The
Showing our colors.
A company probably makes the most important impression on its surroundings by its appearance, its behavior and its language. The appearance is the first impression, which is important for visualization. The company’s behavior and language will then complete the overall impression. This overall impression is critical to our presence and our communication in the market.
The following guidelines will help you incorporate the basic graphic elements, which form a very important part of the Gebrüder Weiss corporate image, deliberately and correctly in your work.
The Orange Book sets design standards that have to be followed. It is the only way Gebrüder Weiss, as a company, is able to communicate with customers and markets in a uniform way. However, it will not be able to answer all questions that may arise when you work with it, e.g. when you design folders and advertising material.
The Gebrüder Weiss Marketing Services & Communications department is also concerned with the company’s appearance on an on-going basis. The staff of this department will be happy to help you with any questions that might arise with regard to implementation of the Orange Book quickly and reliably.
Only through the commitment of all Gebrüder Weiss employees – that is every single one of you – our company profile can develop to become the distinctive identity that is clearly perceived by the market as Gebrüder Weiss.

1.1 The word-image logo
The word-image logo must be composed of the following three elements: the white emblem, white lettering and the surrounding orange plane. The fourth element, mention of the Transport and Logistics business areas, may be omitted in exceptional cases.
Notes on proper use of the word-image logo
• For the word-image logo, white letters on an orange background are to be used at all times.
• Using the word-image logo on an orange plane is possible if the logo plane is surrounded by a thin line.
• Neither the orange plane nor the word-image logo may be reduced in size or deformed.
• Within this area, the elements are arranged on the plane in proportion to each other and aligned both on the left side and on the right side.
• The plane must be kept in full tone color (orange), in black or in greyscale values only. No color shading or gradients may be used! Other colors are expressly prohibited for the word-image logo.
Note: For some country organizations, other language versions are available. Such logos may be requested from MAKOM.

Gebrüder Weiss is the “orange” freight forwarder. Colors are a strong distinctive feature, and we want to firmly establish a connection between Gebrüder Weiss and the color orange in the recipient. Therefore, please use our corporate color as often as possible in order to make this graphic element gain importance.
Orange, GW’s corporate color
In colored prints, the word-image logo may only be used in full tone orange. In black-and-white prints, the logo can be kept in full tone black or in greyscale values.
• Offset printing The color orange is printed in the special color Pantone 021C. If this is not possible, it must be printed according to the four-color scale – especially in newspaper printing – as defined on the left.
• Digital, ink-jet or color-laser prints If the color orange cannot be printed as a spot color, four-color printing may be used as a stop-gap solution. In this case, the color orange is not converted according to the Pantone scale (!) , but defined depending on the paper used with a ratio of 55% (newspaper or uncoated) or 60% (coated) Magenta (M) to 100% Yellow (Y).
• Foils and outdoor advertising ScotchCal 100-14, MacCal 9801-04 paintwork or silk-screen prints: RAL 2004

Dark blue as secondary color
The complementary color dark blue is to be preferred for combinations. In two-color prints it can be used instead of black. It can also be used on large surfaces, as it provides optimum support for the orange color. Blue may be converted to the four-color process. Please apply the Euroscale tonal values, and do not convert this color according to the Pantone scale (!)
Tertiary colors
Tertiary colors that combine well Subdued colors from all spectrums may be combined with our orange color. If you need extremely bright colors for your theme, try to reach the desired effect by using even more orange.

1.3 Gebrüder Weiss – typography
The following shows some of the most preferred variations of Helvetica Neue Pro:
Helvetica Neue Pro Roman
Helvetica Neue Pro Italic
Helvetica Neue Pro Bold
Helvetica Neue Pro Bold Oblique
As a special display typeface, e.g. for special headlines and teaser text, we use:
Helvetica Neue Pro Extended
Helvetica Neue Pro Extended Oblique
Helvetica Neue Pro Bold Extended
Helvetica Neue Pro Bold Extended Oblique
Choice of fonts
Our corporate font
Our corporate font Gebrüder Weiss’ standard font is Helvetica Neue Pro, mainly used in the type styles Roman and Bold. For headlines, the Helvetica Neue Pro Bold Extended font is recommended. The selected font should be applied with condensed character spacing to create our own, distinct typography.
The font is an essential part of the company’s representation. Legibility and clarity have top priority in any written text concerning Gebrüder Weiss.
Tip: Don’t use too many different type styles in one document.
Alternative fonts: If the Helvetica Neue Pro font is not pre-installed on a computer, the Arial or Verdana fonts, for instance, may be used instead. This is a must for online publications, as the recipients’ computers are not equipped with Helvetica Neue Pro, either.

