seafood, clams, sea urchins and abalone we might take. Swainson’s Thrush Woman teaches us that what we say affects outcomes and therefore we should be careful with our words.”

It’s almost as if, over the years, she received a message from the One-Whose-Voice-is-Obeyed. The “One” is Raven, called Nang Kilslas. The message? “We, the Supernaturals, have been here since the beginning of time and are still here.”

“It’s time for us to remember the power and guidance of these Beings,” says Terri-Lynn. Grizzly Bear Town, the title track of her latest music album, reflects upon her great-grandmother living in Skedans and the residential school experiences of her father. She sings, “Anger is victim, in disguise. It eats at your Soul like cancer. So be the Warriors of light, peace and forgiveness.” She admits, “I struggle with anger as an Indigenous lawyer, experiencing the effects of the legal framework on our people, land and sea. But, we need to find a way forward. We must let go of anger—not to diminish the pain—but to forgive, and focus on the good.”

Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson, Haida lawyer, musician and dancer, worked for four years to bring the Supernatural Beings to life through photographs and song. Her new book, Out of Concealment – Female Supernatural Beings of Haida Gwaii, contains photographs of Terri-Lynn depicting thirty-two Beings through contemporary Indigenous dress, wings and feathers, and face painting, in their natural setting of Haida Gwaii. For example, White Raven, Xuuya Gaada, stands with eyes closed, beside an uncovered cedar bentwood box emitting Light. She has a female body with feathers and wings. Moss Woman, K’inxan Jaad, snuggles deep into a forest’s mossy bed. Her goal is to bring these spirit Beings out of concealment so that they might once again inspire the living as messengers of the divine. According to Terri-Lynn, “These Beings are trying to help us understand our place in the world. They present the worldview that is so opposite to the current consumer worldview of take, take.” Landslide Woman says, “I can’t hold the imbalance anymore, down I come, land to sea.” She encourages us to foster respectful relationships to the environment with checks and balances in place. Low Tide Woman will tell us how much

Another song on Terri-Lynn’s new album, Red: Indigenous Rising, has a message that focuses on encouraging this generation, and children, to continue to draw upon ancient wisdom. “This generation is born singing Haida songs. There are so many potlatches today, and so much is now brought out of concealment,” says Terri-Lynn. “It’s time now for Indigenous Peoples to shine to step into and own the Light”. The root of the word Indigenous means “from the earth,” she explains. “These Beings are for everyone who is “from the earth,” for anyone who caretakes the Earth. With the exhibition, book and album, I want to create excitement that these Beings are real.”

The exhibition, Out of Concealment – Female Supernatural Beings of Haida Gwaii is featured at the Haida Gwaii Museum until December 31, 2017. Photo credit: Swainson’s Thrush Portrait

The COLOUR of our Beaches by Shellene Van der Beke

While researching this article, I had a shift in perspective about beach pollution. Specifically, oil. I bet you all the money in the world not one person on this amazing planet disagrees that oil spills are abominable. Nobody wants oil-covered beaches and marine life. Atrocious media coverage of oil spill devastation has and will continue to fuel powerful movements for change. And yet, this oozing liquid represents only one form of petroleum-based pollution. The other form is a kind of “hard” oil that is multi-colored, sharp and superabundant. Haida Gwaii has some of the most beautiful shorelines in the world and they are teeming with “hard” oil; they are extensively amok with PLASTIC. But, there is more and here’s where the shift occurred for me: the spilled oil seen ON our beaches and marine life is now also IN our beaches and marine life, in the form of microplastics. Inside. Birds, fish, bears…and inevitably, ourselves. Local beach cleanup champion Linda Leitch, along with her partner Dann Braman, has collected over 100 pickup

6

HG

loads of Haida Gwaii beach garbage. Linda reports, “Our shorelines are changing as they accept the onslaught of plastic. This stuff is breaking down into tiny pieces and embedding into the shore, it will be there forever, slowly leaching into the landscape. As an island we were vehemently against the introduction of Enbridge for fear of an oil spill; but the oil spill has already happened. Plastic is a petroleum by-product and it is everywhere. It would be great if it were treated with the same serious attitude; it deserves to be, it’s serious.” As noted in a recent United Nations report, microplastics present a grave threat to human health and marine ecosystems and are listed as the most dangerous environmental problem facing the word today.

