GUYANA DAILY NEWS Opposition Concerned About Speaker’s Impartiality PAGE 2

Gail Teixeira After the National Assembly’s Private Members’ Business day; popularly known as “Opposition Days”, was denied and the President’s speech was tabled to take precedence over other issues such as the parking meter system, Durban park development project etc., the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic(PPC) said it is being constantly denied its right in the National Assembly. PPP/C Chief whip Gail Teixeira on Friday at a PPP/C press conference related that out of 17 sittings of the National Assembly the opposition had four times to carry their motion.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2016

The PPP/C Member of Parliament (MP) said that the wavering of the Private Member’s day to debate the president’s speech is one component of the scenario which took place at the last sitting of the National Assembly and the Speaker’s interference in the member’s right to speak is now becoming frustrating for the opposition. The comment came after PPP/C MP Anil Nandlall was prohibited from speaking and participating in the business of the day and subsequently expelled from the National Assembly by Speaker Dr Barton Scotland. Teixeira commented on the Speaker’s tendency to call for source document saying that according Erskine May’s Parliamentary Practice, any f Member of Parliament may quote from a source which thereafter the source is presented to the preliminary reporter for accuracy checks and not to the Speaker. Teixeira said that the opposition finds this new development worrying. After being expelled from that National Assembly, the former Attorney General issued a statement reminding that “a speaker’s role is to maintain order with a view to

facilitate and encourage the debate, not to curtail and frustrate it.” “The notion which seems to have permeated the 11th Parliament that the Speaker can capriciously interfere with a member’s right to speak and to influence the content of those speeches and the whimsical requests for evidence and sources from members during the course of their speeches in relation to matters that enjoy public notoriety and which are published widely in the press, is not only a gross abuse of power by the chair but is also an unlawful interference with a member’s duty to represent his constituents,” Nandlall explained Taxieria quoted Erskine May’s again saying that “The chief characteristics attaching to the Office of Speaker in the House of Commons are authority and impartiality.” She went on to quoted “confidence in impartiality of the speaker is an indispensable condition of the successful working or procedure and many convention existed which have as their subject not only to ensure the impartiality of the speaker but also ensure that his impartially is general recognized.”

Government Considering Alternative Sentencing To Reduce Prison Overcrowding

Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General, Basil Williams The Ministry of Legal Affairs is in consultation with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on developing alternative sentencing as part of measures to reduce overcrowding in the prisons. Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General, Basil Williams told the Government Information Agency (GINA) recently that, “it’s something still in the pipeline” but the government will be considering “alternative sentencing, pre-trail liberty and considerations like that” as it seeks to address overcrowding in prisons. “The whole idea is to try to weed out these offences

that are clogging up (the prisons). Sometimes some people who are there for a six-month sentence could have had some other sentence,” Minister Williams explained. A report from the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the Camp Street Prison riots, which led to the death of 17 persons in March, cited overcrowding as a major factor. The COI report noted that there is a huge disparity in the ratio of remand to convicted prisoners. It went on to call for more enforcement of the Bail Act. Bail is a constitutional right afforded to prisoners with the exception of murder, treason or the possibility of the accused being a flight risk.

In the meantime, the government has allocated $25M to facilitate Night Court sessions as an immediate measure aimed at reducing the backlog in the judicial system, and particularly overcrowding in prisons. Minister Williams opined for the Night Court to be successful, it must target criminal cases with sentences between three months to three years, “So that we won’t have people with these offences clogging up the prisons.” Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Security’s Citizen Security Strengthening Programme (CSSP) will be conducting a study to evaluate alternatives to incarceration. Funding for that project was acquired from the IDB.

Cottage industries produced drinking chocolate and households made sugar-cake, black-pudding, souse, mabi (mauby) and other beverages for sale. Artisans, blacksmiths, tinsmiths, contractors and carpenters built and maintained bridges, houses, kokers and other minor public works. They are questioning why the inauguration took place at Victoria Village and not at a national venue. On November 07, 2016, the National Day of Villages was launched in Sendall Park, Victoria by President David Granger along with Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan and Minister of Telecommunications Cathy Hughes among other government officials. In his feature address, President Granger said that his government would support viable micro-enterprise projects at the village level even as it must maintain macro-economic stability. “Victoria produced everything people needed to eat. They did it before and it must do it again. Every household maintained kitchen gardens for green vegetables. Farms in the back-dam produced fruit, ground provisions and plantains and farmers sold their produce at a vibrant village market. Micro-businesses such as bakeries, clothing stores, retail shops and

GUYANA DAILY NEWS Volda Lawrence Should Be More Proactive – Social Workers PAGE 8

Many Social Workers across the country especially in Berbice, are calling on the Ministry of Social Protection to do more in combating societal social ills. They noted that since the APNU+AFC government took office in May 2015, little to nothing has been done to battle problems such as suicide, domestic violence, interpersonal violence, school drop outs, foster care, vagrancy, sexual offences and among others. Social workers believe that the government needs to have a more proactive Minister to head this all important Ministry. Echoing the Social Workers concerns are citizens, some of whom are victims of some form of violence or the other. They said that the current Minister, Volda Lawrence lacks vision to deal with the issues affecting citizens. They criticized Lawrence for endorsing Winston Harding at the recently concluded Local Government Elections. Harding is accused of sexual molestation of a child. The Minister had said that the case was a “family issue” which has been on-going for “whatever reason”. The Minister was heavily criticized by the Red Thread and other human rights groups. Karen DeSouza, Head of Red Thread said that the Minister’s words and actions in this matter is unacceptable since it appears as if she is attempting to ‘excuse’ the alleged perpetrator. She further stated that “she [Lawrence] has demonstrated that she is not qualified to be a Minister with responsibility for child care and protection. You can’t on one hand make excuses for not addressing a situation involving a pedophile in a legal way and on the other hand say that you take child care seriously, it is contradictory. And so the Government has to hold her responsible as we are holding her responsible.”

St Vincent And The GrenadinesandBans Capture Of Sea Turtles fauna) and its agriculture as an eco-tourism product,

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent -- St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) has joined the list of countries worldwide that ban the capture of sea turtles. This came after a series of consultations locally, with regional and international stake holders, including WIDECAST partners Carla Daniel and Dr Darren Browne of the Barbados Sea Turtle Project. Research has revealed that all local turtles face different levels of threat, from vulnerable to critically endangered. The outright prohibition of capturing sea turtles has been launched under the theme "No extinction in my generation". “All of the turtle species in our waters were facing various levels of threats, and my government decided that it was time to fall in line with the steps taken by our brothers and sisters in Cuba, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and South and Latin America to institute a total ban on the killing of sea turtles and harvesting of their eggs. The total prohibition is to be effective from January 1, 2017,” said minister of fisheries, Saboto Caesar. Caesar noted that this decision was made with future generations of Vincentians in mind and represents one of the biggest conservation acts by the government since it took office in 2001. Recently, Caesar championed and received recognition by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in Rome for the government's efforts to fight illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The ministry of agriculture, forestry, fisheries and rural transformation will host an agro tourism seminar on November 15, which will begin to highlight how SVG can do more to showcase its natural resources (flora

