Lei Lei, Thomas Sauvin HAND COLORED NO.1 Thomas Sauvin is een fotograaf en fotoverzamelaar met een enorme collectie oude Chinese handgekleurde foto’s. Lei Lei was geraakt door de mysterieuze schoonheid van deze foto’s en samen besloten ze op zoek te gaan naar een heel eigen procédé om foto’s in te kleuren. Eerder hadden ze al samen de monumentale installatie en film Recycled (2013) gemaakt, waarin zo’n drieduizend kleurennegatieven gevonden op vuilnisbelten in Beijing samen de stad, de bewoners en de vergankelijkheid tonen (winnaar Grand Prix niet-verhalende short HAFF 2013).
Thomas Sauvin is a photographer and photography collector with a massive collection of vintage Chinese hand-coloured photographs. Lei Lei was captivated by the mysterious beauty that these pictures posess and together they set out to find their own unique photo colouring technique. Previously, they worked together on the monumental installation and film Recycled (2013), in which some three thousand colour negatives found at Beijing refuge dumps jointly portray the city, its inhabitants and decay (winner Grand Prix non-narrative short at HAFF 2013).
Voor dit nieuwe project verzamelden de kunstenaars in 2013 zwart-witfoto’s op vlooienmarkten. Ze stelden zich voor dat alle foto’s van dezelfde (Chinese) persoon waren en legden verbanden tussen de foto’s door ze in twee jaar tijd diverse malen te scannen en opnieuw af te drukken, collages te vormen en in al die verschillende ronden met de hand in te kleuren. De 1.168 foto’s tonen samen het verstrijken van tijd en bieden een leven aan de imaginaire hoofdrolspeler. Lei Lei heeft ook de leader voor HAFF 2016 gemaakt en in de internationale competitie voor shorts is zijn nieuwste film Books on Books opgenomen (eveneens een wereldpremière). Beide collagefilms zijn geënt op boeken uit de late jaren 1980, een periode van economische hervormingen in China.
For this new project the artists in 2013 garnered black-andwhite photographs from flee markets. They imagined all pictures were made by one and the same person and forged connections between the pictures by scanning and reprinting them several times over two years, forming collages and colouring them by hand in all these different rounds. The 1,168 pictures together show the lapse of time and lend the imaginary protagonist a life. Lei Lei also created the leader for HAFF 2016, and the international shorts competition includes his latest film Books on Books (world première). Both collage films were grafted onto books from the late 1980s, a period of economic reforms in China.

Shiwei Ding METEOR SONATA Een dode, zeventienjarige boom uit de woonplaats van de kunstenaar vond een nieuwe bestemming in deze installatie voor zes schermen. Hij zaagde de hele boom in stukken, de stam en takken in dunne plakken van anderhalve centimeter en maakte daar zo’n duizend foto’s van die samen de tien duizend geanimeerde beelden vormen. De jaarringen en knoesten tonen een levensverhaal, van de geboorte, groei en ontwikkeling tot de veroudering en de dood. Elke vertakking is slechts één van de oneindig veel keuzemomenten die een leven kent. Elk stukje boom is uniek. De liefdevolle analyse van de boom vormt een treffende, poëtische installatie over vergankelijkheid, een gedicht over tijd, een ballet van zwevende hemellichamen in een eigen universum. Shiwei Ding maakt veelal experimentele animatiefilms en installaties. In 2015 vertoonde HAFF de filmversie in split screen van zijn installatie voor negen schermen Goodbye Utopia, met verstilde situaties rond krachtige iconische beelden in bewolkte luchten.
A dead, seventeen-year-old tree from the artist’s hometown found a new purpose in this installation for six screens. He sawed the whole tree into pieces, its stem and branches into half-inch slices, and made some thousand photos of them that jointly form the basis of ten thousand animated images. The growth rings and gnarls tell a life story, from the birth, growth and development to ageing and death. Each branching off is only one of the infinite options a life offers. Each piece of tree is unique. This affectionate analysis of the tree results in a poetic installation on evanescence, a time poem, a ballet of floating celestial bodies in their own universe. Shiwei Ding mostly makes experimental animation films and installations. In 2015, HAFF screened Goodbye Utopia, originally an installation for nine screens. The film version in split screen alternately zooms in on each screen, with densely clouded skies and various hushed situations with strong iconic images that are quite unsettling.

