HFAA thank you for your support!

The Hadleigh Show and Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association firstly would like to thank the town and surrounding area for such wonderful support for our return to the show 2022. We had such a lovely day, with smiling faces throughout and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect for us, we truly hope you enjoyed the day as much as we all did. As many are unaware, the objective of the Hadleigh Farmers Association is to be able to support local charities and over the pandemic years we were able to continue this, on a lower scale, by using our reserves with our core charities supported throughout the pandemic during their most difficult times. This year - following a huge effort by our committees and organisers, all of whom are volunteers - we are able to more than triple our donations to local charities.

The Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association have donated £25,000 to the following charities:Hadleigh Elderly People's Christmas Appeal, Hadleigh Sea Scouts, The Porch Project, Hadleigh, Suffolk Young Farmers, Brett Valley, Gipping Valley and Hadleigh Young Farmers, Royal Agricultural Benevolent Association, Farm Community Network, YANA - You are Not Alone, The Rural Coffee Caravan, SERV - Blood Runners, SARS - Suffolk Accident Rescue Service, Dementia UK, Ipswich Hospital Childrens Ward, St Elizabeth Hospice, Suffolk Community Foundation and East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Once again, huge thanks to all who supported us in our return and we are already planning for 2023. Save the date as Saturday 20th May 2023 at the beautiful Holbecks Park. Tickets will be on sale in Keith Avis from 1st December for those wishing to buy them as Christmas gifts.

Mayors Monthly

As Hadleigh’s Mayor for this year I’ve had to participate in certain events which have been scheduled for some time, the Queens Platinum Jubilee, Armed Forces week and a number of other civic ceremonies. The one thing I was not expecting was the death of our beloved Queen. I was on holiday when the Town Clerk contacted me to say that the Queen was ill and that her family were on their way to join her at Balmoral, well there was no other option for me than to pack and come back to Hadleigh.

On the Queens death civic leaders have certain duties to carry out, I say duties but I did not see this as a duty, after all this was our Queen and she has been in my life for ever, she was always in our home on Christmas Day and Christmas dinner was not enjoyed until after we all heard her speak. When Dad took us all to the cinema we never left until we had all stood up for the national anthem. When this country or her family had problems she was always there as a steadying rock, I would just like to correct myself, I said this country or her family, I truly believe that to the Queen this country was her family, so to me it was not a duty but a privilege to honour her life in this towns grief.

Of course when one Monarch passes then another must accede to the throne, and so it was that our Prince was now our King, and proclamations must be read throughout the land, and that was again the responsibility of civic leaders around the country. I attended Ipswich as Hadleigh’s Mayor to not only hear the proclamation of the new King but to receive a scroll which is unique to our town, this scroll had to be read out by myself in our Market Square at an appointed time to the residents of Hadleigh proclaiming our new King. At the appointed time I was truly moved by the amount of Hadleigh residents who attended the reading and then attended St Mary’s for a short service afterwards.

On the day of the Queens funeral a 2 minute silence was to be held around the country as a mark of respect, most of you paid that respect in your own homes whilst watching the funeral, but a few of you attended a small gathering in the Market Square to pay your respects to our Queen with me and I could feel the warmth of emotion for our departed Queen from those who attended. What you have just read is what your Mayor did during this time, but what I would like you to know is that without a support team making sure that I was in the right place at the right time wearing the right attire, reading the correct script this could well have been very different, this is true up and down the country, in small parishes, towns big and small and also cities on differing scales. Plans have been in place for years for the passing of our Queen, but you don’t expect them to be implemented on your watch, and when it does happen you are just glad that you had a team around you that was paying attention.

Thank you Buster and Daryl

The Hadleigh Branch of the Royal British Legion would like to thank Buster and Daryl Alexander who ran this years London Marathon to raise funds for the Royal British Legion. The father and son team ran the 26 miles together and raised an incredible £4,000. Thanks also go to mum and sisters, Tracey, Tara & Jasmin who supported the boys every step of the way.

Plan for the future, protect your interests and preserve your wealth

Property Life Interest Trust Wills are becoming increasingly popular among couples due to the desire to preserve family assets for younger generations. But many are not familiar with these types of Wills or realise their benefit until speaking with a solicitor.

Property Life Interest Trust Wills can be of particular benefit to couples considering planning for future care and preservation of assets. Specialist advice on Property Life Interest Trust Wills can provide for both protecting the financial position and living arrangements of the surviving spouse, as well as protecting assets for future generations. For couples with children from a previous relationship, Property Life Interest Trust Wills can also prove an effective legal solution.

Taking advice and making early decisions to plan effectively It is often the case that a couple’s main asset is their family home, and many are conscious of this when considering planning their estate and inheritance for their loved ones. However, many couples can limit their ability to effectively plan and preserve their estate, or limit their available options for this, if planning their estate is left too late. This is certainly the case in respect of how their home will be treated upon death. The earlier advice is sought, the better in this regard.

How your property is owned is important Property can be held jointly in one of two ways. Property held as “Joint Tenants” will pass automatically to the surviving owner under survivorship rules whereas, property held as “Tenants in Common” will pass under the terms of a Will. For couples to effectively plan their estate, it is often necessary for their main residence to be owned as Tenants in Common, providing each with a % share ownership which can be directed into a Trust upon death.

What is a Property Life Interest Trust Will and what does it do? A solicitor is able to re-organise a couple's ownership of a property alongside preparing a Will for you, so as to ring fence each individual's property share in a Trust for future generations and identified beneficiaries. The surviving spouse/partner is protected by having a lifetime right of residence in the property and can be one of the trustees (managers) of the Trust. Therefore, the gift of your respective share in your principal residence at death is made to your trustees on trust and is subject to the surviving spouse/partner's right to live in the property for their lifetime. The Trust can be flexible in that the surviving spouse/partner will be able to move to another property using all or part of the value of the property. Any surplus capital not used in the purchase of a new property can be invested and the income can be paid to the surviving spouse/partner for their lifetime. The surviving spouse or partner can decide to make gifts to the family if they do not need the surplus capital or income.

Property Life Interest Trust Wills are very flexible, with the surviving spouse/partner even able to rent out the property and receive the rental income.

These types of Wills and arrangements can often be recommended where couples (married or unmarried) wish to plan for future care and preservation of assets for future generations and/or provide for children from a previous relationship, whilst at the same time providing security and peace of mind to the surviving spouse/partner.

Speak to an expert from Holmes & Hills Solicitors

It is always a good idea to take advice when thinking about planning for the future, planning your estate and planning for care. When considering whether Life Interest Trust Wills are appropriate for your circumstances and wishes, your solicitor will also consider your Inheritance Tax position. As mentioned, it is advisable to seek advice sooner rather than later to ensure all legal solutions and options remain available to you.

For expert advice on planning for the future, contact Holmes & Hills on 01787 275275 or email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk to speak with one of our specialists from your local Holmes & Hills office.

“Darkness and light are both alike” – Art Exhibition

Maiden art show by The Very Revd Jo Delfgou, including many bodyform pictures in striking black and white strokes, capturing the beauty of the female body.

Father Jo often discusses the art of creation with Chattisham artist Cris Coe, and she makes a return visit to Hadleigh Old School gallery presenting her most recent work alongside that of the Dean.

Father Jo speaks about the inspiration for his work: “In an attempt to encourage my older son during his Art A level, I found some chalks I had been given as a present a few years before. Inspired by the beauty of the female form and the way shadow and light work together to create form, I found an excitement in drawing. Moving to Hadleigh and to the Deanery four years ago allowed me to have an attic room that could be left ready for “art”. And the encouragement of other local artists and art lovers has seen my desire to draw grow. The images are all chalk on black or white paper and focus on “dark and light” creating form together. Likewise, some of the images present a darkness that is often ignored. The title of the exhibition is a line from a Psalm – that part of holy writing that is very honest and points out the complexity of being human!” Examples of Father Jo’s work can be seen in our accompanying advertisement – as well as studies of humanity, he has also produced landscapes and floral works, with pictures available in a range of sizes and at affordable prices.

Special Preview at 7pm on Friday 18th November – please email hadleigholdschool@gmail.com to attend. Then free public entry 10am-5pm Saturday 19th November and 11am-4pm Sunday 20th November.

Book Review: John’s Jottings

A5 paperback, 72 pages, 24 illustrations and 2 family trees. John Bloomfield (1933-2014) will be remembered by many of the town’s inhabitants and beyond: as a county councillor; as an expert on medieval timber-framed buildings; as a heritage champion; as defender of Hadleigh when threatened by Tesco; and for his involvement in many other activities. However, the jottings refer to John’s younger days and to memories recorded by his mother.

Alice Bloomfield nee Fairhead (1901-1986) recalls her Norfolk childhood and her arrival at Hadleigh in 1923 as parlour maid and then lady’s maid at Holbecks, the home of Sir Joshua Rowley and his family. She married Chevalier ‘Val’ Bloomfield, a son of the Hadleigh baking family, and settled in the town, where both she and her husband eventually became district councillors. Both mother and son died before completing the tasks they had set themselves so John’s recollections cover growing up in Hadleigh before, during and after World War Two (1939-1945) as well as national service in the Royal Air Force. The RAF became his life and when Squadron Leader Bloomfield retired, he returned to Hadleigh, the town that he loved. John writes about town characters, his dog Charlie and pranks from his early days, family connections with people in the town and events both personal and public that mark the passing of the years. His time as a choir boy at St Mary’s Church; as a pupil at Bridge Street School; as a patron at the Palace Cinema; as a trespasser at the railway station are all related in a very engaging style. For example, a boy’s view of Hadleigh in war time is introduced by describing his dilemma on seeing a Heinkel 111. Is he to obey his mother and lie down for safety and in so doing spoil his new trousers and miss seeing the aircraft manoeuvring to drop its bombs over the town?

