Dear Reader,

This should be said upfront – 2013 was certainly not an easy year. I don’t just mean the economic environment in general and conditions in specific markets and industries, but also the many – partly future-oriented – projects that we have had to work on and contend with. In addition to huge successes we have also had to deal with a few setbacks and then try to draw the right conclusions, learn the right lessons and face up to the consequences. Adjusting to constant change – the new normality – has in any event become a major task. In 2013, these issues along with many others have made up the mainstay of our work towards our medium-term strategy. In terms of finances, the last year has shown altogether satisfactory results. We were able to increase net sales to around EUR 1.2 billion and keep cashflow and equity ratios stable. Investment volume accounted for roughly EUR 60 million, which is even higher than the amount in 2012. Recently, the traditionally strong areas of land transport including logistics solutions, Air & Sea and CEP (courier, express and parcel) services have made the largest contribution to this development. We should also highlight the excellent performance of inet, xlvise and dicall, which complement and enhance our offer. Every day, across various countries and responsibilities, some 6,000 employees make sure that Gebrüder Weiss (GW) remains competitive and uphold the company’s good reputation. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to express my sincerest thanks to all colleagues in the “orange network”.

Looking forward, we have affirmed and redefined our corporate targets. GW has to continue growing steadily. To this end, we are concentrating on the one hand on the “East” and selected overseas markets, and on the other hand on specific and intermodal logistics solutions and innovative services. In doing so, however, we must not lose sight of traditional services such as general cargo and full truck load transport or air and sea freight. We focus first and foremost on the needs and expectations of our customers. We want to secure our competitiveness not only by providing top quality at a fair price, but by being proactive and creative and by maintaining our determination to keep improving. GW is and will remain a dependable partner that not only gets things moving but keeps them moving as well. This is how our strategy should be seen. Based on this solid foundation, we will develop further, combining tradition with innovation and ambition with a sense of proportion, making sure we act respectfully both externally and internally, abiding by rules and agreements, and striving for service excellence and customer enthusiasm as our supreme goals. Before us lie some huge challenges, which can actually be summarised in four key words: personnel, processes, portfolio and profitability. The importance of engaged, motivated employees – particularly in the service sector – goes without saying. The question rather is: how do we attract and retain good staff? What do we

9

have to do to remain an attractive employer for future generations? As far as processes are concerned, we have made great progress, but we need to keep this up. The pressure for higher productivity and precision is not going to decrease. We need to use state-of-the-art technology and new methods in order to achieve better efficiency. GW’s product range is already extensive, but could still do with some adjustments. In expanding our network, we have sent out clear signals in the Black Sea/ Central Asia region with the acquisition of the forwarder Far Freight, the establishment of our Turkish branch and the construction of the state-of-the-art facility in Tbilisi, Georgia. More are to follow.

The subject of transport modes should be highlighted – including the ecological aspects. We need to promote standardisation, while fulfilling increasingly complex supply chain demands. Furthermore, we must not lose sight of the growing B2C (business to consumer) business. In order to keep up with the pace and stay ahead of the game for our customers, we need to invest substantially. This requires an appropriate rate of return so that we are not reliant on borrowed capital.

News from the East

By opening a strategically important terminal in Tbilisi, Georgia and taking over the forwarder Far Freight, Gebrüder Weiss has been expanding its network towards Central Asia. In November 2013, Gebrüder Weiss took over the freight forwarding company Far Freight which has many years of experience handling land, air and sea transport as well as project business in Russia, the Caucasus and Asia. With this special expertise, Far Freight makes a fantastic addition to the Gebrüder Weiss portfolio and can now develop services in countries such as Turkmenistan, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and South Russia. Far Freight was founded in 1995 in Vienna and has its headquarters there as well as a branch in Naberezhnye Chelny, Russia. GW Georgia: Hub for the Caucasus region. For Gebrüder Weiss, the continuous expansion of its competence in Central Asia is of great strategic importance. In the summer of 2013, it officially opened a state-ofthe-art logistics facility in the Georgian capital Tbilisi. GW is now in a position to offer its customers “improved access to the upcoming markets in the East,” said Wolfram Senger-Weiss, a member of the Gebrüder Weiss Board. The logistics facility in Tbilisi has 10,500 square metres of handling and logistics space. A further special feature of the new location is the regular groupage freight service from Passau to Tbilisi.

