First Aliyah - 11 verses Jacob makes a special robe of fine wool for Joseph. Joseph’s brothers become jealous of the favouritism. Joseph relates to his brothers two dreams he had, both implying that he would eventually rule over his brothers which only increase his brothers’ envy and hatred. Second Aliyah - 11 verses Jacob sends Joseph to see how his brothers and their flocks were faring. When Joseph’s brothers see him approaching, they plot to kill him. Reuven, however, persuades them not to shed blood, advising them instead to cast him into one of the nearby pits. Reuven’s plan was to later return and rescue Joseph from the pit. Third Aliyah - 14 verses Joseph arrives and his brothers strip him of his fancy robe and cast him into a pit. Yehudah advises that they sell him. He is sold to an Ishmaelite caravan traveling to Egypt, who in turn sell him as a slave to Potiphar, Pharaoh’s chief butcher. Meanwhile, the brothers dip Joseph’s robe into blood, and show it to Jacob, who assumes that Joseph is dead. Jacob then commences 22 years of mourning for his beloved son. Fourth Aliyah - 30 verses The story of Joseph is interrupted by the episode of Judah and Tamar. Fifth Aliyah - 6 verses We return to the story of Joseph, who was serving in the home of Potiphar. G-d made Joseph successful in all his endeavors. Potiphar puts Joseph in charge of his entire household and estate. Sixth Aliyah - 17 verses Potiphar’s wife makes many advances, but he steadfastly refused her. Eventually she arranges for Joseph to be thrown into prison. G-d is still with Joseph, and he is put in charge of all the prisoners. Seventh Aliyah - 23 verses Joseph interprets the dreams of Pharoah’s chief butler and chief baker.

Delve into the deeper side of Judaism This week we focus on the importance of Torah study in Judaism
Go Compare Every Jew, after his life in this world is ended, will be brought before the Heavenly Tribunal. He will be asked, “Did you make Torah study a priority during your life?” The pauper will defend himself, saying, “What should I have done? I had to support my family. How would we have lived, had I studied Torah?” “Who was poorer, you or the sage, Hillel?” will be the reply. “Hillel earnt next to nothing, yet half his income would be used to gain entrance to the study hall, while the rest was used to provide for his family. One day, when he had no money, he climbed up to the roof of the building to hear the words of Torah. Snow began to fall. The next morning, they noticed the study hall was dark. They looked up and saw the frozen figure of a man in the skylight. They took him down and revived him by the fire. If Hillel could do it, why not you?”
I had to keep my business going. I was unable to study any more Torah than I actually did.” The reply to this will be, “Are you wealthier than Rabbi Elazar ben Charsum was? He owned a thousand villages on land and a thousand ships at sea, but he never knew what they looked like. He preferred to spend day and night studying Torah. If he could do it, why not you?” A sensuous person will be
Your Torah must be covering up the facts as they really happened! asked, “What stopped you from learning Torah?” “What should I have done? I am handsome and was unable to control my passions. Life is full of pleasures! How could I pass them up to study Torah?”
Why could you not take an example from Joseph?” A Roman noblewoman asked Rabbi Yossi bar Chalafta, “How is it conceivable that Joseph, at the height of his passions, should have prevented himself from committing a sin with Potiphar’s wife? Your Torah must be covering up the facts as they really happened!” Rabbi Yossi took out a Sefer Bereishit and read to her the story of Judah and Tamar, and Reuben and Bilhah. He told her, “the Torah spared neither Reuben, nor Judah, but instead publicised their mistakes. Do you think that the sin of Joseph, who was a slave, and younger than them, would have been concealed?” “Your words are true, and your Torah is true!” she admitted.
Based on ‘The Midrash Says’ “Are you more handsome by Rabbi M. Weissman than Joseph? Tip #9 Say It Like You Mean It
TEFILLAH TIPS
Do you understand the prayers that we say? Even if you pray in English, do you feel like you are talking to Hashem? Do you speak with emotion, reacting to the varied elements of the service? Some parts of davening should be said with trepidation, some with joy, some with gratitude, and some with fear.
Understand what you are saying and apply the correct emotion. In the same way that a human relationship will not develop without the injection of personality and emotion, we cannot expect our prayers to uplift us or provide meaning without some investment in this area.
Did You Know Jacob gave Joseph a fancy robe so that the brothers would NOT be jealous. The fancy ‘exterior’ was supposed to make them think that Joseph lacked a fancy ‘interior’. Reuven was intending to come back and rescue Joseph from the pit when his brothers were not looking. Commentaries point out that just as Jacob deceived his father with a garment and a goat, so too he was deceived by his brothers with a garment and a goat, when they used blood to make Jacob think that his son had been viciously attacked.
Just For Fun Question: Who was the first tennis player in the Torah? Answer: Joseph. He served in Pharoah’s court.

EDUCATION
Chanukah Toy Drive Hale played a crucial role in the fourth Chanukah Toy Drive, in conjunction with Camp Simcha, GIFT and the Manchester Charitable Trust. Boxes were placed in several locations around North and South Manchester, including North Cheshire, and the Hale, Bowdon, Shaare Chayim, and Cheadle Shuls. By the time of the deadlline, over 300 toys and gifts had been donated across Manchester. The toys were sorted by a group of our youth, as pictured above, who allocated each toy to recipients at the Starlight Ward at Wythenshawe Hospital, the Manchester Royal Infirmary, and less-fortunate children from around Manchester and beyond.
Adult Education programmes close for the winter break on Thursday 22 December and will resume on Tuesday 3 January If you would like to sponsor an edition of ‘Something For Everyone’, in honour of a simcha or for a yahrzeit, or for any reason, please contact the Shule office on 0161 980 8846 or admin@hale-community.org.uk