Passengers Condemn LIAT Flight Delays And Disruptions bother go to St Vincent, don’t bother go to Barbados By Ken Richards BASSETERRE, St Kitts (WINN) -- From all reports they enjoyed Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival and the independence celebrations generally, and were eager to get back to their diasporan base. In Isabella Isaac’s case, home was Atlanta, Georgia, and the first leg of the journey back began with LIAT, at Dominica’s Douglas/Charles Airport. “I expected the best flight ever because this was a direct flight from Dominica to Puerto Rico with a connecting flight at 4 pm to Atlanta. Unfortunately I got there, I was told that my 72-seater was downsized and due to that I was unable to leave at my designated time. I tried to get another flight on another airline, I was told not to do that because we will have accommodation for you within an hour, we will have some good news, never happened. “It took me over 12 hours just to leave the island, just sitting at the airport and the best they could tell me is that they could not accommodate me for my connecting flight because it had nothing to do with them. Make it worse we left at 9:30 pm with the promise that we would get to Puerto Rico by 10:30 pm, instead we were brought to Antigua to overnight and then the next best flight would be at 11:45 am on Saturday morning. “Well here I am Saturday morning hoping that I will have a pleasant trip to Puerto Rico. Not just that, it cost me $200 to change my flight on the next leg which would be at 7 am and I was told that I would not make it at 7 am so now I have to go back to Delta airlines to get another flight to Atlanta, so hopefully I will be in Atlanta at 7 pm if LIAT keeps its promise. So my 12 hour journey back to Atlanta took me two days.” Texas-based Germaine Bellot had a similar experience. For her, it was a case of déjà vu. “I had the exact experience last year coming down for the World Creole Festival, we got bounced all over and then back in Antigua with the very identical situation, overnight in Antigua, kept being pushed back and I’m experiencing the same thing again this weekend.” One of the more vocal passengers, Edwina Lewis, has suggested that, in her words, LIAT’s poor service, is hurting Caribbean tourism. “If you travel on the airline to where you’re going to get to, it’s horrible, when you get to the island you’re not going to enjoy the island as much as you would like to because you had a terrible experience getting to the island. So when you get back you’re going to tell people you know what, don’t bother to go to Dominica, don’t

because the service you get from the airline you have to use to get there is not going to get you there on time. So what do they do, go somewhere else.” Franklyn Magloire’s same day trip to St Kitts Friday was derailed – he arrived in Basseterre the following day about lunchtime, after being forced to overnight in Antigua. “I would tell LIAT to straighten up their act, privatize the firm and do something, they cannot afford to do that, they are driving business away from the islands. These long delays and the customer service is horrible, you know the flight is cancelled nobody comes out to explain to you what’s going on. You look to get an agent, they are not available, that is not the way business is done.” Passenger Germaine Bellot also has some advice for LIAT. “Figure out a solution to on time departures, proper communication with passengers and respect, treat us with respect. I think we deserve that.” Former West Indies fast bowler Norbert Phillip was also among the passengers affected by the LIAT delays and flight disruptions. Just a few days before the LIAT passengers’ debacle, Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit was backing LIAT’s appeal for more Caribbean governments to invest in the regional airline. “The point is that this is the nature of the airline business and people have to understand while we have issues with LIAT from a customer service stand point, it is still a public good. If you had to look at it from a commercial stand point it would have to cut numerous routes. This is why we believe that more of our governments need to come to LIAT to assist.” (Caribbean News Now!)

GUYANA DAILY NEWS Security Stipulations For Housing Developments Coming — Minister PAGE 17

Jamaica – The Government will be amending the law to ensure that developers implement specific security infrastructure in new housing projects. Minister of National Security Robert Montague made the disclosure during a town hall meeting with residents and business owners of New Kingston at the Courtleigh Hotel recently. “This Administration is taking to Parliament, very soon, an amendment to the law, if you are doing a development of over 400 units you must, at the developer’s expense, establish a police post and Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTVs),” Montague said. He added the move would support the work of officers who are stationed in close proximity to the development. “We can’t be building approximately 1,200 houses in one place and don’t put a police post there,” he said. He stated that the necessary support systems have to be put in place to ensure safety and security within communities. The staging of the town hall meeting formed part of the

GUYANA DAILY NEWS School Administrators Offer Students Advice To Avoid Violent Attacks PAGE 18

Jamaica – THE recent spike in attacks on high school students across the island has triggered reactions from several school principals who believe that incidents can be avoided or abated if students are properly advised on how to respond when caught in dangerous situations. Over the past three weeks, there have been more than a dozen reported incidents of robberies and attacks on students, which have resulted in at least one death. Fourteen-year-old Jamaica College student Nicholas Francis was stabbed to death by a thieving thug as he made his way home from school, allegedly for his cellphone. In another incident, a Camperdown High School student was hospitalised after he was attacked and stabbed by unknown assailants for his cellphone, while a student from Kingston College was treated at hospital after he was attacked and his cellphone taken from him. “…I think the first thing we need to do, which is the most important thing, is that we have to communicate to our students that the responsibility is theirs to be safe,” Calabar High School Principal Albert Corcho told the Jamaica

Mystery Motive Behind Double Killing Trinidad – A Chaguanas man and his wife were gunned down as they returned home after watching a movie on Sunday night. Police believe the gunman was hiding near the couple’s home at Kalpoo Avenue, off Pingla Road, Felicity. And as Narine Kalpoo, 56, pulled into his driveway at around 11p.m., the man opened fire. His common-law wife, 51-year-old Lutchmin Jaggernath, had exited the vehicle to open the front gate when Kalpoo was ambushed. Jaggernath, a seamstress, darted through the gates and attempted to get the back of the house. But she was shot in the head. The windows to Kalpoo’s black Nissan Almera car were shattered and he was shot multiple times about the body. Kalpoo, a building contractor, died at the scene. Police said Jaggernath collapsed about five feet away from the vehicle. The gunman ran down the track leading to the couple’s home and escaped through some bushes. His black cap was found on the roadway. Police officers responding to reports of gunshots in the area found Narine slumped in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead by District Medical Officer Babu Reddy. Jaggernath was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility in an Emergency Medical Services ambulance, but died while undergoing treatment at around 12.10am. The couple, who moved in together six years ago, had children from previous marriages. Kalpoo was a father of two boys who live with their mother in Canada. Jaggernath had three children. Relatives said the couple went to the movies with Jaggernath’s daughter, Tracy, and her boyfriend. “Tracy and her boyfriend were with them. They drop off Tracy and the boy and came home. The wife would always come out and open the gates for him to drive in. Then I just heard loud explosions and I thought it was fireworks. I reverse my car and looked in the street and realised it was gunshots. I drove out and went to

the police,” a neighbour said. Neighbours said they were shocked by the killings as Kalpoo and his wife were well respected in the community. “She came to live with him about six years ago. They always kept to themselves. The man would say good morning or Sita Ram. This is very shocking. We never expected something like this here. She lived Pierre Road and was in the process of getting a divorce,” a neighbour said. The Express was told that Jaggernath’s son and two daughters were distraught. Kalpoo’s sons were expected to arrive in Trinidad on Monday night. Investigators have obtained closed circuit camera (CCTV) footage from a camera system at the couple’s home. And several relatives were interviewed as police gather information on why the couple were targeted. Homicide Region 3 officers visited the scene and are continuing investigations. The High Court ruled last week that MPs must vote on whether the UK can start the process of leaving the EU. The UK government immediately said it would appeal to the Supreme Court, with a hearing due next month. The Lord Advocate, Scotland's most senior law officer, will now apply to be heard in the case. Prime Minister Theresa May believes that the result of the EU referendum - and existing ministerial powers - means MPs do not need to vote on the triggering of Article 50. But a panel of three High Court judges agreed with campaigners that the move would be unconstitutional, and that parliament would need to vote before the formal process of leaving the EU can begin. Scotland's first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, believes that the consent of the Scottish

