* Among the many reuses for plastic newspaper bags: Put soiled diapers in before putting in a trash can. Use to pick up after your pet on a walk. Fill with grocery store plastic bags for storage. Keep a few to store wet swimsuits in after a trip to the beach or pool.

* Before removing a splinter, ice the area. Less fussing and a wooden splinter might absorb some liquid, causing it to swell enough to pop out a bit more.

* Recycling paper is good, but reusing before recycling is even better. Ask your child’s classroom teacher if he or she has a “both sides” policy for lined papers. Also, copy paper that’s printed on only one side can be quartered for quick scratch paper.

* Trying to spot roof damage but not quite sure you’re up for climbing a ladder? Before you get up on the roof, get out your binoculars. You’d be surprised how much you can see from the ground, and you can do a cursory examination and then decide if anything needs a closer look.

* Cut kitchen sponges into smaller pieces. They clean as well as a larger sponge, and you can dispose of the smaller pieces when they get yucky. -- O.C. in Michigan

COLD WEATHER WILDLIFE IN HOMES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAMAGE RISKS

Many people may practice the “love thy neighbor” creed, but when it comes to four-legged wildlife such as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes when outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thinned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has found that many areas of the country continue to report increased encounters with nuisance wildlife.

“While it can be a unique experience to spot wildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be discouraged from taking up residence,” advises Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed to rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected with rabies. Because of the risks associated with these pests, homeowners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

In the weeks leading up to Easter, practicing Christians commonly commit to a period of fasting and abstinence known as Lent. This commitment commemorates Christ’s 40-day journey into the desert, and the sacrifices modern day Christians make are meant to replicate those made by Christ during that period. Many Christians abstain from alcohol during Lent, but those who do may not realize that beer played a significant role in helping a small community of 17th century monks survive the Lenten fasting season. Monks from the Order of St. Francis of Paola, often referred to as “Paulaner monks,” fasted from all solid foods throughout the season of Lent during the 1600s. According to the Paulaner Brewery, the monks, originally from southern Italy, relocated to Bavaria, once an independent country but now a southern state in Germany, in the 1600s. Their strict religious orders forbade the monks from consuming solid food during Lent, but they still needed nutrients to sustain them. So the monks concocted a strong brew loaded with carbohydrates and nutrients. The monks must have liked the beer, as they continued to brew it and even began selling it in their community. An early doppelbock, the beer was one of the first offerings from the Paulaner Brewery, which opened its doors in 1634 and remains open today.

Kindness!

While leaving my SUV to enter Tops in Avon on March 3rd, a young man was coming out with a large bouquet of flowers. I said, “Oh, flowers for me? You shouldn’t have.” We both laughed and went on our ways. When I came out, my daughter (who had waited in the car) had a bouquet of flowers on her lap. She said the man came over, said he was a Christian, and God wanted him to give the flowers to me and he would go back in and get more for his wife. My daughter said thank you and my mom will cry, which I did. What he did not know was that our family had a very difficult week. I will think of his kindness each time I look at these flowers and when the time is right will do the same for someone else. They say bad people are taking over our world, but I continue to believe that the good ones are all over; we just don’t hear as much about them. Many thanks to this kind man.

TECHNICALLY HANDICAPPED

My rant is to open the eyes of the masses to the technically handicapped. I am one of them. At 68 years of age I fall in the gap of no major training of computers, smart phones, etc. I am also on a fixed income and can’t afford all the gadgets nor the price of the Internet. When I need help for things that have to be done online. I have to hire someone to do so. Every shop, restaurant, government, and medical office has some form, deal or discount that is only online. Having no cell phone, computer to access these deals, or forms, etc. Life for myself with technology is extremely frustrating! I only ask that businesses and the government, etc. stop discriminating against my handicap as they do for the physically handicapped, waiting just a while longer until demanding things be only assessed online until every generation is technically taught at a young age. Yes, I have taken classes available at libraries. I also do not want a government issued phone. Do others agree?

Funeral Planning: Don’t Be Rushed

One life event we don’t want to think about having to do for a loved one is planning a funeral. But sometimes we must, and it can be stressful and loaded with the potential to be scammed in some way.

A small amount of help is coming. e Federal Trade Commission wants online funeral pricing. And it makes sense. When you need to organize a funeral, emotions are running high. You won’t be at your best when it comes to thinking about pricing and services.

Back in 1984, the FTC created the Funeral Rule, but it only requires funeral homes to show lists of the prices of caskets and any outer burial containers, such as a grave liner. And it was only required that a potential customer be given those prices in person, certainly not by phone. To make it worse, funeral homes only had to show pictures or the item itself a er the prices were disclosed.

By then, of course, you were at the funeral home, unhappy and sad and stressed. e last thing you wanted to do is treat it like a car purchase and shop around. So you signed the paperwork on the spot, possibly paid too much and maybe didn’t get the items and services you wanted.

ere are a few ways to ensure that your vulnerability at that time isn’t exploited.

Before you leave the house to organize a funeral, go online to check local funeral home websites. ey might be among the very few to actually post pricing and services.

Take someone with you.

