Looking forward to Remembrance Day, the poppies so lovingly made for our display on St Peter’s Church Tower have all been removed from the huge nets and can be collected from the Tourist Information Office in The Town Hall from 25th October. We are suggesting a donation for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. We will have held the Poppy Launch outside the Town Hall on Saturday 30th hopefully the poppy appeal will be well supported this year.

I recently attended the Civic Service for the Mayor of Ipswich in St Maryle Tower Church. It was great to meet Rev Tom Mumford who was our Curate at St Gregory’s Church, he is their new Priest, we will miss him so much. Fortunately, we have the Reverend Chris Eyden who gives a cracking sermon. He will be caring for our parish until we have a new incumbent. I spent a wonderful day in the Cathedral in Bury-at Edmunds attending the Graduation Ceremony for the 2020 and 2021 students. Their achievements during such an unprecedented time were indeed something to be proud of. I hope they fulfil all their ambitions in the future.

The Long Melford Historical & Archaeological Society will hold their third meeting of the season on Thursday the 18th November, when Peter Thorogood will reveal the history of local clergyman Reverend Charles Martyn.

Meetings are held at the Old School Community Centre and commence at 7.30pm. Visitors are very welcome to attend for just £3 per talk and annual membership is just £10 per year.

Sudbury Dramatic Society 2021 Panto Puss In Boots Sudbury Dramatic Society are delighted to announce that this year’s Quay Theatre Christmas pantomime is Puss in Boots written and directed by local author and actor Phil Osborn, on from 26th December to 3rd January with a mix of matinee and evening performances.

You think you know the story of Puss in Boots, right? Well Phil’s version may differ a little from the story you know. The residents of Schaumbegraben are not happy! Roger the Ogre is taxing everyone for everything, so the Burgher and his Clerk decide to organise a music festival to cheer everyone up. What could possibly go wrong?

The Miller brothers, Arthur, Dusty and Windy, are each given gifts by their father and one of those gifts turns out to be a Very Unusual One. Cerys, a beautiful young Welsh lass, and her mother, Megan, on a sightseeing holiday in the area, are enjoying the local views and learning about the local customs. Will Arthur meet Cerys, fall in love, make his fortune and live happily ever after with the girl of his dreams? Come along to find out and enjoy all the usual mix of Panto fun along the way!

As in Sudbury Dramatic Society’s last pantomime, Sleeping Beauty in 2019, we are designating one performance as a Relaxed Performance, which proved successful last time, and which will be held on Sunday 2nd January at 11am.

A Relaxed Performance is aimed to be more accessible and non-threating to audience members and reduce stress and anxiety in a more open environment to enable them to enjoy the show. Lighting and sound levels will be adjusted, the house lights will remain, and all those loud bangs, flashes and pyrotechnics will be reduced or removed. A chill out space will also be available if the performance becomes overwhelming for anyone, including those small children who are terrified by the baddie and invariably end up bursting into tears!

Puss in Boots is on at The Quay Theatre from Sunday 26th December 2021 to Monday 3rd January 2022, with a relaxed performance on Sunday 2nd January 2022 at 11am. Elmsett Primary School Christmas Tree Festival St Gregory’s Sudbury 7th – 11th December 2021 The Coronavirus forced us to cancel our previous attempt to stage our eighteenth Christmas Tree Festival. Not to be cowed and hoping to give the town a really memorable Christmas boost, Sudbury Rotary Club is determined to launch our Christmas Tree Festival next month.

This event provides a wonderful showcase for your organisation, charity, business, school, church. As you know, places at the Festival are greatly sought after, and we recommend that you apply as soon as possible for a tree, as trees will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.

This year there will be a number of differences from previous Festivals.

Firstly, please note that the event will take place in St Gregory’s Church on the Croft (St Peter’s will be closed for its major face-lift).

Secondly, the Festival will run from Tuesday to Saturday, 7th to 11th December.

Thirdly, because of the restrictions Covid-19 places upon us, we are having to redesign the event to make it as safe as possible for exhibitors as well as for visitors. For example, there will be one-way traffic between the rows of trees, with adequate spacing to ensure safety for everyone.

