Music Music in the 1980’s were influential and very meaningful. In the 1980’s popular songs were We Didn’t Start the Fire by Billy Joel, produced by Storm Front in 1989. It was made by him for his 40th birthday and it outlined all the major events in the last 40 years. Another song was Girls Just Want To Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper produced by herself for her album, She’s so Unusual. Another influential song was Take on Me, by A-ha in his album Hunting High and Low. This song was pop, and it is stll widely played up to today.

Domestic Affairs During the 80s domestic affairs were mostly put in play by one man‌ Ronald Reagan, due to re-election Reagan was president for 8 out of the ten years in the decade (81-89). In these 8 years Regan made a lot of domestic changes. One of the biggest changes he made was cutting taxes 25%. By doing this he supported one of his famous quotes that said government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem." 4


Domestic Affairs Reagan also wanted to cut down on government spending in effort to reduce the massive national debt the the country to this day is still in. Another thing that Reagan pushed economically was that he wanted to increase military spending and invest more money on it. He opened protected federal lands to oil and lumber companies thus allowing the expansion of companies and the exhaust of resources and the destruction of national land. In the end by the time Regan had left office in 89’ he had cut taxes from 70% to 28%. 5


Foreign Affairs The Berlin Wall was a wall built by the East Germans, who were controlled by the Russians. In was built in 1961, and broken down by Reagan in 1989. It separated Germany into East and West, West was democratic, and East was communist. The breakage of the wall, to some historians, was the end of the Cold War. Others say the Cold War come to an end two years later, in 1991. The Iran-Iraq War was a Middle Eastern war between Iran and Iraq from 1980-1988. In the spring 1982, the U.S. decided to give highly classified information to Iraq.

Foreign Affairs During the 80’s, the U.S. continued their policy of containment, in which they tried to stop the spread of communism. They did this in Latin America and in the Middle East, in which they supplied troops and aid to countries fighting communism. Furthermore, the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty), which was signed by Reagan, and it was a contract between the Soviets and the United States too. It eliminated all nuclear bombs and launchers from both the Soviets and the United States.

Politics During the 80s the White House was run by Republican Nominee Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan had a surprisingly successful campaign for previously being a hollywood actor. In the 1980s election Reagan ran against Democratic nominee Jimmy Carter. The results of the election were flabbergasting with Reagan winning by a landslide, beating carter by over 430 electoral votes. Reagan won over the hearts of all americans. After finessing his first term as president he decided to run for re election. In his second political race he ran against Walter Mondale. After Beating Carter by an insane amount that was thought to be impossible to beat, he beat it by beating his opponent by 512 eloctorial votes. Americans fell in love with Reagan and he did an amzing job leading the country to become a better place and dominating 8 out of the 10 years in the 80s.

Law and Justice In the 1980’s there were many defining cases that has impacted other cases. An important case was in 1982, and it was the Connecticut vs. Teal case. The company was more lenient to the African Americans then to the Whites, while the acceptance rate for the job for African Americans was 22.9%, and for Whites was 13.5%. Another important case was the Meritor vs Vinson, in which males were chosen over females, and this case banned sexual discrimination. 9


Way We Lived Back in the 80s children took great pride in the tin/metal lunch boxes they owned and relied greatly on them for popularity, it was very common for kids to have metal lunchboxes with cool designs of their favorite movies or TV, shows such as super heros or the smurfs. Back then it was also very uncommon to have more than 1 computer per classroom so kids use to long for their time to use the very unique at the time classroom computer. After communication being limited to calling from a home phone to another home phone In the 80s the mobile phone finally became a big thing and it was easier to reach someone when they were outside their home, Although the mobile phones were huge and very card to carry, they had a huge impact on the 80s and communication in the future. Another big part in the way in which people lived was the invention of the disposable camera, this allowed people to travel and keep memories in a easier way than ever and taking pictures and keeping memories were revolutionized.

The Soviets had won the last four Olympic gold medals. The USSR hockey team consisted mostly of veterans who had played together for many years and rarely lost. On the other hand, the average age of the American hockey team was 21 years old.

“If it wasn’t the greates upset in the history of sports. I don’t know what was,” said U.S. captain Mike Eruzine, who scored the winning goal in the Americans 4-3 victory of the Soviets. The U.S. would later go on to beat Finland for the gold medal.

Film The 1980s was a time of one of the best Movie decades of all time including all time classics such as the last 2 movies of the original Star Wars trilogy (“Empire Strikes back” and “Return of the Jedi”). These movies Directed by the Genius George Lucas were way ahead of their time and were loved by almost everyone that watched them. Another amazing Film put out during this decade was the infamous sequel of “Back to the Future” (1+2). These moves were loved by people of all ages and all places. It was an action packed sequel with the main character “Marti” played beautifully by Michael J. Fox which made the movie experience even more enjoyable

Celebrity Gossip

Princess Diana was killed in a tragic car crash as she was trying to escape the paparazzi. She was the eldest child of the King and Queen of England, and she was married to Prince Charles. She was heir to the throne and she died in France in September 6, 1997.

Book Review In Judy Blume’s children's novel, Superfudge the Hatcher family briefly moves from New York City to Princeton. Fudge is extremely jelouse of his baby sister, who was given the nickname “Tootsie.” “Peter deals with the fallout from Fudge;s various problems, which include a spat with his teacher who refuses to use the name “Fudge”, antics trying to get rid of Tootsie, and his constant desire to involve himself in Peter’s activities, especially with Peter’s new friend, Alex”("Superfudge")

What Should I Wear?

The 1980’s was a decade of bold style, colors and silhouettes. Other trends spanned from ripped tights and leather to oversized blazers. Style icons ranged from Joan Jett to Brooke Shields. In the 1980’s the guys would wear tight-rolling jeans and gold chains. If a boy wasn’t wearing NFL clothing, then he was wearing a sweatshirt with his favorite cartoon character or superhero 19


Food! In 1986 the Cool Ranch Doritos were introduced. This blew the minds of junk food addicts around the world.

Capri Sun has been distributed in the United States since 1981. If you were a cool kid than you had a Capri Sun in your lunchbox everyday for school.

In 1983, Fruit Roll-Ups debuted in grocery stores around the United States. Fruit Roll-Ups were originally knowns as Fruit Corners and they came in flavors such as, apricot, apple, banana, cherry, and strawberry.

Culture

Cell phones and computers were the biggest technological advances of the 80’s decade. The commodore 64, the first Apple Macintosh, and the IBM 5150 found their way into homes all around the country. These new technologies ranged from $300-$1,000.

Motorola’s DynaTac 8000x was one of the first mobile phones. In the 1980’s there were also big car phones and bag phones that could weigh up to 25 pounds.

In 1985, the average price of a home was about $90,000. A new car was about $10,00 dollars, while gas was about $1.10 per gallon. Also, movie tickets were only about $3.00 each ticket. 21
