Interviewed by Jennifer Diaby

Q&A Please introduce and tell us a little about yourself. Thank you for this opportunity. I was born and raised in South Carolina. I grew up in St. Matthews and Orangeburg. I’m a graduate of South Carolina State University with a Bachelor’s in Accounting and Masters in Accounting with a Tax concentration from Strayer University. I spent 10+ years in accounting and finance departments of Fortune 500 companies then decided to ”hang my own shingle” if you will. I currently live in West Columbia. I enjoy traveling with my Husband of 13 years as well as watching the NBA. You are the owner of D. Hart Accounting Practitioner LLC. What type of services you offer and where are you located? We offer Tax Resolution, Tax Preparation and Tax Planning Services. We’re located at 215 Medical Circle in West Columbia; right across from Lexington Medical hospital. What inspired you to become a business owner and how many years have you been established? While at South Carolina State University, I signed up to be a volunteer tax preparer with the IRS. This was back in the day when tax preparation was still done by hand. I fell in love with taxation. Fast forward graduating from SCSU, I landed a part time job at H&R Block where I prepared taxes during tax season, then taught tax during the Fall seasons. The love of Tax Prep and Accounting along with motivation of my clients at H&R Block inspired me to become a business owner. H&R Block was only opened during tax season. Every tax season when I reported to work, many of my clients would ask me questions about issues that came up the prior year. Some of the issues could have been resolved quicker if only addressed within that year rather than waiting 9 months to a year later. That sparked the idea in my head of providing year-round service. I’ve been established 17 years…actually a little over 20 years if I count the bookkeeping service I started out of my home. Tell the readers more about one of your services called the B.A.S.I.C.? Wow! I’m not sure where you even saw this! It’s kind of convoluted by stay with here. So one definition of the word “basic” is to have simple facts about something. Tax and Accounting subjects can be most complicated. A part of my job when getting people out of tax trouble, tax preparation or providing tax strategies is to explain the process as simple as possible. B.A.S.I.C is an acronym that serves as a reminder to always simplify the information I provide my clients…not talk in “taxese”. Since I couldn’t find an acronym using the word “simple” I stuck with B.A.S.I.C. to state the services we provide. Bookkeeping for Tax Preparation - Annual Tax Support Services - SOS Tax Problem Help (immediate relief from wage garnishment & bank levies) - Income Tax Services: Problem Resolution, Preparation & Planning - Consulting (Ask Me Anything Mondays, seminars/webinars) How do you assist your clients who have businesses to stay out of tax trouble? First, I assess to make sure clients aren’t currently in tax trouble. If they are, then we formulate a plan of action to permanently get them out of tax trouble. From there we analyze the business and its owner/owners financial pictures no less than quarterly (sometimes more often) and formulate tax strategies to help save money as well as avoid “tax surprises” during tax season. What type of tax resolution services you provide for your clients? I provide permanent solutions for tax problems, not just putting a band-aid on it. Resolution services can be any of the following: IRS and/or state tax account analysis (what the IRS has on you, is it correct and what should your next steps be), Relief or Protection from Wage Garnishments, Bank Levies, Asset Seizures, Liens, Properly structured installment agreements (what you can afford, not what the IRS wants you to pay), Back tax filings, Settling debt for less than owed, Innocent Spouse relief, Penalty Abatement, Payroll Tax , Account monitoring, Audit assistance, IRS letter consultations. These are the more common services but there are other resolution options as well. Give our readers some important tips on tax strategies to minimize or eliminate their income tax bill? The best tip I can give to the individual or the business owner to minimize their income tax bill is make sure to have a PLAN. It doesn’t matter how good your tax coach, accountant, or tax preparer is entering a stack of paperwork on April 15. If you haven’t planned right, it’s too late for any strategy.

