Education In the 2000s, there were many programs and acts passed to better education in the United States. In 2002, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was passed. This act re-emphasized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which was passed in 1965 and strived to provide equal opportunities for all students. Similarly, the NCLB Act’s goal was to close student achievement gaps by providing everyone with equal opportunity to succeed in schools. Its major points were: to ensure that disadvantaged students achieve academic proficiency, to allow school districts flexibility to choose how to spend their funds to improve achievement in students, and to emphasize programs and practices in schools that have been scientifically proven to be effective. To continue, in the 2000s, online learning came to be and provided many students who do not have access to schooling or external help with those things. Websites for all ages came to be, helping students of all income pools from all around the globe have access to education. Finally, in 2007, it was ruled in the Supreme Court that race cannot be a factor in assigning students to high schools. This meant that it ended the law that was put in place that stated that among other factors, a school cannot have less than 15% of the enrolled be African American or more than 50%. This rule ended many integration programs and led to a more just school enrollment system.

Culture In America in the 2000s, the culture became a lot more technology-obsessed, with a flurry of new inventions taking over the marketplace. Iphones, iPads, and Ipods took over America and were seen in every corner. Companies like Apple and Samsung grew exponentially, with millions upon millions buying their newest products. People spent hours a day looking at their phones: playing games on them, using social media, texting, and more. Many times, technology took over social interaction, with people preferring to use their technology rather than talk to others. If you went anywhere, you could see people on their phones, and it took over a great part of American culture. The culture also became based around social media, with Facebook in particular becoming very popular. People from all over the world were connected via the Internet and could share posts, talk to each other, etc. through technology. Social media also took over the role of normal interaction for many people, with some becoming addicted to the social media and the technology. While advances in technology do have their benefits and have helped connect people, many believe that having too much technology and spending hours upon hours looking at our devices isn’t good. In the 2000s, this obsession with technology and social media in our culture really got started, and it hasn't stopped since.

Sports The 2003 Fiesta Bowl game had one of the most controversial calls in football history. The game was between the Miami Hurricanes and the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Miami Hurricanes were up 24-17 in OT. It was fourth down on the five yard line for the Buckeyes and they had to score or they would lose the game. The Buckeyes threw the ball in the corner of the end zone but it was dropped because the Miami defender knocked the ball out of the Ohio State receiver’s arm. This was a fair play and Miami started celebrating and both sides went to shake hands when 5 seconds after the play was over the referee threw the penalty flag. The call was pass interference but referees all over the country disagreed with the call, saying it was fair and Miami should have won.

Music The 2000s decade was an iconic one in the history of music, with many of the styles and artists we listen to today rising to prominence. New styles such as techno became popular in this decade, and many of music’s most popular songs were written. By far the greatest star of this decade was Michael Jackson. Through his incredible dance moves and hit songs like “Thriller” and “Billie Jean”, he became famous all over the world, being dubbed “The King of Pop”. Other iconic artists of the 2000s include Prince, Madonna, Britney Spears, Shakira, Michael Jackson and many others. Probably the most famous musical group of the era was the Black Eyed Peas, a hip-hop group who wrote energetic songs. The music world suffered a great tragedy in June 2009, when Michael Jackson, regarded as the greatest musician in the world, suddenly died due to an overdose in Los Angeles. Heartbroken fans mourned his death, saying goodbye to Michael and his music. Some of the most popular music styles of this era were pop, rap, and hip-hop, with a b decline in the rock and roll of the 80s and 90s. Music became more modern, with more computer effects being added to enhance the music. The way we listen to music Madonna also changed, with inventions like earbuds and the iPod, as well as apps like Spotify making music more accessible wherever you go. Overall, music remained an integral part of society in the 2000s, being enjoyed by millions of people.

Way we Lived During the 2000’s the way we lived was drastically different compared to the calm peace of the 1990’s. Young people delayed marriage longer than ever before, permanent singlehood increased, and divorce and remarriage continued to rise during the first decade of the century. Economically, the situation got worse as well. During the 2000’s, the difference between the American people grew wider and the rich became richer and the poor became poorer. Americans increasingly went to Fast Food restaurants and the problem with child obesity started during the 2000’s. Also, music was changing too, and remained an important part of how we lived. Iconic figures such as Michael Jackson, Prince, and more had millions of fans enjoying their music. Many new innovations also appeared during the 2000’s. Companies like Apple, Samsung and other major companies like Google appeared. They created products such as the IPhone, computers, and many more. People spent more hours a day looking at their phones, Ipads, and other technologies. Life in the 2000’s is similar to what we experience today, but even more changes and innovations have been made since then.

Government and Politics
In 2000, the contested Presidential Election Between George W. Bush and Al Gore was a big issue. This was the most controversial presidential race in the history of America. Bush won the electoral college in a tight race. In 2001, a great tragedy hit America. The World Trade Center and the Pentagon was attacked on September 11, 2001. This was a calamity and almost 3000 people died. The government responded to this tragedy by saying they were going to find the people that were responsible for this and they built monuments so that Americans could remember the heroes and the deaths of this day. Next, in 2003, the disastrous Iraq War started. The Iraq War was started based on false intelligence and irresponsible management. The U.S spent over 2 trillion during the war. In 2005, the natural disaster of Hurricane Katrina hit America and the government responded horribly. The government failed to respond in time and failed to help the American people. Furthermore, in 2008 the collapse of Wall Street and economic recession happened, and it worked its way through the American Economy. Bankruptcy, unemployment, and housing was affected by the collapse of Wall Street and how the government again failed to help the people and avert the crisis. In 2009, the first Black President, Barack Obama, was inaugurated and it was a big stepping stone for the U.S.