Patricia Bloomfield, John’s widow, has published this slim volume as a fundraising venture for The Friends of St Mary’s Church and although these life stories are incomplete, this book makes an interesting read for all ages, especially for youngsters wanting to know about Hadleigh just a few decades ago. Books of Hadleigh memoirs are few and far between, therefore John’s Jottings is a much-welcome contribution to the town’s history and should have a place on every Hadleigh bookshelf.

FUELing the local community

As prices skyrocket left, right and centre, we are very thankful that Robert took the chance to stock up on fuel during the warmer months, and secure us summer prices. Many thought he was mad, when a big lorry turned up full of wood and coal during the heatwave!

However, much to our joy, his risky decision has paid off, and we are able to provide a good stock of kiln dried logs, kindling, ecoal, smokeless coal and heat logs as the weather begins to turn chillier.

We’re lucky we are able to pass this low price on to you, our customers, especially in these unpredictable, and difficult times. To see our full sensibly priced fuel election, visit our Farm Shop.

Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat. Only two more chancellors until Christmas. Here we are in November and time has flown. Did you know we have had a different chancellor each month from July to October. If your one who like a little flutter, what were the odds on that? While the last man in, Mr. Jeremy Hunt, has made sweeping changes to the previous mini budget so we small businesses will have to wait and see what the future holds. We know that energy costs are rising and increased significantly again in October and delivery costs have risen too. We are doing our utmost here at the pub to keep our prices competitive and have extended our ‘Early Bird’ drinks promotion to include lunch times too. You can now enjoy discounted cask ales, lagers, Guinness and house wines from 12 noon to 2pm and 5pm to 7pm Monday to Friday. Our double up promotion runs all day every day and lets you increase your favorite spirit from a single shot to a double shot for only £1.50 extra. If you missed the Deben Hop ale in October you can try Brandeston Gold in November. Brewed locally by Earl Soham brewery, the barley is locally grown too. It’s so refreshing, you might want a second, or even a third. Please drink responsibly.

Anyway, the good news is the Dixon Dart League winter season has already started in mid-October. The summer champions were of course the Cock Inn’s Dawsey’s Jets who won the league by the narrowest of margins. There are three teams in the winter league based at The Cock Inn, The Kraken, Cock Rebels and Dawsey’s Jets. For those not aware, The Jets as they were previously known renamed their team a few years ago following the tragic passing of one of their team members, Paul Dawes. Paul was a great lad and is sadly missed by all. Each year there is a dart tournament played at The British Legion in memory of Paul. It was held last month and very well attended. The tournament raised over £250 for their Sepsis charity. A big thank you to all that played and supported the event. Good luck to all the teams involved which included in this years winter league, The Hadleigh Legion and The George of course.

For football fans this November is a strange month. The Premiership and Championship leagues will be suspended from 13th of the month as a consequence of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Fulham host Man Utd in the final game prior to the break on Sunday 13th at 4.30pm. Both leagues will resume on Boxing Day and they will play through until May 2023. The World Cup kicks off on the 20th November. The hosts, Qatar will play Ecuador at 4pm. The following day the group matches begin with England playing Iran at 1pm and Wales who are also in Group ‘B’ along with England, entertain the USA. On the 25th November Wales will play Iran at 1pm and England will play the USA at 7pm. The final group game will see Wales v England on the 29th with a KO time of 7pm. Qualifiers will move to the next stage to be played throughout December with the final on December the 18th. You can watch all the televised games at The Cock Inn and we are able to show three different matches at the same time. We also have a giant screen in the lounge bar which we use for big events.

There is the Rugby Union Autumn Nations round of rugby too starting with Scotland playing Australia on Sat 29th October, Wales play the All Blacks on Sat 5th November and England meet a much improved Argentina on Sunday the 6th. England others matches include an encounter with Japan on Sat 12th, the All Blacks on Sat 19th and finally South Africa on Sat 26th. There is a showcase match too as the Barbarians will face an All Blacks XV on Sunday 13th.

Don’t forget there are a few F1 Grand Prix’s remaining in 2022. The Mexican GP is on 30th October followed by the Brazilian GP on 13th November with the final GP of 2022 being staged in Abu Dhabi on the 20th November. While we already know who the champion driver is, its still an exciting sport to watch. Live music this month includes the great Words & Music Duo, a great four piece band called Buzz play your favourite tunes from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, soloist Dave Cass and of course don’t miss the super duper band The Kicks, playing their 2022 ultimate gig here at The Cock Inn on Saturday 12th. Arrive early, it’s a very busy night. Looks us up on Facebook for details of dates and times.

Christmas approaching at ZOR

Christmas is fast approaching, and customers are starting to buy loads of wonderful gifts, therefore here at Zor Boutique we are stocked up with a wide range of items suitable for giving as presents.

Our gift range this year includes gloves, scarves, hats, perfume, jewellery and much much more, keeping all these items under £20 which makes them perfect for stocking fillers. One of the best sellers from the list above is our stunning chunky scarves. This year we have opted for bees, robins, hearts and stars. Another great seller for Christmas has to be our Sterling Silver Reeves & Reeves jewellery. These pieces are simply stylish featuring dainty necklaces, hoops and stud earrings. Our customers love these as they come in the signature green & grey Reeves & Reeves gift box. My favourite is the gorgeous daisy necklace featuring a gold vermeil centre- what’s not to love. We have also been busy receiving many new jumpers. My favourite has to be the pink ribbed high neck detail jumper as these are super soft to touch and can easily be worn with jeans for a casual look, or they can be dressed up by adding a statement necklace. We would like to say a massive thank you to all of our customers that have supported us over the last 8 years, it has been lovely to see so many friendly faces. Here’s to many more years ahead. 07969 525859 www.zoronline.com zoronline.sales@gmail.com

Hadleigh During World War One

SMALL TOWN DUTY Tales of Hadleigh’s Great War

Book Launch on 11th Nov 7pm at the Old School, Bridge St Sales desk also open Sat 12th Nov 10am to 1pm.

This book has been inspired by folk I remember in my childhood in Hadleigh; men who had served in the trenches of the Great War 1914-1918. The research is a continuation of the Royal British Legion’s Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project. The Bridge Street Boy’s School when Alfred W Harriss was headmaster, was the town’s unofficial communications’ hub for men and families during the Great War. It was where my passion for history was stirred in four years of schooling in the days when William A B Jones was headmaster. So, it is a thrill to launch Small Town Duty at the Old School on Remembrance Day, to be able to talk about the book and give a taste of its contents.

The format of the book follows the chronology of the war with numerous breakout boxes to expand on the stories of the Hadleigh men and their interconnecting families, as well as perspectives of the town at the time. There are 400 A4 pages of text, old photographs as well as images of today, both in Hadleigh and on the battle fields.

Maps are included and explained to encourage readers to know the places of the fighting and to explore the Western Front; places where Hadleigh men stood and where some still lay.

It was duty to King and Country or more correctly to one’s fellow man, that caused men to go to war. More than 800 Hadleigh men served in the military during the Great War. Almost 500 get a mention in the book, many in detail through the tales of their experiences. Hadleigh had 53 soldiers who could claim to be an Old Contemptible and were on the battle fronts in the first months of the conflict. In July 1915, ninety of the town’s men went together to Gallipoli and the next month sixteen of them were killed together on one day. In all the major battles through to the end of 1918, Hadleigh was represented; these men served not just on the Western Front in Europe and at Gallipoli and Palestine but in every corner of the world from the West Indies to Hong Kong and from Siberia to East Africa. There are 112 men remembered on the town’s War Memorial, quite a few are remembered elsewhere and many more returned wounded. Hadleigh’s last Tommy died in 1985.

After the launch the book will be available direct from the author (nigel.o.crisp@gmail.com) at 85 Angel Street, Hadleigh, IP7 5EY, by telephone 01473 822208 (free delivery in Hadleigh) or online at www.furandfeather.co.uk/shop

Hadleigh Art Club

We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those who ask, we try to give advice, guidance and constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group. We charge £2 per session to the cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5 and are due in May.

We have a list of weekly topics and these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current week’s) while others will be working on their own subject. Feel free to choose.

The programme will include Strauss Radetsky March, Hadleigh Blues composed by our very own John Cooper, last movement of Beethoven 5th Symphony, 1st movement Hadyn Piano Concerto No. 11 with local boy George Prosser as the piano soloist, and of course many of your favourite Christmas Carols, including O Holy Night with Kate Dines as soloist. Seven Ukrainian refugees living with hosts in or near Hadleigh have been given laptops supplied by the town’s Rotary Club.

When they left Ukraine they came with few possessions. But for schoolchildren, and working adults, laptops are an important piece of kit. When Hadleigh Rotary Club approached the community group, Hadleigh Hosts Ukrainians (HHU), to ask how they could help there was a resounding call for laptops. And the Rotarians came up trumps.

They presented the reconditioned computers to the Ukrainians during their English lessons held in Hadleigh St Mary’s Church.

There are now more than 50 Ukrainians living in the Hadleigh area, ranging in age from toddlers to pensioners. Many come with little or no English so the first job for Hadleigh Hosts Ukrainians was to find a way to provide English lessons. Now more than 40 attend classes run by accredited trainers in sessions organised by David Olive and financed by HHU. These evenings have developed into much loved weekly social gatherings hosted by Hadleigh church. Cake, I believe, is involved.

