Six Spheros have arrived at the Haida Gwaii Public Library Branches! What is a Sphero?
It is very tough, waterproof, shock absorbent and delightful.
A Sphero is a robot, a code-teaching tool, a time-bomb, a footsie player, a maze-runner, a story-teller, a pet-entertainer, a speller, a mathematician, an artist.
Spheros are making the rounds of the schools, and then they will be available for loan at the branches in the New Year. Ask at your branch to see if you can play with it in the library.
What can it do? It can be driven like a remote-control toy car, even by very young toddlers. It can be programmed to ‘write-roll’ letters or numbers or geometrical shapes by pre-schoolers learning very early literacy skills. It can be coded to tell stories by sliding blocks of pre-coded actions into sequences, which it can then act out – a favourite activity for primary and elementary school students. And it can be programmed to create new actions and games in various computer languages like Java Script by high school students. The future is now! Besides being loads of fun for all ages, it gets kids and their adults ready for the future by coding robots to perform actions in the world. It promotes a creative approach to computers, rather than a consumer approach, as the player can quickly become the creator. It looks like a clear ball about the size of a baseball, with machinery inside. It lights up, flashes different colours, spins, jumps, “explodes”, gallops like a horse, rolls in every direction, speaks, and loves to play outdoors. To operate it, you need a mobile device, such as a Samsung phone or tablet, or an iPhone or iPad. You download a free app called Sphero Edu, and then you are off to the coding races. The VI Regional Library – Haida Gwaii is now on facebook! Give our page a “like” and get the latest information about library events and services right here on Haida Gwaii.

Gift Giving, Back in the Day by Shellene Van der Beke
N
owadays, purchasing seasonal or special occasion gifts is done either at a variety of local retail shops, from community artisans and handcrafters exhibiting at gift fairs or, more and more, via the World Wide Web. Back in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s, although many gifts were handmade, most shopping was done via leather-bound, upwards of 1500-page catalogues found in the town’s general store.
The sight of mailed packages would have us kidbouncing on our toes with glee. At this time of year of course, Mom and Dad somehow kept many gifts that came in the mail stealthily hidden, not to be seen again until Christmas morning, all wrapped up with twirled ribbon and shiny bows (that post-opening we hung and stuck all over each other).
Although there are still a few companies that send out printed catalogues (selling specialty items like seeds, Ordering from catalogues has been the same process for centuries: you picked out the item, wrote down the name home furnishings and unique gifts, etc.), sadly, retailer Sears Canada, after a 65-year run, recently of the item or its number on an ordering form, and then announced the closure of all of its operations; their cataeither handed it in to the storekeeper or mailed it, along logue business included. EXPLORING IDEAS ABOUT RECONCILIATION Building on its success in Skidegate, the Haida Gwaii Higher Education Society has extended its semester program into Massett with an innovative semester in Reconciliation Studies. One of the first courses of its kind to be offered in Canada, the Reconciliation Studies Semester has already attracted a full class of students from universities across the country. The program, which started in September and will wrap up in December, is exploring ideas about reconciliation and restitution, including an international perspective, as well as a focus on Haida Gwaii. The course brings together indigenous and non-indigenous instructors to offer wide-ranging perspectives on a variety of content. As the Higher Education Society explains, “In the local context, students are exposed to perspectives of reconciliation on Haida Gwaii through engagement with local guest lecturers both inside the classroom and out in the field, and through the close examination of protocols, shared decision-making processes, and comanagement systems specific to Haida Gwaii.”

