Our success is built on many pillars
In 2011, GW achieved net sales of over a billion euros for the first time, representing a one hundred per cent increase over the last decade. The strategy behind this was never based on (relative) size, but on competitiveness, sustainability and independence. By independence we mean the freedom to take business decisions autonomously and to determine the direction and rate of GW’s development for ourselves, fully aware that we are exposed to external factors and rely on the support of all stakeholders. Our current success is based on a solid foundation and supported by many pillars. Domestic
and international land transport have recently held their own in the face of tough competition, the logistics solutions division is growing in stature all the time, Air & Sea has shown great strength in a volatile environment, CEP is defending its excellent market position in Austria and business areas such as inet, dicall and x|vise are making an impression through innovative concepts and a high level of competency. Individual examples of outstanding achievement at regional and divisional level also deserve a special mention, as do ambitious projects involving leading customers from various sectors. Particular emphasis has also been placed on sales structure and

Green logistics: Gebrüder Weiss relies on wind power Sustainability at Gebrüder Weiss is more than just lip service. By retroactively purchasing a wind farm in April 2011, the company completed a further sustainability project. And with this investment in renewable energy once again set a clear example in the compatibility of ecology and economy. The wind farm in northern Germany consists of four wind turbines with a nominal capacity of two megawatts each. Around 20 gigawatt hours of electricity will be produced per year, which accounts for more than 100 % of the Group’s energy requirements. The purchased E-82 type wind turbines with a hub height of 108 metres (manufactured by Enercon) are at the cutting edge of technology, gearless and consequently
low-maintenance and cost-efficient. Another advantage: Wind energy makes an important contribution to climate protection, since large quantities of greenhouse gas emissions can be avoided through this natural energy source. In the case of the Gebrüder Weiss Wind Farm, around 12,000 tonnes of CO ² will be saved each year. The reduction of CO ² emissions is one of the core goals of GW’s environmental management. There are many applications where fossil fuels, especially oil products, still cannot be substituted. But Gebrüder Weiss is permanently working to find alternatives and to be at the cutting edge of technology. This applies to the choice of vehicles, to the construction of logistics systems, and also to the use of alternative traffic carriers (e.g. rail).

Energy-efficient: first climate-neutral logistics hall in Austria Investing in the future – the climate-neutral logistics hall in Wörgl.
Gebrüder Weiss is committed to sustainability, as proven once again by the construction of Austria’s first climate-neutral logistics hall at the Wörgl site.

The entire construction project was supported by ClimatePartner Austria GmbH, international strategic consultants in voluntary climate protection. In accordance with their approach of “prevention is better than reduction is better than offset”, even the building materials were chosen with climate-neutral aspects in mind: the new hall was built entirely using a wood frame method because by avoiding the usual metal panels, less CO ² is generated. In addition, the use of an energy-saving heat pump as the heat source will achieve a reduction in greenhouse gases of around 59 tonnes per year. These structural measures to reduce CO ² are rounded off by a conversion of the entire logistics facility to renewable energy. The new logistics warehouse created 1,300 m² of new handling and commissioning space, along with an additional cold store with 150 pallet spaces.
Employer qualities: Gebrüder Weiss defends leading position Gebrüder Weiss is one of the best employers in Austria – this was confirmed in 2011 when the company was awarded once again in the Austria-wide “Great Place to Work” competition. Moreover, Gebrüder Weiss received the special prize as Austria’s “Best Employer for Apprentices”. According to the jury, the company’s training concept is very sophisticated and they offer numerous apprenticeships in various professions. The extensive measures and special training range from professional seminars to apprentice camps, where both professional as well as social skills are developed. What ultimately convinced the jury was the standardised quality testing which accompanies the training. In the 2011 Swiss Employer Award competition, Gebrüder Weiss was ranked 19 th among 80
participants and reached an outstanding 6 th place in the individual category “Personnel Development”.