Money for projects like these comes from community help. Layham Community Events Group brought equipment for the Gallows Hill allotment offered free to refugees; Sarah Thompson has raised hundreds of pounds by selling Ukraine t-towels; Patzi Shepperson organised £250 vouchers each from Tesco and Sainsbury’s, donated by GeeWhizz, to finance a group project for Ukrainians currently being researched by Mary Williams. Hadleigh Rotary Club financed workwear as well as providing laptops. Even Music World in Ipswich helped out by donating new strings for a donated guitar and several people have donated bikes to help with travel problems. the list goes on; there’s a wealth of helpers at the English lessons providing refreshments and child care, not to mention the four or five teachers giving their time and expertise for free.

In this way HHU facilitates a large and diverse support network for refugees and their hosts, offering access to expertise in anything from health to education and trauma, all from local volunteers. With links to council refugee groups and national charities it is able to offer advice sessions and pass on information.

Most importantly, HHU brings together help from the community of Hadleigh to those who have sought safety in our town from war-torn Ukraine. They have left husbands, fathers, sons, brothers and grandchildren behind.

Many are now nearing the end of their six-month hosting arrangement and are faced with finding their own accommodation, though many have had little time to prepare financially for such a move. They will be looking for new hosts, or for landlords who might waive heavy rental deposits. Most have found work even though language difficulties and a shortage of public transport have presented challenges.

Some have children at local schools so need to stay in Hadleigh to avoid further disruption.

If you can help in any way, either as a host or helper, with fundraising or accommodation, please contact Hadleigh Hosts Ukrainians on 07711 321907 (Cyndy Hilton) or 07531 921831 (Shauna Bilson)

To discuss your accountancy and taxation requirements please feel free to contact us – our initial meetings are free!

James Cartlidge writes

I appreciate that these continue to be tough times for my constituents, facing continued strain from higher prices. Whether energy, food or other basic staples, there is no hiding the way in which the cost of living has shot up in recent months. As your Member of Parliament, I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight the Government support that is available to help with the cost of living, to ensure that the measures in place are helping as many people in South Suffolk as possible.

There are three main schemes: Energy Bills Support including a £400 nonrepayable discount to every domestic household to help offset the increase in energy bills; the Energy Price Guarantee which caps the unit price of electricity and gas that a typical household pays; and the Alternative Fuels Payment which provides a one-off payment to all ‘off grid’ customers, most notably those who rely on heating oil. The many ‘off grid’ households in South Suffolk eligible for these payments will receive £100 as a credit on their electricity bill this winter. For more information about how the support will be administered, please see my website: www.jamescartlidge.com/costofliving

Of course, whilst it is true that a large part of the inflationary pressure we face has been driven by Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine forcing up energy gas prices, it is important that we take every step nationally and locally to address inflation and drive economic growth. With financial credibility being restored at a UK level through difficult decisions to balance the books, I’m particularly keen to ensure local businesses have confidence to invest in a prosperous future.

We should also be clear that there is still much to be positive about, not least unemployment being at a near record low. In fact, out and about meeting Hadleigh businesses in recent months – including a number of thriving manufacturing firms on the Lady Lane industrial estate - a key concern has been finding new recruits. I therefore look forward to holding a Hadleigh Jobs’ Fair in the new year, with more details to follow. I also recently visited Hadleigh-based charity the Porch Project to learn about their ‘New Horizon’ scheme which has helped people enter volunteering, gain apprenticeships and, in some cases, full-time employment. With local firms so short staffed, it is vital that every element of support possible is put in place to help people back into the labour market.

A Cry from the

(The Wilderness lies between Tower Mill Lane and Ramsay Road/Newhaven Way, Hadleigh)

22 years ago, my wife and I came to assess the work programme required before moving into our bungalow, both in the garden and internally. A cockerel crowed next door, a bullfinch sat in an apple tree, and eventually a magpie followed us into the property; perhaps there should have been two!

The garden borders the Wilderness, and gives views of the reed bed, pussy willow, ash trees and the little stream that runs through it. Dragon flies hunted insects over the recently mown grass.

Over the ensuing 22 years we have been privileged to observe the potential for wildlife the Wilderness habitat can offer and support – Greater Spotted Woodpeckers, Tawny Owls, both Song and Mistle Thrushes, Black Cap, Jays, Magpies, Wren, Common and Goldcrest, Garden Warbler, Linett, Sparrowhawk, nesting Buzzards. A variety of butterflies including: Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown, Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Holly Blue, Comma, Tortoiseshell and Peacock. Various insects – Bush Cricket, Green Capsids, Damsel Flies (Red and Blue) and Dragonflies. Slow worms and Grass Snakes. Apart from all this we have also seen much badger activity and are aware of at least one badger sett within the Wilderness.

Sadly, limited felling of large trees commenced in August and no doubt further destruction will take place before planning permission is sought for a new development.

Presently all politicians are coming under pressure from the RSPB, Wildlife Trusts and the National Trust as to their cavalier attitude towards present wildlife legislation. I have spoken to and emailed various departments of Babergh and other Suffolk Councils including Suffolk County Council and have failed to have any meaningful explanation as to what exactly is going on - only to see the commencement of felling and habitat devastation.

My wife and I are currently attending the Hadleigh Town Council Planning Committee meetings at the Guildhall. Should you wish to comment, and I very much hope you do, please email or write to your Hadleigh Town Councillor and/or your Babergh District Councillor to express your concerns. Maybe we will meet at the next planning meeting?

Ukraine Aid

The war in Ukraine is showing an amazing resistance and recovery of territory by the Ukrainians, but with a reaction we see in greatly increased retaliatory strikes across the whole of Ukraine, including upon civilian targets, with an associated cost of lives and trauma within the regular and volunteer military, and civilian population. The Ukrainian spirit of courage, resilience and tenacity however, is widely reported and certainly evident in all my direct observations in continuing trips in to Ukraine.

Further to my first article in September, the car and supplies were successfully delivered to the displaced persons hostel, the air raid sirens starting as soon as we commenced unloading. All is very gratefully received and much gratitude expressed for me to pass on to all kind contributors – so thanks again to all! Deliveries were also made successfully within the same trip, of medical supplies to a hospital.

I have just returned from two further Ukraine aid trips; the first facilitated by the loan of a van by John Grose Ipswich who also very generously paid all diesel costs of the return journey to the border! Thank you Ian Twinley and colleagues. Again, the supplies for the Shelter were very generously provided by Hadleigh Morrisons and staff, thank you Lisa and colleagues, and all individuals who responded to the call in my first article. A large surprise donation from a church in Eastbourne enabled me to buy new thermals for soldiers to keep warm, and some special medication for response to chemical attack – I and the Ukrainian recipients are so very grateful to you all. There were again deliveries of medical supplies made at the same time. This trip had to be prematurely concluded by our early withdrawal from Ukraine due to the enhanced and widespread bombing at the time – including the town in which the shelter is – leaving it for periods without water and electricity. The second trip required me to drive an ambulance from Wales to Amsterdam, for it to be included in a convoy of 6 ambulances bought and taken to Ukraine by Ukrainians.

My volunteer commitment to Ukraine is ongoing and I intend further supplies trips to the shelter - and definitely in time for Christmas.

There is such great need across the world, in the UK and often on our own doorsteps, that the generosity of all seems much stretched. I do not ask anyone to divert resources from any other need they are committed to, but if you are currently in a position to do so, please do not hesitate to contact me regarding the donation of any supplies or financial assistance. We take care to provide receipt and photographic proof of any purchase and delivery, to all main/large donators.

Items remaining in much demand for displaced people and orphans continue to be as previously related; non-perishable foodstuffs, baby food/bottles and nappies, toiletries for all ages, personal hygiene and general washing/cleaning products, medicines and general health care items, NEW children’s clothing, clean and good condition blankets/duvets and extra warm clothing for adults.

Other good quality miscellaneous items can prove to be of great benefit/comfort to somebody, so feel free to enquire. I remain ever on the lookout for 2nd hand vehicles, free or low priced, pickups and SUVs preferred, which we use for delivery and then donate to volunteer military battalions, who have great need of these.

I am also looking for a free and secure location in which I can store donated supplies, rather than my garage. Thanks again to all who have supported or wished these initiatives well. Ukrainians repeatedly express how encouraging it is to experience that the “ordinary” person cares and stands with them in this. I look forward to hearing from any supporter and can be contacted on 07500 531901.

This is Sarah Cook beside a Cedric Morris painting of Irises. She was our October speaker. What humorous tales she had to tell together with advice on growing Irises. Her local garden is brim full of numerous varieties that Sarah enjoys sharing with the public. Now the weather is getting back to normal it is possible to get on with routine jobs around the garden and allotment. Why not plant some garlic? They are easy to grow, best bought from a garden centre, but supermarket ones can be ok. The best time to plant is now before any frost.

Break the head of garlic up into cloves and plant each individual clove upright pointed end up, with the tip showing. Keep weed free and harvest in mid summer. Give garlic a go it is really easy.

On November 14th our talk is about the History of the National Garden Scheme entitled “Beyond the Garden Gate”. Do join us in the Guildhall. Visitors £4, members £2. The competition this month is a vase of autumn flowers.

Hope to see you there…happy gardening. Email: hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Hadleigh and District Flower Club

We had a wonderful modern flower demonstration by Debbie from Triangle Nursery, seasonal flowers and interesting chat. Triangle had a fire at their warehouse in Martlesham and now have a Unit at Rendlesham. The business has had to change but they import a lot of flowers for distribution around East Anglia. What an interesting demonstration we had. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at The Hadleigh United Reform Church at 7:30.