Parliament and the UK's other devolved parliaments and assemblies should also be sought before Article 50 is triggered. The Scottish government had legal representatives observing the High Court case, and later said it was considering whether to become directly involved when the appeal is heard. Confirming that it would seek to intervene, Ms Sturgeon said she believed Scotland should be treated as an "equal partner" in the United Kingdom. If the Supreme Court was to allow the Scottish government's intervention and ruled against the UK government, it could mean there would have to be a vote on Article 50 in Holyrood as well a s i n We s t m i n s t e r. T h e We l s h government has also said it will seek a role in the Brexit appeal case, while the Northern Ireland Attorney General has told a court in Belfast that one of two legal challenges to Brexit should be fast-tracked directly to the Supreme Court. Ms Sturgeon stressed that she was not attempting to veto the process of England and Wales leaving the EU. But she said the "democratic wishes of

the people of Scotland and the national parliament of Scotland cannot be brushed aside as if they do not matter". Scotland voted to remain in the EU by 62% to 38% in June's referendum, while the UK as a whole voted by 52% to 48% to leave. Ms Sturgeon has pledged to do all she can to protect Scotland's place in Europe, and to maintain its membership of the single market. As if Theresa May didn't have enough on her plate following last week's High Court ruling forcing the government to give MPs a say before Brexit is triggered, now the Scottish government has piled in. In effect it has said if MPs are going to be given a say, the Scottish Parliament should also have to give its approval. The difficulty for Mrs May is that she knows the Scottish Parliament is overwhelmingly opposed to Brexit and her fear will be that Nicola Sturgeon is in effect threatening to blow Brexit out of the water. Scotland's first minister insists she is not playing the veto card. She respects the right of the rest of the UK to leave the EU, but wants to protect the interests of Scotland which voted against Brexit. It may be she is simply trying to increase her leverage over Theresa May to try and secure a particular Brexit deal for Scotland something Mrs May has already ruled out. But there is another problem and it is on delay - the danger that Brexit gets snarled up in the courts. We have already had the High Court ruling - the Supreme Court will decide on the appeal in January - and now Scottish lawyers are piling in and the danger is the timetable of triggering Brexit by March gets put through the legal shredder. "And triggering Article 50 will inevitably deprive Scottish people and Scottish businesses of rights and freedoms which they currently enjoy. "It simply cannot be right that those rights can be removed by the UK government on the say-so of a prime minister without parliamentary debate, scrutiny or consent." She also urged the prime minister to "live up to her promise to treat Scotland as an equal partner in the United Kingdom and listen to the will of the people of Scotland". Answering questions from journalists, the first minister was pressed on the basis on which the Scottish government will seek to involve itself in the case. She said: "If there is a need for legislation in the House of Commons that raises the question of legislative consent, not just in the Scottish Parliament but in Wales and Northern Ireland as well. "If that is going to be an issue that the court is looking at... then it is

Scottish government is formally represented to make sure that the views that we would take around these processes are heard by the court." The first minister said she would not go into the detail of what the Lord Advocate will argue, but made it clear she personally believes the UK government should seek approval for triggering Article 50 th r o u g h a leg is lativ e consent motion at Holyrood. She also said she believes there are those both in the Welsh and Northern Irish governments who would take a similar view about their own parliaments. Scottish Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats have warned Ms Sturgeon against using the result to push for a second vote on Scottish independence. Scottish Labour said it supported the objective of getting the "best possible deal for Scotland", which it said meant "remaining part of the UK and retaining a close relationship with the EU." The party's Europe spokesman, Lewis Macdonald, said: "Rather than spending the next six weeks appealing to the Supreme Court, the UK government's time would perhaps be better spent getting on with outlining a clear plan for Brexit." Scottish Greens MSP Ross Greer said it was

And Scottish Lib Dem leader Wi l l i e R e n n i e a l s o welcomed Ms Sturgeon seeking to join the legal action against what he described as the "unjust and undemocratic" use of the Royal Prerogative to invoke Article 50. He added: "Theresa May could end all this and simply accept that there must be a democratic vote before Article 50 is invoked. However she chooses to waste time and money fighting the decision made so she can impose an unwanted hard Brexit on the United Kingdom." (BBC)

McDonald's Sues Florence For 18m Euros For Blocking Restaurant

McDonald's is suing the city of Florence, Italy(GETTY IMAGES) McDonald's is suing Florence for €18m after it was blocked from opening a restaurant on one of the Italian city's most historic plazas. The fast-food giant had its plans for an outlet on the Piazza del Duomo rejected by Florence's mayor in June. The decision was upheld in July by a technical panel in charge of preserving the city's ancient heart. But McDonald's, which modified its proposals to fit with city guidelines, has now launched a bid for damages. The chain is claiming it has been discriminated against, and wants to recoup the €17.8m (£15.9m; $19.7m) it

estimates it will lose over the next 18 years, according to Italian newspaper Firenze Today. Right to say no It argues it put forward a plan to "operate respectfully towards the local policies, even accepting to introduce typical local products in our offer, as requested from the local commerce regulation". "We completely agree that the cultural and artistic heritage and the Italian historical town centres have to be protected and guaranteed, as well as the traditions and the historical small shops, but we cannot accept discriminatory regulations that damage the freedom of private initiative without being advantageous to anyone,"

McDonald's told the BBC in a statement. But Florence's mayor Dario Nardella says they were not prejudiced in rejecting the bid to open a branch on the piazza, famous for its Gothic and Renaissance architecture. He told the city council earlier this year: "McDonald's has the right to submit an application, because this is permitted under the law, but we also have the right to say no." This is the second high profile spat over an Italian location this year for McDonalds. Last month it was reported that cardinals at the Vatican had been angered by plans to open a branch in a piazza next to Saint Peter's Square. (BBC)

Delhi Pollution: Face Masks Run Out As Residents Panic have sold hundreds of thousands of face masks. Josh Hoffman, a US

People in Delhi say it's their right to breathe clean air(GETTY IMAGES) Surging pollution levels are driving panicked residents of the Indian capital, Delhi, to queue up for face masks, leading to shortages across the city, as the BBC's Vikas Pandey reports. "I am ready to wait for an entire day, but I am not going without buying masks today," an angry customer shouts at a shop assistant in Delhi's Khan Market shopping centre. Others join the commotion as shop assistants struggle to pacify angry customers, some of whom have been waiting for more than two hours to buy masks. The shop, which sells the high-end Vogmasks brand, has no stocks left and customers have been told to wait until the afternoon. The masks generally come in a variety of colours and designs, but with stocks selling out, people are happy to settle for whatever they can get their hands on. Jai Dhar Gupta, who imports Vogmasks in South Asia, says that he has been struggling to meet the demand this year. "We are getting stocks from our shops in places like Singapore and Hong Kong, but we still cannot meet the demand," Mr Gupta, who is also an environmental activist, adds. "We

masks in the past 10 days because the pollution levels are much higher than we had expected this year." And the queues are not just on the ground. Online retailers are also facing massive demand and delivery times have lengthened from a few days to a few weeks. It's not difficult to understand people's desperation because Delhi has witnessed alarming levels of pollution in recent days. Levels of tiny particulate matter (known as PM 2.5) that enter deep into the lungs reached as high as 800 micrograms per cubic metre last week. That is 30 times a mean guideline set by the World Health Organisation (WHO) of 25 micrograms per cubic metre on average over a 24-hour period. Schools have been shut and people have been advised to work from home. Most people said that they had no other choice but to buy face masks and air purifiers. "What else can I do? The government doesn't do anything to protect us, so I will do whatever I can to protect my family. I am starting with buying masks for my entire family," Mrityunjay Kumar, a lawyer, says. 'Chemical warfare' Mr Gupta shares Mr Kumar's frustration. "The government has failed to take simple steps like banning firecrackers, diesel cars and penalising farmers who set agricultural waste on fire," Mr Gupta adds. "I feel like somebody has waged chemical warfare in the city." Foreign nationals living in the city are also queuing up at shops to buy

