Hopefully you accomplished all the things you set out to do in 2015, but if ticking a few more travel destinations off your bucket list is still one of your goals, we have some fantastic suggestions for great weekend getaways. Frankfurt may be Germany's commecial centre, but there's no shortage of contemporary culture, fine food and festive fun to be had. See 48 hours in Frankfurt on pg38. Lebanon’s pulsating capital Beirut is also a hub of culture, and following a US$15million renovation to the recently reopened Sursock Museum, the city is reasserting itself as a regional centre for the arts (see pg56). And my new favourite city, after a recent visit to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh is a vibrant destination with a fascinating history and unparalleled international festivals. See Fringe benefits on pg16. And finally, if you're still trying to decide where to ring in the new year, see pg 26 for our highlights of Unforgettable New Year's destinations. Back in the Kingdom, national pride bubbles over this month as Bahrain celebrates National Day on December 16 and Bahrain International Circuit hosts concerts and activities for the whole family (see pg14). FRINGE BENEFITS

Edinburgh’s well-earned reputation as a friendly city of festivals is just a small part of its enduring appeal, Mairead Walsh discovers

It’s sung by millions around the globe when the clock strikes 12 on New Year’s Eve and possibly nowhere with more gusto than in Scotland, home of famous poet Robbie Burns, who penned the holiday classic Auld Lang Syne. Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party is one of the world’s greatest New Year celebrations – making The Telegraph’s Top 100 things to do before you die and recently the only festival to appear in the Discovery Channel’s Top 25 World Travel Experiences. Visitors from around the world descend on the Scottish capital for the three-day event that sees Shetland Vikings bearing fire-lit torches, beautiful choral singing in St Giles’ Cathedral, logrolling to traditional Scottish music in the Old Town, and incredible fireworks from Princes Street Gardens. And on New Year’s Day the silliness continues, when revellers by the hundreds congregate at Loony Dook to plunge into the icy waters of the River Forth in fancy dress or jog for 1.6 kilometres in the One O’clock Run along the Royal Mile and then head to the dogsled racing across Holyrood Park, comically coined Dogmanay. However, if you don’t make it for Hogmanay this month, you can always plan a trip around one of Edinburgh’s many festivals. Home to the Fringe Festival, International Book Festival, Edinburgh Military Tattoo, International Film Festival, and Jazz & Blues Festival, to name just a few, Edinburgh is the world’s leading festival city and a draw for visitors all year round. I make my start in the heart of the city, on what is thought to be the oldest road in Edinburgh. Indeed, no visit to the capital would be complete without a walk up the Royal Mile, a collection of

cobbled stoned streets stretching from the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen’s official residence in Scotland, to Edinburgh Castle, arguably the city’s most famous landmark dating back to the 12th century. The Royal Mile is a feast for the senses, from the entrancing groan of the bagpipes played by a local in colourful highland dress to the historical architecture, anecdotes and achievements depicted in plaques and statues of famous figures in Scottish history peppering the route. Some sites to keep an eye out for include Parliament Square and St Giles’ Cathedral, named for the patron saint of Edinburgh, as well as Witches Well, a monument not to witches, but instead to those who were falsely accused of being witches and drowned in Nor Loch. While many of the edifices reflect Medieval Gothic and Renaissance architecture spanning from the 12th to 17th centuries, today many of these are inhabited by tourist shops proffering treats, trinkets and tartan-tastic everything you can imagine, and of course, many, many pubs. Some are definitely worth a visit though. In fact, most pubs in Edinburgh have a great backstory and the barman is usually happy to recount the fabled history. in Holyrood Park to find some of the best views over Edinburgh. If you’re up for less of a climb or the weather starts to put a chill in your bones, there are simple trails around the Salisbury Crags with great views too. Returning to explore the narrow alleys called ‘closes’ that lead off the Royal Mile in search of warmth and sustenance; I wander down to the Grassmarket – a small open space that has played an important role in Edinburgh’s history. As the name implies, the Grassmarket used to be where

local farmers brought their hay, corn and seed to sell. It’s only when I find myself sitting in The Last Drop Tavern waiting for my lunch and see a noose in a frame and some other items displayed on the wall that I discover Grassmarket was also the location where crowds would gather to see public executions in the 15th and 16th century. In fact, the last drop is said to refer to a prisoner’s last drink before being hanged, but the more grim reference is to their own last drop through the scaffold trapdoor. A few doors down is a pub named after Maggie Dickson, a women who was hanged in Grassmarket and carted away in a coffin, but when it came time to bury the body, the funeral party heard banging coming from inside the coffin and quickly discovered she was still alive. She was pardoned and lived another 25 years. From lynching to loyalty, a much more uplifting tale is that of Greyfriars Bobby. Bobby was a Skye terrier that belonged to a night watchman who died and was buried in Grey Friars Kirkyard. His dog spent the next 14 years sitting on his master’s grave. Today, Greyfriars Bobby bar is a popular stop to toast the pup and rub the nose of the Greyfriars Bobby statue for luck.

