Do your research. Chances are business owners can find a number of festival or marketplace opportunities in or around their communities each month. Some of these festivals may be large scale events like annual Christmas bazaars, while others might be more toned down affairs that occur each week. Business owners can research local festivals, paying particular attention to how communities market the events and which businesses attend them. Community turnout is another significant factor to consider. Such research can help business owners determine which festivals best suit their businesses and what they’re hoping to accomplish.

Apple Butter

Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp

Servings: 10

3/4 cup Apple Butter

1/2 cup maple syrup

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

10 pieces bacon

10 extra-large shrimp, cleaned and deveined chopped cilantro, for garnish (optional)

Heat oven to 400 F. Line rimmed bakingsheetwithparchmentpaper.

In medium-sized skillet over medium heat, add apple butter, maplesyrup,redpepperflakes,salt and paprika. Whisk until mixture is thick and cooked down by half, about10minutes.Setaside.

In large skillet over medium heat, add bacon slices and cook until brownedbutstillflexible. Remove from pan and drain on paper towel-lined plate.

Wraponebaconslicearoundeach shrimp, secure with toothpick and placeontopreparedbakingsheet. Once all shrimp have been wrapped, baste tops with apple butter mixture.

Bake 5 minutes then flip and baste other side of shrimp. Bake another 5 minutes. Continue to flip and basteshrimp(2minuteseachtime) until shrimp is fully cooked. Do not overcook as glaze can burn. Sprinklewithcilantro,ifdesired.

OSO WHITE BEAN CHILI

1 bag dried white beans

2 Oso Sweet Onions

1/2 cup Garlic (chopped)

1 pound ground chicken or turkey

1 cup celery (chopped)

1 tsp Oregano

1/4 cup Olive oil

2 each large green mild chili (deseeded)

2 quarts chicken stock or water (to cover)

2 tsp Cumin

Saute onions, garlic, celery, chilies, chicken/turkey for 10 minutes on medium heat. Add half of the chicken stock. Then add salt, pepper, oregano and cumin and simmer for 45 minutes. Then adjust with the remaining chicken stock. Combine all ingredients in crock pot or large heavy-bottomed pot, bring to a boil and then simmer overnight, or 8 hours. Puree 1 cup beans for a thicker chili and serve. Garnish with shredded cheese, fresh cilantro, tarragon or basil, chopped Tabasco peppers, raw chopped Oso Sweet onions or hot sauce.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the ASPCA, the number of dogs and cats euthanized in United States animal shelters has declined significantly since 2011. The ASPCA reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That number is high, but it marks an improvement over 2011, when roughly 2.6 million dogs and cats were euthanized. The ASPCA credits part of this decline in euthanizations to an increase in animal adoptions and greater success at returning stray animals to their owners. Recent data indicates that roughly 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year, with a 50/50 split between dogs and cats. A greater emphasis on adoption can help reduce euthanization statistics even further.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF DAIRY

Heart health benefits: Some people avoid dairy because of perceptions that it is bad for cardiac health. A report presented at the 2018 Congress of the European Society of Cardiology that looked at 20 studies involving around 25,000 people found no association between the consumption of most dairy products (including whole fat varieties) and cardiovascular disease. The only exception was milk, but the results showed one would have to drink almost a liter of milk a day for a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Still, the American Heart Association recommends adults choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products whenever possible. Also, a 2018 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found men who ate plenty of fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese had a smaller risk of coronary artery disease than men who ate less.

PEACH BRUSCHETTA WITH BLUE CHEESE

Serves 4

4 slices country bread

2 peaches

Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing

1/4poundbluecheese,gorgonzola or Blue Castello cheese

Preheat the broiler. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes.

While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact.

When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. Spread one-fourth of the cheese on each slice of warm bread, place a sliced peach half on top, and serve.

Did You Know? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiffness, swelling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. While psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slowly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis will not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies.Those who have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m afraid to take my 1-year-old Lab, Shiner, on hikes in the woods because he might be bitten by a tick and get ill. What’s your take on the tick situation? -- Brian in Concord, New Hampshire

DEAR BRIAN: Even though ticks carrying diseases like Lyme are a concern, do not let the risk put you o of bringing your dog along on hiking adventures. Yes, ticks are numerous, and you live in a hotspot for tick-borne diseases. But there are precautions that you can take to keep both Shiner and yourself healthy.

A Lyme vaccine is available for dogs, so talk to your vet about getting Shiner this shot. But ticks carry other diseases too. So be sure that Shiner wears a ea-and-tickrepellent collar or takes a ea-andtick (and heartworm) preventative medication.

Keep ticks o of your own skin by treating clothing and gear with permethrin and letting it dry completely before wearing the gear (permethrin should never be applied to your skin). Just before setting out on your hike, spray insect repellent that works on numerous bugs, including ticks and eas, onto your skin.

A er your hike, before getting into the car, check Shiner’s coat for ticks and other bugs. Run your hand along his fur from head to tail to dislodge any critters or debris from the top of his coat. Check under his tail and between the pads of his paws. Shake your gear out and do a tick check on yourself as much as possible.

