who rushed to the front of the stage, and as usual were quick to get out their smart phones and take some snaps of these popular and well known celebs.
www.theguidephuket.com
But for me, the most surprising thing was how reasonably priced everything was. I was expecting to pay top prices, especially when it came to food and beverages. But it was great to go to an event where prices were set to suit everyone’s pocket. Hats off to Laguna for that! However, it wasn’t only me that was happy with the event, Laguna Phuket’s Managing Director; Mr. Ravi Chandran also had some positive things to say “I am delighted to see that the market attracted both the local communities and tourists. “About 30% of guests were foreigners from the local expat community as well as tourists and hotel guests. This is what made the Market a success in terms of being a platform for us to continue helping and supporting local villagers with their livelihoods and simultaneously showcasing the true taste of Phuket,” he said. The next installment of “Laguna Market on First” will once again be held at Laguna Grove, with the date set for Sunday March 1st. Highlight performance this time is mini concerts by Koh Mr. Saxman and Pui Duangpon (Pui The Voice) The event will run from 5pm to 9pm, and once again vendors will be selling their fantastic range of food and drinks, clothing and fashion items, home décor, arts and crafts, pets, plants, services, and so much more. We hope to see you there. For more information, please visit www.lagunaphuket.com

A Paradise for Birds and Bird Lovers Phuket is blessed with a wonderful bird park and gardens known as Phuket Bird Paradise located on the right-hand side about a kilometer along the Big Buddha Road from the turning off the main Chao Fah West Road. Phuket Bird Paradise occupies a verdant plot of hilly land filled with an abundance of exotic flora, through which the winding paths take you past a broad array of many of our feathered friends. There are an abundance of brightly colored parrots, parakeets and lorikeets with their dramatically lambent red, green and yellow plumage, as well as a personal favorite having lived in Australia, sulfur-crested cockatoos. A first stop for all of Bird Paradise’s visitors is to have their picture taken while covered in a throng of birds, which the handlers place all over you…. even perched nonchalantly upon your head. The bird handlers are very efficient and seem to be able to command their avian charges to do their bidding no matter what, but the secret is the supply of sunflower seeds that the handlers keep feeding the birds to reinforce their good behavior!
Nowhere is this more evident than at the “must-see” Bird Show which Bird Paradise runs in their auditorium. This features absolutely amazing feats of bird training and tricks which will both entertain you and leave you scratching your head as to how the birds actually do such feats of apparent magic. You are invited up onto the stage to interact with the birds, which children and adults alike thoroughly enjoy. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with the park’s famous bird trainer, a friendly lady who has worked with avians for many years around Thailand. She told me that it takes about eight months of daily training to teach a new bird the new tricks in the show and that the brightly colored South American parrots are her star pupils. Bird Paradise is a terrific venue for families and for children of course, who can spend much happy time browsing around the many cages looking at the birds, and then stopping at the café to refresh with cool drinks before carrying on with their adventure. Phuket itself is often referred to as a “Paradise Island”, and the huge number of annual visitors and many residents who call it home would readily agree with this description. Certainly, the island is blessed with tropical climes and lush, abundant trees and vegetation that makes it a paradise not only for humans, but for our feathered friends who are a hugely important part of the island’s attractive environment. I left Phuket Bird Paradise with a spring in my step having been thoroughly entertained and charmed by the birds, the lovely environment and the friendliness of the staff. It’s a wonderful excursion for all, especially families and kiddies who will have an unforgettable time. Life’s a Beach With a vast array of different beaches on Phuket’s coastline why stick to just the one nearest your hotel? Take a look here at the choices available. · Bang Tao Beach Bang Tao Beach has in recent years seen a lot of development with many 5-star luxury resorts in the area but the beach remains very pleasant. At certain times of the year swimming can be dangerous due to the strong currents. At the northern end of the beach the coral creates good opportunities for snorkeling.
· Surin Beach Surin Beach is located between Bang Tao and Kamala beach. It is one of most beautiful beaches on the island with fine white sand and emerald sea. The beach can have rather strong winds which make it ideal for windsurfing. A lot of popular resorts surround this beach.
