Proactive Ponderings about Common Challenges by Shellene Van der Beke
Challenge: Is Cooperation Truly a Solution for a New Economy? There is no denying that working together is not the easy route, but is it worth it? Is it an economical answer? Many say yes. For example, this past month, at the Haida Heritage Centre, Northern Savings Credit Union hosted a screening of the Canadian Community Economic Development’s film “A New Economy”, directed by Trevor Meier and produced by Melanie Wood. It was an interesting, feel-good documentary that showcased several Canadian businesses who value cooperation, collaboration and the building of relationships equally as much as the bottom line. Proactive Solutions: Introducing - Regenerative Capitalism
John Fullerton, founder and president of Capital Institute and a keynote speaker in the film, concludes that, “Regenerative companies will feel healthy.” This statement efficiently encapsulates what this documentary is all about; business models based on similar values, work enjoyment and human interactions that can be had with cooperation rather than a rigid hierarchy of control.
Because extinction sucks, here are a few of John Fullerton’s regenerative capitalism intentions worthy of consideration: • encourage further discussion on a complex and even revolutionary view of finance • spend more effort on connecting the dots between problems that might not initially seem all that related • there is no such thing as environmental issues; we are [all] part of the environment. • as said by poet Wendell Berry, “There are no unsacred places; only sacred places and desecrated places” • instead of the relentless pursuit at all costs of GDP growth and shareholder value, align our economy with principles like holistic wealth, adaptive management, empowered participation, and honoring community and place To read more, check out the Capital Institute’s “Field Guide to Investing in a Regenerative Economy.”

Biz Tip!!
Always give your customer more than you promised and more than they expected!
As a small business owner, it is difficult to compete on price. While the idea of ousting your competition with a cheaper price is a nice one, it’s not sustainable. Small businesses don’t have the advantage of scale and reach that the big-boxes like the Amazon’s and Wal-Mart’s do. Instead, your best advantage as a local operator is offering an unforgettable experience and unbeatable service! While price will factor into a consumer’s decision, exceptional experiences and customer service far outweigh a pricey tag.

Your Body Knows
I
t happened to my friend four weeks ago, and it happened to me four years ago. First, my friend - her dog barrelled into her, knocking her to the ground. She shattered her right elbow. Two surgeries later and enforced time off work, she admits, “This is a wake-up call. I know I have to reassess my priorities. My job is making me sick.” She works in healthcare management where repeated budget cuts means to do more with less and to lay off staff. Four years ago, I was struggling in a demanding job that had lost meaning for me. In the midst of the “project deliverables” time, I developed three weeks’ worth of painful shingles. I was forced to stop, take time out, and yes, reassess. While we intuitively know something has to give, our mind rationalizes and makes deals like, “I’ll stay for only three more years and then my pension starts!” But our bodies know. And they will give us that unmistakeable sign that the time is now! A broken bone, cancer, fibromyalgia, a stomach ulcer, or a car accident to name a few. These uninvited guests can shine a bright light on some beliefs we are holding that keep us in unhealthy work, relationships or even volunteer commitments. Some of these beliefs may include: I have to be strong. I can handle anything. I’m responsible for the whole world. It’s not right to be angry. I can’t have any needs. If I don’t do it, nobody will.
Where do these beliefs come from? According to Dr. Gabor Maté, author of “When the Body Says No - The Cost of Hidden Stress,” these beliefs are unconscious, and were formed during early childhood when we had to mold ourselves to fit our parents’ spoken and unspoken expectations. We thought we had to become someone other than who we were to earn their love and care. We became too nice, too good or too capable. This way of being may have kept us safe in an unstable family environment. But what happens as we age, when we continue to hide our deepest needs, longings, and feelings? “When emotions are repressed, this disarms the body’s defences against illness,” said Maté. “These unconscious beliefs are embedded at the cellular level and cause a chronic stress reaction in our body.” His research into the mind-body connection uncovered this pattern, “In important areas of their lives, almost none of my patients with serious disease had ever learned to say no.” The good news is – it’s never too late to say yes to a healthy life. “The key to healing is a c t i v e , free and informed choice,” said Maté. “The more we can learn about ourselves, the less prone we are to become passive victims.” We can ask ourselves why we do what we do. Is it to please others, keep the peace or to truly meet our own needs? With self-awareness and a commitment to living one’s authentic life, we can change our beliefs to bring in more love, respect, healthy boundaries, and a healthy body.