At home, do a more thorough check of Shiner by running your hands into his coat and visually checking his fur and skin. Remove any embedded ticks using a tick removal tool.

I moved to Batavia just about a year and a half ago, but it did not take me long to fall in love with this place. As I lived most of my life in the Northtowns, this area has been such a breath of fresh air. I have the pleasure of working in customer service, and the vast majority of people I interact with are kind and decent people. The small businesses around here are supported and mostly thriving, the neighborhoods are mostly clean, the parks are many, charming, and also well-kept. All of the people I have personally met in this school district and even municipal system are at worst decent, if not warm and helpful.

Gratitude for all of my wonderful neighbors and those who contribute to the abundance of joy there is to be found here in Batavia. I’m glad to have made it my home.

Small Vent

Although the intent is great, some people don’t understand Memorial Day. It’s to acknowledge and remember those who DIED for our country. Veterans have their own day of recognition. One thing most don’t realize is that Active Duty military are not Veterans. After they’re off active duty, unless dishonorably discharged, they’re Veterans.

No loud muffler law in [local town]

I live in [local town] and have 2 neighbors with loud mufflers. I have called the police 3 times but we have no law about loud mufflers. They come and go at all hours and run their car right under my bedroom window. I have asked them to fix their car but no luck. I’m tired of getting woken up and so is my better half. Had to vent… mufflered out.

Really?

What’s wrong with this: a pickup truck passing cars driving 65 in a 55 zone. The tailgate is down. The bed loaded with multiple rakes, gardening equipment, tree branches and a gas can. Nothing tied down. I would put money down that if anything bad happened after hitting a pot hole or bump, the driver would continue on like nothing happened. Where has intelligence gone?

People who get COVID-19 vaccine less likely to die from any cause

DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you referred to a U.K. source that stated “all-cause mortality is very significantly reduced in people who have had the COVID-19 vaccine, compared to unvaccinated people.” I wasn’t sure what you meant by all-cause? Does this mean any and all deaths, with or without COVID-19, for any reason, have been very significantly reduced just by getting the COVID-19 shot? Or does it mean that any and all deaths associated with COVID-19 have been reduced in those who have been vaccinated? If it is the first, then fewer people should be dying, people should be living longer, and we should not see a decrease in life expectancy (except for the addition of those dying from COVID-19, which brings the age down). Anyway, if the first is true, then I will definitely continue getting the COVID-19 shot just to live longer, with or without getting COVID-19! -- C.P. ANSWER: The U.K. study looked at all-cause mortality, which means anyone who dies from any reason. The study found that getting the COVID-19 vaccine reduced the likelihood of dying from COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 causes.

One potential problem studies face is assigning cause of death. If a person with a very serious cancer who is expected to pass away within a few months gets COVID-19 and dies, did the cancer kill them, or did COVID-19? If you have to choose just one cause, the answer could be misleading. That’s why the results of the U.K. study (and a Florida study that showed similar results) were so important. People who get the COVID-19 vaccine are less likely to die from any cause.

In the last few years in the U.S., the longstanding trend of improved mortality has reversed, and death rates are going up, partially due to COVID-19.

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames.

According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary.

• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.

• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit.

• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.

• Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.

• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

Gardening pointers for novices

People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens,andsuchgardenerscan benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions.

Begin with one or two types of vegetables.Tomatoes,cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starterplants,astheyarerelatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden.

Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system.

Consult with your local gardening centerformoresuggestions,such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

I like to use my compost for gardening but I have no idea how much to mix with my soil. NoideaonapHlevel!Help!!

Compost is an excellent garden soil amendment to use every gardening season and should be added starting early before planting. It also can be added as a mulch as your plants begin to grow and produce. Compost improves the tilth (workability) of the soil and acts like a slow-release fertilizer for your plants.

Most good garden soil has around

4% compost. I like to use about 10% in my gardening, which works out to adding about 1 inch of compost worked into the top 9 inches of soil. Mature, finished compost acts like a buffer to soil pH.Unfinished compost produces amino (organic) acids as the low-temperature bacteria break down the compost. Mature compost becomes more neutral (between 6-8 pH) as mesophile bacteria take over. Most garden plants require a soil pH of between 6 and 7. You can get soil

test kits, testing meters, and paper test strips and test your soil yourself, or you can contact your local county Cooperative Extension office for more information.

Any recommendations on getting rid of spinach worms?

The “spinach worms” you have are likely a variety of caterpillar. They can be treated effectively with an organic substance called Bacillus Thuringiensis, often called BT. This is a common product in garden centers. Follow all instructions on the label closely.

The Many Benefits of a Community Garden: Magnolia Street Children’s Garden

When Google Earth came online, Iletha Cli on realized with revulsion that the plastic owers her mother had set out around their house on Magnolia Street in Rochester could be seen from space. So, she purchased $500 worth of real ower plants for her mother. When half of them died, Iletha decided to learn how to grow plants in containers.