Op het HAFF 2015 vond de wereldpremière plaats van de spraakmakende korte animatiefilm Mr. Sea, de afstudeerfilm van de filmmaakster naar een klassiek, wonderlijk verhaal van Pu Song-Ling (1640-1715) uit de Qingdynastie met een bijzonder originele toepas sing van traditioneel porselein waar de Qing-dynastie beroemd om is. Een nieuwsgierige wetenschapper gaat op onderzoek naar een mysterieus onbewoond eiland in de Zuid-Chinese zee. Daar treft hij een prostituee en een slang. Ze raken verstrikt in een repeterend patroon. De perfectie van glanzend, breekbaar porselein in koele tinten staat in sterk contrast tot het bloederige verhaal. Xue Geng: ‘Mijn voorliefde voor porselein komt voort uit m’n liefde voor klassieke Chinese kunst. Porselein draagt een eeuwenoude historische en culturele betekenis met zich mee en het karakteristieke van porselein is heel geschikt om de heel eigen esthetiek van oude Chinese mysterieuze verhalen te verbeelden.’ Na HAFF 2015 is de film samen met porseleinen artwork als installatie gepresenteerd in Düsseldorf in de omvangrijke tentoonstelling China 8, een ambitieuze presentatie van hedendaagse Chinese beeldende kunst in acht Duitse steden. En nu ook in Utrecht, aangevuld met unieke ontwerptekeningen.
HAFF 2015 hosted the world première of the much-discussed short animation film Mr. Sea, the filmmaker’s graduation project adapted from a classical mysterious story by Pu SongLing (1640-1715) from the Qing dynasty, with a particularly inventive application of traditional porcelain that the Qing dynasty is famous for. A curious scientist sets out to investigate a mysterious desert island in the South Chinese Sea. There, he comes across a prostitute and a snake. They get caught up in a repetitive pattern. The perfection of the glistening fragile porcelain in cool hues contrasts starkly with the bloody story. Xue Geng: ‘My preference to porcelain originates from my passion for China’s traditional art. Porcelain carries long-standing historical and cultural accumulations and the characteristics of porcelain effectively deliver the specific aesthetics of the ancient Chinese mysterious novels.’ After HAFF 2015, the film was presented together with the china artwork as an installation in Düsseldorf, as part of the extensive exhibition China 8, an ambitious presentation of contemporary Chinese fine art in eight German cities. And now also in Utrecht, complemented with unique drafts.

Erdal Inci PATTERNS OF MOTION II
De jonge Turkse beeldend kunstenaar/nieuwemediakunstenaar Erdal Inci maakt hypnotiserende digitale loops, waarin hij beelden eindeloos herhaalt. Vaak zijn meerdere fases van een beweging of alledaagse handeling tegelijkertijd te zien; de patronen van traditionele ambachten en dans inspireren hem in zijn streven beelden te maken die net zo effectief zijn als muziek. De bewegingen spelen uitgekiend in op de vaak stedelijke of historische omgeving, zoals bijvoor足beeld het bekende Taksimplein, de Galatabrug en de Kamon足 dotrappen in Istanboel. In vervolg op de installatie Patterns of Motion in 2014 vertoont HAFF zijn installatie Patterns of Motion II onder andere in het Stadskantoor, op twee grote schermen naast de lift waar dagelijks naar schatting 10.000 mensen langskomen. Die voortdurende stroom mensen vindt een spiegel in zijn werk en zijn werk vormt een aanleiding om daar even bij stil te staan. Zijn werk nodigt uit om uit te puzzelen hoe het is gemaakt en stemt vrolijk, maar ook tot nadenken.
The young Turkish visual/new media artist Erdal Inci makes hypnotising digital loops, endlessly repeating images. Often, several phases of a movement or routine action are shown simultaneously; the patterns of traditional crafts and dance inspire Inci in his pursuit to make images that are just as effective as music. The movements cleverly play along with often urban or historical settings, like the well-known Taksim Square, PATTERNS OF MOTION II Galata Bridge or Kamondo Erdal Inci, Erdal Inci Stairs in Istanbul. De Engelse filmmaker en beeldend kunstenaar Stuart Pound heeft een indrukwekkend oeuvre opgebouwd met korte experimentele films en installaties waarmee hij onvermoeibaar de filmkunst onderzoekt en voedt. Ironisch en speels, geeft hij bijvoorbeeld scènes uit bekende live-actionfilms en found footage een nieuwe lading. Door scènes uit een sciencefictionfilm of actiefilm te kantelen en te herhalen met minieme verschuivingen wordt de ervaring semi-abstract en de beleving voor de kijker enigszins vervreemdend. Dat geldt ook voor ogenschijnlijk toevallige opnamen bij Trafalgar Square in Londen: uit- en inademen, voorwaarts en dan achterwaarts lopen doet denken aan een dans in een tijdelijk doolhof. Muziek en poëzie vormen een rode draad in zijn werk. De films op vier schermen in het Universiteitsmuseum bieden een overtuigende kijk op zijn wereld met intrigerende titels als Grandmother Is a Crab, ORWO, Sticky Pixels, The Lost & Crumpled