national who has been living in Delhi for extended periods, says that "this year the air been particularly toxic". "I ride a motorbike and I thought a face mask may help me and that is why I am standing in this line," he says. But can face masks and air purifiers be the solution to Delhi's pollution woes? "No, these things only bring temporary relief and not everybody can afford them. We need permanent solutions and it starts with educating the public about the harmful impact of breathing this air," says environmental activist Barun Aggarwal, who also imports and sells Cambridge Masks in India. He adds that people "don't understand that toxic air can cause lung cancer and other fatal ailments". "We need to educate the public, so they take actions like not buying diesel cars and cutting trees," he says. Mr Aggarwal agrees that the air quality worsens in winters in Delhi every year, but adds that "it's not that we breathe clean air for the rest of the year". His firm is also facing a massive demand for face masks, but he is "not happy" about it. "You may find this odd. But I think we need to look beyond air purifiers and masks. Take air purifiers for examples, the filters in them choke in a year and become unusable. In most cases, they are burnt, creating more pollution," he says. The government needs to find permanent solutions to Delhi's pollution problems, otherwise queues at face mask shops won't go anywhere anytime soon. (BBC)

Mosul Battle: Experts Probe IS Mass Grave At Hamam Al-Alil

It is not yet known if the victims are civilians or security personnel(EPA) Iraqi forensic experts are investigating a mass grave that was discovered by troops advancing towards the Islamic State-held city of Mosul. The Iraqi military has said the grave, in the grounds of an agricultural college in the town of Hamam al-Alil, contains about 100 decapitated bodies. Most have been reduced to skeletons, so it is unclear who the victims were. IS militants have carried out many mass killings and have been accused of fresh atrocities in the area in recent weeks. They are being forced to retreat to Mosul, the last major IS urban stronghold in Iraq, in an offensive by pro-government forces that began on 17 October. Iraqi troops found the mass grave after noticing a strong smell while advancing into the town, about 30km (19 miles) south of Mosul, on Monday. The BBC's Karen Allen visited the site on Tuesday, and says it is on a piece of wasteland beside the agricultural college and

resembles a rubbish tip. Our correspondent's movement was limited because the area is close to the frontline and almost certainly boobytrapped, but she saw what she thought looked like three or four decapitated bodies. It was not immediately known if the victims were security forces personnel or civilians. But video footage from the Associated Press showed a soldier holding up a child's stuffed animal found at the grave. A member of the Nineveh provincial council, Abdul Rahman alWaggaa, said IS militants had used the agricultural college as "a killing field" for hundreds of people in the days before troops, police and militiamen retook the town. "They would torture them inside and then take them out of the neighbourhood and either shoot them or slit their throats," he told Reuters news agency. A former English teacher from Hamam al-Alil, Riyad Ahmed, meanwhile said he had seen IS militants dragging civilians to a makeshift jail near his home and then sending them in the middle of the night to be killed.

In 2014, the jihadists carried out mass killings of security forces personnel and members of ethnic and religious minorities as they swept across northern Iraq after taking control of Mosul, boasting about them in photos and videos circulated online. Since the operation to recapture Mosul was launched three weeks ago, the UN has received reports that militants have carried out fresh atrocities. On Tuesday, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said it was investigating whether the grave at Hamam al-Alil was connected to the alleged killing of 50 former police officers at the same agricultural college last month. Spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani added that IS militants had also reportedly abducted 295 former Iraqi Security Forces personnel areas west of Mosul in the past week, and forcibly transferred 1,500 families from Hamam al-Alil to Mosul airport with the apparent intention to use them as human shields. Also on Tuesday, Kurdish Peshmerga fighters reportedly took complete control of the town of Bashiqa, about 12km north-east of Mosul, a day after launching an assault to retake it. Jabar Yawar, secretary-general of the Kurdistan Regional Government's ministry of Peshmerga affairs, told AFP news agency that forces were sweeping the town for militants hiding inside buildings and tunnels. At least 13 were killed while trying to escape on Tuesday, he said. Meanwhile, Iraqi special forces and army units continued to clear eastern districts of Mosul, a week after they entering the city for the first time in two years. (BBC)

Prince Harry Condemns Press 'Abuse' Of Girlfriend

(PA) Prince Harry has confirmed US actress Meghan Markle is his girlfriend, in a statement from Kensington Palace attacking the media for subjecting her to a "wave of abuse and harassment". The statement said the couple were "a few months into a relationship" and it was "not right" that Ms Markle should be subjected to such treatment. It said the prince rarely took formal action over "fictional stories". "But the past week has seen a line crossed," it added. In recent days a number of newspapers have carried front page stories about the 35-year-old actress, best known for playing Rachel Zane in the TV drama Suits. The statement issued by the prince's communications secretary said: "His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. "Some of this has been very public - the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments. "Some of it has been hidden from the public - the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life." The 32-year-old prince has long had an uneasy relationship with the press, having grown up aware of the impact that intense media intrusion had on the life of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. When he was 20, he was caught up in a scuffle with a paparazzi photographer outside a London nightclub. In 2012, naked photographs of him in a Las Vegas hotel room were published online and on newspaper front pages, prompting a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission. But he has also attracted positive coverage of his

charitable interests and military service. This is a cri de coeur from a prince whose view of the media was formed after his mother died in a car crash as paparazzi photographers were pursuing her. Prince Harry has long argued that the line between his public and his personal life has become almost non-existent. The fifth in line to the throne is now using the media he at times despises to focus on what he says is the plight of his current girlfriend. It's a path followed in the past by his brother when Kate Middleton (as she was then) was the subject of intense interest. But Prince William's appeals were never quite so passionate or quite so detailed. And in going public, Prince Harry has confirmed his relationship of a few months with Meghan Markle. There'll be those in Buckingham Palace who'll appreciate his pain, but who'll question the wisdom of issuing this statement. Prince Harry is appealing to the better judgement of newspaper editors and their readers. Will they listen? Will we listen? BBC royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell said editors in the UK might abide by the prince's requests but it was unlikely to have an impact on foreign publishers as there was a considerable financial interest in pursuing stories about the relationship. Our correspondent said the statement appeared to be a "cry from the heart" and showed how clearly Prince Harry was determined to protect this relationship after previous girlfriends had endured similar media attention. In 2014, the Press Complaints Commission became involved again when Prince Harry and his then girlfriend Cressida Bonas complained the paper had published two photographs of them at the Royal Albert Hall that intruded into their privacy. 'Statement unprecedented' The statement said Prince Harry was worried about Ms Markle's safety and that he "is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her". It added: "It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms Markle should be subjected to such a storm. "He knows commentators will say this is 'the price she has to pay' and that 'this is all part of the game'. He strongly disagrees. This is not a game - it is her life and his." The statement ended with Prince Harry appealing for "those in the press who have been driving this story [to] pause and reflect before any further damage is done". Camilla Tominey, the royal editor of the Sunday Express, said Prince Harry's statement was "unprecedented" and appeared to have been as much prompted by coverage on the internet as in the press. "There is Fleet Street and then there is the internet," she told the BBC. "There are no editors to be held accountable, they publish what they like and you get commentary, not just from journalists but from members of the public laying into this girl, writing some hateful stuff." German Police Arrest Five In Raid On 'IS Network’

