Education in the 60’s Education in the 60’s was very different than education nowadays. For starters, Students and teachers did not write essays on two thousand dollar computers they used the classic pen and paper. They wrote on chalk boards, and used maps and diagrams. Another thing that was included in 1960’s education was segregation. Classes were divided by color, everything was divided by color. Even water fountains. They treated blacks unequally and most of the time teachers did not teach blacks as they did white students. Towards the end of the 1960’s segregation began to die down, schools began to combine white and black students in classes, Everyone would slowly but surely become equal. Overall education in the 1960’s was unequal and unfair, but also the end of something awful. Thanks to the landmark case, Brown vs School Board. , it was illegal to have segregated schools. This era of racism and imbalance will forever be known and remembered. Pg. 3

Fashion in the 60’s Fashion in the 60’s was a big part of this decade. The 60’s featured a huge amount of distinct and groovy trends. It was a decade that broke many fashion traditions. Popular clothing at that time culottes, go-go boots, and box shaped pvc dresses. Women mostly wore funky tights and pantyhoes or tall knee socks. Women would also wear high neck button up blouses. Low heel and flat shoes of all sorts like, mary janes, t-straps, slingbacks and oxfords. Men’s fashion did not really change as much as women's fashion did but ties, belts and lapels got wider, collars got longer and wider and a modified version of the bell bottom called “flared” became popular. Fashion in the 60’s became a revolution. This decade would surely be the start of a new lifestyle. Hippies…

Food including Astronaut ice cream was created, and was as tasty as it is today! Snack companies started expanding their horizons and trying new flavors Soon pringles and Lays started distributing salt and vinegar flavors alongside barbecue and ranch flavor. The flavors were originally created by Joe “Spud,” in Ireland, the trend quickly spread to America. Companies invented different varieties of drinks, and presentation became a new area of improvement, diet coke and pepsi were successful in the market and were put in attractive cans.

Culture in the 60’s At the beginning of the 1960s, many Americans believed they were standing at the dawn of a golden age. On January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy became president of the United States. His confidence that, as one historian put it, “the government possessed big answers to big problems” seemed to set the tone for the rest of the decade. However, that golden age never materialized. On the contrary, by the end of the 1960s it seemed that the nation was falling apart. Some young people “dropped out” of political life altogether. These “hippies” grew their hair long and practiced “free love.” Some moved to communes, away from the turbulence that had come to define everyday life in the 1960s. Parts of the hopeful ‘60s remained.. The era’s legacy has certainly become a permanent part of our political and cultural lives.

Way we lived It seems that the 1960s would have a fun and interesting everyday life for the Americans at the time. But this was not the case. People living in the 1960’s experienced a larger rate of being in a single relationship to date. Unemployment was also high. 71 percent of Women between the age of 30- 34 were jobless. And 80 percent of them had a husband and children.

Government Politics During the civil rights movement Eisenhower helped and wanted to end the policy of racial segregation but problems had still occurred. Later on 1960, JFK was elected for President. Boycotts were occurring and Martin Luther King was arrested for starting a protest in Atlanta. Kennedy has helped the Civil Rights movement and has since many african americans do not have good jobs, he has given high-positions in administrations. Law and justice The !960’s were the most important time to date for racial equality and the fight against segregation. People wanted change and they wanted it fast. Boycotts, marches, and protests were nationwide and spreading from streets to papers, to the minds of politicians. The rallies Angered the police patrols who were bias against blacks. An example of a crackdown on civil rights movements was bloody thursday, attack dogs, fire-hoses, and even beating them directly with batons. The 1960’s Supreme court was run by Earl Warren. Therefore it was called the Warren Court. The warren court wanted nothing more than to help with civil rights cases and bring justice to discrimination and segregation. Acts were passed that punished public displays of hate and cracked down on hate crime rates. The public was looking much better than it had earlier

Foreign affairs The Bay of Pigs was on April 1961, Cuban exiles landed on the southern part of Cuba where their plan was to overthrow Fidel Castro. This invasion was a disaster, and Kennedy took full responsibility for it. There were also some conflicts with Vietnam during the 1960’s where Nixon would send U.S. soldiers to Vietnam and would help the Vietnamese (South Vietnam) and fight the Vietcong (North Vietnam) from becoming communist. The U.S. believed in the “Domino Effect” where communism would keep spreading every time a country would fall into communism. The plan of the U.S. unfortunately did not work. In 1961-62, there was also a Cuban Missile Crisis where the U.S. had a cold war against the U.S.S.R. Since the Soviet Union was communist, it had backup from Cuba and Fidel Castro. Cuba was giving threats and they could have launched a missile at the United States any time. Many Americans were frustrated, but fortunately Cuba never did.

The building of the Berlin Wall also occurred in 1961 as well. After WWII occurred, the United States, France, Britain, and the Soviet Union all split Germany into four sides. Each country helped repair its side and then they would host an election. Their plan was to start a democracy and when someone would be elected they would leave. The problem was that the Soviet Union stayed and disagreed wanting to keep their side communist. The west side was where the democratic party of Germany was. The east side was where the Soviet Union had its communism and where many people suffered. The Berlin Wall was built by the Soviets and separated families. The Berlin Wall Airlift was when the U.S. brought supplies in airplanes. Years later, the wall got very rusted and people broke the Berlin Wall and had freedom..

He launched the New Frontier which supported elders and those in need. It helped to rebuild urban areas and aid education. National defense was improved on a larger scale as well. After his mostly successful time in office, he was shot and killed by Lee Harvey Oswald. The bay of pigs attack was a failure and brought shame to kennedy.
