Fashion/By: Wyatt The fashion of the 70’s was a cool type of fashions. The women mostly wore bell bottom jeans, loose shirts, skirts, sunglasses, big fluffy coats and sport jackets. The men wore tight bell bottom jeans, plaid or plain shirts, big belts and occasionally overalls. The shoes that they wore were mostly colored dress shoes or high top sneakers. They also wore running sneakers. Their hair was in curls and short. They also had beanies and hats on sometimes. One big thing that also came out for fashion in the 70’s is the creation of the moon ring. This was a ring that has colors depending on the mood you are in.

1970’s Culture By: Jack Bullard The culture of the 1970’s was very unique. The ‘70’s held everything from pet rocks to water beds to lava lamps. During the changing times, many fads took over such as disco music, mopeds, and Mexican Jumping Beans.

Some consistent parts of the culture of the 1970’s included rock and roll music, environmentalism, and hippiedom. VCR’s, the microwave, and the first microprocessor all appeared in the 70’s. Everyday things such as furniture lost their “space-age” look and went more conservative, only to be filled with wild color. Soon, everything was colorful in everyday life.

Way we Lived in the 1970s By: Ethan Vigdor

Due to the economy slowing dramatically in the 1970s people became concerned with protecting their families and not changing the world. The quest for individual perfection led to a higher divorce rate because people believed that it was acceptable to leave a marriage if it did not make them feel fulfilled. Feminism gained strong in the 1970s highlighted by now having the right to choose for abortions. The 1970s will also be remembered for its fads such as buying a pet rock and streaking places. Email was also created in 1971 which completely changed the way to communicate and advertise among other things. The ink jet printer was created in 1976. The MRI scanner was invented on Christmas day in 1977. The artificial heart was invented in 1978. The portable cell phone was created in 1979.

Government in the 1970’s By: Jack Bullard In the 1970’s there were many events in the US government. In 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency was made as the citizens were rapidly becoming more environmentally aware, stopping national protests. In 1971, the 26th amendment was made, which lowered the voting age to 18. The president throughout this time was Richard Nixon, who was re-elected in 1972, and with him came the Watergate scandal. Gerald Ford then took over as president until 1976. From 1973-1974, gasoline prices skyrocketed as the supply of gasoline and heating oil were in short supply after the Arab Oil Embargo. Thus, daylight savings time was started and the national speed limit was lowered to 55 mph. In 1976, Jimmy Carter was elected. In 1978, Jimmy Carter helped at the Camp David Peace Accords, which ended a 30 year war.

Law and Justice by Lukas Stavrinides The Marine Mammal Protection Act was enforced in the 1970s. The government had to put it into action because many people realized the amount of dolphins that were being killed in the North Pacific.

Roe v. Wade was a very important case that happened in the U.S. in 1973. The topic of the case was abortion. In a 7-2 ruling, the Supreme Court made abortion legal. Pro life supporters continue to fight so that the Supreme Court turns around the ruling. From 1973 to now what states have done is pass laws to limit late term abortions.

Foreign Affairs by Lukas Stavrinides

Nixon and Gerald Ford were the two main presidents during the 70s. Nixon’s foreign policies were very efficient during the 1970s and most people liked his policies. His policy was called detente and it was the policy of easing tensions with communist powers. This helped him ease tensions with the USSR and in the Cold War. One of the things that he did was get United States troops out of Vietnam. He did this by using a term known as Vietnamization. Vietnamization was a process in which U.S. troops had to train South Korean troops and then they would come back to the United States. Another thing that Nixon did in foreign policy was that he was the first president ever to travel to China.

18

Foreign Affairs Continued by Lukas Stavrinides Gerald Ford was the President after Richard Nixon. He followed many of Nixon’s policies. Even though Ford followed Nixon’s policy, he was not as good as Nixon. Many people didn’t like what he did.

Gerald Ford also told his foreign policy advisers to help him in foreign policy. Henry Kissinger, the Secretary of State at the time helped Ford a lot with easing tensions in the Cold War.

Domestic Affairs lukas Once again, this article will talk about Nixon and Ford and their domestic policies. Nixon did not do well in domestic affairs. One of the obstacles that Nixon could not tackle was inflation. Inflation was very high in the United States at the time of his presidency because of the Vietnam War. Another way that Nixon did bad in domestic affairs was because of the Watergate Scandal. This was when Nixon hired two spies to spy on the Democrats at the Watergate Building. Later, he was impeached but was pardoned after by his Vice President, Gerald Ford.

Domestic Affairs Continued- Lukas

Gerald Ford also did not do well in domestic policy. He had to fight inflation and it was worse when he was President. Ford tried to fight inflation by enforcing tax cuts and making acts, but they had little effect on the problem. Also, he pardoned the former President, Richard Nixon from the Watergate Scandal. Many people did not like this decision and he heavily criticized by everyone across the nation. During his presidency, unemployment was also rising.