The new semester complements the other two semesters already offered by HGHES, which focus on natural resources and are taught in Skidegate, in partnership with the Faculty of Forestry at UBC. HGHES says that Haida Gwaii offers a microcosm of the world, allowing students to learn first-hand about social, cultural, political, ecological and economic issues facing natural resource managers, as well as offering opportunities to engage with the community and immerse themselves in the lifestyle of the islands. While these semesters have been successful, HGHES continues to look at ideas for new programming to ensure its longterm sustainability. In 2016, the Gwaii Trust board approved a grant of $25,000 to help the society work on its new business plan, as well as up to $100,000 to fund the Reconciliation Studies pilot project. The Gwaii Trust recognizes the social and economic benefits that this kind of educational programming is bringing to our communities, and we applaud HGHES’s efforts to build a strong and sustainable post-secondary presence here.
To help attract local students to the Reconciliation Studies semester, Gwaii Trust directors also approved a request from HGHES for two $10,500 scholarships (a total of $21,000). One of the Gwaii Trust scholarships was awarded to Joel Richardson of Skidegate, who is in his third year of studies at Vancouver Island University, and hopes to return to the islands after he graduates and work with the Haida Nation. In a message to the Gwaii Trust, Joel told us he was grateful for the opportunity to take the Reconciliation Semester, which is allowing him to focus on what he cares about most: the wellness of Haida Gwaii and the people who live here. “I have nothing but gratitude to the committee,” he said. “Thank you for your contribution.” The other scholarship was awarded to Marijke Vanderlinden, who is originally from Masset and is now studying law at Dalhousie University. She wants to eventually work in government, law and policy on behalf of the indigenous and environmental communities. Marijke told us the course so far has been completely life-changing. “There’s so much pain and passion and strength here, and there’s so much to learn,” she said. “Thank you so much, I wouldn’t have been able to do this without you.”

Care with Dignity at Home and Abroad
By Liz Wouters
“It’s so good to see the ocean again!” Dr. James Chrones exclaimed with a smile, looking out the window of the Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii General Hospital. It’s only been three weeks since he returned from a ten month mission in landlocked and hot Ethiopia - so hot it was impossible to stay in his living quarters, a canvas tent, for the day. In the dry season, temperatures hovered around 45 degrees with wood smoke and dust choking the air. The wet season was cooler (35 degrees) but torrential rains brought mud, flooding and malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Dehydration was a daily risk, which he soon learned could lead to impaired judgement, such as deciding to chase a dangerous snake out of the refugee camp’s medical clinic! Dr. Chrones volunteered with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders. His job was to teach and manage medical staff in the delivery of patient care. The patients were South Sudanese refugees who had crossed the dangerous border into the Gambella region of Ethiopia, escaping war, rape, kidnapping and robbery. They now lived in shelters made of mud, grass and plastic tarp, in the Kule refugee camp of fifty thousand people, and suffered from malaria, malnutrition, tuberculosis and HIV. Watery diarrhea was common due to poor hygiene and
12
HG
contaminated water. The clinic had minimal lab and x-ray machines. It was common to run out of medications (delivered only twice a year), which resulted in scrounging from nearby clinics or just making do. More frustrating and demoralizing was the high incidence of children’s deaths, usually due to malnutrition. Medical staff struggled with questions like, “What else can we do here? Should we have done something different?” To avoid falling into hopelessness, Dr. Chrones and his colleagues reminded themselves, “For each person who dies, we’re still saving so many.”
“…everything depends on good relationships.” —Dr. James Chrones
determine the nature of care delivered by volunteers,” explained Dr. Chrones. “MSF is an advocate and witness to what is going on around the world. But it’s becoming harder and harder to not compromise these roles. There’s more co-opting through military services, for example, humanitarian aid delivered by military personnel, that makes it more dangerous for pure humanitarian agencies like MSF.” To ensure the safety of MSF staff, it must be seen as neutral and not aligned with any one side of a political conflict. Small but powerful actions help maintain this neutrality. For example, “In the field, MSF vehicles will not carry any person wearing a uniform and anyone seeking medical help must remove their uniform first,” said Dr. Chrones. Also, MSF will not accept government or corporate donations, and relies on the goodwill of private donors.
This mission was Dr. Chrones’ first MSF and international volunteer experience. After all was said and done, he explained, After years of providing medical care on “The saving grace was that at least we Haida Gwaii, he felt frustrated with the treated each patient with dignity and increasing bureaucracy in his job. And respect, no matter what else we could having reached mid-life, where “the other offer them.” horizon of life is closer, it was time to give back while I was still young and healthy.” MSF commits to remaining independent, He then added, “Also, my children were neutral, impartial and serving with digniold enough now to deal with the uncerty, providing humanitarian medical care tainty if anything went wrong. I had to to those that need it most. “These values seize the moment!”
Top Left: Most MSF workers are national staff such as these health officers and nurses posing with Dr Chrones outside a mobile clinic. Middle Left: Wood-framed, mud, grass and tarp “tukuls” house refugees in the Kule refugee camp. Top Right: An MSF mobile clinic provides roadside care when a sudden influx of thousands of South Sudanese refugees enter Ethiopia. Bottom: Refugees wait in muddy waters for registration with United Nations and Ethiopian authorities.
After researching the organization and a lengthy application process, MSF assigned Dr. Chrones to Ethiopia, based on his primary care medical skill set and his self-identified risk tolerance level. Despite thorough attempts to prepare for the new adventure, Dr. Chrones soon found out, “Everything was new- living in a tent in a crowded compound with restricted movement, international colleagues, medical and cultural protocols, the environment. It was very stressful to have to adapt to so much newness all at once. And it was important to monitor myself, in how am I coping with this
stress? I knew I had to make changes soon to prevent being overwhelmed.” The advice he offers to anyone who is considering a similar life-changing experience? “Do it. Before you go, do the research. Talk to as many people as you can. Limit your imagination on how you think things will or should be. Disillusionment is the hardest thing. Be open and aware. Once you’re there, remember, everything depends on good relationships.” Dr. Chrones admits he is still processing this whole mission. “As a result
of a big experience like this, you won’t know how you’ll change. Even when you return, you’ll undergo transformation. It’s still changing me even now.” He is barely a month back into his Queen Charlotte medical practice where diseases and living conditions are not as overwhelming as in Ethiopia and medications and diagnostic tests are readily available. But still, the principle of dignified care is ever present. “Everybody has problems. We can help patients navigate the process,” Dr. Chrones said. “We can help them feel respected and positive; and let them know they will get through this.”