Business owners need to make sure their business is organized right (i.e. sole proprietorship, single member LLC, partnership, S-Corp or C-Corp) to maximize legitimate deductions, credits, loopholes, based on their total financial situation. Individuals need to earn as much nontaxable income as possible, make the most of the new tax law’s adjustments, deductions, credits, and spend more pre-tax dollars versus after-tax dollars. Where can our readers view more information about your services? On my website at https://dhartaccounting.com/tax-services/. What advice would you give to future business owners/entrepreneurs in preparation before they get started in business? Being a serial entrepreneur, my advice is not going to be for the faint of heart. I would say if you’re preparing to start a business, just do it! Don’t procrastinate. It’s not going to be perfect. I have been in business two decades and I still don’t have it all figured out. What are some of the challenges that comes with being a business owner and how do you deal with it? My biggest challenge has always been finding good people be it employees or consultants/contractors. Looking good on paper and getting the job done are two different things. I’m better now at vetting with a few systems I’ve set into motion. It’s not foolproof, but it’s 100% better than relying on my own intuition. Another challenge I have making sure we take on the right clients. I’ve learned this the hard way. I want to serve EVERYONE, but it’s impossible. We interview every prospect and set clear expectations before taking them on as a client. Again, we don’t always get it right, but it’s not from lack of effort. What do you think makes a business owner to become successful within their industry? Persistence and focus! You don’t have to be the smartest, you just have to stay the course and work on your craft often. How do you balance your home and work life? Hahahaha…I wouldn’t call my home/work lives balanced. I have three rooms in my house that are clean during tax season (the two bathrooms and the kitchen). Clothes will get washed several times a week but folding and hanging don’t happen until the weekends…maybe. I have a very supportive husband that is our home chef, HelloFresh, BlueApron, DoorDash, and GrubHub all wrapped in one; the computer room that we are supposed to share is MY second office, I can only travel with him out of the state ONCE during tax season. So that’s my reality. For sanity (not balance) I try to attend nonbusiness functions throughout the tax season to catch my breath. Please share with our readers your upcoming speaking engagements, conferences, or events. Well thanks to COVID-19 all of my public March and April speaking engagements have been postponed. I will update my Facebook page nearing the time of my other events. Every Monday I host a tax chat called “Ask Me Anything”. Anyone can privately ask me a question related to their tax situation and I give them an on the spot answer. I have some upcoming webinars for small business owners that will posted on my social media sites soon. I also have a new podcast, Tax Problems Solved! https://anchor.fm/tax-problems-solved. People can send me messages that may end up on a future podcast. It can be heard on Google Podcast, Spotify, Breaker, and some more well-known outlets. Give us some words to educate, inspire, and encourage all of our readers of Growth Women's Business Networks Magazine. Never measure your success by others success. Everyone has a different measuring stick…(I have to tell myself this constantly).

Minister Nadia Segar Interviewed by Jennifer Diaby Q&A Please introduce and tell us a little about yourself. I am a girl that fell in love with the right man several years ago. Since then I have allowed him to have my life for better or for worse in sickness and in health. I have been tempted so many times, but I have kept only unto him and I will continue to do that as long as he allows breath to flow from this loaned body. I am far from perfect, so he continues to bathe me as I surrender my imperfections to him. You have a phenomenal ministry that is so inspirational. Please tell the readers about your outreach ministry W.I.L.D.F.L.O.W.E.R.S.? WILDFLOWERS is an acronym for Women Influencing Lives Daily through the Fathers Love Operating With Excellence to Reach Souls. Initially we began as a book club reading Biblically based books. Today that continues, however we have taken our learning step further by reaching into the community to have study’s and conversation with other women. We support our troops with care packages and provide gift baskets during the holidays. What I found interesting is that W.I.L.D.F.L.O.W.E.R.S. is not only a outreach ministry, but a book club? How did your outreach ministry turn into a book club? Actually, our book club became more of an outreach ministry. As we met, we began to realize that others needed to be built and encouraged, so it became our desire to reach others by connecting with them where they are in life. Some have a relationship with God, others don’t. Regardless of their relationship our desire is to move them from places of destruction to victory which is our churches mission. What is the mission and purpose of your book club and outreach ministry? Our meetings are a way for God to invite us to read books that we otherwise might not, and to allow Him through the Holy Spirit to cultivate and enhance our Spiritual growth by discussing various narratives and themes as we reflect upon the scriptures. Our discussions are rather organic, because we want to hear how the reading intersects with the individual’s experiences, memories, everyday life and current events. Not only that, to see each other blossom and grow in God’s grace and favor. And let me say my biggest priority is confidence. We have established “rules of engagement” and the ladies will tell you I am very passionate about maintaining confidences. We will NOT have breach of trust amongst ourselves nor against the Kingdom of God. Where can our readers follow your ministry on social media? Right now, we are listed on Facebook as WILDFLOWERSOFGOD. Tell our readers about Mercy Covering, LLC. Where is it located and how long has it been in operation? Mercy Covering is a 2-year-old gift from God given during a low time in my life. It is an online store containing hand crafted feather broaches. Devastated from grief and years of sexual abuse, I turned pain into passion by sharing the Coverings as gifts to friends and family. Inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit, I was led to spread the message of each Covering. Just as we are uniquely formed by the hands of God, each Covering is handmade and no two are identical….but neither are we. Covering designs: The feathers remind us of the lively Cherubim Angels mounted on the Ark of the Covenant covering God’s Mercy Seat. The blood of Christ is represented by the red circle. The logo branded into the red circle reminds us of Christ’s scared body. The Gold fastener reminds us that we are all being purified and refined through tribulation. The 12 Tribe Coverings are named in memory of two quarreling sisters Leah (Zilpah-maid) and Rachel (Bilhah-maid). See (Genesis 29:31 thru 30:22 and 35:16-18) and their prayers to God.