A bright future for Gebrüder Weiss Czech Republic A modern handling centre in Jeneč and the new branch in Northern Bohemia expand Gebrüder Weiss Czech Republic’s extensive network. The new terminal opened in Jeneč in spring 2013 is easily accessible as it is close to the international airport and major routes around Prague. This location, with its 10,000 square metre handling and logistics facility, forms the basis for further development in the Czech Republic. A special feature of the branch is the modern ADR depot, which allows hazardous goods to be stored according to the highest current standards.

Further steps were taken towards expansion in the Czech Republic in June 2013. A new facility has been opened in Jablonec nad Nisou close to Liberec in Northern Bohemia. From here, it is possible to deliver goods within the Czech Republic and to all of Europe – particularly Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Turkey. Gebrüder Weiss Czech Republic now has six locations close to the country’s most important economic centres.

400,000 consignments in Slovakia

Since the national organisation was founded in 1993, the Gebrüder Weiss network in Slovakia has developed well – including continued expansion. At the start of September 2013, another two logistics buildings covering a total of 4,600 square metres went into operation at the existing logistics terminal in Senec, near Bratislava. 7,000 additional pallet spaces complement the existing area ideally, allowing GW to keep up with the ever increasing number of orders whilst providing the same level of quality that its customers have come to expect. Moreover, customers of GW Slovakia benefit from many years of experience in partial and full loads – especially in the automotive sector – as well as in highsecurity transports of consumer electronics. Gebrüder Weiss took its first steps into Slovakia in 1993 by opening its first office in Bratislava. Just a short while later, the first international groupage freight service started on the European network. At the start of the new millennium, further locations were opened in Žilina and Košice. In 2005, the new terminal in Senec began operations and the new building opened in 2010.

Full service logistics on the Bosphorus

Since the beginning of the year, Gebrüder Weiss has been hard at work on its multimodal service portfolio in Istanbul. At the start of 2014, Gebrüder Weiss opened its first branch in Turkey. The new team in Istanbul is offering services in the areas of overland transport, multimodal solutions and air and sea freight. Misel Yakop, who is responsible for land transport, and Ridvan Demirhan, who is responsible for air and sea freight, are jointly managing the new site. GW hopes that this dual leadership approach will emphasise and drive forward the new office’s multimodal direction. Gebrüder Weiss sees large economic potential in Turkey and good chances for positioning itself successfully as a full service logistics provider.

Weiss-Röhlig opens two new sites in Vietnam After more than a year’s construction work, Weiss-Röhlig has now officially opened two sites in Vietnam. Weiss-Rohlig’s first two branches in Vietnam are located at the country’s main hubs – in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Weiss-Röhlig Vietnam aims to seamlessly integrate this economically thriving country into the two companies’ international logistics network and as a result expand the network on the South China Sea. A total of twenty people are employed in the two locations, using their regional know-how to offer a wide range of services in the areas of Air & Sea freight as well as Projects & Break Bulk. What makes Vietnam a particularly attractive market for companies from western industrialised nations is its need for industrial machinery, replacement parts, highly specialist goods and niche products. In addition to the international market, the aim is to make an impact on domestic customers with our wide range of services.

Diehl goes orange

Amazing logistics solutions

New branch in Hungary

As of the end of 2013, the freight forwarding company Diehl, with its headquarters in Esslingen near Stuttgart, has been operating under the Gebrüder Weiss brand. In addition to the reorganisation of all business documents, this can also be seen in the company’s outward appearance. All Diehl sites are to be adapted to the GW design. With the rebranding, the 350 employee-strong forwarder is now also externally identifiable as an integral part of the global Gebrüder Weiss network.

At TRANSLOG Connect in Budapest in November 2013, Gebrüder Weiss took the CEE Logistics and Supply Chain Excellence Award. The award was given by the Events Group and European Logistics Association for outstanding logistics and supply chain solutions. Gebrüder Weiss stood out in the Service Provider Category for the “Control Tower” concept developed for its customer Hilti, and recognised as a highly innovative approach to logistics and supply chain management.

