Education Mar huguet Education in the 1980’s was huge. Reformers suggested many ways to attack the education deficit but were unsuccessful in many ways. Some reforms included more subject-centered curriculum, greater focus on math and science, leadership training for principals and teachers and increased time for learning. A main change that occurred was the Kentucky Education Reform Act where 92% of schools improved after changes. In 1983, The US Department of Education conducted its own study revealing that an estimated of 23 million American adults were totally or functionally illiterate. The Back to Basics Movement made a big change in education. In the early 1980’s US Secretary of Education Terrel Bell, argued that the liberal social movements of the 60’s and 70’s had led schools to focus excessively on equity,
opportunity and resources, and not enough on quality and what students actually learned. In 1981, Bell created the National Commission on Excellence in Education, which then produced A Nation at Risk, highlighting a “rising tide of mediocrity.” The report argued that equity was best served by upgrading the quality of schooling. It defined educational excellence primarily in terms of students’ “performing on the boundary of individual ability” and schools’ setting “high expectations.” And it stressed the need for quality teachers and the need to raise teacher salaries to attract them.
Fashion BY: MAR HUGUET Fashion in the 80’s was an important ideal of culture. It was a decade of bold style and colors. Many styles started from popular celebrities or movies, and believe it or not, some have made a major comeback today. One major look from the 80’s is the Preppy look. This look was mostly covered up in brands like Lacoste, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Gap. Argyle sweaters were also popular in this look or a loosely tied sweater around their neck with a collared shirt.
Teenage girls were into wearing leg warmers in the 1980’s. They became popular because of the high number of attendance to aerobics classes and because of the movies Flashdance and Fame. Hairstyles in the 80’s were big. Women wore their hair up and down making it look bigger. Mullets were very popular for men too. Many rock and punk bands wore long hair which also became popular in the 80’s. Neon and bright colors were huge in the 80’s too.
People would wear all kinds of neon accessories. Such as, loose crop tops over your shirt, leggings, leg warmers, or socks and bracelets. Major fashion icons in the 80’s were Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Katharine Hamnett. Madonna started the look of scrunchies, leather jackets and tutsis which people fell in love with and broke many style boundaries. Michael Jackson's famous power jacket became a signature look and one of the most copied cuts of the decade. It was described as “the greatest piece of rock memorabilia ever” and sold for $1.8 million. Katharine Hamnett was the inventor of the slogan tee. She used her design powers for good to convey political messages and encouraging people to use their voices.

During the 80s, people owned and acted very different from the way people do today. For example activities were very different, cars people owned, and slang. If anyone were to travel back in time, they would realize that words are a factor that has changed between the 80s and now. Some slang used in the 80s are, where is the beef? What's your damage? Tubular, radical, psych, motor, grody to the max, gnarly, gag me with a spoon, bag your face, barf me out. Bag your face which means that someone is so unattractive you would like for them to place a bag over their face. Barf me out, is used when you are given a very offensive piece of news. Grody to the max, could mean that something is so disgusting that you would rather it not exist. Motor means got to go. Ever since the 80s, peoples cars have changed a lot. During these times people used cars like the 1984-1991 audi 500 and 100, the 1981-1992 toyota cressida, the 1984-1985 ferrari 288 gto,the 1983-1988 ford thunderbird, the 1984-1993 mercedes benz 190E, the 1986-1989 Hyundai excel, the 1986-1992 mazda Rx-7 and, the 1984-1996 chevrolet corvette c4. These were some of the most iconic cars driven, bought, and commercialized in the 1980s. Most movies set in the 80s tempt to have cars like these to set the mood and location of what traveling in the 80s was like.

“The Shot” “The Shot” is the name of the basket that Michael Jordan made in Game 5 of the 1989 Eastern Conference against the Cleveland Cavaliers. This shot allowed The Chicago Bulls to win the series and is considered one of Jordan’s best moments of his career. The Bulls were up, 99-98, with 6 seconds left. But, the Cavs were able to take the lead with a layup by Craig Ehlo. With only 3 seconds left, The Chicago Bulls decided to call a time-out to discuss their gameplan. Back into the game, The Cavs double-teamed Jordan with Ehlo and Nance on the inbounds. First, Jordan moved to his right, then cut left to get open and receive a pass from Brad Sellers. Jordan ended the game with 44 points, ending with the game-winning shot over Craig Ehlo. Shortly after the shot, Jordan leaped into the air with joy, and Ehlo fell to the floor in despair. Jordan’s leap is still one of the most remembered moments in NBA history.

Way We Lived
The way people lived their daily lives versus the way we live ours are very different because of inventions created in that time, and activities done together. Today activities are very similar to the ones that took place in the 80s. People would, drive-in to watch movies in their cars, go bowling, roller skating, ice skating, penny socials where you would collect a used object, gotta arcade rooms, and play mini golf. Inventions made in the 80s, were the beginning to a lot of technology and inventions used and made today. Some examples of inventions made in the 80s are the mobile phone, the disposable and poloroid camera, the HDTV, and the ibm and macintosh personal computer. The disposable and polaroid cameras have led to more advanced camera technology we use today like the canon or nikon brand. Another very big improvement made in the 80s was the invention of the space shuttle in 1981. Columbia and Enterprise were two very famous space shuttle from around that time.