Moving from the Old Town to the New Town, which is a stark contrast from the hilly winding alleys to the orderly masterpiece of urban planning that is characterised by neo-classical and Georgian architecture, you can’t miss the famous Balmoral Hotel with its landmark clock tower above Waverley Station. I walk through the Princes Street Gardens up to the imposing Scott Monument. I’m lucky to have clear skies, and decide to climb the 287 steps to the top of the Victorian Gothic tower built in the 1840s to honour the writer Sir Walter Scott. The circular stone staircase narrows swiftly as you ascend, and it’s a squeeze past other visitors on their way down, but the 360-degree view is impressive. This is the largest monument in the world erected to honour a writer. I’m humbled and tired. There is so much more to see in Edinburgh and so many more interesting tales. One visit isn’t enough. Fortunately there are all those festivals to come back for. So for now, it’s time to find another cosy pub. n

‫األحيــاء القديمــة إلــى التخطيــط المدنــي المنظــم والمنســق علــى‬

‫األخيــرة) بانتظــار وجبــة الغــداء‪ ،‬الحظــت أنشــوطة حبــل المشــنقة‬

FRANKFURT Historic cobbled streets and skyscraping capitalist architecture are just two characteristics of Germanyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s multifaceted financial powerhouse

As recently as 1945, the city with a financial district now known colloquially as “Mainhatten” (due to the name of its Main river and the similarities to New York’s infamous economic centre) was in ruins. Frankfurt felt the wrath of revenge against Nazi war atrocities and was levelled by Allied bombers. Step forward 70 years to the present day and the town has bounced back with gusto. Römerberg square’s timber-fronted houses, which had been destroyed in the war, have been restored and stand as a testament to the city’s architecture during its medieval pomp. Add the imposing skyscrapers of the financial district and Frankfurt’s thriving cultural scene to that admirable show of resilience, and it’s a destination with much to offer. In fact, Germany’s fifth-largest city is second only to Berlin when it comes to culture. The town might be known for being the location of Germany’s busiest airport and for its financial clout, but it’s not all businessmen and bankers. For every suit, you’re just as likely to encounter a student or a free spirit with an appreciation for Frankfurt’s famous literary and intellectual son, Goethe.

Often dismissed as faintly corporate and sanitised in comparison to its bohemian bigger brother, Berlin, one of the best ways to expel this stereotype is to amble around Kleine Bockenheimer Strasse for an evening. More commonly referred to as Jazzgasse (jazz alley), instead of Frankfurt’s eye-wateringly expensive restaurants, you’ll discover atmospheric jazz bars, with live music and an egalitarian and unpretentious crowd. WHAT TO DO Considering it’s the birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, it would be a little rude to ignore one of Germany’s favourite novelists (as well as statesman, playwright, poet, philosopher – the list goes on), and the polymath’s association with the

city. Luckily, the lovingly restored Goethe House, where the legendary brainbox was born, is also next door to a museum about the great man. More brain food can be consumed on the banks of the River Main at Museumsufer (Museum Embankment), so called because of the high concentration of museums and galleries lining both sides of the river. The most impressive is the Städel Museum, which celebrated its 200th birthday in March. The Städel’s comprehensive collection features Dutch Master Vermeer and works by Degas and Rembrandt. With its 95-metre spire, you’ll probably also notice Kaiserdom Cathedral. Frankfurt’s imposing redbrick, gothic-style building. Destroyed by fire in 1867 and again in the Second World War, it’s been faithfully restored each time and is open to the public on most days. To survey the city from a superior height though, take the elevator to the observation deck of Main Tower in the financial district, which is incidentally over twice the height of the Kaiserdom. You’ll enjoy the highest, and arguably the finest, view of the city’s dynamic skyline.

Frankfurt’s cheerfully chintzy Christmas markets do nothing to disprove this theory. Running until late December, the markets are some of the oldest of their kind in Germany. Pick up a stollen – a traditional festive fruitcake – at Hamburg’s most famous market, which is located outside Frankfurt’s Gothic Town Hall (in Rathausplatz) and features everything from handcrafted decorations to Printen cookies (a hard bread) from Aachen. In fact, Frankfurt is so adept at the markets, they’ve been successfully exporting them throughout Europe since the 1990s.