In the summer of 2013, a new branch was opened in Györ offering the complete spectrum of Gebrüder Weiss services. The aim of opening this branch in Györ is to strengthen the company’s position in the region of Western Hungary – particularly in the automotive sector. The new GW branch at the Ipari Park in Györ has over 1,500 square metres of storage area, 1,000 pallet storage spaces and currently employs ten people.

The truck fleet of the former Diehl branches is being successively adapted to the GW design.

Gebrüder Weiss developed the “Control Tower” logistics system for its customer Hilti, and won an award for this at Translog Connect.

At the new location in Györ (Hungary), GW offers its complete range of services – from overland transport and air and sea freight to individual logistics solutions.

Nina Prochaska from Gebrüder Weiss parcel service (GWP) secured first place with her “Package Delivery 2.0” solution. Third place went to Mario Gräf from GWP for designing an innovative disposal system.

Land transports: Focus on multimodal transport In a Europe without borders, the smooth and efficient transport of goods is key to economic success. Companies from all sectors have a strong partner in Gebrüder Weiss land transport services. With full coverage across Europe in terms of general cargo solutions and extensive expertise when it comes to partial and full loads, Gebrüder Weiss guarantees that it will serve the European markets reliably and in an economically sustainable way – and in 2013 the Group always had its finger on the pulse. Gebrüder Weiss land transport processed a total of 10,190,000 consignments last year. Multimodal transport solutions are becoming increasingly important. Gebrüder Weiss has been setting trends in sustainability and efficiency for five years thanks to the Orange Combi Cargo (OCC), the exclusive block train between Vienna, Hall in Tyrol and Bludenz. Walter Konzett, Head of Product Management for land transport, looks back at this success story: “We were able to shift more than 100,000 truck loads from road to rail, saving over 52,000 tonnes of CO 2”. In 2013, Gebrüder Weiss expanded its OCC activities even further. Since September, REWE supermarkets in Tyrol and Vorarlberg have been supplied by OCC from the REWE central warehouse in Upper Austria. The name of the game is “operational excellence” and with this in mind, 950 vehicles have been fitted with a

state-of-the-art telematics system for route optimisation and a real-time track & trace system. In Austria, in 2013, Gebrüder Weiss land transport implemented pro.line home, the new B2C solution. To date, 120,000 consignments, including value-added services, such as unpacking and set-up, have been processed. Once more, numerous measures with regards to safety have been implemented. The orange land transport experts are continuously developing state-of-the-art distribution solutions. Aside from 24/7 monitoring and a permanent track & trace service on all main routes and direct services, land transport also offer active, running status updates along with alarms in case of deviations, secure parking on Gebrüder Weiss sites and escorts for particularly valuable freight. As a founder member of System Alliance Europe (SAE), Gebrüder Weiss sees itself as bridge builder between is partner companies located across 14 countries. 3.5 million consignments with a total weight of 1.6 million tonnes were moved in 2013 – an increase of almost five per cent.

Logistics: Internationalisation of European standards Efficient and flexible logistics is indispensable in modern business. Since 2013, Gebrüder Weiss expertise has also helped companies in the Caucasus to continue lowering fixed costs. Since July 2013, the logistics experts at Gebrüder Weiss have been running a modern logistics centre in Tbilisi, Georgia to the highest western European quality standards. Gebrüder Weiss online wireless order picking has opened up new horizons for Georgia’s leading innovative companies across all sectors – highly efficient and completely paper-free. In logistics, quick processing allows for flexibility in terms of warehouse capacity and web-based IT systems ensure the highest possible levels of transparency. Tried and tested process standards in storage logistics with specialised process managers in every location guarantee the quality that people have come to expect from the Gebrüder Weiss logistics division. “Efficient process planning, simulations and ongoing optimisation throughout the logis-

tics chain allow us to offer our customers real and, more importantly, sustainable added value,” says Harald Stiastny, Head of Corporate Logistics at Gebrüder Weiss. Last year, the expansion of the orange logistics portfolio was also apparent from the number of employees. In 2013, the number of employees in logistics increased by 19 per cent compared to the previous year. In 2014, Stiastny and his team are turning their sights even further east. Automotive logistics is central in China where the Gebrüder Weiss logistics experts are developing multi-user warehouse services to European process standards. “The ongoing development of our offer into full supply chain solutions is our core strategy for 2014,” says Stiastny.