Far behind, behind the word mountains, far from the lands of vocabulary and consonants live the blind texts. Secluded, they live in Buchstabhausen on the coast of semantics, a large language ocean.
Centered and right-aligned text have a negative effect on readability.
Composition
Here are some simple instructions for the successful design of documents:
Left-aligned, right-aligned, centered or justified text?
• Left-aligned text guarantees best readability with long texts as it is the easiest and fastest way for your eyes to follow such a text.
• Justified text employs a very calm, typographic form and is especially suitable for text-intensive information (newspapers, magazines, customer information ...)
• Centered and right-aligned text causes the eye to get “lost” when jumping to the next line and this typeface is therefore not suitable for long texts.
Typography tips
If you want to set off or stress certain parts of your text typographically, you can use bold text or italics, the color orange or a different font size. Paragraphs in running text can easily be structured by indenting or by inserting an empty line. Note: Centering more than one line in your text produces a jarring effect and therefore is not recommended.
Please consider the following:
• Using only uppercase or lowercase characters considerably decreases readability. The human brain perceives words as whole geometrical structures, by comparing their form rather than comprehending their content by reading individual letters. Therefore, WORDS WRITTEN IN CAPITALS are more difficult to read.
• Underlining a word in online graphic language denotes it is being linked to other contents; using underlined words not containing any links may be confusing for the recipient.
• Textural effects such as or outlining create complex graphic structures for the eye, which may dramatically reduce the speed of perception.

2.1 The word-image logo on a plane as a primary design element
Left-aligned word-image logo
Whenever possible, the word-image logo should be placed in a corner in bleed format, reaching out into the format. Hence, there are two ways of arranging emblem and lettering: Left-aligned word-image logo and right-aligned wordimage logo.
• Logo text and emblem are always embedded in a plane that can be extended into the two dimensions opposite of the emblem, but, if this is the case, must go all the way to the edge of the page where the end of the format is intended to be.
• Ideally, the plane runs into one of the four corners.
For such planes, equal conditions apply as for the use of the entire word-image logo as described in 2.1. above. In exceptional cases (!), the word-image logo may also be inverted.
The “Gebrüder Weiss” lettering may only be used together with the emblem.
Right-aligned word-image logo
• The emblem must be placed in the corner that reaches out into the format. Select the correct word-image logo version, either left-aligned or right-aligned. For designs that have a context, the emblem may also be used on its own on a plane.

2.2 The logo as a design element
Cube
The GW cube is applied in areas where the brand name receives a high level of attention, e.g. on the main page of GW’s own publications, promotional material, GW mobile app, working gear, merchandising products etc.

