Babergh Chairman presents £12,000 to Ipswich Blossom Appeal

During her term as Chairman, Cllr Grandon hosted a Charity Ball at the Royal Hospital School welcoming almost 200 guests and collected donations for her chosen charity through the Chairman’s ‘JustGiving’ page. These fundraising activities were well supported by residents across the district and Cllr Grandon presented a cheque for the value of £12,408 to The Blossom Appeal. The Blossom Appeal is a fundraising initiative led by Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity to create a multi-million pound Breast Care Centre supporting patients and their families, providing a welcoming, modern and tranquil environment during a very difficult and often traumatic period.

Cllr Kathryn Grandon said: “I chose The Blossom Appeal in part to say thank you for the amazing work that the NHS does, but also to raise awareness of the incredible service Ipswich Hospital Breast Care Team offer to families across the county. I have first-hand experience of the fantastic care, kindness and expertise offered. They have been and are a real source of support, not just to the women and men facing breast cancer but their loved ones too”.

Sandra Gosney, Community Fundraising Manager for East Suffolk & North Essex NHS Foundation Trust said: “We were thrilled to be selected as the chosen charity for the Babergh District Council Chairman last year, our thanks to the Chairman and her supporters for this generous donation.”

Let’s make Hadleigh Net Zero

People in Hadleigh are worried about climate change. We know this because that’s what lots of people told us in the street surveys that HEAT has been running. So what can we do? Global warming is caused by the release of the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released from fossil fuels. These gases trap the sun’s heat causing the earth to warm up.

This greenhouse effect is already causing the droughts, floods and fires that we see on the news and the changing weather that we can see even here in Suffolk. To stop climate change getting worse our global carbon emissions need to reach ‘net zero’ by 2050 and all around the world governments, scientists, corporations and ordinary people are taking steps to cut their emissions by changing behaviours, developing new technologies and changing laws and policies. The planet is already helping a lot in this – the oceans have absorbed around a quarter of the CO2 that we have emitted and plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere as they grow. But reducing global emissions on the scale needed is still a huge challenge and we are unlikely to meet it if we carry on as we are. Individuals can make valuable changes, such as walking or cycling more and using the car less, or eating less meat, both of which are better for our health too and together our efforts make a difference. But acting alone will never be enough. We need to tackle bigger issues such as transport, home insulation, food production, government energy policy and industry.

HEAT thinks that lots of this would be easier if we all worked together and in the autumn we will be starting a campaign to help Hadleigh really move towards being a net zero community. We have already written to James Cartlidge MP and to the Prime Minister on climate issues and we are talking with Babergh and Suffolk County Council to find out how they can help us. But what we really need is to know what you would like us to be doing here in Hadleigh. What help do you need to change? And what would you like to see HEAT doing? If you would like to tell us, or be involved in planning the campaign, then get in touch.

Hadleigh Art Club

We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those who ask, we try to give advice, guidance and constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group. We charge £2 per session to the cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon.

Annual membership is £5 and is due in May.

We have a list of weekly topics and these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current week’s) while others will be working on their own subject. Feel free to do whatever you want.

Cycling in Hadleigh something for everyone

Hadleigh Cycling Club has organised a range of activities for cyclists of all ages and abilities this summer.

On Tuesdays, our Junior Club meets at Hadleigh Community Primary at 18:30 to 19:30, with a monthly ride on the Railway Walk to help our young riders to build their confidence to ride in the ‘wild’. Our coaches will work with riders on specific skills and techniques to help them improve all the way through the season. We are also working closely with British Cycling’s Eastern Region Team to create more opportunities including additional coaching sessions at Colchester’s Northern Gateway Sports Park on Saturdays (9.00 to 11.00), as well as support to try racing in several disciplines such as cyclocross, crit and track.

On Thursdays, we are running an adult road ride of about 25-30miles, departing from Hadleigh High School lay-by at 18.30. This is a ‘Rock-Up n Ride’ format to get more miles in for those who are training for events. The focus is on group riding at a faster pace.

On Fridays, there is an informal ladies' daytime group ride. For further details please contact us via the website. This ride is very popular and may split into two groups on occasion.

On Sundays: our Club Ride departs at 9.00 from The George Inn, High Street, Hadleigh. This ride is normally about 30 to 40 miles at a speed of approximately 15 mph, depending on the preferences of the ride leader and the capabilities of the group. Our rides are 'no-drop'. That means you won't be left behind (unless you choose to be), but the group may split into smaller groups of different speeds if that makes it easier to handle. Keep an eye out for the details from the ride leader nearer the time.

The rides and activities are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub Twitter @HadleighCycling Instagram hadleighcc or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

If you feel that you can be part of a team to organise this year’s Christmas Day event, please come along and chat with us. HIDDEN GARDENS OF HADLEIGH 2023

Saturday

Above the Parapet

Cllr Mick Fraser

- Suffolk County Council Report Coronation of HRH King Charles III

On Sunday 7th May 2023, I had the great privilege of being invited by His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, Countess of Euston, to a Commemoration Service to mark the Coronation of their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. This celebration was held in the prestigious setting of St Edmundsbury Cathedral and was wonderfully delivered with beautiful choral recitals including that most moving Anthem, ‘Zadoc the Priest’. Fortunately, I had the time to return to Hadleigh to attend the Town Council arranged, Coronation Big Lunch held in the Deanery Gardens.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Council staff who put in the effort to make this day such a great success. I’m sure it will be etched into the memories of all those who attended. Also, may I take this opportunity to congratulate those town councillors who have shown the courage and commitment in standing again for their re-election onto the council. As has always been my practice, I remain committed in maintaining strong connections and to collaborate with them to resolve issues or make improvements to services for the benefit of the town and residents.

(Lower) 30 mph Speed Restriction for Stone Street

Last summer I received a petition from residents and businesses located on Stone Street (A1141), requesting that the speed limit along their stretch of road be reduced from its current 40mph to 30mph. If granted, this would in effect bring this ½ mile section of road in-line with the rest of Hadleigh. The houses there front directly onto the roadway as there are no footpaths, making this stretch particularly hazardous for pedestrians. The current speed of the road is also hazardous for vehicles exiting homes, businesses, The Bowls Club, and for slow moving farm machinery exiting Peyton Hall.

Currently, Stone Street doesn’t quite meet the highways criteria for a change in speed restriction to be automatically considered. Therefore, I have commissioned Suffolk Highways to produce a report for the Cabinet Member for Highways to consider whether the change is needed. This report will have the input from various stakeholders including the police, town council, and Kersey PC. I have funded this initial stage of the project from my local highways budget.

I would be very interested to know your thoughts on this important safety issue and would be grateful to hear your comments.

