EDUCATION
By: Nico Gurdjian
In the world of education during the 2000s many events happened in the early years that paves a way for bigger, and better schools. Google finally provided a fingertip access to all types of information resources like Wikipedia that replaced library encyclopedias. This revolutionized the whole concept of student research. Also because of 9/11 in 2001 schools responded with stricter security policies, entrance door buzzers, and cameras. Another big phenomenon was the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling. The seven-book series,Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows had just come out in 2007, created a new generation of readers and gave the printed word a second chance with children. A huge invention that have spanned and advanced onto the 2017 society was the SMART Board. One-to-one laptop system was mostly in rich private schools but with this introduction of SMART Boards in the early 2000s many schools bought this "interactive whiteboard" technology and much more affordable one-per-classroom model.
fASHION Many people would way that the 2000’s was a global mash up with fashion. Trends saw the fusion of previous styles, global and ethnic clothing, as well as the fashions of many music based subcultures. Hip hop fashion generally was the most popular among young people, followed by the retro inspired indie look later in the decade. In the early 2000’s, many mid and late 1990’s fashions remained fashionable around the globe, while simoun times introducing newer trends. Although the 2000’s did not have one particular style, they revived clothes primary from the 80’s and 90’s. Some of the leading fashion designers between 2000-09 included the late Alexander McQueen, Vera Wang, Christian Louboutin, Vivienne Westwood, and Karl Lagerfeld. The top supermodels were, Kate Moss, Gisele Bundchen, Adriana Lima, etc. Some people think that the trends going around this time were horrendous and that these 10 years have been some of the worst years fashion has seen, but others still dress with this style to this day. One of the most popular trends was black blazers. People of both sexes found a way to incorporate this into their outfits, both casual and fancy. Towards the beginning of this decade, the Juicy Couture Tracksuits were very in, people wore them to award shows and on a casual day out. In the later years, it was almost maturing in a sense that celebrities started to wear nicer items to the bigger events.
Craves of the ‘00s
By: Rachel Simmons
The 2000’s were all about food. Here are the most popular craves of this decade. In 2000, Carrie Bradshaw ignited the cupcake trend when she hit New York City’s cupcake mecca Magnolia Bakery in the show Sex and the City. Over the next several years, popular New York and Los Angeles based cupcake shops expanded into multi state franchises. Local cupcakeries sprout up on street corners and by 2009, the number of cupcake cookbooks reached to what publishers call a “deluge”. 2001 was the rise of Rachael Ray. In the fall of 2001, America met accessible Rachael Ray as 30 Minute Meals debuts on Food Network. She branded EVOO which stands for extra virgin olive oil. The Food Network helped propel a new generation of effervescent, telegenic chefs to multimedia celebrities over the course of the decade. In 2002, comfort food was introduced. After the county suffered one of its worst disasters on September 11, 2001, Americans turned to meatloaf, chicken pot pie, mac n cheese, pizza and all foods that are comforting. In 2003, people said goodbye to carbohydrates. The South Beach Diet by cardiologist Arthur Agatston was published in 2003 and it remained on the bestseller list for more than 96 weeks in a row. Agatston’s carb reducing plan was just one facet of the low carb craze that swept the nation.
2004 was the end of super sizing. Super Size Me, director Morgan Spurlock’s documentary film in which he undergoes a self imposed experiment to eat fast food exclusively for one month, made its way to theaters. In the movie, Spurlock’s Mcdonald’s diet leads to a weight gain of nearly 30 pounds, a major hike in his cholesterol level, and other effects ranging from liver damage to sexual dysfunction. McDonald’s ended it’s super sizing menu that year. 2005 was the year of coffee. Starbucks achieved world domination as the number of its coffeehouses surpassed 10,000. Organic foods started to sweep the nation in 2006. The organic food movement went mainstream in a big way when Wal-mart began to stock quality organic products. Annual sales of organic food hit $24 billion by 2009. In 2007, Michael Pollan’s novel was released which revealed the scary truth behind industrial food production. It encouraged Americans to source food from local farms. In 2008, more than 2,800 whole grain products were introduced to the market. In the wake of 2009’s economic recession, families tightened their budgets by packing brown bag lunches and preparing home-cooked meals. 61% of 6,708 people who polled in the survey revealed they cooked more at home as a direct result of the economic downturn. 2010 was the year of food trucks. All over the country, food tricks dominated the restaurant scene with forward-thinking flavors.