What is the main purpose Mercy Covering, LLC was created? We believe that many women unconsciously wrestle with identity crisis failing to recognize they are truly a Masterpiece, COVERED by the blood of Christ. Never should we be “for sale” mentally, physically, or spiritually. It is our honor to encourage them to start right where they are by harnessing the power and authority they possess because they are COVERED. I absolutely love how you work to encourage women to join together. Why do you think it is important for women to encourage and uplift one another? I believe it is important to encourage and uplift one another because it’s outlined in the Word of God, I believe it’s in Philippians 2:3. When we encourage, it’s in that moment we experience his Kingdom coming and his will being done in our lives. Women are so powerful not because we are encouraged by other women, but because God has given us authority and power to crush the adversaries head and destroy every Goliath that attempts to infiltrate our Peace. Peace means to be “whole”, “complete”, so that will never come from an added eyelash, the whip of our hair, nor in the span of our hips. Those things leave you wanting more, but when God washes of the Soul, girl you’re less likely to embrace that splintered feeling. What is your greatest accomplishment in ministry? My greatest accomplishment in ministry was obtaining my ministry license and forming WILDFLOWERS. How important is a positive leadership role in ministry? Positive leadership is important for ministry. But let me be clear, I do not agree with being positive at the expense of diluting the Word of God simply to please the masses. The moment the Word comes with reproach, some people attempt to spin it as negative…..no, it’s the Word and it is written to convict not to condemn. If you are convicted, it may be the result of God attempting to cultivate you and draw you closer to him. You are a woman of many hats with your career of over 20 years, being a Board Member, Business Owner, and ministry leader. How do you find balance between your personal life, career, and ministry? I can’t say that I have mastered balance. Ministry is demanding and I will tell anyone the key to balance is learning to be sensitive to the voice of God as well as knowing when to simply say “no”. My family is my priority and let me tell you my husband keeps me on track. He is notorious for helping me course-correct. I also have a planner which is a MUST now that I am back in school perusing another Master Degree. I know you are a licensed minister as well as your husband. What is the key to having Godly marriage? The key to a Godly marriage is forgiveness. Recently, I read an article about Gottman’s 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse”. It was dynamic in that it outlined Criticism, Defensiveness, Stone Walling, and Contempt as the 4 behaviors that can destroy a relationship. Of these I believe contempt is the worse because it holds the marriage hostage. My husband and I have differences in approaches and styles of learning, so we bring a different perspective to the table when it’s time to discuss various passages of scripture. We also agree that intimacy, passion, and commitment is required for a successful marriage. And let me be clear, these components are the same in our “marriage” to Christ. God desires for us to spend time with him, becoming onewith the word, THAT’S the intimacy. Next, he wants us to desire him, THAT’S the passion. Finally, he wants us to be persuaded and no matter what happens, we will remain committed because he is God in spite of the things that happen. When I start bugging-out, Ralph takes me to God. When Ralph starts tripping, I take him to God. I know family is of great importance to you. What advice would you give the readers on how to build a strong family relationship? I often tell the ladies that I don’t do masks and I won’t do lies. Most of us are broken in some way and if you aren’t pause and give God praise! I was taught that God created family male and female to represent his interest in this earth. They represent his interest as they disciple their children teaching them the values and principles outlined in the Word. It’s very important to have fun as a family because so many believe that serving God is no “fun”. That could be the furthest from the truth. What I really think they mean is they don’t want the accountability that comes with serving God, when really there are so many worldly things he removes from your palette. Anyway, communication and forgiveness are essential to building a strong family relationship. Please share any of conferences, events, workshops with the readers. We will have Author Annie Sally speaking October 17 to discuss Singleness and Marriage, information about that event is forthcoming. Then every Saturday in May we will be in Blackville, SC to discuss “Lord teach me to Pray” by Kay Aurthr. In November we will have our 3 rd Annual Thanksgiving baskets and wrap up the year with our annual WILDFLOWERS Brunch. Please search Facebook for the host of events that are going on with our church International Praise and The Hive Community Circle. We really need you to be a part of making a difference. If you ever decide to pay our church a visit, please do not hesitate to ask for me. I would absolutely be honored that you decided to allow me to share space with you. Give us some words to educate, inspire, and encourage women and all of our readers of Growth Women’s Business Networks Magazine. You must decide. Those around you can equip you with the tools, whatever they may be, but if you never decide, you never will. So, move forward by living a persuaded life. The people are waiting for you.

