Work to transform the former headquarters of Babergh District Council in Hadleigh into new homes has started following the appointment Gipping Construction. The regeneration of the former council offices on Corks Lane will preserve and enhance the original building and deliver 49 new homes which will benefit from the character and features of the existing building through sympathetic conversion. The site is in a key location in Hadleigh, close to shops, schools, and the town’s amenities. Over the coming weeks, Gipping Construction will start site preparation including clearing vegetation and the erection of hoardings. The main development work will then follow. It is expected that the new homes will be available early summer 2024.
The whole development is part of Babergh District Council’s ongoing investment in the town, including over 20 affordable homes at Angel Court that were completed last year. In addition, the vision for Hadleigh as welcomed the introduction of the Innovate Local scheme for start-up businesses at Hadleigh market and the Virtual High Street to boost visibility of Hadleigh’s independent retailers, all of which support economic growth and attract new residents and businesses.

Cllr David Busby, cabinet member for Finance, Assets and Investments, Babergh District Council commented: “The regeneration of our council’s former offices will provide much needed housing while preserving the heritage of building. With proximity to Hadleigh’s shops, leisure facilities and local schools, the new homes will be a welcome addition to the town supporting our ambition that people in Babergh have somewhere that they’re proud to call Andyhome.”Laflin, Director, Gipping Construction, Gipping Construction said: “We are delighted to be involved in bringing the former office building back into use. It is important that the character of building is maintained while delivering 49 homes for residents in Hadleigh. This is an important project for the town, and we look forward to working with Babergh Growth and the Council to realise this project.”

Many people in Hadleigh and beyond will have known Rev’d Joyce Willis who very sadly died in St Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich on 1st August. Her wisdom, love, support and kindness to others will be long remembered. She was Hadleigh’s first lady priest, one of the first to be ordained in the country. She inspired and influenced others with her strong Christian faith and was also a member of the Third Order of Franciscans. Dearly loved by her family, she was a very special person who helped many along life’s way. Funeral to be held at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on Tuesday 30th August at 2pm. How likely is it that your property transaction will fall-through? It is probably more likely than you think but your choice of conveyancer can make all the difference. Give yourself the best chance of a successful completion on your home purchase or sale by working in partnership with Holmes & Hills' residential property team. Benefit from our 90% successful completion rate for property transactions, which is 20% higher than the national average.* What number of property transactions fall-through? Rightmove report that, on average across the country, approximately 25% of property transactions fall-through**. It is a much higher percentage than most buyers and sellers expect it to be. This means, subject to your choice of law firm, your transaction faces a 1 in 4 chance of falling-through. Reduce the risk of your transaction falling-through by benefiting from a 20% higher rate of success. Those using Holmes & Hills' conveyancing services benefit from a materially higher successful completion rate compared to the national average. Your transaction has an increased chance of successfully completing when Holmes & Hills is advising and representing you in your property transaction. Why do property transactions fall-through? Your transaction might fallthrough for a number of reasons, most of them outside of your control. These include: your buyer finding another property; being unable to secure their mortgage; or a change in their circumstances which means they can no longer proceed with the purchase. Benefit from fixed fee packages. As well as an increased chance of your transaction successfully completing, Holmes & Hills provides fixed-fee residential conveyancing quotes with no hidden charges. When you obtain conveyancing quotations from other law firms you may find charges for completing Stamp Duty Land Tax forms, dealing with lenders and leasehold fees. With Holmes & Hills, these items are included within our legal fee. We give you a simple, transparent, fixed-fee quotation.

In 1982 a new post office had been approved for the town, but the high architectural design requirements to meet the local conservation area, caused the abandonment of the project. Eventually, a post office counter was incorporated within a shop further along the High Street.

The component sections for a temporary Post Office shown arriving at the present High Street Car Park site during the 1980’s. During early 1985 a bulge in the brickwork of the front elevation of the Hadleigh Post Office in Church Street was discovered following a failure of the brick footings. The façade was rebuilt using the original Suffolk White bricks. To maintain counter services during this major building operation, a temporary post office was provided, using the High Street Car Park as the location, which was owned by the Post Office, but leased to the B.D.C. as a car park.

Commercial site – In July, cabinet gave final approval for a Commercial Workspace Development on land adjacent to the A1071 that we acquired from Persimmon Homes. This demonstrates how we can be proactive in ensuring that new housing can deliver local jobs. And finally…the redevelopment of Corks Lane is proceeding! Early in July, cabinet gave final approval to the project to enable work to commence and by the time you read this, work should have started. It will provide 49 new homes and represents a major investment in Hadleigh by Babergh. I know there are those who question our decision to develop the site ourselves and would prefer that we sold it, but it is not worth very much on the open market and further delay and costs while we try to do this, without any guarantee of success, would be irresponsible.
Active travel – Babergh and Mid Suffolk are the first councils in Suffolk to progress a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan. It includes almost 200 sustainable travel infrastructure schemes across the two districts, identified through an extensive consultation that received almost 2,000 responses from the public.
So, as you can see, there are good news stories and Babergh continues to deliver improvements for the wellbeing of residents and businesses across the district.

Many of you may not have wanted to cope with the travel chaos getting out of the country, but it hasn’t mattered: we have had a glorious hot summer to enjoy the best that Britain can offer. Even though our staff have managed to take well-earned breaks, Babergh has got a lot done over the past three months and I thought I’d take the opportunity to highlight some of the things we are particularly proud of.
Cllr John Ward, Leader, Babergh District john.ward@babergh.gov.ukCouncil Thank You
Housing business plan – In July, cabinet approved a new 30-year business plan, which sets out the long-term priorities, plans and actions for council housing. It includes a target for building or acquiring new council homes and also plans to improve the energy efficiency of all our houses to achieve a minimum EPC C rating by 2030 through a £16m retrofit programme. Encouraging wildflowers – Following the approval of the Babergh and Mid Suffolk Biodiversity Action Plan in November 2020, we have now begun trialling wildflower verges. We are reducing grass cutting in specific councilmaintained areas to give existing wildflowers a chance to thrive. Initially, the grass is being left to grow to see which wildflowers already exist. We will then seed the areas in the Spring in a way that encourages more flowers to grow over the coming years. The flowers provide food for bees and other wildlife, while the longer grass provides shelter for small mammals and reptiles and helps keeps the ground cooler and less dry. But this isn’t just about the wildlife: it will also benefit our residents who will have attractive habitats to explore in the late Spring and Summer. Community fund – We have just approved a £200,000 fund for Community Development Grants. Community groups can bid for a share of up to £20,000 of this to improve their neighbourhoods.
Marguerite would like to thank everyone who joined us for an afternoon tea on Monday 8th August to raise money for breast cancer, which our daughter Tina is having treatment for. Thanks also to John, Nikki, Tina and Kathryn for all their hard work on the day. The money raised was £500. Once again, thank you all.

Cost of living – In June, cabinet approved a Cost of Living Action Plan so that we can do our bit to help residents through the current crisis that is hitting some hard. It includes measures to alleviate immediate hardship and also interventions to prevent crisis, the latter building on work we have already started since we launched our Communities and Wellbeing strategies.