Wearing flip flops was very in style. Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman were in love and were the couple of the year. Halle Berry became the first black actress to win an Oscar for “Best Actress” for her role in “Monster’s Ball”
“Fast Food Nation” scarred everyone but it prevented no one from eating burgers. TV became infinitely weirder because of “Adult Swim” on Cartoon Network. Middle parts, fur coats and charcoal eyeliner became cool because of Miss Margot Tenenbaum. The world fell in love with Amelie.

The 2000’s, was a huge year for film. The movies released during this time were filled with action and thriller. People like Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood, really shined this time around. The highest grossing film was Mission Impossible. A story about a spy who had his identity stolen to assist a criminal is his work. Because of the films popularity, Tom Cruise became one of the most highly respected actors of this decade.
Films like American Psycho got tons of attention from critics. This hit horror film was about a young man named Patrick Bateman. He works by day on Wall Street earning a fortune. At night he descends into madness, as he experiments with fear and violence. The great Christian Bale worked very hard to get into character and build suspense. He got over one million dollars for his earning off this film. Besides classic horror films, the 2000’s was home to some of America’s favorite romantic comedies. One of the most liked films, was Love Actually. It's a story following the lives of eight couples in dealing with their live lives a month before a frantic Christmas in England.

GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS BY: NINA CECCHI In the 2000’s the president from 2000-2009 was George W. Bush. Starting off with the year of his elections. Bush was an unsuccessful business executive who defeated Al Gore. In 2001, Bush ran on a platform of lower taxes and less government; he wasn't interested in governing. As a result, Bush failed to pay attention to early warnings, and on September 11, terrorists attacked. In 2002, America's got angry. When our forces failed to apprehend those responsible for the attacks, the White House launched a propaganda campaign to convince Americans that Iraq was the guilty party. Then, in 2003, America got even. The Bush administration persuaded Americans that Iraq was responsible for the 9/11 attacks and constituted an imminent threat. On March 20th, US forces invaded Iraq and on May 1st, Bush declared “ mission accomplished . ” 2004, The year that White House propaganda convinced a slim majority of Americans the US was winning the Iraq war and Bush was a competent president
In 2005, as it became apparent the US occupation of Iraq had formed a civil war, Bush’s approval ratings fell below 50 percent and continued to deteriorate for the rest of his term. Now, 2006. As Bush’s approval sank, so did those of the Republican dominated congress. In the midterm elections, Democrats retook control of Congress, This ended the destructive Bush legislative agenda. In 2007, the economy tanked. Through the first year of this decade, America had a negative savings rate as families borrowed against their home equity to maintain their lifestyle. In 2007, the housing bubble burst, resulting in the collapse if the financial system. In 2008, came the election against Obama, which changed everything.
Law and Justice (Supreme Court Case) By: Nico Gurdjian The 2000 presidential election was Al Gore, a democrat against George W. Bush, a Republican. As the election results were counted, it became clear that the vote would be very close, and that the results in of Florida would decide the election. Bush was declared the winner by just a few hundred votes which is a tiny bit in a state with millions of voters. However, reports of problems with ballots (for instance, conflicting ballots that were designed so that people who thought they were voting for Gore ended up casting votes for another candidate) soon decided the results into question. Gore's supporters were upset and sued the state of Florida for a recount. Bush's supporters sued to prevent it. Also Florida's election laws set an unchangeable deadline for announcing the final results, so the recount had to be begun quickly if it was to be done at all. When the Florida Supreme Court decided in favor of Gore, and ordered the recount to be completed, Bush appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5–4 decision, stated that the Supreme Court of Florida had violated the U.S. Constitution so there was no way to hold an acceptable recount by the final election deadline. So Bush the winner of the national election. The Court's decision ended the speculation on who would be president, but it remains a highly controversial moment in the Court's history. Even the Justices themselves couldn't agree on many aspects of the case. The details of Bush v. Gore will probably be argued over for a long time. However, the decision was made, and history was made with it.
