Phuket..

The Pearl of the Andaman

What comes into the mind of travelers when they start to think about sea, sun and sand? Phuket is increasingly one of the answers to this…. and for good reason as the island offers warm tropical ocean, beautiful beaches, stunning scenery and a multitude of opportunities for exciting and fun activities. Thailand’s largest island, Phuket, is located 862 kilometers south of Bangkok. Often called the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’, or ‘Pearl of the South’, its natural resources; rocky peninsulas, limestone cliffs, white powdery beaches, tranquil broad bays and tropical in-land forests contribute to making it southern Thailand’s wealthiest, busiest, most visited and most popular island and province.

Nestled in the tropical zone off the west coast of southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean, the province covers an area of approximately 543 square kilometers (excluding small islets). It is estimated that Phuket Province covers an area of approximately 590 square kilometers if its 39 other small islands are included. The island’s total length, from north to south, is estimated at 48.7 kilometers and it is approximately 21.3 kilometers wide. Phuket borders with Phang-Nga province to the north; connected by the Sarasin Bridge. The remainder of the island is encircled by the Andaman Sea; an area which is home to many of the best diving sites in the country. Staying on the island is easy, as there are only two seasons in the year - the rainy season (May to October) and the hot season (November to April). The low season of Phuket is between September and October as these are the wettest months. The best period for a visit, is from November to February, when it is possible to see the clear blue sky, feel the fresh sea breezes and marvel at the crystal clear waters while lying on powdery, palm-fringed beaches. Average temperatures ranges between 23°C and 33°C. Phuket’s topology is exceptional with 70 percent of its area covered with mountains which stretch from north to south and the remaining 30 percent being plains located in the central and eastern parts of the island. The island does not have any ma jor rivers, but has nine smaller brooks and creeks. Phuket has a lot more to offer than just its natural beauty. Sino-Portuguese architecture casts its spell delighting travelers to Phuket Town, while Phuket-style hospitality never fails to impress visitors from all walks of life. In addition, accommodation ranging from world-class resorts to tropical-style bungalows caters to the different needs of travelers. For seafood lovers, there is so much choice including Phuket’s famous lobster. Altogether, these characteristics make Phuket a truly unique destination.

t e k u h P e v i Alternat It’s a fairly big island offering all manner of things to do. However, it’s quite surprising that there are still a number of holiday makers who come to get away from everyday life but soon get bored with dreamy beaches, comfortable hotel rooms and fantastic food. They want to experience more. They want to see how the locals live and experience something different. Luckily, with Phuket being the island it is, there are a number of other options for those seeking something other than the norm. Here are The Guide Phuket’s options for an alternative Phuket holiday experience. lS +(1 S !JS*/"- S ! Find the one that you really want to spend your holiday time on. If you spend your time on Patong Beach, it’s highly likely that you will think all Phuket’s beaches are the same, crowded. However, while it’s true to say that Patong Beach is often bustling with people, there are others to where you can escape and find complete solitude. Drive away from Patong and you’ll soon come to realise that there are smaller, quieter beaches. And by the time you reach the far north or south of the island you’re guaranteed to find beaches that you’ll have virtually to yourself, even during the high-season. So remember, crowded beach or quiet beach, the option is completely yours. lS ","-"' S -,SmS / !",-S (' ,- +" , All Buddhist Monasteries are open to the public during the day, and visitors are usually welcome. Since these are active holy places of worship, and the residence of monks, visitors should show respecting keeping well dressed and remaining quiet, Mum and Dad; keep the kids on a leash and always be culturally sensitive. lS % )! '-S + $$"' The wild elephant population of Phuket was wiped out last century, but has been replaced in recent years by and influx of animals for the tourist trade. Today there remains just a few hundred elephants on Phuket Island, all domesticated, most working in tourism. Indeed, riding an elephant is an experience not to be missed. The lumbering monsters are incredibly agile. Taking an elephant ride helps to keep the beasts employed, fed and out of the cities, where many can be taken by destitute owners in search of money and food. lS !/$ -S (1' Phuket Town is small but incredibly interesting, a potpourri of different cultural influences of markets and shopping centers, restaurants and other entertainment facilities. Anyone spending a few days on Phuket Island should take time to visit, be it for sight-seeing, cultural or historical interest or shopping. lS (( Phuket’s only zoo is small, but pleasant, displaying some of Thailand’s almost vanished wildlife. Their tigers are fed well enough that one can sit with them and have a photo taken. We recommend going early or late, to avoid the tour buses that arrive mid morning and mid afternoon. It is in a small road off the east side of Chao Fah East Road, about half way between the town and Chalong’s 5-way intersection. The turnoff is well signposted and easy to find. www.theguidephuket.com