Air & Sea: Safely on the move on all continents Gebrüder Weiss air and sea freight services ship sea freight worldwide and are reliable partners at global air freight hubs. The experience of Gebrüder Weiss Air & Sea experts stands them in good stead, particularly when markets are volatile. “Although the market for imports to Europe was challenging, we were able to stabilise at a high level in 2013,” says Joe Lässer, Director of Air & Sea. This is also due to ongoing investment in the Gebrüder Weiss infrastructure. In 2013, the Wolfurt air freight terminal saw the entry into operation of an ultra-modern screening facility, which complies with the highest security standards. The newly established Procurement Department in the sea freight division has been concentrating on rate agreements with ship owners and is able to react quickly and flexibly to changes. “Strong agreements have enabled us to continue to weather the volatility,” says Vojislav Jevtic, Global Product Manager Sea Freight. In 2013, the focus was also on investment in Asia. For

this reason, a sea freight product management office was set up in Shanghai to implement group strategies in the region. In order to meet the high demand for less-than-container shipments, Jevtic and his team launched the groupage freight product, “GWconsolution”. In this context, new gateways opened up in Hamburg and Koper. Projects & Break Bulk, the department that deals with special transports, saw a 40 per cent increase in turnover in 2013. On top of this, the global network of Gebrüder Weiss and Röhlig has been restructured. The legal structure, which has developed and grown over the past 15 years, was simplified by dispensing with most of the joint ventures. At the same time, steps were taken to ensure an even stronger alignment of shared operations processes with customer requirements.

The sea freight division is planning on sharpening the GWconsolution product profile and expanding geographically, for instance towards Singapore, in 2014. “We want to increase our productivity by relying on individual IT solutions for our customers,” says Jevtic.

DPD: Getting there faster The Gebrüder Weiss parcel service (GWP) has performed impressively this year with its first-rate customer service and a new B2C strategy. DPD, the parcel delivery service founded and operated by Gebrüder Weiss, Lagermax and Schachinger, offers a complete 24-hour service for parcels up to 31.5 kg throughout Austria. In 2013, its 25th year operating in this country, DPD moved more than 150,000 parcels on a daily basis. In 1988, when DPD came into the market, this number stood at 2,700. Quite the opposite: in 2014, Winkelmayer and his team want to start applying themselves more and more to DPD’s B2C strategy. “We want to get new customers on board with our service, and to deepen and further develop the existing shop structure.”

As of 2013, every DPD depot had at least one environmentally friendly, sustainable gas-powered vehicle. Andreas Winkelmayer, Head of the Gebrüder Weiss parcel service (GWP), explains that in 2013, DPD invested further in its service: “New, more flexible hardware and software solutions for parcel sorting and new technology at the main hub in Hörsching near Linz help us get valuable freight to where it needs to be even faster and more efficiently.” Since FlexDelivery was launched in June 2013, recipients have been able to choose for themselves what day they want their parcel delivering and opt for a specific time-slot for the delivery. People have been talking about DPD’s high-end quality for a long time. In 2013, Gebrüder Weiss RailCargo was once again a driving force in environmentally friendly and sustainable goods transport by rail. Managing Director Walter Dolezal’s team was able to increase the amount of goods transported by more than 10 per cent last year. As a result, the turnover of this rail transport organisation – an autonomous subsidiary since 1993 – increased by 14 per cent. Aside from transporting kerosene from the Slovenian port of Koper to Vienna-Schwechat and Munich airports, Gebrüder Weiss RailCargo currently operates more than 400 different routes. In 2013, the services to and from Slovenia have been performing particularly impressively. “Long-term partnerships with national railways, along with cooperation with private rail transport service providers, allow us to offer our customers the highest security possible at the same time as providing outstanding flexibility,” Dolezal explains. In 2014, together with his staff, he aims to continue responding quickly to changes in the market. “That way, we can always deliver the optimum solutions to our customers for their rail transport requirements.”