Image ranking: A top 30 place Gebrüder Weiss achieved a further success with its reputation: in the image ranking survey, annually held by the Austrian business magazine “GEWINN”, Gebrüder Weiss was ranked 29th from a total of 1,000 participating large companies. This means that Gebrüder Weiss – despite a comparatively low advertising budget – has moved up 17 places compared to the previous year and now ranks among Austria’s best companies and brands. The ranking is based on the results of a questionnaire that had been sent out to more than 3,000 Austrian Managers. The questions were two-tier: on the one hand, the respondents named the company they thought enjoyed the best reputation in Austria; on the other hand, questions included the name of the company with the best image in eight categories: management
quality, financial strength of the company, reputation as a career forger, marketing and advertising presence, innovativeness, responsibility for the environment, product and service quality, sustainability. In Vorarlberg, the company’s “home base”, Gebrüder Weiss has an excellent recognition degree of 99 per cent, as the “hit parade of Vorarlberg brands 2011” showed. A pleasing result for Gebrüder Weiss: 29 th place in the image ranking.

America: Gebrüder Weiss Air & Sea is expanding its network A key milestone in the past year was the expansion of the South American network by alliance partner Röhlig Logistics. Professional structures for transport and logistics services are now available in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay as well. As a result of the cooperation, the Gebrüder Weiss and Röhlig global Air & Sea network has been extended by seven branches. Also in northern America, the Weiss-Röhlig network was expanded by means of company takeovers and the opening of branch offices in Boston, Chicago and Miami. With continuing growth, the Air & Sea network is playing an increasingly important role in the Group. Sea freight, in particular, has seen strong growth in recent years. Gebrüder Weiss Air & Sea intends to continue to focus on the ongoing development of the Project and Break Bulk segment.

First step into the Caucasus: GW and Tegeta Motors Ltd. establish joint venture Gebrüder Weiss opened up new markets in 2011 and also laid the foundation for the first pioneering presence in the Caucasus region. A joint venture has been established with Tegeta Motors Ltd. with Gebrüder Weiss having a majority stake. The joint venture operates under the name Gebrüder Weiss and offers land transport, air and sea freight services as well as logistics solutions. By entering the market in Georgia, Gebrüder Weiss is strengthening its regional organisation and develops business in the Caucasus region and the so-called “Stan” countries. Through the joint venture, Gebrüder Weiss is building a strategically important platform in the Caucasus – a region that is developing into a hub between the booming markets in Asia and Europe. Investment in Czech Republic: New location near Prague Gebrüder Weiss is increasing its presence on the Czech market. In Jeneč, located in the immediate vicinity of Prague, the transport and logistics company is building a new branch with an office complex and cross-docking facilities.

The terminal will be situated in a convenient location near the international airport with easy access to major traffic routes around the Czech capital. Investments will amount to approx. 15 million euro. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in late November 2011. The terminal is built on an area of around 75,000 m². In a first phase, until the autumn of 2012, 10,000 m² of handling and logistics space (a cross-docking warehouse with 61 gates) and 3,000 m² of office space are built. Depending on the needs, further logistics areas will be added. Jeneč is the eighth location of Gebrüder Weiss in the Czech Republic. Other branches exist in Rudná, Říčany-Jažlovice, Ostrava, Modřice, České Budějovice, Hradec Králové and Prague.

Environmentally friendly and efficient: first gas-powered truck in use

In normal operation the 40-tonne truck runs on a mixture of 70% methane gas (35% climate-neutral biogas, 35% natural gas) and 30% diesel. This reduces annual CO ² emissions by 58% compared to all-diesel vehicles. The HGV travels regularly between the sites of Gebrüder Weiss customer Siemens Austria in Vienna, enabling environmentally friendly transport management. In collaboration with project partners Salzburg AG and Siemens AG, Gebrüder Weiss had the Volvo truck converted to a dual-fuel system by Infinite GmbH in Salzburg in just two weeks. The vehicle meets Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle (EEV) requirements, presently the strictest harmful emission regulations for internal combustion engines.