Last month the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre hosted a second free defibrillator training session for anyone interested in learning how to use a machine. First Responders, Trevor Sheldrick was ably assisted by two fellow Responders, Yvonne Free and Sarah AttendeesEggleston.were shown how to administer CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) the first emergency lifesaving procedure when a patient has collapsed. This was followed by the application of an AED (automated external defibrillator) to try and regularise the patient’s heartbeat. Participants had an opportunity to practice both skills if they wished. The free sessions are in response to the acquisition of several new defibrillators in Hadleigh and the prospect of more to come. Whilst this is admirable, it is even more worthwhile if folks know how to use them. A further two sessions are planned including an evening session for those unable to attend daytime fixtures. Sessions are not limited to Hadleigh residents. The inserted Town Council map shows where all the machines are in Hadleigh. The hope is readers will not only keep this in a handy place but also take time to memorise their location for future use when time is of the essence. Further copies are on display in the town. Please seriously consider attending one of the training sessions. It is something we all ought to know how to use. No exams, testing or crawling around the floor is required. Practicing the CPR and AED is optional. Places are limited so please book. The members of the Hadleigh based Country Threads (CT) craft group are mourning the loss of one of their much valued and loved member, Sue Marshall. Sue, who passed away just recently, spent her last days in St Elizabeth Hospice. This was a fitting sanctuary for her to spend her last days as she has worked tirelessly for many years to raise money for the centre. Her individually created ‘Material Memory’ bears, made from deceased patients’ clothing, not only provided lasting comfort to relatives but also helped raise much needed funds for the Hospice. Her goal was to make 500 of the endearing toys but, sadly, her untimely death prevented her from achieving her aim. Happily, she passed on her skills to a friend who will carry on her good work. Sue’s lively, good humour and sense of fun will be sadly missed at the CT’s Wednesday gatherings and at the Hospice itself but what a wonderful legacy she leaves in her lovable bears.

The Cock Inn, Hadleigh Well folks, at the time of writing this month’s article the rain has finally arrived following record temperatures during late July and early August. The UK broke through the 40 degree level for the first time since records began. It’s been great for the pub and hospitality industry but not so great for the gardens and the local fire brigades. Our garden area has been busier than normal and cider has replaced cask ale and lagers as the tipple of choice. Its one of those drinks that ice can be added too without changing the flavour. Long live the apple. For those who don’t know, we now stock Stowford Press on draught. It’s a medium dry sparkling cider brewed by Weston’s and originally known as Vat 53, the name of the oak vat in which it matured. It is extremely popular and we would love you to try it for yourself. For those unaware of the history and origins of cider, here is a brief summary. Cider is a product of the slow fermentation of apples and then aged in mostly vats made of oak. Any apple can be used though cider apples are the most popular here in the UK. As a nation we are the largest consumers of cider in the world( per capita) and some 56% of apples grown in the UK are used within the cider industry. We are not sure of its true origins. We know it was drunk by the Romans, Vikings and Anglo Saxons and if it were not for cider there may not have been any sparkling wine as French wine makes firstly made sparkling cider before sparkling wine. Most cider makers are located in the south west of the UK though even our very own county of Suffolk is home of the famous Aspall brand. Today flavoured bottled cider is king with Strawberry & Lime, Mixed Fruits and Watermelon & Citrus to name but a few. Bottled brands such as Rekorderlig (Sweden) and Old Mout (New Zealand) are now brand leaders, leaving the ever popular Bulmers Original and Magners watching from the sidelines. The Hadleigh Summer darts League has now concluded and what a finish. Dawsey’s Jets (Cock Inn Team) pipped Kraken (George) on the final day by one point. Congratulations to all the teams that played including Cock Inn Rebels who finished 6th. For our dedicated sports fans, the new footy season is underway and already Man City are looking keen favourites and good to see London lads Arsenal making a gallant start. The season kicked off early due to the World Cup taking place in Qatar in Mid November through to late December. Remember, you can watch all the live football, Sky & BT Sport at The Cock and we have the giant screen for those special games too. Rugby Union is back with a bang and it seems like there was no break at all this summer. All four nations toured with some super results from Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. The forthcoming Six Nations look to be an exciting one as any team seems capable of beating anyone. Our live music is back with a bang during September. You can see the wonderful 3 Steps to Heaven on Sunday the 4th and the popular Words & Music Duo on Sunday 25th, both at 3pm. For those who love a night of Irish ballards, come along on Saturday 17th at 8.45pm and see Great Craic. If you love the Pogues you will love these guys. Early Bird, our drinks promotion that helps you save that little extra have been extended to include our lunchtimes, so you can now grab great offers between 12 noon and 2pm Monday to Friday as well as between 5pm and 7pm. Don’t forget our Buskers night on the first Tuesday of each month and the Pub Quiz on the second Tuesday. Its Novice darts too every Wednesday at 8pm. Join in, its great fun. Newly starting in September our monthly ‘Open Mic’ night. Fun commencing at 8pm and will take place on every third Tuesday each month.

Aid for Ukraine
My next planned trip (26th August) is delivery of the vehicle in the photo, with Andy Breitsprecher’s proprietor of Ainger Holbrows generous assistance in providing reduced price repair work and a free service – thank you Andy, and with significant funding also from ‘Never Surrender UA’ – to a displaced persons shelter in Ukraine, providing for adults and children who have lost loved ones and whose homes have been destroyed in the east of Ukraine. I will be driving in convoy with another vehicle delivering supplies to a military hospital ‘Never Surrender UA’ is supporting.
The Ukraine hospitals, I have visited one twice now, have such continuing need for any medical supplies they can possibly access and their gratitude on receipt of even relatively small offerings, is so moving in the face of such great need. The world knows Ukraine health services are sickeningly targeted in this war, even as the need for them ever rises!
However, we see the media focus predictably moving on and compassion fatigue a natural factor too. But, I am encouraged by so many groups and individuals stirred to add to the overall efforts to try and mitigate against some of the impacts of this terrible conflict. Being retired, moved by this war, and perhaps too due to some Ukrainian heritage in my history, I have found time to do what I find I can, and sometimes joined with others (including ‘Never Surrender UA’ recently), to assist supply deliveries to volunteer soldiers, and transport of refugees to the UK.
If you would like to assist in filling the car with the supplies needed by the shelter, offering any health care items for hospitals, or providing for the continuing supplies trips, please do not hesitate to contact me on 07500 531901.
The Shelter needs all kinds of items to support everyday living for all ages, babies to the elderly; non-perishable food items, dried dairy/milk products, canned food, cereals, fruit juices, baby food/bottles, nappies, wet-wipes, toiletries, hygiene products, medicines, cosmetics, toys, electric room fans.
Partridges have donated children`s boots, hats and gloves - winter will be here soon!! The Idler bookshop and Post office have provided school start supplies - Morrisons and Just Food Hadleigh have together contributed fantastically, thank you Neil and Lisa.
The war in Ukraine continues, with the relentless destroying of lives and devastation of properties and infrastructure. Ukrainian soldiers and volunteers courageously defend, and even take back some areas attacked, whilst civilians endeavour to continue to live and work where possible, as normally as possible. In my trips to Ukraine and meeting with numerous soldiers and civilians, I am awed by their courage, determination and resilience. They fight for their families and homes, and I believe, for Europe too.
Although I have mentioned the worry of ‘compassion fatigue’, it seems that the hearts of Hadleigh`s people (and many others I encounter) still remain warm and receptive to the needs of others, despite the pressures and cost of living crisis we all experience - what a testimony to the image we are all created in!