Real Solutions: Never Stop As long as humans have been around, some of their trash has inevitably ended up on the world’s beaches but, for the most part, it’s been somewhat out of sight and out of mind. Then, following the 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated the northeastern coast of Japan, awareness of this is-

sue dramatically spiked. The resulting numbers of lost, injured and missing souls makes my hand hold my heart. An equally staggering result is just how much more material was added to the already largest accumulation of ocean garbage in the world. Swirling about just west of us here on Haida Gwaii: the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch.” The good news is, Haida Gwaii has a large web of organizations, companies and individuals stewarding marine debris cleanups. From BC Parks, Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, the Village of Queen Charlotte, the CHN and the Haida Gwaii Marine Debris Committee…to contractors like Danny Robertson of Highlander Marine Services and the Braman/Leitch team…to individuals, families, community groups and schools who gather up bag upon bag of beach trash... to local artists that turn marine debris into something functional or beautiful. We here on Haida Gwaii are truly doing our part. Key to success: we cannot stop. Rachel Schoeler, one of the presenters at last month’s Gwaii Haanas Speaker Series and program manager of “the

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup,” notes, “the longer that the bigger items [of plastic] are out there, the more they’re going to get pounded and beaten up and broken down by waves and storms. That’s when you get those tiny pieces and that’s when it makes it even harder to clean up.” Chatting on the phone with me, Rachel reported that the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup program has been running for 24 years and has removed 1.2 million kilograms of waste from our shores. Canadian organizations are doing their part. Key to their success: they will not stop. Ms. Schoeler adds, “We must start at an individual level and really think about the waste that we are producing. When we think about the four “R’s,” we need to remember that “Recycle” is the last one. People think that ‘Oh, if we recycle, then we’re all good’ when really, the first “R” is for “Refuse,” and then it’s Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. If we work in that order, then there is less plastic out there.” Highlander Marine Services business owner and remote beach cleanup steward Danny Robertson says, “World plastics represent so much of the material that we find on the shore. Cleaning it is one part of the story, but the biggest issue is dealing with how can we change the way that we behave that can prevent the items from entering the ocean. I think we need to change the way that we exist, and that means reducing our

dependency on plastics. They are, hands down, the worst offenders. We live in one of the most remarkably stunningly beautiful places in the world, still so wild, yet, you go to these remote beaches and there is just so much trash. It’s heart-breaking. Seeing it changes you emotionally and spiritually.”

What can we realistically do? We CAN… • wean ourselves of disposable plastics & work towards reusable, plastic-free alternatives • lobby our local government officials: put pressure on manufacturers & make beach cleanup funding a priority • dispose of beach garbage in a proper manner (a whole other topic) • find creative ways to keep it out of the landfill (like Linda Leitch’s cabin insulation made from beach Styrofoam!) • become a beach steward - check out the Canadian Shoreline Cleanup website at ShorelineCleanup.ca where you can register to lead a shoreline cleanup team, set goals and contribute litter data that is useful at a local, national and international level. Looking towards the future, island-wide marine debris stakeholders are actively engaged in building partnerships with other organizations to secure funding for ongoing initiatives. Together, we can make a difference.

A Millennial Story By Shellene Van der Beke

Gardening rewards

R

ecently, on a stunning, bluesky Haida Gwaii day, I had the pleasure of sitting down and having a chat with Graeme and Sophie Macdonald, a lovely young couple who have spent the past six months checking out what Haida Gwaii is all about. They are both a part of the Millennial generation; Graeme, 29, and is from North Delta, BC. His wife, Sophie, 26, originates from Covington, Louisiana (one hour north of New Orleans). Their travels here have been far from just a visit. From learning how to grow a garden to overcoming a lifelong fear, they have enjoyed a rich and dynamic “EdVenture” - a newfangled and

have a life with more than just daily walks.

Ethan and Adventure

“Being raised on the west coast, you always hear about [Haida Gwaii].” It turns out that Graeme’s Grandmother, Doreen Macdonald loves it here and his Uncle, Charlie Anderson, works in forestry so has traveled to this area often over the years.