WHERE TO SHOP As the originators of the ubiquitous Christmas tree (the Bavarians have been decorating festive firs since the 16th century), Germans know a thing or two about the Yuletide period.

MID-RANGE 25hours Hotel The Goldman For a boutique experience, where rooms are designed individually, the playful Goldman, from the group that also runs a Levi jeans-themed property in the city, is fun and memorable. WHERE TO STAY BUDGET Meininger Hotel Frankfurt It may not be the city’s swankiest – or, for that matter, most spacious – accommodation, but if you’re looking for somewhere that reflects the trendier side of the budget segment, this isn’t a bad bet. PROGRAMME Anticipation is high for the 12th Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) – the region’s leading cinematic event

With more than 120 international movies, shorts and documentaries screening this month, thousands of cinephiles will be descending on Dubai to participate in what’s considered the Middle East’s leading film festival. It’s predominantly a line-up of Arab and low-budget or art house cinema, so if you’re looking for the latest instalment of Fast and the Furious or Transformers, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Last year, the festival showcased some of the year’s low-budget success stories and most acclaimed Oscar contenders, which included Eddie Redmayne’s Best Actor-winning performance in the Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything and satirical superhero comedy Birdman, starring Michael Keaton. What sets DIFF apart from competing global film festivals, though, is its promotion of Arabiclanguage films. One example is Short Film Palme d’Or winner from Cannes, Waves '98 – an animated piece following the aspirations of a young Lebanese man who’s become disillusioned with life in his segregated hometown of Beirut. The feature El Clasico, by Iraqi-born Halkwat Mustafa, is another highly anticipated premiere that tells the story of two Kurdish brothers in northern Iraq who set off on a journey of remarkable optimism, with the aim of meeting their idol, Cristiano Ronaldo. Ahmed Salim’s Arabic short, 1001 Inventions and the World of Ibn Al-Haytham is another notable

event as it’s the world premiere of the last big screen performance from legendary Egyptian actor Omar Sharif, who passed away in July. Yet where would the status of any global film festival stand if there wasn’t a touch of A-List glamour? Last year the festival was attended by English actress and star of The Devil Wears Prada Emily Blunt, legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle, Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor and star of US sitcom Frasier, Kelsey Grammer. This year, the festival will be attended by Hollywood A-lister Jake Gyllenhaal, who will be collecting Variety magazine’s International Star of the Year award.

ARABIAN NIGHTS One of the most popular categories at DIFF is The Arabian Nights Programme, which is a celebration of shifting regional perspectives that are a result of the economic, political and cultural atmosphere in the Arab World. According to the artistic director of the festival, Masoud Amralla Al Ali, the intention of the segment is to provide “a platform for Arab and international directors to make statements and challenge preconceptions about the region.” For 2015, cinema goers can look forward to the latest release from Oscar-nominated Palestinian director Hany Abu Assad, The

Idol, and a feature called Blind Sun, which follows the story of a migrant who’s living in Greece during the country’s economic crisis. WHEN TOM CRUISE CAME TO DIFF In 2011, the eighth edition of the festival made international headlines as it hosted the world premiere of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Cruise was accompanied on the red carpet by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. That year, the Top Gun

actor wasn’t the only major star in town, as he was joined by Bollywood big hitter Shah Rukh Khan and Hollywood’s Scarlett Johansson.

It follows the story of American journalist Dan Rather – a former anchor at CBS News. In 2004, Rather criticised President George W Bush’s military service record and published what transpired to be a false document to reinforce his claim, leading to his ultimate dismissal. The film is a study of the murky relationships between the US media, politicians and the truth. From the subcontinent, perhaps one of the most potentially controversial documentaries at the festival is The Battle for Banaras, directed by India’s Kamal Swaroop. It follows the electoral battle for the population of Banaras during the last parliamentary election. Referring to the strength of this year’s line-up, the Cinema of The World director Nashen Moodley stated that “with such a broad spectrum of highly anticipated films, the programme introduces audiences to films that they wouldn’t normally get to see in UAE cinemas.” n DIFF runs at various venues from December 9-16. dubaifilmfest.com

CINEMA OF THE WORLD HIGHLIGHTS The end of October saw DIFF announce more of its Cinema of The World programme. This year’s notables include the award-winning movie by Argentinian director Pablo Trapero, Clan, which picked up the Silver Lion gong at the 2015 Venice Film Festival. The movie follows the true story of the infamous and criminal Puccio family from Argentina who, in the 1970s, kidnapped a number of wealthy individuals and demanded large ransoms (as well as committing several grisly murders). Fans of The West Wing should snap up tickets to Truth, starring Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett.