Surin Beach
· Laem Singh Beach Laem Singh Beach is small and very popular; it is located between Surin and Kamala. To reach the beach you need to walk down a short, rocky trail that is clearly signposted. If you are lucky and it’s not too crowded then Leam Sing Beach is absolutely stunning.
· Kamala Beach h Patong Beac
Nai Yang Be
ach
· Mai Khao Beach North of the airport is a beach to really get away from it all. Mai Khao beach is very, very long, and very straight, so it misses the cozy feeling enjoyed by many of the other beaches on the island, but the sand and water here are just as stunning plus it’s almost empty! The place feels deserted even during high season when the beach umbrellas are five deep on Patong.
· Nai Yang Beach Just south of the airport is Nai Yang, a charming beach with a unique atmosphere all of its own. With just a scattering of hotels and bars to entertain the few that stay there, Nai Yang is as relaxed as they get. Ever dreamed of eating seafood right on the beach? This is your spot.
· Nai Thon Beach A little further south from Nai Yang is Nai Thon, possessing a similar feel to its big brother, Nai Thon has long been a favorite with the regular visitors to the island. This quiet bay nestled at the foot of high hills has a fine strip of sand and a handful of pleasant eateries are situated just off the beach.
· Layan Beach This is a small and relatively unknown beach, nestled in a shallow bay at the northern end of Bang Tao. You get there by following the small road that winds right through the back holes of the Banyan Tree Golf Club. Layan Beach is more of a bay than a beach, and although very picturesque the water is quite shallow; great for families but if you fancy a real swim it’s not the place to go.
Kamala is a 3-kilometer long beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast which has undergone recent developments to its main street, but the beach remains largely unchanged. Behind the beach lies a growing village with two distinct communities; Buddhists by the beach and Muslims further back at the foot of the encompassing mountain range.
· Patong Beach The most famous beach on the island is the center of entertainment, restaurants, shopping and hotels. Patong is indeed a famous beach with beautiful soft sands and warm clear water. But right behind the beach is the hustle and bustle at the center of Phuket’s tourism business. Here the hotels, restaurants, entertainment and bar areas, street bazaars and shops are crammed in a colorful and lively mix that typifies a Thai tourist beach town.
· Paradise Beach Paradise Beach is a little beach just 5 minutes south of Patong. To get there follow a small cement road up to the hill through the jungle. It is a nice small beach with white, soft sand and large rocks flanking either side.
south of Patong, and is separated from Patong by a large headland. A quick 10 minute drive connects the two.
Kata Noi Beach

· Kata Beach Kata is certainly one of the most beautiful of Phuket’s beaches; a half-moon crescent of white sand lining a bay cut deep between two green headlands. Crystal clear waters and soft coral offers excellent snorkeling and just outside the bay lies a small rounded island that seems to wave its coconut haircut to those on the beach.
· Kata Noi Beach Just south of Kata Beach is Kata Noi, a smaller beach with only a few hotels and little other development. The beach is superb for snorkeling as many fish inhabit the rocks and corals along the headland to the south.

· Ao Sane Beach Ao Sane beach is a small bay and is located to the north of Nai Harn beach. To get to this beach you need to go through The Royal Phuket Yacht Club. Ao Sane is a very small, rocky beach but it is peaceful.
· Nai Harn Beach Nai Harn is one of the more isolated beaches, nestled at the southern tip of the island in a bay defined by headlands and islets. The beach is backed by the green of Casuarina trees and coconut palms, acting as shade for the restaurants that now line the beach.
· Ao Yon Beach Ao Yon is another peaceful beach ideally suited for watching
the sunset. It is located near Cape Panwa, 10km from Phuket Town. Although quiet with beautiful emerald sea this beach is not really suitable for bathing or relaxing as the bay is usually full of boats and yachts.
GETTING TO KNOW...