My first curiosity was why Graeme, Sophie and their Husky/Wolf fur child named Ethan chose to come to Haida Gwaii. They shared with me that in 2016, while living in bustling North Vancouver, they adopted their dog, Ethan. “Every time the noise of the city got too loud, Ethan would howl,” notes Sophie, “waking up the household four or five times per night.” For Ethan, Graeme and Sophie knew they wanted a space where he could better relax, roam freely and

Then, via a Facebook post, they happened to watch Charles Wilkinson’s “On the Edge of the World” documentary about Haida Gwaii. “After watching that documentary,” Graeme remarks, “it kind of changed my vision of

Fearless Sophie with her flock

Haida Gwaii, the culture and the people.” Inspired to learn more, they decided to leave the Big Smoke, along with Graeme’s successful, corporate sales and marketing job, and go on an adventure. Not just any adventure though. Their goal was to learn how to live a more self-sufficient life on a working farm. With the hopes of finding a place to stay that would offer the experience they were looking for, Graeme called around and connected with Elizabeth Condrotte and Bill Frazier of the Tlell Bay Farm. “We want to learn how to grow our own food,” Graeme explained to Elizabeth,

Ethan & Sophie sitting by the sea

“we are more than happy to pull our own weight and are looking to work for the whole growing season.” Welcoming some helping hands, Elizabeth agreed and Graeme and Sophie arrived on April 4th of this year.

Top-Shelf Tutelage Graeme, sitting on a bench swing beside Sophie and across from me, beams, “We’ve really been lucky because of Elizabeth. She’s a former educator, so when we got here she was pretty structured, asking us what we wanted to learn.” Elizabeth gave Graeme and Sophie half an acre to grow a garden. They spent half of their time working

on their garden and the other half helping with chores on the Tlell Bay Farm. In just six short months they have learned how to…

In the garden: • till the land and prepare the rows for planting • sow seeds (all of the vegetables were grown from seed) • set up a greenhouse to grow things like basil and peppers • pot up and sell starter plants

At the local farmers’ markets: • blanch and freeze crops they grew such as broccoli, peas October 2017

and beans pickle beets, beans, cucumbers and more • make gooseberry jam and homemade bread “My Mom is so excited to make jam and bread with me!” Sophie exclaims.

On the farm: • from the animals: rotate and produce high quality compost • milk and care for numerous goats and then make goat’s cheese and yoghurt • Graeme built a new barn for Beauty, Elizabeth’s horse, out of salvaged wood, and put it together with a chainsaw, ace and a drawknife that he borrowed from neighboring farmer Adolf Bitterlich. The foundation was made using large rocks he dragged up from the beach. “We have definitely learned that livestock and gardening go hand in hand,” Graeme says, “one feeds the other. Nothing is wasted.”

In the wild: • pick and process Haida Gwaii mushrooms • Graeme enjoyed his first ever successful hunt with the help of Haida Style Expeditions’

cultural guide, James McGuire • with Elizabeth’s help: hang, gut, skin and butcher their first deer “All the venison was great,” Graeme continues, “we kept all the good cuts and then broke everything else up to kilo size portions and we feed it to Ethan and a bit to the birds…we keep a circular thing going on.”

Say Goodbye to the Chicken Phobia “Sophie’s made a lot of progress. She had a phobia of chickens,” says Graeme. “I don’t know where it came from,” admits Sophie, “but I would go to people’s farms and within five feet of chickens, I would hyperventilate. There was even this cute one with black, fluffy little feathers named “Mama,” just a sweet little chicken and I still couldn’t do it.” Graeme then goes on to explain that Elizabeth decided to kibosh Sophie’s fear and acquired twelve chicks from Brock Storry and Maryanna Yalte’s Rocking Creek Farm. Sophie oversaw the chicks and Graeme made their pen. They had five hens and seven roosters! “The more you play with them,” Sophie states, “the more they get to know you. I would call them and they would follow me

and I trained them to hop up on my lap and shoulder.” The couple are even planning to take two of their favorites, “Wren” and “Raven,” to a friend’s farm in Squamish, who will care for them while they do a bit more traveling before settling down on their own farm somewhere in BC. A testament to Sophie mastering her fear: she killed, cleaned, gutted and butchered all seven roosters. “It puts a whole new perspective on the meat you’re eating. I will probably forever raise my own chickens.”

The Spirit of Haida Gwaii Competing with a blue jay’s squawks repeatedly piercing the sweet summer air, I ask Graeme and Sophie what they will take away from their stay here on Haida Gwaii. Sophie responds, “In the city, people purposely avoid eye contact. You say hi and they’re like - do I know you? People are genuine here.” Graeme adds, “It’s places like this where you find really good connections… people feel more present here. If you need a hand with anything, there are a dozen people you could probably call or just show up at their house and it wouldn’t even be weird. Some people say it’s hard to get into the social scene on Haida Gwaii, it’s actually not so hard, you just gotta show up!”