Time Management for the Busy Entrepreneur For an entrepreneur 24 hours in a day is often not enough! You find yourself with a never-ending list of things to do - jumping between tasks, all the while, tending to the needs of your clients and customers. Diving into entrepreneurship means you’ve given up the luxuries of only thinking about your job between the hours of 9-5. You live, sleep, eat, and breathe your small business. So, since we can’t add more than 24 hours to our day, perhaps you can find ways to use those hours more effectively by trying one of these strategies. Planning ahead: Pick a time to create a detailed list of to-dos for the next day. Prioritize those tasks and use a scheduling system so you don’t need to rely on your memory! This will help you move from a more reactive state to one that is thoughtful and proactive.
Make your health a priority: Taking care of yourself means you will be better equipped to show up and take care of your business, staff, customers and clients. Take a lunch break, get adequate sleep and prioritize your own health needs. Track your time: This will help to identify time-wasters, distractions, and in general, help you get a better sense of how you are using your time and if this is working for you. Time management takes effort, commitment and focus. Our communities need healthy, well-rested and energized entrepreneurs! Haida Gwaii Community Futures offers free business coaching – this can include revisiting your organizational and time management systems and helping you to identify more effective strategies for your coming season.

However you do it - using a free app, your calendar or plain ol’ pen and paper, ask yourselves these questions: “What am I doing too much of, what’s taking longer than I thought, what could I hand off and what am I not doing enough of?”

A Bandsaw Alaskan Mill? By Craig Carmichael
An example of an Alaskan mill
W
hen I moved to Haida Gwaii last May, I had some very large spruce trees cut down right next to my new home. I wanted the lumber from them, but I couldn't budge the logs to get them onto my small, homemade sawmill unless I cut them down to about 5 feet long - and regardless, they'd be too wide anyway. This is the conundrum people having a tree or a few trees face: it's impractical to haul and mill only a few logs. What can be done besides cut them into firewood? Enter the Alaskan mill. Instead of using heavy equipment to cart a few heavy logs to a large sawmill, a sturdy chainsaw with an Alaskan mill attachment cuts the log right where it lies. A wide board is carefully nailed flat on top to guide the first straight cut along the log. Once the log has a flat side or two, the mill can further dice it up into movable slabs or rectangular pieces. But it is slow and noisy, uses a lot of power and gasoline, and turns a lot of wood into sawdust with each cut. It can cut boards, but except for making big beams, the movable pieces are often taken to a sawmill that will