EDUCATOR SPOTLIGHT Interviewed by Jennifer Diaby

Dr. Demestress Williams Please introduce and tell our readers a little about yourself. Hello Everyone: I am Dr. Dee. I was born and raised in the small town of Norway, SC (Orangeburg County). I am an only child, raised by my paternal grandparents. I love traveling, singing, shopping, learning new things and meeting new people. I am a wife and a mother to an adorable little fur kid, Jordan, our Yorkie-poodle. Dr. Dee, I know you are a highly qualified South Carolina Educator & Administrator along with being a National Certified Teacher. How many years have you worked as an Educator and what inspired you to work in the area of education? Hi Jennifer, thank you for having me. I have been an educator for 18 years. What inspired me to work in the area of education is a bit of a journey. My grandmother was an educator. I had several cousins who were educators when I was young; and I discovered really early that I enjoyed learning as well as teaching others. Therefore, when I enrolled into college, I decided to major in ...Speech Pathology...Not Education! Lol! By the time I was a teenager, I had experienced a lot of trauma in my life and decided there was NO WAY I was going to teach in a room full of kids. Instead, I would help children develop or recapture their normal speech patterns after suffering from impediments due to trauma through birth or while very young. After two years, an internship, and the fact that I was too emotional to work with children who had such severe needs; I decided to change my major to Professional English/Journalism with a minor in Religious History and Spanish. Clearly, I had it all figured out...until the tragic event of September11, 2001, as I prepared for graduation the following semester...all major journalism jobs were gridlock and I wasn’t trying to relocate & work for pennies at the time, just to get a foot in the door. --So I decided to….TEACH. I went through the PACE program in SC for Alternative Educator Certification...I have never looked back---purpose had begun. You are a woman of many titles as an Author, Educator, Editor, Faith Leader, Trained Public Speaker, and a Young Adult Mentor. What would you say is your greatest accomplishment? My greatest accomplishment interestingly has nothing to do with my titles. It was ability to overcome low self-esteem, feeling inadequate as a woman, and simply deciding to live as the authentic version of myself and tell my story, tell my truth, but most importantly deciding to accept the truth that God says about me and deciding to use my voice to empower other people to do the same; especially my college students. Those are my greatest accomplishments to date. Dr. Dee, tell the readers about the Culture-Focused Teaching method, in which you are the pioneer creator. Culture-Focused Teaching (CFT) Method is a simple system that I created through research and application. It reveals a cultural approach to creating classroom management plans that work. Culture in the sense of “how we do things.” Educators are enamored with so many responsibilities as it relates to educating our children. Managing a class is one of those roles that tends to be one of the greatest areas of concern for teachers, administrators and school districts at large. The CFT approach provides practical, research-based strategies that can assist teachers with building a classroom culture that works for every child in their class, no matter how challenging. CFT is a book, but more than that, its a solution to a major problem in our educational system. Because of this, I also offer a Classroom Management Mastery Online Course that teachers and school districts can take advantage of to assist teachers in building classroom culture. In addition, CFT offers a Classroom Management Crash Course, which are 52 weekly emails that teachers receive for an entire year with 5 minute classroom management tips taken from the book and the online course that they can apply immediately and begin seeing results. Culture-Focused Teaching answers question about how to best engage your most challenging students and how then to create the classroom culture that will work for both teachers and the students. What advice would you give to educational professionals and teachers who have become frustrated in their career? I would honestly give them a few principles from my book: Don’t give up! - You are the Best Option for Student Success (The B.O.S.S.) -Teaching is your Superpower, don't let frustration (aka, Kryptonite) take you out (of the field). - Ask & Seek: Instead of hide & seek...Ask: Ask for help; Seek: Seek Solutions. On the other hand: If an educator truly believes that this field is no longer for them and they can not bring a positive attitude & cooperative culture to the classroom; that is a different conversation and a great opportunity to do self-evaluation and make some decisions, because our children’s lives and well-being are at stake. That’s my focus... to help