For over 25 years The Bridge Project has been a part of the furniture in Sudbury town centre. Interestingly, if ever ask what know of The Bridge answer, at best, know a others maybe know from kitchen at AFC Sudbury perhaps were a customer of very popular Scone Round. do all of these things (the scones are coming back.) but also have big and exciting plans to do more. By the time you read this, the construction of our new purpose-built site next to AFC Sudbury will be well underway. Our building on Gainsborough Street has looked after us well for over 20 years but the escalating cost of maintaining the building coupled with the inaccessibility of a 4-storey property led us to consider a move. Our new home has been designed just for us and the extra space (all of it wheelchair accessible) will enable our students to enjoy a greater breadth of education and experiences. We will enjoy the outdoor space available. In time, this will enable us to grow our own produce, promote conservation, build nature trails and so on. The potential is limitless. At the front and centre of all that we do at The Bridge is our community of students (this is the term we use for our day service users). At every opportunity we have a student contributing and working toward the success and sustainability of The Bridge. This can be through working in our kitchen preparing meals for the delivery service, helping to deliver the meals, making items to sell or working in one of our shops serving customers.

The newly formed Heritage Trust with generous help from Long Melford Parish Council recently commissioned an archaeological geophysical survey of both Cricket and Football Pitches. The results proved tantalizing, indicating the presence of previously unknown roads and features, in addition confirming recent archaeological work conducted by the group.
Meanwhile the Long Melford Heritage Trust have launched a new website covering all aspects of the history and heritage of Long Melford. This can be found at melfordheritage.org.uk Kenneth Dodd (Trustee)
How likely is it that your property transaction will fall-through?
Holmes & Hills has a large team of experienced property lawyers who are supported by Planning Law, property litigation, agricultural and commercial specialists, meaning we resolve problems when they arise and keep transactions on track, reducing the risk of a property transaction falling through and securing a successful completion.
Terence the Terrier is 2000 Years Old Christened Terrence by the Archaeological excavation team of Long Melford Heritage Trust, the skull of a dog was recently found during an archaeological excavation in the village. Confirmed to be of a terrier like breed by a local veterinary surgeon, it was recovered from the foundations of a rare Iron Age Building along with fine Gallo Belgic pottery. As dogs held a special place in the ritual and iconography of Iron Age and Roman Britain its placement could be of special significance.

Those using Holmes & Hills’ conveyancing services benefit from a materially higher successful completion rate compared to the national average. Your transaction has an increased chance of successfully completing when Holmes & Hills is advising and representing you in your property transaction.
What number of property transactions fall-through? Rightmove report that, on average across the country, approximately 25% of property transactions fall-through**. It is a much higher percentage than most buyers and sellers expect it to be. This means, subject to your choice of law firm, your transaction faces a 1 in 4 chance of falling-through.

The excavation was carried out by the Long Melford Heritage Trust Archaeological Team in collaboration with the Stour Valley Community Archaeology Group during July at the Long Melford Football Ground. It followed a Community Archaeological Dig by Michael Wood for the BBC Series “The Great British Story” in 2011 and at which time the program presenter Dr Carenza Lewis identified in a test pit at the football ground what was thought to be a possible ancient building.
Why do property transactions fall-through? Your transaction might fall-through for a number of reasons, most of them outside of your control. These include: your buyer finding another property; being unable to secure their mortgage; or a change in their circumstances which means they can no longer proceed with the purchase.
Partner with Holmes & Hills to secure your transaction. By working in partnership with our clients, local estate agents, mortgage brokers, and financial advisors, Holmes & Hills’ residential property lawyers will ensure a smooth transaction, whilst protecting your legal interests. In the last 12 months, Holmes & Hills have helped over 3,600 people move home and we are ready to help you, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01787 275275 and ask to speak to Paige Hornabrook or email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk.