Setting up will also be more strictly organised than usual on Monday 6th December, with dismantling from 3pm to 5pm on Saturday 11th and 8am to 11am on Sunday 12th. Refreshments and entertainment will probably have to be on a reduced scale. What doesn’t change, however, is that we would love you to take part once again.

On the positive side, we hope that we can have the same number of trees as usual – let’s make it 100 again!

We hope that these new arrangements will reassure you of the safety of the event and that you will be keen to put on as great a show as we always have. More details nearer the time.

The cost per tree is £16 for non-commercial exhibitors and £30 for commercial enterprises. As usual the tree remains your property after the event. No money will be banked before the opening.

“Suffolk’s Greatest Gig”

50 years after the legendary Led Zeppelin concert at St. Matthew’s Baths in Ipswich, often described as “Suffolk’s Greatest Gig” a limitededition poster featuring photographs taken at the concert has been published, with the profits going to the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.

The pictures were taken by Nigel Rea, who at the time was working as a director/cameraman for Boulton-Hawker Films based at Hadleigh. “I remember smuggling my camera in because there were rumours that Led Zeppelin’s manager had been confiscating cameras and putting them in a bucket of water. The negatives remained in my attic for nearly 30 years until a bootleg of the concert was discovered which put the gig in the spotlight. Some of the pictures have never been published before.”

The band had just returned from touring Japan and the USA and came to Ipswich to fulfil a long-standing booking in support of their 4th album.

Described as a very intimate gig, the swimming pool had been boarded over and the pictures show just how small the stage was for one of the world’s biggest bands.

The band are depicted at various stages during the concert with Jimmy Page playing a double-necked Gibson guitar and later playing his guitar with a violin bow. There is also an acoustic set with the band members sitting at the front of the stage with the audience standing within touching distance of the rock legends.

The poster also has the set list from the night which changed from gig to gig. The 15 songs promoting their 4th album included the first outings of Stairway to Heaven, two very rare encore performances of Weekend and Gallows Pole.

This limited-edition poster costs £15 and will be available from Keith Avis Printers in Hadleigh from 5th November with profits donated to EACH.

St Peter’s Update So for perhaps the third time in its long history, St Peter’s is closed to the people of Sudbury – this time for urgent repairs and some much needed improvements. We had a grand send off party for St Peter’s on Sunday 12th September complete with the lowering of the flag to the accompaniment of Trish Drawbridge on bagpipes. It was an emotional moment for many of us who have worked so long and so hard on the St Peter’s project.

Re-opening in 2023 Sudbury will have a building that is secure for the next 100 years or so and with a fine set of toilets inside. So many people will be so pleased with this. Of course the toilets are not the only improvement, the rather ugly chair store will be opened up to show off a very fine wooden altar and stained glass window. The chairs themselves will be replaced with much more modern ones which stack much better on dollies that we can all wheel around. When not in use they will hide behind the pulpit.

When you enter the “new” St Peter’s the plan is that you will have a much larger draft proof lobby, no more west wind blasting its way through the building, and once through the glass lobby doors you will have a larger modern kitchen on your left with access up to a gallery. From the gallery which will stretch across the width of the building you will have a wonderful view over St Peter’s. The gallery itself has been cleverly designed so it is narrower in the middle section, you will hardly see it when you enter the building.

Having entered the building and gone to admire the previously hidden fine wooden altar you will turn round to look back at the gallery. This will be perhaps the finest “new” view of the building, you will see the gallery stretching across the width of the building, made almost entirely of wood, floating within the structure of the building, and including a wonderful wooden screen which while modern is still in keeping with its medieval surroundings.

But all this is in the future and we all know that things are not quite as straightforward as they used to be what with Brexit, Covid, labour shortages and sky high increases in materials costs. For now the work being carried out in St Peter’s is a little more hum drum, but very very necessary. Medieval buildings do not tend to come with their own plumbing and that is the first part of the project, more water to come in and a large pipe to take toiletty things out. To get pipes into a modern building you need to drill a large hole through the foundations which will have been designed in accordance with modern building regulations. Medieval buildings in contrast generally had footings (which are a shallow type of foundation) whose design was more likely to be based on what worked for a previous project the builders had been involved in. You always worry with a medieval building that the footings will not be thick enough, deep enough or strong enough to take a large hole being drilled (technically the word is cored apparently) through them. Pleased to say that St Peter’s has passed that test – so far so good for the toilets. Next up pipes need to be trenched in across the front of St Peter’s from the manhole cover in front of McColls and then up into St Peter’s.