Richard Mehr General Manager of U Zenmaya Phuket Swiss Hotelier, Richard Mehr is no stranger to Phuket. Once upon a time, wine guru extraordinaire at The Boathouse Wine & Grill in the early 90’s, Mehr has shaped his career by managing some very luxurious properties around South East Asia. Today he is back in Phuket at the helm of a beautiful boutique Resort – U Zenmaya on Kalim Bay, Phuket. What aspects of your previous experience and training are critical to your role as General Manager of U Zenmaya boutique resort? Having worked for a number of years in the luxury end of the market, when people stay at a property such as U Zenmaya there are certain high expectations to be met. My experience has led me to meet or hopefully exceed those expectations on every occasion, and when problems occur, as they inevitably do in any form of business, to provide a resolution that satisfies the guest completely. How would you describe your management style? I subscribe to the view that a hotel or resort is only as good as the people it employs, no matter the facilities and services it may provide. I try to be an inspiration to my team by leading by example and being fully hands-on in all areas of operation. I’m a very visible GM; I’m constantly “patrolling” U Zenmaya enquiring as to our guests’ well-being, and our guests can speak to me at any time about any matter, same applies with my team members. I think it gives a personal touch for which U hotels and resorts are renowned. Please tell us about some of the unique and differentiating features of U Zenmaya Phuket. As part of the U chain of international hotels and resorts we have a number of “touches” unique to U properties. Our 24 hour room means guests can check-out at the same time of day as they checked in, giving you a full 24 hours to enjoy U Zenmaya. We also offer breakfast at any time of day and anywhere within the resort. Breakfast by the pool at 3 p.m? No problem. Guests can also select their own personal choice of soaps, pillows, in-room music etc. with our “U Choose” program. www.theguidephuket.com
Which specific audiences and tourism sectors are your key targets? Due to our stunning location, with one of the most jaw-dropping sunsets over the ocean I’ve ever witnessed, and our dedication to guest service and a perfect stay, we aim towards people such as honeymooners and people who just want to experience the ultimate in relaxation away from all the hustle and bustle of some areas of Phuket. However, as a U property, everybody is welcome to come and enjoy a true U experience. What future developments for both U Hotels and Resorts and for Phuket as a whole, are key to your success? Like every other company, we are looking into expanding the U brand but remain conscious that Phuket is a saturated market. We are looking at the big picture and we are focusing now on increasing our portfolio in new upcoming destinations. We have U properties in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, India and we’re about to open a property in Bhutan as well as new projects coming to light in Laos, the Middle-East, Turkey and some European countries… The future lies ahead of us and we strongly believe that the U Hotels & Resorts concept will continue to grow successfully. Capannina Restaurante and Pizzeria in Kata New Location, Same Fabulous Food Capannina was established some 14 years ago and has become one of Phuket’s finest Italian restaurants, and indeed has ascended to the status of a Phuket icon, both for the celebrity of its Chef and owner Mario Eleonori and for its peerless cuisine, comprehensive wine cellar, friendly atmosphere and highly acceptable pricing.
www.theguidephuket.com
Capannina was founded in 2001 in the heart of Kata at the end of a traffic-free walking soi based on Mario’s vision of creating a “little corner of Italy” with the flavors of typical Italian cuisine in a warm and informal atmosphere. Just over a year ago, Mario moved his wonderful house of gastronomy further north along Beach Road Kata and also opened his own hotel the Capannina Inn, in which the restaurant is now housed. Mario says, “Our goal is to cook daily fresh ingredients imported from Italy. So don’t be surprised to find prosciutto di Parma aged 14 months or Parmigiano Reggiano aged for 36. We serve fresh home-made pasta made with flour imported from Italy, such as ravioli stuffed with spinach and ricotta, Tortelloni, potato Gnocchi, or Tagliatelle. Into every dish we dedicate time and passion in order to serve food that lives up to the finest Italian traditions.” When you visit the new location, you’ll realize that a great many of the island’s savvy ex-pats and tourists have followed Mario over there and regularly patronize Capannina simply because it delivers the goods and at decent prices.

