Indē Home Remodeling

INTUITIVE DESIGN THAT INSPIRES

In 2010, two local building companies – Morrell Builders and Pride Mark Homes – decided to reinvent the new-build and home remodel experience for customers. Jeff and Scott Morrell, along with James and James Barbato, Sr., combined their years of expertise to create an opportunity for people in the Rochester and Finger Lakes areas to build the homes of their dreams.

The Indē (intuitive + design) Studio came to life. Located at 1501 Pittsford Victor Road, Suite 300, Indē is so much more than a studio; it is a home new-build and remodeling business that prioritizes two values above all: customer service and craftsmanship. Instead of homeowners having to go to multiple businesses for their designing/ building needs, Indē created an all-in-one avenue to achieve the perfect home. Now in their fourteenth year of business, the Indē Studio and its team are just beginning to make their mark.

on the cover

PRIORITIZING THE CUSTOMER

Indē originally started as a company focused on kitchens and bathrooms, but in the past decade, the business has expanded its reach. Today, the Indē team can build or remodel entire first floors – from kitchens and bathrooms, to flooring, built-ins, laundry rooms, pantries, closet systems, and full basements. Indē is the complete package for homeowners in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region.

For customers, getting started is often the hardest part. Studio Manager, Andrea Greco recommends starting with a visit to the space. “We are an open showroom and studio – you don’t need an appointment. We are open six days a week and love walk-ins,” she shares. Andrea also suggests taking advantage of the free 30-minute consultations at the studio for customers to truly get a feel for Indē’s process and to begin sharing their hopes for their project. These can be scheduled directly through the website at www.theindestudio.com.

passion, and compassion in each project means customers often return for future remodeling or design needs. The team acknowledges how designing a new kitchen or other living space can be an emotional and personal experience; building trust in the working relationship is of utmost importance to ensure the greatest, most rewarding outcomes.

SUSTAINABLE CHOICES

The common phrase “my dream home” exists for a reason. Whether customers build that dream from scratch or remodel a few rooms in the home they love, Indē is ready to help realize their vision. With forty employees, ranging from designers to consultants to installers, this company is in the business of creating interesting and unique homes at an accessible price point.

TRENDING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

For a remodel, every customer works with a team consisting of a kitchen and bathroom designer, a design consultant, a project manager, and a job foreman. The team may be larger based on the project, but this core group of four communicates throughout the process, start to finish.

As a company, Indē focuses first and foremost on prioritizing the customer. “It’s so important to remember that each customer is an individual with wants, needs, and loves. They are looking to create spaces that will be filled with memories with their family,” says Andrea. “Building a home is a big financial decision, and we want customers to feel confident. We love their project just as much as they do – it means just as much to us.”

Indē’s customer-centered values have made them a top home design and remodel company in the region. Their genuine care,

With such a strong focus on the customer, Indē designers are sure to stay up-to-date on current trends in the home design business. That is why they update at least one setting in their 3,500 sq ft showroom each year. Within the past year, the team has updated three settings, changing the whole front of the showroom. The spaces feature the most current trends: modern rift-cut oak for cabinetry, frameless cabinets, and inset cabinets that can be modern, transitional, or traditional, lighted cabinets, and beautiful built-in cutting boards.

Customers select from three lines of cabinetry: Wellborn Cabinet, Kountry Kraft, and Showplace. Countertop fabrication comes from Roma Tile & Marble – a company located in Syracuse – which offers stunning granite, quartz, and tile options. Indē’s many flooring options come from Hallmark Floors.

“Don’t be afraid to use a little color or to mix
metal finishes, as long as it’s done right. The same goes for light fixtures –try for a healthy mix of wood and brass tones.”
- ANDREA GRECO

On the cover is a model townhome in Alpine Ridge, a community built by Morrell Builders in Pittsford. It features bold, on-trend colors and beautiful tile designs. The kitchen –where families often spend a lot of time together – is both chic and homey. The island is an eye-catching deep green (the color is called “Celtic”), which is juxtaposed against bright quartz countertops. The quartz continues effortlessly to cover the entire backsplash – an attractive aesthetic that is also very user-friendly and easy to maintain – and the stained wood on the stove hood lends a rustic twist to a modern feel.