Hadleigh Cycling Club Membership Offer

Hadleigh Cycling Club wants to increase the number of cyclists, of all ages, in and around the town: to improve health, well-being, sustainability and enjoyment. To reduce barriers to participation, the Committee has decided to keep down the cost of membership in 2023 to £10 for sign-ups before the end of the year. The offer includes up to 2 children per adult membership. Membership is FREE to anyone who orders a club jersey, gilet or jacket before 9th November. Details of how to renew or join the Club and take advantage of the offer can be found at www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk The Club, together with Hadleigh Town Council, has organised another FREE bike maintenance session which will take place on Saturday, 26th November from 10am – noon at the Ansell Centre. Contact 07811435883 to book a place. The aim is to teach riders how to deal with a road side puncture and simple repairs. Participants will need to bring their own bikes to work on. It has been great to follow the progress of HCC youngsters in cyclo-cross races across the Eastern Region. Ciaran, Charlie and Aaron have performed creditably in the Under 14 boys’ races and Evie has had some success in the Under 12 girls’ races. Post-Covid, the regular Junior Club sessions have not taken place. Recently, Junior coaches met with Simon King, who is standing down after 10 fantastic years’ service, to plan next year’s programme. The Club runs a social ride on Sundays usually starting at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. Currently, we’re also running regular rides on Fridays (women). The rides are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub Twitter @HadleighCycling or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

Letter from Layham www.layham.org

Parish Council

Below are the main matters discussed during the meeting of 28 September 2022.

• District Council report

Cllr Ward confirmed that work had started on the Corks Lane development; in response to a question from Cllr Laing, he said the cost of security over the last four years was approximately £100,000 per year. He confirmed that agreement had been reached with the cricket club and all outstanding issues had now been resolved. Babergh would liaise with SCC about the footpath from Upper Layham to Hadleigh, following a site visit by SCC with Cllr Woods and the Clerk. Cllr Laing commented that the parking strategy showed there were some advantages to introducing a charge for short-term parking, but there were more disadvantages. Cllr Ward said that the strategy was more about the future requirements for both off and on-street parking and ensuring enough capacity for people’s needs.

• County Council report

Cllr Curran was pleased to note that residents could register with the Solar Together Suffolk scheme.

• New noticeboard for Playing Field

The Clerk confirmed she had ordered a new, larger noticeboard to replace the old one at the recycling centre; the working party had identified a possible location – as this was just outside the playing field, permission would be sought from the landowner if necessary.

SALC Area Meeting

Cllr Keeble had attended the Zoom meeting held on 6 September; her report was noted. Richard Baldwin was Babergh’s new Locality Officer covering Layham; it was agreed to consider inviting him to a future meeting.

• Defibrillator for Stoke Road

It was agreed to reconvene a working party to look at the possible installation of a defibrillator on Stoke Road. The working party would canvass the views of Stoke Road residents and bring recommendations and costs to the October meeting.

• Remembrance Day

It was agreed unanimously to purchase a wreath as usual; this would be laid by Cllr Keeble.

Loss of yew tree at St Andrew’s Church

One of the yew trees growing beside the church tower has been discovered to be diseased and the roots interfering with the foundations of the building. The PCC had to make the very hard decision to have the tree removed. Luckily, cameras were around that day and the felling of the tree was recorded.

Layham Social Club

Another successful session was held in October with games, quizzes, refreshments and a chat. It was good to see such a lively turn out. Our next session will be on 3 November 2-4 pm. We have agreed to have subs of £2 each to cover village hall hire costs and go towards refreshments. Our theme, as it is November, is ‘remembering’. Please bring an object and/or a photograph to trigger memories for you to share one to one or in a small group. We will also have Peter’s quiz to look forward to. Well done to Juliet for winning the food and drink quiz. We are planning a Christmas meal at the Queen’s Head Layham and more details will follow.

If you would like to socialise in a friendly environment at Layham Village Hall please join us. Sue Keeble: suekeeuk@yahoo.co.uk

Layham Playing Field

October is the month when the Playing Field 120 Club raffle tickets come up for renewal. The members of the committee are grateful to all buyers, as the regular dependable income from the project enables us to keep on top of maintenance. If you do not have a ticket there are usually one or two available – we would be pleased to hear from you (contact Simon Bewsher on 07736 070266). Winning ticket numbers are displayed on the village notice boards and published in the Hadleigh Community News (Letter from Layham).

Layham Village Hall Management Committee

The village hall has been used a lot during the last month with Playgroup returning after the summer holidays, Yoga classes and Ballet classes on Tuesdays and a new social club meeting on the first Thursday each month. We have also hosted two children’s birthday parties, so much easier when you have 30 young children to entertain and at £10 an hour worth the expense. Please email Rosey on rosey.emma@btinternet.com for hall hire information. We applied for and have been successful in obtaining a grant from Babergh District Council’s Development Fund towards insulating, recladding, and repainting the village hall. We received a grant from Layham Events Committee, plus we have been fundraising during the year towards this expense. Thank you to those who have helped make this possible. If you live in Layham and need self-testing Covid kits, please contact Rosey, or Jan on 01473 871043and we can provide them free of charge, donated by Community Action Suffolk.

Layham Playgroup

We have been enjoying the lovely autumn colours of our surrounding countryside. On our walks we have been collecting items to bring back to playgroup for our autumn resources, where we have used them in our crafts and play. We have also been thinking about animals and their houses, and helping them prepare for winter.

If you are interested in seeing Layham Playgroup for yourself and would like to arrange a taster session or visit, please contact us on 07999 866419 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk

Above the Parapet

Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Hadleigh Library

The biggest highlight of my councillor year is the annual awarding of certificates to the children of Hadleigh who take part in the Hadleigh Library’s Summer Reading Challenge. I have really missed this event over the past couple of years, because of the COVID meeting restrictions imposed on us. Hadleigh Library is a wonderful establishment run by Sarah Hunt and her hugely dedicated team who provide wide-ranging and vital services for all of us.

Easy access entrance – Hadleigh Library

If you were unaware, Suffolk Libraries is an independent charity that runs the county’s library service. Suffolk Council remains the statutory authority which funds and monitors the performance of the public library service. The charity’s mission is to nurture children’s literacy, support vulnerable people and promote wellbeing across Suffolk. They run a different kind of library service, where they measure their impact and work with local organisations and businesses to make life better for the people of Suffolk. Also supporting Hadleigh Library are the Friends of Hadleigh Library, a team of volunteers who organize events and initiatives, and raise funds to buy equipment and furniture. In past years, I have delighted to support them with funding from my local budgets for their various projects. In addition to its traditional purpose of lending books and providing a source of information, our library provides a wide range of services and support to the community including:

Issuing E-books, e-audiobooks, and e-learning courses

Top Time Group – a weekly meeting event for the over 55’s

Word Play – A fun literacy activity for the under 5’s; Thursdays for 0-18months, Fridays for up to 5-year olds.

Family Craft Activity – A Sunday fun family crafting session with new craft activities every week

Press Reader – Access to Global Newspapers; my personal favourite being L’Equipe during the Le Tour de France season

Home Leisure Service – Delivering books to the less mobile residents

Hearing Aid Maintenance – Battery replacements and repairs by appointment Mini Movers - Early Years movement classes, ideal for toddlers and their grown-ups

And IT, free wi-fi, printing and copying available And of course, the Summer Reading Challenge – book reading challenge for children during the schools’ summer break. Babergh District Council also use the building for its Customer Access Point when two BDC officers are available for face-to-face meetings with residents. This service is available on Wednesday afternoons during 13:30 – 16:30.

There are two useful rooms for hire: The Seminar Room for up to 40persons with up-to-date IT presentation facilities; and The Hub room – a digital office facility available for small business use.

A new service being considered is having the library as a designated Warm Space for those who might struggle to heat their homes during the daytime hours. I thoroughly recommend visiting our library to see what it might offer and further information of Suffolk Libraries’ service can be found on their website: www.suffolklibraries.co.uk/

Councillor Surgery I hold my surgery on the third Saturday of the month with the next being at 11:00 on Saturday 19th November 2022 in the anti-room of the Royal British Legion Club, George Street. Should you need to speak to me concerning an issue that affects you, please email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk or mick.fraser@babergh.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or Facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh, Twitter: @mick_fraser. Highways faults can be reported at: https://highwaysreporting.suffolk.gov.uk/ or by telephone: 0345 606 6171.

Co-op is one

on

High Street. It began independently in 1886, but soon and within a year became a branch of the Ipswich Industrial Co-op Society Ltd. and in 1908 the manager was Mr. George Thomas Rowe. Frank Ling was then the manager after the First World War. The stock originally began with provisions but later grew to incorporate drapery and housewares. The drapery department and the housewares were on the first floor in separate rooms and remained there into the 1960s. A refurbishment of the premises took place and was officially opened during 1967, during a period of great change within the town and when many of the former shops were closing, and new businesses were replacing those services previously being offered. Many may remember Mr. Eric Halls the manager during the 1980’s. He was somewhat diminutive in height, but he was very visible on the shop floor and moving quickly between the aisles to offer help to customers, or check stock levels on the shelves. A major redevelopment began during 2003 following the closure of the dairy unit and its demolition at the rear of the store. The Co-op store temporarily relocated across the road to occupy the former Alldays shop on the corner of Queen Street. The new building works were well underway during September, and into 2004 the roof was being tiled in. After eleven months at their temporary location, the new Solar, Co-op Store was ready to resume trading in the new and enlarged premises, and it was officially opened on the 27th of October 2004.

Christmas in The Countryside

Chelsworth Christmas Fair gives shoppers the ideal opportunity to do some Christmas shopping in a lovely festive setting and without going anywhere near a crowded high street.