lS /%-/+ %S "%% Cultural shows featuring skilled Thai dancers from the different regions of the country, martial arts demonstrations, elephant rides and Thai dinners are all brought together at Phuket’s original cultural garden; there is also attached orchid farm for all the budding botanists out there. lS /' 3S /&) Consider yourself adventurous? Got real guts? If you haven’t tried bungee jump yet, you should take the ride to the top with a big rubber band around your ankles and fight the internal struggle that every jumper meets when standing 54 meters above the ground. Logic might tell us it is quite safe, but another part of our body screams “No! Don’t jump! But with their friends at the bottom, waiting expectantly, most people manage to throw themselves off and experience a rush like no other. lS /' % S + $$"' With most of rainforest on Phuket long since eaten up by rubber plantations, it is not easy to find ideal trekking grounds. Again, it’s best to sign on with company providing this service. Often they take their trekkers right off Phuket into neighbouring Phang Nga province, where some beautiful areas of forest remain. lS ) , Massage and herbal steam rooms Health resorts, spas and herbal saunas are proliferating, and some fine example offering a wide range of treatments are now found on Phuket. Thailand has its own traditional herbal saunas, and there are several local ones around the island. While many large and resorts now feel they are incomplete without a spa, there are also several independent establishments. lS " 1S ("'-, Phuklet’s most famous view point, Laem Phrom Thep at the very bottom of the island, is on the ‘must see’ list for every Thai visitor to the island. Thus it attracts a fleet of tour busses and car each evening as people come to witness the sun fall into the Andaman Sea. Indeed, it’s often a spectacular sight, but there are many quieter places. The view point on the hill behind Kata Noi attracts fewer people and when the heavens turn red, the view from any of the beaches can also be spectacular.

2015 Challenge Laguna Phuket Tri-Fest To See Defending Champions This year’s Challenge Laguna Phuket Tri-Fest (CLPTF) will once again see world champions compete for a slice of the race’s 25,000 Euro prize purse. Following the success of its inaugural event in 2013 and the 2nd edition last year, the iconic multi-sports weeklong event “Challenge Laguna Phuket Tri-Fest” is set to take place again this November with the 22nd Laguna Phuket Triathlon (LPT) on 22nd and to culminate by the 3rd Challenge Laguna Phuket (CLP) a week later on 29th. The unique enduring appeal of Laguna Phuket Triathlon comprising 1.8km swim, 55km bike, and 12km run and the half distance challenges of Challenge Laguna Phuket featuring 1.9km swim, 90km bike, and 21km run, are attracting entries from leading international pro athlete personalities, as well as age groupers worldwide.

Athletes near and far find the event an exciting one to end the season. At the time of writing this article, more than 1,300 athletes have signed up for the two main races. An Estimated 1,500 athletes are expected to join the race this year. Last Year’s Champions to Defend Title In the Laguna Phuket Triathlon race, 2014 Champions Massimo Cigana (ITA) and Alberto Casadei (ITA) have registered to return to defend their legendary title impressively made together last year when they crossed the finish line as one and claimed LPT’s first dual champions in history. A week after LPT, the Challenge Laguna Phuket race will see its champion, Swiss Olympian Ruedi Wild defending his title from last year’s race. Wild made his LPT debut in 2012 with a title win which was successfully defended in 2013 race before his first CLP title win last year. In August this year, he came in 3rd at Ironman 70.3 European Championship in Wiesbaden, Germany. CLP will also see many athlete stars such as Luke McKenzie (AUS) who has just won his title from Ironman Cairns, Australia, earlier in June. McKenzie is a frequent competitor at Laguna Phuket’s triathlon races. Last year, he came in 3rd at 2014 Challenge Laguna Phuket race. This year, McKenzie will be joined by his partner Beth Gerdes (USA) who began racing professionally in 2012 and took a hiatus in 2014 to give birth to their daughter, Wynne. Gerdes is back in action and looking towards qualifying for the Ironman World Championships in October 2015.