The technology sector relies on tectraxx’s special solutions. Bernd Breugem, Head of the tectraxx Business Unit, looks back at a successful 2013. More than 110,000 consignments with on-site services were processed by tectraxx in the fields of home delivery and technical distribution. tectraxx now delivers large digital printers for an international provider of IT equipment. “We were able to offer our customer a true all-round package thanks to our TENESO network. We do not simply deliver the equipment to end-customers across Europe; we actually take it, pre-installed, to the exact place that it needs to be.” In order to exploit synergies, tectraxx and Gebrüder Weiss have analysed home delivery transport flows and bundled together even more deliveries. Breugem says that, thanks to tectraxx, technology companies will again be able to focus all their attention on their core competencies in 2014. “We want to continue to develop our technical distribution portfolio.”

Every year, GW Rail Cargo Ges.m.b.H. – an autonomous subsidiary of Gebrüder Weiss since 1993 – transports almost a million tonnes of freight throughout Austria and the whole of Europe by an environmentally friendly, low-carbon method.

tectraxx offers specialist solutions for the sensitive and logistically complex high-tech sector. This allows technology companies to focus on their core competencies while the experts from tectraxx combine their technical know-how and project management experience to create efficient solutions.

dicall – the specialist in tailor-made communication services. At dicall, the focus in 2013 was squarely on service excellence – from sales preparation and advice to order and complaints logging and employee training. The Gebrüder Weiss subsidiary offers its customers flexible and personalised all-round telephone communication packages: “In 2013, because we were also able to offer services like shipping and data capture, the trend was clearly moving towards offering complete solutions,” says Managing Director Florian Maurer. More than one million calls were taken at the in-house call centre. In 2013, Maurer and his team launched the ‘dicall certified’ quality seal. “We analyse the quality of our customers’ communications and then carry out personalised training sessions on theory and practice.” Last year, dicall, which opened another office in Maria Saal, took over the premium service agendas for French cosmetics company L’Oreal. In 2014, this segment will be developed with as much ambition as the complete solution sector and market research.

x|vise offers comprehensive consulting for individual logistics solutions. In 2013, x|vise successfully undertook 48 different projects – from initial consultation on warehouse planning to installing the appropriate software. A special focus was put on e-commerce. “Things have turned out well for us in this first year of business and we have made a good start,” says Managing Director Harry Stiastny. The company has developed a B2B shop for British car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover and designed a B2C web shop for office services provider S.M.S. Ruf in Vorarlberg. x|vise made wood-based product manufacturer Egger fit for the future with the aid of a smart logistics facility in Hexham England. In 2014, Stiastny and his team will be focusing on further training for their customers. The x|vise experts train employees at Knapp, a logistics company based in Styria, Austria, by using real examples of projects and customer pitches relating to supply chain management. “By directly and actively applying what has been learned it can be implemented instantaneously in daily business life,” says Stiastny.

Since 2002, dicall, the specialist call centre for the logistics sector, has played an essential role in the area of communications in terms of reliability, customer orientation and professionalism.

The experts at x|vise provide companies with intelligent consulting for logistics systems of a more demanding kind – from an initial consultation to logistics management support. The core business is planning storage facilities and installing the appropriate logistics software.

Intelligent software solutions The global Transport Management Systems (TMS) from inet-logistics are very popular. The Gebrüder Weiss subsidiary founded in 1999 recorded a 10 per cent growth in turnover in 2013. Last year, CEO Oswald Werle and his employees focused primarily on the automotive industry. The Dornbirn-based company succeeded in winning a prestigious new customer: Volvo Cars. The automotive division of the traditional car manufacturer, originally Swedish, but now in Chinese ownership, has been using the inet TMS as its central software solution for automating strategic, operational and administrative tasks since May 2013. “In eight short months we have implemented a complete, multimodal Transport Management System,” says Werle. In 2014, inet Asia will jump into view as well – with its sights set on China. “Economic and ecological sustainability is an intrinsic part of inet systems. Our software solutions mean that our customers can reduce transport costs by up to 20 per cent,” says Werle.

inet-logistics is a leading provider of Transport Management Systems (TMS). The inet TMS allows all participating supply chain partners to interconnect on a standard platform via the Internet, thus ensuring role-specific interaction without any media disruption or redundancy.