Chelsworth is undoubtedly one of Suffolk’s most beautiful villages and the Christmas Fair takes place inside one of it’s more spectacular buildings - the medieval All Saints Church, which nestles in a peaceful setting close to the River Brett. In fact the Church has no direct access from a road, so visitors park at a nearby farm and walk a short distance down the pretty village street to the church. It’s a real countryside Christmas experience

The Church will be decorated for Christmas and seasonal music will add to the festive atmosphere. There will be around 23 stalls selling crafts, gifts, cards and foods. Light refreshments will be available, including plenty of mulled wine and mincepies. In addition tickets will be available for the well known Chelsworth Christmas Raffle, which will be drawn at the end of the day. As ever, the main prizes for the raffle will be a selection of luxury Christmas hampers which are put together by the villagers.

So why not start your Christmas season with a visit to Chelsworth? After shopping at the Fair you could take a walk in our community woodland, which is close to the parking area or you could visit our very welcoming village pub, The Peacock Inn. We look forward to welcoming you on December 3rd.

Here are all the details:

Date: Saturday 3rd December 11am to 4pm

Venue: All Saints Church Chelsworth. IP7 7HU.

Admission: Adults £3, children (and Chelsworth residents) free

Fidelis September Meeting

The delicious aroma of a risotto cooking the garlic followed by hot butter, and finely diced vegetables then the addition of the risotto rice. Then the steady addition of the hot stock ladle by ladle into the pan. The rice plumping up as each ladle is added and finally the plump succulent rice ready to be tasted and savoured. With one more addition the fillet of hake just cooked until it flaked away on top of the risotto. This is the fabulous presentation the Fidelis ladies had from Justin Kett, award winning chef and owner of Fork delicatessen here in Hadleigh. In between cooking he gave us an overview of his cooking career and the many places he had visited on his travels and cooked at. Cooking in Thailand and America, then Australia and New Zealand. Coming back to the UK to cook in Taunton with a renowned chef, leading to Justin finally coming back to his place of birth in Suffolk where he cooked in various locations before finally coming to Hadleigh to set up his own business.

A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon with some delicious tasting done at the end of the session. If you fancy joining Justin for a cookery class, keep a look out for his next set of dates when these will be happening. We are delighted to welcome new members and you are welcome to come along to our next event to see if you would like to join our group.

We meet on the fourth thursday of the month at 2.00 in the Dining Room which is opposite the Ram in Hadleigh on Market Square.

Full details of routes and times will appear in the December issue of this magazine.

Ukraine Crisis: BULLETIN No 6 – Further to last month’s report, 8 laptops etc have been presented to Ukranian students at a recent meeting in St Marys Church and were gratefully received as can be seen by the smiles on their faces in the accompanying photograph. President Richard Whiting handed over the laptops to each student individually in a short ceremony. A little further afield, President of Kyiv International Rotary Club, Oksana Tjupa, travelled to Norwich to speak at the District Annual Conference. She had quite a difficult journey to reach England and we are honoured to have her presence. I hope to report more fully on this in next month’s issue. Rotary in the wider world: Most reports recently have concentrated, perhaps quite rightly, on the terrible happenings in Ukraine but many more tragedies have been occurring around the world with droughts in Africa, Floods in Pakistan, storms in the Far East etc etc. Rotary has been there to help at every disaster with money, equipment, food and physical aid through its own Charitable Foundation and associated organisations such as Aquabox and Shelterbox. In addition World polio eradication has not been forgotten and work continues in Pakistan and Afghanistan despite natural and political disasters. Flood and famine are breeding grounds for polio so vigilance and continued immunisation is essential. Where there is a problem in the world you can count on Rotary being there to help in any way it can. Members are proud to represent such an organisation – would you like to join us? To learn more Telephone David 01473 827226 or visit the Rotary Club of Hadleigh website. You will also be welcome at one of our coffee mornings. The next one is on the 15th November at Cobblers –looking forward to seeing you!

Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson

Hadleigh North Ward – 20th October 2022

Council offices at Corks Lane, Hadleigh - Local contractor Gipping was appointed by Babergh Growth to deliver the housing scheme at Corks Lane, former HQ offices. Work has already commenced on the exterior with the unfortunate removal of established trees for a car park, but very disappointing when there is the Bridge St car park with 100 spaces across the road. Evidence has shown from Consultants in the Strategic Parking Review, Hadleigh is at threshold, and the logic of removing 100 spaces in the centre of the town is a poor long term strategic decision by the Rainbow Coalition of Independents, Lib Dems and Labour, particularly as it is only to make the whole site financially viable. Further, an out-of-town agent William Brown 14 miles away in Sudbury were appointed over our local Frosts and Chapman Stickels following a ‘commercial tendering exercise’. Again, another poor judgement call, each of these could have provided the service required with additional staff. I have asked Gipping to display a large site map for residents as the plans are illegible online.

Manor Gardens Wildlife Area - I have asked Babergh and McCarthy & Stone to agree to a final inspection date on 7th Dec, prior to handover of the Manor Gardens Wildlife Area. A decision will be made whether the site is now viable for Babergh to continue with long term maintenance of the site. I have been reluctant to accept this site until Mc & S deliver an acceptable aesthetic landscape for residents and walkers. Unfortunately, during COVID the site was not maintained satisfactorily and caused considerable destruction of the plants and wildlife, which has had to be remodelled at considerable cost.

Babergh Officers inspected the area of wildflower/grass in July and reported that the seeding had not been successful. There is an abundance of Knapweed, a smattering of Ragwort and creeping Thistle, although this would not have been in the wildflower mix. A big concern is the number of Mares Tail growing near and on the grass patch, this is highly invasive and has really spread and very hard to remove. McCarthy and Stone state advised me, reseeding has taken place and the invasive species have been correctly dealt with. The S106 agreement indicates that the site must be planted correctly and in a fit condition prior to Babergh accepting transfer.

Employment Land - The 1.5 acres of allocated employment land, acquired as part of a S106 agreement with Persimmon Homes situated on the A1071 at Ipswich Road, Hadleigh. I have supported this proposal to bring new workspaces to Hadleigh for local retail/ roadside uses. The scheme is for 10 light industrial or workspace units for a range of uses including micro and startup businesses. The design of the scheme is based on a Menta report, commissioned by Babergh District Council to understand the demand for workspaces in the area. It is hoped that the development will create around 50 full time jobs, support local skills, enhance business network development and provide much needed grow-on space for small businesses as well as potential for employment opportunities for young people. This should provide a boost to the local economy as part of the Babergh’s Economic Recovery Plan post covid.

Benton End Update - Following my meeting with Officers and Christopher Woodward, Director of the Benton End and Jo Wiltcher, I am delighted after a very positive meeting Hadleigh have been successful in securing £19,000 from Babergh, a generous donation that will go towards securing the building with alarms and a step in the direction towards making it a viable proposition in the future for exhibitions, as well as restoring the plants and development of the gardens and Fine Arts Centre.

Hadleigh Angling Society - I should like to take this opportunity of thanking Steve Farthing and Kevin for my visit with the Hadleigh Angling Society. Having secured funds from Mc & S for their legal fees, I was invited to attend a very successful open morning at Bullocky Fen. Truly a hidden jewel. I was more than surprised to find such a beautiful hidden lake covered in white Lilly pads, the anglers have created a wonderful man-made lake and the careful maintenance of the lake and surrounding area has made it a truly memorable

34 Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

place to visit and fish. Thank you to all the anglers and for your endeavours along the Hadleigh riverbank too.

Cost of Living /Foodbank Initiative - I can confirm that Elysa Dale at Babergh will be Babergh’s new Cost of Living Co-ordinator and she started on Monday, 3rd October 2022. Please, if any resident needs assistance or advice, contacted: Elysa.Dale@Baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk. During the next few months, there will be hard times ahead. Neil Bevis’s foodbank in Morrisons is the only foodbank dedicated specifically for Hadleigh residents, please do give and do not hesitate to make a request if needed. I have given a donation from my Locality Budget this year to support this important worthy cause.

London Marathon I was delighted to see Stuart Service, Dale at Andrews Butchers and many others who completed the Marathon. I was invited to assist as part of an Elite Podiatric team on the finishing line. I was so very proud of our Hadleigh Competitors, completing the 26m course to raise funds for worthy causes, in spite of the train strike, they made it a truly remarkable and memorable for those like me able to be present as they came over the line. Well Done from all of Hadleigh to those who competed.

Whatfield Craft Fair

An annual charity Craft Fair held at Whatfield Village Hall attracted over 240 people last month. Visitors were treated to a wide variety of handmade goods, homemade snacks and a bumper raffle. The Organiser, Mandy Squirrell, was delighted the day was such a success and praised helpers for their weeks of hard work preparing for the event.

She expressed special thanks to her family members and for the support of friends Marilyn, Margaret, Paul and Nealey.

Mandy greatly appreciated help from “Success After Stroke” Manager “SJ”, physiotherapist Jeannette and members Maz and Sue. She also thanked people who generously donated over twenty five high value prizes. A total of £1700 was raised which will be donated to SAS and Whatfield Primary School.

Blanket Bonanza

How the blanket knitting group has grown. We are almost a cottage industry with so many industrious, creative ladies beavering away in the comfort of their own homes to produce the most magnificent colourful blankets. This month the knitters have excelled themselves by giving me a total of 110 multicoloured woollen rectangles to pass on to the charity Project Linus.

As the blankets come in various sizes the Charity is able to respond to all requests for help from neo-natal units to care homes, refuges, refugee centres and many other calls for their woolly warmers.

