Last month, we welcomed the Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS) 2016 – held under the patronage of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Gathering global companies in the aerospace industry, high-level military and civil delegations as well as aerobatic display teams, with modern and historic aircraft gracing the skies over the Sakhir Airbase, the Airshow also gave trade visitors on the ground the opportunity to meet and conduct business with key industry players. Families also enjoyed a festival of fun with a host of attractions including children’s rides and games, flight simulators, educational activities and a heritage handicrafts village. Gulf Air made some critical announcements during the Airshow including an order of 45 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus in deals worth a combined total of USD7.6 billion. The orders consist of 16 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, 17 Airbus 321NEO and 12 Airbus 320NEO aircraft. These orders provide Gulf Air with the requisite expansion capabilities for the airline’s future network requirements over the next 20 years, helping us maintain one of the youngest fleets in the region while building upon our award-winning reliability and on-time performance. Gulf Air will continue to improve its fleet modernisation process and overall passenger experience – all with you in mind! We look forward to serving you in 2016 and wish you a great journey ahead.

BAHRAIN ANNUAL FINE ARTS EXHIBITION 42 Date: until 20 March Venue: Bahrain National Museum In continuation of the trajectory of the arts scene in Bahrain, the Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, held under the patronage of the Prime Minister, HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, since 1972, has evolved into a popular gathering of artists, from all over the country, all eager to showcase their work. The exhibition encourages artist contributions to be as spontaneous and uninhibited as possible to allow for a wide-ranging artistic and cultural debate, and full artistic expression is showcased unhindered for local audiences. Acting as an innovative forum for discussion across the chosen forms, from calligraphy to surrealism and abstract and modernist representations to more traditional cultural expressions, the exhibition represents different schools of thought, perceptions, backgrounds and experiences. SYDNEY

Few places in the world do summer like Sydney. Jenny Hewett looks beyond the obvious sights and explores the city’s most vibrant hoods

With its clear skies, sultry sunsets and proximity to some of the world’s best beaches, summer in Sydney is king. The two go together like cheese and Vegemite, like meat pies and tomato sauce, like Aussies and abbreviations. While those in the Northern Hemisphere are busy thawing out frozen toes at this time of year, Sydney turns the heat on all the way through March. By that time, its residents are near-delirious, energised from months spent outdoors soaking up the natural landscape that Sydney is so famous for. Sun-kissed and salty, Sydneysiders ooze a stirring spirit that captures everything that makes this city so irresistible. Relentless in their thirst for the next wave, the next scorcher (colloquial for extremely hot days where the beach is the only reprieve) and the next barbecue, locals make the most of the city in summer and so should you. But once you’ve ticked off the Harbour City’s biggest highlights, namely the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Bondi Beach and Manly Beach, you’ll want to unravel Sydney’s true character and seek out the city’s most up-and-coming areas.

Avoid the uppity crowds and health-crazed hipsters of Bondi in the east and head to this once-sleepy surfing town on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Just beyond the tourist-laden Manly Beach, Freshwater is coming into its own, with a number of small bars, independent boutiques and cool cafés. Where Bondi can feel like a lesson in pretentiousness, Freshwater has an unassuming, local vibe as well as excellent surf. Call it ‘Freshie’ if you don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb. The area is a mix of tradesmen or ‘tradies’, surfers, suits and local business owners, all sharing one thing in common: their love of the water. Sheer cliffs line the small, cove-like beach at each end and – as with most

Sydney frolicking spots – there’s an eight-lane ocean pool that makes for some slick Insta-shots. For foodies, award-winning Sydney restaurant Pilu at Freshwater sits right on its sandy edge, serving up all manner of Sardinian-inspired creations. If you’re less ‘cashed-up’, to use the Aussie term, go casual at The Kiosk, dishing up paninis and egg rolls to ravenous surfers for a margin of the price. When the sun falls, locals descend on popular small bar Stowaway, where the decor is partpirate-ship, part-Western-themed saloon. Drinks are creative, there’s dancing on tables on Thursday nights and the hot wings are some of the best I’ve tasted. Pretty soon you’ll come to learn that breakfast is a Sydney tradition and rustic café Bent Fork does a mean peanut butter and avo (avocado) toastie and chocolate and honey milkshakes. Redfern The gentrification of Sydney’s most infamous suburb – and the property boom that followed – has been a hot topic of conversation in Sydney in recent years. Redfern and its surrounding areas have blossomed into Sydney’s coolest address. As a result, property is highly coveted and poverty and crime have been driven out. Its transformation is controversial, but there’s no

a thing) and get their caffeine fix at one-stop-shop Cleveland Salon and Café, which combines cool cuts with good coffee. Here in Redfern, your opportunity to mingle with locals lies in one of the many corner bars, such as Black Penny, located on the edge of Redfern and Surry Hills. It’s relaxed almost to a fault, drinks are cheap, there’s mural art on the walls and hip-hop playing through the speakers.