Restaurante and Pizzeria
The restaurant’s pizzas are famous all over Phuket for their size. We ordered a Capannina pizza, with a topping of Parma ham, fresh tomatoes, rocket salad and parmesan and it was bulky enough for four people, yet this was not even the large version! Again, the rocket salad was more than generous, as was the buffalo mozzarella and tomato. All the wines are selected personally without being influenced by fashion or trends, with the objective of serving the produce of the best Italian wineries at reasonable prices. There’s a choice of over 45 labels from all regions of Ital y to satisfy even the most demanding palette. If you choose to buy the house wine by the glass you’ll be surprised by the generous portions, and all the wine is stored in a climate controlled glass-fronted ‘cellar’. Pizza is Mario’s first and ultimate passion, and of course his oven is wood-fired, and he even designed and built it himself. He offers a choice of more than 30 different pizzas and unforgettable “Calzoni”. Here, the traditional versions are interpreted at the highest level as in the Pizza Capannina with Parma ham, flakes of parmesan cheese, cherry tomatoes and rucola. Or try the fried calzone, or the pizza with bacon and taleggio. Even when the rest of Kata is quiet, Capannina is always buzzing, so it’s absolutely worth tracking down the REAL Capannina, and don’t settle for second best copycat restaurants nearby!! The appetizers were served in the Iniala Gallery, anchovies mille feuilles presented in a basket paired with a 2013 Trittenheimer APOTHEKE Riesling Kabinett, Rheinessen, Germany- fruity with a slight acidity. This wine was from, Weingut Ansgar Clüsserath, Eva Clüsserath-Wittmann Philipp’s wife who is also a winemaker in another famous wine region from Mosel in Germany
The table was beautifully set and the first course was “Truffled Egg” which is egg york filled with hot truffle sauce and a sliced truffle on top served beautifully on the chic silver spoon which went well with wine 2013 Gutswein Scheurebe QBA Trocken, Wittmann, Rheinhessen. Next, ‘The Garden‘ the colourful mixed vegetables that were beautifully plated as the miniature garden was paired with a 2013 Gutswein Scheurebe QbA Trocken, Wittmann, Rheinhessen, Germany ‘Foie gras ashes’ was one of the signature dishes from 3 Michelin Star Chef “Eneko Atxa” To make it more interesting experience, this course was accompanied with a 2013 Gutsriesling QbA Trocken, Wittmann, Rheinhessen, which is a dry wine; and 2013 Trittenheimer APOTHEKE Riesling Kabinett, Rheinessen, which was more sweet and aromatic. This gives a different experience indeed on how the wines can give different approach to the food. Japanese Kanpachi fish and red pepper tartar paired perfectly with a 2013 Grüner Silvaner QBA Trocken, Wittmann, Rheinessen. Whilst a delicious duo of half cooked tuna and tartar was washed down with two vintage 2010 & 2013 Westhofener Riesling Trocken, Wittmann, Rheinhessen, such fruity flavours. www.theguidephuket.com

Then, a delicious orange duck with foie gras was served with a 2012 Spätburgunder Pinot Noir, Wittmann, Rheinhessen. And last, but by no means least, a raspberry sorbet with marshmallow and rose perfume paired with a 2013 Westhofener Morstein Riesling Auslese, Wittmann, Rheinhessen. A great fruity and sweet combination. A quiet, intimate and luxurious venue, and an absolutely amazing gastronomic journey! However, the evening didn’t end there. We then took the journey back south to the BANYAN TREE Phuket. The location, a restaurant beside a lagoon. A perfect venue, especially as a stunning sunset was the backdrop. The dinner was held at ‘Tre’ which is the French Vietnamese restaurant. The Welcome drink was a English 2008 Brut Sparkling Wine, Jenkyn Place Vineyard in Hampshire. This sparkling wine is capable of holding its own against top champagnes because they share similar growing conditions. The wine was served with lobster canapés with a medallion avocado sauce. This was a surprise. A delicious meal in a magnificently warm ambiance. Feb 4th, another journey. The day started in the afternoon at the Banyan Tree wine cellar. It was also an opportunity for me to mingle with professionals from the industry; sommeliers, F&B, Directors, GMs and wine gurus from Bangkok; and the highlight was the presence of the Austrian winemaker, Gerhard Kracher who presented his wines at his station. It was so generous from FIN to organise this ‘FIN’s Fabulous Boutique Wine Tasting Party’ featuring 55 of FIN’s fabulous handcrafted boutique wines from Austria and from 8 other countries: Germany, Netherlands, Western Australia, France, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, Chile and a nice selection of fabulous party food catered by Banyan Tree.