For those of us involved in HEAT the best thing has been coming together with others to plant and water trees, test the water in the River Brett, watch children explore nature in our Forest School, listen to speakers or celebrate the swifts using new HEAT boxes.
As the anthropologist, Margaret Mead said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.” With over 170 supporters HEAT is no longer a ‘small group’ in Hadleigh and together we know we are making a difference. If you’d like to get involved and be part of something bigger email us at hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com or come along to our meeting to share ideas and hear about our projects on 22 September at 7.30pm in the Community Room at United Reform Church.

Were wise words from John Hall who spoke to our HEAT meeting in July. Day after day we are faced with scenes of wildlife destruction and human suffering around the world caused by climate change. This has been brought home to us this summer in Hadleigh seeing parched fields, rivers, gardens and parks. Some people still question the science of climate change but many more of us feel overwhelmed by the scale of what needs to be done and the limitations of individual actions. Either way denial and fatalism can be the most comfortable option. If you are looking for something to do as an individual John Hall showed us the most effective ways we can reduce our carbon footprint. By reducing the amount of meat we eat, changing how we travel (flying and driving less and using non-fossil fuel cars), insulating our homes and using renewable energy sources we can all make a difference. The flies have been horrendous for the horses and donkeys this summer, plus the wasps, I have to say I can’t wait to see them all gone. My heart goes out to all the wildlife, please give them help with food and lots of water. You can imagine how it is going with the grass, there isn’t any, so we are feeding hay and haylage as if we are in the middle of the winter, goodness knows how much that will go up in price later this year and what the shortages will be, beings there has not been a second cut. I am so relieved we have field shelters for the horses and donkeys to go into and get out of the weather and for some reason the flies tend not to go inside the shelters by their thousands like they do when the animal is out in the field. We put fly masks on those who do not mind them, to keep the flies from going in their eyes and causing infections and with dozens of flies they get around each eye, they can hardly see. Annie in the photo has her own fly mask with her big thick fringe, we have platted her big thick mane so that it keeps her cooler, Annie loves her bright and well kept open shelter. The helpers do a lovely job keeping the shelters super clean and animals spotlessly groomed, I have to admit I am a bit of a stickler that everything is done to high standards. There is a saying ‘There’s no point doing something if you are not going to do it properly’ Frankie one of our donkey’s in the photo, is having a nice time with some visitors, which is lovely to see. We are looking for someone who has a sink and some kitchen cupboards they no longer need, if you are having a refurbishment or a clear out and your kitchen bits are not damaged, please give me a call, we need a part kitchen area for our first aid and meds Beingarea. short of volunteers is something we would love to not happen, unfortunately situations in other people’s lives change, but we can never have enough, so could really do with some more help, saying that, the few volunteers I do have are wonderful.
Every Thursday throughout the summer holidays St Mary’s Church and the churchyard has been buzzing. There has been FREE Food on offer but so much more besides. It started with a simple idea; how can we help families in the school holidays with the “cost of living” crisis? Many of the big supermarkets offer free or cheaper kids meals and a group of us, both from within the churches in the town and those with only loose church connections wanted to do our bit. Yes, we hoped to reach those on free school meals but let’s face it everyone is struggling in one way or another. Loneliness and mental health are real issues that also need addressing. So, we have no restrictions on who can join us and there are no strings, no sermons to sit through, no church literature to take home. We never knew what to expect but planned to make some sandwiches and cake, add in some healthy fruit and ask Morrison’s if they could donate a few Webits.have been blown away by Morrison’s generosity each week as well as gifts of homemade cake and money from the community. Every week there has been enough to feed everyone, and each time we open the doors we have more people arriving, over 50 the first week and by week three over 100! The original plan was to sit in the grounds, fine for the first week but too hot for weeks one and two, so we set up tables and chairs inside and they were soon filled. We are blessed to have such a large indoor space we can use in this way. People have welcomed the cool of the old building and who knows maybe one week we will have to shelter inside from the rain! There have also been activities for the children, a scavenger hunt, friendship bracelets to make, colouring and I spy. Parents and grandparents enjoy chatting while the youngsters run around and are amused in a safe and friendly Itenvironment.hassurpassed our expectation and we need to say WOW and THANK YOU for turning up and making it such a great community event. We are happy to announce that we are now offering optomap® imaging using the optos eye scanner, which shows us a much wider view of your retina than other imaging devices, in order to provide our patients with the greatest chance of earlier disease detection and treatment. The optomap produces an image that is unique and provides a highresolution 200° image in order to ascertain the health of your retina. This is much wider than a traditional 45° image. We continue to use our SS-OCT scanner which displays features under the retinal surface. Many eye problems can develop without you knowing, in fact, you may not even notice any change in your sight, including macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments. Health problems, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can often be seen with a thorough exam of the retina. Images are saved as a permanent record for your file, which allows our optometrists to look for changes over the years. The optomap is fast, easy, and comfortable for anyone. The entire image process consists of you looking into the device one eye at a time. The optomap images are shown immediately on a computer screen so we can review it with you. . The Deadline for entry is MIDNIGHT on SUNDAY, 4th SEPTEMBER. There will be no entries on the day. The event is open to young cyclists provided they are accompanied by an adult. There are plenty of tips online for anyone riding a sportive for the first time. 60 miles may sound daunting but 30 miles is do-able for someone who is reasonably fit and riding at a comfortable pace. A sportive isn’t a race and the roads have been chosen to avoid traffic and every turning will be well-signed! This year’s Flyer is on mostly quiet roads close to Hadleigh, with some great views and the odd hill. The Club relies on a large team of volunteers who sign and marshal the route and register riders. This year’s sportive has the backing of a host of sponsors and supporters including: The George PH, Crockatt Garage, Sunny Day Cycleworks, East of England Co-op, M Chisnall & Sons, Boxford Bike Club, The Pedal House and Hadleigh Hares. The Club runs a social ride on Sundays usually starting at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. Currently, we’re also running regular rides on Wednesdays (gentle), Thursdays (leg spinner) and Fridays (women). Something for everyone. The rides are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub Twitter @HadleighCycling or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk.

Although it is still Summer we are now working towards our Christmas Program which we will be delivering to Ukraine later this year. In the event we are unable to enter Ukraine for safety reasons we will still travel as far as the Polish Border and then we will be aiming to bring the children out to us but more about that nearer the time. As we are travelling by land we are looking to take urgently required donations with us. Last month we appealed for good quality walking boots or shoes for all ages to help with the coming winter months. The response was amazing and I would like to thank everyone who has given boots and shoes to us, they will be greatly valued in Ukraine. One item that has been requested is especially valuable not only for the need it covers but the fact that being so small and light we can take a huge amount with us so this month we are appealing for VEGETABLE SEEDS. The seeds from the UK are of a far higher quality and produce a far larger crop as they are “fresh” as opposed to those that have been kept from a previous years crop as is usually the case in the villages in Ukraine. For many people even these have been lost and so they are left with nothing to plant for next year. Own produce is greatly relied upon in the villages and in addition they want to grow supplies in special “Victory Gardens” which are used to send food to the troops fighting to save their Country. If you are able to donate to help us please contact Bob Mitchell who lives in Hadleigh and has offered to take donations on our behalf. You can contact him on 01473 823427. Many thanks to all who continue to support us.

