Sports Of The 90’s By: Mason Davenport Sports today are very similar if not identical to sports in the late 20th century. A less popular sport, cycling was revolutionized by Lance Armstrong. Armstrong was recovering from testicular cancer when he won his first Tour de France. Sadly, Armstrong was stripped of a few of his medals due to using PEDs (Performance Enhancing Drugs). Previously he had denied consuming these drugs until his blood was tested and high amounts of EPO, testosterone, human growth hormone, and blood doping.

Another somewhat unpopular sport, tennis became enticing to viewers because of Andre Agassi. Agassi won 5 grand slams in the 1990’s. HIs downfall in 1997 occurred when he took crystal meth.

The 1995-1996 season was a magical one for the Chicago Bulls. At the time it was the best record ever and the team won the championship. This was the fourth of Michael Jordan’s rings with two more to come. The 1990’s Bulls are known as the most dominant team ever as they did not blow a 1 3-1 lead.

Music Of The 90’s By: Mason Davenport The music world of the 1990’s saw many new genres of music. These genres ranged from grunge to R&B. A grunge band known as Nirvana, helped shape the music world as it is known today. In its heyday from 19911994 400,000 copies of their album, Nevermind was sold a week. Nirvana’s downfall began when they had not produced an album in 15 months and their popularity began to die. Deciding to go on tour again in 1993 because of a duo of singles, “Puss”, and “Oh The Guilt”. While it was not known at the time, this would be the last tour by Nirvana. This was because of lead singer, Kurt Cobain overdosing on methamphetamine. Family and friends urged him to give up his addiction. He did so but at a high price, as one week later, he was found dead with a shotgun wound to his head with a ruling of a suicide.

The artist, Eric Wright known as Eazy-E was a renown gangsta rapper. He worked alongside other famous rappers such as Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. Previously as a member of N.W.A. he produced many hit songs. Growing up in Compton, Eazy- E was inspired by rappers such as Bob Marley as a child. When he was young his mother worked multiple jobs to support him and his siblings because of their father leaving. Sadly he died of aids in 1995.

Government and Politics By: Mason Davenport The 1990’s were plagued with war, terrorism, and scandals. In 1990 George Bush sent troops to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in the Persian Gulf War. This resulted in Kuwait being freed, but Saddam Hussein remained in power. Bush was not reelected in 1992, the democrat Bill Clinton would come to power. At home multiple bombings occurred from 1993 to 1996. The World Trade Center in 1993 was the target of attackers, but the building survived. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Book Review By: Mason Davenport The beloved children’s novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is beloved by all and is a future classic. J.K. Rowling who previously was a single mother and lived on welfare found magic within her writings and became the first billionaire as a self-made author. The first of many masterpieces by J.K. Rowling, tells of an orphan who finds a love of magic with his struggle of good vs. evil. The story begins with Harry’s abusive uncle, imprisoning Harry in his house with his wife and son. Harry is then “rescued” by his new found friend, Hagrid the Giant and travels to his new school, Hogwarts. For the next few months, Harry enjoys his life at Hogwarts until the man who murdered his parents, Voldemort appears. Harry along with his friends believe they have defeated the Lord, but little do they known, he will strike again. Throughout the novel J.K. Rowling excels in a strong storyline the characters sometimes behave out of character. For example, one of Harry’s best friends, Hagrid makes a bad mistake, but would rather Harry take the fall than him. Overall this is an excellent novel

Food By: Jeremy Trattler In the 1990s lunchables gained a massive amount of popularity. What made lunchables so popular was the fact that kids loved them and it gave the parents one less thing to worry about in the morning. Another popular food in the 90s was bagel bites. These mini pizza bagels. Were made from a tiny bagel cut in half with small cubes of cheese and tomatoes. They could be eaten at any time of the day by putting them in the microwave for a minute.

Although starbucks has been open since the 70s, it really gained popularity in the 90s. By the end of the 90s Starbucks went from around fifty stores in the U.S to 2,500 internationally. Not only did starbucks grow in the 90s but more the love for coffee did to.

Education By: Jeremy Trattler In the 1990s the main goal was to raise test scores. The Educate Americans Act was signed in 1964. This provided extra resources for learning and education so every child could reach their full potential. In 1996, Bill Clinton stated some goals that should be met by 2000. Clinton wanted to raise the High School graduation rate to 90 percent. The first goal was for teachers to have the proper training and resources needed to help students learn to use computers.

Also, he said that every classroom should have a modern computer in it. Additionally, every classroom should be connected to the "information Highway" also known as the internet. Every classroom should be effective in using engaging software and online resources. This should be an integral part of every school's curriculum.