Law and Justice In 2000, the Bush and Gore case was a famous case that changed the course of U.S history. Bush and Gore was one of the tightest elections in the country's history. The votes were close and the winner of the election came down to Florida. The vote in Florida was close as well but the 25 electoral votes went to Bush. Bush then had a total of 271 electoral votes of the 270 he needed. Gore then filled to make a recount of the votes in Florida because it was so close. The recount in Florida started but the Supreme Court decided it was unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment‘s Equal Protection Clause. They ruled that the Florida Supreme Court's recount order was unconstitutional because it granted more protection to some ballots than to others. This made all the recounts stop and the election go to Bush. It was estimated that Bush would have won in Florida and would have won the election.

Foreign Affairs The foreign affairs of the United States during the 2000s were based around 2 presidents: George W. Bush and Barack Obama. The first major foreign policy challenge came in the form of the 9/11 attacks. George Bush responded to these attacks by promising to go after countries who helped these terrorists. He then outlined his goals for the country to deal with the attacks, promising that it would recover strongly from this act of terror. The US would get involved in two wars in response to these attacks, in Iraq and US Troops in Afghanistan Afghanistan. President Bush began dealing with the post-9/11 era by forming a war cabinet including his most trusted advisors. The CIA was then able to identify the perpetrators of the attacks as the terrorist group Al Qaeda and its leader, Osama Bin Laden. These terrorists formed an alliance with another terrorist group called the Taliban, making it more difficult to fight the perpetrators of the attacks. One of the first military actions that Bush took was to begin bombing Al Qaeda bases in Afghanistan, and then to begin sending American troops to Afghanistan to fight Al Qaeda and the Taliban. The US, helped by the Northern Alliance, a group fighting the Taliban, was able to push them out of Afghanistan in the following years and force Osama Bin Laden to flee into Pakistan. The focus then shifted to finishing off remaining terrorists and finding Bin Laden in Pakistan. However, this proved to be difficult, and Bin Laden would not be found for years to come. The far more controversial war of the Bush presidency, however, was the war in Iraq. Many in the Bush administration, who had taken part in the Gulf War. felt that Saddam Hussein’s regime should be ousted from power, and felt that this should be part of the US response to 9/11.
16 The administration wanted support for the war, and the claim they used to back this was that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and planned to use them against the US and its allies. This later proved to be a lie, with no such weapons ever found, leaving the American public to question the legitimacy of the motives for the war. The administration also claimed that a war in Iraq was crucial to respond to the 9/11 attacks, but no evidence was found connecting Iraq and Saddam Hussein to the attacks. In the end, he was successful in getting Congress to pass a resolution allowing him to go to war with Iraq if he found it necessary. Saddam Hussein refused to give up power, choosing a confrontation with the US. American and British forces then began bombing Baghdad, starting the Iraq War. The US and its allies were quickly able to overthrow Saddam Hussein, but this would only make Iraq more unstable over time due to the power vacuum that was created. Iraq would descend into violence and chaos, with terrorist groups rising, and Bush was widely criticized for the mess that he created in Iraq. The country was able Saddam Hussein to regain some stability as US troops created coalitions with Iraqis, and US troop numbers in Iraq began getting scaled back. Bush would then establish a good relationship with the new government of Iraq, giving the US a key ally in the fight against terrorism. After the beleaguered and unpopular Bush left the presidency in 2009, President Obama came in, who offered a new approach to foreign policy. He ran on a campaign of opposition to Bush’s policies and the Iraq War, saying “What I am opposed to is a dumb war”. He promised redeployment of many US troops out of Iraq, with some returning home and others being sent to confront terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, despite these efforts, both the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars still drag on today. Barack Obama

Domestic Affairs 9/11 Around 7 months after Bush’s election in 2001, the Twin Towers were attacked. When the Twin Towers were built in 1973, they were an instant landmark and restored New Yorkers’ hope for New York’s future, which at the time, looked dark. The 9/11 attacks were not the first terror attacks on the towers, as they were attacked in 1993 with a truck-full of explosives blasted a five-story deep hole below the basement parking garage of the building. Only six were killed, despite the enormity of the attack. On September 11, 2001, there were four planes that were hijacked by the terror group al-Qaeda. Two of the planes successfully crashed into both of the Twin Towers. However, there were two more planes, one headed for the Pentagon, which also was a successful attack. However, the fourth plane, headed for Washington D.C., was taken back by the passengers of the plane and crash landed in a field in Pennsylvania. As a result of 9/11, the nation was in shock that terrorists were capable of attacks like this. There were many heroes on 9/11, firefighters and other first responders risking their life by running into the toxic fumes and collapsing buildings to rescue as many people as possible. Despite this, there were a total of 2,996 deaths.

Domestic Affairs Barack Obama and the 2008 Financial Crisis Barack Obama ran for president in 2008 against John McCain, was victorious, and ran for a second term against Mitt Romney, again victorious. When Obama took office for the first time on January 20, 2009, he was faced with a difficult challenge: the Financial Crisis of 2008. This financial crisis is considered to be the biggest one since the Great Depression. This was caused by banks loaning too much money to those who probably could not repay the loan. The majority of the loans went to the housing market, and caused the price of housing to soar. Then, when homeowners could not repay their loans, the banks decided to limit lending, causing prices to drop, while more and more people sell their houses to repay their loans, but since the prices dropped, the earnings from selling the house are still not enough to repay the loans. When Obama came into office, he knew he had to do something. Following the crisis, Obama passed the a bill that cut taxes and increased aid for the unemployed until the market got back on its feet. Also, under Obama, the government took control of Chrysler and GM, saving them from bankruptcy and therefore saving three million jobs. This chart shows the amount of money banks loaned compared to the amount of money in the economy. The difference between the red and the green represents the debt.