The final chapter was dinner at Paresa Phuket ‘Paresa’ means heaven of the heavens, and guests would discover this from this evening with stunning views, fine food from the open kitchen from chef Luca Mancini, executive chef of Paresa, and superb wines from Gerhard Kracher. Weingut Kracher is one of the best known sweet wine producers in the world. Despite Gerhard Kracher’s relatively short time as Director and head winemaker of the company, he has continued to showcase the family’s legacy that his father Alois Kracher Jr. and grandfather Alois Kracher Sr. built, and has truly made a name for himself in the international wine market. The evening was well received by Dawid Koegelenberg, GM of Paresa who is passionate about food and wines and personally paired the dishes for this wonderful evening. It was a really fabulous journey, and you are always welcome to contact FIN for any fabulous journeys that you would like to have and join. Colorectal Cancer Screening Nowadays, colorectal cancer screening can be performed in several ways, and the most convenient, fast and inexpensive method is the “Fecal Occult Blood Test”, in which a stool sample is sent to a laboratory. If a result is positive, there may be blood in stool, and it is highly recommended to consult a specialist doctor. Colorectal cancer screening also includes advanced medical imaging, such as Barium Enema, Virtual Colonoscopy using high-speed X-ray computed tomography. However, the most recognized screening method is colonoscopy as it does not only yield an accurate result, but can also be curative in case of abnormality found in the colon. People who are at a higher risk and should have colorectal cancer screening include those aged above 50, those with colorectal cancer in family history, those with hereditary inflammable bowel disease. Should you feel uncertain about your risk, our colorectal doctor is right on hand to provide consultation.
In fact, colorectal cancer can be prevented. It usually starts from a polyp similar to a little-finger tip in size. Left unattended, the polyp can grow and become cancer, taking around 5 - 10 years. Due to a small polyp size, it can go without any symptoms. Therefore, colorectal cancer screening at an early stage is vital to the prevention of colorectal cancer. If any polyp is found, it can be removed right away to stop the onset of colorectal cancer.

Thanyapura Phuket chosen to host first ‘Supersports 10 Miles International Run’ outside of Bangkok in March Thanyapura Phuket is to welcome its first international running event after being named host of the ‘Supersports 10 Miles International Run 2015 Phuket – presented by Thanyapura’, with thousands of runners from across the world lining up for the 6am start on Sunday, March 22nd, 2015. Supersports, Thailand’s leading sports chain, and leading sports and health complex Thanyapura Phuket announced the new race this week, at a Phuket press conference presided over by Mr. Nisit Jansomwong, Phuket Governor. Thanyapura Phuket is the first host of the Supersports 10 Miles International Run outside of Bangkok. The first race in Bangkok in 2013 drew 4,000 runners, which rose to over 7,000 runners for last year’s event. The unique race evokes track and field’s earliest days in ancient Greece, when Olympians contested races measured in feet and miles (the original marathon race was 26 miles and 385 yards), and gives runners a chance to register a personal best over another distance. The Supersports 10 Miles International Run Phuket 2015 is to be raced over four distances, from the signature 10-mile (16km) event, to 5 miles (8km), 2 miles (3.2km) and 500 meters for children aged 4-12 years.
Philipp Graf von Hardenberg, President and CEO of Thanyapura Phuket
The highlight is the 10-mile race; divided between men and women, and into age ranges of 15-29 years, 30-39 years, 40-49 years, 50-59 years and 60 years and older. In the international race, the first, second and third-placed runners get cash prize of THB20,000, THB10,000 and THB5,000 respectively. Thai runners placed first, second and third get cash prizes of THB10,000, THB7,000 and THB 3,000 respectively. First to fifth placed runners in each group receive a trophy. Interested runners may apply to join the race from now until March 13th, 2015 at www.thanyapura.com (Registration for running bib, time-chip and running shirt is on Saturday, March 21st at Thanyapura from 10am – 6pm). Race entry fee is BHT500 for the 10-mile race, BHT400 for 5-mile and 2-mile races and BHT300 for the 500-meter race. Thanyapura Phuket and Supersports members will receive a discount of BHT100 off the entry fee for each race type. Event medals will be given to every runner. Shirts will be given to the first 1,500 registered runners.