cut much faster and not turn so much potential lumber into sawdust. I recently purchased a large chainsaw and borrowed a mill attachment to Alaskan mill the spruce logs. Somewhere along the way I got the idea that it might be possible to create a bandsaw version of an Alaskan mill (a "BC Bandsaw Alaskan mill concept drawing mill"? or "Gwaii mill"?). This would be made specifically to mill, but it would be used the same way, as my large chainsaw with a mill attachment, cutting the log in situ. If all goes well, I may build more than one size and model; perhaps both gas and 120-volt electric. Could it become a lumber milling method of choice? Let's find out!

Hunger on Haida Gwaii
Christmas Giving A
roof over one’s head, clothes on one’s back and food to eat are key blessings that make for a happy life. According to Food Banks Canada, thirteen percent of Canadians live in a state of food insecurity, which means they do not have reliable access to adequate amounts of safe, good-quality and nutritious food. Haida Gwaii is no different. We too have citizens in need and our island communities are rich with kindness and giving.
The Greater Masset Food Bank The Greater Masset Food Bank’s mandate is to provide dignified access to healthy food for community members in Masset, Old Massett and Port Clements without judgement or prejudice. On December 18th from 1-4pm lunch and food such as potatoes, carrots and onions will be provided at the Adult Day Program building located at 510 Naanii Street in Old Massett. For more information call Chris Horner at 250-626-7517.
Feed the People Food Bank, Queen Charlotte “There is a large, hidden segment of our population who struggle to meet their food requirements each day,” said Bonnie Olson, Victims
18
HG
Services / Outreach Coordinator at the Islands Wellness Society (IWS). And she added, “We are privileged to live here on Haida Gwaii with abundant fresh, wild food like fish, deer, mushrooms and berries. But, these sources are not available to those in poverty who can’t afford a vehicle, boat or gas to travel to places to get this food.” Olson also notes that the Council of the Haida Nation often generously donates food fish to many residents of Haida Gwaii. For the last five years, the Feed the People Food Bank (FTPFB), a volunteer project of the IWS, has handed out money vouchers totalling between $3-4,000 each month. This equals approximately 200 people, including children, who have received support. Cash donations are welcome and can be deposited into the FTPFB account #1010230 at any branch of the Northern Savings Credit Union. People with needs self-identify themselves. They don’t need to formally apply, explained Olson. While the FTPFB is primarily a voucher program, donations of the following foods are deeply appreciated for the emergency food bags that are handed out each month: • Canned fruits and vegetables, fish, meat, pasta sauce, lentils and beans.
• Dry forms of pasta & lentils as well as rice (perfect as healthy snack foods for children). • Coffee, tea and cocoa Food donations can be dropped off at the IWS office located at 204 Oceanview Drive in Queen Charlotte. For those in need, the next FTPFB voucher day is December 15th from 10-12pm at IWS office or 12-1pm at the Skidegate United Church located at 183, 3rd Avenue. To apply for this food support program, leave a message at 250 559-4100. An IWS staff member will return your call. FTPFB serves QC, Sandspit, Skidegate, Tlell and Port Clements residents.
Queen Charlotte Christmas Hamper Program So far, forty requests have been made this year for a QC Christmas Hamper, said Debbie Gardiner, coordinator for this program. “No personal information needs to be shared when making a request. It’s not easy to admit you need a hamper,” she said. The program stresses confidentiality. “When people come to the designated place to pick up their hamper, only Colleen Bradley and possibly one helper are present,” she added. “She gets lots of hugs, some with tears.”
In addition to food hampers, gift certificates for children and teens are handed out. For more information phone Colleen at 250 559-1806. Donations in support of this wonderful, Christmas food security program can be made via their NSCU account #703496, by sending an e-transfer (in contact name box put: QC Food Hamper) to anvilcove@haidagwaii.net or by cheque (made out to the Queen Charlotte Food Hamper) mailed to PO Box 454, Queen Charlotte, BC V0T 1S0.
Stuff the Cruisers, Skidegate On December 15th, the RCMP are hosting the annual “Stuff the Cruisers” food and donation drive in front of the Skidegate Fire Hall. The Skidegate Band Council gives hampers to young families, elders and social assistance clients in Skidegate and Queen Charlotte, said Michelle McDonald, Skidegate Band Councillor. This event is part of our annual call-out for Christmas donations, explained McDonald. “We have already raised $23,000 in the last two weeks from the Band Council, local companies and our off-island contractors.” Their goal is to put together 200 hampers. “So far, we have around 160 hampers in place,” she added.
Lord of Life Church Voucher Program, Sandspit “People on these islands are extremely kind and generous,” said Gail Henry, contact person for the Sandspit Lord of Life Church voucher program. “We receive approximately $3,000 in donations from the church, organizations and individuals so we can give grocery vouchers to people in need,” she explained. Priority is given to families, but support is given to anyone who needs extra help. Recipients are often identified by community members. “They’ll say, I know so and so is having a tough time and could use a boost.” Gail can be reached at 250-637-2212. To make a donation, make your cheque payable to Lord of Life Church, indicate “Christmas Hampers” in the memo line, and then mail the cheque to Lord of Life Church, PO Box 188, Sandspit, BC V0T 1T0. Is it due to our feedback loop. “Children may be more inclined to use modern-day expectations of becoming super-efficient risky behaviors to get their parents’ attention...when their multi-taskers or is it just our addiction to our screens and parents are on their phones.” the virtual world? GGSC suggests our phones are here to stay, but we need to Research abounds on the value of being present and foexert control over our phone use. Three of their parenting cussed at work, in parenting and in relationships. tips (applicable to adult relationships as well) on how to do this are:
Multi-tasking is a Myth
Science has proven we cannot do more than one thing at a time. (Many will disagree with this statement saying, “I always do multiple things at the same time.”) The truth is, multi-tasking increases the time it takes to complete a task and results in more errors. (Don’t believe it? Try the eye-opening multi-tasking exercise on the next page).

