Education Education in the 2000’s was very similar to the education today. In the US, there was a charter school movement, which are independently operated schools. In the year 2000, it was in full force since Bill Clinton called for 3,000 to be built by the end of the year. Also, in the World Conference for Education, they set a goal to get free primary education to 113 million children who did not have access to it.
Also homeschooling increased by 800,000 kids from 1995 to 2000, since technology was being used more widespread. In other countries, like Africa, education was improved with the Universal Primary Education Program which was run by the Ugandan government which trained and hired 20,000 new teachers from 1996 to 2000.

Fashion Crop tops! Girls we all know how much teens love those. If only we were this age back then. Everyone was wearing them and they are making their way back in the fashion industry.
Teens were all over skinny cargo pants and so were all those celebs though nowadays we all prefer to not wear them. They were considered high fashion in the early 2000s. Everyone knows about those track suits. Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Jlo, Britney Spears and many more wore them. Juicy Couture was big back then.
Tie Belts! What?? These were in fashion and they were surely one creative way to wear those. Ladies liked to wear ties as belts.

Food The cupcake craze
The character Carrie Bradshaw hits New York City's cupcake mecca Magnolia Bakery on Sex and the City, igniting the cupcake trend. Over the past couple years, popular New York and L.A. based cupcake shops expand into multi state franchises.
Comfort food
After the country suffered one of its worst disasters on September 11, 2001, Americans turned to meatloaf, chicken pot pie, mac 'n cheese, pizza, and all things comforting.
Coffee nation
Coffee Goliath Starbucks achieves world domination as the number of its coffeehouses surpasses 10,000 (today there are over 16,000 worldwide!).
Organic Food Overflow
The organic food movement goes mainstream in a big way when Wal-Mart jumps on the bandwagon, stocking quality organic products at good ole Walmart prices: just 10% more than their conventional foods.
It's never too early for McDonald's.

Culture
The early 2000s was a transitional period in between centuries and new technology. For example, Google was founded in 1998, and gained major popularity in the early 2000s, making it the mega company it is today. Many social networking sites like Facebook were founded, but at the time, MySpace was very popular and so was AOL. MySpace was a social networking site similar to Facebook where people could post their photos and connect. AOL was similar to Google, except it did not have a search engine. Many people had their email with AOL and they got their news from there.
Also many people feared that they world was going to end, or computers were going to shut down when it turned from 1999 to 2000, but none of that happened. Many people became more comfortable with coming out, and more LGBT films were released. Ellen coming out in 1997 was a big 9 inspiration to all of these.
Sports In 2001, there was a World Series Game (Arizona Diamondbacks vs New York Yankees) that ended at Game 7 in the bottom of the 9th inning. This is because Luis Gonzalez of the Diamondbacks hit a walk-off single to beat the New York Yankees to claim the 2001 World Series. This was one of the biggest upsets in baseball as a small team went on to beat a big market team to win the 2001 World Series.
In 2004, the Boston Red Sox won the World Series. They finally won the World Series after going through an 86- year drought without winning one. They finally broke The Curse of the Bambino. David Ortiz’s heroics in the American League Championship Series helped the Red Sox get rid of the curse.

Music In the early 2000s there were many bands, including the ones pictured left to right. Many of these bands started in the 90’s and then carried on into the early 2000s.
MTV is a tv channel that started in the 80s and carried its way through the 2000s. It shows music videos and has reality TV shows. It also hosts awards and was most popular in the early 2000s.
These three artists were very influential in this life. The first one on the top left is Christina Aguilera, a pop singer who won a Grammy in 2000. On the bottom left is Ricky Martin, a latin singer, who’s famous for Livin’ La Vida Loca. Finally, on the right is Janet Jackson who was famous for her provocative songs.

Way We Lived In 2002, the heelys were invented. Heelys are sneakers with wheels on the bottom. This was a new way that children would get to places. Also in the year 2002, the Honda Fit was invented. It is the spearhead of subcompacts in America. It's so good that Honda has been forced to stop selling the Civic in Japan. The little Fit just cannibalized its sales.