‫ستكون دبي الوجهة المقصودة لآلالف من عشاق السينما‬

‫ومن الفعاليات الهامة التي تقام خالل المهرجان هو العرض‬

‫ليستمتعوا بخيارات واسعة يقدمها الحدث السينمائي الرائد في‬

‫العالمي األول للفيلم العربي القصير ألف اختراع وعالم ابن الهيثم‬

‫منطقة الشرق األوسط‪ ،‬حيث سيعرض أكثر من ‪ 120‬من األفالم‬

‫أهمية خاصة كونه يضم الدور‬ ‫من إخراج أحمد سليم‪ .‬ويأخذ الفيلم‬ ‫ً‬

‫واألفالم القصيرة واألفالم الوثائقية‪ .‬وتتصدر األفالم العربية وأفالم‬

‫السينمائي األخير للمثل المصري الكبير عمر الشريف الذي وافته‬

‫بشكل‬ ‫الميزانية المحدودة وأعمال السينما الفنية عروض المهرجان‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫عام‪ ،‬ولذلك من غير المتوقع أن يعرض أحدث حلقات أفالم اإلثارة‬

‫المنية في شهر يوليو الماضي‪.‬‬ ‫ولكن ما هي قيمة أو مكانة أي مهرجان سينمائي عالمي‬

‫مثل فاست أند فيوريوس‪ .‬إال أن دورة المهرجان في عام ‪2014‬‬

‫في ظل غياب المشاهير وسحرهم؟ سجل العام الماضي حضور‬

‫عرضت بعض األفالم المستقلة ذات الميزانية المحدودة التي القت‬

‫الممثلة البريطانية إميلي بلنت التي أدت دور البطولة في فيلم‬

‫نجاحاً كبيراً في ذلك العام ونافس بعضها على جوائز األوسكار‪.‬‬

‫ذا ديفيل ويرز برادا (الشيطان يرتدي برادا)‪ ،‬ومغنية التسجيل الهندية‬

‫شملت هذه الفئة فيلم ذا ثيوري أوف إيفريثينغ (نظرية كل شيء)‬

‫الشهيرة آشا بهولسيه‪ ،‬وممثل بوليوود أنيل كابور ونجم مسلسل‬

‫الذي يروي قصة حياة ستيفن هوكينغ‪ ،‬وفاز الممثل إدي ريدمين‬

‫فريزر الكوميدي األمريكي كيلسي غرامار‪ .‬وفي هذا العام سيحضر‬

‫بجائزة األوسكار في فئة أفضل ممثل؛ كما ضمت تلك النخبة فيلم‬

‫المهرجان الممثل جيك جيلينهول‪ ،‬أحد أشهر نجوم هوليوود الذي‬

‫الكوميديا السوداء عن البطل الخارق بيردمان (الرجل الطائر) من‬

‫فاز بلقب "النجم العالمي لسنة ‪ "2015‬الذي تقدمه مجلة فارييتي‪.‬‬

‫يطولة مايكل كيتون‪.‬‬ ‫ولكن في الحقيقة ما يميز مهرجان دبي السينمائي الدولي‬

‫برنامج ليال عربية‬

‫عن المهرجانات العالمية األخرى هو الدعم ألفالم اللغة العربية‪.‬‬ ‫وكمثال عن تلك األفالم‪ ،‬هناك الفيلم القصير موج ‪ 98‬الذي فاز‬

‫يتمتع برنامج ليال عربية بشعبية واسعة في إطار مهرجان دبي‬

‫بجائزة السعفة الذهبية في مهرجان كان‪ ،‬وهو فيلم رسوم متحركة‬ ‫نتيجة لواقع الفصل‬ ‫يتتبع طموحات شاب لبناني أصيب باإلحباط‬ ‫ً‬

‫بالتغير الملموس في المناخ‬ ‫السينمائي الدولي‪ .‬فالبرنامج يحتفي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الثقافي والسياسي واالقتصادي للعالم العربي‪ .‬وفقاً للمدير‬

‫العرقي في مدينته بيروت‪ .‬ومن المتوقع أيضاً تقديم العرض األول‬

‫الفني لـمهرجان دبي السينمائي الدولي‪ ،‬مسعود أمراهلل آل علي‪،‬‬

‫للفيلم المرتقب إل كالسيكو من إخراج هلكوت مصطفى المولود‬

‫يهدف البرنامج لتوفير "منصة للمخرجين العرب والعالميين‪ ،‬للتعبير‬

‫في العراق‪ .‬يسرد الفيلم قصة أخين كرديين في شمال العراق‬

REGAINING ITS CULTURAL

MOJO?