Incorporating a blend of different colors, textures, and finishes throughout various rooms in the home enhances its overall aesthetic appeal. Andrea suggests a healthy mix of these elements in a new build or remodel project.

Andrea also recommends always thinking about how a space will be used. Is the goal to entertain guests? Or perhaps to spend holidays with family by the fireplace? Andrea suggests picturing the memories a room will hold and including those in the design process.

The key is to design with purpose. For example, traditionally, the wall trim is painted a lighter white compared to the walls themselves. In the Alpine Ridge model townhome, Indē flips the script and features a white wall with a taupe gray trim. The possibilities are endless, and with the Indē team with you every step of the way, dreams truly become reality.

Indē is eager to create dream homes for the Rochester and Finger Lakes community. To get started, visit their website or stop by the studio Monday-Saturday!

SWEET SUMMERTIME IN ROC

Summertime

in the Rochester area means community concerts, festivals, and celebrations of all sorts, people getting out, connecting or reconnecting, and enjoying the glory that is life in our (albeit relatively short) summer season.

I am a nature girl through and through, and I love spending the day deep in the woods, pondering life’s big questions with a best friend (or solo! It’s great for meditation too!). Mendon Ponds Park is hands-down my favorite to hike in, though I won’t turn down any invitations to other parks and am making my way through the list of area trails and parks to explore.

Other favorites of mine include Turning Point Park and its cool boardwalk over the river ending at the lake and the Port of Rochester, which is a beautiful place to reflect over Lake Ontario before making the return trip. Corbett’s Glen is amazing, walking through a tunnel to enter a new realm, Taughannock Falls I recently discovered with a friend, and, of course, there's the iconic Watkins Glen, Letchworth State Park, and Stonybrook, all within an hour’s drive. Anywhere I can get away from human stress, that’s where I decompress. We truly are blessed to have such incredible trail systems and nature preserves across the area.

I love cooling off in the water, and we’re blessed to have so many Great and Finger Lakes within our backyard. I was born and raised in The Chosen Spot, so Canandaigua Lake holds a nostalgic place in my heart and I treasure time in and around that water. Now Conesus is a solid favorite, and I’m embarrassed to say I only recently discovered Seneca’s peaceful beauty. We’re truly blessed.

Perhaps this summer, I’ll paddle my way on the Erie Canal, though kayaking on the serenity of the Finger Lakes and ponds is my favorite, with beautiful scenery, gentle waves, wind cooling me on a hot day, and splashes of lazy paddling the only disruption to the serenity.

With school out for summer, my daughters and I have a running list of adventures to explore, and this year, live music tops our list. I love discovering new bands at community park concerts and through the gig lists I follow for various venues around town. I recently discovered open mic nights for musicians, comedians, and even poets/writers. We have such talent around Rochester.

With airshows, art shows, cultural festivals and music festivals every weekend, there’s always something to do out and about around Rochester. And let’s not forget the New York State Fair at the end of August, with its exhibitions, animals, music, iconic butter sculpture, and, of course, my daughters’ favorite tradition of the fresh milk holding steady at a quarter for a cup of a delicious treat.

Whatever you fancy, you’ll find something to do or explore. Let’s come together or get away and celebrate the natural and human wonders within miles around our backyards.

Wine. Fashion. Travel. Music. Entrepreneurship. Rochester’s Rubi Rodriguez, who goes by @thepadawanwino on social media, truly does it all. As a wine vlogger, she’s the first to know about a new drink spot in town, can tell you the best drink to get at any restaurant, and knows exactly what food to pair it with.

Curiosity about what the Finger Lakes region had to offer sparked a passion for trying wines around the area and documenting her reviews online. Rubi’s travels brought opportunities to talk with local winemakers, and she was “consistently impressed” by the quality of their wine and the immense care they put into their craft.

She says, “You hear people talk about Napa Valley and European wine producers, but what our community may not realize is that people are coming from all over the world to visit OUR wine region.”

And so, Rubi decided that more people needed to know about the incredible food and wine produced right here in our own backyard. Enter @thepadawanwino, where she vlogs her travels and shares food/wine recommendations on Instagram and TikTok.