teachers who want help with staying in the field. Where can our readers learn more about your online courses for teachers and other services? They can visit the website: www.culturefocsuedteaching.com for more information about signing up to take the course. You are an Author of the book, “Culture-Focus Teaching.” Tell us about this book and the reason you wrote it. Culture-Focused Teaching was birthed out of both celebration and sorrow. I attended the All-out Teacher Rally on May 1, 2019 in SC where teachers from across the state along with neighboring states, decided to walk out of the classroom as a unified attempt to get the attention of SC lawmakers regarding fair pay, increase in salary, more resources and support from local government officials. This was a very controversial act one in which I was proud to say that I not only witnessed, but was a part of as I stood out there with my red #unlimitededition T-shirt and shouted, “RED for ED--SC for ED.” Honored to experience a first. The first time in my 18-year career, teachers stood up for themselves. I was proud and pained. “Why have we come to this?”, I asked myself. “What can I do about it?”...I went home and pondered and prayed and through research found that besides being underpaid and overworked, not feeling in control of classes was one of the top reasons that teachers were leaving the field. In addition to this dilemma, I look at the disparity in racial representation within SC and the US at large and found a startling reality: majority of our public school as being led by adn taught by individuals who identify as white or non black; while majority (largest percentage) of the students attending public schools, students of color (black & brown). I also noticed on that day, May 1...there many people at this march...many people...very few leaders of color were represented...only to discover...there are few (in comparison) educators of color in the field as a whole and the gap is widening. Therefore, Culture-Focused Teaching was born. --It’s a book filled with strategies and methods that will help teachers of all races and backgrounds to understand the importance of identifying, accepting and acknowledging that cultural difference tend to separate us thus causing barriers in the attempt reach students who don’t look like, believe like, live like or comprehend like...We do...therefore a common culture must be established in the classroom between student and teacher in order to create the collaborative culture of behavior and learning that needs to take place. What do you think makes an Educator to become successful in their field of education? An open mind - Being willing to learn something new everyday - Consistency matters more than you think. - Relate, Relate, Relate - Always step back and reevaluate your “why” - Communication is king - Have friends outside of the field of education (balance is everything). - Have a hobby - Seek therapy; if necessary (you couldn’t fathom the things we face daily). Please share with our readers your upcoming speaking engagements, conferences, or events. April 22nd: Keynote speaker for the Midlands Technical College Administrative Professionals Conference May 23rd: Austin, Texas-- NISOD’s 2020 International Conference on Teaching & Leadership May 26th: San Antonio, Texas-- Dynasty Conference for Businesses, Ministries and Families. June 24th: Atlanta, GA-- AccuTrain Professional Development Conference presenter July 2-27; Morogoro, Tanzania-- Limited Resource Teaching Fellowship Give us some words to educate, inspire, and encourage all of our readers of Growth Women's Business Networks Magazine. While reviewing this question, a Dr. Seuss quote comes to mind. Though it may sound simple and elementary...it’s our child-like faith that we often forget as we grow into successful adults. “Today you are you, that’s truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you!” --Dr. Seuss My word for the year is authenticity. Be who you were born and created to be; everything else will happen organically! :)

From the Publisher Greetings, It’s A New Year! Thank God for another year! A year to connect, grow and make the necessary changes for a better you. Invest in yourself, Invest in your business! We become extremely overwhelmed with our personal lives and relationships and carrying stress into the business. How about we make it a goal to treat ourselves better. Last year I was stressed out running several businesses and taking care of the home, husband, kids and worrying about my mother’s health. I started experiencing anxiety and shortness of breath. I remember several times crying in my car just feeling overwhelmed. I had to refocus back to God and make peace with things that I could not change. I developed methods that helped me get my mental health back on track. “Rejuvenation Techniques” are things that I enjoyed to help me shut my mind down and relax to be better for the next business day. I hope that one of these techniques that I shared helps you.