Once upon a time…
...there was a bird found where it should not have been - Haida Gwaii. Two years ago, unsuspecting naturalists played random birdcalls and got a surprise response back from the Virginia rail. The Virginia rail is a mysterious marsh bird, often hidden within dense tall reeds, grasses and sedge. Its cricket-like kiddick-kiddick, k-k-k-kerr, or squeaky pig-like grunt calls are heard more often than it is seen. For those fortunate enough to see it, the Virginia rail would appear to be chicken-like with a small brown body, grey cheeks, short tail, strong legs, and a long bill. Like many other water birds, the Virginia rail nests on the ground, breeds in late spring, and usually migrates south for the winter.
The Big Question
According to numerous published maps, the Virginia rail inhabits freshwater and salt marshes of southern Canada, with Nanaimo marking its northernmost range along the west coast of British Columbia. However, since before the 1990s, the Virginia rail has been documented as ‘accidentally’ occurring 700 km outside of its range on Haida Gwaii. Can their presence be more than just accidental? Is there in fact a resident population? If so, are they a distinct sub-species from the mainland population, as is true for the Haida Gwaii Saw-whet Owl, Hairy Woodpecker and Steller’s Jay? As Haida Gwaii is a relatively isolated archipelago with a unique natural history, researchers would like to know whether the types of plants and habitats that Virginia rails are using differ from the mainland population, and how habitat use might change throughout the year. So far, Virginia rails have been found at various times of the year in Tlell, Delkatla Wildlife Sanctuary in Masset, Tow Hill, Sandspit, and near Stanley Lake, north of Queen Charlotte.
How can we help?
Residents of Haida Gwaii - and visitors - can help in this investigation by reporting any encounters with a Virginia rail. Whether you are just out enjoying nature or specifically looking for the Virginia rail, we encourage non-invasive observation, such as listening quietly or taking photographs from the edge of a marsh, as opposed to walking through sensitive nesting habitat. If anyone believes they saw or heard a Virginia rail, they can report these encounters at the Haida Gwaii Wildlife Citizen Science Centre webpage (https://laramief.wixsite.com/haidagwaiiwildlife/virginia -rail-project). Collaboration between the public and researchers may be the best way to unveil the mystery of the Haida Gwaii Virginia rail. For more information about the Virginia rail, including identification by sight and sound, habitat and behaviour, check out the Audubon Field Guide (http://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/virginia-rail). If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at haidagwaiiwildlife@gmail.com.

RENNELL SOUND A World-Class Wilderness Experience By Shellene Van der Beke
Photography by Lil Whitey’s Aerials
September 2017

PAST Chaalh uu Kaahlii, also known as Rennell Sound, is rich with history and a place where countless generations of Haida lived and braved heavy seas and powerful westerly gales. Between 1960 and the mid 1980’s, a logging camp located at Clapp Basin - the extreme head of Rennell Sound - was in operation between the months of March and October. Equipped with ample camp housing, there was also a mess hall, commissary, postal services and even a school. “Those were the good days,” exclaims longtime resident and Queen Charlotte business proprietor, Rocky Pelletier. Rocky and his wife Claudette and their three children, Jennifer, Nancy and Jocelyn, lived there between 1979 and 1983. “We had a trailer we lived in and enjoyed many meals at the dining room. It was good food!”
PRESENT With an entrance over 16km wide and an inlet nearly 20km long, the Sound is the largest on the west coast of Graham Island, Haida Gwaii. It is also part of the 143,596 hectare Duu Guusd Heritage Site/Conservancy that is co-managed by the Haida Nation and the Province of BC. As described by Haida singer, carver, traditional medicine practitioner, political activist and leader, Guujaaw, “Changed only by relentless seas and pounding rain since ancient times, Duu Guusd stands as a testament to the power of the earth…and maintains all of the elements that spawned the Haida cultural heritage.”