The Mayor writes... So sad to hear of the passing of young William Leonard, a pupil at TGS. Condolences to family and friends. Unfortunately, words are never enough but my thoughts are with you. What a marvelous work by the Sudbury in Bloom team. Against all the odds they still managed to present us with a really beautiful floral display around our town. Not an easy job with such hot weather and no rain. They really deserve an award at the Anglian in Bloom presentation in September. I wish the team all the best and am keeping my fingers crossed. I attended the Sudbury Rowing Regatta. This was truly spectacular, with a great turnout. Well done to all involved I had a speaking role at a Babergh Planning Meeting, where the proposed entrance to Belle Vue Park was considered and also the Churchill Retirement Living application. Very disappointed with plans for the new entrance and ridiculous crossing at Cornard Road being given approval. However, Churchill’s application was halted mid flow due to some irregularity. Also of note is that McCabe and Abel have withdrawn (a day before application was being heard) from renovating Belle Vue House due to not being able to reach a satisfactory agreement with Churchill. Thank you to Laura Knight, Polly, (who also spoke up for our town) and the rest of the team from Belle Vue Action Group for all their hard work and dedication. Cllr. Tim Register also had a speaking role. Thank you, Tim. We love Sudbury and are concerned at the lack of open space. So many new developments but infrastructure sadly missing. Congratulations and every success to Gina and Keith on opening a Deli next to their popular Cafe at 21 North Street. Please drop in and take a look. I doubt if you will leave empty handed. 9-18 September Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture. Every September Sudbury Town Council coordinates a series of free events, guided tours and ‘open house’ activities. Please join us in celebrating our history and culture. On 11 September there will be a Civic Service at All Saints’ Church where an ancient Charter document will be rededicated. Our Tourist Information Centre is now open on Sundays - 9am to 2pm (Summer months) until 25 September. Take care of yourselves and others. If you visit our lovely meadows, please take your rubbish with you. Protect wildlife and appreciate what we have on our doorstep.

The first lecture fully illustrated with film clips and a whole film included will be an introduction and a fun look back at British films of the late 1950’s and For1960’smy first talk at WSC I thought it would be nostalgic to look back at some British films we all saw in our youth. The Ealing comedies with the wonderful Alec Guinness, Stanley Holloway, Alastair Sim and the young Peter Sellers amongst others. The early 1960’s saw the emerging so called kitchen sink dramas where for the first time normal working people’s lives were depicted. Films such as: Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960). The sixties also brought the glamour of Sean Connery’s Bond to our screens and the less glamorous spy played by Michael Caine in films like the Ipcress file. The talk would not be complete without mention of the Beatles and their film debut in a Hard Day’s Night, and the beginning of the Carry-On series of films. I think there will be something in this talk for everyone who has a love of cinema.
I am starting a new venture lecturing at West Suffolk College’s Sudbury site Film Appreciation Club 2.00pm September 14th 18-20 Cornard Road Sudbury CO10 2XA 01787 880619 sudbury@wsc.ac.uk. Please contact them directly if you wish to attend.

Cary Grant Friday September 9th 10.30 am Granary Cary Grant is one of the most accomplished and popular film actors. His debonair persona and comedic timing brought glamour and consummate skill to the screen. Loved by women and admired by men an interviewer once told him, “Everybody would like to be Cary Grant”, Grant is said to have replied, “So would I.” Important film roles : The Philadelphia Story (1940), His Girl Friday (1940), Arsenic and Old Lace (1943), An Affair to Remember (1957), but he is also remembered for being Hitchcock’s favourite male actor collaborating on Suspicion (1941), Notorious (1946), To Catch a Thief (1955), and North by Northwest (1959).
I am Simon Frampton a film maker and lecturer and have spent many happy years working in Cinema. In January 2011 I set up the Sudbury Film Club. The idea was to provide a series of lectures on the art and technique of films. Every month since then the club has met without fail even going online during the pandemic to consider the merits of individual film actors, directors, genres such as film-noir and many other film related topics. It doesn’t matter how much knowledge you have about film. The important thing is to bring like- minded people together to form a sociable group. In the words of one of our long-time members….” If you like Cinema you will love Film Club” Here is what you can expect from each meeting: An original lecture written each month covering the subject illustrated with many film clips. A full length film based on the topic and a discussion group afterwards over coffee or tea for those who desire it. Obviously you do not have to stay for all three parts of the programme!