Wren & Raven Squamish-bound

Graeme tells me of a friend that came to visit him here on Haida Gwaii and that, by the time he left, he could see the clarity in his friend’s eyes, with all the noise pulled away, he was just able to enjoy himself. “Another thing,” Graeme continues, “I’m a very frugal person. I’ve always had a tough time separating myself from money but I came here and I love the fact I soon knew the face and person behind the counter. It makes me happy buying something from a store that employs some of my friends - a special thanks to Adriene O’Brien at the Crow’s Nest for supporting so many local products. The economy here on Haida Gwaii is more circular where everyone helps each other out. Spending here in this community hasn’t felt like such an expense.”

Millennial Messages “The whole experience of being on the farm and learning about Haida culture, Haida Gwaii has changed how we are going to live our life,” Sophie shares. Tears begin to well up in her smiling eyes. “I love everything about this place. Our lifestyle from here on forward will be a lot different. There are things we are not going to sacrifice anymore…like spending time

Ethan and Beauty, best of friends

together, spending time with our dog and hopefully our family one day.” “Everyone who lives here seems to have a much better understanding, respect and interest in Indigenous culture than those living in metropolitan areas,” says Graeme. He gives the bench swing they are sitting on a little nudge, a gesture of comfort supporting Sophie’s expression of heartfelt words. He continues, “People are so generous in sharing stories about the history of this area, we’ve learned tons and gained so much perspective. When you live in the city and rely on mainstream media…it’s just a topic you read about. “I’ve met lots of friends of all ages, political views and opinions all around Haida Gwaii. I think that everyone here is much more on the same page than they think…they just need to talk to each other more. There are a lot of discussions going on, committees, meeting going on, but a lot of people go into them armed to defend their opinion. I think what would be good is a “Negotiation Skills” workshop for everybody that is on a committee, board or has a stake in anything. Everyone should learn to give a little and see things from other people’s perspectives. It would really change

the discussions. There are people that still struggle on Haida Gwaii and I don’t think there needs to be…people just need to work together and take down their defences. Everyone that is having real discussions here are on the same page. If you’re here, you’re pretty cool. If you are living here on these islands, you’re very like-minded because there are not a lot of people that can live this lifestyle.” After my sit down with Graeme and Sophie, I learned something especially valuable – that people who come and go here on Haida Gwaii, including our youthful Millennials, have much to offer. The time visitors spend with us is noteworthy. Their stories and perspectives are rich and expansive. In early November, Graeme and Sophie will be heading back to the mainland to start the next chapter of their lives together. They will be missed by many. By the way, their dog Ethan has gone from howling at city noises to having a blast spending more time with his humans, learning how to protect chickens from predators and even befriending a horse. He is one happy pooch.

Crumble the bread finely into a bowl, add the sage, thyme, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper, and then set aside. Put one half tablespoon of oil in a frying pan, add the sausage and use a fork to crumble, cook for 5 minutes, remove the sausage to a small bowl, and add the remaining oil and the butter. Add the onions and celery on a medium heat and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the sliced apple, cranberries and the sausage to the pan and cook until everything is tender for about another 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool slightly and then add the mixture to the bread crumbs. Toss until the crumbs are moistened slightly as you don’t want them too wet or your stuffing will be mushy. You need it to bind and keep together. You may need to add additional chicken broth, one tablespoon at a time, until it does bind slightly. Set aside to cool completely.

In the meantime, prepare the breast. If it’s prepared properly, the bones or gristle should be removed. Lay the breast out on a cutting board and butterfly it, starting from the thickest part in the center and working out. Once it looks even, lay it out on Saran Wrap and cover with more Saran Wrap and pound away until it is 0.5 inch thick. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Fill with the stuffing mixture, almost at the center, and then roll with the help of the Saran Wrap, rolling away from you. Once you have it rolled, secure using kitchen twine. Using another piece of Saran Wrap, place the breast in the center of the wrap, leaving out the ends, and roll tightly, holding the ends until everything feels snug. Refrigerate until 1.5 hours before serving. Preheat oven to 375°F. Let the breast rest for 15 minutes so it can come to room temperature. Then, rub both sides with butter, salt and pepper. Place in an ovenproof dish, seam side down, cover with foil, and bake 45 minutes. Remove the foil and brown an additional 15 minutes. Remove from your pan and rest the breast 15 further minutes. For the potatoes, mash your potatoes as normal, adding butter, milk, salt and pepper, and then addo ne roasted garlic bulb, squish the garlic from the bulb into the potatoes, and one quarter cup grated Parmesan cheese. Mash until smooth.