Today, the remote area can be accessed by travelling the logging roads (sometimes
active with trucks – contact the forestry office to find out about active logging), either 22km from Queen Charlotte or 48km from Port Clements, down the QC Mainline. Then begins the 11km drive through the Rennell Pass including the Rennell Hill with its very steep, Land slide-exposed 25% grade down into waterfall extrao rdinaire the Sound. Once at the bottom, residents and visitors alike can enjoy: Three recreation sites; • Rennell Sound Rec Site– sport fishing, camping spots, outhouses (no potable water) • Cone Head – two cozy campsites, an amazing view of Cone Head Mountain, outhouse (no potable water) • Clapp Basin (boat access only) – a favorite for wilderness camping and fishing Four trails, each leading to a pristine and spirit-nurturing seashore; • 5-Mile – a brief walk leading to a cobble beach • Riley Creek – a 3km trail that features a bounty of stunning west coast riparian habitat • Gregory Beach – a hop, skip and a jump shoreline forest meander to Gregory Beach • Bonanza Beach – a short and easy to walk trail leading to Bonanza Beach, a treasure to behold, and • one boat launch at the Rennell Sound Recreation Site. Whether travelling to Rennell Sound for a scenic day trip, weekend or sport fishing/camping excursion, visitors can enjoy the full gamut of what the wild and wonderful west coast of Haida Gwaii offers. Activities such as beachcombing, picnicking, hiking, swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling, surfing, kayaking or canoeing and nature study abound.
FUTURE Recognized for its natural, ecological and cultural values, protecting the Rennell Sound area is a significant priority. Management Plan goals include (to name a few): • protecting and maintaining Haida cultural values and social and ceremonial uses • maintaining natural biodiversity and protecting the habitat for internationally significant populations of nesting seabirds • ensuring any recreational opportunities occur in such a way that cultural and natural values are maintained Duu Guusd Conservancy specific information can be found at haidanation.ca under ‘Programs’. Haida Gwaii Natural Resources District’s Engineering & Recreation Officer, Larry Duke, reports that, “Projects like installing a rubble-mound breakwater for the Rennell Sound Recreation site boat launch and building more camping and parking spots at the Rennell Sound Rec site are in the works, funding dependent.”
SAFETY AND MORE INFO Besides watching for logging trucks and having the right vehicle to get to Rennell Sound, seasonal landslides have been known to block the access road for days. “We encourage folks to go on our website,” Duke advises, “and look at how much rain has fallen, look at what the forecast is and make good decisions on whether it is the best time to travel to Rennell Sound.” Developed for worker safety, but available to everyone, check out the Rennell Pass Weather Station at www.for.gov.bc.ca/dqc/weather.htm For residents and tourists alike, and very much worth picking up, there are brochures available at the Masset and Queen Charlotte Visitor Centres that include information on Rennell Sound and other areas of back road interest. The Backroad Mapbooks for Haida Gwaii can also be purchased at many different retailers around Haida Gwaii. Valuable online resources worth checking out include Recreation Sites and Trails BC at www. sitesandtrailsbc.ca and BC Parks at www.env.gov.bc.ca/ bcparks Photography by Lil Whitey’s Aerials
RENNELL SOUND SAFETY TIPS • Drive defensively – anticipate something big coming around the corner • Drive the right vehicle – high clearance, good tires and good brakes • Boating safety – experience and preparedness is a must for such a remote area; weather can change drastically and communications are limited to satellite phones and/or a marine radio • Landslide risk – especially September through May, know when to leave or be prepared with extra provisions to stay a few extra days