Recommendations are just the tip of her wine content, though. If you’re ever wondering what to eat with your drink, Rubi has you covered with creative food and wine pairings guaranteed to elevate your meal, many of which take inspiration from her favorite movies and TV shows.

One delicious example is her pairing inspired by the popular Netflix show, Stranger Things. In this one, she combines Chianti wine with pizza, recreating a meal eaten by the show’s characters.

Being a wine connoisseur myself, I of course had to get the scoop on Rubi’s top recommendations in the area. A new favorite of hers is Unwine’d, located in the heart of downtown Rochester. This place offers a unique drinking experience with a self-serve wine bar that lets guests sample flavors before buying a full bottle. Her other local go-tos for wine include Capri Wine Bar for a Mediterranean style bar/restaurant combo, and Flight West for whiskey lovers.

WINING & DINING

in style

Take even a quick scroll through her @thepadawanwino socials and you’ll notice Rubi’s bold, vintage style on full display, often infusing her love of ’80s pop culture. Rich hues like emerald, deep maroon, and classic black dominate her wardrobe, accompanied by chunky statement jewelry.

When it comes to finding your own unique fashion sense, her biggest advice is to:

“Find your style icons. Watch old movies from decades that inspire you. Look at what some of your favorite recording artists from those decades were wearing at the time.”

Pinterest is your best friend in this process. Search the platform for favorite outfits of your favorite icons and save images to a board along with other looks that speak to you. Take bits and pieces of inspiration from the images you choose and incorporate them into your everyday ensembles.

DESTINATION INSPIRATION

Wine vlogging has taken Rubi throughout Rochester and beyond. Along the way, she’s curated a list of favorite nearby destinations perfect for a day or weekend-long escape. Hammondsport and Penn Yan, situated on the shores of Keuka Lake, top her list.

Nestled in the heart of the Finger Lakes wine region, these quaint towns are home to a myriad of beautiful wineries. Rubi’s favorites include Weis Vineyards, Domaine Leseurre, Dr. Konstantin Frank, and Living Roots, which she calls “the best winery in both Rochester and Keuka Lake.”

Seneca Lake’s charming city of Geneva is another standout for Rubi. She’s “obsessed” with Vinifera Wine Bar on Linden Street, a shop and tasting room entirely dedicated to serving Finger Lakes wines. The underground speakeasy makes a memorable experience she enthusiastically recommends.

FROM BOLD FASHION TO BOLD BRANDING

Rubi uses her content creation skills not just as an influencer, but to help empower local businesses with bold and unapologetic branding. In 2016, she and co-founder Stephanie Armstrong launched marketing agency, Moxie Creative Studios, to do just that. While the duo loves working with conscious brands of all backgrounds, they’re especially passionate about helping women-led businesses establish their unique “signature.”

Rubi says, “We truly believe we're stepping into a timeline where women get to take their power back and make a strong impact on their communities and their world.” Always open to collaboration, she loves highlighting local businesses and brands.

unwind & relax

After my morning rides at Spoke, my favorite way to unwind is to cozy up in a chair, sip on some coffee, and take a moment to check in with myself. I like to journal and reflect on my goals for the day.

“Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.”

One song on repeat

"Mi Gente" by J Balvin is a song packed with memories of starting and growing Spoke. Every time it plays, I get so pumped, and my intensity level skyrockets during a workout.

Rochester truly comes alive in the summer! On Saturdays, you’ll most likely find me at the Farmers Market in the morning, followed by swimming and boating with my husband and our kids in Sodus Point.

Ashley Robinson, the vibrant owner of Spoke Cycle and Fitness in the Village of Fairport, embodies a spirit of vitality and community engagement that resonates deeply with her local clientele. A mother of three young children and a fervent advocate for balanced living, Ashley thrives on blending her passion for fitness with her dedication to fostering a supportive environment. Ashley answers a few questions about her love for fitness and her community!

How did you get into cycling and what inspired you to open up Spoke in Rochester? I've always been active and enjoyed fitness. I tried various programs, but cycling was the one that truly captured my attention and stuck with me. I loved the energy, the supportive atmosphere, and the music driving the class. I always left feeling better physically and emotionally than when I walked in.

I've always believed that fitness should be fun and inspiring! When you enjoy how you're moving, healthy eating habits or even weight loss will naturally follow. Fitness won't feel like a chore, making it easier to stay committed without burning out.