1. Place your phone in another room (or turn off notifications), especially when you’re helping your child learn something new. Kids learn best when focussed adults are teaching them because they are paying attention to the same thing at the same time together. 2. Keep your phone in your back pocket [or purse] when you’re at your kids’ games or at the playground: kids
not only notice when their parents aren’t responsive to them, they will falter less when a parent is watching and cheering them on. 3. Instead of mindlessly checking the phone frequently, do so only when it’s connected to a specific task like checking in with a partner, or with a friend, on where to meet for the kids’ play date.”
If texting or Facebook messaging has become one of our main ways of building relationships, perhaps it is time to think again. Virtual communications offer none of the support people feel when you are with them in person. We all crave to be truly seen, heard and affirmed. At this gift-giving time of the year, it seems our “presence” could be the most welcome present of all!
Multi-tasking is a Myth Exercise Are you as productive as you think you are? The following exercise will help you quickly see the negative impact on efficiency by multi-tasking. You will need: pen or pencil, and a clock with a second hand or an online stopwatch. Exercise A: Make a mental note of your start time or start your stopwatch and then print the following phrase, “MULTI-TASKING IS A MYTH” in the space to the right of #1. Then, in the space to the right of #2, print numbers 1 to 20 (These numbers correspond with the
number of letters and hyphen in the phrase “Multi-tasking is a Myth”). Record the time you took to complete this exercise. Exercise B: Again, make a mental note of your start time or start your stopwatch. Print the same phrase, “MULTI-TASKING IS A MYTH” in the space to the right of #3, but this time, you will print one letter, then one number, then one letter, then one number and so on. (For example: M 1 U 2 L 3 T 4 and so on.) Once you complete printing all the letters alternating with all the numbers, record the time you took to complete this exercise.
Exercise A Print phrase: #1 Print numbers 1-20: #2 Time to complete activity:
Exercise B Print letters of phrase mixed with numbers: #3 Time to complete activity: Now compare the time you took in the first and second activities. Typically, a person who is multi-tasking will a) take much longer to complete the second activity, b) see a decrease in the quality of work, and c) experience more stress in completing the exercise. This is proof that multi-tasking truly is a myth!