Councillor Surgery

I hold my surgery on the third Saturday of the month with the next being at 11:00 on Saturday 17th June 2023 in the anti-room of the Royal British Legion Club, George Street.

Should you need to speak to me concerning an issue that affects you, then please contact me at - email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or Facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh, Twitter: @mick_fraser. Highways faults can be reported at: https://highwaysreporting.suffolk.gov.uk/ or by telephone: 0345 606 6171.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG)

To date over 1550, clinically vulnerable patients, 75 plussers and care home residents have received their Covid booster jabs. As ever, volunteers did sterling work in the car parks to prevent any mishaps and offer assistance to anyone who needed it. Sincere thanks to them for their time and patience during the two Saturday clinics in April and May.

Due to the Health Centre’s essential renovation work which should be completed soon, there is unavoidable disruption in the Practice car park. Apologies for any inconvenience incurred. In the meantime, please bear this in mind when coming for an appointment and, if possible, park elsewhere. If you do park in the Toppesfield Hall ‘public’ car park for a Doctor’s appointment or speedy visit to the Pharmacy remember you still need to display a parking ticket.

Plans are progressing for the installation of a mini art exhibition in the main waiting area. Work of senior High School students will be on display for all to see.

If you enjoy the great outdoors why not join a very special walking group at 10am on Sunday 16th July? This leisurely ramble is in memory of the late Gareth Meredith who loved walking. It will start at the Boxford Practice and, clear signage, will take walkers cross country for 5½ miles to their final destination; the Hadleigh Practice.Families and pets are most welcome but you do walk at your own risk. You will also be responsible for your own transport arrangements. Parking at the start is very limited. No fee to join the walk but a voluntary donation will be possible. All money collected will be used to buy an infrared vein finder for use in the newly created Phlebotomy Room within the Practice.

Finally, a big thank you to the dedicated team at the Practice who gave up their Saturdays to man the vac clinics so that those eligible could receive their booster locally and not have to travel miles to an unknown, unfamiliar centre.

Encounter with God in Memory of Joyce

On Tuesday July 18th, in the Deanery Gardens, we will be holding a reflective event in memory of our dear friend Joyce Willis who died last year. Joyce was a founding member of the ‘Encounter’ team, a small group of people who offered a space for prayer, silent reflection, fellowship and learning to all in Hadleigh. Encounter became a very special part of the worship lives of many and Joyce was at the heart of it.

If you knew and miss Joyce, if you worked with or for her, or were helped by her kindness and wisdom in any way, do please join us.

We will be in the Deanery Gardens 2pm – 3.30pm on July 18th. You do not have to be part of worship, you are welcome to meet with us all and enjoy a time of peace followed by a cream tea in the Ansell Centre.

Beekeeping Notes

No creature has been studied over the years more than the honeybee, and much received wisdom passed down from one generation to the next. In the fullness of time a lot of this socalled knowledge has turned out to be absolute twaddle, a prime example being the ancient belief in Begonia.

Begonia was respected as absolute truth before being rubbished many, many centuries later. Before rejecting what follows as some form of delayed April Fool’s joke, have a look at a tin of Tate and Lyle’s Golden Syrup. If you don’t have one in your kitchen cupboard you can always borrow one off the shelf next time you go shopping. On the side of the tin is a drawing of a dead lion surrounded by a cloud of insects, and the inscription “Out of the strong came forth sweetness”. For well over 60 years I scratched my head wondering what on earth that could possibly mean. Not no more since I took up beekeeping. The words come from the Old Testament Judges 14:14, dating from around 500 BCE, and refer to the long-held belief that bees were created from rotting animal flesh.

Over the centuries this story evolved into scientific fact until in Roman times no farmer would be without his agricultural manual kept handy on the bookshelf for guidance and advice. The recommended method of begonia was “to slaughter a good young bullock of two or three years……. then wait 6 weeks after which time a miraculous cloud of bees will pour forth, like a shower from summer clouds”. Of course, there was much more to it than that, but there’s no need to go into the gruesome and gory details for now. It was not until well into the 17th century that Willian Harvey (who two years earlier had discovered the circulation of the blood) cast doubt on the whole principle. So how could such a wild belief remained unchallenged for so many years? One possible explanation is that an altogether different insect, the drone-fly, does indeed lay its eggs on rotting carrion and closely resembles the colour and shape of the honeybee. Another lies in the attraction of a belief in resurrection and the eternal soul. We believe what we want to believe. Be that as it may by the end of the 17th century begonia was well and truly consigned to the dustbin of science.

Honeybee colony losses have been unusually severe this year, with over 50% failing to make it through the winter. Spring was unusually wet and windy, and swarms reported a full four weeks later than in previous years, and smaller and fewer in number.

So every swarm is important to help build up the numbers before winter sets in again. If you do come across a swarm of bees or one comes to rest in your garden, please phone a local bee - keeper to collect them (myself - Tony Rand on 07503 164823 or Rich & Trudi Wild on 01787 210 946). We will make sure they are safely collected and rehomed.

Thank You

I would like to thank the residents of Hadleigh South who voted for me in the recent Babergh District Council election. I am very grateful to you for giving me the opportunity to represent Hadleigh South again and will do my best to speak up for Hadleigh and fight for the matters that are important to this town. I think that it is important that Hadleigh has a broad spectrum of views in its representation of the town and as an Independent I do not have to answer to any party. Just as importantly, I will continue to look after the daily concerns of individual residents - don’t forget, you can email me, phone me or visit me in person at my monthly surgery which I hold at 11am - mid day on the second Saturday of the month at the British Legion in George Street. My surgery will take a break in July and August, but I will still be available by email. I look forward to serving you for another four years and thank you again for your vote.

RITA HOYLE

20th November 1967 –1st November 2022

Last year my wonderful wife, friend and Sam’s and Ben’s mother tragically passed away after a 4-year battle with cancer.

Rita’s tribute page https://ritahoyle.muchloved.com has been blessed with £4,108.75 in donations and Val Gladwell completed a triathlon last September raising a further £815. These funds have gone to the Chemotherapy Day Unit at the Woolverstone Macmillan Centre at Ipswich Hospital. I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their kind donations made in Rita’s memory, it has meant a great deal to us and will help many others receiving much needed treatment. We have decided to continue the fundraising and seek your much appreciated support. Many of you know that Rita was partial to the occasional clothes spending foray at Kitty & Em’s As the nurses said when I visited the Day Unit, “Rita was always so well turned out…” and indeed she was for each of her 82 chemotherapy sessions always so wonderfully cared for by the staff in the Unit.