The English filmmaker and visual artist Stuart Pound has built an impressive body of works with short experimental films and installations, tirelessly investigating and nourishing the art of cinema. Ironic and playful, he gives scenes from well-known live-action movies or found footage, for example, new connotations. By tilting scenes from science-fiction or action movies and repeating them with slight shifts, the expe rience becomes semiabstract and the perception turns rather alienating for the spectator. This also applies to
seemingly incidental recordings at Trafalgar Square, London: exhaling and inhaling, walking forward then backward reminds one of a dance in a temporary labyrinth. Music and poetry form a leitmotif in his work. The films on four screens at the Universiteitsmuseum provide a cogent look at his world, with intriguing titles like Grandmother Is a Crab, ORWO, Sticky Pixels, The Lost & Crumpled Will, Time Code (monitor 1), Song Lines, Breath Dance and Dance 0-19 (monitor 2), Chase and Run (monitor 3) and At the Beach with Monica Vitti, 1960, Clocktime Trailer and Retro Disk Chunter (monitor 4). Internationaal heeft de Nederlandse kunstenaar, illustrator en animatiefilmmaker Han Hoogerbrugge groot aanzien verworven als pionier met korte, vaak interactieve animaties op internet, al in de begindagen van het platform, en bijzondere projecten op Facebook. Hij is een ware cross-overkunstenaar, beweegt zich moeiteloos op verschillende online platforms, op het grote doek, in de openbare ruimte en in publicaties, met strips, installaties, games, animaties en illustraties. Hij werkt zowel in opdracht als vrij. Zijn illustraties verschijnen wekelijks in de Volkskrant en regelmatig in diverse tijdschriften. Hoogerbrugge heeft verschillende videoclips gemaakt, onder andere voor Dead Man Ray (band van de Belgische zanger DAAN), The Young Punx en The Pet Shop Boys. Zijn werk kenmerkt zich door een enigszins vervreemdende, vaak ironische kijk op het (moderne) leven, in grafisch krachtige beelden, waarbij hij vrijelijk met iconen speelt en het vertrouwde soms wat ongemakkelijk of melancholisch wordt.
Internationally, the Dutch artist, illustrator and animation filmmaker Han Hoogerbrugge acquired prestige as a pioneer of short, often interactive animations on the internet, in the early days of the platform, and special projects on Facebook. He is a true cross-over artist, effortlessly moving between different online platforms, on the silver screen, in public space and in publications, with cartoons, installations, games, animations and illustrations. Sometimes he is commissioned, sometimes 15

HAFF presents his work: What’s Up Doc, based on online footage of mobile phones of the Libyan ex-dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, who is carried off and killed by rebels. Perhaps Hoogerbrugge’s most uneasy installation ever, featuring Bugs Bunny as Gaddafi.