An influx of galleries and a $15 million museum revamp are shining a light on Lebanon’s cultural capital

Following its closure in 2007, Beirut’s famous Sursock Museum finally reopened its doors this year. The museum is housed in a grand villa that, like the city itself, is an amalgamation of European and Middle Eastern principles. The ambitious seven-year task involved excavating the ground to add four subterranean stories, housing everything from paintings and historic photos to a cavernous 166-seat theatre and a library. It’s a fairly strong statement of intent. But what does this say about Beirut and, in particular, its cultural scene? You’ve probably heard that Beirut used to be called the “Paris of the Middle East” – a bohemian and progressive bastion of culture – a liberal beacon in an otherwise conservative part of the world. Times have changed, however. Gulf state petrodollars are incubating world-class arts and culture scenes of their own, while battle-scarred Beirut is still reeling from a prolonged conflict. Despite past hardships, Beirut is a city that still wears its heart firmly on its sleeve. The famous statue in the central Martyrs’ Square still bears the bullet holes from the country’s long civil war – a historical and social reminder for future generations. When the hostilities finally ended, the governmentbacked Solidere company was tasked with the city’s reconstruction. Downtown Beirut now contains

the Beirut Souk shopping development – an imposing illustration of the capital’s resurgence, complete with Louis Vuitton, Armani and Burberry stores, and wealthy-looking people socialising in cafés. Redevelopment has not been without its detractors though. Some residents believe that the gentrification of the city is at the cost of its identity. Narrow streets with ornate Venetian and Ottomaninspired buildings are being replaced with swanky modern flats and restaurants. Yet wander further east and you’ll find yourself in Gemmayzeh. Rue Gouraud, which runs through the heart of the area, is packed with trendy but affordable restaurants, alternative nightspots and independent shops and boutiques. The hotchpotch of architecture is still strikingly evident and the slightly faded glamour, reminiscent of historic Europe, is still alive. Alongside Gemmayzeh, you’ll find the hip neighbourhood of Mar Mikhael. Venues such as Papercup – a trendy store that sells arty books and magazines, as well as being a café where 20-somethings confer over coffee, are indicative of a wider cultural scene. In fact, Papercup is just one of the dozens of examples of Beirut’s burgeoning independent-minded and arty soul in the city’s progressive districts.

As the magnificent Sursock Museum reopens after a massive revamp, Chiranti Sengupta chats to Nora Razian, the museum’s head of programmes and exhibitions, about its place in Beirut’s cultural life

What does the reopening of the museum mean to the contemporary art landscape in Beirut? Considering that Sursock is Beirut’s only museum of modern and contemporary art, it is critical for us to support local artistic productions, while showcasing works of international artists. We also want people to come to the museum to exchange ideas and learn about the history of local art. It is a public space for discussion and debate on art and the discovery of new things. How does Sursock plan to promote the local art? We wish to do it through running exhibitions, collecting works by local artists and commissioning new projects. Can you tell us a bit about the museum’s mustattend shows on view? We are currently running two exhibitions on the city of Beirut. While the main show, Regards sur Beyrouth: 160 ans d’images, explores the evolution the city from 1800-1960 through 250 rarely seen works from private collections, the other exhibition, titled The City in the City, presents recent works by artists and designers reimagining contemporary Beirut. Both the exhibitions are on view until January.

Why did it take eight years to reopen Sursock? We had to dig extensively to add new floors to the building and increase the museum’s total surface area. As the museum is located in a century-old building, we were careful to preserve the original architecture. The digging for the renovation project took many years. We have also completely revamped the interiors of the museum, while upgrading the museum with new technologies.

Perhaps the most laid-back version of old Beirut can be experienced in the studenty Hamra district. With the city’s prestigious American University of Beirut at the heart of the community, you’ll come across street art and cheap bars and restaurants, with all of the character and charm that originally earned the city its Paris comparison. Head to one of the many live music venues throughout the city and you’ll hear everything from DJs and metal to folk and, on a recent visit, even a mandolin player. With an underground and distinctly mainstream embracing of music and the arts (just visit the Beirut Exhibition Centre to witness the scale and diversity of the contemporary art scene) it’s overwhelmingly evident that Beirut has its cultural mojo firmly intact. ‫والفنون‪ .‬كان من الواضح والمؤكد أن السحر الثقافي الذي‬

‫الواقع‪ ،‬بيبر كاب هو مجرد واحد من عشرات األمثلة عن ازدهار‬

‫اشتهرت به بيروت مازال سليماً معافى‪ .‬ويبقى السؤال إن كانت‬

‫التفكير المستقل وروح الفن في أحياء المدينة التقدمية‪.‬‬ ‫لعل منطقة شارع الحمرا الحافلة بالحضور الطالبي هي أكثر‬