Integral transport solutions Land transport forms the backbone of the traditional company Gebrüder Weiss. 70 per cent of the Group’s overall turnover was generated by this division in 2011 representing over 706 million euros. 87 branches throughout Europe have contributed to this success, as well as a forwardlooking, international focus, the continued development of platform transport and a large team of highly committed employees. Another key factor for success is the strong partner network: Gebrüder Weiss has been cooperating with the majority of its partners for several decades. In addition, the company is one of the founding members of the System Alliance Europe (SAE).
Turnover in the land transport sector increased yet again due to stable to positive economic development in Gebrüder Weiss’ core markets. Growth amounts to more than 10 per cent compared with the previous year. Gebrüder Weiss also made significant progress last year in terms of quality with GW pro.line. What was the highlight of 2011? One of the obvious highlights was the launch of GW pro.line in March 2011. This was an important milestone in the continued improvement of our general cargo services in Europe. Also worth mentioning is the successful handling of quantities during the extremely strong months

of October and November when unprecedented daily quantities were processed. The GW organisation displayed an excellent ability to work under pressure during this period in various locations in Austria. The GW pro.line catchword: Can you provide an initial summary? Production associated with our wide range of direct transport services has proven effective and operates smoothly with the integration of internal and external platforms. The costs have been in line with the market. GW pro.line provided additional impulses which support the excellent development of our general cargo transport services in Europe.

This year will certainly be marked by market insecurity and a certain scepticism with regard to the global economic situation. Emphasis will be placed on sales, with an increased focus in 2012 on the customer value chain. Of course, we will also continue to work on the optimisation of existing business. Furthermore, one of our core themes will be the continued development of process know-how.
Reference project The distance between Lauterach and Singapore is 10,220 kilometres as the crow flies. The Vorarlberg high-tech company Tridonic, which specialises in individual light installations, adopted a “made in Austria” logistics solution in 2011 in order to continue to succeed in the booming Asian market in the future. Wolfgang Brunner’s team created an individual warehouse logistics system for the Tridonic branch in Singapore, the Asian hub of the company based in Dornbirn. State-of-the-art warehouse management systems and intelligent IT processes according to European standards help Tridonic to respond effectively to the leading markets in Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The assignment in the southeast Asian city state is a first for Gebrüder Weiss: For the first time outside Europe, picking takes place voucherless.

GW charters fixed spaces on major routes and thus provides a reliable storage space guarantee. Not only has Gebrüder Weiss Air & Sea fully recovered from the global economic and financial crisis, it has also emerged stronger: Based on the consolidated turnover of 236.8 million euros, 2011 was by far the best year in the division’s history. This corresponds to growth of 9.4 per cent. “This success has been possible thanks to the strength of our global network,” confirms Joe Lässer in the interview. What was the highlight of 2011? An important milestone was the expansion of the South American network through our global business partner Röhlig Logistics. Our constantly expanding Air & Sea network is playing an increasingly important role within the Group. Sea freight, in particular, has seen strong growth in recent years. Transport volumes increased significantly in 2011. This success