Utrecht mag zich langzamerhand met recht Animatiehoofdstad noemen. Utrecht biedt kennelijk een vruchtbare bodem voor animatie, gezien de bovengemiddelde hoeveelheid zzp’ers en (kleine én grote) animatiebedrijven en facilitaire bedrijven en de voortreffelijke opleidingen die er gevestigd zijn, helemaal met de komst van HKU Media naar de stad Utrecht. Te zien zijn schetsen, modellen, artwork en films met works in progress van de HKU en makers en studio’s uit Utrecht: Robbie Cornelissen, Frame Order, il Luster Films, Job, Joris & Marieke en Polder Animation. HAFF vertoont van al deze makers en studio’s ook films op het grote doek in de competitie voor Nederlandse animatie en een programma met studentenfilms.
Within the framework of the prestigious, international seminar CARTOON Business, held directly after HAFF in Utrecht, we, in association with the HKU, devote an exhibition entirely to animation from the city of Utrecht. By now, Utrecht can justifiably call itself the Animation Capital. The city apparently provides a fertile soil for animation, considering the above-average number of freelancers and (small and large) animation companies and general and technical support services and the excellent schools established here, especially since the arrival of HKU Media in the city of Utrecht. Exhibits include sketches, models, artwork and films, presenting work in progress from the HKU and makers and studios from Utrecht: Robbie Cornelissen, Frame Order, il Luster Films, Job, Joris & Marieke en Polder Animation. HAFF also presents films from these filmmakers and studios on the silver screen in the competition for Dutch animation and a programme with student films. 18
ROBBIE CORNELISSEN is beeldend kunstenaar die regelmatig animatie toepast in zijn werk. Hij won op HAFF 2015 de vakprijs voor Nederlandse animatie samen met Kees Went voor de installatiefilm de Black Room. The Labyrinth Runner was het eerste filmproject waarin hij een aantal media en technieken heeft gecombineerd. In samenwerking met animator Daniel Dugour werden bestaande tekeningen en schetsideeën in de computer in 3D vertaald.

ROBBIE CORNELISSEN is a visual artist who regularly uses animation. At HAFF 2015 he won the professional award for Dutch Animation together with Kees Went for the installation film The Black Room. The Labyrinth Runner was the first film project in which he combined several media and techniques. In cooperation with animator Daniel Dugour, drawings and sketches were translated into 3D images.

FRAME ORDER is opgericht in 2013, als een collectief van zes gedreven animatiemakers, ieder met hun eigen expertise die samen gestaag een indrukwekkende titellijst opbouwen, met vrij werk en in opdracht. Het specialisme van de studio is het vertellen van beeldende verhalen via originele personages. Inmiddels hebben de zes filmmakers samen al tien korte films in hun portfolio en een elfde is momenteel in de maak. Deze collectie toont artwork en concept art van recente en aanstaande producties.
HKU UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS UTRECHT presenteert twee projecten van Nathalie Josephine/Legrix Animation: Big Fat Balloon Cat (2015) over een jonge man en zijn zwevende ballonkat en Moose Lord (2016), over een zoektocht naar een goddelijke eland. En Het Verdronken Land van Wendy Wever, Rosalia Black, Marv Zwart en Paul de Vrijer (2016), geĂŻnspireerd op een oude Zeeuwse legende over Saefthinghe.
FRAME ORDER was founded in 2013 as a collective of six passionate animation makers, each with their own expertise, jointly and steadily building an impressive list of titles of independent and commissioned work. The studio’s specialty is telling visual stories through original characters. The joint portfolio holds ten shorts and the eleventh is in the making. This collection shows artwork and concept art of recent and coming productions.
HKU UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS UTRECHT presents two projects by Nathalie Josephine/Legrix Animation: Big Fat Balloon Cat (2015) about a young man and his floating fat balloon cat and Moose Lord (2016) about a search for a divine moose. Te zien is een selectie van zeefdrukken en gicléeprints die de studio maakte sinds 2010 en een fragment uit de installatie Freeze! An Adventure in 100 Frames (2015). Voor A Single Life won de studio in 2015 de Publieksprijs HAFF én een Oscarnominatie en nominatie Cartoon d’Or 2015.
POLDER ANIMATION is gespecialiseerd in 3D-animatie voor vrij werk en in opdracht. De karakteranimatiestudio probeert in 3D-animatie een unieke en vooral grafisch krachtige visuele stijl neer te zetten, waarmee het zich kan onderscheiden van andere studio’s, het liefst met werk geheel van eigen hand zoals Blik (2010, tweede prijs Europese studentencompetitie HAFF 2010), Nu Ken Je Het Toch Al (2011) en Scrambled (2016).