‫يوم من األيام‪n .‬‬ ‫قد خسرته بالفعل في‬ ‫ٍ‬

‫المناطق التي حافظت على طابع بيروت القديم‪ .‬فبسبب وجود‬

‫تسير طيران الخليج رحالت يومية إلى بيروت‪.‬‬

‫الجامعة األميركية في بيروت في قلب تلك المنطقة‪ ،‬حيث‬

‫سحرها الثقافي؟‬ ‫يوفر انطالق عدد كبير من المعارض الفنية وإنفاق ‪ 15‬مليون دوالر‬ ‫أمريكي مؤشرات مضيئة للحياة الثقافية في العاصمة اللبنانية‬ ‫بقلم بيتر فيلي‬

‫وأخيراً سيفتح متحف سرسق أبوابه مجدداً ‪ ،‬بعد إغالقه في العام‬

‫الخليج تحتضن الفنون العالمية وتطور المشهد الثقافي في بلدانها‪.‬‬

‫‪ .2007‬يقع المتحف في بيروت في فيال كبيرة تمثل روح المدينة‬

‫ولكن بغض النظر عن آالم الماضي‪ ،‬فإن بيروت ال تخفي‬

‫بدمجها ما بين المبادئ األوروبية والشرق األوسطية‪ .‬لقد تطلب‬

‫معاناتها؛ ما زالت ثقوب الطلقات النارية ظاهرة على التمثال الشهير‬

‫هذا المشروع الطموح ‪ 7‬سنوات من العمل شملت حفر األرض‪،‬‬

‫في ساحة الشهداء في وسط المدينة كذكرى تاريخية واجتماعية‬

‫وذلك إلضافة أربعة طوابق تحت األرض ستضم كل شيء من‬

‫لألجيال القادمة‪ .‬بعد انتهاء الحرب كلفت الحكومة شركة‬

‫اللوحات والصور التاريخية الى مسرح بسعة ‪ 166‬مقعد ومكتبة‪ .‬إنه‬

‫سوليدير بإعادة بناء المدينة‪ .‬يضم اآلن وسط مدينة بيروت مجمع‬

‫يعبر كل هذا‬ ‫مؤشر واضح يعكس الرؤية المستقبلية‪ .‬ولكن كيف ّ‬

‫أسواق بيروت للتسوق – وهو مثال واضح على انتعاش المدينة‪.‬‬

‫عن بيروت وبالتحديد عن مشهدها الثقافي؟ من المرجح أنكم قد‬ ‫سمعتم أن بيروت كانت تسمى بـ "باريس الشرق األوسط"‪ -‬معقل‬

‫تضم األسواق أشهر المتاجر العالمية مثل لويس فويتون وأرماني‬ ‫وبوربري ومقاهي تجمع األثرياء والطبقة المتوسطة‪.‬‬

‫بوهيمي تقدمي للثقافة ‪ -‬أو منارة متحررة في منطقة تتسم‬

‫ولكن عملية إعادة التطوير لم تتقدم دون معارضة البعض‪.‬‬

‫بالطابع المحافظ‪ .‬ولكن الزمن قد تغير‪ .‬فحين كانت بيروت تعاني‬

‫فيعتقد بعض سكان بيروت أن تحسين المدينة هو على حساب‬

‫من جراح الحرب األهلية التي انتهت في عام ‪ ،1990‬كانت دول‬

‫هويتها‪ .‬فلقد تم استبدال الشوارع الضيقة والبيوت القديمة الجميلة‬

Tell us about the international championships that you participated in recently? AB: I took part in the X30 Challenge in the UAE this year, where I raced for the first time using an IAME X30 engine. I also test-drove a Formula Gulf 1000 in Dubai recently and it was a fascinating experience. TB: So far, I have participated in four international races, all in Europe, including the CIK-FIA Under-18 World Championship and Academy Trophy and the X30 World Final. This boosted my confidence to compete against some of the world’s best drivers in the junior category.

How long have you been racing? AB: I have been professionally racing for four years now. TB: I started to take racing seriously three years ago. Our aunt, Hanan Mohamed Omar, who is well known around the Bahrain International Circuit, introduced us to motorsport.

What are your next goals? AB My next aim, after moving up from karts, is to enhance my mental and physical strength to a level where I can comfortably take up the challenges of Formula racing. TB: I hope to compete in Formula 4 races around the world.