Suffolk’s Review of the Recommended Lorry Route Map Suffolk Council has completed the review of its Recommended Lorry Route Map. This map is intended to assist hauliers plan routes that are most appropriate for their journey purposes that limit the negative impact experienced by local communities whilst servicing businesses and other premises. Both Hadleigh TC and Layham PC responded to the lorry route survey citing issues relating to road safety, damage to the highway caused by HGV movements, and frequent contraventions of existing restrictions with respect to the B1070 (yellow). This road is designated as a local access route which passes through the town and is intended to reflect the need for lorries to deliver to business premises. The distribution route on the A1071 (blue) is suitable for these longer distance trips between the A134 and Ipswich.
Local Matters - We are Listening Visit 6th September
I wrote in July’s HCN that due to low passenger numbers, Beestons would be cancelling their 84C bus service making unavailable for post-16 students to access education facilities in Colchester. I am now delighted to report the good news that they were successful in their tender for school route SC713 and have been awarded the contract. Beestons have also stated they will re-register the 84C so that it operates again from September, and is now listed again on the Suffolkonboard bus timetable. Well done to all who were involved in resolving this issue.
I was very saddened to hear news of the fatal road traffic accident involving the collision of two vehicles at the junction of Aldham Road/Lady Lane last 25th June. The perceived hazards associated at this junction had been reported to Suffolk Highways after a previous serious incident late last year. After hearing of this accident, I immediately contacted Suffolk’s Safety Speed and Traffic Management Team to urge them to re-examine and renew as necessary this junction’s layout, road markings, and signage to ensure that there are no further accidents. I am waiting for the Road Safety Speed and Traffic Management Team to respond to this request. I am sure they will be keen to see the police report to determine what were the contributing factors, before committing to review the road layout. As with any accident, there can be many contributing factors other than the condition, or the layout of the road, and they will then consider what improvements will need to be made.

SCC has decided to retain the Gallows Hill – Lady Lane section of B1070 local access route (green) as their assessment demonstrated a demand for local access trips on each of these routes. However, one result of the review is the B1070 is now broken between Layham and Raydon. Hadleigh Quarry Planning Application
The county council has amended the map to make the restrictions on the B1070 clearer to help hauliers appreciate the presence of restrictions and plan routes accordingly. It remains clearly defined for local access, but with Benton Street. Suffolk County Council does not have the powers enforce such on the highway.

From Vicars Son to BBC Producer by Charles Garland - Fidelis ladies enjoyed a delightful journey through a vicars sons life from early age onwards, with many amusing and entertaining stories along the way. A varied and very interesting talk about the variety of jobs which had occurred during his journey which all aided Charles in attaining and acquiring his role as a BBC producer. Not only as a producer but also as author of Painted Angel, a unique and heart warming story which takes the reader to a deeper understanding of human frailty. Our next speaker will be Hawk Honey talking to us about wasps on August 25th. Visitors welcome to the next meeting. We are now accepting new members in our group.

What a day to have a Garden Party! On the hottest day of the year, we held our annual garden party to which we had invited four other WIs. The numbers were, of course, greatly reduced. The Old School in Bridge Street had laid out the garden beautifully but we had to be inside where it was pleasantly cooler, which Matthew had also prepared so welcomingly. We cannot thank him enough for all he did in contributing to the tea party that was enjoyed by all. We meet every third Tuesday in the library seminar room at 7.30pm. In August we will have had David Smith talking about ‘Fingerprints and Crime Scene Examination’. On the 20th September the Rev. David Atkins’ talk is entitled ‘It shouldn't happen to a vicar’, which will be entertaining as always. If you think you might like to join the WI you are welcome to come for a ‘taster’ evening. Contact either Glenn Abbassi the Secretary on 07870 312409 or the President Sheila Webb on 01473 827554 and we will look out for you, or just turn up!

Ronni would benefit so much from an in the ground trampoline, accessible swing or hammock. She would love to be able to garden herself, so raised beds and vegetable plots would be incredible. She also has two bunny rabbits, so it would be lovely to be able to give Ronni an area where she could sit with and pet them. Lots of ideas have been suggested including sensory lighting and seating areas to make life simpler for Ronni as she is now in her teenage years and to encourage her to really get outdoors especially in school holidays.

Stephanie Laing from Chatteris was our July Demonstrator and as you can see from the picture a superb flower arranger and designer, I think we all enjoyed her demo. The evening began with Rev. Jo coming to the meeting to thank members for arranging flowers at St. Mary's Church Flower Festival. Then Chairman Chris Hodge presented a cheque for £600.00 to East Anglian Air Ambulance, the money having been raised at a lunch held earlier in the year. After a restful August, the Flower Club will next meet on Tuesday 13th September with a demonstration by Janet and Jane from the Dengie Hundred flower club. Please do join us at The Hadleigh United Reformed Church, Market Place at 7:00 for 7:30 start.

I’m looking to raise some funds to make our garden accessible for my 14 year old non mobile daughter. Ronni has a rare chromosome disorder called CNTBB1, she is one of 300 in the world. It affects her muscles, so she is a full time wheelchair user. Ronni is very lucky to have two young men in her life, brothers Freddi (11) & Jaxon (5). We live in Hadleigh and are hoping to simplify our garden so she can use both her electric and manual chair to enjoy herself in the outdoors safely in her home environment. Our garden is mostly concrete and dirt which is all sadly uneven. We have lots to break down and sheds to remove….fortunately we have been given fantastic support from local businesses including RAMS landscaping who will be providing the labour free of cost. We are very thankful to Donny and his team for coming forward. We also have the ongoing support of local business woman Barbara who owns the Thrift shop on the High Street who is hoping to help Ronni in achieving the quoted £3000 to achieve the sensory haven she deserves to thrive and grow.

Our August meeting welcomed Cathy Smith, conservation advisor for the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. She gave us ideas on encouraging wildlife into our gardens. Against a lot of our desire for tidy gardens she advised cutting lawns less frequently and allowing parts of the flowerbeds to naturalise, thus encouraging insects and wildlife. These in turn will eat unwanted bugs, so less worry for us gardeners. This dry weather shows no sign of ending and feel we are going to have to adapt the way we garden. Flower beds can benefit from copious amounts of mulch. Convert your garden and kitchen waste to compost. Less lawn and possibly a gravel garden with ideas on plant selection at Beth Chatto’s garden and tips on what will grow in a dry area. Try having as many water butts as possible to capture every drop of rain. Grey water from washing up can be used to water plants but not vegetables. Contents of paddling pools can be used, why not involve the children when emptying and they can help water plants. Finally don’t forget to keep the birdbath topped up, the birds are queuing up to use mine. Next month on September 12th we have Matthew Long from Riverside Bulbs in Monks Eleigh. I am sure he will have lots of bulbs for us to purchase and ideas on planting for next spring. Do join us at 7.30 in the Guildhall £4 guests / £2 members. The competition is 5 runner beans, which may be a problem due to the dry weather... but it’s just for fun so have a go!