Flowers led to a tomato plant, and the rich avor of the rst ripe tomato, unlike any tomato she had ever bought at a store, hooked her on growing vegetables. Soon, every sunny spot along the south side of the house was lled with pots. A support worker for special needs children for the Greece School District, Iletha has dedicated her career to some of the most disadvantaged youngsters in Rochester. When the girl next door expressed amazement and delight when she pulled a carrot from the soil, like “a rabbit coming out of a hat,” Iletha knew she had to create a garden for her and her twin siblings. And that was the start of the Magnolia Street Children’s Garden. Within a year, she had a city permit to garden in the empty lot across the street.

A few blocks away, Drs. Bill Bayer and Mark Brown ran Je erson Family Health, a clinic for the low-income neighborhood. Dr. Bill said, “I became interested in community gardening when I realized that my patients’ health was determined much more by lifestyle choices than whatever ministrations I would try to render.” e two doctors began installing and planting small backyard gardens for their patients. e two feet by two feet garden boxes were big enough for a couple of collard plants, a tomato, a cucumber or okra, and some basil. Late each spring, the doctors drove around to restore and plant the gardens, between 30 and 40 of them, depending on their stamina. Many patients lived in apartments without yards suitable for gardens, so Dr. Bill connected with Iletha. rough her contacts and by recruiting his patients, they expanded the community garden to its current membership of 15 households. Iletha says of Dr. Bill, “Many of the people involved in the garden are his former patients. He is not an expert gardener, but he knows a lot about people in this neighborhood and their health needs.” Since Dr. Bill retired, he learns more about gardening and spends more time at the garden.

On what was once a 40 by 100-foot house lot, they built 20 4’x8’ beds and lled them with soil, invested in a water spigot, a small tool shed, some tools, and a garden sign. ey soon learned that without a peripheral fence, they were growing groundhog feed, so they enclosed the bed area with a wire fence that extends two feet underground.

Each family has a bed to plant as they prefer. Most put in a few tomato plants, collards and other greens, sweet or hot peppers, and a cabbage or lettuce or two. An Indian family added okra, eggplant, beans, and melons from their own seeds. Iletha grows a variety of root crops and green beans that do not t well in her containers. Mr. Junious concentrates on collard greens.

When I joined the garden as a sort of organic advisor, I planted an herb garden, a bed each of garlic and potatoes, and a few rows of leeks for everyone to share. I teach the children how to orient potato slips, garlic, and da odil bulbs, identify strange weeds and pests, and lead the campaign to exterminate poison ivy. Fall clean-up changed from clearing the beds to planting oats as a cover crop or mulching to protect the health of the soil, and collard greens were le to overwinter for early greens in the spring.

Dr. Bill and lletha organize Saturday morning work sessions throughout the season. Linda brings fresh fruit, corn cakes, and other healthy snacks and drinks. Members set out plants, weed, and harvest together.

Children play in the garden and parents send children to pick lastminute ingredients. Iletha says, “ e kids walk back and forth to the corner store and go in the garden and eat in there. ey graze in the garden and everybody can see their kids there. e kids put water in the birdbath. Some families regard the weekly sessions as their outing –their time with their kids in the garden. It has taken on a life of its own.”

For the Urban Gardens Day in September 2022, members brought food to share for a delicious meal, enough for everyone including a mail carrier and a passerby. e garden is part of the citywide network of community gardens supported by the Recreation Department, a member of the Urban Agriculture Working Group, and this year may join the Taproot Collective, which provides gardening classes, seed and other resources, and group liability insurance.

BAKED ONION, GOAT CHEESE AND SUN-DRIED TOMATO DIP

Prep time: 20 minutes

Cook time: 20 minutes

Servings: 6

1 jar (16 ounces) Aunt Nellie’s Holland-Style Onions nonstick cooking spray

2 tablespoons chopped oil-packed, sun-dried tomatoes, divided

1 large clove garlic, minced

4 tablespoons sliced fresh basil, divided coarse ground black pepper, to taste

1 tablespoon oil from sun-dried tomatoes or olive oil, divided 1 log (8 ounces) goat cheese

1/2 teaspoon Mediterranean herb seasoning (optional) crackers (optional)

flatbread (optional) pita chips (optional)

Heat oven to 350 F. Drain onions well; pat dry. Spray shallow, oven-proof dish (34-cup size) with nonstick cooking spray. Place onions in dish. Press with spatula to flatten and crush.

Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon tomatoes, garlic, 2 tablespoons basil and black pepper, to taste. Drizzle with 1/2 tablespoon oil. Cut goat cheese into 6-8 rounds. Arrange over onion mixture. Sprinkle with remaining tomatoes; drizzle with remaining oil. Sprinkle with herb seasoning, if desired. Bake uncovered 20-30 minutes, or until cheese is soft and mixture is bubbly. Sprinkle with remaining basil. Serve warm with crackers, flatbread or pita chips, if desired.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day.

1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations.

2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients.

3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting howquicklyandefficientlysuch projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction.

4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to workonprojectsandcheckand answer work-related emails, clearinguptimelaterintheday. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