With the warm weather coming on later than normal this year on Haida Gwaii, the month of September is turning out to be an especially good time to visit the farmers’ markets! On Fridays in Masset, Saturdays in Queen Charlotte and Sundays in Tlell you will find a bounty of local produce, baked goods, handcrafts and much more. This past May, I had the privilege of exploring part of Eastern Europe. When I travel, one of the things I love to do is go to the local food markets and grocery stores to see what’s different and what’s the same as back home. It’s fun to try out exotic looking products, taste test the ones I know and see if they taste the same overseas (In some countries, Pepsi tastes like Coke and Coke tastes like Pepsi!) So, from the Czech Republic through Hungary to Romania, I savoured the landscapes, the sounds of the different languages, the smells, and the local food. Their markets were full of fresh strawberries, locally made sheep cheese, packs of aromatic dill, colourful radishes, intensely bright beets … I tasted a bunch of different goulashes, meat and gravy dishes. My favourites were Langosi cu branza si marar – fried bread with cheese and dill filling, Sarmales - cabbage rolls made with fermented cabbage, and Zacuscǎ - Romanian roasted eggplant & red pepper spread. This fall, I will be offering some cooking classes featuring some of these lovely, European dishes. Stay tuned to the Haida Gwaii Rec website. A great way to spend an evening experimenting with food while sharing knowledge and building community! September 2017

Made on Haida Gwaii Old Massett Village Council Woodworking Program By Shellene Van der Beke
The Merriam-Webster’s definition of “value-added” is: “of, relating to, or being a product whose value has been increased especially by special manufacturing, marketing, or processing.” Today, there are many streams of thought that say that value-added industry is a key contributor for strong and sustainable, local economies. The Old Massett Village Council (OMVC) Woodworking Program, now five years running, is a superb example of such an enterprise and this is good because the fact is, there is a healthy market for products made on Haida Gwaii. On one of the back streets of Gaaw in Xaad kil (the Village of Old Massett), tucked away rather inconspicuously in an unadorned Quonset hut is the home of the OMVC Woodworking Program. It was a beautiful, summery day, and after a lovely drive up from Port Clements, my Husband, Ben and I enjoyed an interesting chat with Program Manager and Instructor, Ian MacLean. MacLean, who, after spending 3 years in England apprenticing in a cabinet shop, graduated in 2000 from the Carpentry and Joinery Heritage Program at Algonquin College in Ontario. The first thing we noticed when inside the building was, wow, what a shop! As a woodcarver, Ben’s eyes were wide with delight to see all of the stateof-the-art equipment the OMVC has invested in. MacLean showed us their 36-inch dual drum sander, 3 dust collectors (clean air is a top priority), a Computer Numerical Control Carving Machine and a light industrial “Saw Stop” table saw. With safety being a key focus, this style of table saw is designed so that if the blade touches a finger, it will automatically 16

stop. There is also a 20-inch planer, 8-inch jointer, and a Veneer Press, to name a few. I soon noticed how cozy and warm it felt inside. MacLean pointed out the insulative foam that covered the entire interior surface of the Quonset hut, making the shop super energy efficient. At the time of our interview, a small household space heater was the one and only heat source! Back in 2011, the OMVC Woodworking Program, with a 15-person team, designed and installed the tables, benches, bunks and kitchenettes at the Hiellen Longhouse Village in Tow Hill. Other examples of their fine craftsmanship can be seen at the Masset Airport and the entrance door to the Gin Kuyaas-Haida Art Studio in Old Massett. Currently, the program staff includes just two people, MacLean and his Joinery (Cabinetmaker) Apprentice, Daisy White. “A part of what we hope to be doing,” states MacLean, “will be to support some of the other woodworkers on island…we are not here to take work away from anyone; we want to give people a broader audience.
We are trying to provide quality products for people on island, made from wood on island, made by people on island. Show people what we can do with what we have.”
The wood utilized in the shop is sourced entirely from local wood producers and some is even from the beach. Although they do work with lots of yew, red and yellow cedar, hemlock and even beachcombed oak, the primary wood they enjoy working with is alder. Alder is sustainable; readily available, grows fast and produces stunning woodworking pieces. Some of the products they produce are cutting boards, doors, cabinets, shelving and furniture. “The people controlling the wood here on Haida Gwaii are not placing enough importance on getting jobs here. There are a few secondary wood production businesses and they are making quite an effort to make it happen. But, they are not getting the support from the industry or the province, and that’s a shame,” affirms MacLean. “Look at the barges as they go out of the inlet full of logs. Imagine those barges full of…even just dimensional lumber, how many jobs would that be?” MacLean continues, “Instead of us sending all of this beautiful wood [south] for them to run through some spaghetti mill or a pond and send overseas to Asia…imagine how many jobs that would be.”
Daisy White (left) and Ian MacLean (right) with one of their custom designed doors.
The OMVC Woodworking Program is a full service, custom woodworking shop from design all of the way through to installation. It features youth programs and men’s groups, and they are hoping to soon open their doors, once per week, to the public. MacLean proclaims, “We want people to be able to work with wood in a shop setting, access tools in a healthy and safe environment and it will be great for folks to see the process from design to the finished product and understand what’s involved.” A new website launch is planned for the end of September and they will also be looking to hire on two or three entry level people in October. For more information contact Ian MacLean at the Old Massett Village Council office at 250-626-3337.

