First Aliyah - 14 verses G‑d commands Aaron to light the Menorah every day. Moses is commanded to initiate the Levites into service in the Mishkan. This procedure included shaving their bodies, immersing in a mikvah, and offering certain sacrifices. Second Aliyah - 12 verses The Levites are consecrated to G‑d. Towards the end of this section we learn the Levite service age-requirements and retirement age. Third Aliyah - 14 verses One year after the Exodus, the Jews are instructed to bring the Korban Pesach. Pesach Sheini is given as a solution to those who could not take part at the correct time. G‑d then gives Moses the laws of the Second Passover. Fourth Aliyah - 19 verses After the Tabernacle is erected, it is covered by a cloud during the day, and a fire by night. When the cloud lifted, the Jews would journey onwards, following the cloud until it came to rest in a new location of G‑d’s choosing. This section then discusses Moses’ two silver trumpets. These trumpets were used for several purposes. Fifth Aliyah - 24 verses Nearly one year after the Jews arrived at Mount Sinai, the cloud rises from the Tabernacle, signaling their departure. The Tabernacle is dismantled and they travele in formation. Yitro leaves the Jewish encampment. Sixth Aliyah - 31 verses The Jews start traveling, and almost immediately start complaining. First they complain about the journey. Then they grumble about the manna. G‑d tells Moses to gather seventy elders who will assist him in his leadership duties. He also promises to provide the Jews with an abundance of meat. Seventh Aliyah - 23 verses G‑d supplies quail to the Jews. Miriam is stricken with tzara’at (“leprosy”) for one week.
Sometimes the Jews could spend years in one place, and sometimes they would move after less than a day.

Delve into the deeper side of Judaism This week we take a look at the stresses of moving
To Move Or Not To Move Sammy Fine This week’s parshah discusses the imperfections of the Jewish people at great length. However, their achievements receive less attention from the commentators. The Torah tells us that when the Jews moved away from Mount Sinai to travel through the desert, Hashem set up a system to signal when to pack up and move, and when to rest. The Torah tells us the Jewish People followed Hashem’s orders faithfully, resting and travelling based upon the movement of the Clouds of Glory. “According to the word of Hashem they would journey and according to the word of Hashem they would camp.” The commentators are struck by the uncharacteristic wordiness of the narrative. It is known that the Torah does not waste so much as a single letter, yet here we find several verses describing how the Jewish People followed Hashem’s signals. No matter how lengthy or how brief the stay was in a specific location, the Jews packed up and moved whenever they saw the first sign of the
Cloud beginning to move. The Ramban addresses this issue. He explains that some encampments were uncomfortable and not enjoyable, and the Cloud was stationary for months on end. Imagine the scene; millions of people settle only to find that it is not a very pleasant place to be. They wait longingly for the Cloud to begin moving, but as it is resting on top of the Ohel Moed, no one
Sometimes we are too quick to judge the Jews who went through the Wilderness. will dare to make a move, so they wait patiently for the Cloud to start moving. Sometimes the situation was reversed! The Jews were on the move for many days and they were tired and weary. Then they reach a beautiful oasis with lakes and springs, and the Cloud halted. Thrilled to be in comfortable environments, they quickly pitched their tents, unpacked their belongings and settled down to rest their weary bones.
However, when they wake up, behold! The Cloud had started to move again! You might have thought that they would have complained and said “Move? Can’t we just stay in this spot for at least a couple of days?” But not a single member of the Jewish People complained. They packed up and followed the Cloud. To put things into perspective, research indicates that the most stressful life experience is moving house! Even before the loss of a parent! Stress or no stress, not one member of the Jewish People complained. They followed the Cloud faithfully. Sometimes, we are too quick to judge the Jews who went through the wilderness. We may find it easy to rebuke them for all their failures and sometimes think that we are above their behaviour. However, this week’s parshah should open our eyes to their unflinching faith and devotion to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. . Based on ‘The Midrash Says’ by Rabbi M. Weiss

Five mitzvot are mentioned in this week’s parsha: 3 positive commandments, and 2 prohibitions.
Here are the latest winners: May - Emma & Daniel Maslin - £15 June - Michelle & Simon Bloch - £15
Some people count the verses of ‘Vayehi bin’soa ha’Aron’ as a book in its own right. By that calculation, there are actually 7 books in the Torah!

Amidst the statement of our faith and loyalty to Hashem. We mention the importance of consistency in public and in private, and for our moral compass. We announce how fortunate we are to carry on the legacy and mission of our forefathers, and how privileged we are to declare the Hashem’s Oneness through the Shema, and then we recite the opening line of the Shema. This section was compiled during a period of intense persecu-

tion in the 5th century, when the Jews were forbidden by the Persian king, Yezdegerd II, to observe Shabbat and recite the Shema. To counteract his ruling, the Sages instituted reciting the first line, so that people could say it at home, and people could fulfill the mitzvah of saying the Shema, as in cases of extreme emergency, the first line is sufficient. How empowering it can be to realise how far we would go just to maintain our faith!
Since Miriam took the time to watch over Moshe as he floated down the Nile as a baby, she was rewarded by having the Jewish People wait for her during her period of quarantine when she was struck with leprosy for speaking Lashon Harah.

Although they are not strictly milestone birthdays for Nicola, Simon or Dassi, they felt that even the ‘minor’ celebrations deserve to be shared with the community. It could also be that they were feeling left out. After all, Hannah got married earlier this year, and Sammy celebrated becoming barmitzvah. We wish a very happy birthday to Nicola, Simon and Dassi, and we thank them for their hospitality. If you have a birthday or anniversary approaching, and would like to sponsor a kiddush, please contact Michelle Sallon, who would be delighted to help arrange.