Julia Fiona Roberts is one of America’s most popular and bankable actresses. She was one of the highest paid actresses throughout the majority of the 1990s, as well as the first half of the 2000s. Her biggest success was in the signature movie Pretty Woman (1990), She has starred in both serious films Erin Brockovich (2000) as well as fantasy films such as Hook (1991), but she is probably best known for romantic comedies such as My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997). Some of her other films include: Notting Hill (1999), Runaway Bride (1999), Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Eat Pray Love (2010), August: Osage County (2013).

With the kids home from school for the summer, I’m having to pay more for lunches and snacks. I’m worried about how I’ll put food on the table. I’m on a prepayment meter and I’m really scared we’re going to be left without any gas or electric if I can’t top up. What can I do?
You’re doing the right thing in reaching out for support and there are things you can get help with.
First of all, I’m really sorry to hear how tough things have been for you.
As a prepayment meter customer, your energy supplier will be able to give you temporary credit if you can’t afford to top up your meter. They might add this to your meter automatically, but if they don’t, you can call them and ask them to do this. If you run out of temporary credit, speak to your supplier to explain your situation. They may give you extra temporary credit if you’re struggling with living costs. There are other reasons why they might give you extra credit too, including if you’re disabled, have a long-term health condition, or you have children under the age of 5. You’ll have to pay back anything extra you get, but you can agree how to do this in a way you can afford with your supplier. As you say, the cost of living is really high but there is help available. If you pay council tax and you’re in bands A-D, you should get a payment of £150 automatically. It could take until the end of September, but if you’ve not had it already you might need to make a claim. You can check how to do this on your council’s website. You might also be able to get a fuel voucher, which you can use to add credit to your meter. Contact your local council about this. There’s more government support coming from October, including a £400 payment to help you with your energy bills. If you have a prepayment meter, you’ll be given vouchers in the first week of each month from October, via SMS text, email, or post. Make sure your energy company has your upto-date details. To help manage other costs, it’s also worth checking you’re getting all the benefits you’re entitled to. There are benefits calculators you can use online. On the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk there’s advice on how to reduce living costs and information on other ways to increase your income. The school holidays can be a really tough time and we know the food shop isn’t stretching as far. Contact your local council, to find out what extra support you can get over the holidays. If you can’t afford to buy food, Sudbury and District Citizens Advice can help you get a referral for a food bank. We know this is an extremely worrying time and everyone’s situation is different. Don’t struggle alone. If you need further support, contact Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact

Sudbury Rotary meets at Newton Green Golf Club on the first three Mondays of each month - with an optional lunch for those who wish to eat there. The fourth Monday is set aside for social events, maybe joining a ramble, visiting places of interest, or just getting together for tea and cake!

On the 15 August we heard from new member Geoff Bell with the topic of “See you in a field somewhere”: a highly entertaining talk about travels in his motor home. On 22 August, members were welcomed to lunch in the garden of Judith and Malcolm Offord. It’s always a pleasure to visit their beautiful garden and to spend time in their company. With ‘Swimming for the Disabled’ the topic of another new member (Susan Ayres) on 5 September, we then have a ‘mystery’ speaker for the 19 September when Foster Jones is organizing this. Looking forward to October, new member Dorothy Slatter will tell us that “Quilting is my Superpower” - intriguing! Under new arrangements for Sudbury Rotary, each speaker is booked by an individual member, so that topics can range across a wide area of interests. Tim McNeill is organizing the speaker for 17 October. If you are a member of a group which would like to know more about Sudbury Rotary Club, our intention as part of the international Rotary organisation to offer service above self, and how we support our communities, locally and worldwide, please do ask us to provide a speaker. You will be amazed at just how much Rotarians do, not just in our local community but across the world. If you’d be interested in joining us for lunch and to meet our members at Newton Green, then please do contact us via the web site www.sudburyrotary. com or by telephone: 07341 290415.

Looking For Gwen
At our meeting in early August, we were privileged to welcome Blake Leonard, a young carer who spoke about his role looking after his mother. We were delighted that his Mother also joined us at our meeting. Some readers may remember the youngster who appealed for Easter eggs so that these could be distributed to the young careers in this area, and that the response was overwhelming with hundreds being given. He has continued these appeals for Easter and for Christmas chocolate but storage has become quite a challenge!