While the area still retains some of its original character, hardened city slickers are now integrated with ultra-cool urbanites in reflector shades and felt hats eagerly updating photos of their bucket list orders from one of the many cafés in the area. Paramount to any other is the Death by Donut burger at Milk Bar by Café Ish, which comes stuffed between two cinnamon doughnuts. Built in a former 19th-century railway yard in the bordering suburb of Eveleigh, multi-arts centre Carriageworks hosts everything from K-Pop parties to the Symphony Sydney Orchestra, performance art and an organic farmers’ market every Saturday. To take a nostalgic bite out of most Aussie’s childhoods, head to the buzzy Devon on Danks, in bordering Waterloo to sample soft-serve ice cream paired with hot salty fries. Meanwhile, modern men can stock up on beard gloss (yes, it’s

Located on the fringe of a handful of universities in the hip Inner West, Newtown has an undeniably indie vibe and its residents are as expressive as they are nonchalant. Students sporting pastelhued hair share the streets with musicians, artists and creatives – and then there’s the Sydneysiders who make the journey here just to eat. Despite popular belief that the Aussie diet consists of Vegemite and sausage rolls, the city’s multicultural heritage makes it home to some of the most authentic South East Asian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine outside of those regions. An al fresco drink is a rite of passage in this city and colourful locals can be found sipping beverages in the garden of the edgy Newtown Hotel most afternoons, where the main spectacle is a sofa sprouting grass on the roof. February 8 sees Chinese people around the world celebrate their New Year. The occasion is based on the lunar calendar and therefore changes each year, through a 12-year cycle. The Chinese calendar associates each year with one of 12 animals. This year it’s the year of the monkey. Unfortunately, if you happen to be born in the

year of the monkey, the Chinese believe that you will endure 52 weeks of bad luck unless you perform certain tasks to minimise your misfortune. These include wearing a splash of red, adorning yourself in jade and – somewhat less practically – always facing a south-westerly direction to turn things around for the better.

Traditionally, on New Year’s Eve, red envelopes full of money are handed out to children, to symbolise prosperity. The amount should always total an even number, as in Chinese culture, odd numbers are deemed unlucky. Other gifts are also exchanged, sweets are consumed and people gather to perform lion dances for good luck. The festivities take place over 15 days, running from New Year’s Eve until the beautiful spectacle of the Lantern Festival. Rituals include the cleaning of

houses in preparation for the New Year, said to bring good fortune, and placing red paper decorations in the windows of your home. Firecrackers are also lit to ward off evil spirits. Each of the 15 days following New Year’s Eve has a special significance, such as the second day, when married women traditionally return to the home of their parents, and the fifth day, where participants eat dumplings in dedication to the deity of wealth. While China is the home of New Year, it is celebrated throughout the world, from Malaysia and Thailand to Indonesia and the Philippines. In fact, with one in five of the planet’s population participating in the celebrations, hundreds of millions of people will be wishing one another a “Xin Nian Kuai Le!” this month. n

After becoming the youngest British chef ever to achieve two Michelin stars, aged just 26, Tom Aikens’ career continued to skyrocket. Having worked with some of the best in the business, Aikens now has his name above the door of four successful Tom’s Kitchen brasseries in London. With another branch in Istanbul and an additional restaurant in Dubai called Pots, Pans and Boards, Aikens’ food clearly has a universal appeal. Throw in a restaurant in Hong Kong called The Pawn and it begins to become clear why Aikens is credited with reinventing and reinvigorating British cuisine. So, what can we expect from Aikens when he visits Taste of Dubai on March 10-12 and what’s his thinking behind launching a restaurant in the Middle East last year?

Why did you choose to work on restaurant projects outside the UK? “It is very exciting to work in another country as I get to discover a new culture, work with new producers and adapt to different tastes and products. Of course it is far from easy, but I believe it is a very positive challenge in a chef ’s career.”

Chef Tom Aikens talks about his favourite foodie haunts in his native London

You’re appearing at Taste of Dubai. How do you think the foodie scene is evolving in the emirate? “Given that many great chefs are coming to Dubai, the quality and the consistency of restaurants are constantly improving. It is definitely becoming a foodie destination.” n

You’ve got experience in French cooking but you’re most famous for your Britishinspired dishes… “While I find great inspiration from classic British and French recipes, I always try to innovate, incorporating unusual products and cooking methods from the countries where I have restaurants – Istanbul, Hong Kong and Dubai.” How does your restaurant in the Middle East differ from your Tom’s Kitchen branches in London? “It is a sharing-concept restaurant. I was looking to recreate the informal atmosphere of a large and happy family meal by sourcing vintage kitchenware from British and French flea markets and decorating the walls and shelves of the restaurant. Every menu item in the restaurant is served in a family-style pot, pan or on a board for guests to share, hence the name. With the food, I’ve twisted some of my

Make your way to the covered local market, where vendors sell everything from bread to zucchini flowers, strawberries and even decently priced contemporary leather heels. While you’re in Testaccio, check out MACRO Museum, set in an old slaughterhouse, it’s dedicated to Italian contemporary art and is home to some impressive sculptures.