Which outdoor space in Rochester holds a special place in your heart and why? The Canal holds a special place in my heart. It's where I trained for my first (and only) marathon. I love running there in the early morning as the world begins to wake up. Another hidden gem is Durand Beach. My husband and I enjoy bringing chairs, letting the kids play, and enjoying a happy hour refresher to wind down the day.

What piece of advice would you give to someone who is new to beat-based riding? Beat-based cycling is truly challenging! It requires coordination, which tests not only your physicality but also your mental acuity. It's a workout that engages both your body and brain power. Embrace the challenge, flow with it, and with time, you'll find yourself riding the journey!

What's one program you've been involved in helping? One program we absolutely love is Girls On The Run, with whom we've partnered with the past few years! We wholeheartedly believe in their mission of empowerment, which focuses on building confidence, kindness, and decision-making skills through fitness with young girls.

As a native Rochesterian, I take pride in spending time in my city. Even though I grew up in the area, Rochester is one of those places that seems to have endless discovery opportunities.

One pocket of the city that captivates locals and tourists alike are the Park & Monroe Avenue neighborhoods. I recently spent a Saturday exploring “Park/Monroe,” and it certainly was a day well spent.

Park Your Car, Stay A While

Park Avenue is artsy, hip, and memorable. Home to adorable boutiques and tasty restaurants – from coffee shops to late-night bites, Sunday brunch to date night fare, there’s something for everyone here in Rochester's highly walkable neighborhood.

To start my Saturday on Park, I went to Pearson’s Market and Café, a relatively new spot that quickly captivates. In addition to a large beverage menu, Pearson’s serves breakfast and lunch daily. General Manager Lisa Brayda says, “We value creating an environment that exudes warmth and the genuine care of hospitality.”

After enjoying a cappuccino, I was ready for something sweet. If you’re on Park with a sweet tooth, going to Caramel Bakery and Bar is always a good decision. With a pastry case that changes every two weeks, including vegan and gluten-free options, Caramel is a great choice.

MEET ME ON MONROE & PARK MONROE & PARK

Next, I stopped in to Figgy Studio & Shop – my absolute favorite place to grab a gift for a friend (or myself). Owners Ellie Rothfuss and Crystal Stanley started their business in 2017 by crafting smallbatch, high quality, affordable jewelry for everyone right in their own dining rooms. Ellie and Crystal say, “Since then, we have discovered a love and passion for working with natural gemstones, a variety of metals, and polymer clay." Figgy now features their jewelry as well as handcrafted items from over 70 local artists. One final shout out for Park Avenue is Pourin’ Joy, a neighborhood cocktail bar that Joe Joy and Adam Kirkpatrick opened in May 2022. Adam says, “Our goal is to create a fun and uplifting atmosphere for everyone in our community to come and enJOY together.” With stellar hospitality and amazing staff, this gem on Park will be a hit this summer – and year-round.

"artsy, hip, & memorable!

"

Monroe Avenue is quite long and spans from the village of Pittsford, through Brighton, into the heart of Rochester.

First, I stopped in Archivist Books, a Black and queer-owned independent bookstore by Dartmouth Street that opened in March this year. Owner Taylor Thomas says, “Archivist Books is a place where queer people can see themselves reflected on every book on the shelf.” The small yet mighty store is a fantastic addition to our community.

Next, I made a visit to Archimage, a store that, in my mind, represents the spirit of Monroe Avenue. First opened in 1983, I think of a visit to this place as an adventure in a bottle. Original owner, Yong Bom Kim-Fredell describes Archimage as “Mary Poppin’s carpet bag –it is endless,” with eclectic items of all kinds. I always cheer up in Archimage – with the dozens of toys, beautiful jewelry, practical kitchen utensils, and funky socks, it’s hard not to smile by the time you walk out the door.

I made sure to go to Stem Rochester, because I am their biggest fan. On special occasions, I treat myself to a new houseplant from Stem’s bewitching collection. In honor of the day’s journey through the neighborhood, I chose a beautiful jade plant that now resides happily in my kitchen. I cannot recommend Stem enough – you’ll grow to love their selection quickly.