Our walk on Saturday 10th Sept will start and end at Bures. The walk is quite a long one but well worth the effort. Called locally “The Dragon Walk”, it is one of our favourites. Our route from Bures will be Fysh House Farm, Highfields Farm, Dead Lane Track to Farthing Hall, the St Edmunds Way to Wissington and back to Bures on the Stour Valley Path via Wormingford. The route is about 10 miles and we will take it easy to admire the views. We will have two stops so we suggest you bring a small snack and definitely something to drink if the weather looks like being hot. The walk will take around 4 ½ hours so we should be back at the cars by around 2pm. We will meet at 0930 in the Bures village hall car park on Nayland Road, which is a sharp left turn where High Street becomes Bridge Street. The car park is a short distance down Nayland Road on the RHS. Email me for a map. If anyone needs a lift from Hadleigh please email me and I’ll try my best to put you in touch with a driver. If there are any changes to the route following our recce they will be put up on the website. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested Life at The Shelley Centre

Doors open at 11am on Saturday 10th September, these sales are always popular so don’t miss it! This month I am looking for a special person who could take on an old pal of mine. Paddy is a nine year old Yorkie dog suffering from heart failure. He needs someone who can give him the home he deserves on a one to one basis. They will have no other pets, an empty lap with lots of time and love for a delightful little dog. Paddy has a healthy appetite and still enjoys a game of ball, a walk, a good cuddle, and life in general. At the moment all he needs is one pill twice a day popped in his food. If you think you can provide the foster home Paddy needs, please leave a clear message with your name and number on 01787 210888 or email info@sesaw.co.uk. Please speak slowly so anyone can hear your contact details, even a little chap like me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua!

Full training is given to all of our volunteers. You’ll gain confidence, meet new people, learn new skills, and gain a great deal of personal satisfaction, knowing you are making a difference. Group volunteers are asked to attend a half day Zoom course (next course takes place via Zoom on Monday 12th September, 9.30am to 11am). Home-visiting volunteers are required to attend a 7 session training course (1 per week). The next course starts on Tuesday 13th September and will be held in Bramford, just outside Ipswich, which has easy access from A14 and A12. Sounds great! I’d like to find out more. What do I do next? Please email info@familiestogethersuffolk.org.uk or call 01379 678552 for more information. There is a simple on-line form to fill in, we ask for 2 references and we also do a DBS check for home visiting and group volunteers. Come and join our friendly team and help us to bring community back into the heart of parenting.

What training do I need?
BEGONE DULL CARE WITH GRIM NEWS BEHIND EVERY DOOR THE ARTS SOCIETY STOUR VALLEY has taken flight with an exciting Autumn Programme offering illustrated Monthly Talks (1 hour), Visits, Special Interest Days + a quarterly magazine and much more – all at a very reasonable cost.
• My volunteer was someone to listen, talk to, help with the children, with issues. She built my confidence and self-esteem and supported us through the tough times. What skills will I learn or develop? We would love you to utilise any skills you already have. For groups and home visiting, these can be everday skills such as budgeting, cooking, arts & crafts, or simply encouraging conversation with an adult or encouraging play with a child. We are a learning organisation, so we hold ongoing training for our volunteers in areas such as first aid, customer service, or in special project work. Here is a quote illustrating this from one of our volunteers: “Volunteering provides a fantastic opportunity to expand my skills at the same time as feeling valued in my local community. Combining this with increased social interaction and physical activity helps me to gain self-confidence and feel appreciated.”

“Everyone is asking for volunteers nowadays! I like the idea of it, but I have some questions...” How will I be helping? Whether you are visiting a family at their home, or helping at one of our family, perinatal or SEND (special educational needs) groups, you will be giving real, practical support and encouragement to families, so that they can provide a strong foundation for their childs’ future. This support is needed now more than ever and is crucial in helping families to cope, develop resilience and stay positive through perhaps the most challenging time in their lives. Does it really make a difference? Absolutely! We are currently supporting 661 families across Suffolk through our home-visiting and groups. Here are some genuine quotes from parents/carers we have supported:
• My volunteer listened. She was someone to talk to, and she supported me through several stressful times and encouraged me to achieve my goals.
• It’s a chance to get out of the house and to also meet and talk to other people. It helps with loneliness.