OUR COMMUNITY INNOVATION GRANTS ARE SMALL, BUT MIGHTY
When the World Indigenous Basketball Challenge took to the gym at UBC last month, bringing together more than a dozen teams from around the world, it marked the culmination of months of planning by local volunteers. This year’s tournament built on the success of last year’s event. The organizers secured a new, larger venue, made new partnerships, and attracted even more teams. Although it mostly took place in Vancouver, the challenge was completely organized on Haida Gwaii with the help of volunteers from every community, and some of the teams travelled here for a series of exhibition games. Earlier this year, the Skidegate Saints successfully applied for a $5,000 Community Innovation grant to help cover some of tournament’s expenses. A worldclass event like this one allows local
volunteers to build new skills in areas like marketing and promotions, and displays Haida hospitality, culture, and sportsmanship to a wide audience, making it a natural fit with Gwaii Trust goals. Our Community Innovation grants are designed to support smaller-scale community projects that improve basic facilities and/or services. We also want to encourage projects that create jobs, especially for youth or people who face employment barriers, and provide
education or experience in trades work. These grants are open to local governments and non-profit organizations. We will award up to $10,000 in matching funds – applicants must provide at least 50% of the total project cost through fundraising, cash reserves or in-kind services. We accept applications for this grant throughout the year, and our budget for 2017 is $130,000. Last year, we funded 17 different projects through this program – ranging from an infrastructure upgrade at the Mount Moresby Adventure Camp, to replacing the entrance ramps at the Port Clements Museum, to helping the Swiilawiid Sustainability Society with a project to install solar panels at off-grid youth camps. See our website at gwaiitrust.com for complete details and online application forms.

