In a 15-minute walk from Malaysia’s iconic Twin Towers, sits an undignified Chow Kit Road, known as the red-light district in Kuala Lumpur labeled with prostitution, transvestites, drug addicts and homelessness. Through the perspective of an outsider, it is impossible to diminish the negative perception that mumbles in one’s heart while walking down the streets of Chow Kit. Beneath the negative perceptions portrayed against Chow Kit, there lies a place of what the people call, Home. It was an eye-opening experience as a middle person to walk around Chow Kit, capturing moments throughout the day. From the children’s laughter playing together in their sekampung, to the trust that the blind man has for the passerby’s creating a sense of authentic human attachment to the place. Despite the cheerful scenes, flocking prostitutes and sex-workers hide away behind walls as if they are rejected from the society and treated as an outcast. What-if they do not need to hide anymore? We all know that it is not easy to make ends meet. Have we forgotten that they too, are human? What-if they do not intend to walk their current path if they have had a second chance? The future that we envision is a city of salvation, where all the inhabitants of Chow Kit bond together within the four walls, breaking the orthodox. The space embraces all differences thus bringing people together despite different backgrounds, ethnicity and their past. Job opportunities are offered to all without considering their past behaviour, compromising each individual’s moral obligations. Upon building a better future, outsiders do not have to feel petrified of the community, as the once cold and quiet alley has transformed into a colourful path full of happy children and potential individuals who have trust and empathy to each other. The old and dilapidated houses are not only painted with new pastel colours, but also planted with greeneries bringing the walls to life. People could be seen expressing themselves freely through new windows and verandas. The creation of this new space could be an astonishing achievement in hopes to create unity among own people, peace & joy, and last but not least, a better place to call home.

This project helps to address a number of key issues that Chow Kit are facing such as lack of education, poor water system, isolation and loneliness, lack of entertainment, high pollution. Through anti perspectival sectional model, the insight future of Chow Kit is portrayed. The parabolic frame with flying arts represents the time that has turned to the future world. Inside the frame, lies the flying droplets housing different kind of activities. From education to business, the modern technology is permeating every aspect of lives.

project 02A The craft based technique is applied to present the whole ideas. Yellow droplets at the focal point represent the idea of the bright hope with the never ending colours. The highly crafted engine sound can be perceived through the silvering metal robotic machine and holograms. In the future world, the new food and water system are designed with an environmental sustainability approach. The water bubble made from biodegradable seaweed has replaced the single-use plastic bottles. Furthermore, the food is harvested in smart flying algae that will deliver food to every door.

Education is now available in every lamp post, provide the communities with unlimited sources of information. Whereas for the living aspect, changing daily outfits is now as easy as spraying clothes. Pollution in overgrown construction is solved by levitate plants that absorb noise and purify airs from the site. Robots transform low maintenance old house to the futuristic one, giving the brand new look to the whole space. There is no need to worry about security, as the sensor tech is monitoring in every corner to ensure the safety. In a nutshell, technology will take over almost every aspect of human lives. The creation of this new space could be an astonishing achievement in hopes to create the better future for Chow Kit.

The poor infrastructure, lack of security and low level of education are a few of major issues that have been taking place in Chow Kit for years. A better future is highly needed for the welfare of the communities especially the future generation. The city of salvation is a visionary city that not only address the problems in Chow Kit but also providing a solution in a creative and innovative way. There is no doubt that education is the core foundation to instill knowledge as the main mind changing power of the future. Therefore, the main program in the city of salvation takes its focus on education. Through a three dimensional artifact, the new city is portrayed. Various method and materials are used to visualize the ideas. The winding steel at the bottom part symbolizes the chaotic condition of current Chow Kit. With the powered gear, the future world is generated and motorized to adapt another way of living. It is supported with connected hinges that acts as a pillar. As security is one of main issue at Chow Kit, security fencing is installed surrounding the gear to provide security enhancement, simultaneously making people to feel more secure. To motorize the whole mechanism, different pipes are circulated from one point to another. These pipe systems consists of three groups which are the industrial system, waste management and treatment, and electricity generators. Right in the middle of the gear, stands the fiber transmitter that transmits electromagnetic waves carrying data and signals from satalites in outer space. The data and signals are transmitted to various different platforms to carry out diverse activities. The first platform is the anti gravity plantation that acts as an air purifier to improve the air quality. There is also the ‘museum hub’ - symbolize the remembrance of the past of Chow Kit. Furthermore, flying car is introduced as a new mode of transport to enhance the way of travelling. Lastly, the infinite centrium – the node of the city of salvation. The infinite centrium is the center of education where people could gather and find endless learning programmes through the holographic projection. All in all, the ultimate goal for the new visionary city is to educate people of Chow Kit in an innovative way so that they can improve their way of living.

JOURNEY OF SALVATION

project 03 The medium scale of art installation with mixed – media constructions were designed to give user the full experience of future imagination of Chow Kit – the red-light district in Kuala Lumpur with various issues. The materials used were varied: coloured cloth, coloured plastic sheet, model board, steel and fish string. The art installation comprises three circular layers. To engage fully with the artworks, the spectator needs to walk through the layer. The focus is on how the viewer experience while walking through layer after layer. When the viewer stands outside the artworks, the circular translucent brown fabric will be seen. The translucency emphasizes that the story does not stop there. So, what is next? The light radiates through the translucent white fabric inside. The two extreme colours emphasize the change of existing Chow Kit and the future imagination of the place by the artist. Although dark and bright often interpret as oppositional, here the artists view them as complementary. These colours define stages of constructive changes to a better future of Chow Kit. As the spectator goes deeper and deeper, they will find themselves in the midst of colours. An array of colour contemplates the education and knowledge which are the two fundamental elements on how the artists inject a positive shift to the current unfavourable situation of Chow Kit. As altogether, the artists intention is to give unified experience of harmonious journey of salvation.