Tobelow.help with the rising cost of energy bills, the Council Tax Energy Rebate provides a £150 payment which is not repayable, to households in bands A-D. Payments have already been made to more than 66,000 households in these bands, with arrangements being made for the remaining recipients.
The discretionary element of the Council Tax Energy Rebate is open to people in different council tax bands who may be paying rent and energy bills but are not liable for council tax such as those in a house of multiple occupation (HMO), those in receipt of Universal Credit or Housing Benefit, those in receipt of Council Tax Reduction, or other exceptions.
Residents can apply to pay less council tax through the Council Tax Reduction housing benefit. Using the councils’ online calculator, they can find out whether they would be entitled to a 95% reduction in their council tax bill. There is also the Household Support Fund (HSF), a £170,000 pot split between both councils, which is available to help meet the cost of many household expenses. Those in financial hardship can get help paying for food and essential household goods, including school uniforms, equipment, and household energy bills.
Many schemes and rebates have been announced in 2022 to ease the financial burden on people across the UK as well as in our districts.
• A £650 cost of living payment. Paid directly into claimant bank accounts by DWP, it is split into two payments (paid in July and October) for households in receipt of universal credit, income-based jobseekers’ allowance, income-related employment and support allowance, income support, working tax credits, child tax credit or pension credit
Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are urging residents to check they are receiving the support they are entitled to, including the funds
• A £150 disability cost of living payment. This is a direct payment in September for those receiving disability living allowance, person independence payment, constant attendance allowance or war pension mobility supplement.
A £300 pensioner cost of living payment. All pensioner households will receive this as a top-up to their annual winter fuel payment in November/December 2022, and in addition to the payment above
Cllr John Ward, leader of Babergh District Council, said: “We know how tight things are for people right now – and household budgets are set to be squeezed further over coming months. We are here to help our residents and communities and want to ensure people understand the range of support available and how to access it. Combating the cost of living is one of our top priorities, so I urge anyone who thinks they may be entitled to this help to check our website for more information.”
These steps are in addition to the national schemes already introduced and coming into effect this winter. The widest reaching of these is the £400 energy bills support payment; this replaced the previous £200 payment announced and will not have to be repaid. The payment will be split over six months and paid to all households with a domestic electricity meter, starting from October 2022. Those with pre-payment meters will have the money applied to their meter or paid via a voucher. Additionally, there is:

Do you know that Freemasonry has been thriving in Sudbury for over 250 years. Currently there are 8 Lodges within Sudbury and the surrounding areas. What is it all about? Our key values are Integrity, Friendship, Respect & Charity. With so much uncertainty in our world today these guiding principles ring as true now as they have at any point in the organisation’s history. It is one of the oldest social and charitable organisations in the world. With 69 Lodges and well over 2500 members in Suffolk there is the opportunity to meet many like-minded individuals. Suffolk and our local area in particular has a close-knit community of Freemasons who are very enthusiastic about what we do. However, it has never been exclusive to any rank or race. Those that have embraced the Craft from Lords, farmers, innkeepers, clergy, councillors, solicitors, and indeed all trades and professions have practised their Freemasonry here in Sudbury and other local masonic centres in nearby Clare and Boxford and throughout our rural community. Nationally there are 8,000 Lodges with over 170,000 freemasons. Above all Freemasonry is to be enjoyed, whilst supporting Charity but also making good men even better. Freemasonry itself fulfils many purposes, for example we are, after the National Lottery, by far the biggest charity organisation in Britain, supporting (with little publicity) virtually every worthwhile campaign in our society and as a body donating annually £millions to worthwhile causes. Local charities also benefit with £thousands also quietly donated. Many embrace our ritual, fulfilling their theatrical ambitions. Some love, embrace and study our immense history and the difference masons have made to our society. But above all, the one common thread is the desire of the company and comradeship of those of a like mind. Interested to find out more? Sudbury & District Freemasons are holding an open evening on Friday October 7th at 6pm where there will be the opportunity to discover more about the history of our organisation, our Historic Masonic Hall and observe our beautiful old temple, built in 1886 and virtually unchanged since. And of course, the people that have been involved over the years, listen to an account of our pastime and most importantly to just dine and socialise with us.
If you would like to join us on the evening and discover more about freemasonry please contact Andy via grp5rep@suffolkfreemason.org.ukemail:

