Education in the 2000’sn

In 2002 president George W. Bush passed the No Child Left Behind Act. This act highlighted the education in the 2000’s. The act makes states require to test students in reading and in math in grades 3-8. Once in high school all students are expected to meet or exceed state standards in reading and in math. The main focus of the No Child Left Behind Act is to close the student achievement gaps by providing all children with a fair and equal opportunity to obtain a high-quality education. The act has four pillars in between the bill. The first pillar is Accountability: to ensure those students who are disadvantaged to achieve academic growth. Flexibility: Allows school districts flexibility in how they use federal education funds to improve student achievement. Research-based education: Emphasizes educational programs and practices that have been proven effective through scientific research. Parent options: Increases the choices available to the parents of students attending Title I schools.

Film and Theatre

Following “Batman Begins” in 2005, Warner Bros. Pictures presents us with “The Dark Knight”, the movie that takes superhero tragedies to a whole new level. This is the movie that really shows the excellent acting of Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, and in my opinion, is the best superhero movie ever made. This movie appeared on more critic’s top ten lists than any other movie in 2008, appearing in 287. This movie was also named the best film of 2008 by 57 different critics. This amazing film was dedicated to the actor who played the Joker, Heath Ledger, who died on January 22, 2008, six months before the release of this movie.

Food

In the 2000s, people were really fascinated with bacon, and they put it on almost everything. There was even a bacon milkshake! Everyone was really into miniature cupcakes in the 2000s. Popular cupcake shops located in New York and Los Angeles like Crumbs and Sprinkles expanded and multiplied, and by 2009, it wasn’t uncommon to stumble upon a little ship that sells miniature cupcakes. Apparently, America really likes small food, because another food item that America was obsessed with are sliders, or miniature hamburgers. It got popular after famous fancy restaurants started to promote them.

s t r o Sp The 2007 video controversy regarding the super bowl winners the New England Patriots shocked the world. The New England Patriots were punished by the league for videotaping New York Jets defensive coaches signals from an unauthorized location during a September 9, 2007 game.

Videotaping the opposing teams coaches is not illegal in the NFL but there are designated areas allowed by the league to do such taping. Because the Patriots were instead videotaping the Jets coaches from their own sideline during the game it was illegal. 10

Way we lived The 2000s were a decade where the way Americans lived changed drastically, probably more drastically than ever before. During the 2000s there were some inventions that changed the world for ever and especially the standards of living. Inventions such as the Iphone, skype, youtube, and social media like twitter and facebook changed the way americans live forever. These inventions made life for Americans a lot easier and more fun, because now people can watch videos online, stay in touch with friends easier, and have a portable phone with touch screen. These inventions had many positive impacts but also many negative impacts on people's lives. People were now getting addicted to their devices and spending a lot more time inside. The obesity rates have been higher than ever because food is getting unhealthier with fast food chains growing, and with people doing less exercise because of their devices.

Government/politics

In 2000, it was a gruesome year for president, as the recount in Florida halted who really became president. It was truly an election like no other. It was one of the closest race in political US history. The race was so close that Florida had chosen to do a recount to determine the winner. But it was decided by Congress that Bush would become the president instead of opponent Al Gore. But it didn’t even matter. Studies have shown that recount or not, Florida would’ve had enough electoral votes to put Bush in as president.

Law and Justice

Because of the attacks of 9/11, Congress has enacted the Homeland Security act, and President Bush signed it into law in November of 2002. The Homeland Security Act’s purpose was to try to prevent any more terrorist attacks and to minimize the danger and damage that happens whenever there is a terrorist attack. This act provides the secretary of Homeland Security with the authority to direct and control investigations that require access to information needed to investigate and prevent terrorism

Domestic Affairs The financial crisis of 2007 or the global crisis is considered by many economist to have been the worst financial crisis since the Great depression in the 1930. The crisis in the mortgage market developed into the full-blown international banking. The collapse of the investment bank Lehman Brothers on September 15, 2008 highlighted the domestic crises. Due to this crisis the Dodd-Frank act was enacted in the US after the crisis and its motto was “promote the financial stability of the United States.

Foreign Affairs The 2000s was a decade full of foreign affairs for the US. The invasion consisted of 21 days of major combat operations, in which a combined force of troops from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Poland invaded Iraq and deposed the Ba'athist government of Saddam Hussein. One of the biggest foreign affairs from the 2000s was the invasion of Iraq. The US invaded Iraq for many reasons, such like 9/11 which they believed was partly caused because of Iraq and Saddam Hussein. Hussein continued to sponsor terrorism, and he also killed thousands of his own people. The US invaded Iraq to stop Saddam Hussein and Iraq from more worldwide disasters. The Invasion of Iraq was controversial, but the US did accomplish the goal that they came for. The US was able with its allies to kill Saddam Hussein. Some people disagree that this was the right thing to do, but others think it was a great and successful invasion.

Foreign Affairs Recently Venezuela has been doing terribly and a lot of these troubles that we have today started in the 2000s. Over the past decades there have been thousands of protests and many thousands of people protesting against the government. Hugo Chavez was born in 1954 and died in 2013 and then Maduro took over. Hugo Chavez got to power fairly, but later he started to abuse his power, and now the Venezuelan government is totally corrupt, and Maduro is also believed to have gotten power in an unfair way. Chavez started as the leader of the revolution against the government before that was also hated. Once Chavez's party beat the old government he took control of the country and he soon became just as bad as the old government and probably even worse. Chavez started ruling in 2002 and was leader until 2013 when he died. Chavez was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and lived with cancer for 2 years until he died of the disease in 2013 in Caracas Venezuela.

Celebrity Gossip

Has Lance Armstrong been using doping all along? There has been more and more evidence lately that Lance Armstrong used doping to win all the titles that he won. Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer and he didn't have a big survival rate. Many people doubted that he would ever cycle again, let alone win 7 tour de frances in a row. After Armstrong won all these races many people became very skeptical about all his success and there have been rumors about him using doping for a few years. Lance has been denying that he uses doping saying "If you consider my situation: a guy who comes back from arguably, you know, a death sentence [i.e., Armstrong's 1996 cancer diagnosis and treatment], why would I then enter into a sport and dope myself up and risk my life again? That's crazy. I would never do that. No. No way.— Lance Armstrong, 2005