Whenever you are digging close to a medieval building you always need to be aware that any archaeological find will stop the work immediately while the experts are brought in to assess what has been found. This can seriously delay the project, so far though nothing has been discovered. But then the roads and pavements on Market Hill have been laid and re-laid so many times over the centuries that it is likely that any archaeological remains are buried deep down, if they still exist at all. Certainly the archaeological test pits dug in Sudbury in 2014 did indicate that Market Hill was not developed until the start of building St Peter’s sometime in the 14th century.

But, onto a more modern question – why have the clockfaces on St Peter’s all stopped at 12 o’clock. This was in fact done deliberately to protect the clock mechanism as the electricity to the building will be cut-off at various times during the construction works and this could damage the rather delicate internal workings of the clock with its four faces.

The St Peter’s project would not have happened without the contribution of so many people and local businesses. The Churches Conservation Trust who are managing the project, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Babergh District Council and the New Anglia Local Enterprise Board who together have funded much of the project. Mackman Group who have provided much needed marketing expertise (and a fine website) , the Friends of St Peter’s who contributed to the funding of the project and who also managed St Peter’s for so many years. It is the people of Sudbury though who made St Peter’s, from the 14th century when it was built to now the 21st century when this project will secure its future.

Sudbury Community Christmas Lunch We are very pleased to be able to return to The Masonic Hall this year for our Christmas day Community lunch.

This lunch project was started 18 years ago to support those that would normally be alone on Christmas day, since then due to many reasons it has grown to include couple and families that may be struggling and home deliveries to the housebound. It’s always a joyous day with lots of good food, laughter and fun.

We serve a traditional Christmas lunch/vegetarian Christmas lunch and other dietary needs can be met on request.

The lunch is open to everyone. Transport can be arranged for those that need it, kindly provided by Go Start and wonderful volunteers. The lunch is funded by generous donations from Waitrose, various Masonic lodges, The Freemans Trust, The Mary Brown fund and the community. We are also fortunate in the support we receive from local traders especially Coleman’s Butchers and Angelo Smith’s Jewellers North Street Sudbury.

News from The Christopher Centre: This month the focus is on our health and well being groups. We are very pleased to welcome back the diabetic eye screening programme to The Christopher Centre. They will be with us from October until mid November, after a break they will return in March. It’s always interesting talking to the patients about their experiences of when the Centre was the notorious Christopher pub or about former businesses that they remember in town from years gone by.

We have two chair-based yoga classes at the Centre. The Otago class with Chris on a Tuesday, a chair-based exercise programme which promotes strength and balance. It is suitable for everyone and also has a social aspect.

Karen’s chair yoga class is on Wednesdays. Karen looks at the spiritual and well as the physical side of well being. Again, this class has a social aspect.

Alison’s Weigh and Chat group also meets on a Wednesday. A very lively group. Lots of advice on weight loss and all aspects of dietary needs.

Alison has many years of experience working for weight watchers.

The Leonard Cheshire Trust is part of the Opportunity Suffolk programme to help those over 24yrs to get back into work. Julia is at the Centre every Wednesday. To qualify for this programme, you must have been out of work for 6mths, accessing services in Suffolk and have a disability or longterm health problem. Sudbury Symphony Orchestra – we are back Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is back and running again and everyone in the orchestra is so pleased to be playing again. We restarted rehearsals in May and having shaken off all the cobwebs our next concert is on Sunday November 28. St Peter’s in Sudbury is now closed until 2023 so we had to take the decision to relocate our concerts to the magnificent church of St Peter and St Paul in Lavenham – that’s the very large church on your left as you enter Lavenham from Sudbury. The move is maybe not quite on the scale of a world tour but it does feel a little like one.

Our first concert in two years will be a something to celebrate and we have chosen a programme to match. We start with Project15_Layout 1 20/02/2020 13:41 Page 1 Rossini’s Overture to the Italian Girl in Algiers. This is a fun and sparkling piece which unusually starts with the strings quietly plucking their tune out. Not easy to do. The oboe then comes in with a lovely solo passage work and we then get into the Rossini we know and love. Fast dramatic melodic.