How to keep your money safe
Case Study The scammers are professional confidence tricksters, and this story comes from a real life experience from one of our customers this week who lost in excess of £40,000, and its my passion that I want to raise awareness of this scam because its not new, its been doing the rounds for at least 8 years.
Consider removing your landline telephone. Scammers will tend to target the vulnerable, retired and ill informed. They call hundreds of people a day until they get that hook in. If you are too difficult they will not waste their time on you and move on. If the person is genuine and you tell them you don’t believe them, they will understand. Take their number, verify who they are from another phone by calling the head office or visit your local Police station or bank, if they get pushy, then this is your warning, hang up. If you need to verify someone’s identity, use your mobile to make a call to a verified number you have gathered from an independent source, such as online or legitimate paperwork. Call the number from this phone, do not use the same phone you were called on. You would then get through to a real 999 call handler and your actual bank. And if all else fails, visit your bank. If money gets taken from your account without your intervention, then it will be returned to you. If you transfer money after being tricked then you will have to fight to get it back. Long Melford
The caller hangs up, calls 999 and sure enough the “switchboard” put you through.. This is not possible and in actual fact an abuse of the 999 call system, but it isn’t on this occasion, its fake, its not a control room and DC Andrews does not exist.. You haven’t called 999. How is this possible? Remember when someone calls you landline to landline? And the caller does not hangup the phone? IT KEEPS THE LINE OPEN!!
•
They play a fake dial tone down the line, get someone else to impersonate a 999 call operator and hey presto your confidence in this officer is falsely Thenincreased.from this point on, it’s a game, it’s a game of removing any doubt in your mind. The next step is the “officer” will ask you to call your bank to cancel your cards, they are expecting your call, you now trust him and he says he will call you back. You hang up the phone line, call the number on the back of your card and speak to lovely person from your bank who has been expecting your call and advises you what to do to freeze your accounts. They will also know how much you have in your accounts, they have access to your credit reports, they know you how much you have and how to little by little tease your hard earned money from your hands. On this occasion after numerous phone calls and increasing confidence over a period of weeks, they manage to get you to transfer money into a “safe” account. Once the transaction has been done, in the banks eyes, you have willingly given your money to a third party, and the litigation then starts of you trying to retrieve it. The aftermath Can you imagine how distressing this must be, for you, your family and your self confidence. Now how is all this possible? What can you do to stop it happening to you? The single point of failure and the start of the confidence trick is the landline telephone. Why does it keep the line open when the receiver of the call hangs up? What reason could there possibly be to still have a system like Ifthis?someone knows the answer to this I would be love to be informed. Does it happen with your mobile? No when using a mobile, if anyone ends the call it’s ended. Simple. If this happened in the first place, then none of the fake calls to 999 or the bank would have been possible. How do I keep safe? The answer. Be aware! Trust no one! Remember this article!
Backstory Hacking computers has become increasingly difficult for the average scammer, security is very good these days and devices are harder to hack and gain access to, but the scammers still need to get their fix. So they resort to other methods.. They target the person on the end of the phone, get them to give them access to their computer or just get them to transfer money into their accounts.

A customer came in today, and I started to say the same thing, your landline is dangerous, he was taken aback, he said “I just hang up on them”. I know it’s a scam. But I regaled the story of what happened earlier in the week. “Ok” I said.. Phone rings.. you answer.. “Hello this is Detective Constable Andrews from the Metropolitan Police, we have just arrested a suspect in possession of your credit card”. They ask you to check to ensure you have your card in your possession. Then they ask you because of what’s happened, you should be alert. And they say don’t believe any call you receive, and ask you to hang up, call 999 and ask to be put through to DC Andrews.