WARMING UP TO SOLAR ENERGY ON HAIDA GWAII Haida Gwaii may not be the sunniest place in the world, but recent advances in solar panel technology mean that even here it is possible to generate energy from sunshine. The Swiilawiid Sustainability Society and the Skidegate Band Council have both been leading the way to change Haida Gwaii’s dependence on diesel-generated electricity. The Gwaii Trust was proud to partner with these two organizations on projects involving solar panels to be installed on the roof at the Haida Heritage Centre and at three remote youth camps. Swiilawiid received a Major Contributions grant that allowed it to work with Rediscovery Haida Gwaii, the Swan Bay Rediscovery Camp and the Mount Moresby Adventure Camp on a plan to convert all three camps to solar energy. The goals of this project are to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions for the camps, which have been using gas, diesel and propane generators to

16

HG

produce power; reduce costs; and build local capacity by hiring islanders to help with the solar panel installation. Swiilawiid also received a Community Innovation grant to install solar panels at the youth centres in Old Massett and Skidegate, a project that will be taking place this fall. A relatively new non-profit society, Swiilawiid’s focus is to get Haida Gwaii off diesel energy. Projects like these are important, the society says, because they show it is possible to use clean energy sources like solar here, and also because they engage youth and stimulate their thinking about what kinds of energy we will be using in the future. The Skidegate Band Council is also a leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions on a community-wide basis. One of its latest initiatives is a substantial array of solar panels on the roof of the Haida Heritage Centre – one of the largest such installations in BC. The Gwaii Trust approved a Major Contributions

grant to the roof replacement/solar panel project, which took place earlier this summer. The federal government also contributed funding. Before the solar panels were installed, the Heritage Centre had been spending around $8,000 a month on hydro. With the energy that will be generated by solar power, that cost will be reduced substantially, freeing up money for new economic initiatives. Skidegate sees the project as a first step to energy self-sufficiency, and one that will inspire more use of solar and wind power for future community development and infrastructure. The Gwaii Trust welcomes grant applications for projects like these that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, move us away from relying on diesel-generated hydro power, and provide training and jobs in the new energy sector. Check out our website at gwaiitrust.com for further information, or talk to a director or staff member. The future definitely looks bright for solar energy on Haida Gwaii!

GALA!

By Pete Moore

Everybody brought out their best formal attire on September 30th for the fourth annual Art Auction and Dance Fundraiser for the Haida Gwaii Museum. The night was full of great food, music, and especially fantastic art. Although officially a museum fundraiser, the event also puts a lot back into the local artist community. Not only is the gala a platform for artists to show and sell their art, but they also get 50% of the sale for their piece. Many of the pieces ventured well into the hundreds, with the top piece this year (Jadid by Michael Moody) going for over $600. Over the course of the night, approximately $5000 was raised to go back to the artists. The atmosphere was electric. As bidding wars raged on, cheers roared from throughout the hall, while the numbers went higher and higher. MC’s Nika Collison (HGM curator) and Kathy Pick, and the charismatic auctioneer Dave Wahl made sure there was never a dull moment. Delicious local hors d’oeuvres by Edi Szasz that steadily flowed through the hall kept attendees constantly scanning the crowds for servers. By the end of the night, the high heels had come off and the dancing shoes were on! The event closed out with a dancy set by DJ O from Tlell. For those looking to just boogie, dance-only tickets were made available. Even the danceonly attendees dressed to the nines! With so many different aspects going on all at once, it takes a lot of different passionate individuals to make it possible. “I’m blown away by the volunteerism in this community, that make this event possible,” said organizer Allison Smith. “It’s really more than just a fundraiser,” added Smith, “it’s a chance to bring the community together, celebrate the museum and support local artists.” Proceeds for the museum this year are going towards on-going projects such as the eMusuem, the “Living Room” interactive exhibit, and a new Natural History exhibition. “The Museum is a world class facility, and we hope one day that this event will be a world class fundraiser” said Smith. MISplaced

A Youth-Made Film

by Skyla Holdenshaw and Kaede Miyagi-Leonard

October 27

Premieres at Queen Charlotte Community Centre The MISplaced Movie was written and filmed in 10 days by a group of kids who attended our summer film camp. The proceeds from the Movie Premiere to the Queen Charlotte Youth Centre.