What has been the most challenging part of being a motorsport driver? AB: It is very challenging to find sponsors to take our careers to the next level. There’s nothing more devastating than a lack of funds threatening to stall your dream career. How many hours do you train every day and how do you balance your studies and training? AB: I usually train for three to four hours a day. It is not easy for a racing driver to balance his studies and training. I try to finish my studies before I rush to practice, but I often study late at night after the training session. I live by two sayings: ‘Find what you love and let it kill you’ and ‘Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’ TB: I usually train for four to five hours, two to three days a week, before and during the karting season. I often miss school as I travel a lot for the races. I need to work very hard to catch up with all the missed lessons when I am home.

“The event is very significant for the regional aviation sector,” says Ahmed Al Nemah, Acting Undersecretary for Civil Aviation Affairs, Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, member of the Supreme organising committee “The region has seen considerable investment in the aerospace industries with new and expanding airports including Bahrain, Riyadh and Doha. Furthermore, recent IATA passenger forecasts indicate that Middle East passenger traffic is expected to increase by 5 per cent every year. BIAS provides a spotlight for the sector and generates business opportunities to support this growth in demand,” he adds. Major highlights of BIAS The 2016 show will see a number of new features including a hosted buyer programme and a twoday conference on the theme of Air Transport in the 21st century. Key topics will be airports and airlines, air traffic management and the passenger experience. Additionally, delegates from the Manama Air Power Symposium, which takes place the day before the show, will also be attending BIAS. This will see over 30 air force chiefs and some 200

Serving as a commercially focused airshow that draws on the Kingdom of Bahrain’s strategic location as the gateway to the Gulf, Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS) brings together some of the top names in the aerospace industry. Held under the patronage of HM King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, and under the supervision of HH Shaikh Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, HM the King’s personal representative and chairman of the Supreme Organising Committee of BIAS, the fourth edition of the show will see participation from Britain, India, Turkey, Russia and the USA, and from the MENA region. Companies taking part in the event include Gulf Air, BAE Systems, Boeing, Airbus, Rosoboronexport, TAG Aeronautics, Finmeccanica, Otakar, Bahrain Airport Company, Kuwait Airlines, Qatar Airways and Saudi Airlines.

officials from the GCC and around the world, as well as approximately 200 representatives from leading industry partners, academics, and the international press in attendance. The Exhibition Feature Hall, which was introduced at the last airshow, will be returning this year. For companies in the Feature Hall, the focused number of exhibitors provides them with higher visibility in comparison to the larger aerospace exhibitions in the region. The civil and military delegation programme is always an important part of the show, where meetings are arranged between participants and delegates. “At the forthcoming show, we are expecting a strong military participation from our Middle Eastern neighbours as well from the UK and the US. The civil programme is expected to see government ministers from other Arab states as well, and heads of civil aviation authorities and airline chiefs,” says Al Nemah. The 2014 event saw 120 companies participating in the show and confirmed orders worth US$2.8billion. This included a US$1.2 billion Bombardier deal for 16 new aircraft, a US$100 million Gulf Air/Rolls-Royce contract and an order from Bahrain Airport Company to the tune of US$3.2 million for new passenger boarding bridges. “With Gulf Air looking to replace some of its fleet and work currently underway on the Airport

To date BIAS’ aircraft line-up includes the Russian Knights, a JF17 and C130 from the Pakistani Air Force and Turkish Aircraft Industries will bring the ATAK helicopter. Commercial Aircraft will include an Airbus A380, A350 and an executive jet from Qatar Airways, and a Boeing 737 from Texel Air and from the military side you can expect top-of-the-range fighters aircraft, surveillance and many helicopters.

Modernisation Program – an ambitious venture to modernise and transform Bahrain International Airport (BIA) into a world-class facility by building a new passenger terminal – we are expecting to see deals relating to these taking place at the show,” says Al Nemah. “It’s not just the deals from which we measure the event’s success, it’s the longer-term business relationships that are fostered at the show through the networking and engagement events we host for our participants.” Commenting on the events for the public, Al Nemah says, “While we are still planning and confirming our public attractions, we will have a host of events to keep both young and old entertained. In 2016, we will increase our public visitor capacity so that even more people can enjoy the flying display and on-ground attractions.” n

Originally‬‬ ‫‪from Austin, Texas, Jack has been sent‬‬ ‫‪by his company to Southeast Asia to‬‬ ‫‪work on a project that will bring clean‬‬ ‫‪drinking water to the country. ‫ذاق مرارة اليتم صغيراً حين توفي والده وهو في الثالثة من عمره‪ .‬وعاش رحلة‬