So, Kitty and Em plan to open on Sunday 11th June to raise funds for Rita’s chosen charity – The Day Unit. The day will comprise of:

10amOpen for business

11amOpening of ‘Rita’s Room’ one of the shop rooms to be dedicated in memory of Rita.

1pmRaffle Draw

4pmEnd

Kitty and Em will be having a preloved sale rail on the day where you can pick up some amazing bargains for just £10 an item and all proceeds will go to the charity. Many items will be donated by Kitty and Em and you may recognise some of Rita’s ‘collection’!

New season stock – 50% of profits to be donated.

A pre-loved rail – all sales will be donated.

Receiving an inheritance can stir a strange feeling of guilt, a sense of responsibility or even despair, as you may rather have your loved one back, than their money.

Whilst this can all be true, it can also represent an opportunity to secure your financial future.

There will be a bar and raffle plus the chance to purchase 5 min tarot and pendulum. All proceeds will be given to French’s Care Haven, so we hope you can join us for a fun evening out. There are always opportunities to learn about animal care and management and be involved in work practice by doing work experience with us, or The Duke of Edinburgh awards. We have been working with students for many years now with success on both sides. If you are interested then please speak to you school or collage and contact us for further help going forward. One of the biggest considerations is making sure the newly acquired wealth is well managed. I know from my experience; many clients have felt a great sense of relief when we create a plan. They can see how a legacy can go on to provide for their later life needs or maybe even provide greater opportunities for their family.

There are potential tax breaks and options that are only available when receiving a legacy, so whilst it might be a tough time, it is essential you get good professional advice early in the process.

If you would like to any help or support, we are here to have a no-obligation chat regarding the options available to you and your family. See our website for more information or give us a call.

The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief is dependent on individual circumstances.

New accessories at ZOR Boutique

We have just received many new accessories which are perfect to complement our cotton and linen clothing ranges. Our customers can’t get enough of the vibrant fairtrade wooden jewellery. We have had to do a large restock of these pieces as they really can bring an outfit to life.

My favourite is the multicoloured tubular necklace as this features teal, yellow, white, and gorgeous hot pink! Another summer staple is our stylish Alice Collins Linen and cotton blend white trousers. These feature an elasticated back with draw string front and take it from me they are extremely comfortable. These can be worn on a hot summer’s day with almost anything, here I have paired them with our lovely Brakeburn embroidered cotton blouse.

The Hadleigh Historian

Issue 76 (June - July 2023)

A quiz is always a bit of fun even when the questions were devised over fifty years ago. In part 1 of ‘‘Binkie’ Bacon's Quiz of Hadleigh’, Jane Richardson introduces the quizmaster Raymond Bacon, manager of Boots the Chemist at No.67 High Street. She then provides the answer to the first question. Not just one word to complete the sentence, but the story behind the event depicted in Binkie's drawing. Ten further surviving drawings and accompanying questions will appear in following issues to test your knowledge of the town’s history.

I am very grateful to Margaret Woods for her contribution ‘Early references to Holbecks’, which takes the name back to the mid-14th century, a further 76 years to that stated in Issue 73. Having featured development of Holbecks estate after its acquisition by the Rowley family in 1790, now part 4 of Holbecks: its park and its people' introduces some early tenants, including a member of parliament, a Hadleigh solicitor, a career soldier and a mystery woman who left all her furniture behind, which the Rowleys were eventually obliged to sell it.

Bridget Champeneis nee Rolfe and son Thomas are commemorated in the dark and dismal Lady Chapel of St Mary’s Church but their story ‘Mother and child remembered on a plaque’ is interesting none the less. Like many young women during the Tudor and Stuart periods, was Bridget married for financial reasons, in this case to fulfil the bequests of her father-in-law? Having moved to Kent, why were she and her son buried in Hadleigh? It was not unknown for deceased persons at this time to be transported many miles for burial. An example of this is Hadleigh-born Anne Still nee Alabaster who died in 1593 at Wells in Somerset. Her body was brought back to Hadleigh for burial and her memorial, the oldest in England to a bishop's wife, is also in the Lady Chapel. There have been many clubs and societies in the town over the years and picture feature ‘Elderly People's Welfare’ has photographs of one that ran during the 1960s, which had its own chiropody service. Music would seem to be a great interest as a choir was formed with a conductor and piano accompanist.

Only a few years ago, some Hadleigh inhabitants on holiday abroad were unable to return home because aircraft could not enter our airspace owing to a cloud of volcanic ash. However, effects of an eruption by an Icelandic volcano are nothing new. In ‘18th century snippets from Ipswich Journal’, read what happened during the winter of 1783 to 1784, when there was a shortage of bread and fuel.

Issue 76 is now available price £4 at Avis the Newsagent and The Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer. A one-year subscription (6 issues and postage) costs £32 from Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG (01449 740673).

The Big Help Out – The Big Suffolk Pledge at the Ansell Centre

WATTS G. J.

King Charles launched the Big Help Out on 8th May. It’s a campaign to showcase how volunteering benefits both communities and the people who take part. Here in Suffolk there is another opportunity to celebrate volunteering – the Big Suffolk Pledge.

Email:

o m

The Big Suffolk Pledge will run from Friday 5th May to Wednesday 7th June which marks the end of 2023’s Volunteer’s Week, and during these weeks it is hoped that hundreds of groups, charities, organisations, communities, schools and individuals will have confirmed a pledge, in the interest of supporting the success of volunteering in Suffolk.

At the Ansell Centre we totally depend on all our lovely volunteers. Without them we wouldn’t be able to run the Lunch Clubs, the Memories Cafe or the Digital Cinema. We have almost 50 volunteers in all – and that’s not counting the 12 trustees, who are also unpaid! In the picture above you can see some of the volunteers at the Memories Cafe. Next month we hope to bring you pictures of volunteers at the lunch clubs and cinema. We thought we would take the opportunity of the King’s Big Help Out and the Big Suffolk Pledge to say a big THANK YOU to every one of them.

We are always glad to welcome any new volunteers who might like to get involved with our various events. Tasks include cooking, waitressing, washing up, putting up tables and chairs and setting tables as well as the very important role of welcoming and talking to our members.

Hadleigh Library News

On Saturday 22nd April, The Friends of Hadleigh Library held a very successful plant sale and despite an uncertain forecast, the weather was kind! We would like to thank everyone involved in organising the morning, those who donated plants and everyone who came along and supported the event so generously.

New to the library is our jigsaw swap – pop in to borrow a jigsaw or swap for one you have already completed. Donations to the swap are also welcome. Do you like to Knit, or would you like to learn? Would you like to get together with others to form a community-led, friendly Knit and Natter group in the library? If you are interested, please pop in to fill in a form and speak to a member of staff for more details. Our Summer Reading Challenge is fast approaching, and we need you! The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual promotion organised by The Reading Agency that takes place across the UK where children are challenged to read six books over the Summer. Volunteering is a vital part of the campaign as volunteers are needed to help sign up children in libraries, explain how the reading challenge works, spend time talking to them about the books they have read and handing out rewards and incentives at the end of the challenge. We are ideally looking for a commitment of 2-8 hours per week for up to 6 weeks over the summer holidays.