The closest thing you’ll get to farm-to-table in Rome, Palatium on Via Frattina supports growers in the city’s Lazio region and all the produce and beverages are locally sourced. More contemporary than you might expect in a city with so much history, here you can rub shoulders with Italian businessmen as you fix your gaze on modern dishes such as sheep’s cheese and fresh black pepper pasta. A few blocks away, light and airy organic restaurant Ginger offers another take on contemporary Italian cuisine, with options including light salads, Italian baguettes and octopus. Monti, Rome’s hippest hood, is breaking out as the top spot for gelato, small cafés and more unusual Italian delicacies such as the anchovy and avocado bruschetta at Gli Angeletti inside the area’s hip main square, Piazza della Madonna dei Monti. When the sun rises, make a beeline for Full Monti café to find a cracking cappuccino. While Il Gelatone, a few blocks up on Via de Serpenti is filled with overloaded slabs of gelato in flavours of Nutella, lemon basil and coconut. Some are even sugar-free for health-conscious grazers. If it’s tradition you’re after, join the ranks of Michelle Obama and dine at the relaxed Maccheroni in Piazza delle Coppelle. The drinks are affordable and the decor is as rustic as the food, with everything from gnocchi to succulent veal saltimbocca. It’s hard to get a table, so book well in advance to secure a spot outside, where peoplewatching is all part of the experience.

Also, check out the cosy Ottoman decor of Kiyi Turkish restaurant, where you can enjoy a drink at the ornately tiled bar or relax and recline in the comfortable majlis. There’s also a private dining majlis reserved for parties, with a tasselled chandelier to soften the glow. A belly dancing show on Friday evenings enhances the Turkish setting.

Being the parents of two toddlers, a spa date at the weekend is a rare luxury. So when my husband and I decided to spend an hour at the luxe Rixos Royal Spa, it felt unreal, but was surprisingly refreshing. TREATMENT: Our therapists escorted us to the hammam room

and asked us to lie down on a heated marble stone. Then they poured warm water on us and vigorously scrubbed our bodies to remove dead skin cells. Next came the surprising bit: they squeezed soap bags out above us, creating a thick layer of warm foam. The feeling of being wrapped in a blanket of foam was very relaxing. The Chocolate Indulgence 75 minutes

The Pearl Spa is the ultimate in swanky relaxation and, thanks to the steam room, heated whirlpool, ice fountain and rain showers, no stone of relaxation and pampering is left unturned. TREATMENT: When I think of chocolate, the word “detoxify”

isn’t the first thing that comes to mind, but with this particular Valentine’s Day-friendly treatment it would seem that chocolate is good for me. After a footbath, I lay down on the table and the therapist exfoliated my body with a mixture of apricot kernel and royal jelly to remove any excess skin, then I was invited to take a shower. For the main event, warm chocolate with detoxifying oils was brushed on to my body and then I was wrapped up for 20 minutes while receiving a very soothing head and neck massage. Afterwards I was served hot chocolate. WHY WE LIKED IT: It’s a chocolate wrap – what’s not to like! ‫?‪How did you discover graphology‬‬ ‫‪I wanted to understand people better. While we sometimes‬‬ ‫‪have conflicts with others, we don’t know exactly what‬‬ ‫‪they mean or want. After studying the Myers-Briggs Type‬‬ ‫‪Indicator [a personality-assessment tool] for three years,‬‬ ‫‪I met Abdul Jalil Al Ansari, from the International Academy‬‬ ‫‪of Handwriting Analysis in Bahrain. He studied graphology‬‬ ‫‪in France and brought his knowledge back to Bahrain.‬‬

If they are willing to listen, I will tell them if I’ve‬‬ ‫‪noticed a few negative points, but some people get angry‬‬ ‫‪when they’re criticised and accuse graphology of being a‬‬ ‫‪superstitious science.‬‬ ‫‪What characteristics would the handwriting of‬‬ ‫?‪a leader have‬‬ ‫‪There are two main characteristics in this case. Her parents‬‬ ‫‪were both actors who ran a workshop for aspiring‬‬ ‫‪writers and performers until their divorce in 1971. After‬‬ ‫‪graduating from high school in 1985, Roberts moved to‬‬ ‫‪New York City to live with her sister, Lisa, who, along with‬‬ ‫‪Roberts's brother, Eric, was pursuing an acting career.‬‬ ‫‪Roberts landed a guest appearance on the television‬‬ ‫‪series Crime Story (1986-88). ‫ذاق مرارة اليتم صغيراً حين توفي والده وهو في الثالثة من عمره‪ .‬وعاش رحلة من‬