During the summer at the Queen Charlotte Youth Centre we participated in the first ever Film Camp. For ten days we were given free reign and let our imaginations go wild to create our own feature film. “Making the movie this summer with our own equipment and freedom to express ourselves throughout the camp was a great experience and super fun,” said Isaac Bowey, who was one of the youth lucky enough to attend the camp. “The Premiere will promote our movie and as well as fundraise for the QC Youth Centre,” he continued. We thought that the movie trailer was very intriguing

18

HG

because it doesn’t uncover the whole plot of the movie, which is a change from Hollywood. The world-wide Premiere is showing at the Queen Charlotte Community hall on October 27th, 2017 and doors open at 7pm and showtime is 7:30pm. We are very grateful that in support of the youth centre’s movie Premiere, B.C. Ferries has arranged to have a late sailing, to ensure that Sandspit residents have the chance join in the fun, have a date, or stay out late. For more information about you can go visit MisplacedMovie.Com or find us at Facebook/QCYouth. You can also check out all our videos on YouTube/QCYouth.

Enhance Your Life

by Stephany Pryce

Boost your immunity to live longer, stronger and disease-free There is a way to lessen the time for feeling sick, especially when the Fall and Winter season is upon us. It has become the norm to reach for medication during the times when we are feeling unwell. There are many holistic or more natural ways to get better without pharmaceuticals, but they will be more effective if healthier food choices are made. Getting out into the fresh air helps detox the system and exercise reduces colds and flus by as much as 45 percent if done 5 or more days a week. We are exposed to environmental toxins, drugs, colds, flus, processed carbohydrates, and many tempting unhealthy non-foods. The immune system can aid in sickness recovery times, if given a boost by adding certain natural foods into the diet. Helpful to prevent illness: Zinc, Elderberry, Vitamin D, and a reduction in sugar and carbohydrate intake. The addition of more vegetables, grains, beans, nuts, seeds and natural sweets such as fruits. Try to shop more in the fresh produce section rather than the processed food section of the store. Haida Gwaii does have great resources for proteins including seafood and venison. This cultural way of eating protein aligns with the Haida’s natural body rhythms but is not limited to First Nations. Reduce consumption of commercial animal products that are full of antibiotics and harmful toxins. Drinking water is difficult to get into the habit of doing, but is excellent for optimum health. In the AM try drinking warm water as it is easier on the system. If drinking with a meal is a must, consider hot water with a slice of lemon. It is refreshing and also aids in digestion.

Here are some simple rules to follow for a powerful immune system Adjust the daily diet to include these foods: • A substantial salad • Servings of legumes, beans or grains • Three fresh fruits, focusing on all kinds of berries, pomegranates in season (can be frozen for out of season), cherries, plums and oranges • One ounce of raw nuts or seeds • One large serving of steamed or raw green vegetables If you experience food intolerances, make substitutions accordingly.

Avoid these Non-Foods: • BBQ or processed meat, red meat (it is very difficult to digest, and over time can cause disease) • Fried foods; try oven baked food instead of frying • Fatty dairy products such as cheese, ice cream, whole milk, butter or margarine (butter is better) • Soft drinks, soda and artificial sweeteners, sugar, syrups, jams with sugar, and desserts • White products such as flour, rice, and bread (there are miles of white carb products on the shelves that put many pounds on your body and raise your blood sugar to dangerous levels) • Processed foods lack nutritional value It does take the body a little adjustment period to get used to this way of eating, and once you begin to feel better, this might be the push to keep making healthier food choices. Please note that a little unease will happen with the release of toxins, this is normal, and it will pass. The added bonus with these changes is weight loss, and increased energy levels, and a better quality of life. Mentally and physically.

A CONCRETE

CURIOSITY by Benjamin Van der Beke

As you head down the Rainbow Wharf, in Port Clements, and look directly to your left, you will notice a foundation on the beach. Was it remnants of an old wharf or industry from the past? Every time I head down the wharf to enjoy the view from the end, I’ve been curious as to what it was. With permission from the nearby resident, I took my drone for a flight and then visited our local museum. It turns out, the foundation on the beach used to support the boiler for the Lynch Mill which was built

22

HG

in 1917. At this time, Port Clements, by conservative numbers, had a population of 1000 people, in addition to around 800 loggers coming and going from 14 surrounding camps in the inlet. Mr. W.P. Lynch was a New Brunswicker that ran a store 50 miles out of Dawson and then became one of the first councillors of Prince Rupert before coming to Port Clements to build the mill. He left in the 1920’s when the spruce market fell out and moved to San Francisco, where he died shortly thereafter. There is

still some lumber sawed from that mill at the Port Clements Museum in the form of a table… worth checking out.

I’d like to thank the ladies at the PC Museum and Kathleen Dalzell’s book “Queen Charlotte Islands v.1” for clearing up that curiosity.