If you're looking for a treat, try CRUMPETS on Monroe Ave. - with its bright blue exterior, you can't miss it! This beautiful café offers the community homemade crumpets, made fresh daily, along with an extensive tea selection and scrumptious homemade seasonal jams and marmalades. Stop in for a breakfast crumpet egg and cheese "sandwich," or indulge in a weekly special that can be savory (crumpets and gravy, anyone?) or sweet, like clotted cream with fresh lemon curd and jam.

My adventures for the day didn’t end here! I traveled up the road a bit to Pane Vino in Pittsford. Pane Vino is a favorite of mine for pasta, pizza, and sandwiches. The classy yet casual ambiance is the perfect spot for nearly every occasion. I also love their greens & beans, a staple of garlicky deliciousness that is a must at the restaurant! I recommend Pane Vino to anyone looking for a good nosh.

Park + Monroe = A Delightful Pairing

My Saturday was one for the books. What a delight it is to explore new places, spend time in familiar favorites, and appreciate a great day in my hometown. I have a soft spot for the Park/Monroe Avenue neighborhood. It has its own personality, and I rate it 10/10.

Celebrate the spirit of everyday heroes who show love triumphs over all. From grandparents and pet adopters to nurses, teachers, and first responders, these are the new faces of heroism. This summer, join us in savoring drinks that give back to so many remarkable individuals in Rochester.

“Our desire is to honor the people who put a lump in our throats and a tear in our eye.”

Greg and Marlene Fagen, founders and owners of Heroes Brewing Company on Atlantic Ave want to show the Rochester community that not all heroes wear capes and fly through the sky to fight crime. A hero can be a grandparent raising grandchildren, people adopting pets, every nurse, doctor, teacher, coach, police, fire, EMTs, soldiers, veterans, and so many more.

Founded in 2020, Heroes is dedicated to honoring the heroes of our community with the “good beer” they deserve. Founding a brewery comes with a myriad of unexpected challenges, but Greg says, “what hasn't wavered is our desire to honor the people who put a lump in our throats and a tear in our eye.”

Each beer is dedicated to a local charity, non-profit, or individual hero, with a portion of each sale donated to the cause it represents. Since opening, they’ve sold over 34,000 cans of beer, donating to over 75 charities and non-profit organizations in the process.

Raise a glass to local heroes with every sip!

Walter’s Warriors IPA

An American IPA with inviting aromas of pineapple, melon, and citrus fruits carry you into a medium-bodied ale with just enough bite. Walter's Warriors is the result of our collaboration with Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester. Walter suffered from multiple ailments when he arrived at Lollypop Farm, but with the help of the dedicated clinical team, Walter became an ambassador for the shelter. We celebrate the team at Lollypop for their unwavering commitment to bettering the lives of animals—and to all of you who adopt, care, and support this local organization.

Let's Go Fishin' Kolsch

For Greg, one that’s particularly close to his heart is from the Heroes' early days: a Kolsch named Let's Go Fishin' dedicated to Greg’s childhood hero and the father of one of his oldest friends. “I was a pretty high energy kid, and Bob showed such patience and grace towards me and was always inviting me to different family fishing trips they took. Some of my greatest memories from childhood are with that family.”

When Let’s Go Fishin’ was introduced, the brewery donated to Pittsford’s Powder Mill Park Fish Hatchery in Bob’s name. The beer makes regular appearances on their rotating menu, each time with donations sent to the hatchery.

Gigi’s Coconut Porter

A fruit beer that marries toasted coconut and vanilla with notes of chocolate malt. GiGi’s Playhouse Rochester empowers those with Down syndrome and their families to reach their highest potential. Their custom, research-based curriculum works towards advancing literacy, math skills, gross and fine motor skills, improving low muscle tone, building self-esteem, preparing for the workforce and more while fostering acceptance, awareness and networking resources for parents, siblings and the community. All programs are FREE of charge.

WITH A LOCAL TWIST

Summertime is filled with family and friends, sunshine, and laughter, and usually a picnic or two. While packing sandwiches and heading to your local park is enjoyable, why not try something new and locally themed this season? Grab local beverages and snacks to fill your basket with –and enjoy supporting small business owners in the process!