Get the price list (in writing) of what the funeral home o ers.

Before you sign any paperwork, contact the Funeral Consumers Alliance (funerals.org) and get their advice. ere’s a group in every state. On their website, click on “Consumers” and scroll down to “Don’t Know Where To Begin? Start Here.”

Remember: Take your time.

Pet Sitting Can Be More an a Side Job

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was recently laid o from my job as a programmer, and have been thinking about taking a new career direction. I’m tired of being stuck in an o ce all day. And I love being around pets. But is it really possible to make a good living working as a dog walker or a pet sitter? -- Barry J., Cambridge, Massachusetts

DEAR BARRY: I know more than a few people who are full-time pet sitters and dog walkers. Most have their own business, while a few are employees of pet care companies. As you can imagine, the pay rates vary widely from person to person. ZipRecruiter reports that the average hourly wage, nationally, for pet sitters is about $19.23.

I think it’s great that you’re considering a career change. But I recommend testing out the world of pet sitting rst. Consider working part time for a pet-sitting company. Even better, if you know someone who does dog walking, ask to accompany them for one day to see what their job entails. Find out what the pitfalls of this business may be, and what makes it fun to do. Finally, o er to pet sit for a friend who’s going out of town for a day or two to get direct experience and really see if it’s something that you’d like to do full time.

Next, visit the Small Business Administration’s website (www. sba.gov) and check out its Learning Center section, which has several micro-courses that teach how to start up and run a small business. Being able to combine core business skills with a love for and dedication to pets is a great platform to start on. Best of luck.

“Hidden Figures” Revealed at Black History Month Celebration at Byron-Bergen

On Friday, February 17th, students in sixth grade as well as several clubs and student organizations celebrated the accomplishments of historic and contemporary Black individuals throughout the day of learning. Highlights included a demonstration from special guests, pianist and composer Timothy Digba Ogunbiyi and dancer/choreographer Solange Rodrigues, followed by a group presentation by Byron-Bergen High School students Dayanara Caballero, Deborah Catalino, Malachi Smith, Roman Smith, Solomon Smith, Joshua Tardy, and Ava Wagoner.

Ogunbiyi and Rodrigues collaborated on an improvised performance that conveyed the emotions of sadness, confusion,

excellent presentation for our students,” said Byron-Bergen Jr/Sr High School Principal Ashley John Grillo. “It was an absolute treat to have such highly trained professionals share their music and dance experiences with our students.”

Ogunbiyi is originally from Lagos, Nigeria, where he planned to become an engineer until deciding to dedicate himself to music. He has studied classical and jazz piano and is currently a doctoral candidate in piano performance at the Eastman School of Music. He kicked o the assembly in a combined performance with the Byron-Bergen Jazz Ensemble and discussed improvisation during his break-out session.

Rodrigues is from Greece, New York. She began dancing at the age of three and completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance with a concentration in choreography from SUNY Purchase in 2020. She currently teaches dance and tness classes in the Rochester area, is a member of several performing dance troupes, and is moving to Brooklyn to join the Pocket Fuel Groovers, a dance company founded by her brother.

“I want to thank Mrs. Alyson Tardy for coordinating this

high school students’ presentation in her classroom. e students discussed segregation, representation, and introduced the movie Hidden Figures. ey talked about historic and contemporary Black individuals who many of the younger students had not heard of or could not recognize, important gures in history and culture who are, in a way, hidden.

e students knew some featured individuals, such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks, right away. e younger students could not identify other individuals such as Mae Carol Jemison, the rst Black woman to travel in space, civil rights activist Claudette Colvin, and Emmy, Golden Globe, and Tony Awardwinning actor James Earl Jones. Students even struggled to identify basketball legend Michael Jordan. While learning about these and other important Black individuals, students had the opportunity to consider who each is and why they may be less well known than other individuals.

A er a discussion of these hidden gures, the day ended with a screening of the 2016 award-winning feature lm, Hidden Figures, the real-life story of a team of female Black mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program. Despite the women’s important contributions, they remained widely unknown for decades.

As the day ended, students experienced jazz, musical improvisation, dance improvisation, learned about important Black individuals and historic events, and considered the importance of representation in history and contemporary culture.

“It was a great day at B-B celebrating Black History Month,” said Grillo.

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the rst few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the brous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

Variety is the spice of life when it comes to protein sources. Eat different foods to ensure the body gets all of the nutrients it requires.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT DENTAL CLEANINGS WHILE WEARING BRACES

Clean at home. Special “pipe cleaner” brushes can get in between the wires and brackets,pushing out any food particles that are missed by larger toothbrushes.Floss can be snaked under wires to get in between teeth as well; it just requires some finesse.Waxed floss generally is easier to use as it less likely to get stuck.

Recreational Tianeptine Has Potential for Abuse

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been hearing about tianeptine being sold at gas stations. Is it really dangerous? -- S.F.

ANSWER: Like so many substances, tianeptine can be a useful drug when prescribed and taken correctly (it’s used in several countries for depression), but it is indeed dangerous when used recreationally. Its use has been banned in several (unfortunately not all) states across the U.S. It is sold (yes, especially at gas stations) as a dietary supplement. Because it acts on the same receptor as morphine, when used at high doses far beyond the medically approved dose, it has potential for abuse and even overdose, with a handful of deaths ascribed to its use.