Police raided flats in northern and western Germany and searched a mosque at Hildesheim(GETTY IMAGES) Five people linked to the so-called Islamic State (IS) group have been arrested in co-ordinated raids in

Germany, including a senior Islamist figure, reports say. Flats were raided in northern and western Germany and a mosque was searched near Hanover. Among those arrested was an Iraqi who goes by the alias Abu Walaa, or "the preacher without a face". Germany's NDR TV has identified him as Ahmad Abdelazziz A. The raids came as a result of information from a 22-year-old jihadist who spent several months with IS in Syria before fleeing to Turkey, it said. Before returning to Germany in late September, the man, named Anil O, gave an interview in which he referred to Abu Walaa as "IS's number one in Germany". All five men held are

suspected of recruiting jihadists for IS and providing help for their journey to the conflict zone. They deny any link to terrorism. The mosque in Hildesheim at the centre of Tuesday's police raids has been highlighted by authorities before as heavily involved in radical Salafist Islam. Abu Walaa, who was arrested just outside Hildesheim, became known as "the preacher without a face" because of a series of internet videos in which he appeared clothed in black with his back to the camera. Last week, police in Berlin arrested a Syrian man on suspicion of receiving instructions from IS to carry out an attack in Germany. (BBC)

China Well Rescue: Race To Reach Boy Trapped In Hebei China.

Rescuers have spent days trying to rescue the boy who fell into a dry well(THE PAPER) Dozens of rescuers in China are trying to reach a ďŹ ve-year-old boy who is trapped deep down an abandoned well. Some 60 excavators and 100 dump trucks are being used in the search. The boy fell down the 40m dry well in Baoding, Hebei province on Sunday morning. He had been helping harvest vegetables, his father told Chinese media. The child's condition is unknown. Oxygen, food and water have been supplied. The 30cm-diameter well is too narrow for an adult to retrieve him. After two days of careful digging, rescuers have dug only 13m down the metal shaft, which threatens to collapse at any moment. An 800square metre work area has been cleared to facilitate rescue attempts, a volunteer told The Paper, a Shanghai-based news website. The well had been left unused for ďŹ ve

years and there were no warning signs. Visual imagery has so far failed to locate the boy. Many locals volunteered to help in the rescue, rushing to the scene after learning about the accident on WeChat, a popular communication app in

Most netizens sent good wishes to the boy. "It was saddening to read about such news. As a mother, it was heartbreaking to see a child fall into a well. I hope the child will be alive and alive," one user called 80 Hou Bu Huai wrote. Some wondered who was to blame. Weibo user S_AND_YY wrote: "Parents have to take care of their children and it's dangerous everywhere." But not everyone agreed. "The kid is in primary one already. Do his parents have to spend every minute with him? Is it possible? Shouldn't the well be the focus? If the well didn't exist, would this accident happen?" wrote another user. Falling ground water levels in Hebei province have left many wells without water, reports say. (BBC)

Migrant Crisis: Hungary Mps Reject Orban Anti-refugee Bill following the failure of his 2 October referendum. Now

Members of Jobbik - the radical-right challengers to Mr Orban's Fidesz party - held aloft a banner during the vote, reading: "The traitor is the one who allows terrorists into the country for money"(AFP) Hungary's parliament has rejected an attempt by Prime Minister Viktor Orban to block the settlement of refugees. His ruling Fidesz party failed to attract the two opposition votes necessary for a two-thirds majority in parliament. The bill had sought to rebuff an EU-set quota scheme that would relocate 1,294 refugees in Hungary. It was the latest move in Mr Orban's anti-EU and anti-migrant drive, say correspondents. But he was thwarted by the anti-immigration Jobbik party, which normally would have been viewed as a natural supporter of the bill but abstained. Jobbik had demanded Mr Orban scrap a cash-forresidency bond scheme allowing wealthy foreigners to buy special state bonds for €300,000 ($330,000) giving them the right to live in Hungary. Jobbik argued the immigration ban should apply to all foreigners. Mr Orban refused, calling the move "blackmail". Mr Orban called the vote in parliament after a divisive referendum on 2 October, again over the EU's 2015 resettlement scheme to relocate 160,000 refugees across the bloc. Of those who voted, 98% - or 3.3m voters - supported Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban's call to block the quotas. But only 40.4% of voters cast valid ballots, short of the required 50% threshold. Nevertheless, he declared victory and immediately called the constitutional vote. This is the second blow in a month for Viktor Orban,

he can be expected to turn his guns on the Jobbik party for their "treachery" for refusing to support the constitutional amendment. Jobbik were prepared in advance for that accusation. As the results of the amendment vote were announced, Jobbik deputies unrolled a banner with the words: "The traitor is the one who allows terrorists into the country for money." According to Hungarian reports, a Saudi citizen who once had business contacts with Osama Bin Laden and who is also on an FBI wanted list, bought residency in Hungary under the bond scheme. Hungary has already refused to accept 1,294 asylum seekers requested by the European Commission. It has taken the Commission to the European Court of Justice over the case, with a verdict expected next year. If Hungary loses, it will have no choice but to accept the 1,294. If the constitutional amendment had passed now, it would have blocked any future attempts by the EU to impose quotas on Hungary. Jobbik has been jockeying with the Socialists for position as Hungary's second biggest party. Mr Orban's defeat in Tuesday's vote is an unusual blow for a man whose party won a two-thirds majority in parliament when he first came to power in 2010 and has since enacted six constitutional amendments. The setback is likely to herald a period of increasing rivalry between his Fidesz party and Jobbik. Immigration is a key battleground, and the constitutional vote was a chance for Jobbik to flex its muscles, correspondents say. "We are ready to vote for the amendment of the constitution but we are not ready for partial solutions," Jobbik leader Gabor Vona said in October. “We can only support a solution which creates Hungary's real security." Thousands of non-EU citizens - many from the Middle East, China and the former Soviet Union - have bought residency in Hungary with the "foreigner bonds". Jobbik says more people have come into the country under that scheme than would have come under the EU migrant quota. But it says it remains willing to support Fidesz's constitutional amendment if it backs down and scraps the scheme. (BBC)

Toblerone Triangle Change onUpsets Fans the change. Lainey Ireson

The 150g Toblerone features larger gaps between its distinctive triangles A decision to space out the distinctive triangular chocolate chunks in two Toblerone bars sold in the UK has upset fans who say that they do mind the gap. The product's makers, US-based Mondelez International, said it had changed the design to reduce the weight of what were 400g and 170g bars. Some consumers have described the move as "the wrong decision" and said the bigger spaces looked "stupid". Mondelez said the move was down to a rise in the cost of ingredients. In a statement on the Toblerone Facebook page, the company said it had to make a decision between changing the look of the bars or raising the price. The move has resulted in the weight of the 400g bars being reduced to 360g and the 170g bars to 150g, while the size of the

packaging has remained the same. It said: "We chose to change the shape to keep the product affordable for our customers." 'Why the big gap?' But consumers took to Toblerone's Facebook page to question why the company had decided to make the gaps between the triangles bigger, rather than reducing the length of the bars. Lee Yarker said: "Fair enough reducing the weight of the bar, but why the big gap in between segments? Looks stupid imo [in my opinion], could have just made the bar shorter and kept the original design." Philip Joseph wrote: "It was the wrong decision. It looks like a really underhanded thing to do. "You buy a bar expecting a normal bar and it looks like you are getting half the chocolate." Cathy White added: "It looks dreadful. Think you should've reduced the length and kept the chunky triangles." However, other consumers praised the company for making a public announcement

wrote: "Sadly whatever you chose won't please everyone but as Toblerone is such a great product I'm happy that you've explained - a lot of companies wouldn't be so mindful." Mondelez said that "like many other companies, we are experiencing higher costs for numerous ingredients". It added: "We carry these costs for as long as possible, but to ensure Toblerone remains on-shelf, is affordable and retains the triangular shape, we have had to reduce the weight of just two of our bars in the UK, from the wider range of available Toblerone products." Other food manufacturers have previously announced rises in their product prices, blaming the falling value of the pound following the UK's decision to leave the EU. 'Not a result of Brexit' A spokeswoman for Mondelez acknowledged that the foreign exchange rate was currently "not favourable", but added: "This change wasn't done as a result of Brexit." However, she was unable to clarify whether the change in shape affected only bars sold in the UK and not the rest of Europe. Walkers and Birds Eye have both said they are set to raise the prices of some items following the drop in the UK exchange rate post-Brexit. In October, a dispute broke out between Tesco and Unilever after the food brand said it was raising prices in Britain to compensate for the fall in the pound. (BBC)