To generate over THB 90 millions Asia Pacific remains the main source with China as emerging new market. “The enduring appeal of Laguna Phuket Triathlon and the unique challenges of Challenge Laguna Phuket continue to draw endurance sports enthusiasts to Phuket each year,” said Ms. Prapa Hemmin, Director of Sales-MICE & Corporate Events, Laguna Phuket, www.theguidephuket.com

“With thousands of athletes, each with 3-5 followers; family members, friends, partners, media, sponsors and/or supporters traveling together to Phuket from around the world and spending 4-5 nights during the weeklong Tri-Fest, the event is projected to generate over 90 million baht spending in tourism segment on the island.” she concluded. China as an emerging new market Once again Asia Pacific is the main source of participants coming to the Tri-Fest with top ten countries of origin include, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Australia. From Europe, United Kingdom provides the highest number of participants, followed by Switzerland, Germany and Spain. “What’s interesting this year is the significant increase of participants from China,” said Prapa, “In the past two years, we saw more than a 50% growth of athletes from China both at the Laguna Phuket International Marathon (LPIM) in June and now the Tri-Fest. Last year we had a total of 33 athletes from China joining both LPT and CLP. This year we already have around 50 registered and we are expecting to see more than double athletes from China participated in the Tri-Fest.” The growth coincides with a report on a recent purchase of the world’s leading triathlon organiser by a Chinese company.

GETTING TO KNOW...

Kanokpat Hongsakultanachot Professional for Semi-Permanent Make up at Kanokpat Beauty Art Having started her career as a Phuket-based news anchor, Ms Kanokpat soon discovered a passion for the art of beauty and now owns a successful business, Kanokpat Beauty Art where various kinds of semi-permanent make up are available for beauty enhancing. What is your background and how did you become a beauty instructor? I was a news anchor and at that time put on make-up to give myself thicker eyebrows. Then I found out about 3D eyebrow tattoos and went to Bangkok to get some. Later, I returned to Bangkok to learn how to do them, and after finishing the course started making eyebrow tattoos for friends. Five years later the business was going so well I decided to do this as a full time career. What services does Kanokpat Beauty Art currently offer? I started with the 3D eyebrow tattoos and later learned enough to allow me to create many types of eyebrow tattoo based on customer requirements. I then learned about other semi-permanent make-up including eyeliner tattoos, lips tattoos and cheek blush tattoos. I also do nipple tattoos; hairline tattoos, tattoo touch-ups, Camouflaging, Remover, Color Correction and training courses. We’ve heard there are special choices for specific customers. What are they? I will soon be one of the first Thai businesses in South East Asia to offer paramedical tattoos which help fix scars, stretch marks, hare lip or lose nipples as a result of breast cancer operations. This service will be available in the near future as I am still studying it. Along with paramedical and semi-permanent make up, I do tattoos that follows Chinese beliefs about elements in people aka Wuxing. There are five elements; earth, metal, fire, gold and wood and according to the birth year and date of each person. For this eyebrow tattoo, I will check the birthday, the element and the fortune of the customers and they will get the eyebrow tattoos tailor made for them.