The blankets will be especially welcome this winter as household costs rise, it will be heating that takes the first hit. My thanks to everyone involved for their wonderful creations. I know they will be loved and very much appreciated. If you would like to become a home knitter, receive a pattern and or wool please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Clare Dawson – Photographer

Clare has had a lifelong love of nature and the great outdoors. Her passion for capturing it photographically goes back to her eighth year when she was given a Box Brownie camera. At that time her favourite subjects were zoo animals through their wire cages. From those early snaps Clare progressed to black and white subjects developed in her own darkroom and some year’s later portraits of all ages.

By the time Clare reached 57 she decided it was time to brush up her skills more seriously and to this end she enrolled in a two year A-level course at the 6th form college in Colchester. This was succeeded by a highly competitive course in Editorial and Advertising Photography at the University of Gloucester.

Although Clare was a mature student, the ‘kids’ on the course were helpful. In spite of her dyslexia and having to come to grips with digital photography, Clare successfully gained a BA Honours in her chosen subject at the age of 59. Clare also gained a Nikon Award and an Arts’ Council Bursary lead to her work being exhibited to a much wider audience. This was further increased when she applied her unique skills to Garden Photography. The Suffolk magazine has frequently included her selected gardens in many editions of that popular, high quality publication.

Having successfully made the transition from enthusiastic amateur to a sensitive professional photographer with her own style, Clare says “I would encourage anyone, no matter how old, to branch out and learn something new. Photography has given me enormous pleasure and also taught me to truly ‘see’ nature; the curl of a leaf, colours and unusual shapes.” We are extremely fortunate to be able to enjoy Clare’s work while it is on display in the Practice Waiting Room (the old pharmacy area). Photos may be purchased with 10% of the sale price going to the Hadleigh and Boxford Medical Practice Charitable Trust.

2022

At this time every year we pause to remember the service and sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. In Hadleigh the RBL have traditionally organised the main events on behalf of the town. This year the following events are taking place:

Schools Cemetery Visits - Thu 10 Nov. The Mayor invites local school children to visit the town’s cemetery where they will hear stories about the local war graves and will observe an act of remembrance.

Armistice Day - Fri 11 Nov. A short act of remembrance with a two minutes silence at 11:00am will be observed. Those wishing to attend should gather at the milestone on George Street.

“A Small Town Duty” book launch - Fri 11 Nov. Nigel Crisp one of the researchers involved in The Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project is launching his book at 7:30pm at the Old School House on Bridge Street. The book tells the stories of Hadleigh folk during the Great War.

Remembrance Sunday - The annual Remembrance Sunday parade will depart the RBL on George Street at 1:55pm and make its way to the war memorial. After a wreath laying ceremony, the parade will then proceed to St Mary’s church where a Remembrance service will take place at 3:00pm. Wreaths will be available at the RBL and veterans are invited to join the parade.

Remembrance Cemetery Tour - A guided tour of the Great War war graves in Hadleigh cemetery will take place on 5 & 6 Nov 22. A local guide will tell the stories of the ten local men buried in the cemetery. Anyone wishing to join the tour should meet at the gate house at Friars Road Cemetery at 10:00am either day. Donations to the Poppy Appeal will be appreciated.

Halloween has just passed with the prospect of Guy Fawkes night looming with all the excitement for the children. Spare a thought for our animal friends who find it so very frightening, please make sure they are safe and remain unharmed. There is so much strife going on in the world at this time with countries torn apart by war, ideals so very alien to us in the west, the devastation of disease and rising costs for food, heating etc. Our thought are with those who are suffering and strength given to those who are risking their lives to help. We, at times, do not realise how lucky we are to have freedom of speech, choice, and movement there so many who do not. If you feel you would like to talk with someone, in confidence about your concerns our qualified, registered healers are there to listen.

Just phone 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org or visit our Hadleigh Healing Society Facebook page for an appointment.

We meet upstairs in the Library Seminar Room at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday (there is a lift). In October we looked forward to welcoming Cheryl from Rosebuds Florists demonstrating the making of a Christmas wreath. On November 15th Linda Scoles' talk is entitled 'God Rest Ye Merry - really disastrous Christmas gifts are my speciality'. Do hope I have not been guilty of sending one! You might tell of one/s you have received.

The amble on Wednesday the 2nd November (weather permitting) is to Lavenham (once we have arrived there by car!). The Reading Group book for Thursday November 24th will be more light-hearted than October's 'The Madness of Grief' by Richard Coles! The Lunch Bunch will be meeting for a convivial meal at Belstead Brook on Wednesday 10th November. As the seminar room is booked for the 20th December, so near Christmas, we will not have a meeting but plan a January Cheer-Up feast on Tuesday 17th after having done some Armchair Exercises!!

If you would like to come along for a 'taster' meeting, contact the Secretary Glenn Abbassi on 07870 312409, or the President Sheila Webb on 01473 827554, when we will look out for you. Alternatively, just turn up and introduce yourself!

Look forward to welcoming you. Sheila Webb

Learning and Growing Together

KS2 History Workshop Kestrel's class topic for Autumn 2022 is ‘Britain at War’. The children have been learning about the causes, events and consequences of the First and Second World Wars, the influence of new inventions on warfare, how life in Great Britain was affected and the legacy of the wars in the post-war period. They enjoyed a super day dressing up in costume when ‘Portals to the Past’ provided practical a hands-on living history workshop. Using a combination of practical activities, role-play and drama, the pupils learned about the past by experiencing it first-hand.

Harvest Assembly Lots of our parents joined the children for our Harvest assembly today. Parents enjoyed a variety of poems and songs that the children had learned for them. Thank you to our generous parents for the huge amount of non-perishable items we can now donate to the 'Bildeston Food Bank'. Continuing with Harvest, Goldcrest class mixed the primary colours to make the colours of an apple which we shared in Harvest assembly and they also made a fruit salad and a salad using the bridging technique to keep their fingers safe.

Goldcrest Class Fun! Reception class made Paddington Bears and marmalade sandwiches because the Queen was such good friends with Paddington. They also dressed up as the Royal family and made Buckingham palace in their large construction area.

Cross Country Amazing effort by everyone at the cross-country event on Friday 7th October. Special well done to the U9 girls’ team who finished in 2nd place overall. You all did the school proud! If you are considering Bildeston Primary as a school for your child, we would welcome a visit. Please phone the office on the number below. We would love to meet you.

The Children’s Society

It may seem inappropriate with the coming expense of Christmas, notice of the increase in utility charges, rising inflation and mortgages etc. to be asking you to consider contributing to charity when there is so much financial pressure at home. I know that wonderful Just Food in Hadleigh is having to widen its distribution. However, this is making things even more difficult for those charities dedicated to helping children who are the innocent victims of poverty, war, disasters, etc.

We only have to see on our televisions the stick limbs of babes and children, learn of the appalling death rates, the bereaved families whohave tried to do so much for their children, to be aware of those with far worse lives than we have. We see those doing all they can to help, frustratingly constrained by the financial contributions from the likes of us. Would you please consider having a box to be putting in a small amount throughout the year. Some put in it the small change from their pockets each day, others a regular amount - I put in mine the cost of a litre of milk each week. If you put just 10p a day in the box, over the year this would amount to £36 - which can be increased by signing up to gift aid*. The boxes are collected annually. Over the years, due to people no longer being in Hadleigh, the number has fallen for this extremely worthwhile charity.

Please contact me and I will arrange for a box to be delivered to your home.

Very grateful thanks, Sheila Webb, Box Cordinator 01473 827554

Ken’s SESAW News

Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

That silly chihuahua gave me the best laugh I’ve had in ages! He was boasting about ‘writing’ Kenny’s SESAW News since 2012. That’s a decade to you and me – but he never admits to being more than eight years old! He can’t even get up on time since the clocks went back so here’s my cat’s eye view of our news, starting with our first Christmas Fair since 2019. Our volunteers have organised lots of gifts, crafts and bargains plus Jeanette’s Terrific Tombola and refreshments served all day. Open 10am to 3pm on Sunday 20th at the Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX.

SESAW takes in not only domestic animals but also wildlife casualties including sick or injured hedgehogs found wandering during the day. This year the prolonged dry weather delayed their release into supported sites so two hedgehogs passed the time by helping increase their numbers to eight! All are now living in suitable areas where our volunteers oversee their welfare.

Hedgehogs numbers are falling but humans can help by supplying drinking water and cat or dog food to eat, never bread and milk. They need gaps under fences to move between gardens and a pile of leaves and twigs to hide under - please check for ‘Spike’ before you build a bonfire. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk)

and People’s Trust for Endangered Species (www.ptes.org) provide very detailed help and advice on what you can do. The evenings are drawing in and it’s too cold to stay out but I always grumble when Mother scoops me up to go indoors each night. Anyone who thinks I’m a pushover doesn’t know me, Ollie (the Black) Cat!

Preparing for Pirating!

Hadleigh Amateur Dramatics Society (HADS) has started rehearsals for their 2023 pantomime “Peter Pan and the Pesky Pirates”! Written by the everentertaining duo of Trevor and Sarah-Jane Clarke, the script is based, loosely, on the novel by J M Barrie. It tells the story of the everlasting child from a Hadleigh perspective. The panto will also be directed by the writers and will be performed over 4 shows in February 2023. The September auditions broke with tradition this year. One was held in Hadleigh and the other in Elmsett to offer the chance for budding thespians to strut the stage in their own village. As is typical for HADS, the auditions were attended by old hands however the directors were so pleased to see new people join in the fun. The calendar of rehearsals is being split between Hadleigh and Elmsett which is a great advantage to the cast; the ability to be able to rehearse on the stage where the performances will take place will help the directors place their cast and allow the actors to move around in the right space. Following a few unavoidable technical headaches at this year’s panto, Andrew Love is starting the preparations for light and sound very early and will be involved in most of the rehearsals, as will our musical maestros in the form of the Live Panto Band. The shows will include our usual eclectic mix of songs; some from known stage performances of Peter Pan and some chart toppers from olden and modern times.