For our soloist piece we welcome back Catherine May, a world class soprano who absolutely bowled the audience over the last time she performed with us. She will be singing Vocalise by Rachmaninoff and two solo arias from Rossini operas, “Una voce poco fa” from the Barber of Seville and “Sombre forêt” from William Tell. The Rachmaninoff will be six minutes of hypnotic beauty, if you have never heard it before, do come, it will be something you will remember for many years. The two Rossini arias display his skill in writing dramatic and attractive arias and give the soloist a vehicle to showcase their vocal skill and ability to communicate the emotion of the aria.

Catherine enjoys a successful career as a soprano soloist in both opera and in concert, stage musician and teacher. Her performances have taken her throughout Britain, Europe and the Americas having performed with many opera companies, including the English National Opera. As a concert soloist she has performed with orchestras such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and as a stage musician she has performed with the likes of the National Theatre. She has also performed at the Wigmore Hall with Graham Johnson. And in case you are wondering how our little country orchestra can attract such a great soloist – she just happens to be married to our conductor Matt Andrews.

Our final work for the evening is Tchaikovsky’s 2nd Symphony. This work has more folk song themes in it than any of his other symphonies. It opens with a delicate and haunting horn solo and the whole work alternates between haunting and jaunty, with a little bit of swing thrown in. The solo lines throughout the work are pure magic – with great contrasts between the lyric passages of the solo instruments and the rousing full orchestra sections. This is a symphony that is always a joy to perform and listen to and you leave humming the themes that Tchaikovsky has so cleverly woven into the work.

Tickets for this concert are £12 for adults and £2 for 16s and under and will be available from the end of October from the Sudbury Tourist Information (in the Town Hall) and the Guildhall in Lavenham.

Sudbury resident Dr Lin Berwick MBE is totally blind, has Cerebral Palsy Quadriplegia, partial Hadleigh, hearing loss, and is IP7 6BQ 7 Lady Lane Industrial Estate, Suffolk a permanent wheelchair user who has spent the whole of her life within the care system. Firstly, through the help of loving parents, then, with her husband, Ralph, and latterly, with care provided by private, 24/7 live-in carers.

Lin is now in her seventies having challenged the opinions of the medical profession that told her and her family that she would not live beyond her teens. She became a leading disability campaigner as a writer, freelance journalist, broadcaster and lecturer and today is still defying all the odds.

As a trained psychotherapeutic counsellor her latest book “On a Count of Three” draws on experiences that she has had to deal with in many different areas, such as grief and loss, and a striving to survive when others may want her to stay within a ‘sick’ system. Lin is not one for staying in bed - she still has an active mind and wants to experience the world in all its fullness, despite her disabilities, making the most of what time she has left.

Lin’s book also describes the many aspects of care from the clients’ and families’ perspectives and her own struggles, pitfalls and problems that she and and her carers have to deal with on a daily basis. Sometimes her own life has been chaotic, and in terms of care – traumatic. “When the carer is good at their job, it works wonderfully well. But when the carer has no real concept of how to deal with pain, feelings, and the completion of tasks, then it can be a recipe for disaster.”

August will be another massive month for cricket, with three Ashes Tests and lots of important games at the Meadow. The Under-19s take centre stage with five matches in their T20 competition. After finishing runners up last year they will have the chance to play in the Finals day on home soil, as we are delighted to have been chosen to host this event on Sunday September 1st.

Councillor Jessica Carters reports:

It has been 5 months since I was elected on Suffolk County Council to represent Sudbury, I am incredibly proud to have been chosen by the people of Sudbury to be your representative. I have been working my hardest to get things done for Sudbury and have focused a lot of my attention on the roads, green open spaces and young people.

The full town council holds a meeting every month where I share my report with them, I have been uploading these onto my Facebook page ‘Councillor Carter’ and you can read through them there. However, I would like to share with you a summary of my October report.

On the 20/09/2021 SCC publicly apologised for their short fallings regarding an independent SEND review, 500 parents and carers of children and young people with SEND were horrified to read SCC views. As the opposition we were briefed on the matter hours after the press were even though there was sufficient time before hand.