www.theguidephuket.com

What is the outstanding point of Kanokpat Beauty Art? Our concept is beauty and safety. The products we use are certified. The colour we use contains only 0.04 per cent of iron oxide which is the standard approved by the US Government. The products we use have also passed FDA, EU Testing and MRI. We care for our customers and wish the best result for them. What is your suggestion for those who want to make any type of semi-permanent make up? Skill, experience, hygiene standard and ethics are important factors to check before making a decision. Be careful of the products which contain cadmium as they can cause skin cancer and other allergic reactions. Make sure the person who does it is certified. What is your future plan for the business? My goal for now is to manage the existing shop and take care of the students learning from me. I expect to increase the number of people who can offer quality beauty art work and respect the standard of hygiene and safety. Paramedical tattoos are very new in this region so I am doing a case study on those at the moment. Beauty art work will change the lives of many people by enhancing parts of their body they want to hide. Total Knee Replacement lets you rise and shine on your own renewed joints Did you know that our knee joints are one of the most heavily used parts in the body? They uphold us from the days we barely toddle, during the heyday of human life when we move about with might and main, through to the days we are beleaguered with age. It is unlike a heavily trodden road where simple repair work or certain touch-up is possible. To date, normal wear and tear in knee joints remains largely irrecoverable. That is why Total Knee Replacement has stepped in to stop knee joint degeneration. Total Knee Replacement surgery is designed to replace the damaged articular cartilage or gliding surface and any associated loss of bone structure or ligament support. The prostheses (replacement knees) come in numerous configurations designed for replacement of specific patterns of advanced arthritis. Although complicated as the procedure may appear, today’s medical advancement has made it far more simple and a lot less scary for those who are recommended to have knee replacement surgery. As a long-established leader in orthopaedic care, Bangkok Hospital Phuket offers state-of-the-art Total Knee Replacement, complete with full-scale clinical support before and after surgery to ensure maximum patient safety, such as physical examinations and muscle exercise before surgery, physical therapy after surgery. Total Knee Replacement

For better patient safety, Total Knee Replacement will generally be performed under spinal anesthesia, the effect of which will last as long as 48 hours, all under the supervision of anesthesiologists. Next, a specialized orthopaedist will perform the computer-assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), starting from planning the most effective surgery pattern being suitable for each single patient. The technique will allow the orthopaedist to fully scrutinize bone structures and come up with the most precise endoscope-guided placement of prostheses, all in the most accurate yet the least invasive manner. Total adherence to the mechanical axis will ensure their long-term endurance and sustainability. With sophisticated pain management, most patients can rise and flex their muscles 24 hours after surgery, with walker support. Since the first case of knee replacement surgery was done over 50 years ago, we have been constantl y forging ahead with new advances and refinement. As a medical treatment of choice for those with advanced or end-stage arthritis, today’s Total Knee Replacement has key advantages that definitely outnumber all the fears and misconceptions: i.e. minimal incision (with the least damage to nearby tissue), minimal pain, fast recovery, minimized complications and side effects, integrated physiotherapy for a full recovery, premium prosthesis quality for long-term endurance. It was found that about 85% of artificial knees still worked after 20 years. And the bottom line is the renewed and reinforced ability to get back to an everyday active lifestyle with greater comfort. To rise and shine just 1 - 2 days after knee replacement surgery is simpl y achievable nowadays.

My favorite way of refreshing my body and mind is to get pampered at a spa. For my latest pampering I opted for a full-service spa called ‘De Flora Spa’ which opened only 2 years ago in Patong. This stand-alone four story building on Rat-Uthit Road, not far from Jungceylon, offers full spa treatments and beauty services that make you feel brand new from head to toe. At De Flora Spa you can spend time relaxing with massages, body and facial treatments, beauty treatments such as pedicures/manicures, hair waxing, body art tattoo, as well as more complex treatments which are collaborated with Siam International Clinic – one of Thailand’s leading medical service providers. But for me, I choose the 3-hour ‘Perfect Life’ package. A recently introduced package for those who want to spend long hours getting a truly relaxing spa experience. De Flora Spa’s manger told me that they also customize packages to meet each client’s individual need. They can choose to use the spa’s other facilities including the sauna, steam room or Jacuzzi bath combined with other body and facial treatments. There are also individual treatments for those who wish to spend less time at the spa. www.theguidephuket.com