PATONG BEACH Jungceylon Located centrally in Patong Beach is the newest addition to the growing trend of shopping malls in Phuket. ‘Jungceylong’ was the old name for Phuket when it was still a prosperous port town and tradingin the region was at its peak. This shopping mall retains a lot of the old history of Phuket in its architecture and style and is a joy to visit for this alone. The choice of goods is world-class, comprising space well over 300 shops with ample car parking space, restaurants, bars, cinema and bowling alley along with everything else you could possibly need for a busy day shopping. Banana Walk The area’s newest shopping centre is located just 100 metres south of Soi Bangla on the beach road, right next to Banana Disco. The mall is multilevel (three floors) and its overall design leans toward minimaland modernistic, at night the lighting, ranging fromblue to red, gives Banana Walk the feeling of entering a spaceship dock in a science fiction movie. Shopping, dining and cosmetics are the three main thrusts of this complex in which you can find almost anything to eat, drink, or buy. You even can improve your well-being at a spa or make yourself even more beautiful at an aesthetic centre or at the onsite hairdresser. KATA & KARON BEACH Kata Plaza Nowadays there are in fact two distinct shopping malls with a bazaar-like feel to them, both are located close to the Kata Palace Hotel and Club Med along Kata Road which runs parallel to Kata Beach Road. The newer of the two is flanked by tailor shops, a pharmacy, and a cozy fan-cooled café along with a minimart and the inevitable optician’s shop. The two-lane plaza really is a one-stop destination for all your holiday souvenirs. Karon Bazaar A large, covered market-like shopping centre set in the central area of Karon Beach Road, right between Woraburi Phuket and Moenvenpick Resorts. The bazaar features just about everything you’ll ever need. Karon Bazaar is a smaller beachsideversion of the famous Phuket Weekend Market in Phuket Town. Andaman Transport
Transport on the island How much of Phuket have you actually seen? Wouldn’t you like to explore some more? Well, here we list some of your options for getting around the island’s highways and byways. To and from the airport Airport transfers are relatively simple. The airport is at the far north of the island, some 30 kilometers from Phuket Town and even further from most of the popular beaches like Patong and Karon. It is best to use one of the two official transport companies with booths right inside the arrival lounge, you can’t miss them. Private Airport Limousines or minibuses are available to get to the ma jor beaches at the south or west of the island. Metered taxis are also available. The Airport Bus is a cheaper alternative as long as you are not in a rush. Ask at the airport for their current departure schedules and pricing. Car rental is available and companies, such as Budget and National have offices located in the airport. ‘Tuk-Tuks’ If you want your own private taxi, look for a tuk tuk, a tiny mini-truck converted in the manner of the bigger song-taews mentioned above to carry about four (or more!) passengers.
The tuk-tuk gets its name from the noise its little engine makes. There are fleets of these in all ma jor tourist areas and they will take you anywhere for a price. The going rate for the relatively short ride between Patong and Phuket town can be as much as 450 THB, one way! You can also rent one of these tuk-tuks for the day. Expect to pay around 2,000 THB or more. This can be a good way to get about the island if you prefer not to drive yourself. Motorcycle Taxis These will be a new experience for many people and are a convenient, yet nerve wracking, way to get around. All fares must be negotiated before the ride. These taxi motor cycle drivers are easily identified by their special colored jackets showing the location of their home base. Many have the word ‘taxi’ written in English on this jacket. Do not take a taxi from anyone who is not wearing one of these jackets. Renting a Motorcycle Motorcycles, big and small, can be rented all over the island and are a popular choice for many tourists. Zipping around with the breeze in your hair is tempting for anyone but do be careful, the hospitals here see a never-ending stream of foreigners arriving with skin missing from arms and legs, or sometimes worse. The accident rate on Phuket is one of the highest in Thailand, with 90% of road accidents involving motorcycles! Note that Thai law requires the driver to carry a valid license at all times and all riders to wear helmets. Also motor cycle lights must be turned on at all times, including during the daytime! The police occasionally enforce all these laws, so beware. The real danger in Phuket is this: NONE of the motorcycles rented here have insurance. Renting Your Own Car Since Phuket is quite a large island, renting your own car can be one of the most pleasant ways to get around and it gives you freedom to go where and when you want. Renting is easy; private rental cars are readily found in every beach area and ma jor rental companies operate in most resorts. When renting private vehicles from the side of the road be aware that few of these vehicles have insurance and this can prove disastrous in the event of an accident. Renting a car allows you get off the island and see the beautiful, neighboring provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi. The roads are good and the scenery spectacular, making for a great day out. Regional Buses The long distance bus station is in Phuket Town is directly across from here both air-con tour buses and cheap, ‘orange crush’ buses leave for destinations north, south and east. There are regular services to Bangkok, Krabi, Surat Thani, Nakorn Srithammarat, Trang, Haad Yai and other minor provincial capitals.