Having read the review and action plan there are issues which need answering now, not in December. My group and I asked for an emergency meeting to go through the report and Action Plan but this was denied, the next meeting is to take place on 9/12/2021 However, as a mother of a SEND child, I will not let this go lightly. I am encouraging any families going through any SEND / EHCP related issues to get in touch and I will support you where I can.

I would like to remind residents and that If they are having highway related issues these can be reported through the online SCC highways reporting tool or you can contact me directly and I will report them on your behalf. I’ve had potholes filled in Queens Road, Siam Place and more. A town centre bollard has been replaced and a new bollard has been ordered for Burkitts Lane. SID’s (Speed Indicator Devices) have been placed along Newton Road, Melford Road and Cross Street with one due to go up in Cats Lane, these will record speed limits so I can then prove that speed reductions are needed and get something done. I have requested one for Ballingdon Street and Gainsborough Street.

SCC has funded grants to Sudbury charities such as the Kernos Centre and The Porch Project. The Phoenix Centre has been working towards transiting to a family hub and I will meet with them next month.

I hold regular surgeries on Sudbury Market on the 2nd Thursday of every month between 9am and 3pm, If you want to meet in person but cannot make this please get in touch and we will arrange a time to suit you.

With garden picnics now fading into memory, Sudbury Rotarians still took the opportunity to get some fresh air – and gentle exercise! - when they met for a ramble around Long Melford, ending with a pub lunch at The Hare on 25 October.

They also got even more gentle(?) exercise by planting thousands of purple crocuses in the area of the War Memorial near St Gregory’s Church and distributed bags of crocus corms to local schools with an explanation of the ‘End Polio’ campaign and how important the worldwide ‘Purple for Polio’ initiative is in eradicating this deadly disease across the developing world.

Rotary members have been meeting at The Mill Hotel since September and have enjoyed each other’s company again, after such a long, enforced break from face-to-face lunches. The Club has also set up hybrid arrangements so that anyone who cannot get to the Mill can join Experience the meetings on line.

On 1 November, Roger Green (Club Secretary) will be speaking about the History of Sudbury, on 15 November it will be Darren Couchman telling us more about the Robin Cancer Trust; on 22 there will be a social event and on 26 November Club members will be involved in the Christmas Fair and Lights Switch-on in Sudbury.

Sudbury Rotary has recently sponsored the Sudbury in Bloom planters opposite The Library. The Club will also be working with the Town Council and sponsoring a specially created ‘snowman’ as part of the Christmas decorations in the town, which members will have painted and decorated.

Plans are now well-advanced for the Christmas Tree Festival, to take place in St Gregory’s Church. The Festival will open on Tuesday 7 December and run until Saturday 11 December.

Yarn Worx Have you visited our yarn shop yet? We are located on the industrial estate in Hadleigh which means we have plenty of free parking. Since opening we have had lots of customers visit us from far and wide. On the same day recently we had one customer come from Devon and another from Milton Keynes.

Our first Learn to Knit course was a roaring success with 7 people attending. Each of them had a very enjoyable day and went away with lots of goodies and some newly learnt skills. We are busy planning lots of new classes for the new year and will soon have a dedicated page on our website (yarnworx.com) with all of the details.

With Christmas fast approaching we are busy putting together some new gifts for the knitter or crocheter in your life. We will also shortly be launching this year’s Christmas Eve Box. Do pay us a visit to grab one of these!

Thank you to everyone that has dropped in to see us so far. It has been fantastic to see the reaction from customers when they first see our wall of colour at the back of the shop.

A reminder that our knit groups take place on a Tuesday evening from 7pm to 9pm and on a Thursday morning from 10am to 1pm.

HADLEIGH FIREWORK

Garden centre owner publishes book to highlight how plants and nature can aid recovery from depression and illness Hannah Powell suffered burn out and was diagnosed with a Functional Neurological Disorder in 2009.

She has now published a book called The Cactus Surgeon: Using Nature to Fix A Faulty Brain.

It’s a nature and health memoir which explores the possible reasons for Hannah’s burnout and investigates her connection with Mother Nature.

It’s a book of mindful moments, savouring the small wonders of flora and fauna. Cactus Surgeon was her dream career when she was six.

Hannah Powell, Communications & HR Director for Perrywood Garden Centres, says: “My Functional Disorder meant I would twitch and jerk in response to sound or touch. I looked like a peculiar air drummer with no rhythm. There was no information available to help me, so I found my own way to get better.