After a quick inspection, I learned that this complex is perfect for all spa/massage and beauty treatment needs, a Thai massage area, foot massage chairs, facial massage zone and Thai-oil massage beds. Each area separated, clean and with a quiet ambience. I am taken to the VIP room where my therapist is waiting to perform my ‘Perfect Life’ treatment. I change into a bathrobe and lie on my stomach on the massage bed and wait. First she applies a body scrub cream made from jasmine rice combined with other ingredients which help nourishing the skin. She slowly rubs my body massaging softly. I already feel sleepy. After about an hour the first step of the treatment is finished. I wash the scrub cream from my body. I notice my skin is smoother and brighter. How nice. Now it’s time for an aroma therapy oil massage, my favorite treatment. I always like being massaged on my back and shoulders as my muscles get tense due to my work. The strong but gently massage from Khun Whan’s palms helped a lot. As this treatment package takes quite a long time to complete, after the oil massage I’m served a snack, sliced pineapple and watermelon with hot tea. The third step, a collagen mask facial massage. My face is gently cleansed by the special facial scrub, removing all the dirt and small pimples. She then applies the collagen mask cream. I don’t know how long this step takes as I fall asleep, but I know that after I see a glowing new lady in the mirror. I’m now ready for my hard work again. Thanks De Flora Spa – heavenly relaxation at a reasonable price! De Flora Spa opens daily from 10.00 am till midnight. Prior booking is recommended. Firefly Re-launch Party Everlasting memories are often created when you find yourself in an extraordinary environment, surrounded by amazing people. Based on this principle, the re-launch of the Firefly Lounge at Natai Beach Resort & Spa, Phang-Nga on the exquisite Natai Beach, Phang Nga, was definitely a night to remember. Located a mere 16 kilometres from Sarasin Bridge north of Phuket, the resort is part of the Maikhao Dream group. Offering an incredible vista over the Andaman Sea with a minimalist, yet enticing decor, Firefly Lounge is the place to visit for those looking for refreshing drinks and entertainment in the peaceful and tranquil area of Phang Nga. The re-launch was attended by many of the resort’s guests and outsiders who had made the trip from Phuket. The event was held to celebrate the recent makeover of the venue and in anticipation of the coming high season. Attendees were delighted by the selection of snacks and finger food on offer which ranged from Melon and Parma Ham and Patatas Bravas to traditional Thai food served platter after platter to the hungry diners. This was alongside a free-flow selection of premium beverages and sumptuous cocktails. Executive Chef, Rudolph Zielinski, and his team of talented cooks did an outstanding job as both the service and quality of ingredients were incredible.

Entertainment was not left behind; talented violinist and entertainment manager of the resort, Alexei Grigorev, started off the party with some amazing violin music providing a unique backdrop for the sunset taking over the Andaman Sea. Firefly Lounge was a blast and its main highlights were the ignited faces of all the guests through out the spectacular flair show and some minor acts of cocktails being set ablaze. All in all, the re-launch of the Firefly Lounge at Natai Beach Resort & Spa, Phang-Nga. was an evening filled with good food, great entertainment and amazing people; the kind of event you wish to experience during your holiday, the kind of people you want to know, and the kind of place you want to be. Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation’s 11th Mai Khao Turtle Fun Run & Mini Marathon 2015 at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation in collaboration with the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa and the MKMTF partners hosted its annual fundraising community sports event, the 11th Mai Khao Marine Foundation Fun Run and Mini Marathon 2015, on Sunday October 4th at Pru Jeh San Lake on Phuket’s idyllic Mai Khao Beach. The event was a fun, family oriented affair open for all ages and the general public. 1,200 runners joined the race which started and finished at JW’s car park and encompassed the surrounding beauty of the Mai Khao village. There were two distances: 4.5km fun run and a 10.5km mini marathon on a new improved route with a spectacular view of the Andaman Sea. For both, overall fun run 4.5km and 10.5Km - male and female category, trophies and cash prizes were awarded for 1st to 5th place finishers. The annual Turtle Fun Run and Mini Marathon – while aimingto encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle –

is a collaborative effort by the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation and its partners to raise funds and awareness of the conservation work done by the Phuket Marine Biological Center and its “The Injured Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Program” to rescue, rehabilitate and release injured turtles, dolphins, whales and dugongs. Phuket’s endangered sea turtles – which use Mai Khao Beach as a nesting ground – are facing multiple threats, their numbers having severely depleted in recent years. Commercial fishing kills thousands of them every year, while many more die from eating or becoming trapped in plastic debris littering the ocean. The MKMTF is very proud to announce that they have become official International Union for the Conservation of Nature Official Member Organization and thus has built a dedicated Marine Turtle Shelter and Education Center which is home to 3 disabled turtles that now live at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa.