Law and Justice NATALIE MENENDEZ
During the 1980s, there were a total of 10 supreme court cases spanning from 1981 to 1989. Some of the decisions made during this time strengthened fundamental principles, especially in the area of disparate impact, wage discrimination, and sexual harassment.
One act passed during the 1980s was the “Highway Interstate Act of 1982.” This act temporarily increased the United States gasoline tax from 4 cents to 9 cents until 1988. This was passed during a time of recession, to fund the Surface Transportation Assistance Act highway improvements and public transit improvements.
One of the most important cases from the 1980s was called “Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson. This was the supreme court’s first ever sexual harassment case. Before 1986, if a woman’s boss sexually harassed her while she was working, her only solution was to quit and find a new job. In 1986, the Supreme Court ruled that making sexual references or advances in the workplace was not allowed and created a hostile work environment.
BERLIN WALL GOES DOWN! mAR huguet
On November 9, 1989, the movement of freedom for the Germans began. The Berlin Wall was one of the greatest symbols of communism which separated the communist side of East Berlin with the democratic side West Berlin. When it was torn down it signaled the end of the communist bloc. The movement was urged by US President Ronald
Reagan when he travelled to the Berlin Wall and gave his famous speech. The speech said “Mr Gorbachev tear down this wall.” On November 9, the head of the East German Communist Party announced that citizens could cross the border whenever they pleased. That night, crowds swarmed the wall, picking up hammers and began to tear down the wall. This was one of the best days for the German citizens. People finally got to reunite with their families after years and years of not being able to see each other. To this day, the Berlin Wall remains one of the most powerful and enduring symbols of the 1900’s.
FOREIGN AFFAIRS: REAGAN DOCTRINE The foreign policy of Ronald Reagan was the NATALIE MENENDEZ foreign policy of the United States from 1981 to 1989. The main goal was to win the Cold War and to rollback Communism (which was achieved in Eastern Europe in 1989). It was characterized by a strategy of “peace through strength” and an escalation of Cold War tensions 1981-84, followed by a warming of relations with the Soviet Union, 1981-89. In his State of the Union address, President Ronald Reagan defines some of the key concepts of his foreign policy, establishing what comes to be known as the “Reagan Doctrine.” The doctrine served as the foundation for the Reagan administration’s support of “freedom fighters” around the globe. America’s “mission” was to “nourish and defend freedom and democracy.” The Reagan Doctrine is the third such attempt since The first was the Nixon Doctrine: relying Vietnam. on friendly regimes to police their regions. Unfortunately, the jewel in the crown of this theory was the Shah of Iran. Like him, it was retired in 1979 to a small Panamanian island. Next came the Carter Doctrine, declaring a return to unilateral American action, if necessary, in defense of Western interests. That doctrine rested on the emergence of a rapid deployment force. Unfortunately, the force The Reagan Doctrine proclaims overt turned out neither rapid nor deployable. and unashamed American support for antiCommunist revolution. The grounds are justice, necessity and democratic tradition. Justice, said the President in his Feb. 16 radio address, because these revolutionaries are "fighting for an end to tyranny."
FOREIGN AFFAIRS: STAR WARS SPEECH President Reagan gave a speech from his Oval Office on February 6th, 1983. He called for defending the United States against a first-strike attack by developing a “Strategic Defense Initiative” system. It gained the name “Star Wars,” after the futuristic Hollywood movie. Reagan’s initial goal was to mount near-total defense against a massive sophisticated intercontinental ballistic missile attack. Star Wars called for building a network of ground-based systems to shield the country; the space-based portion
its Safeguard program, which was briefly deployed to defend a single location. f SDI worked as advertised and had been adopted, it would have moved the nation’s strategic defenses away from mutual assured destruction, or MAD. While MAD served as the long-standing mantra of preventing the Cold War from becoming a hot one, Reagan viewed it as a dual suicide pact.Although never developed or deployed, the SDI effort served as a precursor for some of the anti-ballistic missile systems President Donald Trump advocates today.
would have used lasers armed with nuclear warheads to shoot down incoming soviet missiles. SDI wasn’t the first U.S. defensive system against nuclear ballistic missiles. In the 1960s, the Pentagon developed but did not deploy the Sentinel program in a bid to offer a limited defensive shield. Subsequently, the U.S. Air Force utilized some Sentinel technology for
DOMESTIC AFFAIRS: REAGAN mAR HUGUET Ronald Reagan, the 40th US president from 1981 to 1989 made a big contribution to all the domestic affairs in the 80’s. He promised to cut taxes, restrain government spending, and balance the federal budget. He became known as the Great Communicator because Reagan convinced many Americans that he could solve their problems. He first started with an argument about how reducing
government spending and taxes would fire up the economy by giving taxpayers more money to spend and give businesses more reasons to manufactures and sell. His economic program became known as Reaganomics. He began by slicing more than 40$ billion from the federal budget.
In 1981, he persuaded Congress to lower taxes by 25%. Time magazine concluded that he had done more to alter the economic direction of the country than any other President in 50 years. Reagan also reduced costly antipollution regulations and opened protected federal lands to oil and lumber companies. When Reagan left the White
House in 1989, his record was mixed. He did not succeed in balancing the budget. In fact, his tax cuts and increases in military spending had led to record federal deficits. Critics charged that cuts in social programs and taxes hurt the poor and favored the rich. Although, he did keep his promises to limit government by slowing its growth. His policies helped to expand the economy and shrink inflation.
