A crucial lesson can be learnt here. The Torah would never leave a word our if it really belonged there. However, the danger of thinking that destructive arguments are considered ‘Emet’, - especially given our natural inclinations to get caught up in

First Aliyah - 20 verses G-d allows Moses to send scouts to examine the land of Canaan in preparation for their anticipated invasion. One member of every tribe, with the exception of the tribe of Levi, was chosen for this task. Moses instructs the scouts to bring back a report regarding the nature of the land, and to bring back samples of the land’s produce. Second Aliyah - 20 verses After forty days, the scouts return with a negative report. The Jewish people spend the entire night wailing, preferring to return to Egypt rather than be defeated in battle. Third Aliyah - 18 verses The Jewish people reject the pleas of Joshua and Caleb. G-d informs Moses of His decision to wipe out the Israelites in a massive plague due to their persistent lack of faith. Moses successfully invokes G-d’s mercy. However, that generation are forbidden from entering the Land. Fourth Aliyah - 27 verses The Israelites must wander in the desert for forty years. During that time, all males over the age of twenty will perish. The next generation will enter the Promised Land. The ten scouts who brought back the frightful report die immediately. A group of people try to enter the Land of Israel alone, but they are massacred by the Amalekites and Canaanites. Fifth Aliyah - 9 verses Discusses flour offerings to be brought with various sacrifices. Sixth Aliyah - 10 verses Details the mitzvah of challah, and a situation where the Sanhedrin erroneously permits an act of idolatry. Seventh Aliyah - 15 verses Lists the punishments for one who worships idols. A man who desecrates Shabbat is executed. The final parsha talks about the mitzvah of tzitzit, which aids us in remembering all the commandments.
Calev went to pray at the Cave of Machpela to ask that he should not return with a negative report like the other Spies.

Delve into the deeper side of Judaism This week we examine the requirement to spend 40 years in the wilderness
Favour or Punishment? As punishment for the Jew’s lack of faith in Hashem following the Spies’ report, the Jewish People were told that they would be kept in the Wilderness over 40 years. Hashem explained that the generation that saw His miracles in Egypt and iin the wilderness, and yet tested Him ten times will not enter the Land. All the men between twenty and sixty, (all those who are eligible for military service) would have to dig their own graves, and would die, usually on 9th Av. The death decree did not include the following groups: Joshua and Calev. The women, because they did not participate in the people’s sins, but were always loyal to Hashem and to Moshe. Men above sixty. The members of the Tribe of Levi, since they had not participated in the Sin of the Golden Calf, of the Spies, and in other rebellious incidents. The decree that the Jewish People tarry in the wilder-
ness actually benefitted them in several ways: Hashem said, “Originally, I had sworn in My wrath that the generation of the wilderness forfeit their Olam Habah. Later, however, I acted mercifully and annulled My oath. Since the Jews willingly accepted My decree, to the extent of preparing their own graves and going into them, their sins were atoned and they will be spared from eternal
Hashem detained the Jews in the wilderness until the Canaanites had...rebuilt punishment.” The forty years of wandering also benefitted those entering the Land. When the Canaanites heard that the Jewish People were on their way to the Land, they cut down their trees and burnt their houses, so that those entering would find a bare, devastated country. Hashem detained the Jews in the wilderness until the Canaanites had recultivated their soil and rebuilt
their homes. Hashem said, “If I bring the people to Eretz Yisrael immediately, each one will hurry to his field and his vineyard and devote all his energy to tending them Let Me seclude the Jews in the desert for a forty year period, during which they will study Torah, while eating the Manna. They will then enter the Land purified
A group of people decided to demonstrate their remorse for requesting to return to Egypt. Moshe warned them that they will not succeed, for the shechina is not with them. Hashem would not assist them, and they will suffer defeat at the hands of the enemy.
Nonetheless, they disregarded Moshe’s words. The very next morning, they ascended the mountain that leads to Eretz Yisrael. The Amalek and Canaanites who lived there, attacked them, and wiped them out. Based on ‘The Midrash Says’ by Rabbi M. Weiss

The section of ‘Korbanot’ is often skipped according to English custom, in order to accommodate those who are rushing to leave for work. The section is primarily comprised of four or more biblical passages related to daily communal sacrifices in Temple times, a chapter of Mishnayot, and a piece of Talmud. This is in order to satisfy the teaching in the Talmud that one should make time every day for the study of Scripture, Mishnah
and Gemara. If people are otherwise too busy to make a learning schedule, they would still fulfill the requirement.
We are taught that in the absence of our Holy Temple, Hashem will consider any study of this topic as if we had actually brought the sacrifices themselves. For this reason, it is advantageous to spend some time exploring this area.
Three mitzvot are mentioned in this week’s parsha: 2 positive commandments, and 1 prohibition. Part of the problem with sending spies was that the Jewish People should have had flawless faith in Hashem that He would have taken them into the Land of Israel safely. The day on which the Jewish People wept because of the Spies’ report, was the 9th Av. Since then, many of our national tragedies have occurred on this day, including the desruction of both Temples. The Jewish People should have entered the Land of Israel merely months after leaving Egypt. Their punishment meant they could not enter until 40 years had passed.

In The Spotlight Maxine & Stuart Marks
This Shabbat, Maxine and Stuart are hosting kiddush to mark their Silver Wedding Anniversary. They were married 25 years ago in Whitefield Shul, but settled in Hale. They have just returned from their second honeymoon in Rome and Venice, where, being the active runners that they are, did an early morning speed tour of each city, taking in all the sites in the space of an hour! They are delighted to share their simcha with the community, and following kiddush in Shule, they also invite the community to a kiddunch in their home, 18 Broad Lane. We wish them Mazaltov and only health and happiness for the future.
The Unveiling For Debbie Sverdloff, Jeremy Hart’s sister, will take place Sunday at 2.00pm at Ecclesfield Cemetery, Sheffield, Colley Road.