I recommend in the strongest possible terms against its recreational use and hope it is completely banned soon.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe pain in my right shoulder. I have seen two orthopedists and received X-rays, MRI scans and a cortisone injection, which didn’t work. Both surgeons recommended a shoulder replacement. I am taking three adult aspirins each morning (I am allergic to NSAIDs), which makes the pain go away. Is this safe? I am 83 and otherwise healthy. -- J.B.

ANSWER: Aspirin is a type of non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug and has the toxicities common to all the drugs in that group, including an increased risk for bleeding and potential damage to the stomach and kidneys. But it has additional toxicities beyond NSAIDs like ibuprofen, especially at higher levels. I am very cautious about prescribing aspirin and generally prefer other anti-inflammatory medicines. However, people have long taken aspirin -- sometimes at much higher doses -- usually without problems. The fact that you are taking it only once a day reduces the toxicity, but I have to say I am surprised the benefit is lasting all day. The risk of toxicity is higher at older ages. At 83, you are at a significantly higher risk (seven times the risk) than younger people. Most of the data on exactly what your risk is comes from people taking low-dose aspirin (81 mg, not the 975 mg you are taking), so I can’t give you an evidence-based answer. But, for men in their 80s taking low-dose aspirin, about 1.5% will have a serious bleeding event per year. Your risk will be significantly higher due to the much-larger dose you are taking. However, one has to consider both the benefits of the aspirin treatment (the pain being gone is the best possible outcome) and the toxicity of other possible treatments, such as surgery (which is very significant).

There are many classes of NSAIDs, with very different chemical properties, and it is likely there is another type of NSAID you could safely take, with a lower risk than the dose of aspirin you are currently on. On the other hand, you can’t get any better effectiveness, at least in terms of pain, and the absolute risk is still fairly small, so I’m not sure I recommend you change. I am always very cautious about recommending surgery to someone in their 80s when there is an effective medication available to treat the issue.

INDIRECT DENTAL FILLINGS

Indirect fillings are used to repair teeth that don’t have enough structure to support a traditional filling but aren’t damaged enough to require a crown. “Katy” Logan was born on November 7, 1926, in Shippenville, PA, the daughter of the late Milton and Mabel Greenawalt. Katy graduated from Shippenville High School and served with her husband Jack Logan in the pastoral ministry of the Free Methodist Church for 50 years. In addition, she worked as the manager of the bookstore at Roberts Wesleyan College for several years. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Logan, whom she was married to for 73 years.

Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school.

Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift.

Agreatnumberofcollegegraduatesentertheworkforcewithdegreesthat may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Many establishments display the familiar Irish tricolour flag on St. Patrick’s Day, and paradegoers may even wave miniature versions of this significant symbol in support of those marching. This instantly recognizable flag has a rich history. Equal parts green, white and orange, the flag was designed to foster peace in the country that had experienced considerable turmoil due to the divide between the country’s Protestant and Catholic residents. The green in the flag represents the Irish Catholics, while the orange represents the Irish Protestants. The white is a symbol of hope for peace between the two factions. Though Ireland established the tricolour as its national flag in 1921, it first appeared much earlier when Irish national Thomas Francis Meagher unfurled it in 1848.

WHY DOES THE WORLD CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY?

March 17 is a special day for people of Irish heritage and other celebrants across the globe. Each year, millions of people pay homage to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, with parades, parties and religious services. Celebrations occur even though many celebrants may know little about this legendary saint.

Although St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a festivity filled with clovers, frosty mugs of beer, green clothing, and lively music, the day was once a religious feast day honoring the man many credit with bringing Christianity to Ireland.

St. Patrick was born in Britain circa AD 387. Many are surprised to learn he was not Irish. In fact, St. Patrick first spent time in Ireland when he was captured by Irish pagans as a teen and taken to their country as a slave. After six years working as a shepherd, Patrick became familiar with the customs and spirit of the Irish and “found God.” He was able to eventually escape his imprisonment, vowing to one day return to Ireland as a free man. Patrick was schooled at monasteries and was ordained a priest and later became a bishop. Under Pope Celestine I, he was commissioned to become an apostle to Ireland and spread the news of God and Christianity. St.PatrickspentmanyyearsevangelizinginthenorthernhalfofIrelandand converted thousands of people from paganism to Christianity. According to legend, St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish. Patrick’s efforts to drive out the pagans became an allegory in which he drove “snakes” out of Ireland.

Although green has become the primary color of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and green remains widely associated with Ireland, during the 18th century, the Order of St. Patrick, an Anglo-Irish chivalric order, adopted blue as it’s official color. That led to blue being associated with St. Patrick. However, “wearing of the green” eventually fell back into favor, and the color green and an association with St. Patrick’s Day grew during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Although St. Patrick’s Day originated as a religious celebration in honor of a man who brought Christianity to Ireland, it has since become a larger representation of Irish pride and culture.