Horoscopes for September, 2017 Aries (March 20 - April 19) This is the month, dearest Aries, to put your head down and charge into the work before you. It’s important to realize that when you do this and check off the items on your expanding list, the things that have been weighing on you will begin to melt away. It will free you up for new and amazing activities for the future. Key Words: Maneuver, Focus, Bull’s-Eye Taurus (April 19 - May 20) You have things to accomplish this month, dearest Taurus, and one of them is to do it with joy and purpose. It doesn’t really matter what you do with your time as long as you have a level of contentment and creativity attached to it. Pay the bills while listening to your favorite music in the background, clean the house while dancing in the kitchen. Enjoy! Key Words: Desire, Actualize, Discover Gemini (May 20 - June 21) For you, dearest Gemini, this month brings a level of creativity you haven’t seen for awhile. This is the month to meet new people that have lessons to teach you in a variety of subjects. As an example, you may be invited to a dinner party and you feel too tired to go. My advice is go anyway; you may meet someone there that helps you with a work project or is about to become your best friend. Take advantage of all opportunities this month! Key Words: Forge, Generate, Imagine
Scorpio (October 23 - November 22) You are experiencing the peak of what you planted months ago, dearest Scorpio. What are you now reaping? The answer to this is key to how you could move forward. If what’s happening now feels meaningful and beneficial to yourself and others, then continue on. If it doesn’t, then this is your time to replant the seeds of diverse opportunities. You get to decide what’s working for you and what is not. You just need to make that decision and the rest will come. Key Words: Target, Intent, Mission Sagittarius (November 22 - December 22) When in doubt, dearest Sagittarius, you can always fall back on your love of adventure. Sometimes just doing something unique and mind blowing will thrust you into another hemisphere where you identify a different set of opportunities that you didn’t see before. Setting goals for yourself that challenge you is the way to move forward in a positive style. Key Words: Voyage, Navigate, Aim Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) Devise a plan for yourself, dearest Capricorn, where you can fall deeply in love with who you are and what you stand for. Your morals are high but sometimes you get too caught up in the details to appreciate all that you are. Ponder what lies ahead for you if you continue in this manner. Then think about it some more and analyze what steps you could take to have continual enjoyment in life. Key Words: Speculate, Brainstorm, Consider
Cancer (June 21 - July 22) You may be feeling a bit like a hermit crab this month, dearest Cancer. It is your natural tendency to hide yourself away in your home life and this month there is nothing wrong with doing this. Just remember that life is going on in the outside world and when you come back to it, there will be more things pressing at you; so you might want to come up for air sooner so it doesn’t feel so overwhelming. Key Words: Rest, Dream, Hope
Aquarius (January 20 - February 19) Part of this month finds you, dearest Aquarius, in the company of others; you needing them and them needing you. Your tendency is to express your freedom and individuality at every opportunity you get but this month it is important to include other people in your mix. There is something that they want to provide you that you need. So let them into your space to do so. Key Words: Friendship, Assistance, Sharing
Leo (July 22 - August 23) You have had a lot on your plate lately, dearest Leo. The world seems to be going a million miles an hour and you are just trying to hold on. No worries. You are learning to juggle many balls in the air at once and occasionally you will drop one. It’s okay, just bend over and pick it up and start again. There’s no harm in being human and making the random mistake. You’re learning lots along the way. Key Words: Modify, Adapt, Re-shape
Pisces (February 19 - March 20) You may be feeling torn this month, dearest Pisces, between wanting your own space and needing the companionship of others. It’s fine to need both things just remember that your family and friends do not want to feel like they are second best in your eyes. Commit to social engagements when your energy is high and say no to them when you need to regenerate yourself. Just do that with a dollop of compassion. Key Words: Devotion, Engaging, Grace
Virgo (August 23 - September 22) This month, dearest Virgo, ask yourself these key questions; what is it that I want in my life? And what is my plan for achieving it? Because you are now standing in a time of life that requires you to make what you want and take what you want. I don’t mean this in a negative way; I mean that it’s time for you to have a win. It’s time for you to appear a little bit selfish and stick up for yourself like no one else will. Key Words: Passion, Dedication, Commitment Libra (September 22 - October 23) You may feel like taking yourself to the background to re-group for a bit, dearest Libra. It’s fine to give yourself some space to regenerate your enthusiasm and take stock in your life. In fact it’s vital to do this right now. Clear the air with yourself and do some form of meditation in order to determine your next move; be that hiking in the forest, weeding the garden or sitting quietly and breathing. Key Words: Ponder, Contemplate, Reflect