Pantry Moth Infestation: A Pantry Moth infestation in Hadleigh has been brought to the attention of the meeting. These are far more virulent than normal fabric moths and spread through households quite quickly. They can be introduced by, inter alia, containers of flour / pasta. Getting rid of them requires quite extensive cleaning regimes but, provided the cleaning is sufficient, they are quite easy to get rid of. Suggest Google (there are other search engines !) for ways to ensure they are dealt with properly.

Can you believe we’ve had our on-site Butchery open for 10 years? It’s an integral part of our business; we couldn’t imagine life without it. Our Butchery is unique in its offerings. Rarely do you find a business where you can track the journey of its produce in so much detail, and one which has the ability to provide its customers with home reared Beef, Lamb, Pork, Goat and Mutton straight from the farm! Here at Hollow Trees Farm, we home rear our animals on our farm. We are involved every step of the way on the journey they take from field to fork. Over the past decade we have learnt how to make this journey the best it can be. Thanks to all the hard work, and knowledge, the quality of our meat is second to none. It’s a result of the minimal food miles and the care taken at each Joinstage.us this September in celebration of our 10-year anniversary of our Farm Butchery. – Anne Boleyn
Coming next from Sudbury Dramatic Society at The Quay Theatre is the September production of Anne Boleyn by Howard Benton. Howard Brenton's play was first performed at Shakespeare's Globe, London, in July 2010, and was named Best New Play at the whatsonstage.com Awards in 2011. A celebration of a great English heroine, Anne Boleyn dramatises the life and legacy of Henry VIII's notorious second wife, who helped change the course of the nation's history. Traditionally seen as either the pawn of an ambitious family manoeuvred into the King's bed or as a predator manipulating her way to power, Anne – and her ghost – are seen in a very different light in this award-winning play. Anne Boleyn is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 6th to Saturday 10th September at 7.45pm, Tickets are available from The Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaysudbury.com or via www.sudburydramatic.com.
Dear Sir, Well done to the eagle eyed of Hadleigh who spotted the deliberate mistake on the information board beside the lime tree stump alongside the Deanery Tower. The Lime Tree Imp thought it a cunning jest to see who would notice that the date Cedric Morris founded his art school at Benton End was out by a century!! Thank you to all who pointed out that the correct date is 1939. It's great to know you are reading the boards and the Lime Tree Imp must do better next time to tease the folk of Hadleigh. Hilary Ferry Dear Sir, This letter goes out to all the lazy, inconsiderate and selfish people who park in the PICK UP POINT at Morrison’s. Here's an idea I came up with - you know those things you can talk into or send a message with, you know, the whole world and it's mother has got one, yes a mobile phone - well, this is what I do. I wait in the Car Park, not the PICK UP POINT and when I get a call from my mother who can’t stand up for too long due to her painful hip and is waiting at the PICK UP POINT to be PICKED UP - all I have to do is drive round to the PICK UP POINT, and pick her up! That's assuming there's not some lazy, inconsiderate and selfish...... Tet Templey
When asked why, a councillor for SCC said they had looked at the “safety and damage to the highway and the evidence does not justify amendments to the recommended lorry route map, particularly given the need to promote a suitable alternative route in the event that an existing route is either downgraded or removed”. It seems that SCC has missed the point. The measure they should have used is whether there is a need for lorries to use the B1070 to access Lady Lane when we have the A1071. Moving forward, the obvious solution would be to improve the signage on the A1071 and the industrial estate to ensure that only those HGV drivers delivering to Hadleigh drive into the town. The question, however, is whether Suffolk County Council can be persuaded to spend the money on appropriate signage.
Dear Sir, Next month will see the start of the Covid/flu vaccinations for certain patient groups. As before, the Patient Participation Group (PPG) will support the clinics with volunteers both inside and outside the Practice. If you wish to join this willing band of helpers please contact me. Volunteer requirements include patience, pleasantly assertive, a thick skin, a sense of humour and the ability to stand for no longer than an hour in all weathers. A clear roster and instructions plus a hi-Vis jacket provided. PPG Chair. Jan Devey, deveys@btinternet.com
Dear Sir, Suffolk County Council (SCC) has voted to retain the B1070 through Hadleigh as a designated lorry route despite Hadleigh residents and the Town Council asking for the designation to be removed. More than 300 people signed a petition and emailed the Town Council (TC) opposing the routing of lorries through the residential streets of Hadleigh unless delivering to the town. At a Full Council Meeting in December last year the TC unanimously voted in favour of the petitioners, with Frank Minns, head of the Council and Mayor at the time, later describing it as “a no-brainer”.

Despite this, when Suffolk County Council reviewed their county lorry route plan last month – something they only do every 10 years – they chose to ignore these details and voted to keep the B1070 as a designated lorry route.
Jenny Hone
For the past 10 years SCC’s old designation has meant that heavy lorries to and from Lady Lane Industrial Estate regularly drive through the residential streets of Lady Lane, Angel St, the High St, Bridge St and Gallows Hill (the B1070) instead of entering and leaving the estate from the A1071 bypass.

As a local resident who lives in Angel Street explains: “These roads weren’t built to take HGVs and the bottom of Angel Street is particularly narrow, so many of the larger lorries that come down the street are forced to do a U-turn in Bradfield Avenue. Where is the sense in that when they could go straight back on to the A1071 from the top of Lady Lane?”

We in Hadleigh certainly have some very remarkable people living and working amongst us, and it was my privilege to help honour one such person. Mary Hartley, known as Major Mary is loved by all that cross her path. Mary achieved the rank of Major whilst serving in the Salvation Army, Mary was first commissioned at the Royal Albert Hall London in 1947 and served for 40 years at home and abroad and even after retiring from the Salvation Army in 1987 Mary could not resist the draw that the Salvation Army had on her, after all she was committed to doing good, so Mary volunteered and took charge of the of the Whatfield Corps. Mary has been awarded for her commitment and compassion on numerous occasions and has done so much in the UK and overseas, so much so that when I was researching Mary I thought that I was looking at three people’s lives.Mary Hartley was nominated for recognition as a Platinum Champion for her outstanding contribution as a volunteer in the year of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Mary was unable to travel to London to receive an official Platinum Champions Pin and a signed certificate from the Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall, so I was asked to do the honours and indeed it was an honour for me to meet this wonderful lady to present the Lyndseyaward.and all of the staff and residents at Waterfield House put on a lovely garden party for the occasion and I was touched by the show of affection that everyone showed towards Major Mary. This month has shown some of the highest temperatures recorded, so just staying cool was a challenge, so think about all of those who had to carry on in the heat, people like our refuse collectors who were making sure that Hadleigh’s bins are not overflowing and by so doing cutting back on probable chances of disease caused by rotting refuse in extreme heat. Other people you see out and about are the volunteers litter picking also keeping Hadleigh clean, so can we do our part by not dropping litter and if you are a dog owner like myself, please clear up after your pet, they can’t we can, so why not, after all we all walk the same streets and breathe the same air so let’s not foul either Noteone. to self: Don’t leave a wax candle in the conservatory during the heat of the day as it makes a mess on the coffee table, and you get in trouble. £450,000 more funding for community causes now available
Cllr Julie Flatman, Mid Suffolk Cabinet Member for Communities, Health and Wellbeing, said: “I’m very excited to see the applications made for our new Community Development Grants. We know how much pride our people take in their communities and how much of a difference this funding can make to their projects. Whether they want to invest in new electric vehicle charging points, expand a community coffee morning, or run an after-school club, this grant will be a fantastic boost for any group.”
Each application is eligible for an award of up to £20,000, with £250,000 available in Mid Suffolk and £200,000 in Babergh. Groups can only make one application, but applicants can still apply for other community grant schemes for the same project. This announcement is in addition to the new £150,000 Suffolk Climate Action Community Match Fund, available to groups in Babergh and Mid Suffolk with projects supporting the county’s vision to become carbon neutral by 2030.
Babergh and Mid Suffolk community groups can now bid for a share of £450,000 to improve their neighbourhoods, thanks to the two new Community Development Grants. Projects such as including new play areas and equipment, protecting or enhancing our natural environment, provision of cultural experiences, improving digital access, reducing social isolation and supporting renewable or net-zero energy projects are all eligible to be supported by the new funds.
Cllr Mary McLaren, Babergh Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “This is a great opportunity for organisations and community groups to secure additional funding and resources at a time when it is needed most. Babergh is filled with passionate people with great ideas. They bring people together and give them a new opportunity to have an impact in the places they live. We want to see these ideas come to fruition, so ensuring there are a variety of schemes and grants available is key to supporting innovation in our district.”