For more information about the foundation, please contact the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation coordinator via email info@maikhaoturtlefoundation.com or call +66 (0)89 733 8830 www.facebook.com/theguidephuket

Transport

Transport on the island How much of Phuket have you actually seen? Wouldn’t you like to explore some more? Well, here we list some of your options for getting around the island’s highways and byways. To and from the airport Airport transfers are relatively simple. The airport is at the far north of the island, some 30 kilometers from Phuket Town and even further from most of the popular beaches like Patong and Karon. It is best to use one of the two official transport companies with booths right inside the arrival lounge, you can’t miss them. Private Airport Limousines or minibuses are available to get to the ma jor beaches at the south or west of the island. Metered taxis are also available. The Airport Bus is a cheaper alternative as long as you are not in a rush. Ask at the airport for their current departure schedules and pricing. Car rental is available and companies, such as Budget and National have offices located in the airport. ‘Tuk-Tuks’ If you want your own private taxi, look for a tuk tuk, a tiny mini-truck used to carry about four (or more!) passengers. The tuk-tuk gets its name from the noise its little engine

makes. There are fleets of these in all ma jor tourist areas and they will take you anywhere for a price. The going rate for the relatively short ride between Patong and Phuket Town can be as much as 450 THB, one way! You can also rent one of these tuk-tuks for the day. Expect to pay around 2,000 THB or more. This can be a good way to get about the island if you prefer not to drive yourself. Motorcycle Taxis These will be a new experience for many people and are a convenient, yet nerve wracking way to get around. All fares must be negotiated before the ride. These taxi motorcycle drivers are easily identified by their special colored jackets showing the location of their home base. Many have the word ‘taxi’ written in English on this jacket. Do not take a taxi from anyone who is not wearing one of these jackets. Renting a Motorcycle Motorcycles, big and small, can be rented all over the island and are a popular choice for many tourists. Zipping around with the breeze in your hair is tempting for anyone but do be careful, the hospitals here see a never-ending stream of foreigners arriving with skin missing from arms and legs, or sometimes worse. The accident rate on Phuket is one of the highest in Thailand with 90% of road accidents involving motorcycles! Note that Thai law requires the driver to carry a valid license at all times and all riders to wear helmets. Also motorcycle lights must be turned on at all times, including during the daytime! The police occasionally enforce all these laws, so beware. The real danger in Phuket is this: NONE of the motorcycles rented here have insurance. Renting Your Own Car Since Phuket is quite a large island, renting your own car can be one of the most pleasant ways to get around and it gives you freedom to go where and when you want. Renting is easy; private rental cars are readily found in every beach area and ma jor rental companies operate in most resorts. When renting private vehicles from the side of the road be aware that few of these vehicles have insurance and this can prove disastrous in the event of an accident. Renting a car allows you get off the island and see the beautiful, neighboring provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi. The roads are good and the scenery spectacular, making for a great day out. Regional Buses The long distance bus station is in Phuket Town and across from here both air-con tour buses and cheap, ‘orange crush’ buses leave for destinations north, south and east. There are regular services to Bangkok, Krabi, Surat Thani, Nakorn Srithammarat, Trang, Haad Yai and other minor provincial capitals.

Transport by Boat Regular ferry boat services from Phuket run only to the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Yao Noi and Krabi. There are unscheduled boats to Koh Bon, Racha Yai and Koh Yao Yai. You can get to Koh Lanta by changing boats at Koh Phi Phi. Song-taews There are few buses on Phuket and the main form of transport from beach to town is the ‘song taew’; a truck converted to carry passengers in the back on two long benches. They are usually colorful with a sign on front showing where they are going. These vehicles leave from a set stop by the fresh produce market in Phuket Town, reaching every ma jor beach area on the island. They run approximately every hour but there are no fixed schedules, and they run when there are sufficient passengers. When leaving the beach areas to head back to town they usually cruise slowly around the streets picking up passengers. Song-taews are slow but cheap with the fare from Phuket Town to Patong now set at just 25 THB per person!