‫‪Upon losing his father at age three, Mohammed went with‬‬ ‫‪his widowed mother and two siblings to a shelter called Ribat‬‬ ‫‪Abu-Zinadah; a Yemenite hostel for orphaned families. With‬‬ ‫‪the financial help of the soon-to-be crown prince Faisal, her‬‬ ‫‪children were accepted into one of the orphan schools. Abdu‬‬ ‫‪began singing and performing while still studying to be an‬‬ ‫‪engineer in the early 1960s. In 1963, he graduated from the‬‬ ‫‪Institute of industrial Jeddah. He was selected for a post in‬‬ ‫‪Italy in the shipbuilding industry, but as fate would have it, he‬‬ ‫‪was convinced by Abbas Ghazawi to give his music career a‬‬ ‫‪shot. He never made it to Rome, instead he flew to Beirut, and‬‬ ‫‪began collaborating with artists and launched his music career.‬‬

His Chaabyat albums,‬‬ ‫‪released through his label Voice of Al-Jazeerah in the 1990s,‬‬ ‫‪were his attempt at documenting that old tradition. These‬‬ ‫‪jalsat (sittings) were when his talent crystallised: his oud was‬‬ ‫‪the instrument he talked to almost spiritually, in a manner‬‬ ‫‪never seen before in any Arab singer other than Farid al-Atrash,‬‬ ‫‪Baligh Hamdi and Talal Maddah. In admiration, Abdu sang one‬‬ ‫‪of Baligh's compositions Sert Al-Houb (Love Story) for Umm‬‬ ‫‪Kulthum on her 69th birthday.‬‬

‫الفقر والعوز حتى أنه أقام فترة مع والدته وشقيقه في نزل يمني ألسر األيتام يدعى‬ ‫رباط أبو زنده‪ .‬ودخل محمد عبده مدرسة لأليتام مع أخيه بفضل منحة مالية قدمها‬ ‫الملك الراحل فيصل (كان حينها ولياً للعهد)‪ .‬وفي بداية ستينيات القرن الماضي بدأ‬ ‫محمد عبده مسيرته الفنية مع عالم الغناء وهو طالب في المعهد الصناعي بجدة‪،‬‬ ‫الذي تخرج منه عام ‪ .1963‬في ذلك الحين توجه محمد عبه مع بعثة سعودية إلى‬ ‫إيطاليا ليختص في صناعة السفن‪ .‬ولكن رحلته تحولت من روما إلى بيروت‪ ،‬في‬ ‫نقلة نوعية من بناء السفن إلى بناء المجد الفني‪ ،‬وكان ذلك عن طريق عباس فائق‬ ‫غزاوي الذي كان من ضمن مكتشفي صوت محمد عبده عندما غنى في اإلذاعة‬ ‫في برنامج "بابا عباس" عام ‪ 1960‬م‪ ،‬وبارك هذا االكتشاف الشاعر المعروف طاهر‬ ‫زمخشري‪.‬‬

‫تعرف على الملحن السوري محمد محسن الذي أخذ من الزمخشري كلمات‬ ‫"خاصمت عيني من سنين" ليغني أغنية خاصة به بعد أن اعتاد على أداء أغاني من‬ ‫سبقوه ومنها أغنية "قالوها في الحارة‪ ..‬الدنيا غدارة"‪ُ ،‬سجلت األغنية وعاد فنان‬

‫العرب ألرض الوطن ليدخل عالم الغناء بقوة وتعرف على العديد من الشعراء أمثال‬ ‫إبراهيم خفاجي الذي كان له تأثيراً واضحاً على حياته الفنية‪ ،‬والموسيقار طارق عبد‬

‫الحكيم الذي قدم له لحناً رائعاً من كلمات الشاعر المعروف ناصر بن جريد بعنوان‬ ‫"سكة التايهين" التي قدمها محمد عبده عام ‪ .1966‬ووجد محمد عبده نفسه في‬ ‫حاجة إلى القيام بالتلحين لنفسه‪ ،‬رغم ألحان طارق عبد الحكيم وعمر كدرس التي‬

‫صقلت موهبته لكنه خاض التجربة وكانت أغنية "خالص ضاعت أمانينا‪ ..‬مدام الحلو‬ ‫ناسينا" التي قدمها على العود واإليقاع دون أي توزيع موسيقي‪ ،‬وكان نجاح هذا‬ ‫اللحن تشجيعاً له على خوض التلحين الذاتي أكثر وأكثر‪.‬‬