Transport by Boat Regular ferry boat services from Phuket run only to the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Yao Noi and Krabi. There are unscheduled boats to Koh Bon, Racha Yai and Koh Yao Yai. You can get to Koh Lanta by changing boats at Koh Phi Phi. Song-taews There are few buses on Phuket and the main form of transport from beach to town is the ‘song taew’; a truck converted to carry passengers in the back on two long benches. They are usually colorful with a sign on front showing where they are going. These vehicles leave from a set stop by the fresh produce market in Phuket Town, reaching every ma jor beach area on the island. They run approximately every hour but there are no fixed schedules, and they run when there are sufficient passengers. When leaving the beach areas to head back to town they usually cruise slowly around the streets picking up passengers. Song-taews are slow but cheap with the fare from Phuket town to Patong now set at just 25 THB per person!

Andaman
GETTING TO KNOW the Southern Andaman Region of Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta
as it could actually be classified as a mud flat, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumping activity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high difficult rating. Pra Nang Beach Connected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local fishermen leave offerings for good fortune.
Three hours drive south from Phuket through stunning limestone cliffs and dense forest brings you to the southern playground of the Krabi region of the Andaman overlooking Phang Nga Bay with its many scattered islands, hidden bays and beaches. Throw away your watch and bask in nature’s beauty or snorkel, dive, rock climb, fish, kayak, hike, sail, party, spa or wine and dine to your heart’s content – this region has it all. Ao Nang Beach Just 18 km from Krabi Town is beautiful Ao Nang with its 83 scattered islands. Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and ma jestic limestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beaches including East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range. Noppharat Thara Beach Just 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined with ma jestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides. Railay Beach This beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. West Railey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang. East Railey which lies across the peninsula from West Railey is different from other beaches in the area www.theguidephuket.com
Klong Muang Beach/Tubkaak Krabi’s latest beach destination, Muang Klong boasts both 5-star and boutique hotels like the Sheraton Krabi Resort, the Nakamanda and the Tubkaak Resort and offers powderwhite sand and safe swimming. The Lanta Island Group About 53 islands are included in this group situated at the southern limit of Krabi Province. Koh Lanta Yai is the largest and is both a traveler’s and up-market vacationer’s paradise and is as yet relatively undeveloped. You can get to Lanta on the regular ferry from Jao Fah Pier in Krabi Town. The prime attractions are its long beaches, clear water, laid back atmosphere and scuda diver’s paradise where most of the nicest beaches and tourist attractions are located. The Phi Phi Islands Known for phenomenal natural beauty, particularly the famous twin bays with their the curving beaches upon which lies the largest town. Phi Phi islands are some of the most beautiful in the world with superb scenery, silvery sand beaches and Emerald green seas with coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. Hardly two hours journey by boat from Ao Nang, the twin islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh provide excellent accommodation options and are known as ma jor “party islands.” Poda Islands Situated south of Ao Nang, 8 Kilometers offshore, Koh Poda or Poda Group Islands are fringed by clear waters and offer white sandy beaches, as well as, pristine coral reefs. These islands are not affected so much by the monsoon therefore are year-round attractions and an excellent place for fishing. Poda island with white sand beaches and clear turquoise seawater abounded with schools of colorful fish.

The intensity of the pool’s turquoise colored water varies according to the light and time of the day so a good time to visit is at dawn or early morning.
Bird Watching A trip to Krabi can be a very rewarding visit for any bird lovers. With easily accessible mangroves and low lying forests, there are many places to spot rare birds. Two excellent locations are Khao Kanat Nam, close to Krabi Town, and Khao No Chuchi Forest Preserve.
Tiger Cave Temple Tiger Cave Temple or Wat Tham Sua in Thai is located about 3 kilometers from Krabi town. The inside of this cave features tiger prints captured in stone and is in the middle of an abundant forest with gigantic ancient trees. This place is remarkable archaeologically as many artifacts have been found on the premises including tools, pottery and the mold for the Buddha’s footprint.