Government/Politics When historians update the history of the United States, they’ll conclude this past decade was a turning point. From 2000 to 2009, voters made a series of terrible political choices. The decade opened with a divisive election where George W. Bush, an unsuccessful business executive, won in an election decided by the Electoral College and the US Supreme Court. Bush ran on a platform of lower taxes and less government; he wasn’t interested in governing. Bush failed to pay attention to early warnings and, on September 11th, terrorists attacked. On March 20th, US forces invaded Iraq and, on May 1st, President Bush declared, “mission accomplished.” Bush defeated John Kerry in the next presidential election. Democrats retook control of Congress. This ended the destructive Bush legislative agenda, but could not undo the harm caused by administration appointments and edicts. Throughout the first years of the decade, America had a negative savings rate as families borrowed against their home equity to maintain their lifestyle. In 2007 the financial system collapsed. In 2008 Barack Obama eventually became the 44 president of the United States. Before Obama was inaugurated, it was clear that the US was in the grips of a severe recession.
15
Law and Justice Lots of things in the law and justice system changed during the early 2000s. First off, an immigration law called the Legal Immigration Family Equity amendment was passed. This allowed for families to have a temporary visa if another family member has a permanent one, so they could be together while getting their permanent visa.
In 2003, the Supreme Court heard a case called Lawrence vs. Texas. Lawrence’s house was raided by the police when he was suspected of weapons disturbance. The police caught him in a consensual sexual act with another man, and they arrested him in violation of the Texas Statute. The ruling was 6-3 and they declared his arrest was in violation of the Due Process Clause, which said that the state cannot justify intrusion into his personal home. 16

Foreign Affairs On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group of al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C, and the fourth plane crashed on a field in Pennsylvania.
Al-Qaeda is an Arabic broad-based militant Islamist organization founded by Osama bin Laden. Al-Qaeda began as a logistical network to support Muslims fighting against the Soviet Union during the Afghan War.

Domestic Affairs In the Early 2000s George H. Bush was the president and he dealt with many domestic affairs. First, the 9/11 attacks occurred, so he made the US Patriot act which fought terrorism. This organization is still active today since we are still fighting the war on terror.
Then, Hurricane Katrina occurred and it caused $108.0 Billion dollars in damage, and hit New Orleans, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, New Jersey, Ohio, South Florida, West Virginia, Virginia, New York. To help the damage, the Federal Emergency Management Agency gave out supplies and helped rebuild some of the houses.

Domestic Affairs: 9/11 On September 11, 2001 the biggest terrorist attack up to this date occurred on American soil. The terrorist organization behind it was al-Qaeda and they hijacked four planes, their end goal being to crash them into the most important buildings in the US.
The first one hit one of the Twin Towers, which were the World Trade Center at the time. In the beginning people thought it was a mistake, but that was proven wrong when another plane hit the second tower. Making this more catastrophic, both towers collapsed killing even more of the people inside.
On the same day, another plane hit the west side of the Pentagon, killing more people. Finally, another plane was supposed to hit the White House, but the passengers on board were able to take control back over and crash landed. All 45 of them died, but they did it for their country. 22
Book Review Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Diary of a Wimpy Kid was written in 2007. It is about a kid named Greg who goes through the troubles of middle school. He has an older brother named Rodrick who teases him all the time, and he has a little brother named Manny who is spoiled because he gets everything he wants. Greg loves to play video games unlike the other boys who play outside.
On the first day of school he is forced to sit with the weird kid. His best friend is named Rowley, and in their effort to become popular, they join the wrestling team but fail. On Halloween, they get chased by teenagers, and all through the year they get themselves into horrible situations.
When I was small, I loved reading this book. It was turned into a series about Greg’s coming of age. It was also turned into a movie series which is very popular and still runs today. This book was a very big part of everyone's childhood.

Gossip “We’ve known each other since we were little girls. We’ve always been friends,” says Paris Hilton. Frenemies have a long history and everyone knows that Paris Hilton made Kim Kardashian famous. Back when Paris was leading the simple life and revolutionizing celebrity and reality television without even knowing it, her "maid" and sometimes BFF Kim Kardashian was little more than an accessory to Paris' early '00s spendy, tacky, chic lifestyle. So long before anyone was keeping up with the Kardashians, everyone was minding Paris Hilton's business. After all, now we can say that Paris has become more irrelevant than Kim was back then. 24