Law and Order By: Jeremy Trattler

The People VS O.J. Simson On June 12, 1994, the NFL player and actor O.J. Simson was put on trial for two counts of murder his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. The trial lasted for eleven months. Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman were found dead at Nicole's bundy drive. There was one gove found at the scene. The other glove was found at Simpson's Rockingham estate. At the estate they also found O.J.'s white ford Bronco with blood scattered on it. On June 17, 1994, lawyers convinced LAPD to allow Simpson to turn himself in at 11 a.m. Simpson did not turn himself in, so at 2 pm LAPD issued an all-points bulletin.

At 5 pm Robert Kardashian read a letter from Simpson to the media that sounded like a suicide note. After Simpson in a white ford Bronco was spotted in Orange County, police started chasing a car. One of Simpson's good friend, Al Cowlings was driving while Simpson was in the back pointing a gun at his head and giving orders. The Bronco was eventually being chased by twenty police cars and nine helicopters. More that 95 million people watched the chase. On October 3, 1995, Orenthal James Simpson was found not guilty.

Domestic Affairs By: David Krajewski Many Domestic Affairs occurred during the 1990’s era. To begin, the first World Trade Center bombing occurred on February 26, 1993. A truck detonated with explosives in it under the North tower. The reason for only exploding the North Tower was so that the North Tower would collapse onto the other tower. This plan failed and killed several people and wounded a thousand others. This plan was constructed and executed by six Terrorists. Next, the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy was passed by Bill Clinton. This policy allowed Homosexuals to serve in the military as long as they did not tell anyone that they were homosexual. This, at the time, was a major step for the gay community because, even though they still experienced discrimination, they were now allowed to serve in the armed forced. This act was repealed in 2010 by President Obama, and he allowed them to be openly homosexual.

Domestic Affairs (Continued) By: David Krajewski After, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was signed. The main reason for this was to eliminate any trade barriers that were between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The treaty was finally signed after several delays on January 1, 1994 by President Clinton. Within 10 years of being signed, practically all tariffs between the US and Mexico were eliminated.

Then, the 1995 trial of O.J. Simpson for the murder of his wife and Richard Goldman occurred. While what happened on that night is still unclear, police came to a conclusion that O.J. had to have been the murderer. Police demanded he turn himself in just 5 days after the murder, or they would come in and arrest him. HIs trial had no impact on this nation’s legal system.

The Way We Lived By: David Krajewski & Jeremy Trattler During the 1990’s, the show Seinfeld was very popular. The show was about the main character, Jerry Seinfeld, and his friends and how they dealt with everyday problems they faced with other people, and with the city of New York.

In the 1990’s, many things started becoming popular. For example, bookstores became a big thing during that decade. They became such a big thing because they realized that since people liked coffee and reading, adding coffee shops right into their bookstores would bring in a lot of people.

In the mid 1990's dvd players started to gain popularity. This then made VHSs useless because dvds were much more compact and portable. The company, Blockbuster, made a lot of money because they made the transition to DVDs very quickly 20 to make sure their rental business would remain strong

Foreign Affairs By: David Krajewski The First Gulf War, codenamed Operation Desert Storm, was a campaign by a US led coalition force against an Iraqi invasion on August 2nd, 1990. President George H.W. Bush deployed American troops to Saudi Arabia and then asked the international community to follow. An alliance was formed, with the biggest military contributors being the United States, with Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom and Egypt. On January 17, 1991, the attack began with a bombing. This was followed by a February 24 attack. The allied forces were able to liberate Kuwait and advance into Iraq with incredible speed. 100 hours after the attack, a ceasefire was declared. Next, in the month of December of the year 1991, Congress voted for the breaking up of the Soviet Union. President Yeltsin acknowledged the independence of Ukraine and other republics. Because of this, he finally bans the Soviet Communist Party in Russia. Gorbachev resigned as Soviet president on Christmas Day. This was a very positive turning point for Russia.

Foreign Affairs (Continued) The Berlin Wall had been in construction since August 13, 1961 to keep East Germans from fleeing communism to democracy in West Germany. Until November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall stood tall dividing the 2 regions. On November 9, 1989, it was torn down almost as quickly as it was constructed. The Berlin Wall stretched over a hundred miles. The fall of the wall signaled the end of the Cold War.

The United States invaded Panama to try and overthrow military dIctator Manuel Noriega. He had been charged with drug trafficking and accused of suppressing democracy in Panama and endangering U.S. nationals. The dictator sought asylum in Panama City, but he quickly surrendered on January 3rd, 1990. On December 20, 9,000 U.S. troops joined 12,000 other U.S. troops in Panama and were met with the resistance of Panama’s armed forces. By December 24th, the United States held most of the country. On January 3rd, Noriega was arrested by U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency agents. This invasion only killed 23 U.S. soldiers and 3 U.S. civilians. a 23