“Growing up in a garden centre, my childhood was full of nature and plants. This was in stark contrast to the concrete of London, where I became unwell. After seeking alternative therapies and moving back to the countryside, I began to feel myself again. My ‘green recovery’ followed. I believe we all benefit from having mindful moments, and this can easily be done by savouring the small wonders of nature around us.

“I wrote the book primarily to help others. I want to raise awareness of functional neurological disorders and I’ve found that every time I open up and tell my story it encourages somebody else to ask for help.”

Functional Neurological Disorders affect one in three people attending neurology outpatient in clinics.

October’s Advice Column

My energy supplier recently went under and the new tariff I’ve been put on is far more than I used to pay. I’ve heard energy prices are set to rise further and I’m just not sure I can afford it. What help can I get, or small changes can I make around my home to help save some money this winter?

The cost of energy is very high at the moment and it’s causing many people to worry. Normally we would suggest switching to a better deal, but the situation is very difficult at the moment and there aren’t a lot of good deals out there.

However, there are still other small ways you can keep your bills down.

Little everyday things can help, such as making sure televisions and other electronic devices are switched off and not left on standby; washing clothes on a lower temperature; and only filling the kettle with the water you need.

Turning down your main thermostat by 1 degree can save you around £60 on your energy bill. Spending one minute less in the shower each day could save a family of four £75 a year on energy and water bills. The Government’s Simple Energy website has more tips like this.

You’re right in another way about bills going through the roof- and the walls. One way of cutting costs in the long run is to invest in good insulation if you can afford to. If you’re renting, ask your landlord to do this.

You may be able to get financial support to help insulate your home under the Energy Company Obligation scheme https://www.ofgem.gov. uk/environmental-and-social-schemes/energy-company-obligationeco Contact your energy supplier for more information. If you’re in a household that’s not connected to the gas grid you may also be able to receive help under the Home Upgrade Grant Scheme through your local authority.

There’s some financial support available for paying your energy bills, depending on your situation. For example, if you’re a pensioner with a low income or receive Universal Credit or other means-tested benefits, you may be entitled to the Warm Home Discount. This gives you £140 a year towards your bills. Check https://www.gov.uk/the-warm-home-discountscheme the Government website to find out if you can claim it.

The Government recently announced a £500m fund to support households this winter so keep a look out for announcements about how this could help you. In England, it will be distributed by Local Authorities.

Holistic Wednesdays at the exploringU centre for well being.

Just Talk Mind and Body JustTalk2019, a counselling service based in Sudbury, is excited to launch its new initiative of Holistic Wednesdays, Just Talk Mind & Body.

Over the past year and a half, the country has been in the midst of a pandemic which has taken its toll on not only the physical health but also the mental health of both children and adults. Just Talk 2019 is a non profit making arm of ExploringU Counselling, and provides affordable counselling for those who cannot afford to pay the usual hourly rates of a qualified counsellor. It does this by offering sessions with trainee counsellors, therefore also supporting a new generation of counsellors starting out in this crucial area. Just Talk 2019, relies on donations to its bridge fund in order to be able to subsidise the counselling provided to those who desperately need it. Some of the trainee counsellors and their families have recently held sponsored walks to help raise money to keep this vital service going.

JustTalk2019 are now expanding their service to also include holistic treatments for disabled and able bodied people, offering full body massage, facials, Indian head massage, deep tissue massage, reiki and hot stones massage. The experienced therapist will be using natural plant-based products that are also vegan friendly and will be providing treatments on Wednesdays at the ExploringU Centre for Well Being in Sudbury.

When she began Just Talk 2019, CEO Glenda Roberts did so with the philosophy of Ubuntu which has the idea of community at the heart of it. Part of the money raised from the treatments will be donated to the Bridge Fund and so whilst using this service people will also be supporting the mental health of the local community. In launching this new venture, Glenda hopes to provide complete care for both mind and body whilst helping the community to care for each other by making sure mental health care is available for all.

Hello from Sudbury Library We hope you’re all staying well and keeping warm during these chillier days.

Covid rules have been relaxed but we are being encouraged to remain vigilant. The staff here are still wearing face coverings in the library and we ask politely that our customers do the same. We have the NHS QR code available at the front door and the sanitizer is still there for use before you enter the building.

