Yosef’s two dreams foretold the superi-

teous hero who survived Egyptian influence. When a man amasses wealth and power, they do not become a part of him, making him inherently any greater. They simply make his ‘bundle’ more important, requiring people with less means to pay their respects to it. The first dream foretold the deference Yosef’s brothers would be forced to pay him as viceroy of Egypt, but this was a respect paid to Yosef’s bundle and not to his essential self. The second dream, with its heavenly bodies,

his entire family. Spiritual achievements become part of the very being of a person

Our goal on Chanukah is to involve everybody in the celebration of the miraculous historical events, and to share the light of Torah with as many people as possible. Stories of good overcoming evil are even more necessary in today’s troubled world. In the giving of gifts we are limited by financial constraints, but in sharing light and love we are unlimited; an infinite number of candles can be lit from one flame. Let us strive to focus our families on the spiritual messages of Chanukah rather than the materialistic messages around us, and spread light in the darkness.

First Aliyah - 11 verses Jacob makes a special robe of fine wool for Joseph. Joseph’s brothers become jealous of the favouritism. Joseph relates to his brothers two dreams he had, both implying that he would eventually rule over his brothers which only increase his brothers’ envy and hatred. Second Aliyah - 11 verses Jacob sends Joseph to see how his brothers and their flocks were faring. When Joseph’s brothers see him approaching, they plot to kill him. Reuven, however, persuades them not to shed blood, advising them instead to cast him into one of the nearby pits. Reuven’s plan was to later return and rescue Joseph from the pit. Third Aliyah - 14 verses Joseph arrives and his brothers strip him of his fancy robe and cast him into a pit. Yehudah advises that they sell him. He is sold to an Ishmaelite caravan traveling to Egypt, who in turn sell him as a slave to Potiphar, Pharaoh’s chief butcher. Meanwhile, the brothers dip Joseph’s robe into blood, and show it to Jacob, who assumes that Joseph is dead. Jacob then commences 22 years of mourning for his beloved son. Fourth Aliyah - 30 verses The story of Joseph is interrupted by the episode of Judah and Tamar. Fifth Aliyah - 6 verses We return to the story of Joseph, who was serving in the home of Potiphar. G-d made Joseph successful in all his endeavors. Potiphar puts Joseph in charge of his entire household and estate. Sixth Aliyah - 17 verses Potiphar’s wife makes many advances, but he steadfastly refused her. Eventually she arranges for Joseph to be thrown into prison. G-d is still with Joseph, and he is put in charge of all the prisoners. Seventh Aliyah - 23 verses Joseph interprets the dreams of Pharoah’s chief butler and chief baker.

Delve into the deeper side of Judaism This week we focus on the importance of Torah study in Judaism

Go Compare Every Jew, after his life in this world is ended, will be brought before the Heavenly Tribunal. He will be asked, “Did you make Torah study a priority during your life?” The pauper will defend himself, saying, “What should I have done? I had to support my family. How would we have lived, had I studied Torah?” “Who was poorer, you or the sage, Hillel?” will be the reply. “Hillel earnt next to nothing, yet half his income would be used to gain entrance to the study hall, while the rest was used to provide for his family. One day, when he had no money, he climbed up to the roof of the building to hear the words of Torah. Snow began to fall. The next morning, they noticed the study hall was dark. They looked up and saw the frozen figure of a man in the skylight. They took him down and revived him by the fire. If Hillel could do it, why not you?” The well-to-do businessman will excuse himself,

saying, “What could I do? I had to keep my business going. I was unable to study any more Torah than I actually did.” The reply to this will be, “Are you wealthier than Rabbi Elazar ben Charsum was? He owned a thousand villages on land and a thousand ships at sea, but he never knew what they looked like. He preferred to spend day and night

Your Torah must be covering up the facts as they really happened! studying Torah. If he could do it, why not you?” A sensuous person will be asked, “What stopped you from learning Torah?” “What should I have done? I am handsome and was unable to control my passions. Life is full of pleasures! How could I pass them up to study Torah?” “Are you more handsome than Joseph? Potiphar’s wife tempted him daily, changing her clothes three

times a day, but he still overcame his yetser harah. Why could you not take an example from Joseph?” A Roman noblewoman asked Rabbi Yossi bar Chalafta, “How is it conceivable that Joseph, at the height of his passions, should have prevented himself from committing a sin with Potiphar’s wife? Your Torah must be covering up the facts as they really happened!” Rabbi Yossi took out a Sefer Bereishit and read to her the story of Judah and Tamar, and Reuben and Bilhah. He told her, “the Torah spared neither Reuben, nor Judah, but instead publicised their mistakes. Do you think that the sin of Joseph, who was a slave, and younger than them, would have been concealed?” “Your words are true, and your Torah is true!” she admitted. Based on ‘The Midrash Says’ by Rabbi M. Weissman

Did You Know Jacob gave Joseph a fancy robe so that the brothers would NOT be jealous. The fancy ‘exterior’ was supposed to make them think that Joseph lacked a fancy ‘interior’. Reuven was intending to come back and rescue Joseph from the pit when his brothers were not looking.

QA &

Commentaries point out that just as Jacob deceived his father with a garment and a goat, so too he was deceived by his brothers with a garment and a goat, when they used blood to make Jacob think that his son had been viciously attacked. Read through the Parsha in English and find answers to the questions. LOLLIPOPS WILL BE AWARDED TO ANYONE WHO READS THROUGH IT, AND TELLS RABBI NICK THE CORRECT ANSWERS!

Where were Joseph’s brothers when he went to look for them? Who tried to save Joseph from being killed? What were the names of Judah’s sons? What was Potiphar’s job in Egypt? Who were the two people who related their dreams to Joseph? Who did the brothers sell Joseph to?

Just For Fun Question: Who was the first tennis player in the Torah? Answer: Joseph. He served in Pharoah’s court.

Aubrey was a founder member of our community, and attended the very first Shabbat service with his two eldest sons, Darryl and Jeremy. He loved the Shule dearly, and was a strong supporter of the daily services, something for his children to emulate. Aside from the kiddush, we will also be treated to a special haftarah reading; a team effort between Darryl, Jeremy and Benjamin. They also joined up in for a haftarah in celebration of Aubrey’s 80th birthday a few years ago. The Shule will be buzzing with ten of Aubrey’s fourteen grandchildren this Shabbat, although Aubrey’s daughter, Suzie will not be arriving from Israel until later in the week. We wish a chayim arukim to Sonia, and to all of the Lee family, and we are grateful for their hospitality.