On Saturday 13th August Linda Betteridge, formerly Dowdall, lost her fight with breast cancer. In the mid-2000s she had her first brush, it returned in 2019 and ultimately claimed her life. To say that she fought this nasty disease would be an understatement. She refused to give in to it, and was even overseeing poster production for our next show the day before being admitted into hospital for the last time. Whatever you have read in the past many years concerning SDS, in this and other publications, was there because of Linda. She made it her mission to ensure news of our productions reached the widest possible Howaudience.tosummarise the impact of one person on the Quay and SDS, and express the gaping hole left in the fabric of the society? Various committee members are trying to shore up the publicity machine that she ran with devastating efficiency for so many years. Meanwhile messages are pouring in, reflecting the breadth of her contribution to this group and local arts. Linda was employed at the Quay in the 1980s, helping with their publicity alongside Steve Betteridge, who was at that time the technician at the Quay. They became a devoted couple, living together for many years and marrying in 2019. Our hearts go out to Steve, to Linda’s three children, her grandchildren and to the rest of her close-knit family. Her first appearance for SDS was in 1989, appropriately in the pantomime. Linda loved pantos, appearing in four of them. She brought her family to see and later perform in them, too. Linda appeared in 22 productions, lastly in 2021 as Phyllis in ‘The Last Bread Pudding’ and as a Fury in ‘Maryland’ the same year. Her directorial debut was ‘Abigail’s Party’ in 2004. She directed seven plays, the last being ‘Bell, Book and Candle’ in 2018. Backstage, she was a long standing member of our committee, kept the props store in some semblance of order, updated the archive after every production, and oiled the publicity wheels. She was also a member of the ‘Quaystone Cops’, who raised funds for the Quay Theatre from 1989 to 1995. Our production of “Anne Boleyn” in early September will be dedicated to Linda’s memory. Our deepest condolences and warmest wishes go to Steve, Kerys, Liam, Matthew and all their family.

2021 has certainly been another challenging year for all of us at Hadleigh Boxford Group Practice The whole team have pulled together in these difficult times, and we have been so well supported by the community and our PPG You will all be aware of the Covid clinics that have been the stand out achievement and a massive 24,000 Covid vaccines have been delivered in the surgery, and more recently St Mary’s Church In addition to this are the hundreds of vaccines delivered by our team of mobile jabbers to the residence and staff at the four care homes we look after and the numerous house bound patients too Many of those delivering the vaccines are our retired nurses and doctors, and we are indebted to them for their incredible support None of the vaccination clinics would have been the huge success they were without the army of PPG volunteers that have been out in force come rain, gales and even snow! They have worked so hard to support us and the community and we are extremely grateful to every single volunteer It has been a herculean effort from everyone at the surgery that, despite all the Covid disruption, the Covid vaccinations, the isolations, and lockdowns we have also delivered nearly 5,000 flu vaccines and remained open seeing patients throughout the pandemic We are all aware that the demand on GP surgeries in England has steadily climbed over these last 12 months and we have felt it here too We have worked tirelessly to do our best to meet this demand including adapting our working pattern, incorporating more technology to support us in delivering care and recruited 12 new people to our team Although we have sadly had to say goodbye to some staff that have left, we have grown in numbers at the surgery We are proud to have 3 more receptionists, extra secretarial and data team personnel, as well as an additional doctor and nurse Our hope for 2022 is to continue to provide high quality care, while being responsive to the shifting landscape of the NHS We will remain approachable and accessible to all our patients, and above all, our hope is to have Covid gone! We wish you all a very happy and healthy 2022

Coming next from Sudbury Dramatic Society at The Quay Theatre is the September production of Anne Boleyn by Howard Benton. Howard Brenton’s play was first performed at Shakespeare’s Globe, London, in July 2010, and was named Best New Play at the whatsonstage.com Awards in 2011. A celebration of a great English heroine, Anne Boleyn dramatises the life and legacy of Henry VIII’s notorious second wife, who helped change the course of the nation’s history. Traditionally seen as either the pawn of an ambitious family manoeuvred into the King’s bed or as a predator manipulating her way to power, Anne – and her ghost – are seen in a very different light in this award-winning play.