As we go to press in time for the September magazines, the great heatwave is still upon us. The land looks like something from the middle East, but, being clay, it’s as hard as concrete and our farming friends are extremely worried. My live colleagues are hot and hungry. They are grateful to the horse care team for their attention over the holidays, and to the maintenance team for keeping the centre in good shape. The triannual Shelley ball was eventually held on July 15th at The Talbooth in Stratford St Mary.144 tickets were sold and through their generosity the guests raised over £15,000 for the Centre. I’m told it was a wonderful evening; a singer on the lawn entertained the guests before dinner and a great band kept everyone dancing all night. You would never know just how much hard graft went in to making the event so successful. The movers and shakers behind the enterprise are pictured here.
From left to right: Lyn Bensusan (stable manager), Chris Southgate (fund raising committee Treasurer), Jan McKillop (chairman of the fund raising committee) and Jan Derbyshire (Chairman and ball organiser par excellence). Naturally all four hold down other jobs to do with the running of the Centre, and we horses are so grateful to them. Things are a bit quiet at the Centre in August, but we shall pick up sped after the school holidays finish. Our next fundraiser is on November 26th at Hadleigh football club it’s our Christmas Bingo: tickets £10.00. Details will be on the webpage when all is decided. I’m hoping that when you read this, we shall all be very wet! Here’s mud in your eye dear friends. Website: shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172

The following are the main matters discussed during the Parish Council meeting of 22 June 2022. Public Forum A parishioner raised the following points: More traffic was using Water Lane, designated a Quiet Lane; however, there was no QL sign at the top of the lane. Cllr Woods said the post installed by SCC was too high; the QL team was aware of this and would rectify it. In the meantime the sign would be installed as soon as possible. The Chairman commented that designating Water Lane a Quiet Lane would not necessarily solve the problem of increased traffic. There was concern over several large garden bonfires at a property in Upper Street, causing unacceptable smoke pollution and adding to the risk of fires in the current dry and hot weather conditions; Cllr Ward would report this to Environmental Health. County Council report SCC had objected to the National Grid’s proposals for the East Anglia GREEN pylon run. Extra funding had been agreed by Cabinet for the second phase of the five-year project for the creation of more SEND places for children and young people. District Council report Plans to revitalise the Hamilton Road Quarter in Sudbury, and the initiative to bring new workspaces to Hadleigh had both been approved by Cabinet. The latest report from CIFCO (Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s commercial property company) had been due to go before the councils’ joint overview and scrutiny committee in July but this had been postponed to September; the report was on the Mid Suffolk and Babergh websites had also been sent to Companies House. Broken marker post The Clerk had contacted the Fire Service to ask them to either repair or remove the marker post at the junction of Mill Land and Watermill Close (*it was subsequently confirmed that the post had been replaced).

Parish trees, hedgerows and wildflowers scheme Cllr Roberts’ report on the 2022 scheme launched by Babergh and Mid Suffolk DCs was noted. The scheme offered free trees hedgerow plants and wildflower seed mixes to all parishes, but required the land to have public access. Cllr Roberts suggested part of the churchyard might be turned into a wildflower area; she would talk to the PCC.

Cllr Woods would take this forward with the Playing Field Committee.
The deadline for applications is 5th September 2022. www.layham.org
An application form and more details are available from Sue Dodson or can be downloaded from the Layham Parish Council Website, in the section ‘Queens Platinum Jubilee’.
Our next Layham event will be a Festive Fayre to be held in the Village Hall later in the year.
The noticeboard at the top of Mill Lane had been refurbished. The working group would bring a recommendation to the August meeting concerning a replacement noticeboard for the Playing Field. B1070 pavement Cllr Ward would look into funding from the Community Development Grant and would speak to Babergh’s Grants Officer. Cllr Hall confirmed that Layham was on the list for funding from the Highways Investment Fund, but the anticipated cost, based on widening the pavement, would exceed the limit. Cllr Woods said the pavement was actually the correct width, but the bank had slipped. Cllr Hall would arrange a site meeting.

About tea-time on Friday 12 August flames were spotted in the Nature Area at the end of the Playing Field. They had taken root in one of the large piles of logs left to rot down after the felling of the cricket bat willows. The fire service was called and the local fire engine was on site within 20 minutes.