The deadline for this year's Summer Reading Challenge volunteer applications is Friday 16 June. For more information and to apply to volunteer please go to https://www.suffolklibraries.co.uk/about/jobsvolunteering/volunteer/summer-reading-challenge-volunteer

Well so much is happening outside my door I hardly know where to begin! This is the month when our riders enter competitions and hope to walk off with silver cups and colourful rosettes. We have the outside expert Mary Thornley coming to watch entrants and judge their skills, for which we are extremely grateful. Good luck everyone!

a little warmth at long last.

I wanted to show off my rider Leslie who is bravely and determinedly getting back into fitness after an horrendous accident. The physio I can give and the added work she does herself all helps to get her back into the sport she loves. Go girl!

We have said goodbye to two of the herd and are looking to fill their hooves. We need big animals like me so we can help more adults and our ever growing-tallerteenagers to get fit and happy riding with us. So please keep thinking of suitable candidates for us, they would truly enjoy the good life here!

Members enjoyed an informative talk by Helen Chen on Asian Woodland Plants. Helen has lived in China and had first hand experience of the diversity of Asian plants informing us there are over 35,000 species in China second only to Brazil.

Her passion is Bamboo for which she holds a satellite collection in the UK and also has the National Collection of Disporum, Disporosis and Prosartes for which she gave a fascinating and humorous account. Some of the talk was linked to plants that Helen had bought to sell, as seen in the photograph attached, which created lots of interest. Helen attends local Plant Fairs where you can see some of her rare collection. The monthly competition of a vase of pink, blue and mauve flowers was well supported with Kate Banks first, Lindsay Panton a close second and Fiona Quinn third.

Forthcoming Events: Members Summer Social 19th June. Why not join and be a guest at this lovely local garden. Annual membership £12. Contact Angie at wild123@talktalk.net or 07946 744457.

Next Meeting: Monday 10th July in the Guildhall at 7.30. A talk on Wild Flowers & Orchids by Roger Hance FRPS. The competition is ‘A single rose in a vase’ so why not come along and enter, enjoy our raffle and a cuppa and natter afterwards. Members £2 Visitors £4.

Lets hope the weather improves and we can all enjoy our gardens.

Save St Mary’s Community Project ‘To Do’ List

The early phases of Save St Mary’s Community Project are under way. First consideration is an improved sound system. While this being attended to careful research is being carried out to find an efficient, cost effective heating and lighting arrangement. These are just the beginning of an essential ‘to do’ list needed to address the following problems.

•Soaring costs for heating using existing gas fires.

•Ceiling damaged beyond repair if we continue using gas heaters.

•Improved and cost effective lighting essential.

•Neglecting the roof would be unwise for potential leaks and resulting internal damage.

•Outside masonery will crumble.

•Serious accidents and possible litigation with deteriorating floor panels.

•Dwindling opportunity to make full use of the space to assist with essential income.

•Inadequate toilets and kitchen make the premises unattractive for larger events.

•Access for all needs improving to comply with modern day expectations & legislation.

•No opportunity to accommodate the needs of any local groups especially those with smaller numbers.

•Ignoring ‘green’ issues will affect efficiency and be socially unacceptable. The Save St Mary’s Community Project Team is looking forward to making this vision a reality so that the Church will adequately serve the community for generations to come.

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice

I’ve just had my bathroom retiled, but I’m not happy with the work. At first, things seemed to be going well, but then the tradesperson left to do another job and I had to chase them for updates. They did eventually come back and finish the job, but the work was pretty rough around the edges. They also left all the old tiles and plaster for me to dispose of, which I wasn’t expecting. I’ve now got the invoice, but I don’t think the price reflects the work done or the service I got. Can I challenge this?

It’s always frustrating when you run into problems with home improvements. You mention that the job looked “rough round the edges”, if this is to a degree you could consider the job unfinished or unsafe, you should be able to get the tiler to come back to fix it. You could also suggest removing the old tiles might be considered as part of finishing the job.

If the tiler considers the work complete, it’s worth knowing you’re protected by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which says the tiler should have completed the work with ‘reasonable care and skill’. If they haven’t done this, they’ve broken the law. The Act means you’re legally entitled to ask the tiler to fix the problem (if they provided the tiles as well as the service) or get money refunded (if they just provided the service and you bought the tiles). They should fix the problem or refund you in a reasonable amount of time, without causing too much inconvenience. As you’ve received the invoice for the work but not paid yet, now would be a good time to ask them to fix the issue or you can negotiate a lower price for the work.

Let the tiler know you understand what you’re entitled to. Speak to them in person, or contact them in writing/over email, there are template letters on the Citizens Advice website, either way make sure you have a written copy of anything agreed. Before you contact them, it’s a good idea to take photographs to use as evidence of the problem. Make notes about what happened, including dates and times. You should also gather any paperwork and receipts - was there any prior written agreement about who would dispose of the old tiles? Was the final cost in line with estimates or quotes given to you at the outset of the work. If not, there is advice on the Citizens Advice website about steps you can take.

If you’re struggling to come to an agreement with the tiler, there are other steps you can take to solve your problem these include using ‘alternative dispute resolution’, which is a way of solving disagreements without going to court. There are full details about how to do this on the Citizens Advice website.

Fork now proud Sponsors of Hadleigh United FC U14s

As a small family business, we really value our Community and try to support when we can. When meeting the coach Marc Rose, being keen football fans ourselves, it took us all about 2 minutes to say yes to sponsoring the training kits for U14’s team.

The lovely response from the young players & the parents have already made it so very special for us all. The kits look fabulous too!

Thank you for letting us be a small part of Your journey next year and we wish you all every success.

It’s Summertime, and the livin’ is easy and the music is breezy!

The Hadleigh Choral Society is excited to present "Songs For A Summer Evening" at St. Mary's Church in Hadleigh on Saturday 17th June, featuring a selection of popular music spanning many styles and periods, including iconic modern composers/singers. You won't want to miss this evening of lighter musical fare, conducted by Christopher Phelps with accompanists David Mitchell and David Butcher on piano. Included in the ticket price of £10 will be a selection of canapes, and there will be a cash bar with wine and soft drinks available. The concert will start at 6:30 pm. Tickets are available at St. Mary's Church office, from Hadleigh Choral Society Members, or on the door. All proceeds will benefit St. Mary's Church.