The Best Spots

You can always head to your local park for a picnic – Hamlin Beach State Park, Ontario Beach Park, Highland Park, and the Seabreeze area in Irondequoit all have great views.

For a local experience, gather with friends and family at spots like the Sunken Gardens near Highland Park, known for its peaceful atmosphere. You can also enjoy a picnic with a view at Seneca Park Zoo.

Downtown's High Falls boasts a stunning 96-foot waterfall backdrop, and the George Eastman Museum's gardens offer a serene and historic setting. Further out, Sonnenberg Gardens in Canandaigua and the Port of Rochester on Lake Ontario provide picturesque settings for an enjoyable outdoor meal.

Refreshing Local Sips

What’s a picnic without something special to toast with? Head to renowned Living Roots Winery on University Ave in Rochester or venture to the vineyard in Hammondsport to grab some of the best wine in the area, locally made and family owned. The Session Sparkling Rose and the Pet-Nat Riesling are great options to toast to your day.

If you’re not a wine drinker, perhaps Black Button Distillery, also on University, would be a good option. Their CanBee is a great drink for any summer event!

And if you’re looking for a locally owned non-alcoholic option, try KatBoocha for a refreshing option that will have your gut smiling right along with you. Their new Lavender Earl with black tea, lavender, and bergamot is juicy and refreshing!

Savory Delights

Who doesn’t love a good charcuterie board? To elevate your picnic, reach out to locally owned Cheese & Charcuterie on E. Ridge Rd. They’ll put together a beautiful assortment of meats, cheeses, veggies, and fruits of your choosing – the presentation alone will enhance any picnic!

Stop by Pittsford Farms Dairy & Bakery or Leo's Bakery & Deli to fill your picnic basket with delicious, locally made delights. Both establishments offer a delightful array of locally sourced cheeses, farm-fresh produce, freshly baked goods, and a variety of grab-and-go items.

Don't Forget Dessert

Rochester has great bakeries with plenty of goodies to satiate that sweet craving at the end of your picnic (or make your entire picnic dessert-themed!)

Yeah Baby! Bakes on S. Union St, Spencerport is my favorite for their deliciously themed macarons, touting the tagline “not your mama’s macarons.” Deliciously divine!

A few other favorites include: Savoia Bakery, Leo’s Bakery, Get Caked Bakery, Scratch Bakery, and Village Bakery.

"The best memories are made around a picnic basket."

Dinner Picnic Vibes

Looking to change things up?

Take your picnic to an outdoor music event! Check social media and websites of your favorite local artists and settle in to listen to their tunes floating through the air as you nibble.

Some great outdoor music spots that often have live music around Rochester include:

• Port of Rochester

• Marge’s Lakeside Inn

• Rochester Party in the Park

• Pittsford Canal Park

• Casa Larga Patio Parties

• Webster Caring Community Concerts

Picnic In Style

Maybe you don’t have a picnic basket or outdoor serving ware. Perhaps you don’t have a blanket big enough for two or more guests. That’s where your local secondhand stores can come in! Such stores have loads of wicker baskets, blankets, and plastic kitchenware. Don’t break the bank trying to venture out on your picnic – have fun picking out items at the thrift store and putting everything together for the day!

Many locally-owned boutiques and shops could fit your picnic aesthetic. Parkleigh on Park Ave has eclectic finds for any occasion, as well as great snacks to add to your basket. A Different Point of View on Monroe and Janis Reed Interiors Boutique in East Rochester also have items to elevate your picnic.

Elevate Your Picnic

If you’re looking to get really fancy or plan something for a special celebration, you may consider reaching out to Barbara and Alyssa of Homemade Events. They’ll set up a picnic in your backyard, or at any venue/area, custom to your likes and interests. Their setups are stunning and all you’ll need to do is show up and enjoy yourself!

Who knew a picnic could be so fun to plan?

Venture out this summer to a new local spot, with your local bites and sips, and be sure to tag #LOVEHOMEMAG when you do – we’d love to be included in your fun!

Happy Picnic-ing!

pg. 38 Creating an Inviting Home both Indoor & Out with Laura Seymour

It doesn’t take long to get inspired when looking at photos of Laura Seymour’s home. As a design enthusiast and owner of the hip Interior Styling business, Hitch + Cord, Laura has spent the last 15 years building her business, designing two homes, and defining her “mid-clectic” style.