is also due to economic reasons: in the context of our uncertain worldwide economic situation, many companies have transferred their transport routes from air to sea. The complete relocation of the previous forms of transport has not yet taken place as a result of the adaptation of the supply chain. Many companies have remained loyal to sea routes. What is the situation with regard to the expansion of the orange network? We have expanded our service portfolio in the
USA with the takeover of three companies: the new location in Boston is extremely important for transpacific transport between China and Europe. Our South American hub is in Miami. We are also now able to offer comprehensive customs services in the USA. With the acquisition of the transport specialists JHB Express in Tokyo and Osaka, we have also become a fully-fledged, internationally aligned forwarder in Japan.
Independence is extremely important for Gebrüder Weiss. How can this value be applied in every-day business? Independence for me also relates to the indi-
vidual within his decision-making area. As a service company, we rely on making quick decisions. We encourage our employees in this respect, in accordance with the regulation of approval powers. I am therefore convinced that our staff’s independence contributes substantially to corporate success. What are the plans for 2012? There are some exciting projects ahead. We will continue to invest in the Far East and are currently developing Vietnam as a Weiss-Röhlig country. We would also like to promote our relatively new but already extremely successful Project and Break Bulk business on a global scale. In order to develop high-capacity transport in south-eastern Europe, we also intend to make more use of the Danube as a traffic artery. I am also delighted that we are enjoying increasing success in the area of global human
resources development. We have implemented successful programmes in this context over recent years and are currently inspiring a considerable number of high-potential candidates to join our company. We prepare existing employees as far as possible to deal with the increasingly complex tasks presented in our international network.
Reference project The orange network created even closer links in 2011 with the continent of the future, Asia. The joint venture Weiss-Röhlig acquired the Japanese logistics specialist JHB Express based in Tokyo and Osaka. Weiss-Röhlig Japan quickly integrated the company and is continuing its air and sea freight business seamlessly. All employees continue to work for the joint venture. In addition to boosting our inner-Asian transport services, the increase in capacity will be particularly beneficial for our major trading partners in the USA and Europe.

Having a passion for providing excellent services The Gebrüder Weiss parcel service (GWP) is the master of all classes. In the field of domestic parcel services, GWP provides a comprehensive 24-hour service for parcels up to 31.5 kilogrammes from Lake Constance to Lake Neusiedl. As a partner of DPD, GWP looks beyond the horizon and links Austria to the international parcel service. All service standards, such as online proof of delivery, seamless Track & Trace as well as automatic parcel insurance, are fulfilled by GWP with the same level of reliability as the Austrian market leader.
Parcel services are in vogue: the courier, express and parcel services (CEP) division was able to gain four per cent in 2011 with consolidated net sales of 122.1 million euros. These great results also reflect the high motivation of our staff, explains Andreas Winkelmayer in an interview.
What was your highlight in 2011? That was certainly our B2C project with BIPA, where we are currently shipping 4,000 parcels a month. We also strongly focussed on sustainability in the past year. For example by sending 30 per cent of all invoices by e-mail and offering regular fuel-saving training sessions for our truck drivers. A further highlight for me was the Marco Polo programme, offering our employees the opportunity to gain valuable experiences abroad. How important is independence in your field of work? Independence leaves us room for manoeuvre,

Reference project From shampoo and baby food to flip-flops: 8,500 products of the Austrian perfumery chain BIPA have been stored in the GW Maria Lanzendorf branch since June 2011. On a surface of 1,500 m ² , the BIPA products are picked and packed, before handing them over to DPD. The all-round, carefree package, which is a matter of course at Gebrüder Weiss, is rounded off with paper board containers as well as delivery and return slips that were specially designed in magenta, according to BIPA’s corporate design. Due to a sophisticated logistics concept, hair spray, shower gel and deodorant arrive at their destination within two days. For Gebrüder Weiss, BIPA is the first customer in the field of B2C – and thus the first milestone on the way to new business models.

In the inbound sector, the previous year’s high standards were maintained. In the outbound sector, new reference customers could be won. “We were able to position ourselves really well in 2011 because our services are based exclusively in Austria.” A logical and local approach give dicall a clear lead in terms of quality. “We represent our customers’ companies at the highest level,” explains Maurer. In 2012 dicall is continuing to focus on increasing its international presence in cooperation with GeoPost, DPD’s express and parcel service provider in Germany. “But above all we want to remain a reliable and competent partner for the Austrian market,” says Maurer.

leisure+sports logistics more widely. “We are making very good progress and we will continue to be systematic in our pursuit of success.” In 2012 the main event will be the Olympic Summer Games in London – a ‘home match’ for Bannwarth and his team.

since the introduction of e-zoll in 2006,” Thomas Zeillinger is delighted to report. “This consolidates our position as market leader in the customs clearance business and underlines the outstanding work and expertise of all our subsidiaries – without them, this success would not have been possible.” A key topic over the past year has been Croatia’s entry into the EU in July 2013. As Gebrüder Weiss is considered a model business by the Austrian authorities, a delegation consisting of high-ranking representatives from the Croatian customs authorities visited Gebrüder Weiss to look at customs procedures from a business perspective. 2012 will be just as challenging. “We want to raise the standard of our services even higher, despite the economic crisis,” says Zeillinger. “In 2012, too, we will consolidate our reputation in the market, due to our customs expertise.”