FOREIGN AFFAIRS By: Rachel Simmons
President George Walker Bush was in office from 2000 to 2008 and in those eight years, he has done a lot for the foreign affairs of the United States of America. He was part of the Republican Party. President Bush quickly formed a war cabinet on September 11, including Vice President Dick Cheney, National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice, Chief of Staff Andy Card, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Colin Powell. The principal target of U.S. military intelligence following 9/11 was identifying and addressing the source of the attacks. The immediate efforts of George Tenet, director of the CIA, successfully identified al Qaeda, a militant Islamic terrorist organization and its leader, Osama Bin Laden. The Taliban, an extremist Islamic regime that controlled Afghanistan, offered bin Laden sanctuary and al Qaeda trained thousands of terrorists in camps located in that country. Before 9/11, the US had funneled CIA funds to the anti-Taliban group, the Northern Alliance, to combat the Taliban and al Qaeda forces in Afghanistan. After 9/11, the war cabinet quickly acted to target al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan, but, by late September, the Bush administration had yet to determine the scope of the military response to 9/11. Some of his advisors argued for broad military action in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Bush believed that the threat of U.S. power had lost credibility with terrorists due to irresolute responses to attacks during the 1990s. Terrorists felt that they had an open invitation to attack, only expecting minimum retaliation According to Osama Bin Laden, the Americans were “paper tigers” who could be made to “run in less than twenty four hours”
President Bush responded with American troops in Afghanistan to defeat the Taliban and al Qaeda. Congress passed a joint resolution authorizing the use of force against those responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Bush signed this resolution on September 18, 2001. On October 7, the United States began airstrikes against Taliban military installations and al Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan. By early November, Special Forces and the Northern Alliance had liberated Mazari-Sharif, a strategic city in northern Afghanistan; most of the major northern cities fell soon after, forcing the Taliban to retreat from Kabul into the mountains of the South and East. The Bush administration soon had to deal with the fact that rebuilding in Afghanistan had drastically increased. The Bush Doctrine: Before a joint session of Congress on September 20, 2001, President Bush declared a new approach to foreign affairs in response to 9/11. He said, “our war on terror begins with al Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped, and defeated. Bush declared that the United States considered any nation that supported terrorist groups a hostile regime. In January 2002, President Bush called out an Axis of Evil, consisting of North Korea, Iran, and Iraq. He declared these countries a threat to American security. The Bush Doctrine generally focused on three points. The first point was preventive war, in which the United States would strike an enemy nation or terrorist group before they had the chance to attack the United States. The second point was unilateral action in which the United States would act alone if necessary to defend itself either at home or abroad. The third point embraced spreading democracy and freedom around the world, focusing on concepts such as free markets, free trade, and individual liberty.
Domestic affairs By: Nico Gurdjian
From 2000 to 2009, voters made a series of terrible political choices. As a result, for many Americans the US ceased being a land of opportunity and the light of freedom dimmed. In 2000 the decade started with a tight election where George W. Bush — an unsuccessful business executive — defeated Al Gore — a wooden but seasoned political servant — in an election decided by the US Supreme Court. In 2001 Bush ran on a platform of lower taxes and less government. But Bush failed to pay attention to early warnings and, on September 11th, terrorists attacked. The US went to war and the Bush administration claimed near dictatorial power. In 2002 our forces failed to apprehend those responsible for the attacks, the White House launched a propaganda campaign to convince Americans that Iraq’s Saddam Hussein was the guilty. Voters bought into this deception and, in the mid-term elections, supported Republicans as the war Party, resulting in GOP control of Congress. In 2003 the Bush administration spin machine persuaded Americans that Iraq was responsible for the 9/11 attacks and constituted an imminent threat. On March 20th, US forces invaded Iraq and, on May 1st, President Bush declared, “mission accomplished.” In 2004 the White House propaganda convinced a slim majority of Americans the US was winning the Iraq war and George Bush was a competent President. Bush defeated John Kerry in the presidential election.
Domestic affairs continued In 2005 the US occupation of Iraq had fomented a civil war, Bush’s approval ratings fell below 50 percent and continued to deteriorate for the rest of his term. In 2006 as Bush’s approval ratings sank, so did those of the Republican-dominated Congress. In the mid-term elections, Democrats retook control of Congress. In 2007 America had a negative savings rate as families borrowed against their home equity to maintain their lifestyle. Faith that housing prices would increase indefinitely led to gross Wall Street speculation. In 2007 the housing bubble burst, resulting in the collapse of the financial system. In 2008 there were increasing signs of financial panic. Meanwhile, the country was thrilled by the presidential contest, eventually won by Barack Obama, an African-American. In 2009 Before Obama was inaugurated and unemployment rose and business activity declined, the mood of the US soured. And finally in 2010 a earthquake occurs in Haiti killing 230,000 and destroying the majority of the capital. Also up to 260 million gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico over the course of three months when the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded in April, killing 11 workers, and solidifying the accident as the worst oil spill in history.