For more information visit www.hadleighchoralsociety.org.uk or call 07886 416034.

Congratulations to Tina Russo

We would like to congratulate our daughter Tina for getting the all clear on her 1yr journey with breast cancer. You have been so brave and we are so proud of you. We would also like to thank family and friends for giving Tina so much support over the last year, especially her sister Nikki for organising a marathon challenge in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, where our grandson Mitchell raised over £4,000 pounds. Once again, thank you all.

Parish Council

There has been so much happening in our Parish this month that there is not enough space in the HCN to print reports on everything. For this month only, therefore, we are not printing a summary of what took place during the Council Meeting of 26th April 2023. Full minutes of what was the Annual Parish Meeting are on the Parish Website: www.layham.org)

Retirement of three Parish Councillors

Pictured here are the three Parish Councillors - Charlotte Britton, David Pratt and Michael Woods - who retired in May from Parish Council work, having served 6, 28 and 24 years respectively. They were warmly thanked for their service during the Annual Parish Meeting.

Layham Playing Field 120 Club Winners for the month of May were: £25 Ticket No 87 Thorpe £15 Ticket No 100 Cooper

Little owl box

Another bird box on the Field Colin Brown has followed the instructions of the RSPB and built a bird box suitable to attract Little Owls. He then gave it to the Playing Field Committee and Anthony Owers placed it high in an ash tree on the edge of the field. We know there are Little Owls in the village. We must hope they soon find the box and we see families being raised. Thank you Colin and Anthony.

Village Hall Management Committee

On Sunday 7th May we held a Coronation

Tea Party to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III and this was greatly enjoyed by over forty residents. Councillor John Ward gave us a grant from his locality fund enabling our expenses to be met. Thus the ticket sales provided income to help maintain the village hall. John was able to join us for some of the afternoon and proposed the toast His Majesty.

Sunday 14th May we held our second annual book sale offering around two thousand books. This was a feast for book lovers, and we were very pleased that so many people donated and purchased books to support us. Thank you everyone, and especially to those volunteers who helped us set up and put away. We appreciate your help.

If you need to contact me concerning the hall then call Jan on 01473 871043. If you would like to book the hall for your event, or make an enquiry, please email rosey.emma@btinternet.com

Social Club

Despite the Bank Holiday the Social Club met at Layham Village Hall where we enjoyed cake, biscuits, tea and coffee whilst revisiting the Layham Photographic Archive. The collection provoked much discussion about people and life in the village. Congratulations to Colin who won Peter’s quiz on the month of May. The next Meeting is Monday June 5 10 am -12 pm when a speaker from The National Trust at will give an illustrated talk about Constable and his painting

Constable and his Paintings

An illustrated talk at Layham Village Hall on June 5 from 10 am - 12 pm.

All welcome to Social Club in Lower Layham to a talk given by Patricia Hodgkins of the National Trust Flatford. £2 to include refreshments. Donations to National Trust.

A Layham Childhood

The display of Layham Childhood that took place in Layham Mill on the Coronation Bank Holiday was attended by 132 people. In words and pictures, there were fascinating and often amusing memories of childhood that many could relate to, based largely on the spoken testimony of residents of the village. Many also enjoyed the old films ‘Hadleigh Bygones’, including a procession along Benton Street in 1937 to mark the Coronation.

The exhibition raised nearly £100 to support future work of the Layham Local History Group. Thank you to all those who contributed and attended. Special thanks to Glenda and Ed Hall for allowing us to use the mill and to Bobby Gales for lending his films. The project continues as five more people have volunteered to share their memories with Sue Keeble and Charlotte Britton.

Layham’s Coronation Rounders

On Monday 8th May, the rain held off and we enjoyed a fun celebration of King Charles III’s Coronation on Layham Playing Field. The event was well attended; we had to ship in extra beer, burgers and buns and virtually all the cakes were consumed – grateful compliments are due to the team of chefs. The first innings of rounders was won by Upper Layham, but Lower Layham succeeded in gaining the trophy. Lower Layham’s success was partly due to two players defecting to their side and to the arrival of the ice cream van catching the eye of several fielders. It was a pleasure to listen to our DJ’s music, and to see everyone enjoying themselves.

A big thank you to all of you who supported the event and to Babergh District Council for the grant that funded the Coronation Water Bottles given to the children. There were many requests for a rematch next year!

Hadleigh Cemetery Natural Burials

Concern about the environment, as well as other factors such as a love of nature and the outdoors, are leading more people to consider natural burials. There is nothing new about natural burial, far from it, as returning a body directly to the earth has been done since time immemorial.

Hadleigh Town Council are therefore pleased to announce that the natural burial meadow at their cemetery on Friars Road, Hadleigh, Suffolk is open for those who wish to have a more environmentally friendly or natural burial choice. There is now also the availability to scatter loved ones’ ashes in the new Rose Garden and another new addition is our Tree of Life (right) where memorial leaves can be added. With this being newly installed, we must bear with growth of shrubs and bushes on the Rose Garden and natural meadow as they will take some time to fully flourish.

For more detailed information about the cemetery and for pricing, please see our website www.hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk or contact us by email on admin@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk or telephone 01473 823884.

Such has been the generosity of Suffolk people, that the trip I have just returned from was almost completely provided for locally!

01473 823366

These trips provide unique experiences to give, learn from and somehow be enriched by, in standing alongside others in times of grief and anxiety, and marvelling at Ukrainian resilience, hope, belief in victory and eventual liberation from such devastating tyranny. There is ever more physical destruction - of homes, hospitals and large buildings since previous visits, the signs of mindless machine gun spraying of apartment buildings – the tank or artillery shell hole observed from my window in the adjacent residential building, and evidence of surrounding windows replaced, the frequent air raid sirens etc. There are the numerous anecdotes of war crimes, and personal traumasthe 15year old girl unable to speak for weeks after the destruction of her home, the family preparing for the funeral of the father killed in action, the grandfather taking me on a tour of his city to the recently bombed buildings, and repeatedly, earnestly asking, “ why?!”. And yet, there are moments of laughter too, that somehow arise – being stopped by Ukrainian border guards and the shell casings in my bag confiscated ( intended for the Imperial War museum), soldiers warmly shaking my hand when discovering the purpose of my visit, or observing the amazing transformation of a bright red hovercraft, to an amphibious camouflaged casualty recovery vehicle! – the hospitality of a Ukrainian family in Krakow, who have lost everything and yet insist in giving me lunch and taking me to the airport!