Rurik Jutting, British Banker, Guilty Of Hong Kong Murders

Jutting denied charges of murder(GETTY IMAGES) British banker Rurik Jutting has been found guilty of murdering two Indonesian women in Hong Kong, in a case that has gripped the city. A jury took around four hours to find an expressionless Jutting, who denied murder but admitted manslaughter, guilty on both counts. He was sentenced to life in prison for the killings of Sumarti Ningsih and Seneng Mujiasih. Their mutilated bodies were found in Jutting's apartment in November 2014. Murder carries a mandatory life sentence in Hong Kong. In a statement read out by his lawyer, Jutting expressed remorse for the killings and accepted his actions were "horrific". “I remain haunted daily both by memory of my actions... and by knowledge of the acute pain I have caused their loved ones, not least Ningsih's young son," he said. "The evil I have [done] cannot be remedied by me in words or actions. Nevertheless, for whatever it may be

worth, to Ningsih's family and friends, and Mujiasih's family and friends, I am sorry, I am sorry beyond words." But Deputy High Court Judge Michael Stuart-Moore, who noted the trial had been "made to dredge into depths of depravity" over Jutting's actions, said he did not accept the apology as he sentenced him to life in prison. Mr Stuart-Moore said he believed Jutting posed an "immense danger... if he is ever again given his liberty beyond the prison gates". "On each offence I pass a concurrent life term... You'll go to prison for life," he told Jutting, who was escorted from the courtroom by three officers. Ms Mujiasih's family said they were "devastated" and that they hoped Jutting could be executed "if possible", but Ms Ningsih's mother Suratmi welcomed the sentence. "I feel that the right decision has been made, he tortured my child," she told the BBC. "I lost my daughter and I will never be able to meet her again, the pain and agony of that will never go away.

He is an evil man. "I want him to take responsibility for what he did and ... financially support her son and our family." There was a clap, a single clap, then repeated, from someone in the public area as the jury's verdict was read out. Rurik Jutting, a much trimmer, tidier version of the bloated and bearded man who was arrested two years ago, sat in the dock with no expression. He knows he is probably never coming out of jail. Representatives of the families of his two victims were in court. It was standing room only. Neither his parents nor brother were there. The 31-year-old bowed his head slightly as a statement he'd written was read out. The man described as extremely narcissistic said he accepted the judgement and he was "sorry". Judge Michael Stuart-Moore agreed for an application to be filed to allow Jutting to serve his sentence in the UK. Jutting had pleaded not guilty to murder, but guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility, due to his narcissistic personality disorder and sexual sadism, as well as his increasing drug and alcohol abuse. Lawyers said his disorders stemmed from sexual abuse at boarding school in the UK, and the trauma of his father's attempted suicide when Jutting was 16. However, the prosecution argued that he was able to form judgements and exercise self control, citing the fact that he had filmed Ms Ningsih's torture on his phone. He also filmed himself discussing the killings and his sexual fantasies. The videos were shown to the jury of four women and five men during the trial. (BBC)

A Divided America Goes To The Polls

USA Presidential Elections 2016 It is voting day for America. A tense atmosphere dominates the globe. A campaign that has been keeping the planet at the edge of a ‘Panic attack’ for over 6 months, will come to an end after dusk. The last poll is expected to close its doors in 5hrs, 19 minutes and 48seconds, then America will speak. The candidate with the majority of the electoral and popular votes will be announced and this ‘seemly’ eternal nightmare will be over, or will start over. Now, is all up to the voters. During the last week of the elections, several states sponsored by religious organizations, have been promoting a varied spectrum of activities, in order to stimulate the assistance of voters to the polls. ‘Every Vote counts’ and ‘Souls to the Polls’ have been some of the mottos used to build confidence on the voters, and the weight that each and every ballot carries. Why the lack of confidence of voters? There are 320 million people in the USA, and out of this just two have the chance to become USA President. But this year’s candidates are the

most unpopular in modern American h i s t o r y. T h i s i s d u e t o t h e i r controversial background in the political and social ‘arena’. Despite all odds, today one of them will be chosen president. But how did this happened? What helped Hillary and Trump remain as the duo to fight for the presidential ‘throne’? The answer lays at the beginning of this tedious process. The candidates aren’t chosen by the general public, but by the results given at the end of the primary elections. The primary elections are organized previous to the presidential ‘run’ and by theparties that the candidates represent. In this case the Democrat and the Republican Party. This are two private institutions with their own rules and their private agendas. According to local reports, only 18% of the people voted in the primaries, and only half of them chose either Clinton or Trump. The rest voted for other candidates. Republicans VS Democrats This two parties are greatly divided

by the principles and ideologies that they represent. According to recent studies, this too parties have been moving further apart over the past two decades. The Democrats have become more liberals and the Republicans more conservatives. Division that have been carving a destructive social impact, decelerating the ability of tolerance among individuals. Segregation, sexism and racism are vivid social issues in this rich and diverse country. A country that enjoys of a variety of cultures, but lacks in the ability to embrace them or even understand them, turning the ‘Land of freedom’ into a battlefield, were the ‘different’ is denominated exotic or simply not accepted. Ideologies divide masses, and this elections are the tangible and sad representation of it. Today the United States is a country divided voting for a ‘ruler’. A country that is been suffering the effects of social deterioration. Its true nuances have been shown, and the world is not happy. With the polls accumulating votes by the minutes, expectations are still a luxury. Up to yesterday Hilary was only 48% ahead on the polls, against the 44% shown by Trumps supporters. Is been a tight race, and is still tight. At this point anything could happen, and those are not encouraging statistics for the interest of the international community. WICB Demand Tax For T20 Stars

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has implemented a fee amouting to 20 percent of the salaries paid to players that are granted No Objection Certificates (NOC) to compete in various T20 leagues around the world. NOC’s are required from the member nations of internationally active players before they can participate in the lucrative leagues. At present several West Indies players are granted NOCs to participate in various leagues, the list including T20 stars Chris Gayle, Darren Bravo, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine.

The amount of expected to be collected from the boards requesting the NOCs, but could impact how much players are p a i d . T h e documents, issued per competition, were previously free of charge, but based on recent communication from the WICB, through Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michael Muirhead to allrounder Kieron Pollard are now set to attract a levy. “The Board of Directors of WICB, has taken a policy decision on the issuance of No Objection C e r t i fi c a t e s ( N O C ’s ) a n d h a s communicated its stance to all ICC Full Members CEO’s and Presidents. The WICB will levy a charge for the granting of an NOC for West Indian Cricketers seeking a release to participate in Leagues outside the jurisdiction of the West Indies.