Andaman

g Gettion t know

The Southern Andaman Region of Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta

Three hours drive south from Phuket through stunning limestone cliffs and dense forest brings you to the southern playground of the Krabi region of the Andaman overlooking Phang Nga Bay with its many scattered islands, hidden bays and beaches. Throw away your watch and bask in nature’s beauty or snorkel, dive, rock climb, fish, kayak, hike, sail, party, spa or wine and dine to your heart’s content – this region has it all. Ao Nang Beach Just 18 km from Krabi Town is beautiful Ao Nang with its 83 scattered islands. Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and ma jestic limestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beaches including East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range. Noppharat Thara Beach Just 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined with ma jestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides. Railay Beach This beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. West Railey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang. East Railey which lies across the peninsula from West Railey is different from other beaches in the area as it could actually be classified as a mud flat, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumping activity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high difficult rating. www.theguidephuket.com

Pra Nang Beach Connected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local fishermen leave offerings for good fortune. Klong Muang Beach/Tubkaak Krabi’s latest beach destination, Muang Klong boasts both 5-star and boutique hotels like the Sheraton Krabi Resort, the Nakamanda and the Tubkaak Resort and offers powderwhite sand and safe swimming. The Lanta Island Group About 53 islands are included in this group situated at the southern limit of Krabi Province. Koh Lanta Yai is the largest and is both a traveler’s and up-market vacationer’s paradise and is as yet relatively undeveloped. You can get to Lanta on the regular ferry from Jao Fah Pier in Krabi Town. The prime attractions are its long beaches, clear water, laid back atmosphere and scuda diver’s paradise where most of the nicest beaches and tourist attractions are located. The Phi Phi Islands Known for phenomenal natural beauty, particularly the famous twin bays with their the curving beaches upon which lies the largest town. Phi Phi islands are some of the most beautiful in the world with superb scenery, silvery sand beaches and Emerald green seas with coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. Hardly two hours journey by boat from Ao Nang, the twin islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh provide excellent accommodation options and are known as ma jor “party islands.” Poda Islands Situated south of Ao Nang, 8 Kilometers offshore, Koh Poda or Poda Group Islands are fringed by clear waters and offer white sandy beaches, as well as, pristine coral reefs. These islands are not affected so much by the monsoon therefore are year-round attractions and an excellent place for fishing. Poda island with white sand beaches and clear turquoise seawater abounded with schools of colorful fish.

Sightseeing by Canoe or Kayak Many companies offer sea canoeing and kayaking adventures around Phang Nga Bay and into the many coves, caves and islets dotting the otherworldly shores around Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. Fishing Abundant sea and even freshwater fishing is available all over this region, from squid boating, to line fishing in Phang Nga Bay, to big game adventures off the Continental Shelf drop-off. Don’t let that big one get away! Bird Watching A trip to Krabi can be a very rewarding visit for any bird lovers. With easily accessible mangroves and low lying forests, there are many places to spot rare birds. Two excellent locations are Khao Kanat Nam, close to Krabi Town, and Khao No Chuchi Forest Preserve.

Highlight Attractions.. Emerald Pool Emerald Pool or Sra Morakot in Thai is located at Klong Thom District. This hot spring originates from a warm stream in the lowland forest. The intensity of the pool’s turquoise colored water varies according to the light and time of the day so a good time to visit is at dawn or early morning. Tiger Cave Temple Tiger Cave Temple or Wat Tham Sua in Thai is located about 3 kilometers from Krabi town. The inside of this cave features tiger prints captured in stone and is in the middle of an abundant forest with gigantic ancient trees. This place is remarkable archaeologically as many artifacts have been found on the premises including tools, pottery and the mold for the Buddha’s footprint.