HAIDA GWAII LOCAL FOODS PROJECT 100-Mile Holiday Dinner Challenge It’s far from easy or convenient to grow, hunt, harvest or even purchase local food, but with every day that passes, the realization of the benefits of eating local is, well, growing! Reduced packaging and shipping costs along with increased taste, nutrition and support of our local food economy have the topic of local food moving quickly up the common sense ladder. Challenge: Let’s all include at least one locally sourced food item to compliment one or more of our holiday meals. For some, this is easy as pumpkin pie. For others, whether it be a budgetary or access issue, it just takes commitment and a bit of thought and planning. It’s so worth it! To help make this challenge simple, here are some local food procurement options available island-wide. Farm Fresh Eggs: How about homemade eggnog, baked goods or holiday brunch? Local eggs can be found at the farmers’ markets, Island Acres Farm in Port and retailers like Bayview Market (Port Clements), Crow’s Nest (Tlell) and Isabel Creek (QC). While supplies last. Island Acres Butcher Shop: (Hwy. 16, north of Port Clements) It’s time to order your turkey for the holidays! These free run birds range from 18-35 pounds and cost $3.75/lb. Don’t care for turkey? Also available are chicken (whole or pieces), beef and pork (ribs, steaks, roasts and ground). Call 250-557-4569 to order or drop by the farm. No Sunday sales please.
Local Retailers: Lavoie’s local carrots can be found island-wide and are especially tasty at this time of year. Drop by the Crow’s Nest in Tlell for some homemade bread (9-grain, white, cinnamonraisin or jalapeno-cheddar) made by Skidgegate’s Leona Ridley. They also carry St. Mary’s Spring Estate’s ginger cookies, salal jelly, sourdough breads (her bread arrives on Fridays and sells out fast) as well as Island Meat & Sausage’s handmade sausages and baked hams - a real treat. Isabel Creek in QC carries fresh, locally made bread and Maude Island’s organic garlic…mmm…garlic mashed potatoes. Alcohol-Free Bubbly: For those who like to attend the festivities but don’t drink alcohol, St. Mary’s Spring Estate’s Kombucha can be purchased at the Crow’s Nest in Tlell, Jags in Skidegate, Junebug’s and the Farmers’ Market in QC, and Green Gaia in Masset…only $20 for a six pack! It’s sweet, fizzy and good for you too. Taking up this challenge? Send us pictures of local food on your holiday dinner tables! (email to info@haidagwaiitrader.com). All the very best of the season to you and yours. Island Acres Turkeys
St. Mary’s Spring Estate’s Kombucha
Zephyr Ridge Farms: (Hwy. 16, north of Port Clements) Fresh blueberry cobbler…mmm. Locally grown, frozen blueberries are available for $7/lb (watch for the “frozen blueberries” sign). A delicious treat worth every penny. For information call 250-5574579. No Sunday sales please. Queen Charlotte Farmers’ Market: Saturdays from 11am to 1pm (right until Saturday, Dec. 23rd!) next to the QC Community Hall. Attended by numerous vendors, you will find affordable (many items between $5 - $15) homemade sourdough crumbs for stuffing, strawberry or salal jelly (great with poultry), winter greens, Maude Island Farm’s amazing organic garlic and so much more! Don’t have time for holiday baking? The wide selection of affordable baked goods is incredible. You just might find a perfect Christmas gift there as well.

Great all-around adventure vehicle! Well-loved but hopefully has lots of life left in it. Highlights: Regular oil changes and maintenance (including brakes, some ball joints, steering idler arm, tension pulley, all done in the last 2 yrs). Hankook Dynapro AT-m all season tires with good tread. Tow package plus front tow hooks. Back seats flip flat. Foamed roof racks. SLT package includes power windows/locks, cruise control, CD player/radio, leather seats. Quirks: Door seal on driver’s door came off a few years ago so some slight leakage in downpours. A/C and back window wiper don’t work. Some minor scuffs on the paint and some wear on the leather seats. $2,700. Email Amber at afaktor86@gmail.com