Every year since 1993, almost a million tons of freight have been transported by this environmentally friendly, low-carbon method – not just in Austria, but in the whole of Europe. And completely unaffected by traffic jams. Walter Dolezal on developments at GW Rail Cargo: For GW Rail Cargo, 2011 saw a large contract from the oil industry, with 60,000 tons of the aviation fuel kerosene being transported to Schwechat near Vienna and 35,000 tons being transported to Munich airport. The procedure involved the exact coordination of loading times at the Slovenian port of Koper, train routes and unloading time slots at the storage facility in Munich. “Both contracts were carried out to the complete satisfaction of the customer,” Walter Dolezal is pleased to report. In 2011 a

total of 800,000 tons of freight were handled by GW Rail Cargo. In 2012 Dolezal and his team will focus again on southern and south-eastern Europe, working closely with European rail companies. “In 2012 GW Rail Cargo will continue to stand for expert solutions in the field of railway logistics,” says Dolezal.

Everyone wants to be able to behave in a free and autonomous way. But what does independence actually mean? How does it manifest itself? And how can it be maintained? Free at last! Everyone knows that great summer feeling you get when the rippling sea you’ve been eagerly anticipating suddenly appears on the horizon after hours of driving. The mere sight of that distant blue ribbon awakens longforgotten memories of past holidays. Likewise, everyone knows and loves the exciting and exotic scents of foreign cities, or the sense of freedom you experience when you’re just a stone’s throw from your mountain shelter in the
middle of nowhere, and can finally forget all the stresses and strains of urban life and take a rest from work. At last there’s no alarm clock to interrupt your deep sleep every morning, no set time to get to the office, no meetings, no travel plans and no business trips – at least not for a week or two. Independence and relaxation: that’s what millions of Europeans want from their summer holidays year after year. Holidays are the loveliest time of year for many people and the time when they generally succeed in achieving the desired sense of independence and relaxation. However, closer examination shows that more and more people and organisations are struggling to achieve the same in

How does it manifest itself and how does it become apparent? And what can you do to achieve, protect and maintain your own independence? It’s time to take a closer look at a fundamental concept of modern life. Freedom, not isolation “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” John Donne, an English poet who philosophised about the metaphysical phenomena of human existence in the 16 th century, was already well acquainted with the peculiar characteristic of human freedom almost 500 years ago. Complete independence is almost impossible in the age of global networking, whether it is through social networks on the internet, such as Facebook, Twitter and Xing, or through economic integration in the global market. And yet inde-

pendence is considered to be something of fundamental value, not only in the national and political sense, but also in an economic context. Every company is striving to make a commercial profit without being constrained by directives; establish an organisational culture that enables every link in the chain to function and work at its best; and invest in long-term visions, rather than having to respond to short-term currency fluctuations. It’s a marathon, not a sprint The route to independence is generally not a
sprint, but a marathon. Only people who save their strength and have something in reserve for times of need will be able to make the surge at the decisive moment and reach their goal. After all every freedom must be fought for. When Thomas Jefferson gained independence for his country in 1776 and made his preamble to the King of England, he was laying the foundations for what is today the most powerful and rich-

