Segregation In Schools
During the 60's around the country people were fighting for the desegregation of schools. This is because in the past White and African American students had to attend different schools. This put African American students at an absolute disadvantage because in almost all segregated schools the schools for the White had better teachers, more resources, and just better education in better. The desegregation of school reached a national level having a case taken to the Supreme Court in a case called Brown vs. Board of Education. This Supreme Court case came up when a class action suit was filed against the board of education of the city Topeka, Kansas. When taken to the Supreme Court the judges ruled that state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. The judges stated that this violated the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment. After this case segregation was made illegal all throughout the country.
Football and Basketball Grow Fast During the 1960’s, two very popular sports in the United States grew even more inside and outside the country. It spreaded to countries such as Canada, and gained worldwide attention.
The first Super Bowl was disputed January 15, 1967 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. The Packers won the first two Super Bowls.
The NBA during the 1960s had all its attention on one only team, the Boston Celtics. Led by Bill Russel, they won 9 out of the 10 NBA Championships during the Sixties.
The United States Foreign Affairs The US in the sixties was very involved in the affairs of foreign countries, and as a result, the foreign affairs, with events such as the Vietnam War, Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Bay of Pigs Invasion being big highlights of the sixties. The most major of the events was the Vietnam War, in which in 1968 the United States escalated its involvement by sending more troops and weapons to support the south. This showed that the US’s intentions in Foreign Policy was to do as much as possible to stop the spread of Communism. This is also exemplified by the Bay of Pigs invasion, in which the US sent cuban exiles to attempt to overthrow the Cuban government. Another event, the Cuban Missile Crisis, was defined by the wielding of exceptionally good US foreign policy, which most likely prevented a nuclear war between the US and the Soviet Union.
Book Review
Green Eggs and Ham was a wonderful children's book written in 1960’s. This book was written by the Pulitzer Prize winning author Doctor Suess. The book tells the story of a comedic character Sam-I-am who pesters an unnamed character to try a plate of green eggs of ham. After pages of pestering Sam-I-am finally convinces the unnamed character to eat the plate of green eggs and ham and he loves it. This book was loved among children and is one of the more successful children's books of all time, ranking in top 10 Doctor Suess books. I recommend that all parents go and buy this book for their children.

Food
Many different food trends took off in the 60’s. One of these major trends was fondue. Fondue is a form of cooking meat and cheese. It took off in the 60’s because it is a very fun way to cook and it makes delicious meals. One restaurant created later in the 70’s was created entirely based off of fondue, being the melting pot. Another very popular food trend in the 60’s was meatballs with grape jelly. This trend did not last long after the 60’s but in almost every house it was eaten weekly. The last major food trend in the 60’s was Shrimp Cocktail. This food trend is still around today. This plate was served with fresh shrimp and a cocktail sauce.
Law and Justice During the 60’s, there was a lot of civil unrest, and with this came many conflictions involving the law and then shortly after the Supreme Court got involved, and around 15 important cases were made for Civil Rights alone. In the 1960’s the law was increasingly seen as a white male police officer who was racist and corrupt. The Supreme Court was seen as the solution and many arguments were ended at the Supreme Court. On the right and below this column, are series of pictures that show such things.
The Brit Beatles
One of the most well known and best band of 60’s and all time was the Brit Beatles. This was a band of 4 men that originated in Liverpool, UK. The band consisted of the lead vocalist and pianist Paul Mccartney, the vocalist and rhythm guitarist John Lennon, the lead guitarist George Harrison, and lastly the lead drummer Ringo Starr. The beatles came to the United States on February 7, 1964 and immediately took not only the country but also the world by storm and soon become a huge cultural force. They were considered such a massive cultural force because they greatly changed the way in which pop music was listened to besides mass amount of people. The beatles were a huge hit among young people introducing them to a new and very interesting kind of music.
Fashion Trends During the 1960’s, fashion trends were all about style and attitude. By many, it was considered fairly “bi-polar”, as it came from the conservative and boring style from the 1950s into colorful tie-dye shirts around the middle and end. Women began wearing skirts a very shorter than they did during the 1950s. Men's fashion however, did not have such a drastic change as women's. During that time men wore clothes somewhat like they do nowadays, polos, sweaters, slacks, etc. One famous example of this is JFK. He loved the style.
Way We Lived During the sixties, the classes were all over the place, with everyone having different averages of living. A large portion of the population was also homeless, due to the hippie movements, and also because jobs in the 60’s were very selective. There was the typical, happy family like in the photo below, and then there was the street laden hippie movement which inspired clothing and lifestyles that were supposedly unfavorable to regular families. Such aspects were torn and colorful clothes that were loose on the body, and a poor or homeless lifestyle. The rich lived in a luxurious lifestyle with servants and were unlikely to be seen in public.

MLK Jr. Leads Civil Rights Movement During the 60’s the civil rights movement was greatly on the rise. The people who led this movement were called the Civil Rights Activists. This movement started with one very brave activist, Rosa Parks. One day she was on a bus after a hard long day of work, and she refused to give up her seat to a white man causing her to be sent to jail. This caused a massive boycott of buses from all african american workers, which eventually led to equality on buses. After this event Martin Luther King jr. was on the uprising of popularity because of his outstanding speaking skills and plan of nonviolent protest. One of MLK’s most popular speeches of all time was his speech, “I Have a Dream. In this speech he talked about how he dreamed his ideal society to be, with all races no matter the color having equal rights. This movement eventually ended with laws and amendments being passed that helped equalize the rights of all races.
JFK Blown Away One huge event that occurred during the 1960’s was the assassination of John F. Kennedy. JFK was assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. At the time John F. Kennedy was campaigning in Texas because he believed that he would need to win the state, to win his reelection race. While riding in a car right after turning off Main Street, JFK was struck by bullets in the head and neck, causing him to immediately be sped off to the nearest hospital. By the time JFK reached the hospital there was almost nothing that the doctors could do to save his life. Later that day Lee Harvey Oswald was found and arrested for the assassination of the president. The next day while Oswald was being transported to county jail, a local nightclub owner, Jack Ruby, shot and killed Oswald at point blank range. Nobody knows the reason for either of these assassinations and because of that it is still unknown today.
Todd and Taylor are a thing? Mike Todd and Elizabeth Taylor are a possible couple! They were found together just three days after she divorced Michael Wilding. It has been said that Mr Widing is too old for her and he is possibly gay.
Elizabeth Taylor decided to trade Wilding for a hot tempered, determined, and exciting Mike Todd. According to the actress, he was very “hot” too. Mike Todd still died in a plane crash later on in his life, filling Taylor with grief. She still got married to Todd’s good friend later on, which she probably regretted till she died.
Government And Politics The 1960s government in the United States was a great challenge for its presidents. The Vietnam War was on the rise and the cold war just made it harder for each president that came and went. The first president during the 60s was JFK. He was the 35th president of the United States and was inducted into office in 1961 and served until November 1963 when he was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. Lyndon B Johnson served until 1969 inheriting the Vietnam War from JFK. He had great involvement in the war. He was reelected after assuming office for JFK after his death. It was a Democratic Party reign throughout the decade.
