First Aliyah - 14 verses G‑d commands Aaron to light the Menorah every day. Moses is commanded to initiate the Levites into service in the Mishkan. This procedure included shaving their bodies, immersing in a mikvah, and offering certain sacrifices. Second Aliyah - 12 verses The Levites are consecrated to G‑d. Towards the end of this section we learn the Levite service age-requirements and retirement age. Third Aliyah - 14 verses One year after the Exodus, the Jews are instructed to bring the Korban Pesach. Pesach Sheini is given as a solution to those who could not take part at the correct time. G‑d then gives Moses the laws of the Second Passover. Fourth Aliyah - 19 verses After the Tabernacle is erected, it is covered by a cloud during the day, and a fire by night. When the cloud lifted, the Jews would journey onwards, following the cloud until it came to rest in a new location of G‑d’s choosing. This section then discusses Moses’ two silver trumpets. These trumpets were used for several purposes. Fifth Aliyah - 24 verses Nearly one year after the Jews arrived at Mount Sinai, the cloud rises from the Tabernacle, signaling their departure. The Tabernacle is dismantled and they travele in formation. Yitro leaves the Jewish encampment. Sixth Aliyah - 31 verses The Jews start traveling, and almost immediately start complaining. First they complain about the journey. Then they grumble about the manna. G‑d tells Moses to gather seventy elders who will assist him in his leadership duties. He also promises to provide the Jews with an abundance of meat. Seventh Aliyah - 23 verses G‑d supplies quail to the Jews. Miriam is stricken with tzara’at (“leprosy”) for one week.

Delve into the deeper side of Judaism This week we take a look at Pesach Sheni
Second Chances When the month of Nissan arrived for the first time in the wilderness, Moshe repeated to the Jewish People the detailed halachot of Pesach. Among other laws, he mentioned that someone who is spiritually impure cannot bring a Pesach offering. A group of distinguished tzaddikim them came to Moshe and Aharon to voice their complaint. “We are impure, because as agents of the Jewish People, we guard and carry Joseph’s coffin. Should we be deprived of the mitzvah of the Korban Pesach (the Pesach sacrifice) because we are carrying the coffin on behalf of the community?” They did not ask to be permitted to eat from the Korban Pesach. They only wished to know whether a Kohen can bring the sacrifice on their behalf and sprinkle its blood. Moshe was unsure of the answer, and immediately turned to Hashem for a response to the request. Moshe entered the Mishkan to bring the matter before Hashem. He was then in-
structed in the laws of Pesach Sheni (the Second Pesach), also termed Pesach Katan (the Minor Pesach). These laws could not be revealed to Moshe previously so that they could be recorded in the merit of the righteous people who were so eager to perform a mitzvah. Hashem taught Moshe that
Moshe was unsure of the answer, and immediately turned to Hashem for a response to the request. if a Jew has a valid reason why he cannot offer the Pesach sacrifice, he can offer it a month later, on the fourteenth of Iyar. He should observe all the laws of the Pesach sacrifice; he slaughters it in the afternoon of the fourteenth of Iyar and eats it at night, together with matzah and maror. However, on the Minor Pesach he need not remove the chametz from his premises as he must do on the real Pesach, and he also does not need to
abstain from the performance of labour. The laws of Pesach Sheni apply only to individuals who are impure. If a majority of the community was impure on the fourteenth of Nissan, the Torah commands that the Pesach lambs nevertheless be slaughtered as usual in the afternoon of the fourteenth of Nissan. If this story took place in Nissan of the second year in the wilderness, why did the Torah not insert this episode at the beginning of Bamidbar, where it would have been accurate chronologically? One reason is that Hashem did not wish to start the book on a negative theme, since the Jews only offered the Pesach sacrifice in the first year. Since they were constantly moving around, they could not perform circumcisions. Since a person may not eat from the Korban Pesach if he is not circumcised, they could not offer any Pesach sacrifices after the first year. Based on ‘The Midrash Says’ by Rabbi M. Weiss

Did You Know Five mitzvot are mentioned in this week’s parsha: 3 positive commandments, and 2 prohibitions. Even though there are only five mitzvot mentioned, it is still in the top half of the parshiyot with the most mitzvot! Some people count the verses of ‘Vayehi bin’soa ha’Aron’ as a book in its own right. By that calculation, there are actually 7 books in the Torah!
QA &
Read through the Parsha in English and find answers to the questions. LOLLIPOPS WILL BE AWARDED TO ANYONE WHO READS THROUGH IT, AND TELLS RABBI NICK THE CORRECT ANSWERS!
How old did a Levi have to be to work in the Mishkan? What type of trumpet sound would indicate the Tribes needing to journey? Which was the first tribe to start departing whenever they moved? Which foods did the Jews miss eating in Egypt? Where did the Jews travel to after leaving Kibrot Hata’avah? When do we say ‘Vayehi Binso’a Ha’Aron’ (10:35-36)?
Since Miriam took the time to watch over Moshe as he floated down the Nile as a baby, she was rewarded by having the Jewish People wait for her during her period of quarantine when she was struck with leprosy for speaking Lashon Harah.

COMMUNITY
In The Spotlight Ava Lewis This week we celebrate the Batmitzvah of Ava Lewis, daughter of Rebecca and Craig.
EDUCATION
Ava is a bright, cheerful and intelligent girl, who is no stranger to performing in public. Ava has put a great deal of effort into several unique projects for her Batmitzvah. She will deliver her D’var Torah to the community over Shabbat, a speech she has worked on for some time with her teacher, Rivi Brussel, and she led a special reading of Megillat Ruth for ladies and girls over Shavuot. Ava is musical and creative, and enjoys playing the piano and singing. She has performed in ‘Stage 80’ performances, as well as at events for her school, Yavneh. She also has a talent for creating short comedy films. Ava will be celebrating with her friends and family, most of whom live locally, though many will be coming from afar. We wish Mazaltov to Rebecca and Craig, as well as to proud grandparents Susan & David, and Craig’s mother, Ruth, and we thank them for their hospitality.