Highlights & Activities... Rock Climbing Apart from marine sports, Krabi is also an ideal place for rock climbing. Lines of sheer limestone cliffs along Tham Phranang and Rai Le Beaches have challenged thousands of climbers from all over the world every year. The levels of difficulty of the various routes vary, so Whether you’re a professional or just an aspiring adrenalin junkie, the craggy karsts of Krabi offer a huge array of bolted mounts. Diving Both scuba and snorkeling are widely available in warm, coral and fish infested waters with full PADI accreditation courses and live-aboard adventures.

Partying Phi Phi is known worldwide as “Party Island central” and Koh Lanta is not far behind. Krabi Town is more sedate, but there are plenty of good bars and a live music scene to enjoy. Shopping Outlet Village Krabi is located on Phetchakasem Road. It is on the way from the city to the local airport and features a tall lighthouse near the entrance and 6,000 sqm of retail space. Throughout the year, many Thai and foreign travelers visit this outlet which offers over 100 selected leading brands for all ages. Clothing discounted up to 70% is available here. It is open daily from 11:00 a.m. - 9.00 p.m. Enjoying the Local Seafood Have a seafood feast and savor the fresh day’s catch in any number of a fun, laidback, or fine-dining restaurants all over this region.

GETTING THERE By road from Phuket Take a minibus or frequent local bus from Phuket Town’s bus terminal with information regarding timetables, taxi or mini-van shuttle services readily available at hotels, travel agent or Phuket Airport. Renting a car is also a good option and the roads are wide, modern and relatively quiet. To Krabi and Phi Phi by boat It is possible to charter a speedboat or similar transportation to Krabi or Koh Phi Phi, or there are frequent daily ferries operating between Phuket and Phi Phi Island and then on to Krabi, or via the Koh Yao Islands, each taking about two hours.

Andaman

g n i t t e G o t know

the Northern Andaman Region

of Khaolak, Phang Nga

Just an hour’s drive north of Phuket in mainland Phang Nga province, Khaolak is a beautiful area with long, sandy beaches fringed by the many surrounding national parks offering nature lovers a pristine landscape of beaches, jungle-covered mountains, forested valleys, mangroves and estuaries. There’s an abundance of comfortable resorts and bungalows blending into the scenery along the coastline and being more low-key than, Phuket, it’s a place to take it easy, read a book and get back to nature. Go for long walks on the beach, take a nature tour and explore the interior, go sightseeing by elephant, trek through the jungle, or go rafting along the local rivers with one of the daily Eco-Tours.

www.theguidephuket.com

Khaolak is also a great jumping off point in the high season for a trip to the Surin and Similan Islands, renowned for world-class scuba diving, or for the gorgeous Khao Sok National Park further to the north.

Activities in the Khaolak, Phang Nga Nature Tours As Khaolak is surrounded by national parks, an eco-friendly nature tour is a must. A typical tour with pick you up about 09:00 and you’ll be driven to a fishery to have a look at the many exotic species there, and then taken to an elephant camp. Riding an elephant through the jungle is a life-enhancing experience and you’ll be amazed at the gentleness of these huge beasts. After lunch you are bussed up to a camp in the mountains where bamboo rafts then take you downriver. Trekking in Khao Sok National Park to the north is sublime and there are riverside cottages for rent, plus river rafting and tubing. Scuba Diving and Snorkeling Beginner courses and daytrips for experienced divers are freely available, most groups making up about six divers maximum. For those who can’t get enough of the vivid underwater life in this area there are also live-aboard trips. Due west from Khaolak is the Similan Island group with the Surin archipelago to the northwest and by speed boat you can reach the Similans in about 90 minutes from Taplamu Harbor to the south of Khaolak.

Sea Kayaking There are several companies offering sea cave kayaking tours from Khaolak to nearby Phang Nga Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the departure point, the ‘mother ship’, which also transports the kayaks, takes you to limestone islands that have collapsed into themselves leaving the interior intact and untouched over many years. Sea caves lead into these lagoons and when the tide is right the result is akin to visiting a parallel world where time stands still. Wining and Dining Khaolak has an abundance of great Thai and international restaurants, pubs and bars, some offering music and all are welcoming and friendly. Home Stays and Environmentalism North of Khaolak there are many Muslim villages offering fascinating home stays linked to local culture, agriculture and the environment.