‫‪Upon losing his father at age three, Mohammed went with‬‬ ‫‪his widowed mother and two siblings to a shelter called Ribat‬‬ ‫‪Abu-Zinadah; a Yemenite hostel for orphaned families. With‬‬ ‫‪the financial help of the soon-to-be crown prince Faisal, her‬‬ ‫‪children were accepted into one of the orphan schools. Abdu‬‬ ‫‪began singing and performing while still studying to be an‬‬ ‫‪engineer in the early 1960s. In 1963, he graduated from the‬‬ ‫‪Institute of industrial Jeddah. He was selected for a post in‬‬ ‫‪Italy in the shipbuilding industry, but as fate would have it, he‬‬ ‫‪was convinced by Abbas Ghazawi to give his music career a‬‬ ‫‪shot. He never made it to Rome, instead he flew to Beirut, and‬‬ ‫‪began collaborating with artists and launched his music career.‬‬

‫‪Abdu's music was based on the older generation's ageless‬‬ ‫‪talents and songs of maybe a thousand years of heritage, but‬‬ ‫‪nevertheless, he was credited with preserving these songs‬‬ ‫‪called mawrouth (the inherited songs) without much change in‬‬ ‫‪their build-up or musical arrangements. His Chaabyat albums,‬‬ ‫‪released through his label Voice of Al-Jazeerah in the 1990s,‬‬ ‫‪were his attempt at documenting that old tradition. These‬‬ ‫‪jalsat (sittings) were when his talent crystallised: his oud was‬‬ ‫‪the instrument he talked to almost spiritually, in a manner‬‬ ‫‪never seen before in any Arab singer other than Farid al-Atrash,‬‬ ‫‪Baligh Hamdi and Talal Maddah. In admiration, Abdu sang one‬‬ ‫‪of Baligh's compositions Sert Al-Houb (Love Story) for Umm‬‬ ‫‪Kulthum on her 69th birthday.‬‬

‫من الفقر والعوز حتى أنه أقام فترة مع والدته وشقيقه في نزل يمني ألسر‬ ‫األيتام يدعى رباط أبو زنده‪ .‬ودخل محمد عبده مدرسة لأليتام مع أخيه بفضل‬ ‫منحة مالية قدمها الملك الراحل فيصل (كان حينها ولياً للعهد)‪ .‬وفي بداية‬ ‫ستينيات القرن الماضي بدأ محمد عبده مسيرته الفنية مع عالم الغناء وهو طالب‬ ‫في المعهد الصناعي بجدة‪ ،‬الذي تخرج منه عام ‪ .1963‬في ذلك الحين توجه‬ ‫محمد عبه مع بعثة سعودية إلى إيطاليا ليختص في صناعة السفن‪ .‬ولكن رحلته‬ ‫تحولت من روما إلى بيروت‪ ،‬في نقلة نوعية من بناء السفن إلى بناء المجد‬ ‫الفني‪ ،‬وكان ذلك عن طريق عباس فائق غزاوي الذي كان من ضمن مكتشفي‬ ‫صوت محمد عبده عندما غنى في اإلذاعة في برنامج "بابا عباس" عام ‪ 1960‬م‪،‬‬ ‫وبارك هذا االكتشاف الشاعر المعروف طاهر زمخشري‪.‬‬

‫تعرف على الملحن السوري محمد محسن الذي أخذ من الزمخشري كلمات‬ ‫"خاصمت عيني من سنين" ليغني أغنية خاصة به بعد أن اعتاد على أداء أغاني‬ ‫من سبقوه ومنها أغنية "قالوها في الحارة‪ ..‬الدنيا غدارة"‪ُ ،‬سجلت األغنية وعاد‬

‫فنان العرب ألرض الوطن ليدخل عالم الغناء بقوة وتعرف على العديد من الشعراء‬ ‫أمثال إبراهيم خفاجي الذي كان له تأثيراً واضحاً على حياته الفنية‪ ،‬والموسيقار‬ ‫طارق عبد الحكيم الذي قدم له لحناً رائعاً من كلمات الشاعر المعروف ناصر بن‬ ‫جريد بعنوان "سكة التايهين" التي قدمها محمد عبده عام ‪ .1966‬ووجد محمد‬

‫عبده نفسه في حاجة إلى القيام بالتلحين لنفسه‪ ،‬رغم ألحان طارق عبد الحكيم‬

‫وعمر كدرس التي صقلت موهبته لكنه خاض التجربة وكانت أغنية "خالص‬ ‫ضاعت أمانينا‪ ..‬مدام الحلو ناسينا" التي قدمها على العود واإليقاع دون أي توزيع‬ ‫موسيقي‪ ،‬وكان نجاح هذا اللحن تشجيعاً له على خوض التلحين الذاتي أكثر وأكثر‪.‬‬