In international law, sovereignty is defined as the fundamental independence of a country from other countries and its right to rule on matters relating to its own national constitution. Even today, nations are striving for independence and the right to control their own future. The United Nations (UN) grants independence to every nation – at least in theory. Nonetheless independence has its own cost. Remaining independent together Friction is created when the independence of one party restricts the independence of
another. Violent conflicts are often the result of this kind of activism. In the age of global networking and the interconnection of nations and societies, it’s the end of the road for the old idea of the independent state. More and more countries are giving up elements of their sovereignty to supra-national organisations such as the European Union (EU), the UN or, in times of financial crisis, the World Bank. Countries can often achieve more when they work together rather than pursuing an isolated desire for absolute independence. The more we cooperate at international level and the more intensive this is, the less independent we are, but then there is also less danger of violent conflicts being played out. The boundaries of independence Independence is not an end in itself. Like in an orchestra, where every instrument gives up a part of its independence for the benefit of musical harmony, countries must also make compromises from time to time like all other social structures. Parliamentarians, for example, are guaranteed an independent mandate in most democratic countries. Whether they rely on this in a vote or whether they feel the compulsion to vote, depends on each individual. Philosophers have been racking their brains about the boundaries of independence for many hundreds of years. Immanuel Kant, for example, saw independence as the opportunity for people to determine who and what they are in their capacity as intelligent beings. Striving too hard for independence can lead to self-determination becoming a problem – particularly when it is viewed from a social perspective such as isolation. Living together is only possible when people have the opportunity to play an independent

role in social processes. This has long been true, not only in politics. Independence isn’t given to us for free. Success is a prerequisite for independence. Simply put, you can only act, live and manage matters free from interventions if you can afford to. When young adults gradually break away from the parental home, they can only reach their desired freedom in the long-term if they can provide their own food, a roof over their heads and everything else that comes with the adult world. A country is no more in a position to do without partnerships, whether of a strategic, political or commercial nature, than a company is. The stronger the partnership, the more impressive the external impact. Often all that is needed is cooperation with competitors. In times of densely networked international economies and the eagerness for short-term profits in many

equity markets, the value of independence is catching on more and more in people’s minds. Anyone who doesn’t think in quarters but in generations is no longer looking for a quick win on the stock markets, but instead is looking for sustainable solutions in order to preserve their independence. Today, strong partnerships and collaboration guarantee an individual’s independence in more and more market sectors.

No independence without dependability After all independence also means being the architect of your own good fortune. For example, the more successful a division of a company is, the more customers it attracts or the more turnover it generates, the more likely head office will let it have a free rein with its projects. It is also fair to conclude that a department can demonstrate more success when it can act independently and flexibly. Granting another person independence has a lot to do with trust, and not only when it involves a conflict situation

Independence requires strong partnerships An independent person is someone who strives for freedom and autonomy, and who needs their own space in a partnership. However an independent person is also someone who has a partner by their side to give them encouragement and complement their strengths. Effective partnerships profit from both. For Gebrüder Weiss, independence and partnership are not contradictory. Autonomy has given the company the opportunity to follow its long-term vision. However joint partnerships, collaborations and strategic alliances can also make use of the synergies and strengths of a collective group. This extra benefit is worth taking a look at. Partnerships protect the commercial strengths of the group and can improve the profitability and competitiveness of the cooperating companies. In this sense, the concept of a partnership means extra freedom
to act and grow, as well as maintain a strong presence on the market. This improves the independence of all partners that are involved. 35 years of working in partnership – a success story Gebrüder Weiss and Hellmann Worldwide Logistics have been working together since 1 October 1977. Initially they collaborated on transport operations from Hellmann’s offices in northern Germany to and from Austria. In 1991 Hungary was added, followed in 2008 by five other countries where Gebrüder Weiss is represented.

The current majority shareholder, Thomas W. Herwig, bought back this share of the company in 1994 with the aim of being able to pass on a strong and independent company to his sons. The very successful collaboration between the two companies Gebrüder Weiss and Röhlig has also always been characterised by the fact that we have both wanted to remain independent. In my view, it is this that has made it so successful. For me personally, independence principally means the freedom to be able to preserve certain principles – to pursue long-term goals as a family-led company and to promote the values of trust and fairness.