The backstage personnel are starting their preparation too; Jo Sheldrake, ably assisted by Sophie Hall, will be managing the costumes. Jen HammockSheen returns as Stage and Props Manager, ensuring that all the designs, backdrops, swords, crocodiles and pouches of fairy dust are in the right place at the right time.

So please put a note in your diaries to join us in Neverland, otherwise known as Elmsett Village Hall. We’ll be setting sail at 7.30pm on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th February 2023 and 2.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday 18th February 2023. Boarding tickets are available from Avis Newsagent in Hadleigh, Elmsett Village Store or www.hads.webs.com

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice

The cost of things just keeps going up. The food shop doesn’t stretch as far and my bills just keep getting higher. I’ve made cutbacks and, at the moment, I’m just about managing but I’m really worried about how I’ll cope as it starts getting colder. What should I do?

You’re not alone in struggling with rising costs, but it’s important to know there is support available.

If you’re finding it hard to stay on top of bills, make sure you know what money you’ve got coming in and out each month. Citizens Advice has an online budgeting tool that can help with this.

It’s also worth finding out if you’re eligible for any benefits or support with your energy and living costs. On the Citizens Advice website there’s a benefits calculator, advice on how to reduce living costs and information on other ways to increase your income. The good news is there is help with rising energy bills. From October 1 2022, there’s a limit on gas and electricity prices for most households - this is called the Energy Price Guarantee and will be in place for two years. From October you’ll also get £400 off your electricity bill. This is called the Energy Bills Support Scheme. You don’t need to do anything to get the money and you won’t have to pay it back. The money will be paid in six instalments, you’ll get £66 in October and November followed by £67 in December, January, February and March. You should automatically receive the energy discount if you pay by direct debit, standard credit or payment card.

If you have a prepayment meter that isn’t a smart meter, you’ll get the discount via vouchers or as an automatic credit when you top up at your usual top-up point. Your supplier will let you know how they will issue it.

If you have a smart prepayment meter, the credit should be automatically added to your meter.

If you can’t pay your bills, speak to your energy supplier as they have a responsibility to help you come up with a solution.

For information and advice on this or anything else, visit www.citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk

Maths Through the Movies

This week in school we have had a Maths Through Movies week. This meant that each class took a movie and looked at some of the maths problems within excerpts from it. Ruby Class have looked at Bugs Life and have completed various activities that included counting, comparing, ordering and sorting various bugs while also improving their fine motor skills by using tweezers to collect them. Emerald Class looked at Ice Age, Dawn of the Dinosaurs where they used tally charts and completed pictograms to display their data. Sapphire Class found their maths in Finding Nemo to order various sized numbers and to round them. Diamond Class used the film Monsters Inc to solve as many types of reasoning and problem-solving question types as they could. Who knew maths could be so much fun!

Macmillan Tea Party

In school we feel that it is important to give back to our local community as well as to support charity wherever we can. We are so lucky that many people from both Hintlesham and Chattisham, as well as the surrounding area, support the school in such a variety of ways. We have people who hear children read, look after our amazing grounds (including teaching the staff how to carry on with this in between their visits), hold clubs for the children and support our HSA by buying raffle tickets etc. This is without all of the unseen support such as putting up with the parking outside school, balls over the fence and the general hubbub of school life.

We feel strongly that we in turn should repay this and so one of the village events that we support each year is the Macmillan Coffee Afternoon. In school each child takes part in making a variety of cakes that we then ask parents to drop in to the village event to buy. Every year the school is filled with the most delightful smells of these cakes which certainly encourages attendance at the sale after school! This year the Tea Party raised £800! We are proud of our small contribution towards this.

Patient Participation Group (PPG)

Over 1,000 vaccinations were given on the first all day clinic on Saturday 1st October. As take up was less than expected a second afternoon clinic was held on 12th October. This was to accommodate patients who had only had one vaccination because they had either taken up an electronic invitation from the NHS, gone to a Pharmacy or just preferred one vac at a time. A second all day clinic was held on 29th October. Once again members of the PPG and other patients manned strategic points in and around the Practice to ensure the safe and continuous flow of patients and cars throughout the sessions. Several appointments for the next day are offered online after 7pm the evening before. This additional access to following day appointments seems to be much appreciated and working well.

At the time of going to print, the newly created inside Practice dispensary is planned for the end of October. Eligible patients will have been notified of the details all of which are also available on the Practice website. There will be no change to the dispensing arrangements at Boxford.

Two PPG members have volunteered to be Trustees of the Hadleigh and Boxford Health Centres Charitable Trust. The group is planning to draw attention to the remit of the Charity so that eligible patients can benefit. Finally a big thank you to PPG members and patients who have enthusiastically given their time and considerable energy to support the vac clinics last month.

Hadleigh Walkers

Our walk on Saturday 12th Nov will start and end at Bildeston. Our route will be High Street Farm, Naughton village, Calves Wood, Whatfield village and back to Bildeston via Crouch Farm and Willow Cottage. The route is about 10.5 miles over fairly easy terrain. We will have two rest stops along the way, so we suggest you bring a small snack and something to drink as there are no shops enroute. The walk will take around 4½ hours so we should be back at the cars by around 2pm. For those needing refreshments after the walk, the Crown is just a few yards away.

We will meet at 0930 at the war memorial square in the centre of Bildeston. There is only limited parking on the square, but parking can be found in the side streets. If anyone needs a lift from Hadleigh please email us and we’ll try our best to put you in touch with a driver. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. A quick reminder, we ask for a voluntary donation of £1 from each walker to cover our website costs. Any excess funds at the end of each year are generally donated to a local charity.

For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 07483 887658

Hadleigh Town Council commission transport study

2020 Consultancy have been commissioned by Hadleigh Town Council to undertake a transport study within Hadleigh town to identify interventions that can support the Neighbourhood Plan. As part of this process, 2020 Consultancy are keen to engage with residents and businesses within the town. A high-level consultation process will begin in December to allow stakeholders to understand the potential options that can be developed for Hadleigh, and to provide comment on what should be prioritised.

As part of the consultation, 2020 Consultancy will be attending the Hadleigh Christmas market on the 3rd December 2022. Consultants will be on hand to discuss options and take on board feedback. Please come along to the market if you wish to talk about transport options in and around Hadleigh further. Details of the consultation process, will be shared by the Town Council on the lead up, and during the consultation. Please keep an eye out for details as they are shared.

Hadleigh Craft Club

Hadleigh Craft Club meets every Tuesday during term time from 9.30 to noon at the Ansell Centre, Market Place, Hadleigh IP7 5DL. We’d love some new members to join us making and chatting. We’ve just made the Tiskele or Tiskele balls shown in the picture and have plans to make small stitched bags, Christmas gift bags and learn tips for making hand writing on our handmade cards, just that bit better!

We all pay £4 each session we attend to cover the room hire, a drink, biscuits and basic materials for projects. Occasionally there may be a little extra to pay if we are making something with materials which are a bit pricier. If we don’t fancy the make we’re doing jointly, we bring along our own project. Please just come along on a Tuesday at 9.30, or if you’d like to be in touch before coming, call Marion on 01473 822224

Chestnuts Woodturning Club

Chestnuts Woodturning Club meets the third Thursday of every month (November meeting is on the 24th) throughout the year and we get together in the Community room of the United Reform Church Hadleigh from 7.30pm onwards. We are a small, friendly club that provides our members with the opportunity to share ideas and support on all things woodturning and other associated subjects. Approximately every other month we have expert demonstrators come along to show us techniques and projects and to answer any questions the members may have. If you would like to or are considering joining us, it doesn’t matter whether you are new to turning, just interested or already an experienced turner, please get in touch with Geoff Harris on 01473 828194 who will be delighted to hear from you.

Press release early November and Kathy Roll will be visiting businesses for quotes and images, sharing what we can offer. For more info contact kathy.roll@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk.

Parking Strategy: Recommendations from the key consultation events have been completed and are now online. https://www.babergh.gov.uk/thecouncil/consultations/current-consultations/parking-strategy There will be a speaker on this subject at the HCF meeting on 10 January 2023. Jane’s expected last guided walk of the year will be on 24 October. Gift vouchers are available for future walks and more themes are being planned. Apologies, but no dogs (except assistance/enabling dogs) can be brought on tours. Hadleigh in Bloom is still looking for volunteers. Contact Stuart Service stuart@wooltowncottages.co.uk 07982 911452

4.4 Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group Please note that face masks are required when visiting the Practice. Covid & Flu jabs are underway at the Practice and, again, everyone will be invited to attend. A limited number of appointments with doctors can now be booked online after 7pm for the following day and this has been well received. The New Pharmacy inside the Practice (anticipated to be operational by the end of October) will be for those patients living +1 mile outside Hadleigh and they will all be notified. Dispensing arrangements remain unchanged for all other patients. Full details are on the website. Funding is being sourced for two more defibrillators: one outside each practice. Two PPG members have volunteered to become trustees of the Hadleigh & Boxford Health Centre’s Charitable Trust. A promotional campaign will take place to inform about the remit of the charity so eligible patients can benefit.

4.5 St Marys Church A one-off Pop Up Pasta event will take place on Thursday 27 October during half-term. All are welcome as before. This follows the successful Pop Up Picnics over the summer holidays. English classes for Ukranians continue with a consistent 40+ attending – grateful thanks to all the volunteer teachers and those offering refreshments. Help is also in place for dealing with expiring visas and job opportunities. A hugely anticipated Old Time Music Hall event will take place on 15 October at 7pm (tickets almost sold out) – we are expecting a riotous evening!