This will be an amount equivalent to 20% of the player fee (as defined in the player contract) that is actually paid to the relevant player.” Muirhead went on to explain that the move came as the WICB looked to a large extent to recoup initial investments made on players. “The influx of various domestic T20 tournaments raises an interesting opportunity for a player to significantly maximise his earnings.

WICB however, having invested in developing a player’s talent, is not able to realize a return on its investment if the player is not available to play in local tournaments, which would allow lesser experienced players the opportunity to face more experienced and skilled opposition, thereby improving on the standard and competitiveness of the domestic tournament. In addition, the player is unavailable to mentor and develop younger players and to otherwise contribute to the overall growth of the game and its development infrastructure.” (SportsMax)

Herath Joins Elite Group With Five-wicket Haul Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath has now taken fivewicket hauls against all nine Test-playing nations. Rangana Herath became only the third bowler to claim a five-wicket haul against all Test-playing nations to put Sri Lanka firmly on course for a series victory over Zimbabwe. Muttiah Muralitharan and Dale Steyn were the only other men to have completed the set before veteran spinner Herath took 5-89 as Zimbabwe were all out for 272 in reply to 504 on day three of the second Test at Harare Sports Club. Stand-in captain Herath was well supported by Kusal Perera (3-51) and Suranga Lakmal (2-55) on Tuesday, with Zimbabwe losing their last five wickets for only 19 runs after Brian Chari top scored with 80. The in-form Dimuth Karunaratne was unbeaten on 54 and the tourists were 102-4 when stumps were drawn, leading by 334 to leave Zimbabwe surely facing a 2-0 whitewash. Lakmal and Herath applied intense pressure when Zimbabwe resumed on 126-2, with just seven runs added in as many overs before the former had Craig Ervine (64) well caught by Karunaratne at first slip. Chari dug in, but found runs hard to come by and rode his luck until his 158-ball knock - which included two sixes and a further nine boundaries - came to end when Herath bowled him through the gate. Sean Williams (58) scored more freely, dispatching Lakmal for a cover drive to the boundary and reverse sweeping Herath for four then getting a life on 29 when Kusal Perera missed a stumping off the bowling of his namesake Dilruwan.

Zimbabwe were 210-5 when Herath got rid of Malcolm Waller (18) just before lunch, but a positive Williams brought up his half-century by guiding Lahiru Kumara over the slips to the third man boundary. Williams' dismissal soon after sparked a Zimbabwe collapse from 253-5 to 272 all out in the space of just seven overs, with Herath matching a feat achieved by only South Africa paceman Steyn and former team-mate Muralitharan by trapping Carl Mumba leg before. Mumba took 3-31 to reduce the tourists to 84-4, but there was no shifting Karunaratne despite a couple of mix-ups with suspect running between the wickets as he made a third halfcentury in four innings to strengthen Sri Lanka's grip on the Test. 'He's Got To Learn The Rules FIrst' - Mako Vunipola Jokes Over Billy's NFL Interest

After Billy Vunipola talked about potentially playing in the NFL, brother Mako said: "I think he is just running his mouth a little bit." Mako Vunipola has suggested brother Billy is highly unlikely to be seen in the

NFL any time soon. Last week, the younger Vunipola expressed an interest in trying his hand at American Football, while acknowledging any switch of sport would not happen in the near future. "He's got to learn the rules first," quipped Mako in an interview with BBC Sport. "I'm excited for him if he does get the chance, but it's a long time away and he's still got a lot of things ahead of him first. "So I think he is just running his mouth a little bit." The Vunipola brothers have each starred for England under Eddie Jones and earned fulsome praise

from the national coach. However, prop Mako is sure he still has much more to offer. "The biggest message is not to be happy about where we are," said the Saracens star. "There is more accountability and responsibility on the individual. Eddie Jones keeps sending me texts if I need a nudge. "We want to be the best we can be. For me it's about improving one per cent in every area." England face South Africa at Twickenham on Saturday, before further home Tests against Fiji, Argentina and Australia. (SportsMax)

Paredes Suffers Ankle Ligament Tear Paredes suffered the problem after coming on as a second-half substitute in the 3-0 triumph at Stadio Olimpico, but was able to finish the match. However, tests have revealed the 22year-old suffered a partial tear of his ankle ligament and Roma do not expect him to return for a least two weeks. That means the midfielder will miss the clash with Bologna and he could be a doubt for Roma's Europa League showdown with Viktoria Plzen. Roma will be without Leandro Paredes for at least two weeks after suffering a partial ligament tear of his ankle ligament. Leandro Paredes is expected to miss Roma's trip to Atalanta on November 24 after suffering an ankle ligament injury during Sunday's win over Bologna.

"Leandro Paredes underwent tests on Tuesday which revealed a partial lateral ligament tear in his right ankle," read a statement. "The midfielder was caught by an opponent during Sunday's Serie A victory over Bologna. "His recovery time is estimated at around two weeks." (SportsMax)

Wickets Aplenty But A Point To Prove In India: Stuart Broad's 100 Tests In Opta Numbers

We look at some standout figures relating to Stuart Broad's Test career as the paceman prepares to feature in his 100th five-day match. Stuart Broad is set to become the 14th England player to feature in 100 Tests when he takes to the field in the opening five-day match against India in Rajkot on Wednesday. With the help of Opta, we highlight some key numbers that tell the story of the 30year-old's impressive career to date. 360 - Broad's tally of 360 Test wickets, at an average of 28.5, places him third on England's all-time list, behind Ian Botham (383) and James Anderson (463).

84 - Unsurprisingly, given the number of Ashes battles he has participated in, Broad has taken more wickets against Australia (84) than any other nation. 23.3 - However, his best average has come against upcoming opponents India. In 12 Tests against them, he has claimed 46 wickets at 23.3. 2 - Only two of those scalps have come outside England, with Broad having struggled to make an impact on his three previous Test outings in India. 8-15 - Broad famously returned career-best figures of 815 at Trent Bridge in the 2015 Ashes, as England skittled Australia for 60 on an extraordinary first morning. 2,647 - In addition to his 360 wickets in Tests, Broad has scored 2,647 runs in the premier format, including a top score of 169 against Pakistan in a 2010 Lord's Test later marred by revelations of spot-fixing. 9/12/2007 - Almost nine years have passed since Broad made his Test bow for England, against Sri Lanka in Colombo. 2 - Broad is the only man with two Test hat-tricks for England. His first came against India at Trent Bridge in 2011, before he repeated the feat against Sri Lanka at Headingley two years ago. (SportsMax)

Kane hopes To Carry Derby Form Into Scotland Showdown Scoring in the derby against Arsenal is perfect preparation for Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane ahead of facing Scotland. Harry Kane will be hoping his expertise in local derbies transfers from the club stage to international football when England host Scotland at Wembley on Friday. Tottenham striker Kane returned from injury to score his fifth goal in four Premier League meetings with Arsenal, netting the equaliser from the penalty spot in a 1-1 draw at Emirates Stadium. Another tussle for bragging rights looms this week, when Gordon Strachan's team and their vociferous supporters - the Tartan Army - arrive in London for an eagerly anticipated World Cup qualifier. And centre-forward Kane, addressing a news conference, agreed with suggestions his exploits in the north London derby might prove to be ideal preparation for tackling Scotland. "You could say that. [From] one rivalry to another," he said. "We all know how big the game is on Friday, we're all looking forward to it very much. It's going to be an amazing atmosphere and a great competition on the pitch. "All we can do is take preparations like Sunday into international games and that's what I'll be doing. "I seem to do well in games where [there are] rivals. With England, it'll be no different if I'm picked to play. I'll be going into that game full of passion, full of pride." England's interim head coach Gareth Southgate played when the Three Lions defeated Scotland 2-0 at the old Wembley in the group stage of Euro 1996. That game, memorable for Paul Gascoigne's brilliant goal, was sure to have featured when the temporary boss familiarised his squad with the highlights of past clashes against England's neighbours. "We had a meeting last night, where he showed us a montage of previous games, all the moments," Kane said. "It's great to look back and see all that, just to feel the importance of the game, as players, staff and fans. We know what it means, Gareth knows what it means." Despite having played under Southgate with England's Under-21s, Kane stopped short of confirming the players would be trying to earn the 46-year-old the top job on a

long-term basis. "We're just concentrating on winning the game," he said. "Gareth's going to do everything he can to win the game. All we can do is our jobs on the pitch." England go into the match top of Group F in UEFA qualifying, two points ahead of Lithuania and Slovenia, with Scotland one point further back. (SportsMax)