The flames spread to a second, then a third, and a fourth pile of logs and the fire-crew concentrated on containing the blazes. They soon called for a second appliance and together they stopped the fire spreading within about an hour. The next hour and a half was spent ensuring there were no embers left smouldering. It was lucky that the breeze was blowing from the Brett Green direction – had the breeze been in the opposite direction there would have been great concern for the homes jut the other side of the boundary hedge. So how did the fire start? The only clue is the remnant of a small recently used hand- built fire near the seat beside the river. Whoever lit that may have been responsible for transferring flames to one of the log piles. We have a shared responsibility for our playing field and nature area. If you ever see a hint of fire or use of a portable barbecue please ask those involved to douse the embers immediately. Thank you. We hope you all had a lovely summer, and you are fully refreshed for the start of a new school year. Paddy has a healthy appetite and still enjoys a game of ball, a walk, a good cuddle, and life in general. At the moment all he needs is one pill twice a day popped in his food. Update the 40th anniversary of the founding of the u3a following the model of the original French u3a a small band of enthusiasts got together to launch a British well over 1,000 u3a’s and more than 430,000 Although they all conform generally to a common each u3a is autonomous and shapes itself to its members interests. Hadleigh our u3a was set up in 2000, when a lady by the name of Joan Pitcher moved here and was disappointed to find we did not have a u3a, so she decided to do something about it. A small advertisement was placed to test local interest. Expecting a handful of people to come to her house for a cup of tea and a chat, she was amazed to find the response was so overwhelming that she had to hire a hall. By the end of that meeting they had formed an organising committee and in no time adopted a formal constitution and the rest is history. Don’t know about the u3a? If you are longer in full-time employment and looking for something interesting to expand your retirement horizons, then read on. We have no political or religious affiliations and there are no qualifications required. We are not an academic institution expecting our members to study formally or sit examinations. We are all retired and had quite enough of that kind of stress earlier in our lives! Now we want to make new friends and interests.
organisation,
Membership is open to both men and women and, apart from being friendly and relaxed, our objective is to encompass a wide range of opportunities to come together to enjoy exploring new ideas, subjects and activities together. We hold a meeting for all members once a month, with a professional speaker and the chance to chat over tea at the end. We have over twenty special interest groups covering a wide range of subjects from social history to art, current affairs to nature watching, lunch groups and much more. Another significant aspect of our activities are our regular outings to the theatre and places of interest, all charged at cost. Transport is by coach for the bigger trips or car-share for smaller events nearer to home. We have a Christmas lunch at Hintlesham Hall and a summer party at Hadleigh Guildhall.
Membership here in Hadleigh is £15 per year. All members also receive a quarterly national magazine called Third Age Matters, full of interesting articles and what other u3a’s are doing around the country. Useful for inspiration for expanding our own activities! Have a look at our website for more information and pictures at www.u3asites.org.uk/hadleigh suffolk. Our walk on Saturday 10th Sept will start and end at Bures. The walk is quite a long one but well worth the effort. Called locally “The Dragon Walk”, it is one of our favourites. Our route from Bures will be Fysh House Farm, Highfields Farm, Dead Lane Track to Farthing Hall, the St Edmunds Way to Wissington and back to Bures on the Stour Valley Path via Wormingford. The route is about 10 miles and we will take it easy to admire the views. We will have two stops so we suggest you bring a small snack and definitely something to drink if the weather looks like being hot. The walk will take around 4 ½ hours so we should be back at the cars by around 2pm. We will meet at 0930 in the Bures village hall car park on Nayland Road, which is a sharp left turn where High Street becomes Bridge Street. The car park is a short distance down Nayland Road on the RHS. Email me for a map. If anyone needs a lift from Hadleigh please email me and I’ll try my best to put you in touch with a driver. If there are any changes to the route following our recce they will be put up on the website. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 07483 887658.
The cost of energy and food is so high now. With the kids home from school for the summer, I’m having to pay more for lunches and snacks. I’m worried about how I’ll put food on the table. I’m on a prepayment meter and I’m really scared we’re going to be left without any gas or electric if I can’t top up. What can I do?
First of all, I’m really sorry to hear how tough things have been for you. You’re doing the right thing in reaching out for support and there are things you can get help with. As a prepayment meter customer, your energy supplier will be able to give you temporary credit if you can’t afford to top up your meter. They might add this to your meter automatically, but if they don’t, you can call them and ask them to do this. If you run out of temporary credit, speak to your supplier to explain your situation. They may give you extra temporary credit if you’re struggling with living costs. There are other reasons why they might give you extra credit too, including if you’re disabled, have a long-term health condition, or you have children under the age of 5. You’ll have to pay back anything extra you get, but you can agree how to do this in a way you can afford with your supplier. As you say, the cost of living is really high but there is help available. If you pay council tax and you’re in bands A-D, you should get a payment of £150 automatically. It could take until the end of September, but if you've not had it already you might need to make a claim. You can check how to do this on your council's website. You might also be able to get a fuel voucher, which you can use to add credit to your meter. Contact your local council about this. There’s more government support coming from October, including a £400 payment to help you with your energy bills. If you have a prepayment meter, you’ll be given vouchers in the first week of each month from October, via SMS text, email, or post. Make sure your energy company has your up-todate details. To help manage other costs, it’s also worth checking you’re getting all the benefits you’re entitled to. There are benefits calculators you can use online. On the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk there’s advice on how to reduce living costs and information on other ways to increase your Theincome.school holidays can be a really tough time and we know the food shop isn’t stretching as far. Contact your local council, to find out what extra support you can get over the holidays. If you can’t afford to buy food, Sudbury and District Citizens Advice can help you get a referral for a food bank. We know this is an extremely worrying time and everyone’s situation is different. Don’t struggle alone. If you need further support, contact Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. “Everyone is asking for volunteers nowadays! I like the idea but I have some questions...” How will I be helping? Whether you are visiting a family at their home, or helping at one of our family, perinatal or SEND (special educational needs) groups, you will be giving real, practical support and encouragement to families, so that they can provide a strong foundation for their childs’ future. This support is needed now more than ever and is crucial in helping families to cope, develop resilience and stay positive through perhaps the most challenging time in their lives. Does it really make a difference? Absolutely! We are currently supporting 661 families across Suffolk through our home-visiting and groups. Here are some genuine quotes from parents/carers we have supported: ·It’s a chance to get out of the house and to also meet and talk to other people. It helps with loneliness.
Hadleigh Hares Road Races
of it,
Following the successful return of our annual road races in November 2021, Hadleigh Hares are delighted to be hosting the John Chisnall Hadleigh 5, the Turners Blinds and Shutters Hadleigh 10, and the Plant Parts 2km Junior Fun Run, on Sunday 20th November 2022. Starting at Hadleigh Football Club, races follow roads through Layham and Shelley. Finishers will receive a beautiful, bespoke medal, and after some adjustments in 2021, we are happy to say that 2022 will also see the return of our usual facilities, including bag drop, changing facilities, refreshments, and prize giving ceremonies. The event is made possible with kind sponsorship from M Chisnall and Sons Limited, Turners Blinds and Shutters and Plant Parts Ltd. In addition to the generous support of our sponsors we rely heavily upon volunteers to make the race possible. Helping with set up on the day, distributing race packs to competitors, manning the bag drop, and marshalling out on the course, without our volunteers it simply would not be possible to hold the event. If you are willing to volunteer on race day we would be delighted to hear from you. No previous experience of marshalling is required as you will be fully briefed in advance of the races. Please e-mail races@hadleigh-hares.co.uk if you are able to support us. The organisers look forward to welcoming all participants and volunteers to another successful and fun filled day. Entries will open online on Saturday 27th August, for more information visit our club website www.hadleigh-hares.co.uk

·My volunteer listened. She was someone to talk to, and she supported me through several stressful times and encouraged me to achieve my goals.
·My volunteer was someone to listen, talk to, help with the children, with issues. She built my confidence and self-esteem and supported us through the tough times. What skills will I learn or develop? We would love you to utilise any skills you already have. For groups and home visiting, these can be everday skills such as budgeting, cooking, arts & crafts, or simply encouraging conversation with an adult or encouraging play with a child. We are a learning organisation, so we hold ongoing training for our volunteers in areas such as first aid, customer service, or in special project Herework. is a quote illustrating this from one of our volunteers: “Volunteering provides a fantastic opportunity to expand my skills at the same time as feeling valued in my local community. Combining this with increased social interaction and physical activity helps me to gain self-confidence and feel appreciated.” What training do I need? Full training is given to all of our volunteers. You’ll gain confidence, meet new people, learn new skills, and gain a great deal of personal satisfaction, knowing you are making a difference. Group volunteers are asked to attend a half day Zoom course (next course takes place via Zoom on Monday 12th September, 9.30am to 11am). Home-visiting volunteers are required to attend a 7 session training course (1 per week). The next course starts on Tuesday 13th September and will be held in Bramford, just outside Ipswich, which has easy access from A14 and A12. Sounds great! I’d like to find out more. What do I do next? Please email info@familiestogethersuffolk.org.uk or call 01379 678552 for more information. There is a simple on-line form to fill in, we ask for 2 references and we also do a DBS check for home visiting and group volunteers. Come and join our friendly team and help us to bring community back into the heart of parenting.