Most of our groups have now been reintroduced and we can now offer Toptime on a Tuesday afternoon at 2.30pm and Wordplay story-telling, songs and rhymes for our smallest customers on a Thursday morning at 10.30am. We have our Play sessions immediately afterwards till midday.

Toptime is a social group for adults and we have a range of activities and events, including a book group, in place. We have two speakers booked for the end of November and we’ll be promoting these individually nearer the time. Call into the library or look us up on social media or our website for more details.

On top of that Lego club has restarted and you can call in on a Saturday afternoon to join in with this activity at 2.30pm. This costs just 50p per child. We have also reinstated our free activities on our Sunday Fundays.

Don’t forget to call in during half term, when we’ll have activity packs for sale at £2.00 each, plus colouring sheets and an Alice in Wonderland themed wall in our children’s library.

A new free group has been set up for youngsters who want to join a Book Group. Our first meeting was held on Saturday October 16th and went very well. If you’d like to join the book group, call in with your library card and ask the staff for a copy of the book. Our first title is Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and we’ll be meeting on 13th November to chat about this and get a copy of the next book.

Perrywood Garden Centre is always looking for more ways to help their team improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

Perimenopause and menopause can traditionally be unspoken topics in the workplace, with many suffering symptoms ranging from heart palpitations and hot flushes to brain fog and difficulty in concentrating.

Celebrities including Davina McCall and Mariella Frostrup have been working hard to make a change, and with this in mind, Hannah (Communication and HR Director) sourced ‘Preparing for the Perimenopause and Menopause’ by Dr. Louise Newson from local independent book shop, Red Lion Books in Colchester.

Hannah says, “It’s the best book I have come across on this subject, which affects so many women. It gives some really clear information about how to liaise with your GP if you have symptoms, to ensure you get the care and solutions you need. Dr. Louise Newson works at a menopause clinic so she really knows what she is talking about.

“At Perrywood we offer women suffering symptoms a wide range of support including an employee assistance helpline and access to therapies like CBT, workplace adjustments and the opportunity to come together and chat about their experiences. We hope that by talking about this as an organisation we can make sure that anyone who needs our support feels they can come and ask for it.”

Books were offered to Tiptree and Sudbury team members interested in ‘taking charge’ of their menopause journey, or who wanted a copy for a family member. Forty out of 200 colleagues have taken home a copy.

The Hive Community Hub – key handover ceremony Local charity Hive is delighted to report that, after several years of fundraising, they now own the former Christ Church URC in School Street, Sudbury. Chair of Hive, Shirley Moore and trustee Gareth Cole signed the contract of ownership in late September and a ceremony took place on Tuesday, October 26, when Chair of the East of England Synod Trustees, Mr Andrew East, handed-over the keys to the building.

Mr East stated: “Following the closure of the Sudbury United Reformed Church, the URC Trust (the legal owner of the church building after the closure) is delighted that the building has been purchased

by HIVE, thereby ensuring it remains available for community use to the benefit of the town.” Mr East was joined by Andrea Pittock, Head of Grant Programmes at Suffolk Community Foundation, through which major funding towards the project has been donated.

Work on the building has been underway since the purchase was completed on 1 October, clearing overgrown vegetation, reconnecting electrics, gas and water and preparing the building for use. Local residents have already commented on how pleased they are that the spire light has been switched on again. The Hive board of trustees are grateful to electrician Jerry Maynard for donating his time to reconnect the electrics to make this possible. The trustees have worked hard to get the building ready, so that it can be used by various local community and voluntary groups as quickly as possible. There are also new signs around the building which state ‘Hive Community Hub’.

The new Hive Hub will offer medium to large sized rooms for hire to a number of groups, including those which used the building before its closure at the end of 2017. Some groups have already confirmed their bookings of Friars Hall and meeting rooms, and others are pencilled into the diary.

Most recently, the project has been supported by the East of England Coop, from their Co-op Community Cares Fund, although more fund-raising will be needed to deal with repairs and renovations over time.

There are ambitious plans for the future of the Hive Community Hub, and a formal opening ceremony, to which all funders will be invited, will take place in late November. An ‘open day’ inviting local people to look around the building and see what is has to offer is also planned.