Thanks to so many! I realise I am just the delivery man! - some are anonymous – others first names only; prayers by; Ipswich International Church and C of E churches at; Kesgrave, Bealings and Burstall, to Ian Twinley ( John Grose), Mission Ukraine ( customs forms and “burner” phone), Magda (supplies from herself and Polish supporters), David ( generators, car service), another David (transport, and his son providing 6 laptops), John, Jon B, Chris and Kate, Sue and Bruce ( Ipswich street sale), Lucas, Antoine, Ainger Holbrows – (free generator service and battery), Hadleigh Tyres ( value service), Olena ( administration, identifying vehicles), Maryna, Marcini (generator man!), Caroline, Natalie, Helen, Mediquip (Ipswich). Lisa and her colleagues at Morrisons, Hadleigh provided food, toiletries, new children’s clothing (due to space constraints, some food redirected to Hadleigh needs and an Ipswich church meals service). Yegor, Sasha and Anastasia, who convert and prepare the vehicles and provide me hospitality, whilst they continually reside in a war zone, and work together with Sergey within their own charitable initiative, “ Restoration of The South of Ukraine”.

My next “Suffolk” venture, is to purchase 2 vehicles – for ambulance conversions, one to tow the other on a trailer, which will be of great assistance to volunteers seeking to keep vehicles going as long as possible.

Ukrainians value all aid, but many express the encouragement recieved from the care and active concern of “ ordinary” people from my own area. To support this venture financially, please contact me direct (phone or email dja939401@gmail.com ) or use and share https://gofund.me/b34423ec to donate via the charity, “British Ukrainian Aid.”

If you wish to provide any medical or humanitarian aid for shelters, hospitals, villages or volunteer military, space is precious, so I cannot take bulky clothing and bedding (blankets and towels remain invaluable to hospitals).

Year 1 have taken part in 'The Magic Door' young writers' competition. The children stepped through their own magic doors and using their imagination created their own short adventure story. If successful in the competition the children will have a chance to have their work published in a book which will then be on sale. Watch this space...

All year 6 pupils took part in a competitive rounders tournament each afternoon during SATS week. They were put into 6 teams, playing against each other once, with 2 innings. 317 rounders were scored by all the teams during the week! Much fun and laughter was had by all. The overall winners were the Quangle Dangles wearing the blue bibs. Well done to all Year 6 for such a fantastic tournament!

Welcome: The Chair welcomed everyone Report of The Last Meeting: Accepted Matters Arising: None

Standard Updates

Hadleigh Town Council (HTC) The change of council is effective from today. Six councillors are in place and others will hopefully be co-opted at the next meeting. The Big Lunch in the Deanery Gardens was a huge success with over 1200 attending. Grateful thanks offered to the organising team and to Fr Jo for the use of the gardens and to HEAT for safely fencing off the river bank. HTC will be at the Hadleigh Show and will have an exhibition of items from the archives. The Guildhall garden will be open, for the first time, on 3 June as part of the Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh, serving Pimms and other drinks with refreshments in the Guildhall.

Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council (Bdc) Elections achieved a 30% turnout. The council will be formed with a coalition who are meeting for a training session at Endeavour House today. Roles and responsibilities will be agreed in around five to six weeks. There were generally no issues with the requirement for photo ID.

Visit Hadleigh Visit Hadleigh will be at What’s About Hadleigh on 27 May explaining their services and ways to get involved. Also, on 3 June (Hadleigh Hidden Gardens) they will be providing Visitor Information and the Memories of Cedric Morris exhibition which will be in the Guild Room. There are now two town guides and two new trainees. Hanging baskets will be in place by the end of May. The inclement weather has delayed work on the community gardens but the first session (where volunteers will be warmly welcomed – even if just for half an hour !) is from 10am till noon on 13 May. The planters by Suffolk Building Society will be filled with herbs as an edible garden and the others are being replanted (Maiden Way, Greggs and the church).

Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) The report was given to the meeting and can be found in the PPG column in each month’s Hadleigh Community News.

St Marys Church A full upgrade to the PA system has finally been approved and it is hoped work will start towards the end of summer. Approval for refurbishing the Vestry awaits further reports from the wood conservators. The whole reordering plan can be broken down into “Survive & Thrive”. To survive we need new heat and light systems and a new floor. The new lighting system is expected to be a chandelier style, radiant heat and LED light system, placed within each of the church’s fourteen arches. This gives the flexibility for each one to be individually controlled as required and does away with the need for large plant storage areas. A repaired and strengthened south roof will offer a thirty-year life with appropriate weight-bearing capability for solar panels which will help defray the cost of electricity. This means that the heat and light requirements can be approved and put in place before having to look at renewing the deteriorating floor, as well as the flooring material options being broader. When the basics to Survive have been put in place we can look to Thrive and move onto our other exciting plans and the muchneeded extension.

HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team Some 35 people attended the talk on the River Brett where they learned the overall health of the river is “moderate to reasonable” and is not deteriorating. Raw sewage, though a scandalous problem in many areas is, thankfully, not currently a big problem in the Brett. Anglian Water has made significant investment in the Hadleigh sewage works which is helping maintain the quality of the river. The largest barrier to improving the river’s health is increased nitrogen and phosphate levels from agricultural runoff. HEAT is planning a campaign for later in the year to assist everyone in Hadleigh to reach net zero carbon emissions. Please submit any ideas for helping to HEAT.

The use of some 15 cameras in a number of communities, lent by SCC to measure heat loss in homes, has now finished. It was generally felt that although the equipment was well regarded, it did not prove to be of much practical use. HEAT will be at the Hadleigh Show and look forward to welcoming everyone to their stand.

Cost of Living Concerns The Pop-Up meals continue every second and fourth Wednesday at St Mary’s and donations of cakes (with a full list of their ingredients, please) will be gratefully accepted.

Hadleigh Men’s Shed As this is now up and running, it will no longer be an agenda item but will be reported on as wished under AOB. Benton End Bat boxes are up and there is a lot of evening action. Five interviews have produced four coming back for a trial session with the head gardener. Benton End has agreed with the Men’s Shed that signs will be produced for the Hidden Gardens event and the house will be open for tours, of which there will be five during the day with a maximum of ten people, at £10 per person, on each. They are filling fast and if available spaces sell out, there will be an Open Day a little later. It must be noted that there is no parking at all at Benton End, nor is there the ability for anyone to be dropped off, due to the fact the entry drive is shared with another business. There can be no turning in the drive which means cars would have to reverse out on to the main road. Cars must park in the town’s car parks and then everyone will need to make the short walk out to Benton End. There can be no exceptions to this.

A O B Chairs were agreed for the rest of the year. The Chair thanked Jess for taking notes at every meeting and for her commitment as churchwarden.