2.3 The language of Gebrüder Weiss
The services provided by Gebrüder Weiss
The services provided by Gebrüder Weiss are varied and complex and, due to constant growth and innovations, are becoming more and more extensive. The customer, though, must be kept informed in a clear and transparent way. In customer care, our employees always endeavor to be matter-of-fact, committed, polite, competent, helpful and friendly. We want to express this attitude in all media related to our communication.
Attributes for your design: mobile, moving, reliable, industrial, digital, optimized, dynamic, solid and uncomplicated.
Dos
• Graphically, the attributes are expressed by means of geometry, strength, functionalism, clarity, dynamics and efficiency, but always in an appealing way.
• Always use clear and unmistakable design elements and colors.
• All elements used are meant to support and illustrate the message (and not to be ornamental).
• Your content should always be to the point. Always remain matter-of-fact and straightforward, whether it be in texts, pictures or graphics, but never forget the human touch: your work should be appealing to the customer. Moreover, a self-confident appearance makes us look strong and convincing in comparison to our competitors.
Don’ts
For the sake of completeness, please note that centered or right-aligned texts, color gradients (except when shading) and awkward formats should be avoided.
Coloring
Always try to get as much contrast as possible in relation to the background. For longer texts, use black characters on white or light backgrounds and white characters on orange or dark backgrounds.
In order to set off or stress texts, orange characters or typefaces in italics are also acceptable. In case of black-andwhite prints, use white or black backgrounds and correspondingly black or white lettering only.
Bullet characters
In lists, use dots (•) and indent the following line.
Lines
Lines may be used to underline, to connect or as a dynamic design element. You may use them as you wish, but they should always show the colors orange, blue, black or white. This element is preferably used horizontally and as a straight line; vertical lines are an option but are to be employed very sparingly. Curved or downward lines as well as rounded frames are to be avoided.
Planes
Planes are an important presentational element for Gebrüder Weiss. The plane is the graphic representation of “territory”. The Gebrüder Weiss Group sees itself as strong and competent within their field of action. Therefore, planes are always clearly defined, without any limiting frames, but always in clear colors, preferably in the Gebrüder Weiss orange and the Gebrüder Weiss blue. Please avoid rounded corners. Exceptions are single graphic elements such as GW mobile app icons.
15 The Orange Book – Design
2.4 Ratio of sizes
For this design, it is very important to use the emblem and lettering group in the proper ratio to the plane. In order to get the proportion just right, keep in mind that the background must support the presentation. The dimensions of the remaining orange plane must also be taken into consideration.
Note: In the Applications section, we will deal with proportions in greater detail.
16 The Orange Book – Design
2.5 Additional element “GW moves”
GW moves lettering
“GW moves”
Ideally, the lettering “GW moves” is placed across pictures or planes in a transparent manner as a design element. The words may be in bleed format if desired, but all letters must always be clearly visible/readable. The transparency level depends on the background. Please look at the following examples.
Note: For the country organizations, other language versions are available and can be requested from MAKOM.

2.6 Using images
Images and illustrations are an important source of information and attraction. When using photographs or illustrations for your Gebrüder Weiss design, please observe the following:
• The visual language can be oriented towards some of GW’s basic concepts:
– Movement: many of GW’s activities have to do with motion, which should be expressed in the images.
– Orange: the company color is expected to be dominant in images.
– Depth of field and motion blur
– People at work
• Clearly define your pictures, but don’t use frames and avoid rounded corners.

2.7 PowerPoint and Word designs
In PowerPoint you design presentations, in Word you generate documents for correspondence (such as letters, offers, drafts etc.). Please don’t use PowerPoint or Word for designing printed material (advertisements, folders, leaflets), letterings or web pages . For that purpose, you can download the templates already designed for you from our download section. Please do not change them in any way. For instance, the headers and images in the PowerPoint templates are all matched to set off the headline.
Don’t embellish your design too much! Fewer “design” elements mean that your information will be understood more clearly. Please note the sections on “Graphic and textual language” and “Typography tips” in this manual.
Color design
Use mainly orange and black. If this doesn’t suffice, only add muted colors, ideally halftones of orange and black.
Font
Only use the Arial font in the colors orange or black.

max. 7 bullet points per page and max. 7 words per line

Branch identification and address are not printed via offset printing, but printed automatically. As all letters are processed by ink-jet or laser printers anyway, branch identification and address (as in the example) are printed in the process as well. The address is printed by the author him/herself. To set off parts of the text and headings, use bold and/or larger font sizes. At 145 mm from the left margin, a second left tab stop is set for the placing of address, numbers, dates and sums. “Centered texts” are tabbed at 18 mm and aligned left.

Signs
For creating signs, please observe the local requirements. If necessary, you may also use the logo in its inverted form, but never forget that the color orange is an important identification mark.
A sign at the entrance shows the opening hours or contact options when the site is closed.
Pylons and banners next to the building help navigate through complex buildings. Pylons, in most cases, require permission, banners often don’t.
Site
Outdoor guiding systems and signs A guiding system consisting of pylons or signs helps visitors and carriers to find their way around our site.
Depending on the application and local conditions, the outdoor guiding system may consist of pylons, signposts or wall-mounted signs.
Building graphics
Choose an architectural feature of the building, for instance the administration area, and use it to create an orange background area. For planning your building graphics, please contact MAKOM in due time.
Wayfinding
A nameplate generator is available for office nameplates. http://tuerschilder.logistics-expert.com/nameplate/new
If you have any questions with regard to wayfinding and signage for new GW facilities, please contact MAKOM.