More than transport Sustainable logistics companies create added value by offering efficient goods handling – all part of the service for their customers. From parcels for end-customers to heavy loads for industry: customised solutions from Gebrüder Weiss and the company’s constant striving for optimisation really make an impression on customers. Every consignment is handled with the aim of finding the best possible method of transport. After all, in a highly digitised world based on the division of labour, transporting goods involves far more than simply shipping the cargo from A to B, from the consignor to the consignee. Modern logistics companies create added value for their customers by offering efficient goods handling and mobile data capture. Time is money – and transporting goods as efficiently as possible is every customer’s prime concern. At the same time, the absolute safety of the cargo must be guaranteed and the route that the goods follow must be completely traceable. With GW pro.line, Gebrüder Weiss has developed a unified Europe-wide system for general cargo shipments. The aim is to make the most of every truck’s cargo space. The customer can also avoid unnecessary waiting times thanks to precisely defined delivery times because the goods are bundled together for shipment and transported – and delivered – at specific times. So how does this work exactly? Haulage trucks collect the general cargo from the sender and take it to

the nearest GW hub. Here, the goods are loaded, as required, onto larger main-leg trucks, which operate a daily scheduled shuttle service between the individual GW locations across the whole of Europe. The cargo is then taken by smaller trucks to the right destination at guaranteed delivery times. Thanks to digital data capture, the shipping process can be tracked by the customer every step of the way. In the transfer and control of logistically relevant data, Gebrüder Weiss bets on state-of-the-art technologies – from a global Transport Management System (TMS), Track & Trace and Control Tower solutions to intelligent functional units for vehicles (on-board units). Each transport is made transparent for consignor and consignee alike, irrespective of whether the main transport line only runs from Basel to Stuttgart or from Passau to Tbilisi. The advantages of groupage transport over the more costly individual transport are plain to see. The customer saves time and money. Planning security is increased, resources are saved and the environment stays protected. Customised transports by sea. With GWconsolution, Gebrüder Weiss brings the benefits of groupage freight to the sea freight sector as well. With own LCL gateways at the most significant ports worldwide, the coordination and consolidation of shipments is realised in accordance with uniform service criteria.

To find the best transport solution, Gebrüder Weiss takes advantage of its 150 locations worldwide, its fleet of 3,500 trucks and 1,179 regular routes throughout Europe. With 56 partners in 29 countries, the transport company is able to build upon a strong network of leading groupage freight forwarders. Needless to say, as an innovative freight forwarder, GW doesn’t limit itself to just the transport business. Customers have good reasons for increasingly choosing to incorporate GW’s logistics expertise into their production processes. Operational logistics for the automotive industry. A smart division of labour is in everyone’s interests. The cooperation with automotive supplier Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems (BMTS) in St. Michael ob Bleiburg in Carinthia, Austria is a good example of an in-house logistics model developed by GW. Since 2011, 32 GW employees have been responsible for the whole logistics process from goods inwards to warehouse management and dispatch. The advantage: because of this partnership, BMTS is able to focus all of its energy on its core business as an automotive supplier – leaving the in-plant logistics to the experts, its partners at GW.

At Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems, Gebrüder Weiss provides the materials for production and modifies the storage logistics accordingly. This allows the customer to concentrate entirely on the production process.

Effective communication is the key to success within any team. Above all else, it is an efficient IT structure, specifically attuned to the internal processes, that creates added value for the customer in the case of the BMTS logistics developed by GW. The path of each workpiece needs be 100 per cent traceable. Whether using a barcode system for seamless shipment tracking, Track & Trace, EDI (electronic data interchange) or online shipment processing, the latest IT technology not only optimises monitoring and data tracking, but also increases transparency for the customer.

When it comes to serving its customers, GW knows no bounds. It might not want to be the biggest transport and logistics company in the world, but it certainly wants to be the best. Technology and challenges are constantly changing in the field of logistics. GW’s ambition nonetheless remains the same: to surpass customer requirements, set new benchmarks in the quality of our service and create value. This is and always has been the Gebrßder Weiss credo.

The highest possible flexibility, personal advice and open communication with customers have always set GebrĂźder Weiss apart. Even when GW became a globally active concern following the development of its worldwide network, the traditional company still remained true to its roots and its values.