The workshops, which are held virtually, have been running since July 2021 and will be available until November 2022. The courses are totally free and are open to all businesses in the districts who want help to develop online skills and to get the most out of digital opportunities.
We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those who ask, we try to give advice, guidance and constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group. Unfortunately, Covid still lurks nearby and so we ask you not to join us if you have, or have been in contact with someone who has Covid. We will welcome you once you are clear. We charge £3 per session to the cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free, so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5 and are due in May. We produce a list of weekly topics and these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current week’s) while others will be working on their own subject. Feel free to choose. Cllr Harry Richardson, Mid Suffolk District Council deputy leader and cabinet member for economic growth, said: “The business landscape is always evolving, and it is important that businesses of all sizes take advantage of the benefits of digital solutions. Whether it is keeping up to date with GDPR regulations or developing a targeted digital campaign, the Digital Skills Programme could really help businesses to grow and innovate.”
Business owners in Babergh and Mid Suffolk can take advantage of free workshops to help boost their confidence online by accessing the Councils’ Digital Skills Programme. The free workshops are held online by experts from MENTA and topics include digital communications, digital transactions & e-commerce and the ‘dos and don’ts’ of information management. The Digital Skills Programme is part of Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils post-covid recovery strategy and is funded by the Suffolk Inclusive Growth Investment Fund (SIGIF).
Councillor John Ward, Babergh District Council leader and cabinet member for economic growth said: “The feedback from businesses who have taken part in the Digital Skills Programme since its launch has been really positive. The workshops provide practical tips and advice for businesses to develop their digital approach and stay ahead of their competitors.”
As well as the digital skills workshops there is also free one-to-one mentoring available to help with specific digital challenges such as online promotion, ecommerce and online security.

The discretionary element of the Council Tax Energy Rebate is open to people in different council tax bands who may be paying rent and energy bills but are not liable for council tax such as those in a house of multiple occupation (HMO), those in receipt of Universal Credit or Housing Benefit, those in receipt of Council Tax Reduction, or other exceptions.
Residents can apply to pay less council tax through the Council Tax Reduction housing benefit. Using the councils’ online calculator, they can find out whether they would be entitled to a 95% reduction in their council tax bill.
These steps are in addition to the national schemes already introduced and coming into effect this winter. The widest reaching of these is the £400 energy bills support payment; this replaced the previous £200 payment announced and will not have to be repaid. The payment will be split over six months and paid to all households with a domestic electricity meter, starting from October 2022. Those with pre-payment meters will have the money applied to their meter or paid via a voucher. Additionally, there is:
·. A £300 pensioner cost of living payment. All pensioner households will receive this as a top-up to their annual winter fuel payment in November/December 2022, and in addition to the payment above
Applications for this funding close on 4 September 2022, so the council is encouraging anyone struggling to check if they are eligible and apply.

How your council can help you with the cost of living Support packages to combat the cost bills council are all available through Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, with staff here to direct residents to the help they are entitled to.
· A £650 cost of living payment. Paid directly into claimant bank accounts by DWP, it is split into two payments (paid in July and October) for households in receipt of universal credit, income-based jobseekers’ allowance, incomerelated employment and support allowance, income support, working tax credits, child tax credit or pension credit
· A £150 disability cost of living payment. This is a direct payment in September for those receiving disability living allowance, person independence payment, constant attendance allowance or war pension mobility supplement.

Many schemes and rebates have been announced in 2022 to ease the financial burden on people across the UK as well as in our districts. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are urging residents to check they are receiving the support they are entitled to, including the funds below.
There is also the Household Support Fund (HSF), a £170,000 pot split between both councils, which is available to help meet the cost of many household expenses. Those in financial hardship can get help paying for food and essential household goods, including school uniforms, equipment, and household energy bills.
Cllr John Ward, leader of Babergh District Council, said: “We know how tight things are for people right now – and household budgets are set to be squeezed further over coming months. We are here to help our residents and communities and want to ensure people understand the range of support available and how to access it. Combating the cost of living is one of our top priorities, so I urge anyone who thinks they may be entitled to this help to check our website for more information.”

To help with the rising cost of energy bills, the Council Tax Energy Rebate provides a £150 payment which is not repayable, to households in bands AD. Payments have already been made to more than 66,000 households in these bands, with arrangements being made for the remaining recipients. The scheme has now been expanded and the discretionary scheme will offer up to £150 to those people not eligible for the main scheme but in need of financial help to cover the cost of energy bills.
What to expect: A group of like-minded mums chatting over tasty food, specialist coffee and sometimes even wine. The Mum Club's mission is to create an entertaining experience where everyone feels included. Come by yourself or with friends, and of course bring your babies. And get this! Some of our events have a babysitter on hand, ready to scoop up crying kids, so Mums can actually finish a meal. Our hope is that everyone who comes leaves with a warm fuzzy feeling, new friends and maybe even a TMC goodie or two. When is the next event?
"Good Mum friends are essential when you have a baby, but sometimes it's hard to find them", say The Mum Club founders Lauren Webber and Jessica Lawes. "The reason we created The Mum Club was that after we had children, we'd go to baby classes, and while they were entertaining for the children, we'd leave having spoken to no one and feeling emptier in a way. This experience drove us to create The Mum Club because we didn't want anyone to ever feel like that". A whopping 89% of Mums revealed they felt lonely at least once since giving birth!
Calling all Mums of South Suffolk, it's time to mark some exciting dates in your diary! And no, it's not another baby focused group!

Terence the Terrier is 2000 years old Christened Terrence by the Archaeological excavation team of Long Melford Heritage Trust, the skull of a dog was recently found during an archaeological excavation in the village. Confirmed to be of a terrier like breed by a local veterinary surgeon, it was recovered from the foundations of a rare Iron Age Building along with fine Gallo Belgic pottery. As dogs held a special place in the ritual and iconography of Iron Age and Roman Britain its placement could be of special significance. The excavation was carried out by the Long Melford Heritage Trust Archaeological Team in collaboration with the Stour Valley Community Archaeology Group during July at the Long Melford Football Ground. It followed a Community Archaeological Dig by Michael Wood for the BBC Series “The Great British Story” in 2011 and at which time the program presenter Dr Carenza Lewis identified in a test pit at the football ground what was thought to be a possible ancient building. During the month-long excavation seventy-seven children from the Long Melford church off England Primary School visited the Heritage Trust Museum voting for their favourite exhibits followed by a site visit where they were encouraged to sieve and identify artifacts.

The newly formed Heritage Trust with generous help from Long Melford Parish Council recently commissioned an archaeological geophysical survey of both Cricket and Football Pitches. The results proved tantalizing, indicating the presence of previously unknown roads and features, in addition confirming recent archaeological work conducted by the group. Meanwhile the Long Melford Heritage Trust have launched a new website covering all aspects of the history and heritage of Long Melford. This can be found at melfordheritage.org.uk