Next Meeting: Tuesday 13 June 2023 @ 4:15pm Hadleigh Pool & Leisure. Chair: Rickaby Shearly Sanders

Jason Frederick

Film and music have been award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist Jason Frederick’s main enthusiasms since first seeing the film Goldfinger on television as a nine year-old.

Raised in Canada, he relocated to the UK after a decade of living and working in Hollywood, California. The move to the United States gave him the opportunity to study at the University of Southern California with composers such as Elmer Bernstein (Ghostbusters, To Kill a Mocking Bird and The Great Escape), Joe Harnell (The Incredible Hulk, The Bionic Woman) and Christopher Young (Spider Man 3, Pet Sematary). After graduating in the late 1990s, he remained in Los Angeles and composed for film and television. His music can be heard in films such as 101 Dalmatians II : Patch’s London Adventure and Big Momma’s House, and television programs such as Disney’s The Replacements and Top Gear USA, amongst many others. He can also be seen performing new original filmscores live-to-picture across the UK as “The Classic Horror Experience”. Now settled in Suffolk, Jason is offering tuition across all ages and abilities in guitar, piano, ukulele and theory and composition.

Hadleigh Walkers

Our June walk on Saturday 10th will again start and end in Hadleigh. We will leave Stonehouse Road car park at 0930 and proceed via Lower Layham, Shelley, Sodom & Gomorrah, Holton St Mary, Lt Wenham, Binney’s Wood, Woodlands and back along the Railway Walk into Hadleigh. The distance of the entire route is around 12 miles, and we should be back in Hadleigh around 1400. We will have two short refreshment stops along the way. As usual, we aim to average a not-too-demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr) and walkers need to be able to maintain this pace. Any kind of weather is possible so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground may be muddy or rough in places. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Route maps can be requested from this web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com or email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com

Thank you, Hadleigh!

Green councillors elected to Babergh

We’re delighted to have been elected to Babergh District Council on 4th May (Jane for Hadleigh South and Simon for Hadleigh North), and we’re hugely grateful to the residents of Hadleigh for the support and trust you’ve given us.

www.hadleighcommunitynews.co.uk

We will be working hard to represent all the people of Hadleigh to ensure that our town continues to be a wonderful place to live, and we’ll be doing our best to act on the issues you raised with us on the doorstep during our election campaign.

The problems of traffic congestion, speeding, parking, and the condition of roads and pavements came up time and again. We want to tackle these problems by campaigning to reduce speed limits to 20mph on residential streets, including signs to remind drivers to slow down, and by promoting active transport to encourage more walking and cycling. We also recognise that people need their cars for longer journeys as public transport is totally inadequate. We want to make Hadleigh a safe place for all road-users including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

A good way to get potholes and other road issues addressed is for as many people as possible to report cases on the county council’s website at https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/roads-pavements-andverges/potholes/report-a-pothole .

Size criteria need to be met (200mm wide, 200mm long and 40mm deep), but the more complaints that are received the more likely it is that action will be taken!

If you have concerns that you want to raise with us, or if you want to get involved in tackling any of the issues we’ve mentioned, please get in touch with us at:

The Gareth Meredith Memorial Walk

Alan and Beryl Meredith invite you to join them on the Gareth Meredith Memorial Walk in memory of their late son who loved walking. The 5½ mile walk will start at Boxford Health Centre and end at its counterpart in Hadleigh. There is no signing up or joining fee but it is hoped that walkers will make a donation to the Hadleigh and Boxford Health Centre Charitable Trust instead. The collection is to show the family’s appreciation for the care and support the Practice gave Gareth during his many years of ill health.

It is important to emphasise that this is not a competitive event but rather an opportunity to remember Gareth and or just enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the beautiful countryside between Boxford and Hadleigh. Families and well behaved dogs (on the lead) are most welcome. The route will be clearly marked. Walkers will be expected to make their own way to the Boxford Health Centre where parking is limited. Participants walk at their own risk and will be expected to respect the countryside along the way. Comfort facilities will be available at the Hadleigh Health Centre.

If you have any queries about the walk please contact Alan Meredith 01473 822 433 or alan.k.meredith@btinternet.com

Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club

April was Marathon month with Brighton, Manchester and London being run by some of our members.

To start, Adam Chamberlin ran Brighton Marathon on 2 April. What started as a flippant comment about signing up back in 2022, suddenly became a reality. Adam hadn’t been running for very long and originally started to keep his wife company in her training for races.

Back to the Marathon and Adam had lots of questions running through his mind as he pounded the streets. Why was he here? When will the pain end?

He kept his mantra in mind, “Continuous Forward Momentun” no matter what happened, he knew he had to keep going forward, one step at a time. He didn’t have a goal he had committed to, but secretly would have loved to finish in under 4 hours.

As he ran past the bleak industrial units, which within the last few miles had been replaced by Brighton sea front, came the huge crowds, who motivated him to the finish. The crowds got louder and his pace got quicker and by the time he could see the finish line, he was buzzing with energy. His final sprint, that may have looked more like a fast hobble, got him across the finish line with a time of 03:52:28! Two weeks later, on the 16 April, four runners lined up in various starting waves to run the Manchester Marathon, two of whom were tackling this distance for the first time.

The conditions were near perfect – a light breeze, overcast skies and no rain. Katrina Rigby set off and she was followed in subsequent waves by Vicky Tapp, Samantha Tapp and Geraldine Suckling. The weather remained kind with only a light shower as the runners progressed around a mostly flat and well supported course. The crowd support was superb and all runners were grateful for the encouragement. The sugary treats being handed out around the course were well received and helped push the runners towards the finish. All of the Hares finished the course in great times, with 3 achieving marathon personal bests. It was an unforgettable day and a race we would all recommend to other runners considering racing at this distance. And finally to TCS London Marathon on 23 April. The Club had Steve Hunt, Rachel Bodsworth, Kevin Carpenter, Aden Bell and Joel Bamsey running. For Joel it was his first time participating and Steve had won the Club ballot, having last run his last London Marathon in 2011 and this being his 12th time running!

Whilst waiting in the start pen Steve felt good and well prepared, having put in many training miles with his son Stuart. His wave started in the rain and his legs kept going at a pace that he felt would get him round in under 4 hours. 12 years since his last race the crowds were louder and bigger and kept him going as well as his family who were there to support him. The miles ticked by, steady and sometimes uncomfortable, but the training paid off and he didn’t hit the dreaded wall and finished in a time of 3 hours 55 minutes. Much to his amazement a minute quicker than in 2011! Joel, Rachel finished in under 4 hours, Aden just under 3 hours and Kevin dead on 3 hours.

A huge well done to our runners who after all the training have run so well at their respective Marathons.

My mission, this month, is to find a home for two retired racing greyhounds that tower over me and have languished at SESAW for over a year.