As someone who has always believed the design of your home should be intentional and a true reflection of who you are and what you love, her home is just that. With a mix of textures, colors and elements that combine mid-century design with contemporary style (and a splash of boho sprinkled in), her space is as stylish as it is welcoming.

From a gallery wall featuring group photos that she has been collecting for nearly 20 years to a signature Eames Lounge Chair by Herman Miller – there is no shortage of interest in her space and each time you look at it, you’ll discover something new to draw your eye in.

She gives us a glimpse into her style, home and advice for creating spaces that are as comfortable as they are inviting.

Crafting Comfort

Creating an Inviting Home both Indoor & Out with Laura Seymour

Make it cozy. “You’re the one who lives there and needs to love it,” Laura says. She advises clients to choose whatever makes you feel comfortable as you want your home to feel relaxing and cozy. Selecting comfortable seating, soft furnishings and bringing in elements from nature such as plants and natural materials can help achieve this.

Be open to new ideas. Be open to things you wouldn’t normally consider and take one or two risks per space. “Often clients don’t know what they like until they see it, but incorporating different colors, patterns, or materials may achieve a look you really love,” she shares.

Get artwork on your walls. Don’t wait to find the perfect piece to get something on your walls. What you hang doesn’t have to be permanent and may not be your “forever” piece, but it will make your space feel more finished than blank walls, and you can update it in the future.

laura's Tips for Styling Your Home:

Mixing Old & New.

While she isn’t necessarily a trend-follower, she does think it’s important to stay relevant. “Not all trends will work for everyone,” Laura shares, but she does get inspired when she sees new pieces that can be incorporated into her home. Whether pulling inspiration from the design industry, her travels, or even the architecture of the home, she believes it’s natural for your style to change and evolve over time. For her, that often involves mixing old and new, such as her collage wall of group photos she has been collecting for nearly two decades.

Creating a Backyard oasis

Although her backyard is not what you would typically see in Rochester, she used the challenges she had as an opportunity to design something unique. Nestled in a shaded neighborhood, the space had plenty of trees but could not grow grass, so her and her family decided to completely hardscape the area and embrace the space for what it is.

The finished design includes large pavers, pea gravel, and multiple decks that create layers of space. There was also a huge retaining wall with concrete cinder blocks to contend with, so she DIY-ed a mid-century wood wall with hanging planters to mask the unsightly space.

Now her yard is filled with flowers and greenery that soften the hard materials and it’s filled with plenty of outdoor furniture and accessories that extend her eclectic style to the backyard.

“Home

for me is where I feel safe and comfortable. Where I can surround myself with the people and things that bring me joy and fulfillment. Your home should be a true reflection of you; and mine is just that. My favorite place to be is home.” – Laura Seymour

Laura created a mid-century wood wall with hanging planters to hide the existing retaining wall on the property of her 1960s home.

Whatever challenge lies in your backyard, she offers these tips to create your own oasis:

Design the space in zones. Think about the space and what you want to do out there, such as activities, preferences, entertaining and family needs. From there, divide the space into zones such as an area for lounging, a functional space for dining, or a garden area.

Think comfort and durability. Since this is where we want to sit and relax when the weather is nice, be sure to keep both comfort and durability in mind. Especially in Upstate NY, make sure your furniture stands up to the weather and invest in high-quality furniture covers, particularly if leaving it out yearround. Make sure your space has enough shade to be comfortable as well, using umbrellas or a pergola if you don’t have many trees.

Soften the space. Bring in plants, flowers, color, and texture to soften the look of the space. Lighting can be a great way to jazz it up as well. String lights are awesome; they give that cozy, soft bistro feeling but are also functional and add ambiance to your space.

Creating a Pet-Friendly Space. Don’t forget your furry friends! “Whether indoors or out, dedicating space for your pets is important to make them feel like part of the family,” shares Laura (and her adorable dog, Dutch!). Make sure your pets have a place of their own where they feel safe and comfortable. If they go on the furniture, choose performance fabrics or something easy to wipe down like leather and select washable fabrics for pillows, throws, and area rugs. “They even make beautiful throw covers that look like faux fur that are specifically made for pets and are machine-washable,” she says.