Corporate Social Responsibility

We think in terms of generations – Gebrüder Weiss can look back on a history of more than 500 years. A legacy committed to vision, tradition and innovation. As an independent family business, Gebrüder Weiss aims to act consistently and in tune with its responsibilities and budget. For Gebrüder Weiss, “Corporate Social Responsibility” (CSR) is deeply embedded in corporate culture and does not just apply to individual departments or employees. We see CSR as being an overarching and responsible corporate governance system that applies to every country in which Gebrüder Weiss is active. In line with this, we enable each branch of Gebrüder Weiss to invest a certain percentage of its turnover in social projects. In addition to the responsibility that we, as a company, take for our employees, the environment and society, we also allow our employees the scope to put their own slant on this. A cause close to our heart is the support for people in our region, who

are living in a difficult environment or suffering hardships. For nine years now, Gebrüder Weiss has been working for the children in the Belarusian village of Chatovna near Chernobyl, organising various fundraising campaigns and arranging for the children to take a holiday in Vorarlberg, Austria. Another project that Gebrüder Weiss has been supporting for many years is DEBRA Austria and their “Butterfly Children”. Alongside centrally managed aid projects and partnerships, many of our branches work to help with social projects: GW Salzburg is in partnership with the Child Protection Centre in Salzburg, supporting emergency aid for children and young people suffering abuse. As a partner of the children’s hospice in Plamienok, GW Slovakia helps sick children and children who have suffered personal loss in their families. GW also works all year round, organising a range of cost-free transports: whether this is delivering mattresses to Romania or transporting aid packages at Christmas.

Every year since 2009, Gebrüder Weiss has published a GRI-certified Sustainability Report. You can view the 2013 edition here.

These donations, sponsorships and voluntary work are an inherent part of the charitable activities that take place in the orange world. We aim to ensure that our resources are used to promote sustainable, positive development in our environment and to support our employees in their social engagement.

As a transport and logistics company, we operate in a challenging environment. Goods must be transported between the sender and recipient according to the customer’s demands and arrive in top condition. There are also many different standards that must be met. Conducting business internationally means contending with a complex set of rules based on legal requirements, cultural considerations and language differences. “Compliance” – acting properly and ethically – is, therefore, an essential but not self-evident factor in our international sector. Here at Gebrüder Weiss, we are aware of our social, ecological and economic responsibilities. Offering services in over 100 countries around the globe, we promise to adhere to rules, regulations and underlying conditions in both national and international business activities. Our commitment to compliance is set out in our Code of Conduct, which is based on our core values of

Information and transparency are key requirements for continued social and corporate development. On the basis of this conviction, Gebrüder Weiss engages in proactive corporate communication with its most important stakeholder groups – especially customers, partners, suppliers, employees and owners – next to classical communication in the operative business. We do not follow a one-voice policy. We want independent employees who continue to adhere to the objectives and policies of their company, even after clocking off. We always communicate the background to our decisions – the why. This safeguards the long-term motivation of our employees as well as the excellent image of our company. We maintain personal two-way communication with our customers. This primarily occurs within the framework of our customer care concept, through sales representatives both in the office and in the field. This dialogue is supplemented by regular market research, particularly customer satisfaction surveys. One large-scale, representative customer survey found that 96 per cent of our customers would recommend us. Through over 60 channels, Corporate Marketing and Communications (MACOM) provides employees, partners, customers and other stakeholders with information about current events related to the company. The information on the various channels is tailored to specific target groups and coordinated by a total of 18 employees in

the department. The information flow with stakeholders is seen as an ongoing, interactive communication process. For internal communication, Gebrüder Weiss primarily uses the Intranet which is updated on a daily basis. We supply additional information and background details in our regular employee newsletter which we issue in both German and English. The core of our external communication is based on regional and transregional press releases covering all topics related to the company. Since 2009, Gebrüder Weiss has published its Sustainability Report in compliance with the GRI standard. In 2014, we will be releasing our Sustainability Report online for the first time. In some regions and countries, customer newsletters with information of local interest are issued regularly. In 2013, printed versions in five countries were converted into an electronic format. This allows us to distribute our information more quickly and ecologically.