Well, here we are again, how time flies!! This is going to be easier than last month, as I have had a bit of work done on my cataracts, which had got covered over, now been cleared, so I can SEE clearly again!!!, making life much easier. Hope you are enjoying all these sunny days, and have you had your holidays? We have our next holiday this month, a change Friday to Monday instead of Monday to Friday, when we go to see a fantastic show, starting in daylight and ending in the day, with a fantastic firework display., as well as visiting Durham and Beamish. I was so sad we had to cancel the trip to Stratford on Avon. as hardly anyone booked, - the first time I have EVER had to cancel because of the reason, (not counting during the virus)
When considering the difference between European languages and these remote tribes; it all makes sense as these people remained isolated for thousands of years until they were invaded by explorers from Europe. When you look at the origins of the English Language there are so many influences from Latin, Greek, Old French, Germanic plus all the addition of 1,700 words created by William Shakespeare that are still used today. Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s popular Tree for Life scheme, which offers a free tree for new parents, is open once again for 2022 applications. The scheme is open to all families in the districts who have or are welcoming a new born, or newly adopted child, between 1 January and 31 December 2022. Parents who may have lost a child during the same period are also able to apply for a remembrance tree. The initiative offers parents the chance to mark their arrival by planting a tree. It also aims to benefit families, communities and the environment by boosting tree coverage across the district. So far, the councils have given out well over a thousand trees through Tree for Life, with 450 families applying in 2021. Applicants from 2021 collected their trees during this year’s tree planting season in March, with expert help on hand to advise families on their tree choice and aftercare at home. Also open to those without a garden, a selection of the trees continue to be planted at key locations in the districts including Needham Lake, Shotley Golden Wood, Broom Hill in Hadleigh, Gallowsfield Wood in Haughley and Sproughton Millennium Green.
Sam Evans, who previously applied for a tree for her son Harrison, said: “It’s a really special scheme, even if you don’t have space in your garden, you can plant it locally and visit your tree.

Facts and Figures from the Past Language Oddities
The actual word count in Chichewa Dictionary was only 5,000. In Hopi where the Amerindian language is used there is only one word for everything except birds who fly. Therefore, the word masa ‘taka is used for aeroplanes, pilots’ flies, butterflies. The Eskimo people have a variety of words to describe snow and how it falls, soft snow, hard snow, slushy snow, snow that is packed hard. The Australian Aboriginal language Pintupi was restricted with a few general words for number, however they still had a good knowledge of calculating numbers. Interestingly they had all these words to describe different holes; yarla a hole in an object, pirti a hole in the ground, pirnki a hole formed by a rock shelf, kartalpa a small hole in the ground, yulipilpa, a shallow hole in the ground where ants live, mutara a special hole in a spear. A burrow for small animals was called a nyarrkalpa.
“As parents, we’re aware of the benefits trees bring, but being able to teach that to little ones with this hands-on experience, brings it all together.” 40 families have already applied to the 2022 scheme, but the councils are encouraging even more people to apply for their tree on the councils’ website before the 10 January 2023 deadline. The trees must be planted within the two districts. Applications will be processed following the closing date, with eligible applicants invited to choose and collect their tree in 2023. The Tree for Life scheme is just one of many steps already being taken by the councils to support biodiversity in their patch, including:
• introducing wildflower verges
During the reign of Charles II began to consult with a group of ministers instead of just one. Most probably due to the fact that his father Charles I lost his head through not listening to the advice from members of his court. The group of men who were selected were known as his ‘CABAL’ because of their initials, Clifford, Ashley, Buckingham, Arlington and Lauderdale.
The word CABAL is still used to describe a small powerful group of people. When I lived and worked in Malawi, I tried to learn the local language Chichewa, where we use many words for one subject theirs were quite limited; for example, there was only one word for animals Chunga lulu, and the animal was then described with hand actions and facial expressions. So, a poisonous snake would be identified by hissing, pulling a scared face combined with hand and arm movements to indicate how it moved.

If you ever wonder about the origins of words, I recently discovered the origin of the word Cabinet, as our present Cabinet has been under scrutiny and will most probably change once the new leader of the Conservative Party has been elected. I discovered the following information.
• successfully securing a share of £150k with other Suffolk councils to plant around 3,000 trees in the county. 200 of these are located across Broom Hill in Hadleigh, Needham Lake in Needham Market, and Greens Meadow in Stowmarket and were dedicated to the Queen’s Green Canopy in Suffolk finalising mapping of existing and potential wildlife corridors, as well as a survey of the districts’ current tree canopy
“Harrison is such an outdoorsy boy; he loves being outside. He’s always shown a real interest in the garden, in the plants and the trees. It’s lovely to have the tree in our garden as something sentimental for the family.