RAVENS By Melissa Tierney
I
am reading on my porch when the quiet is broken by the heavy flap of a raven’s wings. He settles in the tall tree above the chicken coop. The nine hens and a single rooster are silent as per usual in the morning. They amble around, lazily pecking the ground. But then, the raven starts in. His caw pierces the air, startling the chickens and blasts the backyard peace like a foghorn, repeating until you can almost see the jagged soundwaves in the air. The chickens burst into a clucking chorus and thrash their clumsy wings; a stark contrast to the metronome-consistent beat of the raven’s acutely pitched squawk. Suddenly, the raven is silent. The chickens continue to sound the alarm, unfooled by their frustrating neighbour’s momentary reprieve. Each cluck boils in their bellies then erupts out of their throats, sending them backwards with the explosive auditory force. Moments pass. The hens are quiet; alert; expectant. Then, a new call comes from the tree: a perfectly mirrored cluck! The chickens are silent. The clucking from above is much louder than their own, so accurately rendered but somehow off...it is more controlled, more mechanical than their own, organic sound. I sense the chickens are thinking, “This will not do.” They burst back into speech, fireworks of sound from across the coop echoing through the backyard. With each of the chicken’s pauses, the impostor clucks his impersonation from the tree. I head to the enclosure, unable to concentrate on my book through all of the ruckus. “What are you on about, raven?” I call to the hidden miscreant, buried in leaves. He responds with another cluck and the chickens ripple their discontent across the pen. “What a commotion for a Monday morning,” I mutter, walking back to the porch.

HG
It continues for a few minutes more, then, abruptly complete silence. I glance back at the coop and see a flutter of wings on the fence. Is he in the coop? Surely the chickens would be losing it. I wait. Not a sound. I guess I’ll enjoy the newfound peace. I pick up my book. Then, a tree across the yard comes alive with yet another raven’s alien clicks which soon shift to the sound of a tap dripping! It sounds like a single water droplet, over and over again, round and full and wet. Then, the mimic of a running machine. He runs through what appears to be all of the sounds he knows. The whistling, discordant clicking he then lands on unsettles me; it makes me feel like the little girl from the movie “Signs”, though she was more self assured. Just as I start to feel like I’m losing my grip on reality, the second raven drops out of the tree and thunders above my head, audibly slicing the air with his wings. I wonder, “Is he coming for me? “and I watch him closely, but he simply falls from the air to join the original disrupter above the chickens. I expect another battle. But all is quiet. What caused this absurd backyard vaudeville? Did you want to steal eggs? If so, why not be silent? Are you just harbingers of chaos disturbing the peace simply to stir things up? Traditional native stories often depict ravens as tricksters, shifting otherwise settled worlds by asking pesky questions, provoking all of those around them, stealing the sun. I look for the provocateurs, cloaked in branches, furtively plotting their next upheaval. They must be the ones from the stories. Follow Melissa’s adventures on her blog: heartandspirit.blog
HAIDA GWAII LOCAL FOODS PROJECT Working Towards Food Security on Haida Gwaii Did you know that the Old Massett Adult Day Program (ADP) building hosts numerous programs? Check these out: • Breakfast Program: Monday-Friday, served from 8-9am • Old Massett Food Bank: offers food bank bags for people in need on alternating Mondays from 1-4pm (unless it’s on a statutory holiday and then it gets moved one day forward) • Adult Day Program: Monday-Friday from 9a-3pm. This program assists seniors and adults with disabilities to continue to live on their own by providing supportive group programs and health services. These programs are made possible by the Old Massett Village Council and the Haida Health Centre with funding contributions by Gwaii Trust, Farm 2 School and the Northern Health Authority as well as local, private donations from both businesses and families. Over the past five years, the ADP has worked in collaboration with Farm 2 School to host a Food Pantry that promotes local foods being provided to schools, Northern
Haida Gwaii Hospital’s monthly local meal night and, more recently, has developed a large greenhouse on the property to further support this initiative. The ADP’s vision is to be able to grow fresh produce for all ADP meals. The growing and harvesting can incorporate meaningful activities for the elders and other program users as well as intergenerational events when local schools visit the ADP to spend time with elders. We are approaching the completion of our first harvesting year that yielded potatoes, tomatoes of all kinds, broccoli, hot peppers (an acquired taste), herbs, onions, garlic, peas and cucumbers to mention but a few, as well as decorative flowers for the program. It takes the collaboration of many agencies and services to make this happen, but mostly it takes a shared vision for healthy eating and healthy lives for everyone to make it possible. The Old Massett Adult Day Program is located at 510 Naanii Street and can be reached at 250-626-5671 or 250-6267517 or email Christopher.Horner@haidahealth.ca T