Bodie and Mikey, aged five and four respectively could be separated but that would be a shame as they have always been together. They need an experienced home with no cats, two on-lead walks a day and a comfy sofa. If you have room in your heart and home for these beautiful creatures, please leave a phone message or email with your contact details.

If you, like me, are not an early riser, here are two events for you! We will be selling various items at a Boot Sale on the Football Ground in Long Melford, CO10 9JY, 2.30pm on 9th June. We will also have a stall and a Pets Corner at the Summer Fete on Leavenheath Village Green, CO6 4PY, 1pm of 17th June. Do pop in to say hello if you fancy a trip out.

More volunteers are still needed to look after the dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals until the right persons comes along. If you would like to help or are looking for a new pet to complete your family, please visit our website or call in to see our many rescued animals. We are open 10am to 1pm, Thursday to Sunday and look forward to seeing you. If you wait until lunchtime, you may even catch a glimpse of me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua!

Boudicca Border Morris News

The absolute recent for Boudicca was our Coronation Dance Out on Sunday 7th May. We met in the Market Place and processed through to the Deanery Tower.

With the Boudicca Border Big Band on fine form, we danced our hearts out for a large, appreciative audience. Even the Weather Gods smiled on us.

Our next event in Hadleigh is the DAY OF DANCE on Saturday 10th June. Eight local and varied dance Sides will descend on the town from 11.00am. We will start in the Market Place with each side performing a “Show Dance”. All with then March around St Mary’s Church Yard before dispersing to dance sites around the town. From 12.00pm, there will be dancing at The King’s Head, The Cock and The George. The day will end with all the musicians sharing some tunes in the car park of The George. Hope to see you there.

Hadleigh Women’s Institute

Sarah Thompson's talk in May did not disappoint - it was truly inspirational to hear the background to her writing the book about that fantastically brave delightful little boy Tony Hudgell who, to date since the age of 5 years (now 8 years old), has raised well over £1,000,000 for the hospital that has cared for him since he had both legs amputated when a baby due to unspeakable cruelty. Sarah still has some copies of the book and good quality cards. This month we look forward to welcoming Jo Hull from Benton End Flower Farm. Our AGM followed Sarah's talk which reflected a successful and busy year with an increase in membership. In recognition of her having been a founder member of our WI group we were pleased to announce that Joan Rudman has been granted Honorary Membership. She was accompanied by her son Jeff and daughter, the latter having also been a member in years past when she lived in Hadleigh.

In May the Lunch Bunch enjoyed meeting up at the Brewers Arms, the Bookworms read Keeper of Lost Things and will next be reading Dame Sheila Hancock's autobiography, and the Amblers had a great few hours in Arger Fen followed by refreshments at Assington's Country Kitchen. The three groups are getting together for a day out in Huntingfield to include a walk, lunch and talk in the parish church (last year Bookworms read The Huntingfield Paintress).

Did you have the opportunity to visit our stall in the What's About Hadleigh on the 27th May. If you think you might like to join, come along for a 'taster' evening. Contact either the Secretary Glenn Abbassi 07870 312409, or President Sheila Webb 01473 827554 and we will arrange to welcome you. We meet on the third Tuesday in the Library Seminar Room at 7.30pm. Next meeting is on the 20th June.

Flowton in Flower 17-18 June 2023

The tiny Suffolk village of Flowton - in the middle of nowhere but only a short distance from Hadleigh and Ipswich - is opening its gardens and holding a colourful flower festival for the first time in four years. There will be nine very different gardens to visit, and Flowton's wonderful 13th century church will host a spectacular flower festival themed around ‘Our church, our community.’ There will also be amazing displays of military vehicles and vintage tractors around the village, and a local history exhibition. Visitors will be able to see the church’s extraordinary new weathervane featuring a mother and baby elephant. This was donated by a local resident who, as a child of the Raj inthe 1920s, had a baby elephant called Daisy. It also remembers a travelling circus that overwintered in Flowton in the 1920s, whose elephant took a daily walk round the village!

Refreshments, lunches and cream teas will be available throughout the weekend at St Mary’s Church. Proceeds will go to help maintain St Mary's Church, Flowton, and to FIND (Families in Need), the local Ipswich food and furniture bank which provides crucial support to many local families and individuals in need. The flower festival and church will be open from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June. Gardens will be open from 12.00 to 5.00 both days.

Hadleigh Cricket Club

After an extremely wet start to the season, which saw our first three weekends washed out, and just 5 out of 12 games played, finally the weather has started to improve! All three of our senior sides have wins under their belts, and fingers crossed the summer is finally here!

The unpredictable weather also affected the start of our junior season, with torrential Friday afternoon downpours leading to the calling off of our first two sessions. We finally got underway on the 12th May, and it was encouraging to see the ground filled with young cricketers developing their skills and most importantly, having fun. The bar is open every Friday evening from 6pm, so why not come down and enjoy sundowners on our new deck?

Off the field, we have launched our new social membership, allowing members of the local community to enjoy club benefits including discounts at the bar and with some of our valued sponsors for just £25 - available behind the bar. The membership also gives priority access to our social events. The silent disco on 13 May was great fun and we are already looking forward to the Club Tropicana night on 17th June.

We are also thrilled to have received a food hygiene rating of 5 recently, so you can be confident that our BBQs, Sunday cricket teas and other bar snacks are prepared safely.

To keep up to date with club news, events and fixtures, follow us on our social media media platforms - Facebook: Hadleigh CC Social; Instagram: Hadleighcricketclub and Twitter: @HadCC_Suffolk If you can’t make it to the ground for a game, all Saturday matches will be live-streamed on our YouTube channel: Hadleigh Cricket Club - Suffolk

Local golfers are raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support

Local golfers Matt Bray, Jim Lambert & Andy Lambert are raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support in Stoke by Nayland on Wednesday 21st June.

T2GRN are assembling to take on the Longest Day Golf Challenge at Stoke by Nayland golf club & resort to raise vital money for people with cancer.

Macmillan Cancer Support provides physical, financial and emotional support for people living with cancer. By playing 72 holes and walking between 15 & 20 miles in one day, this band of golfing legends will help Macmillan continue to be right there when they’re needed most. Speaking before the event, the team said: ‘We’re really excited about taking on this year’s Longest Day Golf Challenge. It’s great to get a group of pals together, play some golf and raise money for Macmillan to help people living with cancer at the same time. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us so far and is helping to make it a success.

We will be teeing off at 4.30am, playing 36 holes followed by a quick 1 hour break to resume the next 36 holes. If all goes well, we’re hoping to be finished up by 8pm!’ To support T2GRN please visit the Longest Day Golf Challenge website or scan the QR code below & search for T2GRN to donate.