Pollard To Mull Legal Options In NOC Wrangle West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard will mull his legal options after being held up by a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) ahead of the CSA (Cricket South Africa) T20 Challenge. Pollard was expected to fly to South Africa ahead of the tournament’s start on Saturday, but has now been grounded after recent policy changes led to the document not being signed off on. On Tuesday the player confirmed the developments, but declined to say a lot on the issue. “If this needs to go legal and stuff like that, I don’t want to say anything just yet to jeopardise anything else. What I will say is that I have been refused the NOC at this point in time and I was supposed to be flying (to South Africa) this afternoon.” New stipulations from the WICB will require a fee amounting to 20 percent of the salaries offered to players from boards requesting their participation in various T20 tournaments. According to reports Pollard has not been granted the permission by the WICB to participate in the CSA (Cricket South Africa) T20 Challenge as the South Africa board is yet to respond to new stipulations. The player, who was dropped from the regional squad last month following a disappointing tour of Pakistan, has been highly involved in a highly publicized spat with the board since then. Pollard who was predictably left off the list of players offered retainer contracts by the WICB has previously been granted several NOCs by the body. Currently 17 regional players are contracted with seven teams, to play in the Bangladesh Premier League, which starts today. They are Carlos Brathwaite, Rayad Emrit (Barisol Bulls), Chris Gayle, Dwayne Smith (Chittagong Vikings), Jason Holder, Rovman Powell, Marlon Samuels (Comilla Victorians), Dwyane Bravo, Evin Lewis, Andre Russell (Dhaka Dynamites), Andre Fletcher, Kevon Cooper, Nicholas Pooran, Lendl Simmons (Khulna Titans), Darren Sammy, Kesrick Williams (Rajashahi Kings) and Gidron Pope (Rangpur

Riders). According to reports carried in the T&T Guardians, who quotes WICB communications manager Carole Beckford the NOCs for those players were signed due to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) agreeing to the release fees. (SportsMax)

West Indies Players Association Opposes WICB Levy On Player Contracts In the end, it compromises the standard of the WICB’s international team and that team’s performance internationally. The primacy of international cricket is threatened.” As such the WICB says it will now levy a charge for the granting of an NOC for West Indian cricketers seeking a release to participate in Leagues outside the jurisdiction of the West Indies. “This will be an amount equivalent to 20 per cent of the player fee (as defined in the player contract) that is actually paid to the relevant player,” the WICB statement said. “All NOCs will be subject to West Indies international commitments and, in respect of centrally contracted players, official domestic cricket matches in the West Indies.”

The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) has voiced its opposition to a 20 per cent No Objection Certificate (NOC) levy imposed by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). Citing that it was not benefitting from its investment in players, who go on to play in the professional leagues globally and do not return to play in domestic competitions, the WICB said it was at a disadvantage under the current status quo.

In a swift reply WIPA said a levy on players’ earnings is not the answer and suggested that the action of the WICB could be challenged in a court of law. “The West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) takes note of the position taken by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) on the condition for issuance of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to West Indian players,” the WIPA statement said. “WIPA believes an imposition of a NOC levy by the WICB is not the answer to the lack of coherent global scheduling.

“WICB having invested in developing a player’s talent, is not able to realize a return on its investment if the player is not available to play in local tournaments, which would allow lesser experienced players the opportunity to face more experienced and skilled opposition, thereby improving on the standard and competitiveness of the domestic tournament,” the WICB said in a statement released Tuesday. “In addition, the player is unavailable to mentor and develop younger players and to otherwise contribute to the overall growth of the game and its development infrastructure. It has become a system that disadvantages nations like the West Indies which have traditionally developed players who are particularly skilled in the shortest format of the game.

A centrally regulated and coordinated international cricket programme for all three formats is necessary for the improvement of global cricket. As such, the International Cricket Council (ICC) will need to spearhead the complete restructure of the international cricket calendar.” WIPA said it was totally against any new market restrictions or regulations that may limit West Indian players and the present NOC levy of the WICB promotes the restraint of trade and is open to be challenged legally. “To ensure that this matter is addressed immediately, we are proposing that the WICB meets with all stakeholders regionally (WIPA) and internationally (ICC, FICA) forthwith,” WIPA said. Sakima Mullings Wins Main Bout Of Jamaica/Cayman Pro-am Fight Card found the going a bit tougher than he would have imagined. Bowen’s punches opened cuts over both of Lawrence’s eyes prompting the ringside doctor to examine the Trinidadian between rounds. The judges scored the fight 58-56, 59-55 and 59-54 in favour of Bowen. The result infuriated Lawrence and his manager Boxu Potts, who felt his boxer was robbed. The manager said he would be appealing the result and demanded a rematch in Trinidad and Tobago. Earlier on the night, Jamaica was the big winner, bagging five of the seven fights on the card. Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings stopped Courtney McLeave two minutes 47 seconds into the fourth round of the main bout on the Jamaica versus Cayman Pro/Am fight card at the Barbican Beach in Kingston on Saturday night. On a night when the second professional bout was marred by controversy, Mullings was dominant against an opponent that was not in his class. McLeave was knocked down in the third round in the fight that Mullings started slowly but got better through the rounds.

A confident Mullings said afterwards that he realised that McCleave was not a match so he tried to get in as many rounds as possible before his corner instructed him to finish the job. The controversy surrounded the fight between Jamaica's Jermain Bowen and Trinidad's Sheldon Lawrence. Lawrence came into the fight with a 6-0 win record while Bowen had only one won in five previous fights. At the weigh-in Lawrence promised to finish off Bowen by round two but he

Collel Hogg won by third-round TKO over compatriot Samuel Grant, however, Cayman’s Chambria Dalhouse knocked down Jamaica’s Kerrone Thomas en route to victory. Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Dariel Hylton defeated Cayman's Alexander Smith in their three-round bout. Jamaica’s Caribbean Games gold medalist Ricardo Carter defeated Eduardo Montalvo by unanimous decision. Cayman's Dariel Ebanks was the other non-Jamaican winner on the night, scoring a unanimous decision over Alando Lewis. (SportsMax)

“It’s good news for us,” said T&T head coach Stephen Hart. “Obviously it’s been a long time for this to come through going back to March and I would like to thank the FA for taking all the necessary steps and seeing it through to the end.”

The Trinidad & Tobago Football Association announced Monday that it has received official clearance from FIFA for John Bostock to represent the country in international competition.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who represented England at the youth level, is eligible to play for the Soca Warriors’ against visiting Costa Rica on Friday to open the final round of CONCACAF

Bostock has been enjoying an outstanding season with Lens, scoring five goals in 14 league games since signing a two-year contract with the French second-division side in July.
