{Project Overview}

Hacking the home to make play part of everyday. Play is an essential part of all our lives, whether child or adult. Be it playing sports, a board game or simply sharing jokes with friends, play is just as important to adults as building a den or playing dress-up is to a child. The Coronavirus outbreak has left many of us having to spend extended periods of time at home in lockdown, restricting the opportunity to socialise and play in ways that we are used to. How can we use creativity to encourage! play in these unique times?

{The Brief} To design something that will enable people to play at home during lockdown.  Your design could make an existing everyday activity playful, provide a break from work, or make work more fun. It could recreate some form of existing outdoor play inside the house, create a whole new type of game, or do something entirely different to create play! It could be for adults or children, and enable a person to play alone, with their family or housemates, or even with their neighbors or friend far away. Your design should only use objects commonly found in the house, garden or shed in its construction or as props. It could make play inside or outside the house (in the garden) or even on the house itself! Prepared by: HaďŹ zuddin Haron I June 2020 5

Inspiration sources and examples For inspiration, you might consider the different types of play that exist. (Listed in the next slide) You might also find inspiration in the work of: Heath Robinson, Rube Goldberg or Japanese Chindogu. Some examples of design created around the house might be: House maze By using the furniture available in each room, siblings could create a maze that runs the length and height of the house for each other; changing the winning route each hour. Washing line stories By making a makeshift pulley system from washing lines, bike wheels and clothes pegs, stories could be written on paper and pulled back and forth to be shared between neighbours. Knights of the kitchen table Using implements only found in the kitchen cupboards; bored homework's could have a contest for the best knight costume. Prepared by: HaďŹ zuddin Haron I June 2020

Heath Robinson: the unsung hero of British eccentricity and innovation Heath Robinson's name has been used to describe absurdly complex, makeshift contraptions since the early 20th century. Despite this, the man behind the name is largely unknown. {Types of play to consider} Intellectual play: Solving mental mind games for pleasure. E.g. doing a board game. Social play: Interacting with others through playful scenarios. E.g going to the pub or play fighting. Active play: Moving all or part of the body, to actively induce a playful state of mind. e.g going rock climbing etc. Extreme play: Using extreme scenarios or conditions to induce a range of emotions resulting in pleasure. e.g skateboarding. Exploratory play: Using your senses to experience the world around you. e.g. Exploring the woods. Imaginative play: Inventing scenarios in your imagination, and sometimes acting them out. e.g. playing shop. Creative play: Creating something new, for pleasure, e.g painting a picture Frivolous play: Undertaking small and simple acts that induce a playful sensibility, e.g painting a prank. STAGE 1

STAGE 3

Research and Analysis (20%) Students are required to research and gather the documentation of the choosen site (your own house that you currently living) in form of sketches, diagrams, photograph and written information (info-graphic). All pertinent information of the site must be clearly presented, including the advantages and disadvantages of the site. You will be given a lecture on conducting site analysis for this exercise purposes. You will work in indiviidual and produce a set of site analysis together with a brown color model board (Scale 1:50) of the existing building. After the site analysis, you are then required to choose the “PLAY” theme that you are interested in (this to refer to the list of potiential given earlier).

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENT: By the end of this stage , your findings are to be presented on and A3 size presentation info-graphic board. Start date : Week 2 Submission Date : Week 3

STAGE 2

Concept Development (35%) With Stage One’s research on Heath Robinson, Rube Goldberg or Japanese Chindogu, you are required to develop design proposals for your chosen “Play Methods”. Throughout the progression, you are required to come out with at least 2 concept proposals to demonstrate your understanding of form from the “PLAY” techniques / objects etc. Your exploration and experimentation of form should include a diverse range of materials and color. *All this is to get prior approval from you tutor before final submission.

Configuration of space (20%) With your concept developed from the previous stage, you are to input the concept into the proposals for the of the selected AREA of your house (such living area, kitchen, store room, bedrooms etc.) this also related to your chosen “PLAY” method. You should consider looking into the needs of your behavior while you are conducting the “PLAY” in a space and in a much more detail progression (i.e. types of activity & function, develop proposals to respond onto the human involved needs). This will encompass the choice of furnishing and finishing (material). Your spatial planning must justify the size of an area with the appropriate function/activity. And you must present the research of the types of function you are proposing; followed by diagrammatic drawings of your spatial planning. These will proceed your orthographic drawings and furniture layout plan. Prior to the 1:20 sectional model, you must demonstrate your progress through at least 2 brown model card development models in 1:50. These development models should show the overall layout and the evolution of the form. *Drawings should be at an appropriate scale in A2 size sheets and models should be at 1:50 and1:20 scale.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENT: You should present this approved proposals via online “Team office” in the form of 1:50 scale concept together this could be an illustration, a 2D/3D technical drawing, a photo of a model, an animation, a mix of these, or anything in between!. You may want to add annotations, construction information, or zoom in on parts of your idea to help the tutors to understand how it might work. The more detail, the better.

Start date : Week 4 Submission Date : Week 6

Two A3 sheets (landscape or portrait) explaining your design. Your files should be saved as a high resolution (300dpi) PDF (Max 20MB) and should show an image or set of images of your design in use. In addition to your sheets please include with your submission: •  The name of your design. Make it SNAPPY! •  300 words explaining your design. •  A kit list of objects/materials needed to create your design.

You are required to present your design conceptual ideas on a maximum two A2 sheets. The presentation drawings must use color and show figures handling the activities. Your final model must have an acceptable level of standard of finish (this to be photograph and include in your final presentation board).

{The Problem Statement} The world as we knew it will never be the same again, not our behavior, economies, transport systems and the list goes on… The built environment should also be re-looked at. It is suggested that the spread of pandemics could be enhanced by our built environments. Architectural and Interior design is mostly human centered and draw people together as social beings. The spread of pandemics flourish in these spaces. AS INTERIOR DESIGNER, WHAT SHOULD INTERIOR SPACE BE BEYOND COVID-19?

{Project Overview}

What should interior space be beyond COVID- 19. Housing: All the sudden many homes across the world have become selfisolation facilities. Are our homes equipped to quarantine people? Only the fortunate are lucky enough to contain themselves within a spacious and safe home. There are billions of people who will have to self-isolate themselves in slums. What are the possible answers to this design challenge? Workplace: Many homes have become isolated offices during numerous lock down across the world. Is this the future of the workplace? How does this effect our homes and daily lives? Can homes be better equipped as multi-functional spaces?