Works to the Vestry: we await Faculty approval from the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) and are ready to push the button thanks to the amazing generosity of The Friends of St Mary’s who are funding the majority of the works for this project. The upstairs Sacristy now has a video link to a computer in the vestry so that displays and exhibitions can be viewed by those unable to manage the spiral staircase.

Renewal of St Mary’s: there is a meeting on 8 November with the Archdeacon, members of the DAC and various interested parties to try and move forward

plans for the extension and all the other work that it is hoped to achieve. As winter approaches the lack of heating and prospect of huge price rises looms large. The Deanery Garden is being well used by various community groups (the Forest School, the Scouts and others) and the old wall is being renovated by John Cunningham who is making the most marvellous job of it. The Lime Tree Project is now at an end but the information board can still be used to highlight John’s work and other relevant items of interest. The Virginia creeper is being removed from the Deanery as it is causing damage to the brickwork. Other invasive foliage will also be removed. The Deanery Tower works are still under discussion and those institutions with strong links to the Oxford Movement (Oriel College, Trinity etc) will be approached to gauge interest in forming an alliance to preserve and promote the Tower’s history.

St Mary’s Christmas Fayre – Sat 26 November: 2pm – 4pm gifts, crafts, tombola. raffle, stalls, games, refreshments, music … something for everyone from the young to the young at heart.

4.6 HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team)

HEAT’s priorities for 2023 will include greater emphasis on campaigning around local issues, working with the young and a wider engagement around river issues. Volunteers are key. The Forest School flourishes in the Deanery Garden. Volunteers are working with BDC on the Railway Walk and at Dairy Farm. Email for more details. River water quality continues to be monitored and monitoring of E Coli may be added to the mix. HEAT hopes to meet with James Cartlidge MP to discuss, inter alia, the Government’s announcement around fracking and the decision not to implement the post-Brexit ELMS schemes for agriculture.

4.7 HABIT

It was agreed that this item be dropped from Standard Updates and reported on, as required, under AOB.

4.8 Cost Of Living Concerns

BDC, HTC, ACL (Abbeycroft Leisure, who run Hadleigh Pool complex) and representatives from Churches within Hadleigh met to discuss Warm Spaces in Hadleigh. Warm Spaces are an opportunity for people to go somewhere warm, have hot drinks and sometimes food; use showers (Hadleigh Pool & Leisure only); be able to charge their electronic equipment and a have a chance to chat with people. Current venues are Hadleigh Pool & Leisure, Hadleigh Library, Hadleigh Baptish Church and the Porch Project. Other locations will be joining soon (dates and times will vary). ACL has received a Community Development Grant from BDC to assist with this and the money will be used for facilitated sessions which will run at weekends and include a variety of activities. Warm Spaces will be promoted via HTC with leaflets delivered to everyone in the town with the HCN and across various media platforms. It is hoped they will be promoted via personal networks as well. A query was raised regarding 'older persons only' sessions and this will be looked into.

5 A O B

Grateful thanks were offered to Glenn for organising watching the late Queen’s funeral for a number of people.

Benton End House and Garden Trust made a successful application to BDC to put in place fire safety requirements for a public building and to deliver community & learning projects over the next six months. They will work with HEAT, the Scouts, vulnerable adults from Together Tuesday and the Christopher Centre in Sudbury and workshops for garden design students at Suffolk Rural College.

There has been wide interest for the role of Head Gardener and they hope to have this post filled from early 2023. For more information Benton End will have a table at the Town’s Christmas Market on 3 December.

The Defibrillator training sessions at HP&L are now fully booked for 2022 but sessions will be announced for 2023.

The Old School is hosting the book launch of “Tales of Hadleigh’s Great War” with a talk by Nigel Crisp, the author, on Remembrance Day Friday 11 November at 7pm. Mark Brennan will also be there to introduce the evening. The Old School will be open for sales on Saturday 12 November from 10am – 1pm.

Angel Court: Kathryn will chase the replacement of the concrete edging stones, and the repair of the water meters sinking into the tarmac on the pathway as this is the responsibility of the developers. It was repeated that repairs to items on roads (eg. the displaced metal posts behind the Co-Op) should be reported on the SCC website (Highways) via their reporting tool (which is very easy to use).

St Mary’s Monthly Craft Market: First Friday of the month, 9.30 – 12 noon. Anyone who wishes to book a table to sell their crafts or produce at £5 a table, email jessicanevard@btinternet.com for details. All tables must be booked in advance. All funds to St Mary’s.

Pictures/photos representing 2022 should be emailed to Janesnowdonjane@hotmail.co.uk - for her pictorial Review of the Year at the December meeting.

The meeting closed at 5.30pm

NEXT MEETING: Tuesday 8 November 2022 @ 4:15pm. Hadleigh Pool and Leisure.

Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club

The year is simply whizzing past and the Hares have been very busy representing the club at a variety of races this year including many UK Half Marathons, Marathons and Ultra Marathons. Well done to everyone who has taken part so far, including (shown below): Katrina Rigby (Mayflower Half Marathon & Stour Valley Marathon), Geraldine Suckling (Brighton Marathon & Colchester Half Marathon), Jo Sargent (Mayflower Half Marathon, Haverhill Marathon and Run to the Sea Brighton 50k Ultra Marathon), Stuart Hunt (Mayflower Half Marathon), Steve Hunt (Mayflower Half Marathon & Stour Valley Marathon) and Nathalie Hooper (London Landmarks Half Marathon & Stowmarket Half Marathon). Also Amanda Dunn (Boston (UK) Marathon & Ridley Round Trail Half Marathon) and Aden Bell (Mali Half Marathon, Eastbourne Half Marathon, Stowmarket Half Marathon & Edinburgh Marathon)

The first Sunday in October had just seen several members take part in the London marathon, both in London and virtually around the local area so well done to those. A special mention to Rachel Bodsworth who represented the club in our ballot place and did a fantastic time of 4.05. Well done Rachel!

But it hasn’t all been hard work. July saw several Hares join other clubs from the Ipswich and surrounding areas to take part in the Big Hoot Town trail run, taking in all of the lovely owl statues and raising funds for St Elizabeth Hospice. The route covered several miles and we all enjoyed a much needed drink afterwards!

After a break of 2 years, the Ellisons Ipswich Eikeden relay event was finally back at Woodbridge School and true to course, it was a baking hot day! We had 3 senior and 2 junior teams taking part and they all did superbly considering the heat. The aim of the relays is for the team members to run a total of 26.2 miles ie marathon distance between them, and the Juniors run 1 mile each. Even though the course is relatively flat, it was still challenging, but the atmosphere and support from all the local clubs was great. Out of 142 teams, our mens team of Steve Hunt, Glen Avis, Aden Bell, Ryan McNeil, John Jousiffe and Joel Bamsey came 40th overall with a combined time of 3:07:50. Our ladies team of Sam Cooper, Nathalie Hooper, Rachel Bodsworth,

Amanda Dunn, Belinda Godbold and Vicki Tapp came 53rd with a time of 3:33:00.

Finally our mixed team of David Miller, Brian Airlie, Jo Sargent, Sam Tapp , Julia Bilotta and Geraldine Suckling came 134th with a time of 4:22:00. In the Junior heats there were 40 teams. Our over 12 team of Daniel Cooper, Harry Alexander, Laila McNeill and Ella Baalham came 22nd overall with a time of 31 minutes and the under 11 team of Felix Clover, Isaac Miller, Elissia Bell and Pippa Alexander were 34th with a time of 36 minutes. A great all-round team effort!

And now we’re busy preparing for our very own 5 and 10 mile Road Race and Junior 2k Fun Run, being held on Sunday 20th November 2022. The Turners Blinds and Shutters Hadleigh 10 and the John Chisnall Hadleigh 5 takes place at 11am and will start and finish at Hadleigh United Football Club. The races follow undulating country roads through Layham and Shelley and thanks to the support of our sponsors, comes with a finisher medal for all races. The Plant Parts 2k Junior Fun Run starts at 10am from Toppesfield Bridge and all runners will also receive a medal! Entries for all 3 are now open so go to racesonline.uk and sign up today!

As always, we can’t hold this without the support and help of our members, supporters and local community and will need the usual army of volunteers to help on the day. If you can help in any way on the day please contact our race director at races@hadleigh-hares.co.uk.

Grateful thanks to our Sponsors

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre

The joys of being back in business! Chapelstone Developments, our builders, have done a superb job on the extension so all the, ahem, rubbish in my room can be absorbed in its new home, leaving Babs and myself to laud it over the newly empty space. We are loving having our riders back. Here’s Freya being helped to mount Ruby on her first day back in October.

I notice that Tea with a Pony started up with two gentleman from the T.L.C. care home in Halstead. They were able to settle down in the back yard at first, due to the ponies being unable to use it whilst the building work was finishing.

My picture shows Peter literally having his tea with Squidgy who is having hers off his knees!

We have sadly said goodbye to Roddy who never managed to turn himself into an RDA pony and have welcomed a new 13 yr. old tricoloured mare to the team, Indy. She is very calm and interested in her new position, an old mate of Ruby’s, which makes for a happy combination.

New volunteers continue to offer their time which is brilliant. We are still running a waiting list for riders but it’s never too late to get your name down if you would like to us a try.

Our next fundraiser is on November 26th at Hadleigh United Football Club. It’s our Christmas Bingo: tickets £10.00. Then we look forward to the Carol Service on 3rd December to which all the Shelley family is invited. Website: www.shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172
